My version is not intended to replace theirs. My version is for people who cant go through their program for one reason or antother. I started using NIACIN and a SAUNA together, mush as dscribed in this book, before it ever came out. I was also using certian herbs and eating certian fruits. Their program (from the book I read) asks you to be with someone who has already gone through it. This presents a problem for many people, especially sice the book has been linked to Scientology. In my program, you can do this all by yourself, and cheaper ! their book is called.... <h2 class="r"><a class="l" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20070121225126/http://www.clearbodyclearmind.com/">Clear Body Clear Mind</a> </h2> We live in a chemically-oriented society. People in the United States are constantly subjected to chemical poisons including pesticides, illegal drugs and even preservatives from food. The residues from these poisons can stay in the system for years. They damage not only your health but your ability to think clearly. The program that is explained in Clear Body, Clear Mind is the only effective program that eliminates the devastating effects of drugs and toxins. Hundreds of thousands have done this program and live happier, more perceptive and aware lives as a result. This book provides a complete description of the New Life Detoxification Program developed by L. Ron Hubbard to remove residues from the body. It is the same technology that is used in the Narconon® drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. The program calls for you to take NIACIN, then sit in a sauna to sweat out the toxins that the niacin has released from your body. You have to take precaution, becuase with the amount of seating needed, you will loose many minerals and fatty acids. My version of this program is much shorter, and while it might not do quite as good a job, it is much safer, and easier to do, with much less stress on the body. I think my version comes fairly close to the results obtianed from their program as well. Note, this is a MUCH smaller list (and much cheaper) than the books. Many of the vitamins and minerals i will suggest you take MORE than the RDA. The RDA is a guide to how much you should have every day, and the RDA has been disputed by many reputable doctors. The RDA is a suggested DAILY intake, and since most of us do NOT get what we need, a short term high intake will not hurt you. I am not suggesting to take these levels for more than a week though. Many have said they way the RDA is structured, it recommends the MINIMUM amount you NEED to SURVIVE, not the OPTIMAL amount that can help you ! The amounts I suggest below are guides, and you can TWEAK them to your own use. Larger people may need a bit more, as well as people who have bad diets. I also have a suggested meal list, which will help you to reduce the amounts of vitamins and minerals you need for this program. Even with the list, I still suggest you take what I recomend below though. If you stay longer in the sauna, you will need more minerals also. I also VERY MUCH suggest you read the links to the vitamins, this will help you even when you are finished the program. 1) Niacin (vitamin B3) Make sure NOT to get time released Niacin You will need at least 20 for the first DETOX. Get the 100mg size, its around $3 for 100 count. Make sure its NOT Niacinamide ! 2) A sauna. Hopefully, you can use a gym, or someplace that has a hot tub, sauna, or steamroom. If you cant, then i dont suggest you go any further. I have turned the heater on in my bathroom, and run the hot water, mimicking a steam room, but you have to be able to get it HOT and keep it hot for at least an hour ! 3) <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20070121225126/http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mandrake">Mandrake root.</a> This makes you use the bathroom. Excreting waste is important. You can buy this online pretty cheap. I buy the root cut, and you take about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of it. Be careful, you should read up on mandrake before using it ! That said, I have used it 100's of times, with no bad effects, but if you take too much this can happen... <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20070121225126/http://www.totse.com/en/drugs/rare_and_exotic_drugs/mandrake.html">http://www.totse.com/en/drugs/rare_and_exotic_drugs/mandrake.html</a> remeber though, this guy took over 48x the amount you should take ! 4) Clacium, Magnesium, Vitamin D. You can buy these together which is best, or seperate. Personally, i do NOT like multivitamins, many of them do not get absorbed well. You shoud take double the amounts during the program of Calcium Magnesium, and vitamin D. this wont hurt you a bit short term. Cod Liver oil is high in D as well as vitamin A and fatty acids, and is highly suggested here. Recomended Magnesium ascorbate = 500mg to 1gram Recomended Calcium= 1g to 3grams Recomended <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20070121225126/http://www.vitamins-supplements.org/vitamin-D.php">Vitamin D </a>= 400 to 600 IU 5) Omega 3 fatty acids. Start taking these a couple of days before you start the program. 6) Vitamin C You will need to take at least 6,000 mg a day. This amount wont hurt you a bit, even long term, but feel free to bring it down to 2 grams a day, when the programs over. If you can get it with Rose Hiips, or Bioflavonoids, thats much better. Of course you can get the Bioflavonoids by eating the white parts inside oranges, lemons etc... 7) B complex. This isnt totally necisarry, but much suggested, as you will loose some B vitamins in the sweating process. 8) Mineral complex. You can try and get all the minerals you need seperately, but i suggest getting a complex, its easier. If you can, try and get the liquid, it absorbs easier. Colloidal Minerals if possible. If you do get the complex, the suggestion would be to take at the very least 1 dose per day, and recomended 2 to 3 doses a day. I like "tiger balm" but its hard to find. You will rub this on your skin i the sauna. (optional, but suggested) Its important to get the blood to the skin when you take the niacin, the Sweeds, used to hit each other with small braches with leaves on them I have actually rubbed a hair comb on my skin to get this objective. HERBS. A builder, cleaner, infection fighter. Breaks down poisonous carbon dioxide. Foods and Diet I am a vegetarian, but IF you HAVE to eat meat, eat very small amounts, and make it chicken, no red meat!. Fruit should be a BIG part of this program, eat plenty. Any fruit is OK, citrus is recomended. The white part on the inside of citrus fruits are very high in bioflavonoids. Greens !!! dark green lettuce is much better than iceberg, and spinach is very high in iron. Eggplant is even higher in iron than spinach ! Carrots are very high in beta-carrotene, a precurser to vitamin A. Shredded raw carrots are better, chew them well. Shreeded beets are great as well, and are good for your kidneys. NO SUGARS, keep the simple carbs very low as well, like white bread (just eat whole wheat, make sure it says whole wheat, or not bleached on the label) Brown rice is much better than white, no chocolate either ! potatoes are OK, use real butter rather than margerine though. No Milk or Ice Cream ! Some cheese is OK, but milk creates lots of mucus, not a goof thing here... EAT NUTS ! get your protein and fatty acids from nuts, best thing to do, is get a trail mix, or mix with different kinds, like wallnuts, cashews, pecans... EAT FISH ! high in vitamin D, and oils. Steamed broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage are all great ! Use extra virgin olive oil, or a little real butter. the grat thing is that salt is encourgaed, depnding on your restrictions (if any), and how long you stay in the sauna. Other spices are OK too. Try to eat lots of fiber and bulk, like salads. <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20070121225126/http://www.garlic-central.com/garlic-health.html">GARLIC, GARLIC, GARLIC !