33.
This morning I learned that Jack Hammer, whose work as a freelance blogger covering the San Francisco ‘49ers has appeared in The Press Democrat since July 2021, had pleaded no contest to a felony child-sex charge 18 years ago and was sentenced to 60 days of work release.

 34.
We have terminated his services effective immediately.

 35.
The incident, which involved a 17-year-old girl, occurred when Hammer, whose real name is Jeff Patterson, was a high school football coach and math teacher in Morgan Hill in the South Bay. In addition to his work-release sentence, he served five years of probation and had his teaching certificate permanently revoked. He was not required to register as a sex offender.

 36.
As a freelancer, Patterson did not represent The Press Democrat in a professional capacity. As an independent contractor, he was not an employee, and therefore was not subject to our employee background check process.

 55.
An inside look at Sunday’s Browns-49ers week 6 matchup at Cleveland Browns Stadium in Cleveland.

 56.
Marquee Matchup

 57.
Kyle Shanahan’s offense vs. Jim Schwartz’ defense

 58.
In baseball terms, Jim Schwartz has ownage on Kyle Shanahan.

 59.
The two have met up eight times as coordinators or head coaches. Schwartz has won seven of those meetings, including six in a row. If you include their matchup in 2021 when Schwartz was a defensive assistant in Tennessee, the win streak is seven.

 60.
In their nine prior meetings Schwartz has held Shanahan to just 15.8 points per game and allowed more than 20 points just once.

 61.
The Browns defense comes into this game allowing a league low 196 yards per game, 70 fewer than Baltimore and San Francisco who have allowed 266 per contest.

 62.
“They rush the passer every play and then react to everything else,” said Kyle Shanahan when asked about the challenge of facing Clevelang. “Myles Garrett combined with Schwartz’s scheme and the guys around him, it’s a problem. It’s obvious why they’re a top defense right now.

 63.
“When you have the D-Line they have, the downhill linebackers, you better have some good corners and they have very good ones. They play a lot of man-to-man coverage. They’ll mix in some zone. But, when you play that much man-to-man and you’re also the number one pass defense in the league, you’ve got to have some good corners.”

 64.
Jack’s Pick: The Cleveland defense will provide the toughest challenge to the 49ers this season.

 65.
For the Browns, their offense is a bigger issue. Cleveland will be without starting quarterback Deshaun Watson, running back Nick Chubb and left guard Joel Bitonio.

 66.
Unless San Francisco turns the ball over or doesn’t show up they will eventually wear down Cleveland and the 49ers will move to 6-0 on the season.

 67.
49ers 19 Browns 6

 68.
Four Downs

 69.
Ball Security: One thing that can nullify the 49ers talent advantage in this game is turnovers.

 70.
San Francisco has gone just 1-10 since the start of 2021 in games they have turned the ball over more than their opponents. When they don’t, the 49ers have compiled a record of 29-3.

 71.
As good as Cleveland’s defense has been through the first four weeks, they have forced just 3 turnovers. Meanwhile their offense has turned the ball over at least once in each game this season.

 72.
I can see for Myles: The Browns defense is led by pass rusher Myles Garrett. The defensive end has recorded 5.5 of Cleveland’s 12 sacks and hit the opposing quarterback 13 times.

 73.
Garrett moves around the formation, but 121 of his 166 snaps have come while lined up on the right side of the defense. If this pattern holds on Sunday, Garrett will spend most of the day working against All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams. The veteran left tackle has allowed just four pressures and four hurries on 162 pass blocking snaps.

 74.
Mr. Irrelevant: With a win on Sunday, Brock Purdy would have the second most consecutive wins to begin a career in NFL history with 11. The record is currently held by former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Been Roethlisberger who won his first 15 starts.

 75.
The second-year quarterback has broken several records this season and could pass another in Cleveland.

 76.
Purdy has gone 236 passes since throwing an interception in the third quarter of a 49ers win over Las Vegas on January 1. He is just 14 passes away from breaking Alex Smith’s franchise record of 249 passes.

 77.
Cleveland’s lone interception this season came when safety Grant Delpit picked off Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett in the first quarter of a 26-22 loss.

 78.
All-Pro Fred: Fred Warner has recorded 674 tackles in his career. He needs just two tackles on Sunday to move ahead of NaVorro Bowman for the fourth most tackles in franchise history.

 79.
Warner will have ample opportunity against a run heavy Cleveland offense.

 80.
The Browns 32.8 rushing attempts per game is tied for fourth most in the league.

 81.
Cleveland lost star running back Nick Chubb for the season with a knee injury during their week 2 loss at Pittsburgh. Over the last two games they have turned to Pierre Strong, Jerome Ford and Kareem Hunt and averaged just 3.1 yards per rush attempt.

