44.

The Vancouver Canucks are in the second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. On Saturday, Arturs Silovs of Ventspils, Latvia made 28 saves as the Canucks defeated the Nashville Predators 1-0 in game six of the Western Conference First Round Playoff Series. With the victory at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, the Canucks won the best out of seven series four games to two.

 45.
Silovs’s Game Six Performance

 46.
Silovs made six saves in the first period, 13 saves in the second period, and nine saves in the third period. 2020 Norris Trophy winner Roman Josi of Bern, Switzerland and left winger Jason Zucker of Newport Beach, California had four shots on goal each for the Predators to lead the team.

 47.
Silovs recorded his shutout in only his 12th career NHL game. He has played only nine games in the regular season and three in the playoffs.

 48.
Canucks goaltending situation

 49.
The Canucks have gone to Silovs because of injuries to Thatcher Demko of San Diego, California and Casey DeSmith of Rochester, New Hampshire. Demko, who should be considered one of the very best National Hockey League goaltenders in the game today is out with a serious knee injury, while DeSmith is out with a groin strain. Even though Demko is travelling with the Canucks, an appearance for him is highly unlikely for the remainder of the 2024 postseason.

 50.
Fourth Latvian goaltender with NHL shutout

 51.
Silovs became the fourth Latvian goaltender in NHL history to record a shutout. Arturs Irbe of Riga had 33 NHL regular season shutouts and one playoff shutout from 1992 to 2002. He had 20 shutouts with the Carolina Panthers, eight shutouts with the San Jose Sharks, three shutouts with the Dallas Stars and two shutouts with the Canucks. Irbe’s playoff shutout came in game four of the 2002 Eastern Conference Finals, a 3-0 Hurricanes win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Elvis Merzlikins of Riga has had 10 regular season shutouts with the Columbus Blue Jackets since 2019-20, and Peter Skudra of Riga had six shutouts with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Canucks from 1998 to 2003.

 76.

Chase Purdy has had three-plus weeks to contemplate his early season struggles in the NASCAR Truck Series.

 77.
In seven starts, Purdy has registered just one top-five finish. In the other six events, his average finish was 23rd. Entering Saturday night’s Heart of America 200 at Kansas Speedway, Purdy’s team wanted to make a statement coming off the circuit’s break.

 78.
He did.

 79.
Purdy, the brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, earned the pole position Saturday afternoon with a hot lap of 175.735 mph, his second straight at the 1.5-mile tri-oval.

 80.
“It’s huge,” Purdy told Fox Sports. “It’s been kind of a struggle this season. The pole today is great for our momentum to go into tonight’s race.”

 81.
Purdy edged Ty Majeski during the qualifying run, beating the No. 98 Ford by 0.004 seconds.

 82.
With Purdy starting on the inside of the front row and teammates Rajah Caruth (175.08 mph) and Connor Mosack (174.989) playing P4 and P5, respectively Spire Motorsports qualified three of the top five machines for Saturday night’s event.

 87.
Ex-Truck Champ Jack Sprague Honored By Hall Nomination

 88.
As the Truck Series returns from a 22-day hiatus at Kansas, one of the circuit’s initial stars is back in the NASCAR spotlight.

 89.
Jack Sprague, a three-time series champion, is one of 15 nominees for the Class of 2025 NASCAR Hall of Fame. Among the series’ inaugural drivers in 1995, Sprague placed first or second in points standings five times over six years (1996-2001).

 90.
The Spring Lake, Mich., native competed until 2011, claiming 28 wins and 32 pole positions. He claimed series titles in 1997, ‘99 and 2001.

 91.
Sprague told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio how honored he was to be nominated.

 92.
“It’s the who’s who of the sport and even to be considered, (it’s) a big accomplishment,” he said.

 234.
The Lakers also dismissed the entire coaching staff, ESPN reported on Friday.

 235.
“We greatly appreciate Darvin Ham’s efforts on behalf of the Lakers and recognize the many accomplishments achieved over the past two seasons including last year’s remarkable run to the Western Conference finals,” Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka said in a statement. “We all want to thank Darvin for this dedication and positivity. While this was a difficult decision to make, it is the best course of action following a full review of the season. The organization will remain unwavering in its commitment to deliver championship-caliber basketball to Lakers fans around the world.”

 236.
The decision comes days after the Lakers lost their opening-round series against the Denver Nuggets in five games. Denver eliminated Los Angeles from the postseason in two consecutive seasons.

 237.
The Lakers held double-digit leads in their four losses to the Nuggets. However, Ham made questionable rotation decisions, allowing the Nuggets to climb back into each game.

 238.
Hired to replace Frank Vogel in 2022, Ham went 90-74 in two seasons and 9-12 in the postseason.

 239.
Under Ham, the Lakers won the 2023 In-Season Tournament and made the Play-In Tournament in Ham’s two seasons.

 245.
With Ham out, the Lakers will need their third head coach in four seasons.

 246.
Los Angeles Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue is one of the Lakers’ top targets. However, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday that the Clippers want to sign Lue to a contract extension.

 247.
Mike Budenholzer, who led the Milwaukee Bucks to an NBA championship in 2021, will be in contention for the Lakers job, along with ESPN analyst JJ Redick and Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson.

 248.
With LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers are an attractive destination for a coach who wants to compete for a championship. However, the front office must work with the new head coach to upgrade the roster behind James and Davis.

 272.

