20.
Michigan unable to keep its momentum rolling in conference play.

Yet to lose a series in conference play this year, the Michigan baseball team took a short trip up the road to East Lansing to take on Michigan State over the weekend for three games. Michigan entered the weekend on a hot streak and sought to keep climbing in the Big Ten standings as part of a late season push.

 21.
Friday’s game would get off to a quick, yet interesting, start for Michigan, as Mitch Voit would score the game’s first run on a balk, putting Michigan up 1-0 in the first inning. Michigan State would answer right back though with an RBI single to tie the game up in the bottom of the frame.

 22.
The Spartans would jump out to a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning on a solo homer, but Michigan would rally to tie the game in the eighth inning, interestingly enough, on another balk. The score would hold at 2-2, and the game would head to extra innings, where Michigan State would come away with a 3-2 victory in the tenth, scoring on a sacrifice fly.

 23.
In the loss, Michigan’s Chase Allen was terrific on the mound for much of the game. He would pitch seven innings, surrendering only five hits and two earned runs. Despite taking the loss, Jacob Denner was alright in relief as well, pitching 2.2 innings before surrendering a run.

 24.
Michigan State went right back to work on Saturday, striking for two runs in the first inning. Mack Timbrook would drive in a run for Michigan in the second, but Michigan State would respond with a solo homer to go up 3-1. Stephen Hrustich would tie the game in the top of the third with a two-run homer of his own.

 25.
Through the third and fourth innings, the Spartans kept swinging the bat well, jumping out to a 7-3 lead and ultimately chasing Dylan Vigue from the game. Homers from Collin Priest and Will Rogers in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively though, would help Michigan trim the deficit to 7-6. After another Michigan State run in the sixth, Jonathan Kim would homer in the eighth to tie the game at 8-8.

 28.
Back and better than ever!

Jonathan Kim with the homer to tie the game! #GoBLue pic.twitter.com/bL7y2fSuMt
— Michigan Baseball (@umichbaseball) May 4, 2024

 31.
 32.

 33.
In the end, though, Michigan State’s offense just proved to be too much. The Spartans would grab the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a solo homer to go ahead 9-8, and dealt the deathblow on a three-run homer to go up 12-8, which would be the final score.

 34.
Looking to salvage the weekend with a win, Michigan got on the board first to go up 1-0 on a Michigan State throwing error in the first inning. A solo homer in the first and a two-run shot in the second though would give the Spartans a quick 3-1 lead. Another RBI single in the third would push their lead to 4-1.

 35.
Michigan would show some fight in the fourth inning, as Mack Timbrook would connect for a three-run shot to tie the game. Jonathan Kim would then hit his second homer of the weekend to put Michigan up 5-4, but the Spartans would claw back in the bottom of the fourth for three runs to go up 7-5.

 36.

 42.

 43.
Timbrook would drive in another run with a double in the fifth to make the score 7-6, but Michigan State would answer right back with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to go back up 8-6. Michigan would tack on another run in the sixth on a Mitch Voit homer and managed to tack on another in the ninth to tie the game at 8-8.

 44.
In extra innings, Michigan would get two scoreless innings from Ricky Kidd and one from Jacob Denner. The Wolverines were able to keep the Spartans off the board while scoring two runs in the twelfth courtesy of Cole Caruso and Joe Longo singles. Michigan was able to hold on for a 10-8 win to avoid the sweep.

 45.
With the series loss, Michigan’s record is still above .500, but the Wolverines now stand at 25-23 on the year. Fortunately, Michigan has four chances at home this week to get the momentum back on its side, as the team will welcome in Central Michigan for its mid-week game on Tuesday night and Purdue for three games over the weekend.

