20.
Your daily dose of Wild news, along with other interesting stories from around the NHL.

We can all breathe a little bit easier this morning. On Wednesday night, the Minnesota Wild were facing the Colorado Avalanche in a must-win-if-they-want-to-win-the-division game. Well, thanks to a whole lot of depth players doing their job supplying the offense, the Wild came away with a 4-2 win over the divisional rivals.

 21.
It started with a super goal from Marcus Johansson after he got a near-perfect pass from Joel Eriksson Ek, who just decided to pull off a no-look between-the-legs netfront dish to the scorer.

 22.

 23.

 24.
JOHANSSON! An incredible pass from Eriksson Ek to set him up. Unreal. 1-0 MIN. pic.twitter.com/aM4vUYmeOM
— Hockey Wilderness (@hockeywildernes) March 30, 2023
 25.

 26.
 27.

 28.
Colorado tied it up after that, but Sam Steel — after missing being a scratch for multiple games — scored his ninth goal of the season to put the Wild up 2-1.

 29.
And then it was none other than Frederick Gaudreau who got a breakaway in the second period and made the home team pay for it by doubling the Wild’s lead.

 30.

 31.

 34.
 35.

 36.
Lars Eller scored to make us worry a little bit in the third period (and the Avalanche were pushing very hard in the final minutes; thank you Gustavsson for doing everything) but Gaudreau notched a shorthanded empty-net goal to clinch the 4-2 victory.

 37.
It really was all the guys that don’t get many chances, leading the way tonight over the reigning Cup champs.

 38.
With these two points, the Wild are now three points above the Dallas Stars and Avalanche, who are tied with 94 points in 74 games. Minnesota is sitting pretty on top of the Central Division with just seven games remaining and is the hottest team in the National Hockey League.

 39.
We’re being serious. In their last 21 games, they have earned just one regulation loss. They are racking up the points and we could see a banner in The X.

 40.
That’s Wild

 41.

 42.
In case you missed it yesterday, we put out some more details about our switch over to Zone Coverage that is happening in April. We are planning to launch the new site on April 3. But, with the transfer happening and all that technical behind-the-scenes stuff going on, we will not be able to post here from Thursday night until we have the site up and running. If there are any issues or delays, look at our Twitter for information. [Hockey Wilderness]
 43.

 44.
Filip Gustavsson has been absolutely unreal this season for the Wild, but there is a difference between being a good goaltender against the entire NHL (including the really bad teams) and winning a playoff series. [10K Rinks]
 45.

 46.
The Wild were interested in college free agent Jason Polin, but he signed with the Avalanche on Wednesday. [NHL dot com]

 52.

 53.
Oof. The Ottawa Senators seem to be losing Thomas Chabot for the rest of the season and their late push to get into the playoffs. [NHL dot com]
 54.

 55.
Paul Maurice had a little bit of a meltdown at his Florida Panthers during Wednesday’s comeback against the Toronto Maple Leafs. [Sportsnet]

 77.
It’s a big one.

Oh, boy. The Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche are fighting so damn hard at the top of the Central Division and this could put either team far enough ahead and that the remaining games could matter less. It’s a substantial game for the playoff picture.

 84.
John Klingberg has returned from a minor injury but Ryan Reaves and Brandon Duhaime are dealing with some day-to-day stuff, so they are out for tonight. In Reaves’s place, is defenseman Alex Goligoski trying stuff out as a forward and Sam Steel is taking over Duhaime’s spot on the third line.

 109.
What to expect when we make the change to Zone Coverage in April.

Earlier this month, we took a look at what everyone should expect when we at Hockey Wilderness join Zone Coverage in April, after Vox Media decided to cut funding to this website about the Minnesota Wild.

 110.
But now, with the transfer to Zone Coverage just days away, we have some more detailed information. If the earlier primer was to get everyone prepared with a broad lens, this is getting into the fine details and more technical side of the website.

 111.
As of right now, since we will not be getting all of the stuff that makes the website run from Vox Media until March 31, we are expecting the official launch of the new Hockey Wilderness to be Monday, April 3. That means we will not be able to publish anything over the weekend, but we will be back and off to a roaring start next week.

 112.
There are just a few things to make note of:

 113.

 114.
When you visit the new site for the first time, you will need to create a new account (it will just take a minute or two). As this is running on a new system separate from Vox, your account will not carry over. Or, you can just lurk and read all the articles without commenting, but we encourage you to sign up.

 115.
Speaking of comments, the commenting system will be a little bit different to the current system you’re using. It might take a little while to get used to, but it will be able to provide the same feeling and be useful during our gamethreads.

 116.
All the old Hockey Wilderness stories published before this transfer will now exist on the new website. Nothing will be lost except the fanposts, some images within articles, and old comments.

 117.
And just in case you were wondering, it will be the same URL (hockeywilderness.com) so you do not need to change your bookmarks.

 118.

 119.
This is still going to be a work in progress and we are always going to be tinkering with it to make it the best place to get your Wild fix. So, with that in mind, please be patient with us and let us know if there are any issues that you notice.

