19.
Hello Everyone,

 20.
It feels like it's been forever since it was announced that Vox would no longer be supporting Five For Howling and other hockey sites on SBNation, even if it has only been a few months. In that time, we have continued to provide game day previews and started posting more articles on the weekend, all while preparing for the move.

 21.
And that move is happening. This will be the last post on the Five For Howling that was, with future posts being on the new site through Ghost, which can be found here. If you go there tomorrow morning, you will see the game preview for the Coyotes' game against the Dallas Stars and all future contact.

 22.
We are thankfully able to keep the domain, so in the coming days/weeks/however long the process takes, you will be able to go to FiveForHowling.com, and it will automatically redirect you, but until then, check out our Ghost page.

 43.
 44.
Mullett Arena hosted a truly fantastic Isobel Cup championship game.

Yesterday evening, championship hockey came to the desert. At Mullett Arena, after the Arizona Coyotes fell to the Colorado Avalanche in the shootout, the Toronto Six faced off against the Minnesota Whitecaps for the Isobel Cup, the top prize of the Premier Hockey Federation.

 45.
Before the event, fans had the chance to see a star-studded panel hosted by Erica Ayala. Lyndsey Fry (Silver Medal Olympian and Coyotes’ broadcaster), Natasha Adair (Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Arizona State University), Madison Packer (captain of the Metropolitan Riveters), and Kacey Bellamy (Isobel Cup and Clarkson Cup winner) spoke in front of a gathered crowd about topics ranging from preparing for a competition that is four years away to what it means to be involved with programs that they never had growing up as athletes. Present were girls from the Arizona Kachina hockey program and ASU Women’s basketball team who got advice from the athletes that they can use for the rest of their lives in sports and beyond.

 46.
After the panel wrapped up, fans headed inside to see the top teams of the PHF face off. It was a high-speed matchup, with the Toronto Six drawing first blood seven and a half minutes in with a goal from Dominika Lásková with Michela Cava and Leah Lum assisting.

 47.

 51.
 52.

 53.
Cava picked up the puck on the wall and went hard to the net, only to pass it across to a streaking Lásková to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. Lásková was sent to the box for tripping nine seconds later, but the Six killed the penalty and maintained their lead as the opening frame drew to a close.

 54.
The second period would feature most of the offense, starting with the Whitecaps tying the game just over four minutes in. Brittyn Fleming picked up a bouncing puck behind the Six’s net and beat goaltender Elaine Chul tying the game at 1-1.

 55.

 60.

 61.
But the Six didn’t wait long to regain the lead. Six and a half minutes later, Whitecaps goaltender Amanda Leveille went behind the net to play the puck, but a miscommunication led to streaking Emma Woods getting it instead. The Toronto forward passed the puck up to Breanne Wilson-Bennett, who converted on the Whitecaps’ mistake to make it 2-1.

 67.

 68.
“You see those kind of plays in these high-pressure games where those are the mistakes and the teams that capitalize are going to be ones that come out on top.” said Whitecaps defender Amanda Boulier said after the game “That was a tough one, but I really liked the way we kept coming back.”

 69.
Minnesota tied things up a second time before the end of the middle frame with a goal from Brooke Madsen. The Whitecaps were in on a 3-on-1, and Natalie Snodgrass passed the puck to Madsen, who fired it from the faceoff dot to tie the game two all.

 70.

 75.

 76.
The game started to get more physical as time began to tick away, and it was clear that the refs would let the women play. After two calls in the first period, the Six got the final penalty of the game late in the second, a bench minor for delay of game at 18:29.

 77.
The Whitecaps didn’t score before the end of the second, but it didn’t take long for them to get their first lead. With seconds remaining on the power play, Natalie Snodgrass took the puck to the goal line and found Jonna Albers, who redirected the puck past Chuli to make it 3-2 Minnesota.

 78.

 82.
 83.

 84.
fter coming back from deficits twice, the Whitecaps had their first lead of the game. But it was still early, and it didn’t take long for the Six to tie things up again just under eight minutes into the final frame with a goal from Taylor Woods.

 85.

 86.

 89.
 90.

 91.
Michela Cava stole the puck in the Whitecaps’ zone and backhanded a shot toward the net. Amanda Leveille made the initial save but couldn’t freeze the puck, allowing Woods to guide it into the net, tying the game for the final time.

