202.

Palestinian community members discussed how the war in Gaza has impacted their lives in a community panel discussion Friday. University of Wisconsin professor of educational policy studies Nancy Kendall introduced the panel.

 203.
“Our goal in organizing this event is to provide a space where we can listen carefully and respectfully to a set of diverse and particular perspectives about the experience of being Palestinian,” Kendall said.

 204.
Educational events regarding the war should be organized to support community learning and engagement, Kendall said.

 205.
One panel speaker, who asked to be referred to as OA, shared a story from their childhood in Palestine. OA said they once came into contact with Israeli soldiers as a child.

 206.
“It was a day that was shiny, beautiful — I was trying to play and have fun with my friends, and all of a sudden, in a matter of seconds it transported me to something like a nightmare,” OA said.

 207.
OA added that they were in third grade during the Ibrahimi Mosque Massacre Feb. 25, 1994 in which an Israeli-American doctor from New York attacked hundreds of Palestinians while they prayed.

 208.
Due to this, OA said their village was shut down for months. Palestinians were essentially locked at home — only able to leave their homes for one hour a week in order to get groceries.

 209.
Another speaker said they grew up as a Palestinian refugee in Jordan. Their grandparents were forcefully expelled and taken hostage in 1948 by Israeli settlers.

 210.
“My grandpa spent two years in what he described as ‘literal hell,’” the speaker said. “His wife — my grandma — had no idea if he was alive or dead. She was by herself in a tent.”

 212.
Palestinians who are born as refugees often grapple with a confusing sense of identity, another speaker said.

 213.
“You’re born into exile,” the speaker said. “It’s a weird thing — Palestinians have no roots, we’re just floating around the world.”

 214.
The speaker said that after 30 years of attempting to return, one of their family members finally revisited Palestine. They discovered that their childhood home — which they constructed by hand — was now occupied by an Israeli family.

 215.
Palestinians encounter challenges through discrimination and prejudgments in every aspect of life, so they must work harder to succeed in a world that operates against them, one speaker said.

 216.
“It’s so scary to say you’re Palestinian, especially in the U.S., because the media paints a very specific crafted narrative about us,” the speaker said. “We we are still people — I don’t think you ever meet anyone who is more proud of where they are from than a Palestinian.”

 236.
The atmosphere at the Sir Owen G. Glenn National Aquatic Centre was charged with anticipation as Torepe-Ormsby, a 22-year-old athlete hailing from Christchurch, New Zealand, stepped up to the starting block for the heats of the 50m freestyle. In a display of sheer speed and determination, Torepe-Ormsby unleashed a blistering swim, clocking in at a staggering 21.86 seconds, securing the top seed in the process.

 237.
The significance of this achievement cannot be overstated. Torepe-Ormsby’s groundbreaking swim marked a watershed moment in New Zealand swimming history. His remarkable feat not only propelled him to the forefront of the national swimming scene but positioned him as a formidable contender on the international stage.

 238.
Michael Pickett and Cameron Gray, formidable competitors in their own right, clinched the 2nd and 3rd seeds respectively, with times of 22.19 and 22.34 seconds. But, it was Torepe-Ormsby who stole the spotlight with his unprecedented performance, leaving spectators and fellow athletes alike in awe of his extraordinary talent and determination.

 239.
“I’m lost for words to be honest, I’ve dreamed about this moment for my whole life,” Torepe-Ormsby told Newshub post-game.

 295.

According to this year’s County Health Rankings and Roadmaps’ National Findings Report, communities with well-resourced civic infrastructure and accessible information environments tend to have better health outcomes.

 296.
CHR&R is a University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute program that highlights the differences in health between and within communities. The program provides strategies and resources to support communities in implementing evidence-based solutions that address core structural health barriers.

 297.
In this year’s national report, CHR&R concentrated on civic health, which specifically focuses on the relationship between civic participation and health and considers the opportunities people have to participate in their communities. Civic health also involves civic infrastructures which are the structures that promote or prevent civic engagement.

