20.
National outlets think quarterback will be on the menu again next year

While draft analysts like Mel Kiper Jr. get shoved back into their dusty closets this time of year, I don’t have that luxury.

 21.
Outlets around the sports media landscape have released Way-Too-Early 2025 mock drafts, and they obviously involve the New York Giants. Considering we’re still close to the 2024 draft and I’ve had plenty of exposure to many of these players, Ed asked me for my thoughts on next year’s quarterback class.

 22.
Looking ahead, pretty much every national outlet is projecting that the Giants will be drafting in the top 10 again in 2025. In fact, the Giants are projected to be drafting no later than sixth across the various outlets.

 43.

 44.
Obviously, nobody knows how the Giants will fare in 2024, but the early prognosticators aren’t optimistic. There’s also a definite trend in the player(s) mocked to the Giants.

 45.
Prior to the draft, Vegas oddsmakers projected the Giants to have the 13th toughest schedule. With teams like the Washington Commanders, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Minnesota Vikings each potentially improving, that could shift more.

 46.
The NFC East could look more like the NFC Beast again if Washington rediscovers competency and the Eagles were able to effectively reload after their late-season collapse. The AFC North is never easy, and could be tougher if either of Pittsburgh’s newly-acquired quarterbacks hit. Some projections now believe the Giants are looking at the sixth-hardest schedule.

 47.
The various outlets are also almost certainly operating on the assumption that this year is Daniel Jones’ last with the Giants. They’re probably looking at Jone’s injury history, his level of play prior to his injury, and the off-ramp built into his contract.

 48.
With such a focus already on the future of the Giants’ quarterback position, we thought it might be a good idea to take a very early look at the players who might be available.

 49.

2025 quarterbacks

 50.
Shedeur Sanders (Colorado)

 51.
Sanders is one of the early frontrunners to be the first quarterback picked in the 2025 draft, and could be a bit of an involved evaluation. He’s an athletic quarterback with the ability to scramble and extend plays, though he doesn’t have the open-field speed you’d assume based on his frame.

 52.
Sanders has a solid arm as a passer with a (very) slightly elongated delivery, but is able to accelerate his motion to beat coverage. He’s able to generate power from the ground up or make pure “arm” throws when he’s on the move. Either way, Sanders typically delivers a catchable ball with good placement as well as general accuracy. He’s able to drive the ball as well as throw with touch and layer the ball between defenders.

 53.
He generally processes well and visibly works through extended progression reads and knows when to find his check-down option. Sanders is something of a “see-it, throw-it” quarterback who doesn’t throw with anticipation and can be prone to holding the ball when his pre and post-snap reads don’t align.

 54.
The big question — at least for a conservative organization like the Giants — is how much “Coach Prime” comes with Shedeur Sanders. The Giants are adverse to circuses, and Shedeur may have inherited his father’s gift of gab. Even excepting social media chatter, the Giants may opt to steer well clear of Deion Sanders and the larger-than-life personality

 55.
[Game tape]

 56.
Carson Beck (Georgia)

 57.
As you may be able to tell from the way-too-early mock drafts, Beck is the other frontrunner to be the first quarterback chosen in next year’s draft.

 58.
Beck is listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, but listed size and weight may not hold true for the official measurements at the Combine. Regardless of whether his listed size and weight match his true measurements, he has good size on tape. He’s an adequate athlete with quick feet and enough athleticism to execute bootlegs, scramble, or pick up yards on his own if the opportunity arises. That said, nobody will confuse Beck with a truly athletic “dual threat” quarterback.

 59.
Likewise, Beck has an adequate arm. He has enough arm strength to reach down the field, but doesn’t really drive the ball. He is able to alter his trajectory and layer the ball, and has enough strength to complete most passes he’ll be asked to execute at the NFL level. Beck is the type of quarterback who’s generally accurate, but not particularly precise. He’s able to put the ball on-target, however his receivers often have to make significant adjustments (slow down, leap, or otherwise contort) to haul in the pass.

 60.
[Game tape]

 61.
Quinn Ewers (Texas)

 62.
Ewers was one of the top prospects in his recruiting class, generally considered the No. 1 or No. 2 quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class alongside Caleb Williams. Ewers started his college career at Ohio State but transferred to Texas after one season. He was also widely expected to be the Longhorns’ backup after Arch Manning committed to Texas, but has managed to hold off the youngest Manning.

