The Baltimore Ravens waived the former Navy linebacker on Tuesday as the club trimmed its roster to 80 players. Fagot – an undrafted rookie this season – was among five players cut by the Ravens.

Fagot played in both of the Ravens’ two preseason games, recording a total of five solo tackles.

A 6-foot-3 native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Fagot was the most recent Navy graduate to get his shot in pro football after a standout career in Annapolis. A three-time All-AAC selection, Fagot racked up 282 tackles in 42 games at Navy. He also had 9.5 sacks, two interceptions, six forced fumbles, and one memorable four-yard rushing attempt in last season’s Army-Navy game.

He is the only Service Academy player to make the list.

A former two-star recruit from Missouri City, Texas, the 6-foot-7 Carter burst onto the scene last season by registering 15.5 sacks – a single season record for the Black Knights. In all, he had 17 tackles-for-loss, two pass breakups, four forced fumbles and a recovery for Army in 2021.

In addition to PFF, he has also been named a preseason All-American by the Sporting News, Athlon and Phil Steele. Many are projecting Carter to be a high pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he could be the highest Service Academy player selected in some time. Since 1986, no player has been selected higher than Navy’s Napoleon McCallum, picked at No. 108 overall by the Raiders.

Sports Illustrated’s draft evaluators have summed up Carter as: “An uber-athletic, undersized linebacker whose heart and intensity compensate for some of his physical limitations—a natural born leader.”

Navy’s Malcolm Perry retires from the NFL

Perry is the second all-time leading rusher in Navy history. He retires after spending time on the New England Patriots roster.

Malcolm Perry – the former record-setting quarterback for Navy – has retired from pro football. According to multiple reports, Perry will return to full-time service with the Navy.

The New England Patriots placed him on the reserved/retired list on July 22. The Capital reports that he will likely report to The Basic School in Quantico, Virginia. At the academy, Perry was a quantitative economics major.

A 5-foot-9 native of Kentucky who grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee, Perry received very few offers from the FBS level, and signed with Navy after considering rivals Air Force and Army, and Middle Tennessee State and Austin Peay.

Both of his parents served in the Army, but Perry would eventually become the perfect commander for the Midshipmen’s triple-option attack.

In Annapolis from 2016 to 2019, Perry totaled 6,140 yards of total offense and scored 53 touchdowns. As a freshman, he was famously pulled out of the crowd and thrust into a backup role after starter Tago Smith went down at the start of the 2016 season. After bouncing between roles as a sophomore and junior, Perry took control of the unit ahead of his final campaign.

As a senior, he was the 2019 AAC Offensive Player of the Year, was second in the nation in rushing yards, and led the Mids to an 11-2 record and No. 20 finish in the AP Poll – a season that included wins over Army and Air Force, and over Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl. Perry finished his Navy football career with 4,359 rushing yards, which is second in program history to only Keenan Reynolds. And his 40 rushing scores are fourth in Mids’ history. Perry’s 2019 rushing total – 2,017 yards – is the FBS record for rushing yards by a quarterback.

Perry played in nine NFL games with the Dolphins in 2020 after Miami picked him in the seventh round of the draft. He caught nine passes for 92 yards and a score, and also logged three rushing attempts.

He later spent time on practice squads with the Patriots and New Orleans Saints.

Two Navy men remain on NFL squads: long snapper Joe Cardona with the Patriots, and linebacker Diego Fagot with the Baltimore Ravens.

If Perry’s football career is indeed over, Navy fans will always remember some of his dazzling and electrifying runs. Against Air Force, Notre Dame, Army, and Cincinnati. In Philly and Baltimore and Annapolis. In the sun, rain or snow. If Perry had the ball, Navy always had a chance.

Opening its season, Army will host D3 Keystone College on Nov. 7. The Giants faced D1 VMI last season, losing by a score of 97-35 en route to a 9-16 season. It will be the first time that these two programs face off.

Five days later, Army will host a new D1 program in Stonehill. The Skyhawks will play their first season in the Northeast Conference and are one of three programs in the league that Army will face (Wagner, Central Connecticut State).

Army will then go on a five-game road trip beginning with a matchup at Siena College on November 16th. Last season, the Saints won the matchup between the two by a score of 83-67 as Charlie Peterson picked up a double-double and Josh Caldwell led the way with 19 points. They will then travel to Williamsburg, Virginia for matchups against William & Mary (November 19th) and Radford (November 20th). The Black Knights are 2-2 all-time against the Tribe and have never played Radford.