 120.
As always, we appreciate you sticking with us as we have gone through this process. We are over the moon to be heading to Zone Coverage and so excited to show everyone what we have in store for the future. It is going to be so damn good.

 138.

 139.
 140.
Your daily dose of Wild news, along with other interesting stories from around the NHL.

We know, we know. At times this season we’ve said that some upcoming games were “must-win” and by definition they were not. But hear us out, Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche really could be the do-or-die moment for the Minnesota Wild in their attempt to finish the season on top of the Central.

 141.
The Avalanche are just one point behind the Wild in second place, with one game in-hand. Of course, that one game can matter a whole lot, but if the Wild are able to pull two points out tonight and make the point distance worth at least two games, then it at least holds Colorado off for a while. And not even to mention that the Dallas Stars are just one point behind the Wild as well, in third place, having played the same amount of games as Minnesota.

 142.
So it’s just a big cluster at the top of this division and with eight games left for the Wild, really, every point they get is needed.

 143.
That’s Wild

 144.

 145.
Wild fans really are not fanatics of the Fanatics deal with the NHL to supply fans with fan gear and jerseys of players that they are fans of that play on the team that they are fanatics for. [10K Rinks]
 146.

 147.
It might just be poor timing, but the Avalanche are surging as the Wild come and visit them. Luckily, Minnesota has been the best team in the entire NHL the last couple weeks. [StarTribune]
 148.

 149.

 150.
Off the trail...

 151.

 152.

 153. Flyers head coach John Tortorella is preaching patience following this “godforsaken season” with this team. Well, a heck of a way to start out his time here. [Inquirer]
 154.

 155.
Fighting in hockey has seen an evolution over the last several decades. From the Bullies days to now where teams are opting for skill over face-punchers as their depth players. Explore how the evolution took place and hear from some legendary fighters what they think about the past, present, and future of fighting in this sport. [The Athletic]

 157.
A potential buyer of the Ottawa Senators has claim to LeBreton Flats, the potential site for a new arena closer to the actual city of Ottawa. 179.
Your daily dose of Wild news, along with other interesting stories from around the NHL.

Some wins come because of a team effort (almost every one) but those few victories where it was laid upon a couple individuals’ shoulders, those are the magical ones.

 180.
On Monday night, it was up to Marc-Andre Fleury and Matt Boldy to rescue a mediocre performance and make it their own. The Minnesota Wild ended up earning a 5-1 win over potential first-round opponents, the Seattle Kraken and those two are to blame.

 181.
As soon as the puck dropped, Seattle threw everything they had at Fleury but he was proven to be unstoppable for the first 50 minutes of the game. The Kraken finished with 38 shots on goal and 65 shot attempts, and just one of those shots ended up behind Fleury. He was standing on his head through every odd-man rush and penalty kill, helping Boldy eventually get another milestone.

 182.
It was Jake Middleton that opened the scoring but Boldy certainly put his own stamp on the offense. A natural hat trick as the Wild’s second, third, and fourth goals of the game to put this game so out of reach and for him to really yell to the world that he is a very good hockey player. Hell, he now has 28 goals and there were periods where he was a little invisible this season.

 183.
Thanks to those guys, the Wild are staying in first place of the Central Division, with one point up over the Colorado Avalanche but they have a game in-hand.

 184.
That’s Wild

 185.

 186.
This fourth line of Mason Shaw, Connor Dewar, and Ryan Reaves, has found their groove and they are an absolute engine. [10K Rinks]
 187.

 188.
GM Bill Guerin should be getting some credit for the Wild’s success this season. [StarTribune]
 189.

 232.
Marc-Andre Fleury
Filip Gustavsson

 233.
Calen Addison is a healthy scratch once again (along with Sam Steel), but other than that the Wild’s lineup stays the same.

 234.
Projected Kraken lineup

 235.
Jared McCann — Matthew Baniers — Jordan Eberle
Jaden Schwartz — Alexander Wennberg — Morgan Geekie
Eeli Tolvanen — Yanni Gourde — Oliver Bjorkstrand
Brandon Tanev — Ryan Donato — Daniel Sprong

 236.
Vince Dunn — Adam Larsson
Jamie Oleksiak — William Borgen
Carson Soucy — Justin Schultz

 237.
Philipp Grubauer
Martin Jones

 238.
The only advantage the Wild have over the Kraken is general talent on the blue line, and certainly in net. If Minnesota keeps up the same defensive effort that it has displayed recently, then they can get the overall upper hand. As it stands though, the Kraken have a whole lot of forward depth that not even a lot of teams around the league can compete with.

 259.
Your daily dose of Wild news, along with other interesting stories from around the NHL.

The Minnesota Wild are in a precarious spot and the final remaining games of the regular season might actually be exciting.

 260.
Typically, we’re treated to gassed teams just wanting to either be in the postseason already or be home. But now, there are things to play for and with nine games left, the Central Division is still wide open. It is a three-way race between the Colorado Avalanche (92 points, 10 games remaining), the Dallas Stars (92 points, nine games remaining), and the Wild (93 points, nine games remaining). It is tight.

