20.
Who do they play at home and who do they play on the road?

It’s no secret that last season did not go as anyone had hoped for the Purdue women’s basketball team. Head Coach Katie Gearlds’ squad never truly found a rhythm as they finished the season with a 15-19 overall record including a 5-13 conference record. That placed them in a tie for 11th place with just Northwestern and Rutgers behind them. It wasn’t what anyone wanted especially after last season’s surprise entrant into the NCAA Tournament. Even thought they lost that first round game by a bucket there was still a school of thought, and I count myself among this school, that Purdue would be able to build on this and begin the process of becoming that program we’ve always been so proud of. It didn’t happen. Now, with all 5 starters departing the program it’s time to rebuild and now we know who Purdue will face in the conference season and where we will face them.

 27.

 28.
You’ll notice first that unlike the men, the women are continuing the 18 game schedule. That means there will be just one team that Purdue will place twice given that the conference moves to 18 teams next year. That team is not surprising. IU. Great for the rivalry but honestly a very tough team to draw a guaranteed two games against for now. They’ve been a very good team for a number of years now.

 29.
Home

 49.

 50.
So there we go. It’s an all new Big Ten and an all season with an all new starting five. It will be up to Coach Gearlds to continue to rebuild this program.

 68.

 69.
 70.
Hudson Card, Marcos Davila, Ryan Browne, and Bennett Meredith should set Purdue up for success this fall.

Most of the time, quarterback play will determine how a season will go. The good news for Ryan Walters and Graham Harrell, is their quarterbacks on the roster are pretty talented.

 71.
During the 2023 campaign, you could argue that it was an up-and-down year with Hudson Card behind center, but Purdue was exponentially better when he was on the field. I still have the gut feeling that the Boilermakers would have beaten Northwestern if they had their starting Quarterback instead of throwing Browne and Meredith into the fire.

 72.
But, injuries happen, and happen often, at Purdue. This year, the importance of keeping Hudson Card upright will be at a premium, so if you look at the transfer portal and players coming to Purdue, there was such a focus on the offensive line.

 73.
Sure, Card can run around, extend plays, and make guys better around him. Now imagine that skill set with an offensive line that is not openly getting beat, that could be the case this Fall.

 74.
Not only does Purdue have Hudson Card as the leader of their quarterbacks, but they also have an outstanding true freshman in Marcos Davila, who is slated to be the backup quarterback.

 75.
Davila, at 6-3, 235 pounds is a big QB, that is more of a pocket passer than a play extender. The true freshman enrolled early and it has paid off, at the Spring Game he made outstanding throws, ripping the ball all over the field.

 76.
The assumption could be made that Ryan Browne is then the third quarterback. Browne brings a different dynamic to the quarterback room, as he is a runner first. I would love to see a package specific to Browne, similar to some of the heavy run formations we saw with him during the Northwestern Game.

 77.
Lastly, Bennett Meredith, a redshirt sophomore, received some playing time last season when Card was hurt. Meredith will compete with Browne for the third quarterback spot, but ultimately, if the Boilers were down both Card and Davila, I think we would see split time at the position between Browne and Meredith.

 78.
Card has an opportunity this season to get his name on draft boards for the Spring. He will have had two meaningful seasons as the starting quarterback for Purdue. If he has a successful 2024 season, I would not be surprised to hear his name called in the 2025 NFL Draft.

 79.
Davila, if forced into play, would require the playbook to be trimmed, but would not be as big as a falloff as many would think from QB1 to QB2, in terms of throwing ability, where Purdue would hurt is with the ability to extend plays.

 80.
Ryan Walters and Co. should feel more comfortable this year with who is behind center than last, Card with experience in a new system and legitimate backup will allow the Boilers to open the playbook up more than they were able to last fall.

 100.
I could say it’s the last look, but I’ll never stop talking about this season.

The latest episode of the podcast is out and after a long absence Ryan is back with me to look back at what obviously was a record breaking season for Purdue in any number of ways. Well, we talk about nearly all of those ways in this one. It just gives me great joy to talk about everything that happened this season, but there’s more work to be done to prepare for next season, so next week we will look ahead to what the returning players will need to work on in the offseason.