 92.
With the game tied 3-3, regulation ended, and fans were lucky enough to get some free hockey. Speed had been a factor all game, and fans waited in anticipation to see what would happen with the open ice that 3-on-3 provides.

 93.
It didn’t take long for the Six to take over, and outside of a few good looks from the Whitecaps, overtime was all Toronto.

 94.
“We won one of the games against Connecticut in overtime as well, so we thought it could go into overtime,” Six head coach Geraldine Heaney said after the game. “We practiced it last week, we practiced it when we got here as well.”

 95.
That practice paid off. Not only did the Six outplay the Whitecaps, but they also got the game-winner four and a half minutes in. Forward Tereza Vanišová forced Liz Schepers to turnover the puck in the Whitecap’s zone and roofed a shot over Leveille to give the Six their first win.

 96.

 102.
“This has been three years in the making,” said Toronto captain Shiann Darkangelo after the game. “I’m super excited and proud of the group that’s been here and the girls that have been a part of this to be able to bring the Isobel Cup back to Toronto. We’re just going to try enjoy it here in Arizona with our friends and family that are here and then hopefully, we can do things with the community and the fans back home.”

 122.
 123.
The Arizona Coyotes will play the Edmonton Oilers for the final time this season.

Game Preview

 124.
The Arizona Coyotes will play the Edmonton Oilers for the second time in two weeks, and for the second time, it will be the second game of a back-to-back. But it will be at the Mullett Arena this time, where the Coyotes have played better this season.

 125.
After falling 3-1 to the Colorado Avalanche last Friday, the Coyotes returned home to host the Avalanche yesterday. They kept the game much tighter but still lost 4-3 to the Avalanche in the shootout.

 126.
The Coyotes needed to come back twice, which isn’t surprising when facing one of the top teams. They were down 2-0 going into the final frame, only to tie things up midway through the period with goals from Matias Maccelli and Christian Fischer. Then, when the Avalanche regained the lead on the power play, Clayton Keller scored his 36th goal and 80th point to tie things up and force overtime.

 127.
If the Coyotes had a more potent power play, the game might not have had to go to the shootout. The Coyotes had three power play opportunities, including two in the first period when the game was scoreless and one right after the Avalanche scored their second goal. But they failed to convert on any of them, like so many times this season.

 128.
The Edmonton Oilers have played only one game since they beat the Coyotes in overtime, a 4-3 overtime loss to the Vegas Golden Knights last Saturday. Tonight will be the first game of a back-to-back for them, and they will face the Golden Knights again tomorrow.

 129.
The Oilers kept things tight against Golden Knights, although they didn’t have the lead once. They tied things up three times before the Golden Knights got a two-goal lead, but the Golden Knights kept scoring first and won in overtime.

 130.
Vegas and Edmonton were evenly matched on special teams, with both teams going one for two on the man advantage. Unfortunately, this likely won’t be the case for tonight’s matchup. The Oilers have the better power play and penalty kill, so the Desert Dogs should avoid giving them any unnecessary advantages.

 131.
If the Coyotes want to walk away with the win, they need to strike first and keep the Oilers on their back foot. If the Coyotes can play to the crowd and get some of that Mullett Magic working, they can get an early lead and force the Oilers to play their game. The Coyotes don’t play again until this Friday, while the Oilers are playing tomorrow, and they may decide it’s better to conserve their energy if the game slips out of hand early on.

 132.
Players to Watch

 133.
Arizona: Matias Maccelli - Maccelli scored his eighth goal of the season last night, giving him 41 points in 56 games as a rookie. He registered an assist the last time the Oilers and Coyotes played.

 134.
Edmonton: Leon Draisaitl - Draisaitl had a goal and an assist in his last game and four assists the last time the Coyotes and Oilers played. He comes into tonight’s game riding an eight-game point streak.

 135.
Injuries

 136.
Arizona: Josh Brown (probable, undisclosed), Laurent Dauphin (questionable, undisclosed), Zack Kassian (questionable, upper body), Jakub Voráček (concussion), Shea Weber (ankle), Bryan Little (ear), Andrew Ladd (knee)

 137.
Edmonton: Ryan McLeod (upper body), Ryan Murray (back)

 138.
Puck Drop

 139.
Tonight’s game will be at 7:00 pm Arizona time and will air on TVAS, Bally Sports Arizona, and on ESPN 620AM.

 159.
The Avalanche and Coyotes meet again, this time in Arizona.

Game Preview

 160.
The Arizona Coyotes will match up against the Colorado Avalanche for the second time in a row. The two teams met last Friday in Denver, where the Avalanche beat the Coyotes 3-1, and they meet today in a matinee matchup.