 261.
And realistically, there is a benefit beyond just winning the division and getting to hang a banner in the rafters of your arena. Those three teams would probably much rather face the Seattle Kraken and their absolutely terrible goaltending in the first round, compared to facing each other. For the Wild, this means avoiding the reigning Cup champs and potentially exiting early once again.

 262.
What about the remaining schedule though? Well, the Wild have it worse than the Stars or Avs. Six of their remaining nine games are against current playoff teams, and even the other three include tough teams like the St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators. The points without Kirill Kaprizov have been earned well so far, but squeaking out wins against the Flyers and Blackhawks doesn’t give us a lot of confidence going forward.

 263.
We will be crossing our fingers for the next three weeks.

 264.
That’s Wild

 265.

 266.
Filip Gustavsson has been incredible this season, but he praised the Wild’s defense for helping him become so comfortable and have fun in his first season in St. Paul. [Hockey Wilderness]
 267.

 268.
Speaking of young Swedish netminders, Jesper Wallstedt improved his conditioning and it has helped him greatly this season in Iowa. [10K Rinks]
 269.

 270.
The Minnesota Whitecaps come up short in the Isobel Cup Final, losing 4-3 in overtime to the Toronto Six. They held a 3-2 lead after Jonna Albers scored her fifth goal in three playoff games, but unfortunately couldn’t stave off the comeback. [StarTribune]
 271.

 272.
Among observations made by The Athletic, it was reported that the Wild met with top-tier college free agent Jason Polin on Sunday, as one of the teams heavily interested in the goal-scoring winger. [The Athletic]

 303.

 304.
 305.
The young Minnesota netminder is in his own groove.

Filip Gustavsson has been something else for the Minnesota Wild this season. Coming in as a once-highly regarded goaltending prospect and the trade return from the Ottawa Senators for veteran netminder Cam Talbot, the expectations several months ago was just someone that can adequately support Marc-Andre Fleury as the backup.

 306.
Well, it turns out he just took over the starting role and is now having one of the best seasons in Wild history from a goaltender. With his well-deserved .932 save percentage and 2.01 goals against average being both the second-best markers in the entire NHL, he has burst onto the scene as one of the best at just 24 years old.

 307.
Minnesota is getting buckets of wins with him in between the pipes and even if it was a little nerve-racking at times, they got another one against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday afternoon.

 308.
This recent streak of not playing so well against teams at the bottom of the standings — they lost in a shootout to the Flyers the game before — has not fazed Gustavsson one bit and he believes this team just welcomes the challenge of better teams, like when he stood on his head against the Devils last week.

 309.
“The New Jersey game we played against a really good team,” he said of Tuesday’s wild 47-save win. “It’s weird. It’s like we play a little better against better teams. So, I think we should be fine on Monday against Seattle. I think we’re going to be back in our groove and the right mindset.”

 310.
The Wild have a tough stretch of games to close out the regular season. Six of their nine remaining games are against teams currently in a playoff spot and that includes a back-to-back against a Vegas Golden Knights team that have won eight of their last 10, facing the Colorado Avalanche, and even the non-playoff teams include the ever-annoying St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators; two teams that are not just backing down.

 311.
They are at least currently first in the Central Division, but who knows for how long.

 312.
It is good that Gustavsson is feeling ready to take on any team in the world, and he credits the team in front of him for that.

 313.
“I feel like I’ve played good,” he said. “(Some) of my best hockey probably (as of) late. It’s fun to play in front of this team. It feels like they help with my weaknesses a little bit. Give up some rebounds, they’re always there. They steer the guys to the right angles for me. It’s fun to play in front of them.

 314.
“I played against Minnesota last year, when I was in Ottawa and I knew how good of a team it is. Being a goalie, probably 90 percent mindset and it’s all about the mental game. If you can not have a ghost in your head, it’s fun to be a goalie and it’s easy.”

 315.
Maybe the phrase goaltending is easy isn’t the best way to put it, but playing being the Wild is certainly easier than other positions around the league.

 316.
According to MoneyPuck, the Wild have allowed the sixth-fewest expected goals against at 5-on-5 this season, and when going on a per-hour basis, Minnesota shoots up to third-fewest. They are simply above-average in almost every defensive category you can find.

 317.
But even with the built-in defensive capability this team has, Gustavsson has been saving a whole lot of extra scoring chances that an average goaltender would not.

 321.

 322.
For more visual learners, that’s a whole lot of blue (which is good). Essentially, when Gustavsson is on the ice, there have been a total of 88.6 expected goals so far this season, as he’s faced 1,397 unblocked shot attempts, according to HockeyViz. That is still a lot of shots and chances that could have ended up in the back of the net, but Gustavsson has allowed just 67 total goals and especially is way above league average when it comes to high-danger chances around his net. Among goaltenders this season that have played at least 13 games, Gustavsson ranks seventh in high-danger save percentage (.856).

 323.
To put it simply, he’s been very good and it is not just because he’s playing behind the Wild defense. It helps, but it is not everything.

 324.
With the remaining games ahead of them, Minnesota just needs Gustavsson to keep on doing what he is doing and he seems pretty ready for the challenge.