 101.
Ryan and I also discuss our pre-season predictions and how we did looking back at them. It’s strange to say that I played it safe when I picked Purdue to make the Final Four but it somehow felt that way. Perhaps that’s just the retrospective look at things but I’ll take being right regardless.

 123.
 124.
After splitting the first two games, Purdue and IU will play for the series Sunday afternoon.

After a 7 to 4 victory last night at Alexander Fied, Purdue suffered their first Big Ten setback in a couple of weeks Saturday afternoon, losing 10 to 2 to IU.

 125.
Standout freshman, Luke Gaffney returned to the field today after a three-game suspension due to an ejection at Northwestern last week and struggled mightily swinging the bat.

 126.
The slugger went 0 for 5 for the game, showing a bit of rust after his short suspension.

 127.
Luke Wagner suffered the loss for the game, though only two of the ten runs that were given up were earned by him. The standout pitcher came into the game with a 7-0 record on the season in 11 appearances and pitched 6.1 admirable innings before getting pulled.

 128.
It has not happened too often this season, but the bullpen was hit and hit hard. The relievers gave up 8 runs from the 7th inning to the 9th, with six of the runs coming at the top of the 7th, once Wagner was pulled.

 129.
While the outcome was disappointing, Purdue fans came out in droves, setting the attendance record for the third time this week, this time, the fan total was over 2,600 at Alexander Field.

 135.
 136.

 137.
Tomorrow, Purdue will host the series's rubber match, arguably the season's most important rubber match. If the Boilers win, they extend their lead atop the conference, with a loss, they will be tied with the Hoosiers.

 138.
Purdue is expecting a big crowd tomorrow afternoon, once again. The first pitch will be thrown at 1:00 PM. It will be hard to top today’s first pitch though, as Hall of Fame Coach, Gene Keady was the man in the arena.

 139.
According to the Baseball website, it will also be an opportunity to see many, many dogs, as Purdue plans to host their annual Bark at the Park.

 159.
 160.
Who are you most excited to see?

Survey results for the week are back in. This week we asked about the new entrants to the Big Ten and who you were most excited to see both at home and on the road. Keep in mind if you were that guy in the comments and said none of them or that the Big Ten should still be 10 teams you in essence voted for a third party and your vote didn’t count. That’s not how these surveys work. So good job throwing your vote away.

 161.
For those that did actually take part in the poll, here are your results.

 162.

 163.
 164.

 165.
It was no surprise to me to see Washington at the bottom of this list with just 9%. USC at the top also made sense with 46% because they are a big name program with a national reputation. I did think Oregon might be closer to the top but 36% was nothing to sneeze at. They of course have been to Ross-Ade in the recent past. Purdue and Oregon played a series of home and home games in 2008 and 2009. Purdue lost at home in double overtime and lost by two on the road. Purdue honestly should have won both of those games. Poor UCLA also stuck at the bottom here with 9%. Best part about seeing UCLA in Ross-Ade? The uniforms.

 166.
Next, I asked who you were excited to go on the road and see Purdue play at.

 167.

 168.
 169.

 170.
Results show it’s the same order as last time but more balanced. Perhaps because there’s a lot of things to do around Washington that brings it up in the rankings. USC again leads but this time with 31% and Oregon right on its tail with 26%. Overall, it seems like a well balanced set of choices for Purdue fans. I hope you get to plan a trip to one of these destinations in the future and see a Boilermaker victory!

 188.

 189.
 190.
How did we do?

Every now and then we try to hold ourselves accountable for the things we put out into the world on this here wonderful site. Most times though? We just forget and things go out into the ether never to return. Today is one of the times we are going to look back at what we predicted preseason.

 191.
Jumbo Hereos:

 192.
Here’s what I said prior to the start of the season:

 193.