</a> if you dont eat LOTS of it, but some, its cheap and great to have around for lowering blood pressure, and overall health. Egyptians took garlic to leep them healthy. The sulfur content stops you from getting sick ! BEFORE YOU START... Check with your DOC, if you have high blood pressure, heart problems or the like. Do NOT take Mandrake if you are pregnant ! My version of this program is MUCH safer than the original though. With my program, you can go as many days as you like. My program only lasts 5 days IF you do it full term. There is a 3 day PRE-CLEANSE before the actual program (with NIACIN) starts. LETS GO ALREADY ! Pre-Cleanse. (PC) The first 3 days, you will follow the diet, and take herbs only. The cleanses the bowels, and removes the water soluble toxins forst. This reduces the stress on the body, since you dont have to take any niacin, or sit in a sauna. PC day 1 Take all of the vitamins and minerals, and follow the diet. Take 1/2 teapoon of Mandrake root. mandrake takes about 12 to 18 hours to work, by then you should have had 1-2 serious bowel movements. Eat good, dont overeat, but make sure you eat the proper foods, no sugars. Eat fruit, veggies and fiber only ! Do a 10 minute workout, and a 20 mins sauna. This is just to get you used to the sauna, it will also get a few of the toxins out of you, so we can start the program clean. PC day 2 REPEAT DAY 1, except the diet. Today, all you can have is fruit and veggies with 1 course of nuts, and 1 course of fish. Do not eat a lot of anything. You should go to bed hungry ! Drink the lemon water, take all the herbs and vitamins as in day 1 No need to workout , or sauna PC day 3 REPEAT DAY 2 No need to workout , or sauna Your Pre-Cleanse is over ! START the PROGRAM ! Main program day 1 Today, the diet should be exactly as PC DAY 2 NO MANDRAKE TODAY, lets take a break from that. Take all the other herbs though as in PC DAY 2 The other thing we will do today is excercise, take niacin, and sweat ! EXCERCISE BEFORE you start to exercise, make sure you HYDRATE, drink lemon water ! Lets GO.... You should do 3 sets of 20 reps of some kind of upper body training. Pushups are OK, and if you can do more, please do ! Do 2 sets of 20 situps (or best you can) Take 200mg of NIACIN NOW !!! (2 tablets) Do (at least) 20 mins of cardio-vascular excersice try for 30-35 Now its time to sit in the SAUNA (or hot tub or steam room). Right away, dont wait. The Niacin is at its peak. If you can, try and stretch your legs and arms while in the steam room, its important to keep the blood moving at this time. Try and stay in about 20 mins. This will depend on how hot it is, and how much YOU can take. Your body should give you signals if there is trouble on the way, listen to it ! When you need to take a break, do it, then put on the ICY HOT, or other warming salve like Tiger Balm. The break should not be more than 5 mins, but listen to your body ! Go back to the sauna for another 20 mins, and break again as needed. Hot tubs are hotter than saunas and you may not be able to stay as long, thats OK, stay as long as comfotable. Then, go back in when you can, hopefully, the break should not last more than 5 mins. Steam room temps are generally between sauna and hot tub temps. You should have at least 1 hour of sauna time (maybe 45 mins of hot tub time) Then , your DONE! Take a COLD shower or bath when you are finished. This closes your pores, and stops germs from entering them, as well as invigorating the skin ! Make sure you HYDRATE ! Drink the lemon water. Main program day 2 same as Niacin day 1, except, take 400mg of niacin You can eat more today as well, you dont have to go to bed hungry. No Mandrake today either. Main program day 3 same as Niacin day 1, except, take 700mg of niacin Eat normal, but watch WHAT you put in your mouth, dont overeat. Today, we will take 1/2 teaspoon of mandrake again. This is the last time, but we want to get all those pesky toxins OUT of your body. Main program day 4 Today is NO NIACIN ! Mandrake has been effectivly used to get rid of GALLSTONES, and other blockages as well. Take Mandrake 2 nights before you start the program. It will take about 24 hours for it to finish working. The injustice is called outsourcing and ARAMARK and ServiceMaster are two of its most heinous purveyors. ARAMARK and ServiceMaster both began their respective contracts with Houston Independent School District (HISD) under Dr. Rod Paige's Superintendence. ARAMARK was brought in to manage the Food Service Department and ServiceMaster, the Custodial and Maintenance departments of HISD. The two outsourcing agencies both have a long history of inequitable treatment of workers and fiscally unsound managerial practices. They have not made their endeavor in HISD an exception to this tradition. ARAMARK has severely cut our kitchen staff all over HISD and substitute kitchen staff has been eliminated almost completely. When one of the food service attendants is sick, the rest of the employees are forced to make up the work, without getting extra pay. Furthermore, many formerly full-time employees have been cut to four hours a day. Four hours is not enough to support one person, much less a single mother with three children. Do you want your tax dollars spent on paying people so little that they are forced to work two jobs? They have also affected the quality and quantity of the food that your children eat. Before ARAMARK was in place in HISD, the children were served a whole apple as part of their lunch; they are now served only half of one. Prior to ARAMARK, they were served the whole head of broccoli, now only the stems. Before ARAMARK they were served a variety of entrees, including many that were prepared and cooked in the school kitchen. Now most of the food comes pre-prepared and suffers from comparatively poor quality. Because of the diminished quality of the food, participation in school lunches has decreased and-to combat this dwindling participation-many schools have begun serving both pizza and hamburgers twice a week. Wouldn't you like for your children to be offered a variety of quality foods? They have also begun a program in many low-income schools where the children, most of whom are on free lunch (their meals are funded by the federal government), are served breakfast during class time. Before this program and at other schools the children that want breakfast at school are served before class. At these schools, the children are served in class regardless of whether or not they want the food. The food that is not eaten is thrown away and the district pays ARAMARK whether they eat it or not. This is a flagrant example of a private institution manipulating the system for their profits. To make matters worse, because the children are served breakfast during class time, time is being taken away from their studies. As stated before, this program is being introduced in schools that have a high ratio of low-income students, those schools that have historically tested lowest in academic performance. Therefore, the students that should be getting more class time are getting less. Another example of privatization within our schools is the appearance of progressively more vending machines on campus. Some schools even have them in the cafeterias, which is a violation of a regulation set forth by the Federal Department of Agriculture. The children purchase soft drinks or junk food in lieu of healthier alternatives, and again our children's health is sacrificed in the name of corporate profits. The ubiquitous logos on the machines also help to ensure that the new generation will continue to buy their products. ServiceMaster has engaged in their share of inequities, as well. During the last school year, the custodial and maintenance departments, both managed by ServiceMaster, lost a total of $2.8 million; to offset the loss, they laid off many custodians and maintenance workers alike. Instead of rehiring the devoted employees when more staff was needed for new schools and projects, they brought in outside contractors to fill the positions. Among these contractors is Aztec, who was brought in to fill the custodian positions at two new High Schools, West Side and Cesar Chavez. The district looked past Aztec's policy of not giving their employees a full forty-hour workweek so as to avoid paying health care. Some might find irony in that this inequitable treatment is going on in a school named after Chavez, a union leader and staunch advocate of worker's rights. ServiceMaster has also taken the responsibility of changing the air conditioner filters away from the maintenance department and given it to the custodial department. Changing the air filters in a large school is a somewhat labor-intensive job and, because the custodians already have a full workload, the task is postponed or, in some cases, never taken care of. Houston has one of the highest rates of asthma in the country and it seems that ServiceMaster is trying to make sure that it stays that way. Not only is this an inequity against the school employees, but this is also a case of profits taking precedence over our children's health. It is also relevant to point out that neither ARAMARK nor ServiceMaster has fulfilled what they were employed to do. Their respective contracts were first begun as a means to improve the financial status of the district; their contracts were not begun to correct an existing problem. HISD handled these matters