 298.
Included in the report were three key findings. The counties with well-resourced civic spaces such as community centers, schools and parks demonstrate high community engagement in decision-making processes and social connections. Regions in the country that enforce structural barriers to civic health, such as restrictive voting laws, tend to lack the civic infrastructure and means to engage in issues affecting community health. These areas are often those with a history of structural racism and disinvestment. And areas with accessible information environments such as the internet and libraries offer more economic and social opportunities for positive health outcomes.

 325.
Wisconsin county health data reflects similar findings. The corridor of counties in Southern Wisconsin — Iowa, Dane, Jefferson, Columbia, Washington and Waukesha — are among those with the best health outcomes in the state. Counties with lower life expectancy and worse health outcomes include Milwaukee, Menominee and Forrest. UW community and environmental sociology assistant professor Malia Jones pointed out how the patterns refute common perceptions of rural versus urban health.

 326.
“If you look at Wisconsin, our most urban place, Milwaukee, and our most rural places are doing equally poorly compared to suburbs, and there are structural reasons for that,” Jones said.

 327.
Milwaukee has a history of being among the most segregated cities in the country, Jones said, noting that even to this day, the vast majority of people who are Black and Latino in Wisconsin live in Milwaukee County. It’s important to consider the extent to which Milwaukee County residents are civically engaged and represented in local and state governments.

 328.
The CHR&R Report provides evidence-based actions communities can take to enable people to participate, connect and stay informed about civic life. Recommendations center around youth civics education, public libraries, broadband initiatives to expand access to high-speed internet and participatory budgeting, which allows community members to determine public spending.

 329.
Jones said in addition to releasing a yearly county health ranking report, CHR&R provides a What Works for Health database which offers evidence-based strategies to help improve specific community health outcomes.

 349.

After watching teams poach the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team’s best players for the first month and change of portal action, head coach Greg Gard had a response Thursday — reeling in the former University of Missouri basketball player John Tonje.

 350.
He’s the third member of a quickly-assembled 2024 transfer class for Wisconsin, joining Camren Hunter and Xavier Amos as newcomers — each of whom have committed in the past four days.

 351.
Tonje’s pledge came as a shock to many, as he previously intended to play for the University of New Mexico this upcoming season. The Badgers had no reported connections to the grad transfer prior to his de-commitment from the Lobos.

 352.
Tonje only played in eight games (four starts) in 2023-24 — his only season with the Tigers — as his year was cut short due to an off-season foot injury he never healed from. He averaged 2.6 points in 9.8 minutes per contest.

 353.
While it’s unclear if the injury was the reason behind his limited role, he drew praise from Missouri head coach Dennis Gates over the summer and was primed to be a major contributor for the Tigers. Of course, that never came to fruition.

 380.
Instead, UW fans who wish to learn more about the grad transfer will have to fire up his 2022-23 tape. He spent his first four seasons with Colorado State, capping off his Rams career with a 33-start campaign, with averages of 14.6 points and 4.7 rebounds on 47/39/82 shooting splits.

 381.
He’s a solid defender who can attack off the dribble and is tough to stop once he gets downhill. With the Rams, he frequently ran off screens for drawn-up 3-point looks and excelled in spot-up shots.

 382.
Tonje can score at all three levels and has a deep bag when it comes to finishing moves. Though he shouldn’t be relied upon as a primary ball-handler, he’s comfortable with the ball in his hands and can consistently get to his spots.

 383.
At 6-foot-6, Tonje should fill some of the gaps left behind by guard AJ Storr’s departure. He’s a plus athlete with a strong offensive game. While he shouldn’t be expected to step into a role as prominent as Storr’s, Tonje’s basketball IQ, 3-point prowess and 215-pound frame will provide value for a Badger squad that was in desperate need for a two-way wing.

 384.
Entering his sixth season of collegiate hoops, Tonje becomes the eldest player on a Badger team that’s gotten significantly younger this offseason and should be an immediate impact player for Gard.

