Brains! Plants vs. Zombies is a tower defense and strategy video game developed and originally published by PopCap Games for Windows and OS X in May 2009, and ported to consoles, handhelds, and mobile devices, and in remastered versions for personal computers.
Ever since the release of Plants vs Zombies, it is widely popular around especially children. It is a delightful game that is both addictive and accessible, and you’ll never look at your garden the same way again. It is one of the best tower defense and zombie games ever.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Game Play:</h2>
In Plants vs. Zombies, the player takes the role of a homeowner in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. To defend their home from zombies, some of which have unique abilities, the player uses plants that can fire projectiles at, or have other detrimental effects on, the horde of advancing zombies. 
The player collects “sun” with which defending plants can be bought. Zombies approach along several parallel lanes on the lawn, and the player must plan defenses in these lanes. If a zombie makes it to the house on any lane, the level is over.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Modes:</h2>
Mini-games
Mini-games are a feature that is available on the Main Menu below Adventure Mode and in the iOS version, accessible through Quick Play. You are required to beat level 3-2 of Adventure Mode to unlock Mini-games. 
They contain variants of the regular game, with a twist or change to make it feel different. Some mini-games are exclusive to other versions while some may replace other ones due to incompatibility with the systems.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Puzzle Mode</h3>
Puzzle Mode is a game mode that contains three separate puzzle types: Vasebreaker, I, Zombie and Last Stand (iOS and Android exclusive). 
It is unlocked after completing about half of Level 4-6. In some versions of the game, the player has to buy Puzzles from Crazy Dave’s Twiddydinkies.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Survival Mode</h3>
Survival Mode is unlocked when Adventure Mode is beaten for the first time. The player must survive multiple waves of zombies. They get to choose new seed packets to defend against a different group of zombies, five total, every one (normal) or two flags (hard) to continue building up their defenses. 
For each group of zombies, the plants the player previously had on the lawn and their sun remain, but Lawn Mower, Pool Cleaner, and Roof Cleaner are not renewed. At the end of the first completion of each Survival Mode level, a trophy is received with money for any remaining Lawn Mower, Pool Cleaner, or Roof Cleaner. This mode is not available in the iPod, Nook, or Nintendo DSiWare versions of the game.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Zen Garden</h3>
The Zen Garden is a virtual garden where the player can keep plants that they have collected. This is only available in the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo DS, Windows Phone 7, and iOS versions of the game.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Versus Mode</h3>
Versus Mode is a game mode available only on the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Nintendo DS versions. It is a multiplayer mode where one player controls the plants and another controls the zombies. In the DS version though, you can’t play locally, so you’ll have to play with either DS Download Play or DS Wireless Play.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Co-op Mode</h3>
Co-op Mode is a feature added in the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network versions, but is not in the other versions. It allows two players to play as the plants at the same time.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Quick Play</h2>
Quick Play is a feature unique to the iOS, Android, Blackberry Playbook and Bada versions of Plants vs. Zombies. It lets the player play specific Adventure Mode levels again. Since the 2.4.0 update of Plants vs. Zombies FREE, this mode has been removed because the new Adventure Mode takes its place.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Design:</h2>
During development, it was discovered that newcomers to the genre of real-time strategy may have a hard time learning the concept behind sun collection. So, the price of the income generating sunflowers was dropped from 100 to 50 to encourage players to buy them over the attacking peashooter. 
As a result, the balance between plants and zombies had to be restructured a move that George Fan (Designer) said was definitely worth the effort. Programmers focused on Adventure mode for much of the first year of development. 
Upon finishing some items ahead of schedule, one of the programmers, Tod Semple, began working on ideas that would later be used for the minigame section. Some ideas for the puzzle mode section would later be tweaked and moved into adventure mode; 
“Vasebreaker” and “I, Zombie”, for example, came from single-level minigame concepts. During <a href="https://ixiegaming.com/" target="_blank" aria-label="game QA testing (opens in a new tab)" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="rank-math-link">game QA testing</a>, Fan found that minigame and puzzle modes seemed to detract from the focus on Adventure mode, so some of the additional modes and minigames were locked requiring advancement within adventure mode to become unlocked.