internally without any problems before they began outsourcing. As a result of poor budget management, ARAMARK cost HISD $4.5 million over the past two school years and, as mentioned earlier, ServiceMaster cost the district $2.8 million over the past year. Despite the treatment of workers, ARAMARK and ServiceMaster are quite obviously inept in what they were employed to do. The contracts with ARAMARK and ServiceMaster were begun in 1997 and 1998, respectively. While they are both five-year contracts, they must be renewed yearly, as stipulated by state law. HISD Board Members, who are elected officials, will vote for the renewal or revocation of the contracts. Because of this, we have the ability to discontinue their contracts before the new school year starting in the Fall. Both ARAMARK and ServiceMaster's contracts were begun with Houston ISD under the administration of Dr. Rod Paige. He has since left his position as HISD Superintendent, to serve as the Secretary of Education under President George W. Bush, and we feel that his legacy of inequity should leave as well. Both of these corporate menaces have a long track record of inequitable treatment of employees, putting profits before people, and incompetence in budget management. As voting citizens of the city of Houston we CAN make a difference. Send a letter to your Board Member and tell him/her that the contracts with ARAMARK and ServiceMaster must be discontinued. Tell them that the problems of outsourcing far outweigh the benefits. Tell them that you refuse to vote for a Board Member that supports outsourcing. Tell them that you don't want your tax dollars supporting a corporation that thrives on the oppression of the people working in our schools. The practice of using public money for private profit is unacceptable and must be stopped! (Courtesy graphic) The ARAMARK Corporation, which has provided food services to the Pentagon for 30 years, is being replaced by the Navy Exchange Service Command, that has contracted with several organizations to establish a set of fast food restaurants throughout the building. The change, said Jeffrey A Keppler, senior food services specialist for the command, will bring a host of brand-name food proprietors to the Pentagon, giving people more choice in what they eat and drink. "We want to provide the standard for what people can get on the outside," Keppler said, explaining that under the new system employees won't have to leave the building to find their favorite food outlet. Familiar eateries scheduled to grace the building include McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Subway and Sbarro. Specialty snack shops like Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Au Bon Pain and Baskin Robbins will also be a part of the mix. Already established regional chains included that don't have a wide Washington presence include Togo's Great Sandwiches and Manchu Wok. Also in the Pentagon will be a series of in-house restaurants run by Compass Group EUREST, which provided food service at the Winter Olympics and serves the dining needs of such corporate entities as Microsoft and Southwest Airlines. These in-house restaurants will include The Fresh Grille, Trattoria, Market Carvery, Out Takes and Menutainment. The last entry is designed for those who like a little flourish with their nourishment. Menutainment will feature chefs whipping up multi-serving portions of stir-fry, pasta, paella and other concoctions in full view of customers. The wide variety of offerings provides more than just fast food, according to Keppler. "You'll be able to get fresh salads, meat, potatoes, gravy and green beans," he said. "We're hoping on picking up a lot of folks who have been brown bagging or going out to lunch," he added. The new outlets will replace existing cafeterias in the Pentagon. The Pentagon Dining Room along Corridor 10 will remain open, as well as several snack shops run by the Virginia Department for the Visually Impaired that are in the building. The new food service vendors have been hiring many ARAMARK employees, so Pentagon workers will still be seeing many of the familiar faces that have greeted them across food counters in the past. Some cafeterias will continue operating in their current format, with the Navy Exchange taking over management from ARAMARK, until the replacement facility is complete. Each outlet's pricing will be equivalent to what customers can find at the same outlet inside a 3- to 10-mile radius, Keppler said, adding the restaurants would be setting their own hours of operation. The restaurants will be set up in several distinct areas in the Pentagon. The largest collection -- including Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Subway, KFC, McDonalds, Market Carvery, Manchu Wok, Togo's, Menutainment, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks -- will be located in the Corridor 10 food court. A second grouping -- Out Takes, Market Carvery, Subway, KFC Express, Trattoria, Menutainment, The Fresh Grille and Au Bon Pain -- will be located in what is called the 234 food court. This portion of the new food service is scheduled to open first while the rest of the outlets will open gradually throughout the year. She's all over the place these days, it seems. She's shown up on TV shows. I see links to her blogs all over the place. I don't think you can call Taylor Marsh one of the great opinion shapers of our time, but she's definitely making an impact in certain circles. She seems to have a lot of oomph among Hillary supporters. Her blog offers a daily dose of crazed Obama bashing and gets hundreds of comments from Clinton true believers who echo her sentiments as if they were gospel. Who in the hell IS Taylor Marsh. I decided to find out. Strangely, this talk radio host and published author <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=taylor+marsh&amp;go=Go">doesn't have</a> a Wikipedia entry. Although I found several people wondering who she was, I found no <a href="http://www.taylormarsh.com/biography.php">bio</a> outside of the one she's provided at HuffPo and the one on her own website. I figured it was time for someone to find out something more than that about Taylor Marsh and/or to collect available information in one place. I'll be honest with you, though. I wasn't motivated by pure curiosity. I had an ax to grind. Day after day, I find the ramblings of Taylor Marsh and the ass-kissing dittoes of her Hillary-backing fan club more and more irritating. Her remarks are, in my estimation, another sympton of Hillary-induced soul cancer. I think Taylor Marsh sucks. Thus, I was sort of hoping to find out that Ms. Marsh is a completely unqualified, unimportant, silly hack who just happened to fall into an audience because she decided to pledge an undying allegiance to The Monster during a contentious primary process. Hey, like I said, I had an ax to grind. Guess what? I did discover that Taylor Marsh fails to meet the Pundit Worthy of Attention Threshhold. She is a wee hack with an audience. She does suck--at least on some level. However, she's also interesting. Believe it or not, I now have an admittedly bizarre newfound respect for her. The Taylor Marsh story has two parts. First, it cautions us to remember that having a slick blog and a knack for PR doesn't make someone smart, qualified, or credible. Second, it teaches us that anyone can command an audience for his or her opinions. The Taylor Marsh story is about fame for the foolish, attention for the mediocre, and how a kid from Missouri can somehow grow up to be an oft-cited resource among those with an interest in serious matters--even if she might not have any business sharing the stage with serious people. She claims that experience today, but the details are cloudy. Marsh herself says she wrote relationship columns, but tried to sneak politics into them until someone in the editorial department made her stop. Who in the hell IS Taylor Marsh. I decided to find out. Strangely, this talk radio host and published author <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=taylor+marsh&amp;go=Go">doesn't have</a> a Wikipedia entry. Although I found several people wondering who she was, I found no <a href="http://www.taylormarsh.com/biography.php">bio</a> outside of the one she's provided at HuffPo and the one on her own website. I figured it was time for someone to find out something more than that about Taylor Marsh and/or to collect available information in one place. I'll be honest with you, though. I wasn't motivated by pure curiosity. I had an ax to grind. Day after day, I find the ramblings of Taylor Marsh and the ass-kissing dittoes of her Hillary-backing fan club more and more irritating. Her remarks are, in my estimation, another sympton