20.
Returning Raider Nation’s questions for the week

We’re a week removed from the 2024 NFL Draft and, in typical Las Vegas Raiders’ fashion, the draft came with some controversy. The Raiders did not take a quarterback last weekend and went with a ‘best player available’ approach in the first round by selecting Georiga tight end Brock Bowers a year after using a second-rounder on Michael Mayer.

 21.
That’s led to some questions about what Las Vegas’ offense will look like moving forward, leading us into this week’s mailbag.

 22.
Question: Will the Raiders’ offense by a hybrid this season; 11, 12 personnel, four wide, etc.?

 23.
Answer: With how much capital they’ve used at tight end, I’d imagine we’ll see the Raiders use more 12 personnel than anything else. How often they deviate from that will depend on what role the coaching staff sees Tre Tucker playing. If the staff views Tucker as just a deep threat, then their usage of 11 personnel will decrease and be more of a third-down package.

 24.
On a similar note, unless Michael Gallup or someone else emerges as a quality fourth wide receiver, we probably won’t see Las Vegas use much 10 personnel next season. They might line up in four-wide formations but with Bowers in the slot since he’s a unique route-runner for the position.

 25.
The Raiders don’t have much depth at wide receiver so I don’t think they’ll run a lot of traditional four-wide sets, barring Gallup or another wideout stepping up in training camp and the preseason.

 26.

For clarity, personnel groupings refer to what positions the players on the field are listed as and not necessarily where they line up in the formation. So, if Bowers and lined up as a slot receiver, he’d still count as a tight end when it comes to the personnel (11, 12, 22, etc.) group.

 27.
The only variance would be if the defense wants to treat Bowers like a wide receiver, but that would be specific to that defense/team. What I mean by that is even if Bowers is in the game, the defense will treat it as if the Raiders are in 11 or 21 personnel instead of 12 or 22 and stay in their nickel or dime package rather than swapping out a defensive back for a second or third linebacker.

 28.
Q: Do you see the Raiders going after a fullback like these other Kyle Shannahan offenses or do you see us using Brock in the backfield?

 29.
A: Luke Getsy did carry a fullback with the Chicago Bears last season, Khari Blasigame. However, Blasigame took fewer than 200 snaps last season and a little less than half were at fullback, according to Pro Football Focus. So, the position isn’t a big part of Getsy’s offense or at least it wasn’t last year.

 30.
Bowers will probably used in the backfield similarly to how the San Francisco 49ers and Shannahan get Kyle Juszczyk involved in the passing game. The Georgia product has experience operating out of the backfield in college and putting him in motion to get a head of steam can help with his run blocking.

 34.
Brock Bowers

 35.

 36.
Part of what makes Bowers such a unique offensive weapon is that he can be used in so many different ways, this being one of them. To clarify, I still think his primary role will be as an in-line tight end and slot receiver, so he likely won’t be used as a fullback at the same volume as Juszczyk, just on similar concepts as a change of pace.

 37.
Maybe Las Vegas brings in a blocking fullback like Jakob Johnson, but I don’t think they need to since someone like Johnson would play a small role in the offense.

 38.
Q: Any positions you see the Raiders targeting after the draft? Do you think they are waiting for some June 1 cuts?

 39.
A: On a similar note, I could see them going after one of the available veteran cornerbacks, like Stephon Gilmore, Steven Nelson or Xavien Howard. At this stage in free agency, neither of them should be terribly expensive so it turns into a ‘Why not?’ situation.

 40.
They could be waiting to see who gets let go after June 1 to make a move, however, there probably won’t be too many notable players available since teams can use the post-June 1 designation and let the player go at the beginning of the offseason in March. For example, Las Vegas used a post-June 1 designation on Jimmy Garoppolo, allowing him to sign with the Los Angeles Rams.

 41.
A trade over the summer could happen though. The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov listed cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and James Bradberry as ‘surprise’ players who could get traded after the draft.

 42.
According to Over The Cap, the New Orleans Saints would save just under $4 million — but take on about $10.6 million in dead cap — by dealing Lattimore after June 1. Is that savings worth it? Maybe not, but they did just use a second-round pick on Kool-Aid McKinstry.

