20.
Indiana continues to struggle defensively, falling to Milwaukee at home. Bennedict Mathurin scored 29 points.

The Indiana Pacers hung with the Milwaukee Bucks for much of tonight’s game, but against an explosion of points from Jrue Holiday and Giannis Antetokounmpo, it proved difficult for the Pacers to do much more than just hang around. Aaron Nesmith tied things up in the third at 84-84 in the third, but the Bucks responded, outscoring Indiana by 12 to close the quarter.

 21.
Holiday and Antetokounmpo combined for 89 points, 51 from Holiday alone, helping Milwaukee to 62% shooting as Indiana’s defensive woes continue. To their credit, they did manage to hold the Bucks scoreless in the final two minutes to prevent the Bucks from reaching 150 points, but alas, the 149 remains a season high allowed.

 22.
Offensively, Indiana played well, so at least there was that, as Bennedict Mathurin led the way with 29 points and nine rebounds, jawing throughout the game with Holiday and the Bucks, even picking up a technical in a fairly tech heavy game, and flashed some athleticism in an alley oop courtesy of Andrew Nembhard, who had 15 points and 15 assists, committing just one turnover. The Pacers had just eight tonight as a team.

 23.

 24.

 25.
this Andrew Nembhard oop to Bennedict Mathurin was too smooth. ‍ https://t.co/szVwD9igDK pic.twitter.com/myKieSaV5n
— Indiana Pacers (@Pacers) March 30, 2023

 28.

 29.
Aaron Nesmith scored 22, shooting 7-9 and 5-5 from three. Jordan Nwora also had multiple threes, knocking in three to finish with 18. Off the bench, Jalen Smith had an excellent night, scoring 17 points with six rebounds and four assists before fouling out late. Oshae Brissett hit three threes to score 12 while T.J. McConnell shot 6-8, also finishing with 12. Isaiah Jackson closed out the night with nine.

 30.
The Pacers fall to 33-44 and 19-19 at home, setting up just five more games in the 2022-23 season, starting with a matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday.

 31.
Unfortunately, that game won’t see a regular recap as this marks the end of Indy Cornrows. Vox’s decision to shut down the site remains a disappointing one, especially in not being given the opportunity to finish out the season, but it is the reality of the situation.

 32.
Trying to speak on what the site has meant to me over the past 15 years feels impossible, but I am grateful to Tom for allowing me the platform to write about the team I love, and all the highs and lows that have come with it. More recently, Caitlin and Mark have been tremendous colleagues, allowing me to focus on the recaps, and stepping in when games are just too late or night-to-night grind is just a bit too much.

 33.
Writing recaps most nights has made me appreciate the community here especially. Everyone in the game threads have been a joy to chat with, helping me see things I may have otherwise missed, and not being too harsh when it was clear I didn’t have it on a particular night, as well as those who told me a recap sucked when I felt like it was actually a good one.

 34.
Thinking back to Danny Granger winning Most Improved Player, Paul George soaring for a playoff block against Derrick Rose, Roy Hibbert ending the New York Knicks, the bad picks and the good (so grateful to get to watch Myles Turner grow into the player and person he is today), the savvy trades that took dour situations and breathed newfound life into them, from Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis rising into All-Stars to Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield bringing a joyful comradery, or even Lance Stephenson’s returns home, it was all documented here.

 35.
I’ve started and stopped so many thoughts here that I’m struggling to keep things concise, but I just keep coming back to wanting to say “thank you.” I’m far from presumptuous enough to assume I was ever appointment reading, but I’m thankful to everyone over the years who took time to read what I had to say and allowed me to be a part of their journey with the Indiana Pacers. I’m thankful to Tom and I’m thankful to the Indy Cornrows community. I’m thankful. Thank you.

 55.
The Pacers posted stunning comeback win in their last game against the Bucks. Not so sure they will have a similar goal this time around.