of Hillary-induced soul cancer. I think Taylor Marsh sucks. Thus, I was sort of hoping to find out that Ms. Marsh is a completely unqualified, unimportant, silly hack who just happened to fall into an audience because she decided to pledge an undying allegiance to The Monster during a contentious primary process. Hey, like I said, I had an ax to grind. Guess what? I did discover that Taylor Marsh fails to meet the Pundit Worthy of Attention Threshhold. She is a wee hack with an audience. She does suck--at least on some level. However, she's also interesting. Believe it or not, I now have an admittedly bizarre newfound respect for her. The Taylor Marsh story has two parts. First, it cautions us to remember that having a slick blog and a knack for PR doesn't make someone smart, qualified, or credible. Second, it teaches us that anyone can command an audience for his or her opinions. The Taylor Marsh story is about fame for the foolish, attention for the mediocre, and how a kid from Missouri can somehow grow up to be an oft-cited resource among those with an interest in serious matters--even if she might not have any business sharing the stage with serious people. Even though she didn't take home the big Miss America tiara in Atlantic City, pageant circuit winnings helped her pay her way to Stephens College. Stephens is an all-female college in Columbia, Missouri. Michelle Marshall graduated, receiving a BFA. She left Columbia (and if you've ever been there, you'd appreciate the decision) and went to New York. Her good looks, grace and talent landed her on a few <a href="http://www.ibdb.com/person.asp?id=86275">Broadway</a> stages. For whatever reason, Michelle's Broadway career was brief. That's where Michelle Marshall vanishes. We don't hear from her again. Michelle Marshall becomes Taylor Marsh. TAYLOR MARSH IN LA... Michelle Marshall/Taylor Marsh went to Los Angeles. She found herself acting as a "<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/taylor-marsh">relationship consultant</a>" for the LA Weekly, a free alternative newspaper. Maybe. Sort of. She claims that experience today, but the details are cloudy. An interview with Marsh indicates that she wrote more <a href="http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/content/fileadmin/oldsite/2002/08_22/columns_spin.html">political</a> pieces. Marsh herself says she wrote relationship columns, but tried to sneak politics into them until someone in the editorial department made her stop. Usually, if your colum is labeled an "advertisement" it's because it's not really a column at all. I don't know (actually I doubt) if the FBI has considered something interesting about the location of the mail box used to send the letters, post-dated September 18, 2001, specifically its location. Let's examine a few facts about the letters and their envelopes before I make my suggestion, as it will make more sense once we review the data:<blockquote>1. The first set of letters were sent from Trenton, New Jersey 2. At least 1 letter was dated 9/11/2001 3. The envelopes, the first batch, were post-marked 9/18/2001</blockquote>#2 and #3 would suggest that the letters were both written and stuffed with Anthrax spores sometime between 9/11/2001 and the early morning of 9/18/2001. Now let's consider that anyone having had the ability to use (and somehow obtain) powered Anthrax, would also not want to be traveling long distances with the substance. So what kept nagging me all this time is why New Jersey? Of all the places to be right after 9/11, the last place for a bio-terrorist to be would be anywhere near the tri-state area, which was by then crawling with military, FBI, police, etc. I could not get near my apartment for 3 weeks, which was on Broad St. When I finally got to my neighborhood, I was stopped several times by military officers asking to see my ID, what my purpose was, and insisting on examining my packages (food I had to go above 14th to get). And I am a blond, downtown-type, that is to say, not someone who would fit the profile of a Muslim extremist. In other words, they were stopping everyone, elderly, male, female, black, white, brown, green or otherwise. The entire tri-state area was crawling with every government agency one can thing of. So I always found the Trenton location an odd choice for a bio-terrorist, who would have to risk being stopped or risk traveling with such a lethal set of packages. What this also had always suggested to me is that the terrorist traveled by car, because one would have to carry on board a plane a lethal weapon that a). might be discovered, b). might leak, c). might get confiscated without anyone knowing what it was. There are far too many "ifs" and especially after 9/11, when airports looked like military outposts. Someone smart enough not to leave fingerprints would also be smart enough to use a car, not fly in/out with the substances. So if the suspect was traveling by car, and likely not going a long distance with such a stash, then that could place the suspects whereabouts within the tri-state area itself between 9/11-9/18. This had always bugged me because how would one even start looking for someone with this type of expertise (50-100 people in the US, maybe) be located? Were there bio-weapons conferences going on in New York, New Jersey, or CT? Was there a a guest lecturer at any of the Universities during that time or scheduled around that time? What suddenly struck me yesterday when Ft. Detrick was identified with a suspect for the third time now (the last two being apparently cleared before first being smeared) is that on September 12, 2001 New York was scheduled to host a joint "war game" or excerice with the New York Police Department and FEMA. The "game" they were scheduled to run was a bio-weapons incident in the city of New York. </div> <div class="entry-more"> Here is what suddenly struck me last night (and I am sure someone, somewhere before me has thought of this already): Red X and Tripod II. <a href="http://www.nyc.gov/html/om/html/2001a/pr149-01.html">In May of 2001, the city of NYC was told that we would be part of an exercise to test our emergency preparedness</a> against a biological attack. This is nothing new, these types of drills are often done and are much needed to be prepared for an emergency (be it drills to test hurricane evacuation methods or wild fires, etc.). There is nothing sinister about these drills, so don't get crazy on me. Anyway, this May exercise was called Operation Red Ex (or Red X). What I had forgotten was that a similar operation was scheduled for September 12, 2001, called Operation Tripod II. <a href="http://transweb.sjsu.edu/mtiportal/research/publications/documents/Sept11.book.htm#pgfId-1010248">Here is an account of OEM staff getting ready for the Tripod exercise</a>:<blockquote>"September 11 was going to be a busy day at the OEM. Staff members arrived early to prepare for Operation Tripod, an exercise that would test the plan to distribute antibiotics to the entire city population during a bioterrorism attack. The exercise was planned for September 12, with police and fire department cadets to be used as the simulated civilian population. Pier 92 was set up as a model distribution station where the "victims" of the mock attack who needed to receive antibiotics would be treated. <a name="pgfId-1010315"></a>The OEM staff heard a plane fly over their building, an unusual sound at that location, then they heard a popping noise. The kevlar-lined walls of the Emergency Operations Center deadened the sound of the plane crashing into the 110-story North Tower, directly across from the OEM offices in World Trade Center Building 7. When the building shook at 8:46, New York City Police Department (NYPD) Inspector John Odermatt, OEM's Commissioner, thought the event might have been a freak accident involving a ground-to-air missile. So no one would have thought it odd that someone in a hazmat suit was playing with powder in a lab, it was an exercise, so why would they not be, right? Now, to get from NYC to Ft. Detrick one would take the I95 route, which would take them through where? Trenton. Look at the map to the left (click to enlarge). A four hour trip. My suggestion for the FBI is to find out what scientists were part of Tripod II, narrow down which ones drove the 4 hour path back to Ft. Politicians, journalists, and academics alike have posited an inherent connection between Wahhabism, violence, extremism, intolerance and fanaticism that culminated in the terrorist acts undertaken by Usama bin Ladin’s al-Qaida network based on the fact that 15 out of the 19 hijackers were Saudis. In such a politically and emotionally charged atmosphere, fear, denunciation, and protectionism have often trumped careful academic analysis of the origins, developments and current manifestations of Wahhabism in its varied forms. This is an attempt to highlight the origins and contemporary trends of Wahhabism, giving particular attention to the issues of jihad and takfiri ideology and how they are being reformed [1]. Founding Principles <table class="highlightBox" align="right" width="30%"> <tbody> <tr> <td>Takfir was not a tenet of Wahhabism as originally founded.