 43.
Bradberry’s contract is structured similarly, just with smaller figures — $1.2 million in savings with $3.1 in dead money, per OTC — and the Philadelphia Eagles spent their first two picks on corners last weekend. Also, Bradberry played for Patrick Graham with the New York Giants.

 44.

 45.
MichaelMatto

 46.

What's your take on the CB situation? Steven Nelson seems like the best short-term bang for your buck FA option to me--he's been consistent the last few years while Gilmore and Howard have had steady declines. No idea what's going on with Adoree’ Jackson... Any thoughts on TT's thoughts?

 47.

 48.
A: I agree that Nelson would be a good option. Gilmore isn’t the player he used to be, but he’s still solid with a 71.2 PFF grade and 11 combined interceptions and PBUs last season. Out of those three, I’m the most skeptical of Howard with his injury history, and the same goes with Adoree’ Jackson.

 49.

 50.
Jososi

 51.

 52.
It seems to me that they addressed most positions adequately. However, I still sense a hole at RT and CB. There seems to be a couple of FA CB options out there. Yet they don't seem to be in a hurry to address it.

 53.

 54.
Do you think they will? And if so, why are they waiting?

 55.

 56.

 57.
A: I got the question about why the Raiders haven’t signed a corner a few times.

 58.
It could be because they want to see if someone gets cut or if they can get a trade done next month. Also, the front office might want to wait until they get the cap relief from Grappolo’s contract. Granted, the Raiders have plenty of space now, assuming those free agents’ contract demands aren’t too high.

 59.
I’m not saying I agree with this and I’d like them to sign a veteran corner, but I could see Telesco and Pierce being happy with the cornerbacks they have despite what everyone else thinks about the position. I’m saying it’s true, but it could be a reason for the inactivity.

 60.
On a similar note, I do feel that TT and AP are confident with Thayer Munford Jr. at right tackle. Munford has been solid in his role over the last two years and the free-agent options aren’t great at that spot.

 61.

 62.
AAAA54

 63.

Have you heard what compensation teams were asking to move up into the top 3 and top 10 and what teams were offering to move up(but didn't get accepted, obviously) Thanks!

 64.

 65.
A: According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Giants and Minnesota Vikings tried to move up to No. 3. New York offered New England the sixth pick and sixth-rounder this year and next year’s first while Minnesota was willing to give up three firsts; Nos. 11 and 23 and their 2025 first-rounder.

 66.
Q: If Aidan O’Connell gets the starting job at QB do you think Antonio Pierce will give him a little more freedom this go around? Wanted to know because hearing reports that AP told him not to take certain risks last year.

 67.
A: Typically, when a young quarterback gets more starting experience, he gets more trust and freedom from the head coach and offensive coordinator. So, I would think O’Connell would be able to gamble a little more if he wins the job, but that depends on how confident Pierce and Getsy are in him, which is the unknown variable in this equation.

 68.

 69.
Mark Davis' hair

 70.

Why is folks assume minshew is going to be the starter this upcoming season? If you look at his salary for this year alone, he's getting paid backup money (albeit high end backup money but still). PFF scored AOC as the better player between the two. Given the topsy turvy season the raiders had with the coaching staff, shouldn't AOC be the favorite to be the week 1 starter? Lastly, who do you have being the week 1 starter and why?

 71.

 72.
A: I think a big part of it is Gardner Minshew is the new guy so people gravitate toward him because it’s something different, especially since he’s a veteran with starting experience. Also, the $10 million of incentives in Minshew’s contract are likely tied to starts/playing time, and Pierce has said it’s going to be an open competition, so there going to be people in both player’s corners.

 73.
Personally, O’Connell is my pick to win the job at this point. I think he has more potential and upside but, obviously, it’s not like he blew me or anyone else away last season. So, I’m not going to confidently say that he will win the job.

 74.

 75.
Bleed Silver and Black Blood

 76.

Ignoring need, how do you evaluate a top tier lineman like Fuaga and a top tier TE like Bowers and choose between them, again, ignoring team need? Thanks.

 77.

 78.
A: Ignoring need, Bowers is the better player between him and Taliese Fuaga. Positional value would favor a right tackle over a tight end but that’s the beauty of Bowers, he can do more than a traditional tight end. I would have liked and been happy with Fuaga at 13, but I really like what Telesco did by adding a dynamic playmaker and getting Jackson Powers-Johnson to help the offensive line.