 194.
Over the last few years when I did a podcast with Casey now at Boiler Upload he’s been the one who has always convinced me that Purdue was a final four team. I struggled to believe it for a number of reasons but one of those is of course the snake-bit life of a Purdue fan. This season though, I think it’s different. Zach Edey has returned and he’s angry. Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer have returned a year older and a year wiser. Then, there’s the addition of guys like Lance Jones and Myles Colvin. Purdue was close last year. I know the Fairleigh Dickinson loss didn’t show that, but the PK tournament did, the way they ran through their conference slate did.

 195.
If you know me personally, or listen to my various podcast appearances, you’ll know I’m a sucker for an emotional sports story. Ted Lasso was perfect to me. I love that show and will take any chance I get to evangelize for it. Things didn’t always end perfectly for AFC Richmond and that was okay, because ultimately, that’s life. Right now I am loving Welcome to Wrexham. Two soccer shows, and I don’t even really like soccer. Maybe it’s the sentimentality of these shows that makes me think the streak will end. Maybe it’s the Hollywood ending I dream of. Or maybe it’s just the black and old gold glasses clouding my vision. Either way, I believe.

 196.
The new additions will be enough. Purdue is making the Final Four this year (technically in 2024 but you get what I mean). The streak finally ends.

 197.

 198.
I called Purdue making the Final Four and of course I was right. Perhaps it’s one of those things where if you predict the same thing over and over again you’re bound to be right but as the years since 1980 showed us, you just never know if a team can make it back to the Final Four even with a good team. What a moment it was for Purdue to make the Final Four and I’m proud to say that just like AFC Richmond and Ted Lasso himself I always Believed in Believe.

 199.
Jed:

 200.
Here’s what Jed said in the preseason:

 201.

 202.
A Final Four is probably the easy way out here so let’s dig a little deeper here.

 203.
I think Purdue will win the B1G again by at least two games and then win the B1G Tourney to go back to back x2, a feat that has never been done in the history of the conference.

 204.
I’ll also say that Braden Smith ends up averaging 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal which would make him a First Team All B1G. If Purdue goes back to back and Smith had a season like that, it would be very hard to ignore.

 205.

 206.
Jed was right about the Big Ten title as Purdue won the conference by three games. He was wrong on the Big Ten Tournament title though so that’s a ding against him. As far as Braden Smith, he wound up averaging 12 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 7.5 apg, and 1.6 steals per game. So Jed missed only on the points per game there. Not bad I’d say.

 207.
Gabi:

 208.
Though Gabi has moved on from the site I still think it’s worth it to show how she did in the preseason:

 209.

Alright, here’s my bold prediction for this Purdue basketball season. I think we’re going to see more losses than we expect. We might stumble a bit out of the gate, drop a few games we probably shouldn’t. It’s not that we don’t have the talent - we do. But with all the hype and high expectations, I can see us getting a bit rattled early on. I also can see Edey’s game averages dip a bit. Why? Well, I think we’re going to be playing a smaller rotations against other smaller rotations, and that means a few less minutes for him on the court. But don’t panic, I don’t think this going to be a drastic change or a bad thing. In fact, I think these early struggles are going to be the making of us. We’ll learn from our mistakes, and grow stronger throughout the season. We’ll get it right when it matters most and start winning when it counts. And that’s when we’ll start our march to the Final Four. Yeah, you heard me. I’m predicting that this is the year the Boilers finally make it to the Final Four. Maybe I’m just manifesting, but gosh dang it after last year I need a redemption season.

 210.
I’d say she nailed the, we might drop a few games we probably shouldn’t. However, Edey’s ppg went up from 22.3 to 25.2. His rebounds did go down slightly from 12.9 to 12.2. Of course we did make the Final Four. Pretty good set of predictions overall.

 211.
Ryan:

 212.
Here’s Ryan’s bold predictions prior to the season:

 213.

As much as I would like to boldly predict that Purdue will make the Final Four or Zach Edey will shoot and make a 3 this season, I want to focus elsewhere. I think Lance Jones comes in and makes a big impact, especially on defense. Purdue has had mixed luck bringing in top scorers from smaller programs because moving up to this level is a whole new beast. Lance Jones is a defensive gamer though and I think that translates better between small and large programs. I predict that Lance Jones will make the Big Ten All-Defensive Team this season (alongside Zach Edey).