</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Wahhabism began as an Islamic revival (tajdid) and reform (islah) movement in 18th century Arabia. Founded by Muhammad Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab, a scholar and jurist from Najd, Wahhabism sought to return Muslims, both women and men, to the direct, personal study of the Qur’an and Sunnah (example of the Prophet Muhammad) in order to break away from adherence to past tradition (taqlid) in favor of renewed and refreshed interpretation (ijtihad). Although Wahhabism today is often accused of ignoring Islam’s long history of scholarship and interpretation, Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab himself frequently cited the rulings of the founders not only of the four extant mainstream Sunni Islamic law schools (madhahib), but also two extinct Sunni schools and one Shii school, in his discussions of legal principles prior to coming to his own conclusions. He did not accept any interpreter, including Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ibn Taymiyya, as being authoritative. Only the Qur’an enjoyed such authoritative status. The hadith enjoyed such authoritative status only when they were in keeping with the teachings and, most importantly, values of the Qur’an. Wahhabism’s central theme was tawhid, meaning absolute monotheism. Adherence to tawhid was reflected in the terminology used by the movement to describe itself – muwahhidun or ahl al-tawhid, meaning those dedicated to the central principle of tawhid as reflected in their insistence upon the absolute uniqueness of God so that nothing and no one should ever be associated with God, a practice known as shirk. Tawhid vs. Shirk The centrality of tawhid to the worldview of Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab is reflected in his most widespread work, Kitab al-Tawhid, which outlined in detail the impact that belief in tawhid was intended to have in guiding one’s life and actions, particularly interactions with others. Although Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab himself emphasized the need for an invitational approach to Islam, known as daw’ah, historically, the thematic focus on tawhid and shirk led to the development of a takfiri ideology by some Wahhabis in which those who disagree with Wahhabi ideology are denounced as infidels (kuffar) who are subject to jihad as holy war. Because this practice has been controversial both historically and in the contemporary era, it is important to note that takfir was not a tenet of Wahhabism as originally founded. Indeed, Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab did not declare anyone who disagreed with him to be either a kafir (infidel or unbeliever) or a mushrik (associationist). He reserved these terms for individuals who had committed certain actions – either making the declaration of faith in Islam after studying the religion and then publicly rejecting that faith or engaging in downright idolatry (thus rendering the person a kafir), or committing an action that violated God’s tawhid, such as praying to a saint for intercession or using a talisman for good luck (thus rendering a person a mushrik). Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab did not use the terms interchangeably because he recognized that being a kafir was a deliberate act of the will that could occur only after receiving instruction in the faith, while being a mushrik was something that a person could do accidentally due to ignorance. Consequently, he taught that the correct approach to dealing with both cases was to call the person back to the faith and instruct him or her as to why the commission of these actions was wrong. Only if the person persisted in apostasy (rejecting the faith of Islam after previously declaring oneself to be a Muslim) to the point of refusing to allow Muslims to practice their own faith might the death penalty be considered and this only in the case of an individual, not in the case of a community or collective body. In other words, being a mushrik or a kafir in and of itself was not sufficient reason to fight or kill an individual or a group of people [2]. Jihad in Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab's Worldview <table class="highlightBox" style="height: 129px;" align="right" width="215"> <tbody> <tr> <td>Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab wrote only one treatise on jihad, whose purpose was to limit, rather than to expand, the circumstances under which jihad could be declared.</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> As long as Muslims were free to practice and study their faith, Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab permitted them to live even among the kuffar, although this was not necessarily desirable [3]. This position stands in marked contrast to extremist groups like the Kharijites and al-Qaida, who declare anyone who disagrees with them to be a kafir subject to jihad as holy war. It also stands in marked contrast to how a more exclusivist interpretation of Wahhabism has been put into practice in certain times and places, based on adherence to a literal and selective interpretation of the teachings of Ibn Taymiyya, such as by the Wahhabi adherents who sacked the shrines and massacred the Shii populations in Najaf and Karbala in 1802 and by the Ikhwan who helped to unite portions of Saudi Arabia in the late 1920s. Unlike tawhid and shirk, jihad was not a prominent theme in Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab’s legal and theological writings. Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab wrote only one treatise – Kitab al-Jihad – on jihad, the purpose of which was to limit, rather than to expand, the circumstances under which jihad could justifiably be declared. The treatise details the parameters of how jihad is to be engaged, by whom and against whom, and for what purposes, with emphasis on restrictions to fighting, killing and the destruction of property, limitation of jihad to the self-defense of a geographically limited and specific Muslim community under military attack or the imminent threat of military attack, and the assertion of jihad as a collective (fard kifayah), rather than individual (fard ‘ayn), duty. In addition, Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab absolutely forbade the killing of civilians and non-combatants, whether during the conflict or afterward, prohibited rape and plunder as tools of war or reward for combatants, and denied the use of jihad for the singular purpose of expansion of political power and territory. In his interpretation, jihad was intended to be used strictly for the defense of the Muslim community and its right to practice its faith freely [4]. He specifically stated that differences of opinion in religious interpretation were not justifications for engaging in jihad or violence. Such religious differences were to be addressed through the use of da’wah as a means of debate and education [5]. Wahhabism vs. Jihadism <table class="highlightBox" style="height: 160px;" align="right" width="184"> <tbody> <tr> <td>Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab did not assert a permanent division of the world into the House of Islam and the House of War as contemporary jihadis do.