Fan stated that every game he worked on had only him designing the prototype, adding that he used to draw a lot before he made games, where he made pixel art. 
The final designs of the zombies and the first plants are similar to how they were initially. After searching for an artist, they discovered Rich Werner, who Fan thought clicked with what he intended for the design. 
He attributed the intrigue of the design to its animation scheme; Tod Semple suggested that they animate it in Flash and export it into the game. Fan worried that this would look like it was cut out from paper, and would resemble South Park too much, but was satisfied in the end, attributing this to Semple and Werner’s talents.
Fan was most proud of the Tall-nut, Torchwood, and Cob Cannon plants. He explained that the Tall-nut has character, citing its “determined gaze” and how it sheds a single tear when hurt. 
Laura Shigihara could not stand to see this and protected it with a protective plant called a Pumpkin, which can protect plants inside it. He felt that the Torchwood which gives Peashooters flaming ammunition required players to think of how plants interacted with each other. 
Another favorite plant of Fan’s was the Squash, due to how its name suggested its purpose; to squash things. A plant was proposed that is similar to the defensive item Umbrella Leaf, which would be planted above other plants to protect them from bungee zombies and catapult zombies. However, it was difficult to visualize their positions.
This game is more than 10 years old already and it still holds up to this day! Very easy to understand mechanics, even a child could play it. It has got endless levels, which is great for endurance runs and hardcore players and there is no need of a beast PC to play this game.

God of Thunder (abbreviated GoT) is a 2D top-down freeware puzzle game created by Ron Davis and published by Software Creations in 1993. It was previously a shareware product but was released as freeware in 2002 or earlier.
The game features a plot and characters based on Norse mythology, as well as tongue-in-cheek humor which become more apparent as the episodes are played.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Plot:</h2>
Thor is a Norse mythological god of thunders. The word Thursday has been derived from his name. He was the mightiest god of the Nordic gods who is usually known to be carrying a hammer.
Which is in this game, it chronicles the quest of Thor, son of Odin and god of thunder as he tries to reclaim Midgard for his father. Midgard, the beloved land of Odin’s, was stolen from him during his “Odinsleep” by Loki, the god of mischief, with the help of Jormangund the serpent and Nognir, the Prince of the Underworld. 
To help in his quest, Thor is given the mythical hammer Mjolnir by Odin.
As Thor progresses, he must solve puzzles set before him by Jormangund, Nognir and finally Loki. He also has to fight his way through the countryside, past city guards, and into the lairs of the gods. 
Along with puzzles and action, role-playing elements are included. Thor slowly gains more powers as he progresses, and his hammer and armor are upgraded when he defeats Jormangund and Nognir. 
Through the entire game, Odin watches over Thor and admonishes him if Mjolnir fells an innocent person.
God of Thunder was written by Ron Davis in 1993. It was never given much of a chance in the shareware market due to lack of funding, so this great game remains very rare. 
God of Thunder’s unique combination of strategy and arcade action on the PC makes it a classic favorite.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gameplay:</h2>
God of Thunder features a top-down perspective with flip-screen scrolling. Thor’s primary weapon is Mjolnir, a magical hammer which, when thrown, will return to Thor when it hits an object, an enemy, or the end of the screen. 
While returning, the hammer can pass through and damage multiple enemies. Mjolnir can also be used to flick switches, which control logs that come up from the ground and block passage. These logs are pointy, and kill Thor if he is standing over them while they come up.
There are various other objects that block the path, each with different mechanics. For instance, barrels can be moved either horizontally or vertically depending on their orientation; some bushes can be destroyed to reveal secret entrances, and some rocks can be pushed; round rocks will keep rolling once touched no until they reach an obstacle. 