 214.
Lance Jones obviously came in and made a huge impact on the team, there’s no debate there. However, he did not make the Big Ten All Defense Team. Zach Edey did though. So overall not too shabby.

 215.

 234.

 235.
 236.
More than just a national title game run made for a memorable season for the Boilers

The 2023-2024 season was the most successful one in the history of the men’s basketball program for the Purdue Boilermakers. There is little to no argument of that statement given the amount of individual and team records that the team was able to accomplish on their way to a national title game appearance. It was the first appearance for the Boilers since Rick Mount led the Boilers to the title game against the UCLA Bruins in 1969.

 237.
Led by Zach Edey, the Boilers set the season record for wins in a season with 34. This broke the previous record of 30 that was set in the 2017-2018 season. The mark of an 87.2% (34-5) winning percentage is the second highest in program history since 1939, ranking behind only the 1987-1988 mark of 87.9% (29-4). They also went 17-3 in B1G Conference play, the first time the program had won 17 games in a single conference season and marked the second consecutive season they had won the conference by three games.

 238.
Purdue again achieved a number one ranking during the regular season, their third consecutive season doing so. That is the first time in B1G history a school has achieved that mark. It also achieved a second straight No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tourney, the fifth time that has happened in program history. The Boilers also joined only Kansas as programs to have received a top-5 seed in the NCAA Tourney in each of the last eight installments. Standing out over those last eight seasons is that Purdue has a dominating hold over the B1G conference with a 113-42 record, 16 games better than second place Michigan State (97-58).

 239.
Statistically speaking, Purdue set a number of team records as well. The Boilers set a record for points scored (3,211), rebound margin (+11.2), assists (720), assist to turnover ratio (1.63), field goals made (1,109), free throws made (675), and free throws attempted (938). The Boilers also shot the ball incredibly well from behind the arc going 40.4% as a team from three point range. As good as that is, it still ranks only 4th best all time in program history.

 240.
Individually, the records and awards start with one of the best college basketball players of all time: Zach Edey. The Boiler big man was named the first back to back unanimous National Player of the Year since Bill Walton 50 years ago. Edey also became the first player since Oscar Robertson in 1960 to lead the country in scoring and reach the Final Four in the same season. He also set a B1G record of 12 career B1G Player of the Week honors.

 241.

 242.

 243.
For the 1️⃣2️⃣th time in his career…

Zach Edey has been named Big Ten Player of the Week.

: 2-0 record.
: 26.5 PPG, 11.0 RPG, 3.0 APG, 2.5 BPG.
: 12 weekly honors in last 34 weeks dating to last year. pic.twitter.com/v6IfmySvxf
— Purdue Men's Basketball (@BoilerBall) March 11, 2024

 245.
 246.
 247.

 248.
From a statistical standpoint, Edey scored 983 points and grabbed 474 rebounds, the second most in those regards in B1G history and joining only Elvin Hayes of Houston with those numbers in a single season. In terms of rebounding, Edey holds two of the five best single rebounding seasons in B1G history with Jerry Lucas holding the other three. The 983 points is the 22nd best single scoring season in NCAA history. His 30 double-doubles ranks fourth all time in a single season as well.

 249.
Edey finished his career at Purdue as one of only eight players ever in NCAA history to have at least 2,500 points and 1,300 rebounds and the first since 1987-1990 from La Salle’s Lionel Simmons. His 177 points scored in the 2024 NCAA Tourney are tied for second most during a tourney and his 87 rebounds was the eighth best mark. In doing so, Edey became the first player in NCAA Tourney history to have seven straight games of 20 points and 10 rebounds, leading the second best mark set by David Robinson by two games.

 250.
As the most prominent of all of these records, Edey also became the program’s all time leader in points scored (2,516) and total rebounds (1,321), passing the likes of all time legends in Rick Mount and Joe Barry Carroll. Edey has already had his name placed into the rafters as a two time consensus first team All American and two time National Player of the Year.