 67.
 68.
Get ready for a lot of pick-and-rolls and pick-and-pops

Throughout this whirlwind of a roster rebuild, I’ve tried to distinguish a pattern among the players that Dusty May has recruited to come to Michigan, via the transfer portal and from the 2024 class. All these players are obviously talented, but after thinking about it for a while and breaking down the film of all these players, it finally clicked:

 69.
Every player that May has recruited to come to Michigan thrives when running ball screens.

 70.
The past two seasons, Florida Atlantic May had a top-25 offense in adjusted efficiency on KenPom, and running a ball-screen-heavy offense well is a big reason why. The Owls ran a lot of ball screens in his time at FAU, and considering that and the fact that for $39.99, you can buy May’s Essential Guide to Ball Screen Offense at Championshipproductions.com, it feels safe to assume that the Wolverines will run a ball-screen heavy offense.

 71.

 72.
This isn’t a revolutionary gameplan, as almost every offense in college basketball is based around ball screens. But May uses ball screens in his offensive sets creatively. It’s not just a simple action like we often saw Michigan run with Dug McDaniel last season; once the big catches it on the short roll, there’s cutting, and if the big doesn’t have a great look, he can go right into a dribble handoff or another ball screen on the other side of the floor. But no matter what, May’s offenses are almost never stagnant; there’s always motion to confuse the defenses and generate open looks.

 73.
With the personnel May has recruited, Michigan should be able to thrive off of ball screens. Vlad Goldin, who knows the offense real well from his time at FAU, and Danny Wolf give the Wolverines two talented 7-footers. Both guys can score in the paint and in the mid-range off of the short roll, with Wolf stepping out and hitting the occasional three.

 74.
Both big men have size, a high basketball I.Q., a good feel for the game, and versatility in terms of shot creation and scoring. There will always be at least one seven-footer on the floor, giving Michigan length, rim protection, and oftentimes an offensive mismatch. All those attributes make them the ideal players to run ball screens at Michigan well.

 75.
And you can’t run a good ball screen without good guards, but Michigan now has plenty. Roddy Gayle Jr. showed at Ohio State that he loves to attack the rim. Rubin Jones navigated ball screens to a tee at North Texas and showcased excellent court vision. The same can be said about Tre Donaldson, who thrived running Auburn’s second unit and accounted for a lot of baskets for the Tigers in limited minutes. Also, May’s two 2024 recruits — Justin Pippen and Lorenzo Cason — both have the tools to run the ball screen well and score at the rim or off the bounce on threes off of screens.

 76.
You need spacing and three-point shooting to run pick-and-rolls effectively, and the Wolverines have that. With Nimari Burnett returning, Michigan has another guard that can heat up in a hurry and could even run a ball screen, likely in the second unit.

 77.

 78.

 79.
Nimari Burnett is returning to Michigan for another season. Here’s a friendly reminder of what he’s capable of: scored 21 points against St John’s back in November in what ended up being one of Michigan’s most impressive wins.

pic.twitter.com/Z82kvHNpBp https://t.co/XpxIDEKUkg
— Kellen Voss (@Kellen__Voss) April 30, 2024
 80.

 81.
 82.
 83.

 84.
In forwards Sam Walters and Will Tschetter, Michigan has two players who can stretch the floor and hit the three if defenses crowd the lane to guard the pick-and-roll. And when they aren’t spotting up, Michigan can utilize either of them as the screener and have them pick-and-pop, opening up the lane for cuts and adding another layer to the offense to keep defenses guessing.

 85.
As of May 4, there is still one scholarship spot available on Michigan’s roster, and based on the pattern we’ve already seen, May is likely going to add a player who can thrive in his ball screen offense.

 86.
There’s a lot to like about Michigan’s new roster, and looking at the players Michigan has landed, there’s a clear direction for where May wants to go on offense. Get ready to see a lot of ball screens and an offense that can actually create shots and score efficiently, which is something the Michigan men’s basketball team has lacked for a few seasons now.

 106.
Another crazy transfer portal window has now opened.

Today, April 16, marks the first day of the spring transfer portal window for college football. With the portal being opened for the next two weeks (April 30) and spring practice just about over for most programs, be ready for madness to ensue.

 107.
Expect Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines to be active in the portal to try and plug a few holes this spring. Some positions that could be looked at include quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back. For some more analysis on those positions, check out our own Matt Hartwell’s story on that by clicking here.