 79.

I know I didn’t talk about Bowers at all and only touched on Powers-Johnson a little bit heading into the draft, but that’s primarily because I didn’t think the Raiders would have a chance at getting either player when they did. Also, I assumed they would opt for a need in the first round but, lesson learned, Telesco is a bit of a wild card which isn’t a bad thing.

 80.
After heavily diving into his tape this past week, I’m excited about what Bowers can bring to the team.

 81.

 82.
That’ll do it for this week’s mailbag. In his first season, he had 15 sacks after being drafted in the top ten of the 2011 NFL draft.

 130.
After that season, things went downhill for Smith, haunting his progress. He has had his trials and tribulations during his career. He was in and out of the NFL, dealing with issues off the field that kept him from reaching his highest potential.

 131.
With his NFL career behind him, Aldon Smith wants to give back and help young players avoid following his path. He will be mentoring the Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars this season. Jacob Infante of Windy City Gridiron has the story of Smith's new project.

 132.

After a release from prison in 2023, Smith retired from football and started a new brand by the name “I.M. Loading…” The “I.M.” part of the platform stands for “Intelligent Movement,” indicating that the more intelligent moves you make in life, the more likely you are to become the future person you want to be. The “Loading” aspect will either be a podcast or documentary surrounding his story and is meant to represent the fact that we, as human beings, always have room to grow.

 133.
It is great to see Smith give back after all the issues he has faced recently. Hopefully, players can learn from their mistakes and have long careers in Las Vegas.

 163.
The pair of undrafted free agents can vie for QB3 role behind Aidan O’Connell, Gardner Minshew

The 2024 NFL Draft came and went and the Las Vegas Raiders didn’t deem it fit to select a quarterback prospect with any of their selections over the course of the three-day event.

 164.
After witnessing the free-for-all and run of six quarterbacks taken before they could even pick at No. 13 overall, perhaps that was a wise overall choice by the Silver & Black. Even though the team did scout the upper echelon signal callers leading up to the draft extensively, the Raiders just weren’t in reach to snag one.

 165.
Instead of trading draft capital away to move up and select a highly touted quarterback prospect and without one falling to Las Vegas, general manager Tom Telesco and head coach Antonio Pierce went the best player available (BPA) route and went about their merry way adding more talent to the Raiders roster.

 172.

 173.
As the draft went it’s course, the Raiders didn’t deem any other draftable signal caller worthy of one of their selections, as the team didn’t believe any of the other prospects could push any of the quarterbacks currently on the roster. And while none of Las Vegas’ eight draft picks were a signal caller, the team did add one rookie to the crew after the draft — South Alabama’s Carter Bradley.

 182.

 183.
With the son of former Raiders defensive coordinator and current defensive boss for the Indianapolis Colts Gus Bradley in tow, the Raiders have four signal callers in the quarterback room: Aidan O’Connell, Gardner Minshew, Anthony Brown Jr., and Carter Bradley.

 184.

O’Connell — a 2023 fourth-round pick that started 10 games for Las Vegas this past season — and Minshew — a free agent addition who started 13 games for Indianapolis in 2023 — are expected to duke it out for the starting quarterback role in camp. The winner becomes QB1 while the runner-up gets QB2 duties. And that gives both Brown and Bradley a fighting chance to make a go of becoming QB3 for the Raiders.

 185.
Why the hubbub over a spot that doesn’t tend to have an impact?

 186.
I hear you.

 187.
Third-string quarterbacks tend to be inactive on game days and often earmarked with the emergency designation that allows them to dress and enter the game if either the starter or direct backup become unavailable to play. And neither Brown or Bradley appear to be imminent challengers to either O’Connell and Minshew, thus reserve quarterback is the duo’s likely destination — either on active roster or on practice squad.

 188.
But the third-string quarterback can play the role of scout team signal caller that runs the opponent’s plays leading up to game day. And while O’Connell and Minshew showed they’re both durable in 2023, a team never knows what happens any given game or week and having depth at the all-important quarterback position is a necessity.