The Indiana Pacers (33-43) finish up their four-game season series against the Milwaukee Bucks (54-21) on Wednesday night at the Fieldhouse.

 56.
Who will play and how they will play remain the constant questions for the Pacers as they play out the remainder of the regular season. With a young lineup expected to start sans Tyrese Haliburton against the best team in the league that appears top heavy in the rotation and motivated to maintain that top spot, this game appears more about development for the Pacers, as opposed to hunting for another win.

 57.
Of course, this similar situation was in play recently in Milwaukee and Andrew Nembhard spearheaded an unlikely comeback win for the Pacers which included a 49-point third quarter and 84-point second half. That was likely the last gasp of good air for the Pacers as they have since slid out of play-in contention with six games to go.

 90.
Indiana was unable to keep up with Dallas’s scoring, losing their third straight game. Bennedict Mathurin led the Pacers with 26 points.

A solid start wasn’t enough for the Indiana Pacers as they faded the rest of the way, losing in their return home to the Dallas Mavericks. With five minutes left in the first, Isaiah Jackson put in a basket at the rim after he corralled in three of Indiana’s four offensive rebounds in a single possession to give Indiana a 19-14 lead.

 91.

 94.

 95.
 96.

 97.
Dallas called a timeout following the play and came out a bit sharper, scoring five straight to tie things up, eventually pushing themselves into the lead at the end of the first 29-27. From there, the Pacers were never able to recover, allowing the Mavericks to go on a 14-2 run to start the second, taking advantage of Indiana’s misses and turnovers.

 98.
Indiana wouldn’t get the game back into single digits the rest of the half, but at least got a positive note when Jordan Nwora knocked down a buzzer beater at the end of the half to cut the deficit to 12. Jalen Smith hit a three to open the third, cutting the lead to nine, but the Mavericks again settled things down, scoring eight straight as a response.

 99.
Things looked especially dire midway through the third when the Mavs extended their lead to 21, but the Pacers finally found some success from beyond the arc, knocking down four straight threes to cut the lead to 13. On defense, the Pacers struggled to get stops, but appeared in good shape when they trapped Luka Doncic in the corner.

 100.
Somehow, Doncic worked himself out of it by whipping the ball across the court to James Hardy, who knocked down a wide open three. It was one of the most impressive passes of the season, completely breaking Indiana’s positive run. Doncic again assisted to Hardy in the corner then scored seven straight himself, suddenly putting the Mavs up big at 97-74.

 101.

 104.

 105.
 106.

 107.
It was a frustrating third quarter outcome for a Pacers team that had overcome a dreadful second quarter to shoot 56% in the third, including 5-8 from three. Unfortunately, and has been the case in recent games, positives offense hasn’t translated into positive defense as Dallas shot 71%, outscoring Indiana 40-27 in the quarter.

 108.
Though Dallas entered tonight on a four game losing streak, it was going to be a tall order for the Pacers to come up with a win regardless, especially with the growing injury report adding Buddy Hield with a non-COVID illness in addition to Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner.

 109.
It did provide ample opportunity for Indiana’s rookies, especially, with Bennedict Mathurin leading the way with 26 points, breaking out of a two-game slump since moving into the starting lineup. Unfortunately, he did struggle on the defensive end and with turnovers, committing a team high four.

 110.
He did look good knocking down back-to-back triples in the third quarter to help give Indiana their final push in an otherwise dismal night for the team from three. Subtracting the four straight makes, the Pacers were just 4-24 the rest of the night, a bad spot to be against a Dallas team that made 18 of them.

 111.
Andrew Nembhard had 17 himself, joining Jalen Smith as the only starters to shoot 50%, Smith scoring 11 with six rebounds. Off the bench, T.J. McConnell led the way with 15 points and seven assists. Isaiah Jackson neared a double double with eight points and 12 rebounds, pulling in nine on the offensive end, and Oshae Brissett did plenty of work getting to the line, scoring 10, going 8-8 from the free throw line.