 172.
A roster is finally in place, leading to some surprising levels of optimism.

What once looked bleak now seems quite exciting, as Dusty May has completely overhauled the basketball roster. In some ways, it was always going to be addition by subtraction for the Michigan Wolverines, trading Juwan Howard for May and his impressive coaching staff and swapping last year’s roster with…basically any other basketball player.

 173.
However, it is not just any sort of player that May has brought in. No, this is a roster that fits his system, full of hand-selected pieces that clearly mesh together much better than last season’s abomination. Will that immediately translate into results? Many transfer-heavy teams have struggled historically. Still, May seems to be making all of the right moves, and the arrows are pointing up in Ann Arbor.

 174.
How do you think the season will play out for Michigan basketball?

 175.
Perhaps there is a difference between expectations and hopes, but for me I think they are one and the same. Michigan needs to make it back to the NCAA Tournament this season. Yes, this is a big jump from last year, but May is not the type of coach that should require a four-year ramp-up to get this program back on track. Winning a game in March is always a bit random, but getting to the postseason is squarely in this team’s control.

 176.
The Big Ten is full of many unknowns, but the Wolverines should be competing for a top-half finish. The way May has constructed this roster will be just fine for conference play, and while there are going to be some frustrating moments, I expect everything to be humming along well enough by the time January rolls around. This team should be able to make enough waves to matter, and a tournament berth is the mark to beat.

 177.
What do you think? What sort of season would you be satisfied with in the first year under Dusty May? Let us know in the comments below!

 214.
Gach was also heavily considering Ohio State, Wisconsin and Michigan State. He held other offers from Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Penn State and others.

 215.
247Sports’ Allen Trieu scouted Gach and compared him to former Michigan left guard Ben Bredeson:

 216.

High school offensive tackle who can be a swing guy at the next level. Tenacious, physical player who goes to the whistle and finishes plays. Shows functional strength and pad level in addition to the pure willingness to want to move defenders off the ball, all making for a dominant run blocker. Still technically coming along in pass set and pass pro. Physicality shows up in his punch there also. Left tackle in high school who may be more suited as a right side option or interior player at the high-major level. Has added good weight and strength and will continue to do so. Is a solid base-level athlete, but can also continue to improve on pure explosiveness and lateral agility. High-floor type prospect who will give a high-major school depth at several positions and should be a dependable multi-year starter at the Power Five level.

 217.
Gach is ranked the No. 2 player in the state of Michigan, No. 15 interior offensive lineman and No. 236 overall player on 247Sports’ composite. He’s the fifth commitment for Michigan this cycle, as he joins four-star quarterback Carter Smith, four-star defensive lineman Nate Marshall, four-star tight end Eli Owens and four-star defensive lineman Bobby Kanka.

 237.

 238.
 239.
It may seem slow right now, but it isn’t unprecedented.

Early last week, Michigan football picked up its first commitment of the Sherrone Moore era in four-star Nathaniel Marshall out of Oak Park, Illinois. Moore was officially hired as head coach of the Michigan football program on January 26th, meaning it took nearly three months for the program to receive its first commitment from a high school prospect. While certainly not a sign that the sky is falling in Ann Arbor, it has the natives restless as recruiting successes are generally not hard to find following a National Championship season.

 240.
It’s worth noting that Moore did face some extenuating circumstances that most new coaches don’t have to endure. The slow matriculation of former staff members to the NFL delayed Moore’s ability to put together a cohesive staff moving forward. Ben Herbert decided to follow Jim Harbaugh on January 29th, Jesse Minter and Mike Elston followed suit on February 6th, Jay Harbaugh was hired by the Seattle Seahawks on February 13th, Steve Clinkscale moved on on February 14th, and Mike Hart left the program on March 8th. This slow departure is atypical for a head coach who had been promoted internally.

 241.
Moore also experienced a few struggles in hiring as Greg Scruggs was hired to coach the defensive line on March 6th but subsequently resigned on March 21st following a DUI.

 242.
I don’t say all this as a referendum on the start of Sherrone Moore’s tenure as the head coach at Michigan. It’s simply to point out that Moore has had more than a few abnormal circumstances that he’s had to deal with at the start of his tenure.