 189.
The quality of depth will emerge as the Raiders engage in offseason team activities (OTAs) and camps as they prep for 2024.

 190.
On the surface, of the four quarterbacks, Brown brings athleticism to the table that O’Connell, Minshew, and Bradley don’t offer — functional mobility. While Brown did clock an unofficial 4.71-second 40-yard dash at Oregon’s Pro Day, he is the only “true” dual-threat in Las Vegas. O’Connell may have clocked in a tick faster in his 40 at Purdue’s Pro Day — 4.70 — he’s more of the pure pocket passer/cement shoes status. Minshew offers movability but not to the level of Brown, and Bradley is an immobile type like O’Connell.

 191.
In terms of throwing arm, however, both Brown and Bradley are trailing O’Connell and Minshew — big time. And it’s due largely to being wildly inconsistent.

 192.
Brown can thread and zip the ball in there with velocity, ditto for Bradley, but the pair have maddening instances where their throws are pro-quality on some throws, then junior varsity-quality during other passes. Bradley in particular, is an intelligent prospect and knows where the ball should go, getting it there is in question. His arm limitations will dampen his production in the NFL. Against bigger, experienced, and faster pro athletes, Bradley’s accuracy and lack of throwing his receivers open will jump out very quickly.

 193.
Take out this dart from Bradley at the Senior Bowl below. It’s a very nice thread-the-need dart, but at the next level, that’s either broken up or taken the other direction.

 194.

 195.

 196.
Carter Bradley had my favorite throw from Senior Bowl week. pic.twitter.com/t4sSzYxw7Z
— Marcus Johnson (@TheMarcJohnNFL) April 28, 2024
 197.

 198.
 199.
 200.

 201.
Of course, the Raiders could add more talent to the quarterback room like a veteran who can make both Brown and Bradley moot. Especially come June 1 when the designation for Jimmy Garoppolo hits the team’s books and an additional $24 million or so of cap space becomes available to Las Vegas.

 202.
Yet, the work-in-progress nature of Brown and Bradley isn’t detrimental to the Raiders at this point. That’s the type of quarterback that makes sense as a third stringer. That’s how O’Connell began his career in Las Vegas before ascending to starter when Antonio Piece was given the reins over Josh McDaniels as head coach. The Raiders’ current coaching staff — offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, primarily — will get to develop and tinker with not only Brown and Bradley, but also O’Connell and Minshew.

 203.
In Brown’s case, the 25 year old does have NFL games under his belt starting a single contest while playing in another during his stint with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022. For Bradley, the 24 year old is a coach’s kid and got insight and knowledge from veteran QB Philip Rivers.

 204.
The battle for QB1 will take the spotlight and rightfully so. But the overall pecking order at signal caller is important. And may the best claim jobs.

Brock Bowers was a highly touted coming out of Georgia and should help elevate the Raiders offense.

 226.
However, Raider Nation has heard this all before. Since 2018, the Raiders have had nine first-round picks. The only ones on the roster are Kolton Miller and recently drafted Tyree Wilson. It has led to the Raiders struggling to get over the top as genuine playoff contenders.

 227.
According to Jason from Over The Cap, the Raiders have had one of the worst rates in the NFL since 2018. Las Vegas has picked up a deficient 14.3% of its options, tied for fourth-lowest in the NFL. The only positive is that they are not last, which you figured they would be.

 228.
It is Tom Telesco's job to turn this around, and he started with a player who is expected to be a star. Hopefully, he can change around the awful aura around the Raiders of successful first-round picks.

 260.
Diving into the 3rd-round pick’s game

In the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Las Vegas Raiders addressed their offensive line by selecting Delmar ‘DJ’ Glaze out of Maryland. Glaze is an interesting prospect because while he has a strong track record in pass protection at offensive tackle, his traits suggest he’d be better suited as a guard at the next level.

 261.
For example, the former Terripan earned pass-blocking grades from Pro Football Focus in the mid-80s and only gave up 32 pressures on over 1,000 opportunities over the last two seasons. However, he lacks some foot speed/quickness which can lead to short corners around the edge.

 262.
Also, Glaze shows some promise on double teams, down blocks and as a puller in the running game, as the clips below highlight.

 263.

 264.