</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> These major themes suggest a marked difference between Wahhabism and the contemporary ideology of jihadism with its focus on the establishment of an Islamic state ruled by the Sharia (by force, if necessary), consideration of multiple levels of “offensive” and “defensive” activities, including not only physical “attacks,” but also political, economic, financial, moral, religious, and cultural “attacks,” and even simple disagreement, and ongoing, unlimited global jihad that is the obligation of the individual (fard ‘ayn), rather than of the community (fard kifayah) [6]. With respect to interactions with non-Wahhabi or non-Muslim communities, Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab did not assert a permanent division of the world into the House of Islam (dar al-Islam) and the House of War (dar al-harb) as contemporary jihadis do. Instead, he called for the establishment of a formal relationship via a truce or armistice (resulting in dar al-sulh) as a matter of public interest (maslahah), making it clear that a permanent state of jihad was neither desirable nor in keeping with public interest [7]. Contractual relationships could be established with Christians, Jews and other religions with a revealed Scripture [8] (referred to as either ahl al-kitab, People of the Book, or ahl al-dhimmah, People of the Covenant) to be governed by payment of the jizyah (poll tax) in exchange for security provided by the Muslims. Once made and as long as the jizyah is paid, this contract is eternally binding and cannot be broken by the Muslims, even during war. The dhimmi have the right to retain and practice their own faith, raise their children in that faith, and be rescued or ransomed by Muslims in the event that they are taken prisoner during a war. Once ransomed, the full freedom, property and security of the dhimmi are to be restored. Based on the example of the Prophet and as a matter of public interest (maslahah), Ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab further extended this contractual arrangement to the kuffar, mushrikun, and Rafidah (literally apostates, but often used to refer to Shiites). These teachings by the founder of Wahhabism provide a basis for establishing formal relationships with non-Wahhabis, both Muslim and non-Muslim, that respect the right of non-Wahhabis to both practice their religion and be included as part of the community. The historical record clearly contains examples both of adherence to this idea and rejection of it in favor of a more exclusivist stance. Today, there are indications that the Saudi government and religious establishment are reconsidering and reclaiming, at least in theory, this foundational stance, with some steps being taken toward putting theory into practice through reform. Rescue workers spent the next day searching the ashes for possible victims. None were found, though one man who had apparently slept though the blaze emerged from the building the next morning. Some of their friends and relatives sobbed as the judge imposed the sentence. The judge repeatedly asked Jacqueline Maiden, 60, an election coordinator who was the Cuyahoga County board’s third-highest ranking employee, and ballot manager Kathleen Dreamer, 40, if higher-ups in the board had directed the recount rigging. “It seems unlikely your supervisors wouldn’t know,” the judge prodded. The women, standing side by side, said they had cooperated with a state investigation of the elections board in Ohio’s most populous county. The board has been a lightning rod for critics wary since Ohio gave the 2004 election to President Bush. “This big conspiracy, it’s not there,” Dreamer said. She said she wasn’t protecting anyone at the board and had been truthful in the investigation. Maiden said she wouldn’t lie, even to protect someone. “I’ve never tried to do anything underhanded,” she said. But the judge sounded skeptical. “Telling the whole truth, that’s what’s important,” Corrigan said. “I’m not convinced you’ve done that.” Erie County Prosecutor Kevin Baxter, appointed as an outside investigator to look into the election board in Cleveland, told that judge that the women had been uncooperative in the investigation and appealed for prison time for both. “The defendants have never come clean,” he said. Prosecutors said the employees broke the law when they worked behind closed doors three days before the Dec. 16, 2004, recount to pick ballots they knew would not cause discrepancies when checked by hand so they could avoid a lengthier, more expensive hand recount of all votes. Baxter criticized the outspoken support for the women from Robert Bennett, the election board chairman and head of the Republican Party in Ohio. Endorsing such criminal behavior is “amazing, it’s astounding,” according to Baxter, who didn’t indicate if the investigation might lead to more charges. Bennett said later in response that the prosecution was politically motivated and directed against Michael Vu — who quit as board director last month — and said he felt any errors by Maiden, a Democrat, or Dreamer, a Republican, were inadvertent. “If they made mistakes, they were honest mistakes. They are not criminals and for anybody to paint them as criminals is a travesty of justice,” Bennett said. He knew of no criminal wrongdoing at the board run by himself, another Republican and two Democrats, he said. Each defendant was convicted of a felony count of negligent misconduct of an elections employee. Maiden and Dreamer also were convicted of one misdemeanor count each of failure of elections employees to perform their duty. Both were acquitted of five other charges, and a co-defendant who was an assistant manager of the ballot department was acquitted of all seven counts. Ohio gave Bush the electoral votes he needed to defeat Democratic Sen. John Kerry in the election and hold on to the White House in 2004. Kerry beat Bush in Democratic Cuyahoga County 448,486 to 221,606. The prosecutor did not claim the rigged recount affected the outcome of the election — Kerry gained 17 votes and Bush lost six in the county recount. name="storyBody" style="display: inline;">(Aug. 22) -- Federal authorities have new leads in their investigation into the deaths of 71 wild horses on the Tonopah Test Range. As the Channel 8 I-Team first reported earlier this week, 71 horses died after drinking water laced with high levels of nitrates. The BLM has been investigating, but that probe is hampered because the Tonopah Range is a restricted area where classified military research is conducted. A former Tonopah employee told the I-Team that the nitrates in the water probably came from chemicals used to de-ice runways at the military base. The Environmental Protection Agency isn't saying much about that, and no one else is sure how the water was poisoned. In previous years, dozens of wild horses have been killed in the same area and Tonopah employees even ran a betting pool about how many would eventually die. (Aug. 20) -- The BLM and Air Force have a mystery on their hands -- what killed 71 wild horses up on the Nellis Range? Government scientists say a chemical in the water is what killed the horses, but they have no idea how it got there. The BLM and Air Force say high levels of nitrates in a water hole killed the horses, but how did the nitrates get in the water in the first place? If there's a chemical in the water that can kill 71 wild horses, is it also a danger to people? This has happened before, and if history tells us anything, it's that we shouldn't expect answers anytime soon... or ever. The Tonopah Test Range in Central Nevada is one of those classified playgrounds where all sorts of military toys are tested. It's off limits to everyone else, and even the BLM needed special permission to go out there to investigate the deaths of 71 wild horses. Photographs of the scene were not allowed but testing conducted by both BLM and the Air Force point to high levels of nitrates as the killer. "Nitrates can be a natural occurrence in the soil. Those nitrates could always have been in that body of water. It's normally a six to eight foot deep pond, and due to the lack of rain, the pond decreased to a foot and a half. The level of nitrate concentration is one we've never seen before," said Pat Putnam, a BLM wild horse specialist. Wild horses are tough animals. They can eat anything and survive by drinking the foulest water imaginable. Wild horse experts like Jerry Reynoldson think it's highly suspicious that so many could die like this, especially since other animals, including coyotes and birds, drank the same water from the same hole but weren't affected. They wonder if the horses were intentionally poisoned. "We haven't ruled out anything in particular. A toxicity is a form of poisoning, whether it was done intentionally or not. It doesn't seem to look like that. To get onto the base, it's a high security level area," said Putnam. But it's no secret that environmental poisons are buried and burned at secure areas in Nevada, including Area 51, the sister facility to the Tonopah Test Range. Classified workers have shown a callous attitude toward wild horses in the past. Back in 1988, a betting pool was posted at Tonopah. The person who guessed the final number of dead horses at a water hole won the prize -- 61 horses died then and it wasn't because of something natural in the dirt. "Basically, it was found that a subcontractor had ruled out some vats of some material that had high amounts of urea in it, because they were washed out on the playa and didn't permeate into the soil. The horses came and drank out of that," said Putnam. If something similar happened this time, chances are the BLM isn't going to be able to find out. The