Many puzzles feature snake-like enemies which cannot be harmed and will kill Thor instantly if he enters their line of sight; the player must block their view in order to pass.
In addition to his hammer, Thor acquires items and abilities which cost magic to use and have various effects. The first, the enchanted apple, heals Thor; another item electrocutes any enemy nearby. 
Magic and health do not regenerate over time, so they must be bought in villages or acquired from the random pickup provided by each slain enemy. These dead foes may also drop jewels, the currency of the game. The color of any item determines its value; a red item is worth 10 blue items.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Brain Boosters. </h2>
Gaming may strengthen a range of cognitive skills such as spatial navigation, reasoning, memory and perception, according to several studies reviewed in the article American Psychologist. 
A 2013 meta-analysis found that playing shooter video games improved a player’s capacity to think about objects in three dimensions, just as well as academic courses to enhance these same skills, according to the study. 
“This has critical implications for education and career development, as previous research has established the power of spatial skills for achievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” Granic said.

It requires the player to be able to move the joystick or keys while looking at the various features on the screen such as energy levels, oncoming adversaries, ammunitions left, available time among other factors, all which are vital to winning.
 This ensures that the player can observe and react accordingly to all requirements of that particular game. Simple games that are easy to access and can be played quickly, such as “Angry Birds,” can improve players’ moods, promote relaxation and ward off anxiety, the study said. 
“If playing video games simply makes people happier, this seems to be a fundamental emotional benefit to consider,” said Granic. The authors also highlighted the possibility that video games are effective tools to learn resilience in the face of failure. By learning to cope with ongoing failures in games, the authors suggest that children build emotional resilience they can rely upon in their everyday lives.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Education and Profession.</h2>
Many modern education institutions incorporate video games as a teaching methodology. This helps these children improve their academic skills by providing video games that are specifically aimed at enhancing their cognitive and creative skills. 
Gaming is beneficial not only for kids but also for adults. Even the military is hiring gamers.
“The ability to assimilate information, react swiftly and co-ordinate actions whilst remaining calm under pressure are often attributes of people that are good at gaming,” a Royal Air Force spokesperson tells the BBC. 
Those skills are part of what the RAF is looking for “in a variety of roles”. “Skills acquired through gaming can be very relevant to certain areas.” “There are plenty of soft skills that gamers can utilize in a professional setting, such as teamwork, problem solving and strategic planning,” says Ryan Gardner, a regional director with Hays recruitment. 
Matthew Ricci told gaming site Kotaku: “If you’re playing EVE Online you basically already have an MBA [Master of Business Administration]”. 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Problem Solving.</h2>
Video games involve certain rules. This means that the player has to think carefully before making any move to ensure that they stay within the required rules of that particular game. 
The player needs to make split- second decisions that will determine whether or not he or she will advance to the next level. According to research, individuals who play video games frequently can process the brain stimulators faster than others.

It is always the small pieces that make the big picture. Compared to adults, kids have much memory potential.  That is because children have fresh memory free of life problems while the memory accuracy of adults is hurt by the fact that they know more than children and tend to apply this knowledge when learning new information, the findings showed. 
Therefore puzzles play a vital role to exercise the kids’ memory, physical, cognitive and emotional skills which make the kids a young prodigy later.
It exercises both the right and left sides of the brain. The right is in charge of creativity, emotions and intuitive thinking; and the left is the logical, objective and methodical side.

Puzzle is not just about fitting. It’s about critical thinking about how to solve. Critical thinking, judgment, visual-perceptual skills and memory are all tested with a puzzle. 
They also learn the value of formulating theories, testing hypotheses, and changing their perspectives when something doesn’t go as planned. There is only one way to complete a puzzle and it cannot be cheated. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Emotions:</h3>
They also teach patience, self-confidence, and self-control. Making a puzzle takes time and effort. When finishing a puzzle they feel admiration and recognition for achieving it. It teaches to slowly work through the process of the puzzle before reaching the end.