 243.
Moore should also be credited with the retention of almost all of the recruiting class of 2024. He was fortunate that he didn’t have to find any recruits at the last minute to round out the class. He also retained the commitment of transfers Josh Priebe (Northwestern) and Jaishawn Barham (Maryland) and brought in Dominic Zvada (Arkansas St.) and CJ Charleston (Youngstown St.) while also bringing Amorion Walker (Ole Miss) home.

 244.
So how does Moore’s recruiting efforts compare to his predecessors Jim Harbaugh and Brady Hoke? Is it actually taking longer? Let’s dive in.

 245.
Harbaugh Era

 246.
Jim Harbaugh was hired at Michigan on December 30, 2014. He was able to retain just six players who had committed to the Wolverines prior to his hire, though it’s worth noting that Brady Hoke was struggling to recruit due to the on-field failures of the 2014 team. Four-star Zach Gentry out of New Mexico became Harbaugh’s first commitment on January 25, 2015, followed closely by Reuben Jones (also January 25th) and Nolan Ulizio (January 26th). Five other players committed to Harbaugh and the Wolverines in the class of 2015, as he had very little time before signing day.

 247.
While it only took Harbaugh a little under a month to gain a commitment, he had to do so in a rush as he had to round out the freshmen class for the upcoming fall. Moore has the luxury of only needing to look forward to the next class. The first true apples-to-apples comparison will be between Harbaugh’s class of 2016 to Moore’s class of 2025 — good luck matching that.

 248.
In Harbaugh’s first full recruiting class, he brought in 29 prospects and had the fourth-rated class nationwide. The first commitment he received was from Brandon Peters on April 4, 2015 (a little over three months after he was hired). The class included Michael Onwenu, Josh Metellus, Ben Bredeson, Devin Bush, David Long, Josh Uche, Khaleke Hudson, Lavert Hill, and top-overall prospect Rashan Gary.

 249.
To date, Moore’s first full recruiting class consists of four-star Nathaniel Marshall as well as three-stars Carter Smith, Bobby Kanka, and Eli Owns though it’s still very early in the cycle.

 250.
Hoke Era

 251.
Brady Hoke was hired by Michigan on January 11, 2011. Similar to Harbaugh, Hoke had to work quickly to complete the freshman class for the upcoming fall, the class of 2011 in this case. He was able to retain 10 commitments from the Rich Rodriguez era. The first commitment Hoke received was from Tamani Carter out of Pickerington, Ohio, on January 21st, just 10 days after his hiring!

 252.
Hoke rounded out the class of 2011 with nine more commits, all within 22 days of his hiring. This list included Matt Wile, Russell Bellomy, Chris Bryant, and Frank Clark.

 253.
Once he started focusing on his first full class, the class of 2012, commitments began to roll into Hoke and Michigan program in mid-April. By the end of the cycle, they accumulated 25 commitments and the No. 7 ranked class nationally. This class included the likes of Joe Bolden, Amara Darboh, Devin Funchess, Chris Wormley, and Jehu Chesson.

 254.
Summary

 255.
While Moore has had to endure quite a bit of unexpected coaching staff turmoil, he has had the luxury of not having to frantically add to the initial freshman class. The class of 2024 has remained almost entirely intact, despite being in the era of the transfer portal. Both Harbaugh and Hoke were put into rough spots that required them to fill out recruiting classes with less than two months remaining until Signing Day.

 256.
Harbaugh (April 4th) and Hoke (April 13th) did bring in their first commitments for the following cycle earlier than Moore (April 22nd), though that’s hardly a reason for concern.

 257.
With that being said, both Jim Harbaugh and Brady Hoke had top-10 classes in their first full recruiting cycles that would be instrumental in their successes in the early years of each of their tenures. As the reigning national champions, Sherrone should be in a more advantageous recruiting position and will need to capitalize.

 277.
“Follow Maize n Brew and ponder the question... ‘What if?’”

“Time. Space. Reality. It’s more than a linear path. It’s a prism of endless possibility. Where a single choice can branch out into infinite realities, creating alternate worlds from the ones you know.”

