50.

The Rockies, oh so desperately needed someone to make a big splash.

 51.
Two players delivered Friday night — one of them literally — in the Rockies’ 3-2 win over the Pirates at PNC Park.

 52.
Ryan McMahon led off the Rockies’ three-run sixth inning with a 445-foot homer that splashed down in the Allegheny River. That inning gave right-hander Cal Qauntrill all the support he needed to notch his first victory in a Rockies uniform.

 53.
The Rockies (8-24) snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 3-14 on the road. But the win didn’t come without white knuckles. Pittsburgh’s Oneil Cruz crushed a two-run homer off lefty reliever Jalen Beeks in the ninth, but Beeks struck out Connor Joe and Jared Triolo to preserve the win.

 54.
Quantrill pitched 7 2/3 innings, giving up just three hits, all singles. His split-finger change-up confounded the Pirates, and he struck out nine and walked none. Seven of his strikeouts came via his split-finger. He also got seven groundball outs; of his 99 pitches, 66 were thrown for strikes.

 55.
He looked like he might have a chance for his first complete game, but when he plunked Joey Bart with two outs in the eighth, manager Bud Black replaced him with reliever Jake Bird.

 56.
McMahon’s enormous homer jump-started Colorado’s stalled offense. He punished veteran left-hander Martin Perez’s 1-1 changeup for his team-leading fifth home run. McMahon joined Hall of Famer Todd Helton as the only Rockies player to reach the Allegheny River.

 58.
Helton did it on May 4, 2001, the first year PNC opened. Helton was the second player to accomplish the feat. Houston’s Lance Berkman was the first. McMahon became the 49th player to hit a homer into the Allegheny River. It’s been done 71 times.

 59.
Designated hitter Elias Diaz followed up McMahon’s homer with a double. Elehuris Montero drove in Diaz with a single to left and took second on a throw to the plate. Brendan Rodgers battled reliever Hunter Stratton through a 12-pitch at-bat to core Montero with an RBI single to right.

 111.
Gomber has pitched relatively well but has nothing to show for his efforts. He’s coming off a season-high seven-inning game against the Astros in Mexico City. He allowed four runs on six hits, but the Rockies lost 8-2. Gomber, the former Cardinal, is familiar with the Pirates, having faced them eight times. In his four starts against the Bucs, he’s 0-2 with a 10.20 ERA.

 112.
Jones, just 22, has never faced the Rockies. He’s coming off a tough, 3-2 loss at San Francisco. He gave up three runs over five innings. He enters Saturday’s game tied with the Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto with the most strikeouts (42) among all major league rookies. He’s had seven or more strikeouts in his first five career games and has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his first six big-league starts.

 139.
Colorado Rockies set ignominious franchise record by trailing in 31 straight games

 140.

Just how low can the Rockies go? There’s no telling, not after getting swept in Miami by another bad baseball team.

 141.
The Marlins finished their three-game broom job with a 5-4 walk-off win in the 10th inning Thursday afternoon at loanDepot park. The Marlins’ Jesus Sanchez lined a single to left off lefty reliever Jalen Beeks to drive in ghost runner Luis Arraez.

 142.
After the game, the Rockies closed the clubhouse to the media to hold a team meeting, presumably to figure out how to stop the bleeding.

 143.
Manager Bud Black declined to comment on what was said in the meeting, telling MLB.com: “It’s sensitive, right? It’s sensitive for the manager and the coaches to the team. So I’ll keep that within our clubhouse, but it’s a fair question.”

 144.
The Rockies, who have lost five straight games, slid to 7-24 overall and 2-17 on the road. They have yet to win a series this season, dropping nine and splitting one.

 145.
Black said the Rockies are still “playing with a lot of heart.”

 146.
“Morale is fine,” Black told MLB.com. “Guys are playing their (butts) off. We’re just not getting the clutch hit, or making a big pitch. Our guys, man, they’re fighting. It’s just not happening, and we’re not doing a lot offensively.

 147.
“I talked to them after the game and, you know, they’re frustrated because of the tough losses. But, man, this group has a lot of heart. We’re just not getting it done on the field.”

 148.
Colorado’s offensive ineptitude is stunning. On Thursday, it struck out 16 times, went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position, and left nine men stranded.

 149.
The Rockies botched a chance to score the go-ahead run in the ninth. Brendan Rodgers and Jordan Beck opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Jake Cave put down a bunt back to the mound. Reliever Anthony Maldonado threw wildly to third, attempting to force out Rodgers. Rodgers broke toward home as the ball went into left field but then held up, and Becked was tagged out in no-man’s land between second and third.

 150.
The Rockies also wasted stellar relief work from lefty Ty Blach. In the fourth, he rescued starter Peter Lambert, coming on to get the dangerous Arraez to ground into an inning-end double play. Blach pitched four innings, giving up three hits but no walks and no runs.

 151.
The Rockies made some bad history in the first inning.

 152.
The Marlins scored twice, marking the 31st time in 31 games to start this season that the Rockies have trailed at some point in a game, extending their modern-era major league record. Moreover, trailing in 31 consecutive games is the longest streak at any point in a season in franchise history. The 1998 Rockies trailed in 30 consecutive games from June 15 to July 20.