 265.
Nice double team here from DJ Glaze #Raiders pic.twitter.com/zT3taud1rb
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) May 3, 2024
 266.

 267.
 268.
 269.

 270.
Maryland runs counter here which puts Glaze and the left guard on a double team against Illinois’ 4i-technique defensive end lined up in the B-gap.

 271.
While his pad level isn’t perfect at the point of contact, Glaze has decent knee bend to help maintain a powerful base. He also does a solid job of using his hands and upper body strength to get a leverage advantage on the defender which, combined with some assistance from the guard, allows him to stand up the defender.

 272.
Glaze then keeps his feet moving through contact and uncoils his hips to get several yards of vertical displacement on the end to the point where the end is pushed to the second level of the defense. That makes it easier for the offensive linemen to pick up the backside linebacker and spring the running back for a few more yards.

 273.

 274.

 275.
Nice job by DJ Glaze to help collapse the 3-tech on the double #RaiderNation pic.twitter.com/g9jmxEQwun
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) May 3, 2024
 276.

 277.
 278.
 279.

 280.
This is a similar rep as the Terrapins run counter but has the backside guard and tackle pull with an inverted read-option action going on in the backfield. Also, Ohio State has a different front with a 3-technique defensive tackle instead of the 4i-tech end seen above. While it’s still a double team, that allows Glaze to turn this into more of a down block.

 281.
Right before contact, he gets hip-to-hip with the guard so the defensive tackle can’t split the double team. Then, we see another good example of the third-round pick bending his knees, maintaining a powerful base and uncoiling his hips after contact to generate some movement on the defender.

 282.
Glaze effectively kicks the defensive tackle out of the tackle’s gap, which creates a wide rushing lane for the quarterback to run through and pick up a chunk gain on the ground.

 283.

 284.

 285.
Great pad level and leg drive from DJ Glaze to finish the block #Raiders pic.twitter.com/OudGnSJaJU
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) May 3, 2024
 286.

 287.
 288.
 289.

 290.
In the clip above, Maryland runs inside split zone with our subject on the backside of the play. Something that stands out about his game is he has a pretty quick get-off which helps eliminate the defensive tackle’s pre-snap alignment advantage since the defensive tackle is lined up inside of Glaze.

 291.
From there, it’s more of the same from what we’ve already seen; good knee bend (really good pad level this time), upper body strength and leg drive to help create a rushing lane. While the defensive tackle’s feet get tangled with the linebacker’s, this is a nice finish from Glaze as he stays engaged and ends the rep with his man on the ground.

 292.

 293.

 294.
Nice job by DJ Glaze to kick out the LB while pulling#Raiders pic.twitter.com/ygUkyudjHP
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) May 3, 2024
 295.

 296.
 297.
 298.

 299.
Back to counter on this play, but Glaze is on the backside where he gets to pull this time.

 300.
He does need to pivot off of his outside foot instead of false-stepping (compare him to the left guard) which will help get to the landmark faster. That being said, Glaze does get there with enough time to avoid getting beat inside by the linebacker, it will just be more difficult to do that at the next level without cleaning up that technical flaw.

 301.
From there though, it’s another great example of Glaze using good technique at the point of attack to widen the backer out of the gap. He even finishes with the backer getting blocked out of the screen.

 302.

 303.

 304.
Like how DJ Glaze resets his base and anchors after contact in pass pro here #Raiders pic.twitter.com/oA9GkVFFTY
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) May 3, 2024
 305.

 306.
 307.
 308.

 309.
Moving onto a couple of reps in pass protection, the sideline angle is included here to get a good view of Glaze setting his base and anchoring in pass protection.

 310.
Jack Sawyer, the Buckeye’s defensive end, would have been drafted this year had he declared instead of going back to school and is a good power rusher. Sawyer has a nice long-arm move that he can put tackles on their heels with, which is what he tries to do to Glaze.

 311.

However, Glaze survives the initial contact and resets his base to avoid losing too much ground. Also, he does a good job of using his inside hand to pin Sawyer’s arm down, which helps him defend against and stop the inside pass rush move.

 312.
Granted, he’ll be going up against bigger defensive linemen but reps like this one are encouraging if Glaze ends up sliding inside to guard at the next level.