 161.
Arizona started their last game strong and played a solid first half. The Avalanche had the first goal, but the Coyotes tied things up late in the period, with Clayton Keller getting his 35th goal of the season.

 162.
Unfortunately, things started to slow down midway through the second period. At one point, the Coyotes were outshooting the Avalanche but couldn’t capitalize. Then, by the end of the middle frame, the Avalanche were outshooting the Desert Dogs 21-14.

 163.
Special teams proved to be the deciding factor in the last match between these two teams. The Avalanche scored two power play goals, starting the scoring with a Nathan MacKinnon goal midway through the first period and getting their third goal from J.T. Compher.

 164.
The fact that the Avalanche could score on two of their power play brings up another problem, the Coyotes took too many penalties. The Yotes were short-handed three times throughout the game but only had one power play opportunity.

 165.
But Mullett Magic is always possible when the Coyotes are at home, and this afternoon will hopefully be no different. If the Coyotes can get a solid start and ride the crowd’s energy, they may grab the win.

 166.
Despite facing a formidable opponent, today is the perfect opportunity for younger players to show what they can do. Nathan Smith played in his first NHL game of the season, while Miloš Kelemen and Michael Kesselring also played. Unfortunately, Keller, Nick Schmaltz, and J.J. Moser were the only players to register points, but you can bet other players are looking to make their mark.

 167.
Players to Watch

 168.
Arizona: Clayton Keller - Keller set a new career high in goals scored on Friday and comes into this afternoon’s game riding an 11-game point streak. He has nine games left but is on pace to set a new record for the most points scored by a Coyotes player in a single season.

 169.
Colorado: Cale Makar - Makar was involved in all three of the Avalanche’s goals on Friday, scoring his own goal and registering two assists. He comes into today’s game with three three-point games in his last five.

 170.
Injuries

 171.
Arizona: Laurent Dauphin (questionable, undisclosed), Zack Kassian (questionable, upper body), Josh Brown (undisclosed), Jakub Voráček (concussion), Shea Weber (ankle), Bryan Little (ear), Andrew Ladd (knee)

 172.
Colorado: Evan Rodrigues (probable, concussion), Artturi Lehkonen (finger), Josh Manson (lower body), Pavel Francouz (lower body), Gabriel Landeskog (knee)

 173.
Puck Drop

 174.
Today’s game will be at noon Arizona time and will air on the NHL Network, Bally Sports Arizona, and ESPN 620AM.

 192.

 193.
 194.
The Arizona Coyotes are one of the most penalized teams in the NHL.

A surprising number of things have gone right for the Arizona Coyotes this season. Clayton Keller is having a monster season, rookies like Matias Maccelli and Juuso Välimäki are stepping up quicker than expected, and they have been playing phenomenally well at home. But, unfortunately, the Coyotes still have problems, and one consistent issue has been their penchant for taking penalties.

 195.
The Coyotes are the sixth most penalized team in the NHL, with 800 penalty minutes taken over 73 games. For reference, the Montréal Canadiens are the most penalized team, with 856 penalties over 72 games.

 196.
But the Coyotes are number one in other areas related to penalties. They are the worst team at net penalties (penalties drawn versus penalties taken) with a -69, which is not nice, and they have taken the most bench minors with 17.

 197.
Also, according to More Hockey Stats, they have taken the most too many men on the ice penalties in the league, with 15. That means that once every five games, the Coyotes will be assessed a bench minor for too many men, leaving their team short-handed.

 198.
The Coyotes are short-handed far too much and currently lead the league in short-handed time on ice per games played, averaging 6:12 short-handed each game. Not surprisingly, this has seen them give up a lot of goals, and the Coyotes lead the league in power play goals against with 67.

 199.
The numbers don’t tell you that the Coyotes are also taking penalties at the worst times.

 200.
Last night, Victor Söderström was sent to the box for tripping with a minute and 31 seconds left in regulation, killing any shot at a comeback to tie the game. Against the Edmonton Oilers, a late call against Välimäki led to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tying the game before the end of the second period, and a late third-period call against Connor Mackey made it harder for the Coyotes to retake the lead before the end of regulation.