 278.
That’s part of the intro to Marvel’s “What If...?” series on Disney+, the inspiration for what will be an offseason series contemplating a world where things happened differently in college football and in Ann Arbor in 2023.

 279.
Just like the Avengers conquering Thanos and restoring half of the universe’s population, Michigan was victorious over all of college football this past season.

 280.
We’ll explore worlds where things happened differently. Sometimes, the result of a championship will be the same, just in different ways. Other realities are much more grim. Maize n Brew will guide you through these realities and ponder the question, What if...

 281.
What if... Blake Corum didn’t return for his final year of eligibility?

 282.
There was 1:36 left in the first half of Michigan’s senior day and the final home game of the 2022 Wolverines’ season against the Illinois Fighting Illini. Team hero and Heisman candidate Blake Corum had already tallied 108 rushing yards on 18 first-half carries while punching in his 18th touchdown of the season. But right before achieving glory again to put the Wolverines up by two scores, Corum was struck by a defender on the kneecap, and he immediately clutched it in pain.

 283.
Fear, pain, and loss were also felt by many Michigan faithful, knowing that the stakes of what was ahead of them with the Ohio State Buckeyes on the horizon and a return to the College Football Playoff at stake. It was also potentially the final time a Michigan legend may have touched the football field for the maize and blue.

 284.
Corum toughed it out after the Wolverines emerged victorious over Illinois, and gave it a go in the first half against Ohio State in Columbus, but saw just one carry. After the momentous win over the Buckeyes at the Shoe, Michigan would be taking on the rest if the season and the CFP without its star player and face of the program.

 285.
In your reality, Corum solidified his legacy as one of the elite of the elite Michigan men that have come through Ann Arbor. He spurned the NFL to return to the program for “unfinished business” and reclaimed glory for the Michigan Wolverines on college football’s mountain top as the National Champions.

 286.
But in another reality not too distant from yours, Corum went to the pros. He felt his destiny fulfilled in Ann Arbor and wanted to take the recovery time to prepare for the NFL and every football player’s dream of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. There was no double-overtime, lead-changing run, or fourth down conversion on the final drive of regulation in the Rose Bowl. He finished a tier below the legends of Ann Arbor, and they ponder to this day, What if... Blake Corum never got hurt?

 287.
With his exit to the NFL, Michigan turned to Donovan Edwards to be the starter a year earlier and Kalel Mullings to be the short-yardage back in an offense riddled with talent-even without Corum.

 288.
Similar to your timeline, Edwards had the game of his life against Ohio State, rushing on back-to-back possessions for 70-plus yard touchdowns and carrying the Wolverines on his shoulders into postseason play. Naturally, the expectation from the fanbase was for there to be little to no dropoff in the transition because of the way Edwards excelled.

 289.
With Corum not returning, Edwards never lost his touch nor his confidence from that historic run. He burst through the opening gates of the season accounting for over 150 total yards per game with J.J. McCarthy as his quarterback, just playing the first three quarters of games. Michigan was able to use Edwards just as effectively as a receiver out of the backfield than as a running back carrying the ball. It was obvious to college football early on that the Wolverines potentially had the best back in the country on their roster.

 290.
Edwards became a sight to see in the national media’s eyes, the guy to watch in college football alongside the list of players like USC QB Caleb Williams, LSU QB Jayden Daniels, and WR Marvin Harrison Jr. at Ohio State. NFL Draft scouts raved about the versatility of Edwards and how he perfectly fit the mold of what pass-happy offenses in the pros dream about.

 291.
With little depth behind him, Edwards ran for over 200 yards and three touchdowns against Penn State while the Wolverines only threw the ball once in the second half. He followed that up by surpassing the century mark against Ohio State, sealing a game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter to give him 20-plus total touchdowns on the season.

 292.
By year’s end, Edwards was in New York at the Heisman Trophy ceremony, finishing second to Daniels by a handful of votes. He’d finish with one of the greatest seasons from a running back in college football history with just over 1,900 rushing yards and almost 450 receiving yards while scoring 23 times. The uproar from Michigan fans for Edwards not winning the Heisman was loud, and it was the talk of sports media for the remainder of the season.