 153.
Miami didn’t waste any time getting to Lambert. Arraez led off with a double, Bryan De La Cruz walked and Jazz Chisholm drove in Arraez with a single to left. Chisholm scored on Jesus Sanchez’s sacrifice fly.

 154.
In the second, Colorado responded with a three-run homer by catcher Jacob Stallings to take a short-lived 3-2 lead.

 155.
The Marlins tied the game on Josh Bell’s one-out solo homer off Lambert in the third and took a 4-3 lead in the fourth. Lambert walked Dane Myers to open the inning, Myers stole second and advanced to third on Lambert’s wild pitch. He scored on Nick Fortes’ single to center.

 156.
Colorado tied the game, 4-4, in the fifth, combining a leadoff walk by Jake Cave, a single by Stallings and a walk by Hunter Goodman to load the bases against starter Edward Cabrera. Reliever Calvin Faucher got Ezequiel Tovar to ground into a double play, but Cave was able to score.

 157.
Lambert’s ERA soared to 5.66 after going 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.

 209.
Quantrill had been pitching well, tossing three consecutive quality starts, until the Astros beat him up last Saturday in Mexico City. The right-hander was tagged for six runs on six hits, including two home runs, with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings. Quantill has pitched four times against the Pirates (three starts), going 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA. His last start against the Pirates came in 2021 at PNC Park when he pitched five scoreless innings.

 210.
Perez, 33, is coming off a strong start at San Francisco’s Oracle Park when he allowed one unearned run in six innings but got a no-decision. The lefty has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his first six starts, and he’s allowed just one home run in 34 2/3 innings. Perez is 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA in six career starts against the Rockies. He notched a victory last season against the Rockies while pitching for Texas, allowing two runs over seven innings in the Rangers’ 7-2 victory.

 236.
Colorado is approaching the franchise record for games without a consecutive win, set at 35 in May and June in 2022.

 237.

New month, same awful Rockies.

 238.
The Colorado club that is becoming nearly impossible to watch lost again on Wednesday at loanDepot Park, dropping to 7-23 in the club’s worst-ever 30-game start.

 239.
In the 4-1 defeat in Game 2 in Miami, the Rockies wasted a strong outing by Dakota Hudson and, in a familiar refrain, lacked clutch hits. They mustered just four knocks overall, and also committed two errors while making the Marlins, the National League’s other hopeless cellar-dweller, look good.

 240.
“We’ve got to keep fighting,” Rockies manager Bud Black told reporters. “The youth on this team is being served. … It’s baptism by fire, and they’re learning it’s hard in the big leagues against big-league pitching.

 241.
“Both sides, offense and pitching, have to improve to gain some traction.”

 242.
Hudson threw 5 2/3 innings, with the damage coming in the fifth off a Luis Arráez RBI single and a Bryan De La Cruz RBI double. After that, Jake Bird got Colorado out of the sixth and threw a scoreless seventh, but then Nick Mears was dinged for two runs in the eighth off Dane Myers’ two-RBI single.

 243.
“Hudson had a bit of an uptick in his delivery, a little bit better tempo, and if you noticed a little quick-step and more aggressiveness and momentum through his windup, especially,” Black said. “The fastball had good sink and the breaking ball had good depth to it, and he got a lot of groundballs (with 10), which is his game.”

 244.
As Miami plated those four runs, all the Rockies offense could muster was Elias Diaz’s RBI groundout in the sixth. Colorado only had one extra-base hit, a double by Ryan McMahon in the sixth, and was 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position.

 245.
Miami starter Roddery Muñoz finished with one earned run in six innings, with three hits and two walks to seven strikeouts.

 246.
“He had a pretty good arm,” Black said. “His ball-strike ratio was great, and coming in based off our scouting report, we knew he could pretty erratic. But he wasn’t. He had a good, live fastball that kept us honest, and the pitches that got us (off-balance) was a cutter and the slider.”

 247.
With the defeat, Colorado lost another series, giving the Rockies nine series defeats and one series split in 10 tries. That extends the longest stretch to open a season without winning a series in franchise history.

 294.
In Wednesday’s loss, the Rockies — who on Tuesday became the first team in baseball’s modern era to trail in each of its first 29 games while blowing a 5-0 ninth-inning lead in the series opener — matched another franchise low.

 295.
By trailing in all 30 games this year, this club tied the Colorado record for trailing in consecutive games at any point in a season, set in a dismal stretch from June 15 to July 20 in 1998.

 296.
Next up on the infamy checklist: Colorado is approaching the franchise record for games without a consecutive win, set at 35 in May and June in 2022. The Rockies now have the worst record in the National League.

 349.
Lambert was effective his last time out, blanking the Padres for 2 2/3 innings on April 25 at Coors Field in a long relief appearance that enabled the Rockies to mount a ninth-inning comeback later in the game. But his lone start this year was a disaster, as the Mariners lit him up for six runs over three innings in a 10-2 loss in Denver on April 21. On a positive note, he’s done well keeping the ball in the yard, with just one homer allowed over 17 1/3 innings. The Marlins have seen very little of him. In the case of Cabrera, he’s regressed since notching a quality start in his first outing of the year. In the two games since, Cabrera’s been shaky, including yielding five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to Washington last week. Elias Diaz has a homer and a double off him in four at-bats.