 63.
Ewers has unspectacular size and is listed at at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds. That isn’t going to get scouts excited, but it’s similar to many NFL passers. He has light and active feet in his drops, and doesn’t shuffle or settle. Ewers is a pretty good athlete for a player who wasn’t considered a “dual threat” as a recruit and is able to hurt defenses with his legs.

 64.
He also has a pretty good arm to go with his athleticism. Ewers has good arm elasticity, allowing him to alter his arm angle and throw round defenders that leak into the backfield. He also has enough arm strength to reach down the field when he isn’t able to set his feet or get enough air under the ball that it drops down the chimney and into receivers’ hands.

 65.
Beck typically places his passes well and doesn’t make his receivers adjust unnecessarily. He has a surprisingly good feel for pacing his passes and seems to try to make his passes as catchable as possible — similar to a golfer trying to get their putts to melt into the cup. That can get him into trouble when he challenges tight windows with touch instead of trusting his receiver to catch a fastball.

 66.
[Game tape]

 67.
Jalen Milroe (Alabama)

 68.
Alabama’s quarterback is going to be a fascinating case study this year. He seemingly improved by the drive over the course of the season. Milroe seemed like a completely different player in the Rose Bowl as compared to the beginning of the year.

 69.
He’s well-respected around the Alabama program and was named a permanent team captain this year.

 70.
Milroe sports a dense frame, listed at 6-foot-2, 220 pounds, and combines a strong arm with good athleticism. He is a true “dual threat” who was a factor in Alabama’s running game as well as their passing attack. Milroe has some undeniable similarities with former Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Hurts. He’s athletic enough to execute read-option plays or designed QB runs, and also has a strong enough arm to attack the intermediate area of the field with velocity when on the move.

 71.
Like most of these quarterbacks, Milroe is still young and developing the mental side of his game. He can be slow to recognize pressure or coverage rotations, and needs to improve his eye discipline as well.

 72.
Perhaps the biggest test will be how Milroe adapts to a new system under new head coach Kalen DeBoer. DeBoer succeeded Nick Saban after the latter retired, coming over from the Washington Huskies. Milroe has the chance to rocket up draft boards if he performs well in a similar offense as the one run by Michael Penix Jr.

 73.
[Game tape]

 74.
Brady Cook (Missouri)

 75.
Cook doesn’t seem to be on the national radar as he’s ranked 668th on the 2025 Consensus Big Board.

 76.
However, of all the young quarterbacks in the country, he’s the one who intrigued me the most while studying the 2024 draft class. He probably won’t stay hidden for long, as Cook will almost certainly get eyes on him as the guy throwing to wide receiver Luthor Burden III, who’s already on watchlists as a first-round prospect for next year.

 77.
Cook is a senior who’s started the last two seasons for the Tigers, and appears to have more polish than his contemporaries. He certainly seems to understand the importance of eye discipline and even uses his body language to look off defenders on designed quarterback runs. Speaking of which, he lacks great size (listed at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds), but is a surprisingly twitchy athlete who can escape defenders and break angles as a ball carrier.

 78.
He has a tight, compact, and quick release that lets him beat pressure, challenge quickly closing windows. That holds true on the move and he’s able to reach deep down the field and deliver the deep ball to his receivers in-stride off play-action.

 79.
[Game tape]

 120.
New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton is "confident" there will be a resolution to his contract situation as he continues to stay away from the team's voluntary offseason workouts. Slayton spoke on Wednesday night for the first time on the subject before being honored for his work in the community at the annual Gridiron Gala, which supports the United Way of New York City.

 196.
 197.
One Dallas writer thinks Giants top the list of likely destinations if Prescott leaves Dallas

Right now, it’s anybody’s guess who the quarterback of the New York Giants will be in 2025. FOX Sports Dallas Cowboys insider David Helman thinks it could be Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott, who can be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season.

 198.

 199.
The Giants top this list for multiple reasons. They are a logical landing spot — but also a fun storyline. Prescott’s no-tag clause means he can do as he pleases if he hits the open market, including signing with a division rival that’s desperate for good quarterback play.