 While they are concentrating on how to solve the puzzle, their minds are only on one task and that encourages their brains to go into a meditative state. This leads to a better mindset and better stress coping skills.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Physical: </h3>
Doing a puzzle help develop hand-eye co-ordination and motor coordination. Some correlation can be seen in a child’s ability to complete puzzles and their handwriting skills as they have to work carefully. 
Jigsaw puzzles require that young ones make very precise movements in order to get the pieces to fit together while Pegged puzzles in particular force toddlers to use the pincer grip. This is a crucial skill that they’ll later utilize to hold a pencil (or a paintbrush) in preschool and kindergarten.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Collaboration:</h3>
Assembling a jigsaw puzzle with someone else requires cooperation and communication. While putting together puzzles, little ones have the chance to practice their social skills. 
One child could be in charge of finding the outside edges while another focuses on an element within it communication and working things out together is key to the completion of the puzzle which later be useful for them in collaborated works and social communication.
It is not about the pieces but how they work together to reveal a surprise. Let the little ones take the opportunity to learn the shapes and connections through mathematical perception and the development of certain skills for their future.

In addition to understanding the many real concerns that today’s parents have with video games, it’s also worth considering the benefits and positive aspects that contemporary interactive entertainment choices provide.
Certainly, many popular titles today are M-rated and intended for discerning adults, given the average age of today’s gaming audience. But the vast majority of games can be played by a broad range of ages and still manage to be fun and engaging without resorting to foul language or violence.
“Games can definitely be good for the family,” says the ESRB’s Patricia Vance. “There’s plenty of selection. Oftentimes I think parents feel that they’re not because video games in the media are portrayed as violent, and hardcore games tend to get the lion’s share of publicity. But parents also need to be comforted knowing that E for Everyone is by far largest category [of software]. Nearly 60 percent of the almost 1,700 ratings we assigned last year were E for Everyone, which means there’s a huge selection of games available that are appropriate for all ages.”
In fact, most video games do have quite a few redeeming qualities – even those with violent content. All games can and do have benefits for players, and in a number of different and sometimes surprising ways.
Educational Benefits for Students
A recent study from the Education Development Center and the U.S. Congress-supported Ready To Learn (RTL) Initiative found that a curriculum that involved digital media such as video games could improve early literacy skills when coupled with strong parental and teacher involvement. Interestingly, the study focused on young children, and 4- and 5-year-olds who participated showed increases in letter recognition, sounds association with letters, and understanding basic concepts about stories and print.
The key for this study was having high-quality educational titles, along with parents and teachers who were equally invested in the subject matter. That way kids could discuss and examine the concepts that they were exposed to in the games. Also interesting is the value that video games are proven to have even for very young players. A study by the Education Department Center further found that low-income children are “better prepared for success in kindergarten when their preschool teachers incorporate educational video and games from the Ready to Learn Initiative.”

Now I’ve always had a PC in one form or another all the way back to when I was a kid in the 80′s, but it’s only been the past 6 or 7 years that I’ve had a PC that’s been capable of running the latest and greatest games. When growing up as a bored teenager in the 90′s more or less everyone I knew had consoles including myself. I must have had pretty much all the major consoles throughout this time period, from the Sega master system all the way up to the Playstation 2. But then something changed.
Back in 2004 one of my friends who had himself previously been a self confessed “console kid” decided he wanted to try out PC gaming after experiencing some cool graphics at work. He built himself a cheapish PC (he was and still is in the trade) slapped a big, expensive Nvidia 6800 Ultra video card in it and promptly invited me round for a demonstration. Well to say I was blown away was a bit of an understatement. After playing on consoles for the last 15 or so years I honestly didn’t think games could get any better graphically, how wrong was I! The thing that really hit home was the overall sharpness and fluidity of the gaming experience, sure the Playstation 2 had some pretty good looking games but this PC he’d built took things to a whole new level. That was it, I was instantly hooked, I had to get myself one of these godly machines.