 382.
At what point does Rockies manager Bud Black's job security come into question?

 383.

Denver Post sports writer Patrick Saunders with the latest installment of his Rockies Mailbag.

 384.
Pose a Rockies- or MLB-related question for the Rockies Mailbag.

 385.
At what point does Bud Black’s job security come into question? I know he doesn’t have the most talented roster to work with. Still, it seems like they also keep shooting themselves in the foot with coaching mistakes like baserunning errors and mismanaged lineups (Kris Bryant is batting third or fourth, and Ezequiel Tovar is starting the year batting seventh). I know Bud is well-liked in the organization, and he’s fairly cheap, but at some point, isn’t there a need for fresh ideas in the dugout?

 386.
— Greg, Denver

 387.
Greg, I honestly don’t know what Black’s future is with the team.

 388.
During spring training, Black and owner Dick Monfort had preliminary discussions about a contract extension that would keep Black with the team through 2025. I recently asked Black about the status of that extension, and he told me that he couldn’t discuss “confidential negotiations.”

 389.
Could it be that the Rockies’ terrible start has put Black’s extension on hold? Possibly.

 390.
Could Black be rethinking his future with the team? Possibly, but he still seems committed to helping build the Rockies’ future.

 391.
But I don’t think the Rockies will fire Black this season. Why? Because he’s done the best he could with a team bereft of major league talent. He’s repeatedly shuffled the lineup and mixed and matched his relief pitchers. I don’t think firing Black and bringing in another manager will turn things around.

 392.
The bottom line is that making Black the scapegoat for the Rockies’ failures is not the solution.

 393.
In your honest opinion, do the Rockies stand a chance of getting out of this early season funk, or is the season already kaput? What needs to change?

 394.
— Ed Helinski, Auburn, N.Y.

 395.
Ed, it depends on how you define kaput. If you mean they’ll finish in last place in the National League West and post a sixth-consecutive losing record, then their season is kaput.

 396.
But here’s the thing. We all knew this would be a rough season — the Rockies’ brass knew it, too — but I didn’t think the Rockies would be this bad. Between Kris Bryant’s back injury and slumps by Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Jones, the Rockies’ offense is awful. Its 23 home runs are the third-fewest in the majors, and its .684 OPS ranks 21st, despite playing its home games at Coors Field. The Rockies’ 277 strikeouts are the sixth-most, while their 77 walks are the third-fewest.

 397.
Colorado pitchers have posted a 6.06 ERA, the worst in the majors by more than a run (the White Sox have a 5.02 team ERA).

 398.
Having pontificated about all of that, the Rockies’ goal this season was to test their young players, evaluate their futures, and start building for the future. It will take more than 28 games to determine whether the team is progressing. We’ll see several young players get their chance in the coming months, starting with outfielder Jordan Beck, who will debut in Miami this week.

 399.
The Rockies are on pace for 126 losses this year. They can’t be this bad all year, right? This is futility on a historic level.

 400.
— Madden, Denver

 401.
Madden, I’m not sure when you submitted your question, but as I write this, the Rockies are 7-21, a .250 winning percentage that puts them on pace to finish 41-121. There is no way the Rockies are going to lose 121 games. They’re bad, but for the love of Choo Choo Coleman, they’re not 1962 New York Mets bad.

 402.
I predicted the Rockies would finish 65-97, a small step forward from their 103-loss 2023 season. I didn’t think they could lose 100 games again, but now they certainly look to be headed in that direction. In the long run, it might not matter as long as the Rockies are truly committed to a rebuild.

 403.
Shouldn’t Kris Bryant admit his back severely limits his baseball future and do the honorable thing by retiring? I’m unsure how the financials work, but perhaps this frees up money for investing in others. No more free-agent position players. Grow our own or trade. All resources go to pitchers who adjust to pitching at altitude. Probably our own, as no free agent wants to come to Colorado. But those who have success should be well-rewarded.

 404.
— Ron Secrist, Longmont

 405.
Ron, Bryant’s seven-year, $182 million contract before the 2022 season is guaranteed. I can’t imagine he would walk away from that kind of money.

 406.
I don’t know how severe his back injury is. The Rockies have been tight-lipped about it, and Bryant rarely makes himself available to the media.

 407.
He’s been on the injured list since April 14. Bryant hit just .149 with one homer through 13 games this year, and his back could have been a factor in that slow start, even though the Rockies insisted he was healthy.

 455.
— Ed Helinski, Auburn, N.Y.

 456.
Ed, I don’t see a huge difference between Colorado’s April and May opponents. I suppose they could win a couple of games in Miami against the woeful Marlins and perhaps a game at Pittsburgh. But the Rockies play 15 of their 27 games on the road in May, so I don’t think they have an easier path. They have to play better.

 480.
All of that carnage on a night when Jordan Beck was impressive in his major league debut, Ryan Feltner nearly pitched a shutout, and Elehuris Montero blasted a rare home run on the road.

 481.