 112.
Any lingering chance the Pacers might’ve had making a play-in push was likely dashed with tonight’s loss, pushing them four games back of Chicago with six to play. On the opposite end of the standings, they do fall back to 12th, again likely temporarily with Washington idle, but are now just a half game up on 13th place Orlando, winners of three straight.

 113.
Indiana will be back in action on Wednesday night when they host the Milwaukee Bucks.

 132.
 133.
The Pacers have plenty of pregame question marks heading into their game with Dallas.

The Indiana Pacers (33-42) are back at the Fieldhouse to begin a homestand on Monday against the Dallas Mavericks (36-39).

 134.
The Pacers beat the Mavs in Dallas about a month ago, but player availability for this game could make this rematch seem like two new teams. Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner combined for 56 points in Dallas, but both are questionable for the Pacers. Buddy Hield and Chris Duarte are already ruled out.

 135.
As for Dallas, they have slid out of a play in spot in the West and will have to play the Pacers with their star, Luka Doncic who has to sit after collecting his 16th technical foul for the season. Yep, been one of those years for Dallas. Unfortunately, this is Luka’s only trip to Indy this year, so that stinks for fans who were looking to catch a glimpse of the young hoop savant.

 168.
Another poor defensive effort for Indiana drops them to 1-3 on their road trip in a loss to Atlanta. Jordan Nwora scored 33 points, 25 of those in the second quarter.

The quick turnaround appeared to have caught up to the Indiana Pacers by the end of their game against the Atlanta Hawks, as they got outscored 40-24 in the 12 minutes following both their final lead of the game and Trae Young’s ejection. It’s also possible they just weren’t going to hold up anyway as their defense was a wreck all night, allowing both 50% shooting from three and 76 paint points to the Hawks.

 169.
The Pacers didn’t appear to be suffering any sort of fatigue to start the game at least, jumping out to a quick 22-13 lead thanks to 10 quick points from Andrew Nembhard, but the Hawks would turn things around quickly, closing the quarter on a 26-13 run to go up by four. Both teams shot nearly 60% in the quarter, a trend that would continue in the second.

 176.
Jordan Nwora got things started in the quarter with a three, an auspicious start for what would wind up being an all-time quarter for him. His scoring carried the Pacers through the entire quarter, winding up with a staggering 25 points on 9-11 shooting, hitting three threes in the process.

 177.
Though there weren’t much in the way of stops, the Pacers still managed to inch their back into the lead behind Nwora’s scoring, tying it up on a three and following it up with a dunk to put Indiana on top.

 184.
Indiana was able to hold onto their lead through the rest of the half, going up by as many as six on a big time Aaron Nesmith dunk, but still relinquished the final four of the half to see their lead trimmed down to just two as both teams broke 70 in the half.

 189.
 190.

 191.
The game would go back-and-forth early in the third before Atlanta looked to make a push on a deep three by Young. The Hawks led 84-81 when Young knocked down the shot, going to the ground in the process. The officials, however, assessed the Young had kicked his leg out to draw the foul against Nesmith, negating the basket.

 192.
Tyrese Haliburton knocked down a three of his own on the other end to tie the game up at 84-84 when Young threw the ball towards the ref, earning himself a quick ejection in the process. Haliburton knocked down the technical free throw to put Indiana on top, but Atlanta responded in a big way, outscoring the Pacers 20-11 to end the third.

 193.
The Pacers were never able to recover. No one was providing any lights out shooting and the defense wasn’t improving one iota, allowing the Hawks to push their advantage as high as 17 with eight minutes in the fourth. Buddy Hield would make things marginally interesting with a trio of threes that helped cut the lead to 10, but again, with no stops, the Pacers could only tread water at best, running out of steam in a 13-point loss.

 194.
One of the reasons Indiana’s defense was so bad tonight was in part due to the absence of Myles Turner, amplifying the point of attack mistakes but also removing any consistent rim protection. Isaiah Jackson provided some positives offensively with 14 points, but wasn’t much of a presence on the other end, finding himself with more fouls than defensive stats. That situation didn’t improve much with Jalen Smith despite his 11 points and seven rebounds.