 106.
In a twist, it could be Shanahan’s defense which proves to be the difference on Sunday.

 107.
Cleveland will likely be without starting quarterback Deshaun Watson on Sunday. The veteran quarterback missed the Browns last game on October 1 with a shoulder injury and has yet to practice.

 108.
If Watson is unable to go all signs point towards Cleveland moving to P.J. Walker.

 146.
Deshaun Watson could miss his second consecutive game. This has led head coach Kevin Stefanski to name P.J. Walker as the number two quarterback. Walker is currently on the Browns practice squad. He made seven starts for Carolina from 2020-2022 and has completed 57.5 percent of his career passes with five touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

 147.
The other option at quarterback is rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson who started for the Browns in a 28-3 loss to the Ravens back on October 1. The rookie went 19-of-36 for 121 yards and three interceptions.

 163.
During a segment Monday morning on “Get Up” Orlovsky told the panel, “If Jones was in San Francisco, he would be playing like Brock Purdy.”

 164.
San Francisco tight end George Kittle was asked about the comments during an interview with KNBR’s “Murph and Mac” Show on Tuesday morning.

 165.
“I saw that this morning. That’s disrespectful to Brock Purdy,” said Kittle. “I think Mac Jones is a fine quarterback. Currently what Brock’s doing, you look at his stats, just watch the tape. Just watch him move in the pocket, watch some of the throws he’s making. It’s phenomenal.”

 166.
Taking Kittle’s advice, let’s take a look at the tape of Purdy’s performance during the 49ers 42-10 win over Dallas on Sunday night.

 167.
First Quarter, 1st and 10 at Cowboys 19

 168.

 169. https://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Purdy-move-TD-to-Kittle-1.mp4

 170.
This is a terrific example of what Brock Purdy adds to the 49ers offense.

 171.
Feeling pressure off the right side, the quarterback steps up and slides to his right to escape the pocket. Keeping his eyes downfield the entire time, Purdy sees George Kittle come open in the endzone and in stride delivers a perfect strike to the tight end for the 49ers first touchdown of the game.

 172.
Third Quarter, 1st and 15 at 49ers 20

 173.
https://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Purdy-to-Aiyuk-Middle.mp4

 174.
On the opening possession of the second half we see an example of Purdy’s anticipation and ability to layer throws over an underneath defender.

 175.
Purdy recognizes the Cowboys rolling into cover two and knows the middle of the field behind Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch will be open. The quarterback gets the ball up and over the outstretched hand of Vander Esch hitting Brandon Aiyuk in stride for a gain of 23 yards.

 176.
Third Quarter, 3rd and 4 at 49ers 49

 177.
https://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Purdy-to-Aiyuk-Corner.mp4

 178.
Purdy steps up into the pocket and delivers a strike to Brandon Aiyuk who is running a deep out.

 179.
This play shows a couple of things. First, it shows Purdy’s ability to step into the pocket and make a downfield throw outside the numbers. Second, is Purdy’s arm strength. If you look closely, you will notice Purdy isn’t able to step into this throw. He uses the rotation of his hips and shoulders to generate the power needed to get the ball to the receiver for a gain of 41 yards, but the play is called back due to a hold.

 180.
Third Quarter, 3rd and 14 at 49ers 39

 181.
https://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Purdy-to-Deebo.mp4

 182.
The 49ers are running a Dagger concept. This has Jauan Jennings running a vertical route up the middle and Deebo Samuel running a deep in.

 183.
Purdy recognizes Dallas is in cover 2 requiring Leighton Vander Esch to carry Jennings deep down the middle. Purdy knows the deep in to Samuel is open and hits the receiver in stride for a gain of 42-yards.

 184.
What makes this play noteworthy is Purdy’s diagnose the coverage and get the ball out of his hand quickly. Notice how Purdy begins his throwing motion while Samuel is still running vertically at the Cowboys 48 and the receiver makes the catch in the middle of the field at the Cowboys 38. Dallas had no chance to stop this play.

 185.
Third Quarter, 3rd and 2 at Cowboys 10

 186.
https://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Purdy-to-Kittle-TD-3.mp4

 187.
Working off play action, Purdy show subtle pocket movement by sliding to his left away from pressure and drops the pass in to George Kittle for their third touchdown connection of the game.

 188.
Bonus Play

 189.
https://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Purdy-to-Kittle-Corner-Giants.mp4

 190.
This throw from Purdy against the New York Giants needed to be included. It is a perfect example of what Kittle was referring to about Purdy.