Leave it to the Rockies to ruin a couple of storybook endings.

 482.
In one of the worst meltdowns in recent memory, the Rockies blew a 5-0 lead in the ninth inning and lost 7-6 to the woeful Marlins in 10 innings Tuesday night at loanDepot park.

 483.
In losing again, the Rockies became the first team since 1900 to trail in each of its first 29 games. The Rockies lost to Houston on Sunday, joining the 1910 St. Louis Browns as the only teams to trail in each of their first 28 games.

 484.
“That was a tough one … we shot ourselves in the foot,” manager Bud Black said.

 485.
The Rockies nearly dodged ignominy. Ryan McMahon hit an RBI double to right to score Sean Bouchard to give the Rockies a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth, but the Marlins scored twice in the bottom of the frame off left-hander Jalen Beeks.

 486.
Bryan De La Cruz hit an RBI double off Beeks to score pinch runner Tim Anderson, tying the game at 6-all. Then Dane Myers punched a single to right fielder Hunter Goodman, who made a perfect throw to the plate, but catcher Elias Diaz couldn’t handle the throw, and Anderson scrambled around Diaz and tagged the plate with his hand for the winning run.

 487.
Black told reporters in Miami, ” ‘Goody’ made a good play, but ‘Ellie’ couldn’t handle it.”

 488.
All of that carnage on a night when Jordan Beck was impressive in his major league debut, Ryan Feltner nearly pitched a shutout, and Elehuris Montero blasted a rare home run on the road.

 489.
But the Rockies suffered an epic and ugly ninth-inning collapse in a game featuring the National League’s two worst teams. Colorado, swept by the Astros in Mexico City last weekend, tumbled to 7-22. The Marlins, losers of seven straight games entering Tuesday, improved to 7-24.

 490.
Feltner, who had flashed potential numerous times in his career, gave up only three harmless singles over the first eight innings. But in the ninth, Vidal Brujan led off with a single, Feltner plunked Christian Bethancourt, and Luis Arraez ripped an RBI double to right, scoring Brujan.

 491.
That was it for Feltner, who was clearly unhappy when Black lifted him from the game. In came closer Justin Lawrence, who immediately melted down.

 492.
In quick succession, Miami’s Bryan De La Cruz drew a walk, Dane Myers hit a two-run single, Josh Bell singled to load the bases, and Lawrence, lacking any semblance of command, hit Jesus Sanches to drive in another run.

 493.
The Marlins tied the game, 5-5, on Emmanuel Rivera’s sacrifice fly to right. That was it for Lawrence. Black summoned Beeks to try and stop the avalanche of trouble. He did, at least for two-thirds of an inning, striking out Nick Gordon and getting Christian Bethancourt to fly out.

 494.
Beck, the highly touted outfield prospect, made his big league debut and hit 2 for 4. Starting in left field and hitting eighth, Beck singled in the first off right-hander Sixto Sanchez and added another single in the sixth off right-hander Declan Cronin.

 495.
“Just take the moment in, take a deep breath, look around and be where my feet are,” Beck told reporters about his first day with the Rockies. “A lot of people say write it down, what it feels like, don’t forget it. There are a lot of things that you want to remember from this day and carry on into the future.”

 496.
The first pitch Beck saw in his major league career was a ball, well outside the strike zone. The second pitch was a slider over the inside of the plate, and Beck lined the ball to center field for his first hit.

 497.
The Rockies scored all but one of their runs in the first off Sanchez. Ezequiel Tovar led off with a double and advanced to third on Brenton Doyle’s sacrifice bunt. McMahon singled in Tovar and advanced to second on Diaz’s groundout.

 498.
Charlie Blackmon, who entered the game in a deep funk, slashing .119/.159/.143 over his last 12 games, drove in McMahon with a single to right. Then Brendan Rodgers singled up the middle, setting the table for Montero’s 409-foot, three-run homer.

 499.
Colorado had only three hits after the first inning, but with Feltner on the mound, it didn’t matter until the ninth and 10th innings.

 500.
Still, Feltner said he let his team down.

 501.
“It will take a while for me to think about my performance,” the right-hander told Rockies.TV. “I just think right now that I let the team down. I’ve got to finish off that ninth inning. I’ve never been in that position before, and now I’m hungry to get back there.”

 553.
Hudson is still searching for his first victory in a Rockies uniform. There’s a good chance it will come on Wednesday because the right-hander has a good track record vs. Miami. In six career appearances against the Marlins (three starts), he is 2-0 with a 3.54 ERA. He’s 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in four career appearances (one start) in Miami. Hudson, however, had a rough time in his last start this season. Although the Rockies beat the Padres 10-9 at Coors Field, he allowed six runs on six hits with four walks over 3 1/3 innings. He did not factor in the decision.

 578.

MEXICO CITY — Kyle Tucker and the Houston Astros had a very successful stay in Mexico City.

 579.
Tucker, Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña each hit a solo homer, helping Framber Valdez and the Astros beat the Colorado Rockies 8-2 on Sunday.

 580.
Tucker and Yainer Diaz each drove in two runs as Houston swept the two-game series at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium.