 200.
Yes, Daniel Jones is still in New York, with young journeyman Drew Lock as an option behind him. But it sure seems like the Giants are setting themselves up for a transition after this season. Lock is on a one-year deal, and the guarantees run out on Jones’ $160 million extension after this season.

 201.
If Jones doesn’t improve by a significant margin, the Giants could release him in 2025 and save $19 million toward the salary cap. That, combined with a handful of contract restructures, would give them all the money needed to pursue Prescott. We’ve seen them do it as recently as this spring, when they inked Brian Burns to a $141 million extension after trading to acquire him from Carolina.

 202.
Fortunately for Prescott, the situation in North Jersey might look a heck of a lot better in 2025 than it has in recent years. The Giants spent this spring adding reinforcements to their offensive line, and No. 6 overall draft pick Malik Nabers gives them a true No. 1 receiver for the first time since Odell Beckham Jr. left town. Signing Prescott and solving the quarterback issue in March would allow general manager Joe Schoen to focus on drafting even more weapons next April.

 203.
The Giants should have a healthy appreciation for Prescott’s ability. After all, they haven’t beaten him since his rookie season, posting a dismal 2-12 record against the Cowboys with him in the lineup.

 204.
It’s strange to think about Prescott wearing blue and red, but there are about a half-dozen reasons why it wouldn’t be surprising.

 205.

 206.
Personally, I have a hard time wrapping my head around that one. Perhaps partially because of the Dallas thing. Perhaps partially because it feels like — without having done an in-depth study — signings like that don’t give the desired result often enough.

 207.
How would you feel about this, Giants fans?

 219.
Giants UDFAs: Get to know John Jiles, WR, West Florida

 225.

 226.
 227.
Could Jiles compete for a roster spot?

John Jiles is one of those college players who has had a winding path that did not have him high on the radars of NFL teams. He will, though, get an NFL opportunity. Jiles, 6-foot-2, 219 pounds, is one of the players reportedly signed by the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent.

 228.
Here is what a variety of scouting reports say about him:

 229.
Dane Brugler:

 230.

A three-star safety recruit out of high school, he committed to Marshall but didn’t qualify academically. He moved to receiver full-time and played two seasons at the juco level. He had FBS offers, but academics were again an issue. He flirted with the CFL, too, but the pandemic threw off those plans. So, Jiles signed with Division II Virginia Union and sat out the 2021 season to get his grades in order. After a productive 2022, he transferred to West Florida for his final year. Although he doesn’t create a ton of space, Jiles does a great job with his size and body positioning to create workable windows and pull in erratic throws with his wide net. Overall, Jiles is rough around the edges as a route runner, but he looks like the Division II version of Drake London on tape with his height/weight/speed and ball skills. There is talent here worth developing.

 231.
Emory Hunt (Football Gameplan draft guide):

 232.

 233.
Strengths:

 234.
- Tremendous athlete and athleticism; very Stacey Augmon like in that regard. Excellent leaping ability and can win above the rim more often than not.
- Confident and arrogant hands. Really trusts his mitts and his wingspan to make the grab. Will be a QB’s most trusted option in a tough situation.
- Footwork is where you’d like it. Able to get a very good release off the LOS and shows he can stack and track the ball deep downfield.

 235.
Areas of Improvement:

 236.
- The foot release is fine, but has to be stronger with his hands in terms of getting off press coverage quicker. Also at the top of his route, using his hands to free himself from a defender is another area for growth.
- Top end speed is a question, as he’ll struggle to consistently separate from defensive backs.

 237.

 238.
The Giants saw Jiles first-hand at the College Gridiron Showcase, where they had multiple scouts in attendance.

 239.
Lance Zierlein of NFL.com thinks Jiles has a chance to stick on the bottom of an NFL roster or a practice squad. He wrote:

 240.

Jiles has arms like vines and showed off his ridiculous catch radius on more than one occasion during his college career. Despite playing against smaller foes, he has a lighter win rate on contested catches than he should, as he fails to bully and wall off opponents at the catch point. He’s a sloppy route-runner and lacks NFL long speed. Jiles will need to become more aggressive and consistently competitive to prove he can win possession catches and rise to the challenge of much stiffer competition.