 201.
With a widespread issue like this, it is clear that it is not just one player who is the problem. Liam O’Brien is the Coyotes’ most-penalized player, but he is tied for 22nd in penalty minutes with 74. The Lightning’s Pat Maroon is the most penalized player and has 119 penalty minutes.

 202.
The Coyotes’ lack of skill and young roster are likely contributing factors. If you can’t keep up or get caught doing something that would have worked at a lower level, you take a penalty to prevent the other team from scoring and getting further behind. This means the Coyotes should take fewer penalties as the roster improves and younger players adjust their game to the NHL level.

 203.
The team’s frequent too many men on the ice calls are unusual but not necessarily an unsolvable issue. While they lead the league this season, last year, their first under Head Coach André Tourigny saw them take only five calls. So the problem doesn’t seem to be coaching related, although it will require coaching to solve.

 204.
While it is fine that the Coyotes are taking penalties during a tank season, this can not be allowed to carry over when they start to get competitive. Eventually, the team will be competing for something other than the first overall pick, and by then, they will hopefully find a way to stay out of the box.

 222.

 223.
 224.
Per the NHL, Mr. Barroway is currently suspended and forbidden to contact the team.

Yesterday, just before the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche were set to face off in Colorado, an alarming story was released. The Aspen Daily News reported that Andrew Barroway, who currently owns 5% of the Coyotes, had been arrested on felony and misdemeanor assault charges related to an incident involving his wife at a Colorado hotel.

 225.
Per the report from Aspen Daily News, the affidavit stated that Barroway’s wife’s injuries include “a large bruise on her left thigh, a cut on her right thumb, bruises on both knees and both ankles, a red left cheek and two dried blood spots on her throat.” Reports also indicate that Andrew Barroway strangled his wife with one hand to the point where she “saw stars.”

 226.
The judge overseeing the case, 9th Judicial District Chief Judge John Neily, issued a mandatory protection order prohibiting Barroway from having any contact with his wife, except through a third party when they exchange their children. Andrew Barroway was also forbidden to drink alcohol as part of the court order.

 227.
The NHL swiftly issued a statement advising that they were suspending Mr. Barroway, meaning that he is “precluded from being active with the club and any club interactions, including attending games.”

 228.
There likely wasn’t going to be much interaction with the team anyway, as Craig Morgan also reported that since Barroway, since selling 95% of the team, Barroway has had no functional role.

 229.
The details from the report are disturbing, and the NHL’s decision to suspend Mr. Barroway is absolutely correct. Mr. Barroway’s actions need to be swiftly condemned by the NHL, which will hopefully also include removing his 5% ownership stake in the Coyotes. Given the nature of the charges, there will likely be legal consequences for Mr. Barroway as well, although it is too soon to know the full extent.

 230.
If you need help, the Arizona Foundation for Women lists several shelters throughout the state. Additionally, if you can donate, I’m sure any of the programs on the list would be happy for your support.

 249.
 250.
The Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche will play each other twice over the next three days.

Game Preview

 251.
The Arizona Coyotes may not have the Mullett Magic on the road, but that doesn’t mean you can go easy on them. The Coyotes showed they wouldn’t go down without a fight on Wednesday when they took the Edmonton Oilers to overtime, even if it wasn’t enough to win.

 252.
Special teams played a significant part in the Yotes’ last game, with three of the six regulation goals scored on the power play. J.J. Moser tallied the Coyotes’ lone power play goal, while both Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lit the lamp for the Oilers.

 253.
The Oilers had two power play goals compared to the Coyotes’ one, and it shouldn’t surprise you that they had twice as many penalties too. Penalties have been an issue for the Coyotes all season, and it tends to bite them.

 254.
Wednesday may have been a loss, but it was another excellent night for the Desert Dogs’ core. Clayton Keller had two goals after Moser got the Coyotes’ on the board, and Nick Schmaltz, Barrett Hayton, Matias Maccelli, and Lawson Crouse all had assists, with Schmaltz having two. The extra point may have hurt the Coyotes’ lottery odds, but at least the right players are scoring.