 581.
“The plan was to use the series as a springboard looking forward,” Astros manager Joe Espada said. “We want this series to be like a new beginning for us. We need to have more urgency.”

 582.
Valdez (1-0) pitched five innings of two-run ball in his first big league start since April 2. The left-hander allowed five hits, struck out six and walked none.

 583.
“He threw the ball well the first couple of innings,” Espada said. “Command was not there, but he settled in the third and he gave us five innings. It was encouraging to see the way he threw the ball.”

 584.
Valdez had been sidelined by elbow inflammation, one of several pitching injuries that had contributed to Houston’s 9-19 start. Justin Verlander is back, but the Astros are awaiting the return of José Urquidy, Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers Jr. at some point this season.

 585.
“When the rotation is healthy, we have proved that we can do great things in the postseason,” Espada said.

 586.
Elias Díaz had two hits for Colorado, and Sean Bouchard and Jacob Stallings each drove in a run. Austin Gomber (0-2) was charged with four runs and six hits in seven innings.

 587.
The Rockies have dropped 11 of 14 games.

 588.
“We have not played our best baseball and our record is indicative of that, but the players come with energy to compete. There has not been one sign of them not being happy,” manager Bud Black said. “We will continue to play hard.”

 589.
Houston had lost five in a row before arriving in Mexico City, scoring a total of 10 runs during the slide. But it fared much better at Alfredo Harp Helu, with its elevation of 7,349 feet.

 590.
Yordan Alvarez hit two homers and Tucker also went deep during Saturday’s 12-4 victory.

 591.
Tucker connected in the first inning in the finale of the two-game set. Altuve went deep in the third, and Peña hit his third homer in the fourth.

 592.
It was Houston’s second regular-season visit to Mexico. It swept two games in Monterrey against the Angels in May 2019.

 593.
The Astros also played exhibition games in Mexico against the Padres in 2016 and Marlins in 2004.

 594.
The Rockies also had played in Mexico before. They beat San Diego in Monterrey in their 1999 season opener.

 670.

MEXICO CITY — Yordan Alvarez hit two home runs, Kyle Tucker added a solo shot and the Houston Astros beat the Colorado Rockies 12-4 on Saturday night in the MLB World Tour: Mexico City Series to snap a five-game losing streak.

 671.
Alvarez hit a two-run homer to center field and Tucker followed with a shot to left field and the Astros took a 4-2 lead in the third. Alvarez hit his seventh home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning.

 672.
Alvarez went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Yainer Diaz had three hits and scored three runs.

 673.
Ronel Blanco (3-0) allowed two hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

 674.
The Rockies’ Cal Quantrill (0-3) allowed six hits and six earned runs in five innings.

 675.
Houston arrived in Mexico City after scoring just six runs in a three-game sweep at the hands of the Chicago Cubs, but the team took advantage of the 7,349-foot (2,240-meter) elevation of the Alfredo Harp Helu stadium to break the offensive slump with 15 hits against the Rockies.

 676.
The Rockies took the lead on Ryan McMahon’s two-run homer to center field in the bottom of the first.

 677.
The Astros pulled ahead for good 3-1 after Alvarez and Tucker hit homers in the third.

 678.
The series marks the Astros’ second regular-season visit to Mexico. In May 2019, they swept the Angels in two games played in Monterrey. The Astros also played exhibition games in Mexico against the Padres in 2016 and Marlins in 2004.

 679.
The Rockies, who came south of the border after beating the Padres 10-9 at Coors Field, have yet to win consecutive games this season, the longest such stretch to begin a season in franchise history.

 680.
Colorado played their second regular-season game in Mexico. In 1999, they beat San Diego in their season opener, also at Monterrey.

 681.
URQUIDY MISSES THE CHANCE

 682.
José Urquidy played with the Astros in a exhibition game against the San Diego Padres in Mexico City in 2016, but a right arm injury left him out of the series against the Colorado Rockies.

 683.
“Back then (2016) I was a kid just dreaming of playing in the majors. It was a long process for me to become a starter in the MLB, but I made it,” said Urquidy, who despite not being able to play was joined by family and friends.

 684.
The right-hander, who was born in Mazatlan, invited some of his closest friends, some of whom lack a visa to enter the United States and have never seen a major league game.

 733.
Sunday’s pitching matchup

 734.
Astros LHP Framber Valdez (0-0, 2.19 ERA) vs. Rockies LHP Austin Gomber (0-1, 4.32)

 735.
2:05 p.m. Sunday in Mexico City

 736.
TV: ESPN

 737.
Radio: 850 AM/94.1 FM

 738.
Gomber has been relatively reliable so far this season, allowing three earned runs or fewer in all but one of his five starts and tossing five innings or more each of his past three. The lefty was solid his last time out — a no decision vs. the Padres at Coors Field that saw him give up one run on four hits, three walks and two strikeouts in five innings of work. Gomber has faced the Astros twice, going 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

 739.
Valdez, coming off back-to-back All-Star seasons, will make his first start since going on the injured list April 9 with left elbow inflammation. He was in complete command his last time out, tossing 7 2/3 innings of scoreless ball against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 2. He had five strikeouts without issuing a walk and allowed six hits. Valdez last faced Colorado in 2021 and is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA over two starts vs. the Rockies.