So for the next 6 years I was on the seemingly neverending quest for the ultimate in graphical quality. The only problem with this is it’s cost me a small fortune! Keeping up with the constant delivery of new updated PC tech is not something to be taken lightly and yes there have been problems (mainly software) along the way, but when you load up a game like Crysis for the first time with your newly installed video card (an 8800 GTX at the time) it all seems worthwhile.
Where is PC gaming at now then? Well I really don’t think there’s a better time to get into it, Operating systems are so much more reliable these days and if you combine that with the more recent drivers from AMD and Nvidia then you have a killer package for any die-hard gamer. Games are also a lot easier to configure and run than they used to be, especially with the advent of brilliant online clients such as Steam. In fact I think Steam has really made PC gaming so much more accessible for lots of people, it’s that easy to use even a complete novice would be hard pressed to get it wrong! You don’t even need to worry about game updates anymore Steam will do that all for you. “What about the games though” I hear you ask? well nowadays there’s seemingly more and more console ports, most of these are pretty well done but there’s always going to be the odd duff one. The magical thing with PC gaming though is the absolutely humongous back catalogue, you’ve literally got thousands and thousands of great titles to choose from, not to mention a growing amount of fresh and exciting Indie games from new emerging software companies. As for gaming controllers, well pretty much any PC title these days that’s worth its salt will come with XBOX 360 pad support, however as you’re probably aware for first person shooters many PC gamers will tell you that keyboard and mouse is the only way to go.
I guess the only major issue facing a lot of people especially in the current financial climate is going to be the cost of purchasing a brand new, shiny, gaming PC. If you’re not carefull you could well end up spending far more than you anticipated. Here’s the thing though buying a PC capable of gaming has probably never been cheaper, especially if you’re prepared to build your own system. I’ve built friends gaming PCs using second hand parts for less than ?400! and yes that does include all the periperals, the monitor and the operating system. Not as expensive as you thought huh? Obviously if you’re not overly confident in building your own PC then the price will increase a little but, you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a reasonably good PC that will run most of the latest games with more or less all the eye candy maxed!
To summarise then, here are my pros and cons for both formats. Obviously I may appear to be slightly biased towards the PC but to be honest my more recent console experiences haven’t been great. The XBOX 360 I bought a couple of years ago was so appalingly bad (and noisy) I sold it after a month and the Nintendo Wii now sits in the louge feeling very unloved, after initially only being used as a glorified bowling alley simulator! So I’d like some input from you the reader to perhaps even things out a bit. I’ll start with the PC,
PC pros:
<ul><li>Endless supply of games both new and old.</li><li>Graphics and framerates far superior to any console available at this precise moment in time.</li><li>The likes of Steam make it easy to buy and play games very quickly.</li><li>You’re not tied to just gaming on a PC, there’s so much more a PC can do over a console.</li><li>Game modding, something I’ve not talked about here but the possibilities can be endless on a PC.</li><li>Cheaper games than the equivalent on the consoles.</li></ul>
PC cons:
<ul><li>Software especially operating systems and drivers are complicated and can still sometimes go wrong.</li><li>PCs especially gaming PCs don’t tend to be very portable.</li><li>Can be expensive, especially if you get the upgrade bug.</li><li>Buying a gaming PC can be confusing for the technophobe.</li></ul>
Ok so now onto the console pros and cons,
Console pros:
<ul><li>Only one format so no problems with software issues or potential bugs.</li><li>Far more portable to move around.</li><li>Can sometimes be easier to just load a game into the cd drawer and be instantly playing.</li><li>Gaming with friends can be easier.</li></ul>
Console cons:
<ul><li>Graphically poor with framerates stuck at 30 frames per second.</li><li>Games more expensive than on the PC.</li><li>Not as multi functional as a PC, burning cd’s, photo editing etc etc.</li><li>No mods, so relying on game developers doing a good job.</li></ul>