 255.
Despite dealing with substantial injuries, the Colorado Avalanche look like they will make the playoffs this year. They have seven wins in their last ten games, and with a game in hand, they could retake the top spot in the Central Division.

 256.
The Avalanche’s 3-2 win over the Coyotes on the 11th was the start of a very successful string of games. They had a four-game road trip where they beat the Montréal Canadiens, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Ottawa Senators, and the Detroit Red Wings before returning home to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-0. The streak ended on Wednesday when they fell 5-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

 257.
Colorado may have helped themselves move up the rankings, but their win streak didn’t help the Coyotes much, other than beating the Senators. But wins over the Canadiens and Blackhawks strongly indicate that the Avalanche takes the bottom-feeder teams seriously, which could prove dangerous for the Desert Dogs.

 258.
Tonight will be the first of two games these two teams play against each other. After this matchup, they will return to Arizona and play Sunday afternoon in a matinee game.

 259.
Players to Watch

 260.
Arizona: Clayton Keller - With his second two-goal night in five games, Clayton Keller has 34 goals and 78 points in 72 games. It truly has been a monster season for the 24-year-old forward, and he has ten games left to finish it strong.

 261.
Colorado: Nathan MacKinnon - MacKinnon had an assist in the Avalanches’ last game and comes into tonight’s game riding a ten-game point streak. He missed significant time this season but has 90 points in 59 games.

 262.
Injuries

 263.
Arizona: Zach Kassian (questionable, upper body), Josh Brown (questionable, undisclosed), Jakub Voráček (concussion), Shea Weber (ankle), Bryan Little (ear), Andrew Ladd (knee)

 264.
Colorado: Cale Makar (questionable, lower body), Evan Rodrigues (concussion), Artturi Lehkonen (finger), Josh Manson (lower body), Pavel Francouz (lower body), Erik Johnson (ankle), Gabriel Landeskog (knee)

 265.
Puck Drop

 266.
Tonight’s game will start at 6:00 pm Arizona time and will air on Bally Sports Arizona Extra and ESPN 620 AM.

 285.
 286.
The Arizona Coyotes look to get their first win of their three-game road trip.

Game Preview

 287.
The Arizona Coyotes’ point streak came to an end with a 2-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets last night. The Coyotes kept things close, but the Mullett Magic did not follow them on the road.

 288.
Winnipeg struck first with an early goal from Nikolaj Ehlers, giving the Jets a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the game. The Coyotes had a chance to tie things up on the power not long after, but Adam Lowry scored short-handed to give the Jets an early 2-0 lead.

 289.
The Coyotes’ lone goal came midway through the second period, with Barrett Hayton getting his 15th goal of the season. Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz assisted on the goal, showing the top line’s continued effectiveness.

 290.
Unfortunately, after getting within one, the Coyotes proceeded to take the next four penalties, including a four-minute double minor for high-sticking. The Jets had six power play chances during the game, and while the Coyotes managed to kill them all, it made it difficult for them to mount their comeback.

 291.
Last night the Coyotes played a team hoping to secure their Wild Card spot, but tonight’s opponent has a more solid position. The Edmonton Oilers are third in the Pacific Division with 88 points over 71 games.

 292.
The Oilers come into tonight’s game riding a four-game win streak and have six wins in their last seven games. But, perhaps the only good sign for the Coyotes is that the San Jose Sharks took the Oilers to overtime this past Monday.

 293.
Edmonton wasn’t very active at the trade deadline, but they made some key additions. They added Nick Bjugstad from the Coyotes and defenseman Mattias Ekholm from the Nashville Predators.

 294.
Both players have played exceptionally well for the Oilers since being acquired. Bjugstad has three goals and an assist over eight games with the Oilers, while Ekholm has three goals and six assists over ten. The Oilers got two high-quality players, but will it be enough?

 295.
The Coyotes will need to start hot, get good goaltending, and refrain from taking penalties if they want to compete tonight. The Oilers have enough skill to make a team like the Coyotes pay, so they can not afford to give them the opportunity.

 296.
Players to Watch

 297.
Arizona: Barrett Hayton - Hayton registered his 15th goal against the Jets and is close to hitting the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his career. Hayton comes into tonight’s game riding an eight-game point streak.

 298.
Edmonton: Connor McDavid - McDavid had two assists against the Sharks and comes into tonight’s game riding a five-game point streak.