 775.
Picture this: It's the summer of 2027, and two emerging stars are making Coors Field a true baseball draw again.

 776.

Picture this: It’s the summer of 2027, and two emerging stars are making Coors Field a true baseball draw again.

 777.
The Rockies are competitive for the first time in a decade, and just wrapped up a critical late-August series win over the Dodgers. Chase Dollander spun a gem to catapult Colorado into first place in the NL West, and first-time all-star Jordan Beck hit the game-winning homer, his 30th of the year.

 778.
While that may seem like a purple-tinted tableau right now, as the Rockies are tracking toward another 100-loss season, it could be reality. Dollander and Beck, once college teammates at Tennessee, have all the tools to be pillars of the Rockies’ resurgence in due time.

 779.
They won’t be able to make Colorado relevant by themselves, of course.

 780.
The Rockies will need to hit on more starting pitchers to assist Dollander in revitalizing the rotation — guys like Carson Palmquist and Gabriel Hughes, with some possible help from Antonio Senzatela and Kyle Freeland at the end of their contracts.

 781.
The Rockies will also need solid bats to match Beck’s ability to hit for power and average — guys like Adael Amador, Drew Romo, Yanquiel Fernandez and Sterling Thompson, in addition to then-veterans Ryan McMahon and Ezequiel Tovar.

 782.
But make no mistake: Dollander and Beck are central figures in whatever hope there is for the rebuild. Their timetables for arrival in LoDo are different, but their potential impact in reshaping the franchise is equally gargantuan.

 783.
Dollander just started his pro career in High-A Spokane this year, where last year’s No. 9 overall pick opened with a good omen, tossing five shutout innings. He has a 2.93 ERA over three starts after getting shut down after the draft in 2023 due to his high workload at Tennessee.

 784.
The right-hander’s got a ways to go before we see him in purple pinstripes — his ETA is likely 2026 — but he has the stuff and the makeup of a future No. 1 starter.

 785.
The stuff? A high-90s fastball paired with plus breaking pitches (slider and curveball) as well as a developing changeup. It’s a four-pitch mix that’s got swing-and-miss and the ability to keep Colorado in games at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

 786.
“In college, I could go out there and stand with my glove on my head,” Beck said. “That’s what you want when you’re watching a guy throw, and you turn around and look at the scoreboard, and he’s throwing 98. That’s only going to continue. He’s going to be the real deal.”

 787.
The makeup? A guy who already walked through fire with the Vols, when he went from a national darling as a sophomore (10-0 with a 2.39 ERA and 108 strikeouts) to a draft question mark as a junior (120 K’s, but a 4.75 ERA amid some regression).

 788.
“I found that toward the beginning of my junior year, I was really thinking about how much people were worried about how I was performing rather than just focusing on myself and the team I had around me,” Dollander said. “I kind of got lost in what people were saying about me, so it became really hard, but I started working with a mental performance coach, and as soon as that happened everything turned around and I started pitching a lot better.

 789.
“The way I was able to handle that was taking it day-by-day and knowing that I need to just put one foot in front of the other. That’s the way I’m handling everything now.”

 790.
Beck is expected to arrive in the bigs much sooner, likely this summer with the way he continues to hit. After tearing up High-A in 2023 (Northwest League MVP) and then showing well in Double-A, Beck’s making Triple-A look like light work.

 791.
Through Thursday, the player Dollander describes as “a different animal” is batting .315 with five homers while seeing time in left, right and center.

 792.
Amid the hits and the hype, Beck’s staying patient. The outfielder saw how his roommate over the past couple years, Hunter Goodman, mashed his way to the majors. Beck plans on doing the same.

 793.
“I want to help in any way I can, as quickly as I can,” Beck said. “But I’m not going to dwell upon it either. I’m just going to keep playing ball, and when it happens, it happens.”

 794.
With Brenton Doyle entrenched in center field for the time being, Beck’s continued impressive play could make one of the Rockies outfielders currently on one-year contracts (Sean Bouchard and Jake Cave) expendable. Since Beck is not on the 40-man, Colorado could DFA one of those players in order to make room for Beck on the roster.

 795.
Another option? If Kris Bryant’s back continues to be an issue in the second half of the summer, the Rockies could put Bryant (at a $28 million salary, he’s trending toward a second straight negative WAR season) on the 60-day injured list to make room.

 842.
Whatever the case, Beck should be in LoDo by the end of the year, even if for a late-season call-up. And Dollander, considering his collegiate experience, should be in Double-A by the same time.

 843.
This isn’t to say there won’t be major-league growing pains for each player. But it’s best for the Rockies, who have no hope of winning right now, to get both players to the bigs ASAP and fast-track that acclimation. Should they do that, the club just might have its newest faces of the franchise by 2027.

 844.
So mark your magnetic fridge calendars. And if Beck’s bat and Dollander’s arm reach their full potential, you might want to clear that year’s October schedule as well.

 871.
As the Rockies take on the Astros in the 2024 Mexico City Series this weekend, Vinny Castilla is a legend coming home.

 872.