 195.
That ultimately allowed the Hawks to score 76 points in the paint, including 22 second chance points on 15 offensive rebounds. It didn’t help that the Hawks were 15-30 from three point range, forcing the Pacers to have to honor Atlanta’s shooters enough, especially when it came to a bench that had the upper hand despite Nwora’s night.

 196.
Nwora finished with 33 points and six rebounds, coming up one shy of tying his career high. His 25 second quarter points set a regular season franchise record (dating back to 1996-97), passing Mike Dunleavy, who posted 24 in a quarter. While he scored well, no one else really came along for the ride as no Pacer reached 20 points.

 197.
Haliburton came closest with 19, looking much more comfortable than he did last night, knocking down a pair of threes and shooting 7-13 overall. He did move the ball extremely well, picking up 13 assists to just one turnover. Nembhard had just two points following his own first quarter push, finishing with 12 while Nesmith scored 11. Bennedict Mathurin again struggled to find his spot as a starter, scoring just four on four shot attempts.

 198.
Off the bench, Hield led the way with 16, coming alive in the fourth after showing his own struggles in his second start off the bench. T.J. McConnell wrapped up the double figure scorers with 10, though he was turnover prone again tonight, committing four of Indiana’s 17, allowing 24 points off turnovers as a team. Chris Duarte returned to action, but left the game after just five minutes after still feeling soreness in his ankle.

 199.
The loss drops the Pacers to 33-42 on the year, back into 12th place for the time being, a half game behind Washington. The Wizards play tomorrow, but Indiana currently sits with the seventh worst record, currently on top of Portland by percentage points as the Blazers may be looking to finish out the year without Damian Lillard.

 200.
The Pacers wrap up their final road trip of the year at 1-3, setting them up for just two more road games the rest of the year. The first of those won’t be for another week, giving Indiana a three game home stand in the interim as just seven games remain in the regular season. It will be a challenging trio of games however, starting with a matchup against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday.

 220.
The Pacers will endure a gnarly back-to-back in Atlanta before heading back to Indy.

The Indiana Pacers (33-41) finish up their four game roadie on Saturday evening against the Atlanta Hawks (36-37).

 221.
The Pacers face a devilish back-to-back after getting rolled in Boston on Friday night, they had to travel to Atlanta for a 5 p.m. ET tip against the Hawks who have been resting at home for the last two days.

 222.
The Pacers had nearly a full roster in Boston but on the short back-to-back several key players are questionable. Meanwhile, the Hawks continue battling to hold onto a post-season position in the East after a coaching change.

 223.
All of this is to say, the Pacers are impossible to predict these days, so there’s a great change they cobble together a surprising win, unless of course, all of those questionable players sit. Then it will almost be certain. (shoulder shrug emoji)

 255.
 256.
Indiana was outscored 60-40 in the second, losing to Boston on the road. Myles Turner and Tyrese Haliburton each scored 20 points.

A competitive first half turned into a blowout for the Boston Celtics after the break, topping the Indiana Pacers in impressive fashion. The Pacers kept things competitive for the first half, but an 11-0 Celtics run early in the third quarter, featuring an inbounds steal three, effectively put the game out of reach the rest of the way.

 257.
Despite that first half being competitive, the Pacers didn’t actually lead much in this one. A 9-8 lead three minutes into the first quarter was their last advantage, though they were able to lock things up in a tie on numerous occasions, including on a pair of dunks late in the first quarter, one courtesy of Jordan Nwora.

 264.
They still weren’t able to get over the hump no matter how many dunks they had, including their last tie at 44-44 thanks to Buddy Hield.

 268.

 269.
 270.