Seriously, you get a better sense of what he was able to accomplish by going through what Chris Forman put together there. Edey should be in the discussion for top 10 greatest college basketball players of all time, and I think he’d be closer to the top than you think.

 259.

 260.

 261.
The final tally of Zach Edey's career.

: https://t.co/72HJ8j5l3v pic.twitter.com/qd4lHFyuCe
— Purdue Men's Basketball (@BoilerBall) April 30, 2024

 264.
 265.

 266.
Braden Smith also broke some records as he became the single season B1G leader in assists with 292, breaking Michigan State’s Cassius Winston’s mark. His 292 assists are the eighth most by any player this century and the third most for a player in their first two seasons in NCAA history. Smith also ranks 10th in NCAA history in total assists in a players first two seasons with 447 behind players such as Jay Williams, Ja Morant, Jason Kidd, and T.J. Ford (among others).

 267.
The sophomore point guard also became just the second player in NCAA History with at least 450 points, 275 assists, and 200 rebounds in a single season joining BYU’s Kyle Collinsworth. When you drop the assist numbers down to 250, that includes only Magic Johnson as B1G players to ever reach those marks.

 268.

 269.

 273.
 274.

 275.
Lance Jones’ 80 made three pointers tied him for 12th place all time in program history while Mason Gillis’ 46.8% from behind the arc rank him fifth best in program history. Gillis’ career 3pt percentage of 40.7% place him seventh all time.

 276.

 277.
*Thanks to Chris Forman for putting together most of the statistics in this article. Forman continues to be one of the best communications directors in the NCAA.

 302.
 303.
 304.

 305.
The buzz around the program is at its highest since the 2012 Season, when the Doug Schreiber-led Boilermakers went a program-best, 45-14 and finished as the Big Ten Champions.

 306.
Now, led by Coach Greg Goff, in his 5th season, he has continued to build the program through recruiting and retaining players in West Lafayette.

 307.
The team is led by their big-hitting first baseman, Luke Gaffney. Gaffney, who is hitting .412 on the season, with 60 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .727, is only a redshirt freshman. He and smooth-hitting catcher, Connor Caskenette, a senior, have launched 12 home runs and added his own 60 RBIs to this year’s team.

 308.
Georgia transfer, Luke Wagner, has been one of the best pitchers on this loaded staff. While boasting an ERA of just over 5, Luke is 7-0 on the season in 11 appearances.

 309.
But, what matters now, is how the Boilermakers close the season. Today is the eve of the program's most important series in the last 10 years.

 310.
This weekend, Alexander Field will need everyone there as Purdue hosts our beloved Rivals, the Indiana Hoosiers, who have been the most consistent baseball team in the state for the past decade.

 313.
The Streak surged us into 1st Place

Now we ride the Momentum into the most significant series at Alexander since sweeping Michigan to end the 2018 regular season. #BoilerUp

Tickets vs IU: https://t.co/9RdAwcSWVB pic.twitter.com/CaK8ZskpjU
— Purdue Baseball (@PurdueBaseball) May 2, 2024

 317.

 318.
IU is only one game behind Purdue for the lead in the Big Ten Conference. Win two of three and the Boilermakers can stretch that lead to three. Drop two of three, and they will be tied with the Hoosiers, all while watching what Illinois does against Ohio State.

 319.
Purdue and Illinois are tied at the top of the Big Ten, with an 11-4 record. Indiana, Michigan, and Nebraska are all tied for 2nd with a 10-5 Big Ten Record.

 320.
The next three weekends are vital to Purdue’s NCAA Tournament hopes. After hosting IU this weekend, the Boilers will travel to Michigan, then close the season out at Alexander by hosting Illinois the following weekend.

 321.
The momentum from the Basketball season has carried over to the baseball program, and I have to say, this squad has been one of the most fun teams I have ever watched at Alexander Field.

 322.
Join the baseball team this weekend, a weekend in which they expect a record crowd at Alexander Field... just days after setting the record for attendance.