As the Rockies take on the Astros in the 2024 Mexico City Series this weekend, Vinny Castilla is a legend coming home.

 873.
The former Blake Street Bomber, now a special assistant to Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt, is arguably the most famous Mexican-born big league position player in MLB history. He’s also his native country’s most accomplished, as Mexico’s MLB career leader in homers (320), doubles (349), hits (1,884), runs (902) and RBIs (1,105).

 874.
“I’m sure Vinny’s going to be treated like the mayor on our trip,” third baseman Ryan McMahon quipped. “Everyone knows he’s beloved back there. We’re ready to see the fans mob the rockstar.”

 875.
“Cuz” grew up in Oaxaca, Mexico, about six hours southeast of where the Rockies will play Houston in Mexico City this Saturday and Sunday.

 876.
He originally signed with the Braves in early 1990 as a skinny shortstop prospect. As Castilla recalled, the Braves paid his Mexican League club, Saraperos de Saltillo, $25,000 for his rights. Castilla said he got about $6,000 of that.

 877.
That was the humble genesis of an MLB career that eventually led to two All-Star nods and three Silver Sluggers with Colorado. Of course, his 16-year big-league career, 13 of which were spent with the Braves and the Rockies, could’ve looked a lot different had Castilla been signed by another club.

 878.
Before signing with Atlanta, Castilla had tryouts with a handful of other teams, including the Reds, Dodgers, Rangers and Brewers. But none of those panned out, possibly because the asking price by his Mexican League team was too high.

 879.
“To this day, I don’t know if I wasn’t good enough for those teams, or if my Mexican League team was asking too much money for me,” Castilla said. “But I’m grateful for the way everything worked out.”

 880.
After debuting for the Braves as a September call-up in 1991, garnering just six plate appearances, Castilla spent most of 1992 in Triple-A. He played in only nine games for Atlanta that season, and at the time, projected as a light-hitting utility infielder.

 881.
But when the Braves left him unprotected in the 1992 expansion draft — holding onto current CU football coach Deion Sanders and a few other bubble players instead — Castilla got the first of two big breaks that paved the path to him becoming a Mexican baseball icon. The Rockies selected him with their 20th pick.

 883.
“That was the best thing to happen to me, was to come to Colorado and get a chance to play,” Castilla said.

 894.
In his debut with the Rockies in 1993, Castilla platooned at shortstop with Freddie Benavides. In 1994, he saw action at all four infield positions, including backing up Walt Weiss at shortstop, while also playing in Triple-A. Across those first two seasons in LoDo, Castilla hit just 12 homers in 157 games.

 895.
But when 1995 came, everything changed. Castilla broke out with 32 homers as the starting third baseman in a strike-shortened season. He earned his first All-Star nod and first Silver Slugger, and that was the start of him proving himself as one of the best fastball hitters of the 1990s.

 896.
“(Original Rockies GM) Bob Gebhard called me after that 1994 season ended with the strike and told me to be ready to play third base,” Castilla recalled. “I played it in instructional league, and then played third base in Mexico in the winter league to get ready. We didn’t sign Charlie Hayes back, and that was my opening. I took advantage of it.”

 897.
Castilla, who manages Sultanes de Monterrey in the winter Mexican League, knows it’s going to be a different ambiance at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium this weekend compared to what Colorado players are used to.

 898.
In the first MLB game played in Mexico City last year between the Padres and Giants, the blare of horns and a mariachi band behind home plate provided a soundtrack to a historic offensive output.

 899.
The game tied an MLB record with 10 players homering in the stadium at 7,349 feet, an elevation more than 2,000 feet higher than Coors Field. There will be a humidor in use for this weekend’s games, but it’s fair to expect lots of offense along with the energy of a sold-out bandbox crowd of 20,576. The stadium’s left and right field lines are 332 feet, while center is 410 feet.

 900.
“It’s going to be louder than the guys are used to,” said right-hander Justin Lawrence, who experienced a raucous international atmosphere when pitching for Panama in the World Baseball Classic in 2023. “I imagine it will be pretty similar to a soccer environment. Games here in the States, there’s noise but it kind of simmers down as the pitches come, unless it’s a big moment.

 901.
“Playing in Taiwan last year, it didn’t stop. It was just nine innings straight of noise, so I’m anticipating an environment like that.”

 902.
Castilla said he’s “excited to share in these games and moments with my people,” while Rockies manager Bud Black pitched the idea of expanding MLB’s World Tour. Since MLB international games began in 1996 with a Padres-Mets series in Monterrey, the league’s played regular-season games in Australia, Japan, Puerto Rico, England, Mexico and most recently South Korea.

 903.
The Rockies previously played a regular-season game at Estadio de Beisbol in Monterrey in the 1999 season opener. Colorado won, 8-2, and Castilla went 4 for 5 with a double and a run scored, much to the delight of the home crowd.

 905.
Those types of moments are why Black describes himself as “pro international” when it comes to putting MLB’s product on a global stage.

 906.
“The London Series (in 2019 between the Red Sox and Yankees) was fun, and the Korea experience this year, from what I heard from the people on the Padres and Dodgers, was a good experience,” Black said. “It’s great for baseball, to continue to grow the sport worldwide. I’d love to see (MLB games) played in many more countries than we’ve already played.”