 191.
Purdy quickly recognizes the Giants blitz. He buys himself time by quickly gaining depth and sliding to his left to get away from the rush. Still moving as Kittle comes open, Purdy plants his back foot and delivers a layered strike to his tight end for a gain of 15.

 215.
The latest coming Monday morning from Dan Orlovsky of ESPN, “If Mac Jones was in San Francisco, he would be playing like Brock Purdy,” said the former NFL quarterback on Monday’s show.

 216.
George Kittle was asked about Orlovsky’s comment during an interview with the Murph and Mac show on KNBR Tuesday morning.

 218.
“I think Mac Jones is a fine quarterback. Currently what Brock’s doing, you look at his stats, just watch the tape. Just watch him move in the pocket, watch some of the throws he’s making. It’s phenomenal.”

 219.
Comments like the one made by Orlovsky are becoming all too common these days.

 220.
Almost every conversation around Purdy’s performance is tempered with, “you can drop any decent quarterback into that 49ers offense, and they’d be putting up those numbers.”

 221.
Every successful quarterback has done so with help from the players around them. Look no further than the supporting casts of Joe Montana and Steve Young.

 222.
While winning NFL MVP honors and five Super Bowls, the two had players such as Dwight Clark, Freddie Solomon, Fred Dean, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Ricky Watters and many more to work with.

 223.
One of the many traits Purdy shares with the former 49ers greats is his approach to the game. Kittle touched on this.

 224.
“I feel like I am with a lethal killer in my huddle,” said Kittle. “It’s really impressive, just his dedication to it, how he works.

 225.
“When he gets in the huddle he is like a different person. In the locker room he’s got this cheerfulness to him. But the second he gets on the field it’s all business.”

 245.
What Parson’s had an issue with wasn’t that he had been shut down to the point it appeared he had forgotten to board the Cowboys flight to Santa Clara for the game.

 246.
Instead, it was that Kittle had chosen to wear a shirt under his uniform with “F— Dallas” across the front similar to the one worn by former 49ers linebacker Gary Plummer for the 1994 NFC Championship Game.

 247.
“I just feel like he’s making it way more personal than it had to be,” said Parsons. “Kittle’s my guy, but I’m gonna say this: Laugh now, cry later.

 248.
“We got something for that, just trust. If we see them again, just trust. … If you wanna make it personal, we can make it personal.”

 249.
Deebo Samuel had a simple response to Parsons’ comments.

 250.
“It was already personal before the game started … 42-10, I don’t think you want to see us again. It might be a little worse,” said Samuel on “Up & Adams” Tuesday morning. “I don’t think he wants to see us again.”

 251.
San Francisco has now won three straight against Parsons and the Cowboys.

 252.
Sunday night’s victory was the most dominant of the three and the score could have been more lopsided. Kyle Shanahan pulled most of his starters just minutes into the fourth quarter and his team holding a 32-point lead.

 268.
With the entire NFL watching, the San Francisco 49ers put a beatdown on the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night at Levi’s Stadium.

 269.
Let’s hand out some game balls.

 270.
Game Ball 1: Brock Purdy

 271.
Brock Purdy completed 17 of his 24 pass attempts for 252 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. With the four touchdown throws, Purdy has now thrown at least two in a game eight times in his career. This ties him with Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner for most games with at least two touchdown throws in a player’s first ten career starts. The first quarter was a bit up and down for Purdy. After hitting all four passes on the opening drive, including a touchdown to George Kittle, he completed just two of his next six.

 272.
Purdy was nearly perfect in the second half. He completed 8 of 9 attempts for 119 yards and two touchdowns before being pulled from the game less than two minutes into the fourth quarter.

 273.
Since stepping into the lineup against Miami, Purdy has completed 70 percent of his passes (208-297) for 2,579 yards with 22 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

 274.
Game Ball 2: George Kittle

 275.
George Kittle recorded 3 receptions for 67 yards, all going for touchdowns. His three scores were a career-high and pushed him into second place in 49ers franchise history for tight ends. Kittle’s 34 receiving touchdowns are one more than Brent Jones.

 276.
Kittle’s three touchdown performance was the first for a 49ers tight end since Vernon Davis had three against the Houston Texans in 2009.

 277.
Game Ball 3: Colton McKivitz

 278.
Throughout the offseason there was talk about the 49ers offensive line being its Achilles Heel, especially after the team chose not to draft a tackle and stick with McKivitz. The cries grew louder after he allowed three sacks to T.J. Watt in the season opener at Pittsburgh.