 385.
Following Tonje’s arrival, the Badgers will have filled 14 of the possible 15 roster spots for 2024-25. But, Gard and company have still been active in the portal in recent days, so Badger faithful shouldn’t rule out another transfer addition.

Per the website, volunteers will “spend their time answering questions and ensuring a positive market experience for all customers.” There are also opportunities for volunteers to interact with the market’s Electronic Benefit Transfer and Double Dollars programs, to make sure everyone is able to participate in the market. 493.
One song being sung by demonstrators is called “Sawf Nabqa Houna,” which translates to “We will stay here.” The demonstrators said they were inspired to sing the song in honor of the doctors working tirelessly to support those in Gaza.

 494.
Event organizers said they were also inspired by the dedicated journalists documenting the war in Gaza. Videos of doctors and journalists singing “Sawf Nabqa Houna” have been posted online.

 495.
“We’ve seen videos coming out of them singing this very song, which is very inspirational to see their resilience and so we wanted to bring that here,” one organizer said.

 507.
SJP UW–Madison and the Madison chapter of Jewish Voices for Peace hosted a Liberation Shabbat with over 100 people. During the service, Jewish participants recited prayers and sang in Hebrew, displaying solidarity with those in Gaza.

 508.
“Our [Jewish] tradition teaches us that while we were still enslaved, the first step toward our collective freedom was to demand that we will be allowed to rest on Shabbat,” the speaker said. “In that sense, every Shabbat is a gateway to liberation.”

 543.
Bottari emphasized the organization wants the protest to remain peaceful. Civil disobedience and peaceful protest are long-held traditions at UW, and an important part of its history, Bottari said.

 544.
“We think that these encampments are going to be on the right side of history and, eventually, UW will take pride in it in the same way they take pride in the Vietnam war protests,” Bottari said.

 548.
“It’s my honor to be here amongst you all today,” Sheikh Rami said. “These places are places of peace and love.”

 549.
Sheikh Rami called upon people from different religious backgrounds to speak out the war in Gaza. He added that students have a right to know where their university is invested, and how funding may be tied to genocide and other human rights violations.

 550.
UW administration should be proud of the students demonstrating and university leaders should meet with students ready to listen to their demands, Sheikh Rami said.

 551.
“One day we will look back at this moment and we will realize that the student movement that started from Columbia University and that has spread throughout the United States … will be looked upon as being on the right side of history as well,” Sheikh Rami said.

 578.
“We believe that today’s meeting ended productively, and that it makes sense for us to continue engaging with each other,” the statement said. “At this point, we have not made any commitments in relation to your concerns or demands, and you have not made any concessions.”

 600.
“We fully acknowledge the complexity of the issues in Israel and Gaza, which is at the heart of the demonstrations, and the suffering that the violence there has caused … The parties must continue their discussions with the aim of peacefully coming to a speedy resolution acceptable to all those involved, as difficult as that might be,” the statement, which was signed by all members of the University Committee, said.

 612.
“These actions are deeply damaging to the University of Wisconsin’s traditions of open inquiry, debate, and activism, and threaten the free speech rights of all members of the university community,” AAUP UW–Madison said in the statement.

 619.
Lead organizers gave an update from their second meeting with representatives from UW’s administration, including Provost Charles Isbell, Vice Provost John Zumbrunnen and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Lori Reesor. Mnookin was not present at the 8:30 a.m. meeting.

 620.
Professor of community and environmental sociology Samer Alatout, who is Palestinian, joined student negotiators at the meeting. Alatout has advocated for protesters throughout the week, but was among the faculty members arrested and injured during police presence Wednesday morning. Since Wednesday, Alatout has said he felt targeted as a Palestinian professor. This morning, he chose to withdraw from further negotiations until UW administrators issue an apology for detaining faculty of color and thereby perpetuating racist narratives.

 621.
The administrators offered to hold a longer negotiation meeting with lawyers present Saturday, but organizers said they feel they cannot negotiate until the UW Foundation discloses its investments. The UW Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation governed by UW alumni that fundraises on behalf of the university.