 271.
Jaylen Brown knocked down a three as a response, kicking off a 14-4 run that put Boston ahead by double figures for the first time, a lead the Pacers were able to cut in half by halftime. Tyrese Haliburton returned to action, ending the first half with a floater and starting the second half with a floater to make it a three point game.

 272.
That’s when Boston opened things up, scoring 11 straight to push the game into double figures. The Pacers did manage to keep the game from getting too far out of hand at that point, but missed free throws kept them from ever pushing the game back into single digits as things became more shaky at the end of the third, Boston extending their lead to 16.

 273.
If the game wasn’t over at that point, it certainly was at the open of the fourth when Boston outscored Indiana 14-2 to push their lead out to 28. Indiana’s starters never returned and by the end, the Pacers could only muster up 95 points, totaling just 40 second half points after scoring 55 in the first half.

 274.
The second half offset a really good first half showing for Indiana, shooting just 13-38 from the floor after the break as Boston locked in their interior defense. It was a bit easy for Boston to focus their defense on what Indiana was doing around the paint because the Pacers shot a season worst 4-25 from three point range.

 275.
That poor three point shooting was present all night, though Indiana was able to overcome that in the first half by shooting 70.6% inside the arc. That fell to 45.8% in the second half. It didn’t help matters that Indiana also struggled at the free throw line, missing five of their first seven attempts and nine overall, shooting just 13-22 on the night, keeping them from ever climbing back into the game after Boston went on their third quarter run.

 276.
It wasn’t a total loss for Indiana though, with Haliburton getting back on the court and Myles Turner playing well on his birthday, each player combining for 20. Turner was 9-13 form the floor with six attempts and a block. Turner was excellent with his size, taking advantage of the mismatches throughout the night on his shots in the paint.

 283.
Haliburton meanwhile, exhibited a fair share of rust, shooting just 1-5 from three point range and committing five turnovers, but was sharp in his play around the basket, coming through with some tough finishes while finishing with nine assists.

 284.
Off the bench, Isaiah Jackson led the way with 12 points, pulling in six rebounds while T.J. McConnell had his scoring on point, dropping 10. Each player shot 5-10. There was a shift in the lineup tonight by moving Bennedict Mathurin into the starting lineup and moving Hield to the second unit, a move that didn’t work great for their individual production.

 285.
Hield scored eight, knocking down one of Indiana’s four threes (Turner, Haliburton, and Oshae Brissett were the other three) and Mathurin scored just two, going 1-4 from the floor. Mathurin seemed to be focused on his play on the defensive end, which limited his opportunities on the offensive side of the ball, giving him a good glimpse at what being the best two-way player in the league entails.

 286.
Indiana remains in 11th place in the East following the loss, but move back into a tie with Washington, who picked up a win tonight against San Antonio. The Pacers will have an especially quick turnaround for a back-to-back, traveling south to Atlanta for a Saturday evening game against the Atlanta Hawks, tipping off at 5 p.m. Eastern.

 306.
The Pacers look to go 2-0 at TD Garden this season.

The Indiana Pacers (33-40) remain on the road on Friday night when they take on the Boston Celtics (50-23) at TD Garden.

 307.
The Pacers roll into the garden following an impressive close in Toronto with Andrew Nembhard leading the way, mitigating the continued absence of Tyrese Haliburton. The challenge is ramped up against the dynamic Celtics lineup, as the title contenders try to right the ship after some recent bad losses. However, the C’s have won 5 of their last 7 games. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown continue to make things go in Boston, with Tatum averaging over 30 points and Brown over 26 points. That’s a nice one-two threat every night.

 308.
Haliburton does remain questionable and has appeared to be moving around ok off the court. If Hali can’t go, rookie Bennedict Mathurin will likely stay in the starting lineup. The rook has been offensively efficient in the past two games after returning from a sprained ankle. He scored 15 points on 5 FGAs in Toronto and 18 points on 10 shots in Charlotte, making all four 3-point attempts in the two games.

 309.
This is the third and final game of the season series with the road team winning the first two games earlier in the year.