 241.
The Athletic lists Jiles as the UDFA with the best chance to make the Giants’ roster. Jiles caught 66 passes for 1,255 yards (19.0 yards per catch) and 16 touchdowns last season. He figures to compete with players like Bryce Ford-Wheaton, Chase Cota, Miles Boykin and Dennis Houston for an opportunity to at least be part of the practice squad. Best-case, he sneaks on to the 53-man roster as a sixth or seventh wide receiver.

 253.
Where would you have drafted an offensive lineman for the New York Giants?

 259.

 260.
 261.
So, dear readers, tell us which player you would have passed on and which offensive lineman you would have selected

In the wake of the 2024 NFL Draft, a question about what the New York Giants did — or more precisely, didn’t do — keeps coming up.

 262.
“Why didn’t the Giants draft any offensive linemen?”

 263.
After all, the Giants surrendered an atrocious, league-worst, 85 sacks last season. That’s almost the exact number they gave up over the 2021 and 2022 seasons, when no one thought they had a good offensive line to begin with.

 264.
So, why didn’t GM Joe Schoen prioritize the offensive line in the draft?

 265.
Let me flip that question on its head.

 266.
With the six picks the Giants had, where would you have selected an offensive lineman? Which player, or players, Schoen selected would you have been willing to pass on for an offensive lineman?

 267.
Let’s go round-by-round.

 268.
Round 1

 269.
The Giants chose LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers at No. 6. I am not buying the chatter that they would have traded up for Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt, or even would have selected Alt at No. 6.

 270.
There were three other offensive linemen selected in the top half of Round 1 — tackle J.C. Latham of Alabama, tackle Olu Fashanu of Penn State, tackle Taliese Fuaga of Oregon State.

 271.
Would you have chosen one of those players over Nabers, Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze, or even Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy? In the poll below, I will offer you a choice between Nabers and the three offensive linemen.

 272.

 273.
Round 2

 274.
The Giants chose safety Tyler Nubin. The need was obvious, with the selection perhaps only surprising because it doesn’t necessarily fit the positional value portrait we have of how Schoen generally does business.

 275.
Below, are the offensive tackles chosen between picks 47 and 70, when the Giants chose in Round 3.

 276.

 277.
Round 3

 278.
The Giants chose cornerback Andru Phillips at No. 70. Cornerback was an obvious need, with the only reservation about this pick being that Phillips seems more like a slot cornerback than the outside cornerback the Giants seem to need.

 279.
Below, some of the offensive line options the Giants had at this spot.

 280.

 281.
Round 4

 282.
The Giants took tight end Theo Johnson at No. 107, filling a need for a versatile, pass-catching tight end with Darren Waller likely to retire.

 283.
Below, some of the offensive linemen who could have been selected before the Giants’ next pick at No. 166.

 284.

 285.
Round 5

 286.
The Giants selected running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. at pick No. 166, a choice that has been widely praised.

 287.
Below, some of the offensive line options available.

 288.

 289.
Round 6

 290.
The Giants selected linebacker Darius Muasau with their final pick. That was a bit of a surprise considering no offensive or defensive linemen had been taken by the Giants to that point.

 291.
Below, some of the drafted linemen the Giants passed on.

 292.

 293.
Final thoughts

 294.
Yes, I was surprised the Giants did not add to the offensive line in the draft. I mocked Christian Mahogany to the Giants a number of times, and probably would have taken him in Round 6. Then again, I knew nothing about Darius Muasau and those who have studied him post-draft have been impressed. The Giants also had C.J. Hanson of Holy Cross in for a visit during their local Pro Day.

 295.
The other apparent sweet spot, to me, looks in might have been in Rounds 3 or 4. Would you have give up Andru Phillips or Theo Johnson for offensive line help?

 313.

 314.
 315.
Draft analysts generally approve of the team’s 2024 draft class

Grades, grades, grades. In the days following the NFL Draft everyone wants to post grades, judging the work of general managers before players have even had a chance to get on an NFL practice field.

 316.
We have been giving you some of the grades for the New York Giants. We have even given you the opportunity to vote in polls to offer your own pick-by-pick grades.

 317.
Hey, everyone has an opinion, right? But, what is the consensus?

 318.
Well, the chart below, compiled by René Bugner (@RNBWCV) gives us an idea. The 28 grades compiled in Bugner’s chart lead to a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.04. That would be a ‘B’, trending toward a ‘B+’. Of the 32 NFL teams, that is the 14th-highest GPA.

 319.

 320.
 321.