 313.

 314.

 315.
DJ Glaze has a nice get-off and does a good job of pinning rusher's inside arm down in pass pro #RaiderNation pic.twitter.com/zJxWqlJHe9
— Matt Holder (@MHolder95) May 3, 2024
 316.

 317.
 318.
 319.

 320.
We’ll end with one more quality rep in pass protection.

 321.
Again, the Maryland product’s get-off stands out as he quickly gets out of his stance to reduce the space between him and the pass-rusher. He’s also patient to avoid over-setting, putting himself in a position to stay in front of an inside move.

 322.

Glaze also has impressive grip strength to control the rusher, and we can see another example of him using his inside hand to pin the rusher’s inside arm down. The defender can’t even work a move on this rep, and the quarterback has a clean pocket to throw from and take a deep shot.

 335.
Raiders Draft 2024: Dylan Laube skillset makes him an ideal 3rd-down back

 341.

 342.
 343.
Sixth-round rookie can make veteran Ameer Abdullah expendable

Tom Telesco hinted early on, shortly after he was hired as Las Vegas Raiders general manager, that the team may to take a running-back-by-committee-approach instead having a bell cow back when Josh Jacobs was the unquestioned starter.

 344.
Based on the moves Telesco made at tailback, the committee is shaping up.

 345.
The Silver & Black’s chief personnel man went about adding more talent to the running back room by brining in veteran Alexander Mattison via free agency, re-upping veteran Ameer Abdullah, and drafting Dylan Laube out of New Hampshire in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft (208th overall). In total, Las Vegas has six running backs on the roster and each bring something different to the table.

 346.
Zamir White is the favorite to get early carries as the “starter” while Mattison and Abdullah offer change of pace skills and third-down back potential as pass catchers out of the backfield.

 347.
And then, there’s Laube (pronounced la-ow-bee). He’s a late-round prospect who is older at 24 years old, but he brings the most balanced skillset and production as not only a ball carrier and pass catcher, but he’s a special teams hound. And, if he develops in time, he can make Abdullah redundant and expendable.

 348.
By The Numbers: Dylan Laube

 349.

 350.
School: New Hampshire

 353.
Weight: 206 pounds

 354.
2023 Stats: 160 carries, 749 yards, 9 touchdowns; 68 receptions, 699 yards, 7 touchdowns

 355.
Career Stats: 556 carries, 2,773 yards, 29 touchdowns; 171 receptions, 1,791 yards, 14 touchdowns; 90 kick returns, 2,027 yards, 2 touchdowns; 34 punt returns, 426 yards, 2 touchdowns

 357.

 358.

 359.
Hey Raider Nation:

Your new RB Dylan Laube - certified slot fade freak. @sickpodraiders @dylan_laube pic.twitter.com/HAYat98Da9
— John “Draft” Vogel (@DraftVogel) April 27, 2024
 360.

 361.
 362.
 363.

 364.
Laube impressed at the Senior Bowl with his low center of gravity as a running back and his ability to run routes both out of the backfield and split out wide as a pass catcher. Displaying the shiftiness and smooth cuts and hands, the New Hampshire back showed that his small school production wasn’t a fluke.

 365.

The 5-foot-10, 206-pound running back is also has the work ethic that Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce loves and is a quick study. Laube’s versatility and progression will entail his role this coming season and beyond.

 366.
Offensive Fit

 367.
The expectations for Laube aren’t lofty like his higher draft classmen, however, with his ability to run and catch, the New York native has an opportunity to carve out snaps on offense. If Las Vegas does go with the committee approach, the usage of multiple backs will keep the running back stable fresh while keeping opposing defenses off balance.

 368.
But with veterans Mattison and Abdullah on the roster, Laube is likely to be buried on the depth chart unless he showcases better third-down back talents. Both the veterans offer similar carry and catch skills and have done so at the NFL level already. But the Raiders have preached competition across the board and Laude does have the skill set to be a third-down back and everyone will be new to offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s scheme. Perhaps Laube can assimilate quickly.

 369.
As a multidimensional running back who has the hand-eye coordination to catch passes while maintaining his full speed, Laube improved every season at New Hampshire as a pass blocker. That’s integral to be a third-down halfback in the NFL as if you’re not running routes, you’re helping the quarterback by buying them time to throw and keeping defenders at bay.