military is doing its own testing of the soil, water, and carcasses but they're not going to tell BLM or the public about any classified projects that may or may not have contributed to horse deaths. "We are not privy to that information," said Putnam. The most troubling question is also unanswered. Is there something in the water out there that could migrate beyond the borders of the military range, something that could pose a threat to more than a few dozen wild horses? Just to re-emphasize, there is no proof that anyone intentionally poisoned the horses or that anything bad might spread beyond the Tonopah test range. What we have are questions that are unlikely to be answered because of the classified work that goes on up there. But the judge, in an order several months ago, apparently concluded that the administration had overstepped its legal authorities in conducting warrantless eavesdropping even under the scaled-back surveillance program that the White House first agreed to permit the FISA court to review earlier this year, said one lawyer who has been briefed on the order but who asked not to be publicly identified because of its sensitivity.The first public reference to the order came obliquely this week from House Minority Leader John Boehner—one of a number of senior Republicans who have been leading the White House-backed campaign to persuade Congress to rush through an expanded eavesdropping measure before it leaves for August recess at the end of this week.He and other GOP leaders have said that the country will be at a greater risk of a terrorist attack if Congress doesn't act immediately—and they have accused Democrats of "playing politics" by balking at some of the provisions the administration is seeking."There's been a ruling, over the last four or five months, that prohibits the ability of our intelligence services and our counterintelligence people from listening in to two terrorists in other parts of the world where the communication could come through the United States," Boehner said on an interview with Fox News anchor Neal Cavuto."This means that our intelligence agencies are missing a wide swath of potential information that could help protect the American people," Boehner added. "The Democrats have known about this for months."Boehner's description of the scope of the ruling appears to focus on one key feature of the surveillance program—the large-scale tapping without warrants of telecommunications "switches" located in the United States; they are used to rout international calls even when both parties are overseas. But there are indications the ruling has in some instances interfered with the National Security Agency's ability to intercept phone calls where one of the parties is in the United States, as well.Under President Bush's original executive order creating the surveillance program after the September 11 attacks, the NSA eavesdropped on such calls (including those with at least one party inside the country) without seeking specific warrants from the FISA court.But last January, partly in a bid to quell criticism from Democrats and civil liberties groups, the administration agreed to submit the entire surveillance program to the FISA court for review. Much about the process has never been explained publicly. But at some point after the new program began, one of the FISA judges—who, by rotation, was assigned to review the program for periodic updates—concluded that some aspects of the warrantless eavesdropping program exceeded the NSA's authority under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the basic 1978 law that governs eavesdropping of espionage and terrorist suspects, said the lawyer who had been briefed on the ruling. The judge refused to reauthorize the complete program in the way it had been previously approved by at least one earlier FISA judge, the lawyer said, adding that the secret decision was a "big deal" for the administration.It was only after that ruling that Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell this spring began urging Congress to pass an emergency "fix" that would clarify and specifically grant the NSA authority to tap switches based in the United States without review by the FISA court. The administration effort has accelerated in recent weeks—and won the support of key Democratic leaders—amid warnings from the intelligence community that the country is facing greater risk of a new terrorist attack due in large part to the resurgence of Al Qaeda in Pakistan.Congressional aides (who asked not to be identified talking about ongoing negotiations) said today that Democratic and Republican leaders of the intelligence committees met until late Tuesday night trying to reach an agreement on a short-term measure that would grant some of the enhanced authority—including the ability to tap telecommunications switches without warrants—that the administration is seeking. One stumbling block that has emerged: the administration's insistence that Attorney General Alberto Gonzales be given an expanded role to oversee the program—a particularly controversial move at the moment, given new allegations that the embattled attorney general has misled Congress about legal disputes over the surveillance program. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, the Senate Intelligence Committee chairman, said today in a statement that he has "become convinced that we must take some immediate but interim step" to expand surveillance, but that the administration proposal to grant Gonzales greater authority "is simply unacceptable."In a conference call with reporters today, Sen. Kit Bond, a Missouri Republican and vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, lashed out at Democrats because they are resisting language in the administration proposal that would give Gonzales a new oversight role over the program. "The Democrats don't trust anybody in the administration," Bond said when asked about the objections to expanding Gonzales's role. "They didn't like Scooter Libby, they don't like Karl Rove and most of all they don't like President Bush. I don't care who they like. We need to keep our country safe." But Bond declined to respond when asked if it was a federal judge who created the alleged intelligence "gap" in the first place. "I can't comment on why this has occurred," Bond said, after checking with an aide about whether he could respond to a question about a ruling by a FISA judge. The doctors — whose names were blacked out — said that the bullet holes were so close together that it appeared the Army Ranger was cut down by an M-16 fired from a mere 10 yards or so away. Ultimately, the Pentagon did conduct a criminal investigation, and asked Tillman's comrades whether he was disliked by his men and whether they had any reason to believe he was deliberately killed. The Pentagon eventually ruled that Tillman's death at the hands of his comrades was a friendly-fire accident. The medical examiners' suspicions were outlined in 2,300 pages of testimony released to the AP this week by the Defense Department in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. Among other information contained in the documents: • In his last words moments before he was killed, Tillman snapped at a panicky comrade under fire to shut up and stop "sniveling." • Army attorneys sent each other congratulatory e-mails for keeping criminal investigators at bay as the Army conducted an internal friendly-fire investigation that resulted in administrative, or non-criminal, punishments. • The three-star general who kept the truth about Tillman's death from his family and the public told investigators some 70 times that he had a bad memory and couldn't recall details of his actions. • No evidence at all of enemy fire was found at the scene — no one was hit by enemy fire, nor was any government equipment struck. The Pentagon and the Bush administration have been criticized in recent months for lying about the circumstances of Tillman's death. The military initially told the public and the Tillman family that he had been killed by enemy fire. Only weeks later did the Pentagon acknowledge he was gunned down by fellow Rangers. With questions lingering about how high in the Bush administration the deception reached, Congress is preparing for yet another hearing next week. The Pentagon is separately preparing a new round of punishments, including a stinging demotion of retired Lt. Gen. Philip R. Kensinger Jr., 60, according to military officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the punishments under consideration have not been made public. In more than four hours of questioning by the Pentagon inspector general's office in December 2006, Kensinger repeatedly contradicted other officers' testimony, and