 322.
Only one grader has the Giants in the ‘C’ range, with Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated giving GM Joe Schoen’s 2024 draft class a C+. Everyone else has grades of B- or better.

 323.
Now, we know that the Giants’ draft class has to be measured against the quarterback decision they made — or didn’t make. And, we know that these snap grades are mostly meaningless.

 324.
Still, this provides a nice 30,000-foot view of how analysts believe the Giants did in the draft.

 343.

 344.
 345.
A little praise for some of Joe Schoen’s work

ESPN’s Matt Miller ranked three New York Giants’ selections as three of his top-100 best picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. Half of the Giants draft made Miller’s list. Four Cowboys and Commanders made the list, and two Eagles made the list - all three of those teams had more selections than the Giants. Here are the three players.

 346.
Malik Nabers

 347.
Miller ranked Malik Nabers as his 11th-favorite selection of the 2024 NFL Draft, and Nabers was Miller’s fourth overall player in the draft. Here’s Miller’s reasoning:

 348.

Some will knock the Giants for not drafting a quarterback or offensive tackle at No. 6 overall, but both positions would have been reaches on my board. Instead, the Giants selected my No. 4 overall player in Nabers, who should be the team’s WR1 from the jump. With the explosive receiver on board, the team can fully evaluate Daniel Jones and Drew Lock at quarterback before potentially making a change at the position in the 2025 draft/offseason.

 349.
The rationale is reasonable. Yes, Nabers will give Jones or Lock the much-needed explosive weapon to evaluate them as quarterbacks properly. Still, the Giants were in the quarterback market in this draft and missed out on an opportunity to get their guy by three picks. Nabers helps the current quarterbacks on the roster, but there’s still long-term uncertainty at the position. As for the selection of Nabers in a vacuum, he’s an excellent player who will immediately be an impact player for the Giants. Check out our breakdown on Malik Nabers here!

 350.
Theo Johnson

 351.
Miller ranked Theo Johnson as the 72nd-best selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, and Johnson was Miller’s 69th overall player in the draft. Here’s Miller’s reasoning:

 352.

It was very wise of the Giants to grab more options at tight end, and Johnson had flashes on tape throughout his career that would make you think he’s a future NFL starter. If the Giants can coach him up, he could be a steal. He caught seven touchdowns last season.

 353.
If the uncertainty surrounding Darren Waller didn’t exist, the selection of Theo Johnson would still be warranted. Before the Johnson selection, Daniel Bellinger was the only tight end on the roster under contract after the 2024 season. To Miller’s point, Johnson has a future NFL starter upside, with a rare combination of size, athletic ability, and natural receiving skills. Check out our breakdown on Theo Johnson here.

 354.
Tyler Nubin

 355.
Miller ranked Tyler Nubin as the 78th-best selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, and Nubin was Miller’s 56th overall player in the draft. Here’s Miller’s reasoning:

 356.

When starter Xavier McKinney left in free agency for the Packers, it was obvious the Giants would target a safety at some point in the draft. Nubin has All-American ball skills (13 career picks) and proved during his college career that he can read the eyes of quarterbacks and then use his range to attack the ball. He’s a classic center-fielder free safety who should top the team’s depth chart in Week 1.

 357.
GM Joe Schoen seconded Miller’s primary point above - Nubin creates turnovers. His 13 career interceptions set a Golden Gophers record. He’s smart, tough, and dependable, and a very good asset to replace the loss of McKinney. Here is our Tyler Nubin breakdown.

Tracy is 24 years old and has six college football seasons under his belt. He was initially a wide receiver at Iowa and transferred to the Boilermakers before the 2022 season.

 378.
Upon the start of the 2023 season, the Purdue coaching staff asked Tracy to switch to running back. He accepted the challenge and averaged 4.44 yards after contact, which ranked first among draft-eligible FBS running backs.

 380.
Tracy rushed for 716 yards on just 113 carries (6.3 YPC) in 2023, with eight rushing touchdowns. He caught 19 passes for 132 yards and also added a 98-yard kick return touchdown against Fresno State.

 381.
He only had more than 500 receiving yards in one season as a wide receiver; 2021 was that year, but the Iowa offense was ineffective for his entire tenure as a Hawkeye. Eric Gray and Gary Brightwell will compete for snaps against Tracy.