 622.
The administrators also offered to speak over the phone later today, which negotiators agreed to. The organizers again emphasized the demonstration will continue until their demands are met.

 623.
“What more urgency does she [Mnookin] need to look past her opinions and start fighting for Palestinian students and other students of color?” an organizer said.

 725.
Rep. Jake Wesner ran for vice chair. In his speech, Wesner highlighted his experience in budgeting and working with contractual agreements. Wesner also said he would ensure students have access to affordable public transportation.

 726.
The committee unanimously nominated Wesner for vice chair and Rep. Rishita Kilaru for secretary.

 727.
The committee appointed Aiden Culver as the Student Transportation Board Representative, Shomo as the Union Council Representative and Muaz Salem as the Healthcare Advisory Committee Representative.

 728.
Wesner nominated Saif Ahmed for Recreation and Wellbeing Board Representative, but Ahmed declined the nomination, so the SSFC will revisit the position’s election in the fall.

 729.
Lastly, SSFC approved a draft of their 2024-25 calendar. The committee voted to move their meeting time to Mondays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. rather than 6:30 p.m.

 730.
SSFC will resume meetings during the fall 2024 semester.

 754.

Runway of Dreams UW–Madison held its first fully independent Adaptive Runway Show — which highlights adaptive fashion for people with disabilities — Wednesday evening at UW Hillel on Langdon Street.

 755.
The club is a branch of the Runway of Dreams Foundation, which supports the movement for disability inclusion in the fashion and beauty industries, according to Foundation’s website.

 756.
Evening festivities began with UW Jewop A Capella, who sang “Easy to Love,” “Man or Muppet” and “Bei Mir.” At the conclusion of the Jewop performance, Runway of Dreams UW–Madison President Jenna Musoff played a brief documentary about Runway of Dreams while the models left the room to prepare for the runway.

 757.
Eight models walked the runway, modeling a wardrobe of custom-made clothes from Joe & Bella, Brakefields and Tommy Hilfiger. Adaptations included body shape specific tailoring, subtly placed zippers and magnetic buttons for ease of use, and special side-seam closures for ease of dressing.

 758.
People with disabilities are often forced to sacrifice style for comfort and ease of use, and, though the fashion industry has made strides in recent years, it still has a long way to go in addressing this problem, Musoff said.

 785.
Broadly, the Adaptive Runway Show helps highlight the demand for adaptive clothing, but it also has a local impact on people with disabilities in the community, Musoff said.

 786.
“It’s really about spreading awareness and how we are a fashion revolution and how anyone can wear these clothes and feel special. We want everyone to feel like they can have something that they can wear and feel confident in,” Musoff said.

 787.
With adaptations that are nearly undetectable from the exterior the outfits at this year’s Adaptive Runway show did just that, Musoff said.

 788.
Last year, Runway of Dreams UW–Madison partnered with The Issue, a campus fashion magazine, to host an adaptive show, but this year marked the first time that the club has been able to organize and carry out the event independently, according to Musoff.

 789.
Musoff reached out to several UW disability affiliated organizations to find models for the show including Best Buddies, Adaptive Fitness and Badgers for Special Olympics. Demand for modeling was high and Musoff said that she regretfully had to turn down several potential models who expressed interest after clothing orders had already been made.

 790.
In preparation for the event, models’ measurements were distributed by the Runway of Dreams Foundation to adaptive clothing companies Joe & Bella and Brakefields for tailoring to the models’ fits and adaptive needs, according to Musoff. Shoe retailer Zappos also donated 10 pairs of shoes for the event, Musoff said. The rest of the clothes were provided by donations raised through the club.

 791.
After the show, model Chrispy Black, who accented his adaptive olive trousers and black polo with wide Lennon shades — in self-described dance club style — said that he hoped these runway shows would happen more often in the future.

 792.
“I think it went pretty well,” Black said. “I’ve been to a lot of different fashion shows. This one is really neat. I hope they do it more often,” Black said.