 279.
Facing one of the best pass rushers in the NFL on Sunday night, McKivitz did not allow a hit on Brock Purdy. Neither Michah Parsons nor DeMarcus Lawrence were able to get to the quarterback.

 280.
In addition to the stellar pass protection, McKivitz helped open holes in the run game. He could be seen putting Lawrence on his back during McCaffrey’s touchdown run in the third quarter.

 281.
Game Ball 4: Fred Warner

 282.
Warner was all over the field against Dallas and showed why he is the best linebacker in the NFL today. He recorded eight tackles, sacked Dak Prescott, forced a fumble and came away with an interception.

 283.
On one play in particular Warner’s coverage took away the throwing lane for Dak Prescott. When the Cowboys quarterback left the pocket, Warner chased him down to record the sack. This is stuff you can’t teach.

 284.
Game Ball 5: Deommodore Lenoir

 285.
Lenoir is one of the most underrated players on the 49ers defense.

 286.
On Sunday night he was all over the Cowboys receivers. Lenoir was targeted in coverage 5 times, allowing just 2 receptions for 14 yards.

 287.
It was Lenoir who created the interception for Fred Warner early in the fourth quarter.

 288.
Lenoir had tight coverage on Michael Gallup who was running a slant. The 49ers cornerback was able to get his hand on the pass and the deflection went right to Warner for the turnover.

 304.
The 49ers just blew out the Dallas Cowboys to go to 5-0 on the season. San Francisco’s 42-10 win was reminiscent of the 45-14 thumping the 1981 team put on Dallas during the regular season on its way to the first Super Bowl title in franchise history.

 305.
Here are my grades.

 306.
Quarterback: A

 307.
Brock Purdy kept the October magic going as he ran his career record to 10-0 and helped the 49ers score over 30 points for the eight consecutive regular season game. Purdy finished 17-24 for 252 yards and a career-high four touchdowns.

 308.
The performance wasn’t perfect for Purdy, but he was close, especially after the first quarter. He completed 11 of 14 passes from the start of the third quarter until being pulled early in the fourth quarter.

 309.
Purdy capped off the opening possession by escaping pressure and moving to his right where he found Goerge Kittle for a 19-yard touchdown. He connected with Kittle a few possessions later for a 38-yard touchdown on a flea flicker. In the second half the two made it three touchdowns when Purdy found Kittle all alone in the endzone. His fourth touchdown came when he hit Kyle Juszczyk in the right flat from a yard out.

 310.
Running Back: B+

 311.
Dallas made stopping Christian McCaffrey a focal point of their plan, and while they held him to just 51 yards on 19 carries it wasn’t enough.

 312.
The 49ers ran the ball 41 times for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

 313.
McCaffrey helped keep Dallas off balance and added another 27 yards receiving. With Dallas pinning its ears back to get after Purdy, he took a screen pass from Purdy for a gain of 19.

 314.
Jordan Mason had a solid day when called upon. The second year back had several nice runs, capping off his performance with a 26-yard burst around the left side to close out the scoring. His physical running style is a nice complement to McCaffrey.

 315.
Deebo Samuel added 30 yards on five carries. The wideback showed his ability to make plays in the run game up the middle and around the corner.

 316.
Wide Receiver: A

 317.
Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings dominated the Cowboys defensive backs. All three had catches of at least 19 yards.

 318.
Aiyuk led San Francisco’s receivers with four catches on seven targets for 58 yards including a long of 23 yards. He was open for a couple others, but the throw was just off the mark. He’s been the 49ers top receiver this season.

 319.
Samuel had a long of 42 yards on a catch and run on a dagger route in the third quarter. He caught all three passes that came his way for 55 yards.

 320.
Jennings had just one catch, but it was a big one. Facing third and two, Jennings broke free for a 19-yard grab to move the sticks. The 49ers would score their fifth touchdown of the game a few plays later.

 321.
Tight End: A

 322.
George Kittle came into Sunday night without a touchdown this season.

 323.
He broke out against the Cowboys, leading the 49ers in receiving yards with 69 and scoring touchdowns on each of his three receptions.

 324.
San Francisco used two tight ends on three of its seven plays to open the second half, but it was a decoy. With Dallas expecting run, Kyle Shanahan called a pair of passes to gain 33 yards including a ten yard touchdown to Kittle.

 325.
Offensive Line: A+

 326.
All the talk this week was around the challenge the Cowboys pass rush presented.

 327.
It’s hard to imagine how the 49ers offensive line could have performed better. Dallas pass rushers Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence were held without a quarterback hit.