 370.
And it goes without saying: The jump to the pros from a small FCS school like New Hampshire can be quite the leap.

 371.
Laube may never be a full-time running back or receiver in the NFL, however, he has the suddenness and speed to take advantage of any work he gets — minimal as it may be.

 372.
Rookie Outlook

 373.
The place where Laube is most likely to make is mark in Year 1 is on special teams. Tom McMahon and his special teams crew are in need of explosive youngsters to jump into the mix and Laube is one of the the five Day 3 picks the Raiders made that have special teams experience in college.

 374.
Laube fits the profile as a core special teamer and that’s the quickest way to a 53-man roster across the league. At New Hampshire, Laube showcased impact return man production as both a kick returner and punt returner. Las Vegas needs more electricity from its return game and Laube should be in a good competition for both kickoff and punt return duties.

 375.
He also has the build, speed, and toughness to be on coverage units too. And Laude has the proper mindset as he embarks on his Raider journey.

 376.
“I think special teams is, if not the most important, the most underrated thing in a football game,” Laube said in a conference all after being drafted. “I take pride in playing running back and receiver. But also, special teams I feel like is what separates me from every running back in this class. I think me being able to do a bunch of different stuff like kick return, punt return, gunner, jammer, I think I’m able to do so many different things.”

 377.
Special teams is an excellent way to ingratiate Laube to the Silver & Black and prove he can produce against pro-level opposition and not just FCS competition.

 378.

 379.

Finalist for FCS Player of the Year.pic.twitter.com/2xn1n0qKnZ
— Nick Walters (@nickwalt) April 27, 2024

 405.
Raider Nation thinks there were plenty of draft steals

We’re still in draft mode and we spent this week’s Tuesday Community Question by asking our great community members who was their favorite Day 3 pick by the Las Vegas Raisers in last week’s 2024 NFL draft.

 406.

To recap, here are the five players the Raiders selected on Day 3 (rounds 4-7):

 407.

 408.
Mississippi State cornerback Decamerion Richardson

 409.
Ohio State linebacker Tommy Eichenberg.

 410.
New Hampshire running back Dylan Laube.

 411.
Air Force safety Trey Taylor.

 412.
Pittsburgh cornerback MJ Devonshire.

 413.

 414.
By the varied responses, it is clear the Raider Nation is fired up about these late-round choices by new Las Vegas general manager Tom Telesco.

 415.
All Saturday picks got some love. This could be a fun class to watch develop.

 416.
Here are some of your responses:

 417.

 418.
76raiders02

 419.

Easy, Trey Taylor.

 420.

 421.

 422.
TNRaiderfan

 423.

Decamerion Richardson, he has the size and speed and is a very good tackler, he needs to improve his coverage skills and IMO, can be a top CB in 3 years

 424.

 425.

 426.
1960AutumnWind

 427.

All of 3rd day picks were good, best draft since 2014.

 428.

 429.

 430.
Vila41

 431.

 432.
Eichenberg. He's the kind of downhill, run stopping LB the team needs. Could he be better in coverage? Of course, but that's not (at least initially) what he was brought here to do.

 433.

 434.
He's here to plug gaps and get runners down on likely run plays so we can get other teams into long down and distance situations (think 2nd & 8, 3rd & 7, etc.). You'll never rush the passer effectively unless you stop the run first. Our run defense should be good for the first time in a long time with this guy at the second level and Wilkins up front as the anchor.

 435.

 436.

 437.

 438.
njccc

 439.

E had an elite 3 cone grade, and the quickness translates to film from what I've seen. Even with the blitz, he was very effective. He's also my fav, but love the overall physical attributes of the DB's in general as well as the scatback.

 440.

 441.

 442.
MichaelMatto

 443.

Unlike most of these guys, Laube should see the field from day one and contribute, as a returner and special teamer. Not sexy, but very useful.

 444.

 445.

 446.
RaiderG

 447.

 448.
Louis Riddick seemed to really like Devonshire and DJ had a 5th round grade on him. With our big need there I hope he is the guy.

 449.

 450.
But I really think they all have a decent chance of making the team.