sometimes his own. He said on some 70 occasions that he did not recall something. At one point, he said: "You've got me really scared about my brain right now. I'm really having a problem." Tillman's mother, Mary Tillman, who has long suggested that her son was deliberately killed by his comrades, said she is still looking for answers and looks forward to the congressional hearings next week. The documents show that a doctor who autopsied Tillman's body was suspicious of the three gunshot wounds to the forehead. The doctor said he took the unusual step of calling the Army's Human Resources Command and was rebuffed. He then asked an official at the Army's Criminal Investigation Division if the CID would consider opening a criminal case. "He said he talked to his higher headquarters and they had said no," the doctor testified. Also according to the documents, investigators pressed officers and soldiers on a question Mrs. Tillman has been asking all along. "Have you, at any time since this incident occurred back on April 22, 2004, have you ever received any information even rumor that Cpl. Tillman was killed by anybody within his own unit intentionally?" an investigator asked then-Capt. Richard Scott. Scott, and others who were asked, said they were certain the shooting was accidental. Investigators also asked soldiers and commanders whether Tillman was disliked, whether anyone was jealous of his celebrity, or if he was considered arrogant. They said Tillman was respected, admired and well-liked. The documents also shed new light on Tillman's last moments. It has been widely reported by the AP and others that Spc. Bryan O'Neal, who was at Tillman's side as he was killed, told investigators that Tillman was waving his arms shouting "Cease fire, friendlies, I am Pat (expletive) Tillman, damn it!" again and again. But the latest documents give a different account from a chaplain who debriefed the entire unit days after Tillman was killed. The chaplain said that O'Neal told him he was hugging the ground at Tillman's side, "crying out to God, help us. And Tillman says to him, `Would you shut your (expletive) mouth? It's quite a good piece of investigative reporting, complete with links to sites that support its contentions. Great work, and thanks out there for the submission. In late December of last year, I came across an article I thought interesting: "Lasers illuminate airline cockpits on approach." The report was that six commercial airliners within four days had laser beams shone in their cockpits, temporarily blinding the pilots. The article worried me. One month earlier an "intelligence bulletin" had been sent "to police agencies to alert them that terrorist groups have shown an interest in using laser beams to try to bring down airliners." The first incident took place on September 22, when a laser light was shined into a pilots eyes as he circled his commercial aircraft over Salt Lake City. This is no laughing matter: terrorists could use lasers to blind pilots flying passenger jets at 5,000 feet and below. On December 31, I saw another report: "Man quizzed about laser incidents" and three days later, on January 3 -- after a number of internet rumors -- an official denied rumors that the U.S. government was testing lasers to see if they could blind pilots in commercial aircraft. Even so, on January 4, the U.S. government freed a man they said was suspected of shining lasers into passenger jet aircraft. According to the story, David Banach of Parsippany, NJ, bought a green laser for his seven-year-old daughter from BigHa.com whose website states that they not only sell to civilians but "also sell to law enforcement, military personnel." Charges were brought against Banach for shining the laser into the cockpit of a commercial airliner on December 29, and again into a police helicopter on December 31. BigHa.com maintains that the lasers are used mainly to point at stars and constellations, as Banach and his daughter claimed to be doing. Banach was released on $100,000 bail. It was at this point that I became curious -- how could someone buy a laser and point it in the cockpit of an airplane? Could a laser really blind a pilot? Did David Banach really shine a laser into the cockpit of an airplane from his backyard? A laser expert told me that this was impossible: in order for a laser beam to shine through cockpit glass the person shining the laser would have to be on the same level as the plane. Another expert told me this was wrong, and that terrorists were perfectly capable of bringing down passenger jets at 5000 feet and below. I had a different theory: all of these incidents (in Cleveland, New Jersey, and Salt Lake City), were the result of a government test. The government denied it, but weakly: An anonymous government official proposed two possibilities for the laser incidents. He said that it was a bunch of kids "who got a laser light at Christmas" (oh, yeah, that sounds right), or that it was a group of terrorists in a "deliberate attempt to target aircraft" (holy cow, what're-we-gonna-do?). Nine days after David Banach's release, there was another laser incident. This time the pilot "was able to determine that the laser was coming from a building on airport grounds." Transportation Secretary Norm Mineta announced that, as of January 19 "all pilots would be required to immediately report any laser sightings to air traffic controllers." This was the last incident reported for a period of one month. Between September of 2004 and mid-January of 2005 rumors circulated that lasers had burned a pilot's retina, that an aircraft had nearly crashed after a laser was shined into its cockpit, and a civilian had been arrested for spotting constellations with his daughter in a New Jersey backyard. What was going on? Were a bunch of crazed laser-toting al-Qaeda terrorists loose in America's backyards? Or was the government running a secret program and just not telling us? On February 11 of this year an article detailed the development of a new system designed to interdict unauthorized passenger or commercial planes that had penetrated the airspace over the nation's capitol. The system? You guessed it: laser beams. "It's an attention-getter, but it's not blinding," a NORAD official said."It's not a distraction. So pilots can still focus on flying the aircraft without endangering anyone or themselves." And finally, on April 22 -- just days ago -- CNN "Technology" section ran a story headlined: "Lasers to warn pilots in restricted D.C. airspace." So here it is: the U.S. government was testing laser beams all along, despite their denials. The testing caused a minor panic that convinced pundits and air travelers that turbin clad idiots were trying to bring down our aircraft. An intelligence bulletin was even released to local police departments about the threat. Need more proof? The article announcing Mineta's request to pilots that they begin reporting incidents of lasers being shone into their cockpits was posted on January 12, the same day that technical testing of the laser warning system was completed. That is to say: the U.S. government allowed the public to believe that terrorists were testing laser beams to bring down aircraft when, in fact, the government was testing lasers to bring down aircraft. Did Mineta know and lie? Did anyone at the FBI consult with NORAD to determine whether there was any testing? Did anyone think it might be a bad idea to panic the public? What about airline pilots? Should they have been informed? And was there any danger in the testing? Why didn't the media put two and two together? If I could do it, why couldn't they do it? Going back to the articles posted months ago on CNN, I now notice things I did not see before. For instance, David Banach was reported as being 15 miles away from the aircraft when shining his laser beam. CNN reports of the beams now used to defend our capitol city, "The laser beams can be seen 15 to 20 miles away, authorities said, except in cloudy conditions." In the December 31 article, CNN reported, "A report for the FAA in June 2004 examined the effect of laser beams on pilots. Of 34 pilots who were exposed to lasers during simulated flights, 67 percent experienced adverse visual effects at even the lowest level of laser exposure. Two high exposure levels resulted in significantly greater performance difficulties and nine aborted landings." So, let's see if I have this right: the U.S. government has been using us as guinea pigs to test to see whether their stupid laser can blind pilots? What were they thinking? As for David Banach (now described in news reports as a "fiber-optic cable tester") and his daughter, well, CNN and other news networks remain mum. Was he a part of the testing program?