 328.
Purdy was sacked just once, on a blitz from Dallas safety Jayron Kearse.

 329.
In addition to protecting Purdy, the offensive line created holes in the run game. Anytime a team can run the ball 41 times for 170 yards it has been a good day up front.

 330.
Defensive Line: B+

 331.
Nick Bosa set the tone for the 49ers defensive line on the opening play of the game. The reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year ran down the line and blasted Cowboy running back Tony Pollard after a gain a just one yard.

 332.
The defensive front consistently pressured Dak Prescott throughout the game. This paid off with three interceptions in the second half. Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead shared a sack of Prescott and Kevin Givens also got home for one. Bosa, Armstead and Givens combined for nine hits on Prescott.

 333.
In addition to his sack, Givens hustle paid off with a fumble recovery in the second quarter deep in Dallas territory.

 334.
Linebackers: A+

 335.
Fred Warner is the best linebacker in the league. He recorded eight tackles against Dallas to go along with an interception, a forced fumble, sack, tackle for loss and a pass defensed.

 336.
The combination of Warner and Dre Greenlaw is dominant. The two linebackers fly around the field. Greenlaw finished with five solo tackles of his own. He also recorded a sack, pass defensed and two tackles for loss.

 337.
Not to be outdone, Oren Burks also had five tackles and intercepted Dak Prescott in the fourth quarter.

 338.
Defensive Backs: A

 339.
Except for a couple plays the 49ers secondary locked down the Cowboys passing game. Dallas receivers accounted for just eight receptions.

 340.
Charvarius Ward had a beautiful pass break up on a deep throw down the right sideline early in the game.

 341.
In the second half Deommodore Lenoir got his hand on the ball to break up a quick slant to Michael Gallup. The deflection bounced right to Fred Warner for an interception.

 342.
Tashaun Gipson got the 49ers turnover party started when he picked off a deep throw from Prescott intended for Brandin Cooks.

 343.
The only negative of the night was a 26-yard touchdown from Prescott to KaVonte Turpin that beat the coverage of Isaiah Oliver. Other than the one play, Oliver had a solid night with five tackles.

 344.
Special Teams: A

 345.
Jake Moody hit all six extra point attempts and did not kick the ball out of bounds on a kickoff.

 346.
Mitch Wishnowsky averaged 46.8 yards per punt. Twice he pinned the Cowboys inside their own ten with the help of rookie Ronnie Bell.

 347.
Ray-Ray McCloud’s 14-yard punt return in the second quarter set up the flea-flicker touchdown pass from Purdy to Kittle

 348.
Coaches: A

 349.
Kyle Shanahan’s offense looked like a machine when it marched 75 yards for a touchdown to open the game. The 49ers ability to get into the endzone in the first half has been the catalyst to the five game win streak to open the season.

 350.
Steve Wilks had his defense ready to go. They did not allow Dallas to record a first down on six of seven first half possessions. Then in the second half they took the ball away three times and the game was over about a minute into the fourth quarter.

I will provide updates and analysis throughout the game from the press box.

 366.
3:40 Former 49ers quarterback Trey Lance went through an extensive pregame workout. You can watch it by clicking here.

 367.
3:50 In case you missed it, here is my preview, prediction, and matchups to watch for in tonight’s game.

 368.
3:55 Inactive for the 49ers tonight are DE Randy Gregory, LB Jalen Graham, RB Elijah Mitchell, OL Nick Zakelj, QB Brandon Allen, TE Brayden Willis, DL Kalia Davis

 369.
4:05 Inactive for the Cowboys tonight are QB Trey Lance, S Israel Mukuamu, CB Eric Scott, OL Asim Richards, WR Jalen Brooks, TE Peyton Hendershot, DL Viliami Fehoko

 370.
5:15 There is a lot of blue inside Levi’s Stadium tonight. The Cowboys fans travel well.

 371.
5:20 Dallas won the toss and deferred. The 49ers will start on offense.

 372.
5:30 The 49ers offense with a machine-like 7 play, 75-yard drive to open the game. Christian McCaffrey with 3 carries for 12 yards, and Brock Purdy hit all 4 pass attempts including a 19 yard touchdown throw to George Kittle.

 373.
On the touchdown, Purdy felt a little pressure from DeMarcus Lawrence and escaped out to his right before finding Kittle.

 374.
Good protection from the 49ers offensive line on that opening possession.

 375.
5:35 Quick three and out by the 49ers defense. Nick Bosa with a good job coming down the line to stop Tony Pollard on first down, then Dak Prescott with a pair of overthrows. Drake Jackson had good pressure up the middle on the third down play.