 293.
But, Edwards wasn’t focused on the accolades, and the team rallied behind his selflessness and focus on the task ahead: winning a national championship. The superstar had his worst game of the season on the ground against Alabama in the Rose Bowl, adding sparks to the Heisman-loss conversation. But, Michigan pulled away victorious thanks to the defense and the arm of McCarthy.

 294.
It all came down to the National Championship Game where the Michigan running back had one of the single greatest games in college football history. He broke away on a 50-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to give the Wolverines the lead. He’d have four runs on the day of over 20 yards and another three catches for 25 yards out of the backfield. Overall, 200 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries.

 295.
Forever, Edwards would be known as the greatest running back in Michigan football history. For not only had he saved the Big Ten Championship season in 2022 and carried the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff, but he answered back with potentially the most impressive season from a running back since Barry Sanders at Oklahoma State in 1988.

 296.
Blake Corum’s legacy still lived on, but it was overshadowed by Edwards and the efforts that he displayed in his stead. Rather than Corum being remembered as the face of the three-peat Michigan run and the National Championship, it is Donovan Edwards who cements his status among the greats to play in the Big House.

 297.
Others in this series:

 298.
What if... J.J. McCarthy never came to Michigan?

 318.
The Wolverines will enter the weekend on a five-game winning streak.

After sweeping Long Beach State at home over the weekend, the Michigan baseball team welcomed in Kent State on Tuesday afternoon with a 23-21 record and riding a four-game winning streak.

 319.
The Wolverines went with a bullpen game, and Kent State was able to find some success early on. In the third inning, the Golden Flashes got on the board twice courtesy of an RBI single and a throwing error by Michigan to grab a 2-0 lead. Michigan though, would even things up at 2-2 in the fourth inning, with Mack Timbrook hitting a sacrifice fly and Joe Longo scoring on a throwing error.

 320.
The game would be a pitchers’ duel from then on, until Kent State reclaimed the lead in the eighth inning, scoring on a wild pitch to make it 3-2. It would extend the lead to 4-2 in the ninth on an RBI double. Michigan however, wasn’t going down without a fight, as Mitch Voit would club a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to make it 4-4.

 321.
The game would head to extra innings, and Brandon Mann pitched a clean two innings to bring the game to the bottom of the eleventh inning. It was then that Stephen Hrustich would be the hero, hitting a two-run walk-off homer to give Michigan a 6-4 victory.

 328.

 329.
With its win on Tuesday afternoon, Michigan advanced to 24-21 on the year and now owns a five-game winning streak. After a lengthy homestand, the Wolverines will head out on the road, albeit for a short trip, to East Lansing to take on Michigan State for three games.

 330.
Michigan State enters the weekend with a 19-22 record on the year and is coming off a loss against Notre Dame on Tuesday night. On offense, the Spartans are led by senior outfielder Jack Frank and junior outfielder Nick Williams. Frank currently leads the team in OPS, with a mark of 1.036 on the year, and also has seven homers and 17 stolen bases. Williams currently has a .943 OPS and four homers.

 331.
Nick Powers and Joseph Dzierwa have been Michigan State’s horses on the mound this year, leading the team with 66.1 and 63.0 innings pitched, respectively. It hasn’t been the strongest of seasons for Powers, as he is currently sporting a 4.88 ERA and 1.31 WHIP on the year. Dzierwa has been slightly better, posting a 4.00 ERA this season, while striking out 67 batters.

 332.
When Michigan takes the field against the Spartans this weekend, it will be looking to continue climbing the conference standings with another series win. The Wolverines have yet to lose a series in conference play this year and currently sit in fifth place in the Big Ten. Another big weekend can also help the Wolverines as they continue to make a late push for a spot in the NCAA tournament at season’s end.

 333.
Weekend Schedule

 334.
Game 1: Friday, May 3, 6 p.m.

 335.
Game 2: Saturday, May 4, 3:30 p.m.
