20.

 21.
In Britain, we need to reframe the debate about assisted dying. People should have a choice about how they die
I've studied ethics as a branch of philosophy – it's fun. The theory, that is. But it is also vacuous. Worthwhile ethics can only be done with real people in front of you. You only know you've got it right when you would be happy to apply your theory to those you love.

Notionally, I was convinced that a loving and compassionate God would not demand of a person extreme and prolonged suffering in order to authenticate his ultimate control. God invites us to collaborate in the adventure of living, and we are free to make life-or-death choices in many ways. Some choose to smoke or drink. Even to drive or cross the road presupposes a degree of autonomy over our mortality. It has always seemed to me perverse to deny that autonomy at the very point when we need it most.

 44.

 45.
Rosie Harper and Adrian Furse debate one of the biggest questions facing the church, as the synod starts its discussions
Out in the normal world, Christians around the country have voted loud and clear for female bishops. Full stop. But in the Hogwarts world of synod it feels more precarious. The archbishops are likely to put forward yet another carefully crafted work designed to fudge the issue. That's despite their last attempt being thrown out. On Wednesday the debate will focus on a motion from Manchester, which despite being probably well-intentioned, would if adopted lead to legalised institutional discrimination. What a ghastly result that would be.

 67.

 68.
The unspeakable tedium of General Synod was enlivened by Rowan Williams's rallying call for a new language of faith
Every year General Synod goes north on holiday. It takes itself mighty seriously, wallows in process and the fine detail of procedure. In an airless and windowless hall, it slowly administers neat chloroform of tedium.

There are moments, no, hours when I wonder why on earth I gave away five of the best days of the summer to sit here in York. No debates produced an outcome that will make any difference beyond the synod itself. Even the glorious absurdity of it all, spiced by gentle whimsical humour, failed to keep me awake.

 91.
The tribal factions of the General Synod aren't hard to spot – but they're supposed to work out God's agenda, not their own
My 19-year-old son works in the pharmacy in Boots. The best fun to be had there is working out what a customer is going to ask for as they approach the counter. A spotty youth who is bright red is easiest, though there must be less embarrassing ways of procuring condoms these days. But I was amazed to learn that his strike rate for all customers is over 80%! We give away so much before we open our mouths. This is as true in the General Synod as at the counter at Boots

If you're a woman with a dog collar on, walking into Church House while synod is sitting still requires a deep breath. You know you will encounter several people who have pretty much made it their life's work to deny your existence. They are not hard to spot. Lack of eye contact is a give away, as is a determination not to sit next to you in the coffee bar even though the seat by your side is the only one free in the room.

 103.
A superficial marriage pep talk sells people short. As Christians we must express our beliefs and engage with our spiritual side
I am haunted by a simple comment. A set of church financials was looking a tad scary and I called on a great pal of mine. He applied his international turnaround expertise and came up with the goods. He is outstanding and I guess that if we followed his advice we might well wriggle out of our dilemma. We'll see.