The Los Angeles Angels have had a rather busy week. First according to Lindsay Crosby of Sports Illustrated on Wednesday, they signed outfielder Kevin Pillar of West Hills, California. Then on Thursday, they traded relief pitcher Jimmy Herget of Tampa, Florida to the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations according to Anthony Franco of mlbtraderumors.com.

 273.
Kevin Pillar

 274.
Pillar joins his ninth Major League Baseball team. He was previously with the Toronto Blue Jays from 2013 to 2019, the San Francisco Giants in 2019, the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies in 2020, the New York Mets in 2021, the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, the Atlanta Braves in 2023, and the Chicago White Sox in 2024. The Angels signed Pillar after he was designated for assignment by the White Sox. There was a recent opening in the Angels outfield as Angels star outfielder Mike Trout is out four to six weeks with a knee injury.

 275.
Pillar struggled mightily for the White Sox this season. He only batted .160 with one home run and four runs batted in.

 276.
In 2023 with the Braves, Pillar batted .228 with the Braves with nine home runs and 32 runs batted in. During 81 games, 197 at bats, and 206 plate appearances. Pillar scored 29 runs, and had 45 hits, 10 doubles, four stolen bases, six walks, 82 total bases, three sacrifice flies, an on base percentage of .248, and a slugging percentage of .416.

 277.
Jimmy Herget

 278.
Herget is joining his fourth Major League team after one season with the Cincinnati Reds (2019), two seasons with the Texas Rangers (2020 and 2021), and three seasons with the Los Angeles Angels (2021 to 2023). In 29 games with the Angels in 2023, he had a record of two wins and four losses with an earned run average of 4.66. In 29 innings pitched, Herget had 26 strikeouts, six holds and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.41, and gave up 33 hits, 15 earned runs, seven home runs and eight walks. Herget beat the Texas Rangers 7-3 on June 13 and the Seattle Mariners 8-5 on September 11.

 296.

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll of Dardenne Prairie, Missouri made National Hockey League history by becoming the first goalie ever to win an elimination game as his first three Stanley Cup Playoff victories. He accomplished the feat on Thursday in a 2-1 Maple Leafs win over the Boston Bruins. With the game six win at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, the Maple Leafs tied the best out of seven Eastern Conference First Round Series at three games apiece, and will now play the Bruins on Saturday night at the Toronto Dominion Garden in Boston, Massachusetts for the seventh and deciding game. (That last sentence is not a misprint. The Bruins do play in a home arena named after a Toronto bank).

 297.
Look at the three Woll wins

 298.
Woll’s first playoff win came in game four of the second round of the 2023 Eastern Conference Playoff Series versus the Florida Panthers. Woll replaced Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov of Magnitogorsk, Russia in game three of the series, but lost 3-2 on an overtime winner by Sam Reinhart of West Vancouver, British Columbia. In the fourth game of the series with the Panthers leading 3-0, Woll made 24 saves on 25 shots in a 2-1 Toronto win. Florida closed out the series with a game five 3-2 overtime win. Nick Cousins of Belleville, Ontario scored the game-winning goal.

 299.
In the first round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Bruins were leading the Maple Leafs 3-0 heading into the third period of game four when Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe made a change. He replaced Samsonov with Woll. The American netminder made five saves on all five shot attempts in the final frame, and gained Keefe’s trust for the fifth game of the series, a 2-1 Toronto win. In the fifth game, Woll made 27 saves on 28 shots, while Matthew Knies of Phoenix, Arizona scored the overtime winner. Then on Thursday, the Maple Leafs won by an identical 2-1 score as game five. William Nylander scored twice, while Woll made 22 saves on 23 shots. Boston’s lone goal came less than a second left.

 399.

The Minnesota Twins are on quite the winning streak. In fact they have a 10-game winning streak, their longest winning streak in 15 years according to Jason Owens of Yahoo! Sports.

 400.
The longest winning streak in Twins franchise history

 401.
The Twins franchise had a 17-game win streak in 1912 when the franchise was known as the Washington Senators. The longest streak for the Minnesota Twins was 15 games in 1991. This is the longest Twins streak since 2008, when they won 10 straight games.

 402.
Who have the Twins beaten during the streak?

 403.
The streak began on April 22, when they swept the Chicago White Sox at home. They won by scores of 7-0, and 6-5, and two games with identical scores of 6-3. Minnesota then swept the Los Angeles Angels in southern California 5-3, 16-5, and 11-5. Then over the last three games, the Twins have swept the White Sox again by scores of 3-2, 6-5, and 10-5. This time Minnesota swept Chicago at Guaranteed Rate Field in south Chicago, after sweeping them a week ago at Target Field in Minneapolis. The White Sox have won their 10 games by a total score of 76-36.

 404.
Who is hot for the Twins?

 405.
There are two players at this time red hot for Minnesota. They are shortstop Willi Castro of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, and third baseman Jose Miranda of Manati, Puerto Rico. In the last week, Castro is batting .452 with six extra base hits (four doubles and two triples), along with eight singles. He has also scored six runs, and had five runs batted in, 22 total bases and two stolen bases. Miranda is batting .526 with 10 hits in 19 at bats. He has three runs, four doubles, one home run, five runs batted in, and 17 total bases.

 406.
Where are the Twins in the standings?

 407.
Minnesota is red hot, but have only won 17 of 30 games. That is because they got off to a horrible start where they only won seven of their first 20 games. Despite the 10-game winning streak, they are only in fourth place in the American League Central. Cleveland leads at 20 wins and 10 losses. Kansas City is second at 19 wins and 13 losses, and Detroit is third at 18 wins and 13 losses.