 907.
The Rockies travel to Mexico on their off day, Friday, before playing on Saturday (4:05 p.m. MT) and Sunday (2:05 p.m. MT, ESPN). Castilla and former Rockies pitcher Jorge De La Rosa are throwing out the ceremonial first pitches on Sunday.

 932.
In the eighth inning of Thursday's series finale against San Diego, the Rockies' offense became the Big Purple Machine.

 933.

In the eighth inning of Thursday’s series finale against San Diego, the Rockies’ offense transformed into the Big Purple Machine.

 934.
Colorado batted around in that frame to erase a five-run deficit, plating six runs in the process. After closer Justin Lawrence cemented the team’s largest comeback of the season with a save in the ninth, the result was a signature moment of positivity amid a spring full of struggles.

 935.
Yes, the Rockies (7-19) have still yet to win a series in eight tries after splitting with San Diego, surpassing last season’s futility in that regard while also setting a franchise record to start a season. But Thursday provided a glimmer of hope and some signs that maybe, just maybe, this year’s team will avoid the 100-loss mark again.

 936.
“We just had to hang in there,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “Our guys are playing hard lately, and this was a good one for the guys for sure. It helps the vibe.”

 937.
Rookie right fielder Hunter Goodman highlighted the rally with a monster homer, his first of the year, while Brenton Doyle and Brendon Rodgers both had knocks in the inning to cap three-hit days for each player.

 938.
Colorado starter Daniel Hudson was bad, giving up six runs on six hits and four walks through 3 1/3 innings. And the offense, which showed early life, disappeared in the middle part of the game before re-emerging with a bang in the eighth.

 939.
The Rockies struck first when Doyle singled, got to third on a hit by Ryan McMahon, and then scored on Elias Diaz’s sacrifice fly. But the Padres got that run back the next inning when Luis Campusano led off with a single and then eventually scored on a groundout by José Azócar.

 940.
Both teams then put up three runs apiece in an eventful third inning.

 941.
The Padres’ half of the frame was highlighted by a leadoff double by Fernando Tatís Jr., who scored on Jurickson Profar’s single. Then, Ha-Seong Kim blasted a homer to left, turning on Hudson’s fastball to extend San Diego’s lead to 4-1. That inning’s output extended Colorado’s streak of trailing in each of its first 26 games this year, the longest MLB streak to start a season since the 1910 St. Louis Browns trailed in 28 straight games.

 942.
In the bottom of the inning, the Rockies retaliated with Diaz’s RBI groundout to score Ezequiel Tovar, followed by Elehuris Montero’s two-run bomb to left that tied the game at 4-4.

 943.
San Diego retook the lead off Hudson on Xander Bogaerts’ RBI double in the fourth, and after Peter Lambert replaced Hudson, Jake Cronenworth’s sacrifice fly made it 6-4.

 944.
After a scoreless fifth and sixth, Profar poured some salt in the wound in the seventh with a two-run homer to right off Nick Mears. The former Rockie watched his 405-foot no-doubter fly, then flipped his bat high in the air before trotting around the bases to give the Padres an 8-4 lead.

 945.
But Lambert holding the fort in those middle innings turned out to be key.

 946.
“Dakota had a rough one, but then Peter came in and calmed the waters for two and two-thirds,” Black said.

 947.
San Diego tacked on another run off Tyler Kinley in the eighth via Eguy Rosario’s RBI single. The game appeared to be in the books as the Padres held a 9-4 advantage entering the eighth.

 948.
But then the Rockies’ offense resurrected.

 949.
After Yuki Matsui yielded a walk and a double, he was replaced by Wandy Peralta, who promptly gave up a 448-foot blast to the recently recalled Goodman to left-center. It was the longest Colorado homer this year. Jacob Stallings and Tovar kept the train going with a single and a walk, respectively, before Doyle continued his hot day by singling Stallings home.

 950.
“I was looking for something up in the zone, and he hung a changeup and I was able to keep my weight back and I put a good swing on it,” Goodman said.

 951.
Tovar then scored on a passed ball to even the score 9-9, but Colorado wasn’t done. Stephen Kolek came on for San Diego, and the right-hander gave up a double to Diaz to give Colorado a 10-9 lead.

 953.
Doyle, hitting in the two-hole, continues to provide a spark for Colorado. He’s hit safely in eight of his last nine games, with a .406 average in that span and a .330 average overall. In addition to his hits on Tuesday, he stole two bases and scored three runs.

 954.
“Speed is one of my biggest attributes, so whenever I can get on and turn a single into a double, that’s huge,” Doyle said. “… I’ve simplified everything in my swing this year. Keeping the body a little quieter, keeping my head quieter and letting the ball come to me rather than trying to go get the ball. It’s been really successful so far.”

 955.
Colorado now heads to Mexico City for a two-game set with the Astros this weekend, followed by three-game road series in Miami and Pittsburgh. The Rockies return to Coors Field on May 7, for a six-game homestand against the Giants and reigning World Series champion Rangers.

 956.
“This is one of those wins that can definitely give a team momentum,” Goodman said.