On Thanksgiving, Army will take the journey from the USA’s old capital to the capital of England, London for two matchups. They will open against a young Princeton Tiger team who won the Ivy League regular season title and then face either Manhattan or Northeastern on November 26th. Army is 13-23 all-time against Princeton, 6-11 all-time against Northeastern, and 44-27 all-time against Manhattan.

The Black Knights will then take a trip home for a three-game homestand against D3 Merchant Marine Academy (November 30), Wagner (December 3), and NJIT (December 7). Army is 1-0 all-time against their fellow New York academy, beating them by a score of 93-32 in 2020. Wagner finished in second place in the Northeast Conference last season but lose a lot of their team including their head coach, Bashir Mason. The Seahawks won the last matchup by 20 points in 2019. NJIT welcomes in four-star recruit Paul McMillan IV and will look to rebound off a two-game losing streak against the Black Knights.

After that tough three-game stretch, Army will play its biggest buy game of the season at Rhode Island (December 10). The Rams are now led by former Dayton and Indiana head coach, Archie Miller and are coming off a rough 15-16 season. Leading the way are North Carolina transfer Anthony Harris, Seton Hall transfer Brandon Weston, Syracuse transfer Jalen Carey, and Alabama transfer Alex Tchikou.

Army then closes out non-conference play with two games in three days, at Stony Brook (December 18) and at Central Connecticut State (December 20). This will be a tune-up for SBU’s first season in the CAA and struggled last season after it was announced that they had a postseason ban due to switching leagues. Stony Brook is 5-2 against Army all-time. Central Connecticut State struggled in the NEC last season and is 4-7 all-time against Army.

The Patriot League schedule is to be released at a later date.

Eaton was selected by Kansas City in the 21st round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

After spending parts of four seasons in the minors, former Virginia Military Institute star Nate Eaton made his Major League debut on Thursday. Eaton helped guide the Royals to a 3-1 victory in Toronto, blasting a 416-foot home run in the ninth to extend the Kansas City lead.

The Royals’ center fielder mashed a 3-2 pitch into the Rogers Centre seats, earning his first major league hit and home run in one swing.

Eaton finished Thursday’s contest with one hit and one RBI in four plate appearances.

The former Keydet earned the promotion to The Show after it was announced that 10 Royals would miss the upcoming trip to Toronto due to the vaccine mandate.

Eaton, a two-way standout at VMI, has split the 2022 season between AA Northwest Arkansas and AAA Omaha. The Kansas City farmhand has hit an impressive .301, while recording 13 home runs, 44 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases.

The path to Eaton’s Major League debut for the Royals began much earlier than Thursday’s scheduled 7:07 first pitch in Toronto. Eaton’s journey started in 2015 in Lexington, VA where he began his collegiate career in the Southern Conference.

The Chester, VA native spent two seasons with the Keydets, appearing in 108 contests as a position player and 18 on the mound.

Eaton amassed a .287 average with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs, manning the hot corner in the VMI lineup. On the bump, Eaton compiled a 4-1 record with 46 strikeouts in 45 innings, limiting his opponents to a .212 batting average in 2018.

During his second and final season in Lexington, the future Royal would etch his name into the VMI record books. Eaton set the VMI single-season stolen base record with 36, ranking third in all of college baseball.

He earned Second Team All-SoCon honors, hitting .287 and tallying a 4.44 ERA. Eaton finished 6th all-time in strikeouts per nine innings, retiring 10.36 batters via punch out.

The Kansas City Royals selected Eaton in the 21st round of the 2018 MLB Draft, joining teammates Josh Winder and Matt Pita in the VMI draft class.

Although there is no certainty for Eaton to remain on the Royals’ roster, he will get three more games to prove he belongs at the Major League level. With his versatility and speed on the base paths, expect Eaton to receive ample opportunity to carve a role in Kansas City.

The Debrief, 7/5/22: Air Force playmaker Micah Davis to transfer

Davis scored six touchdowns last season as a runner and receiver. Plus, links from around the academies.

Welcome to the Debrief, a semi-regular-ish download of news related to sports at the Service Academies, and the intersection of sports and the military.

One of Air Force’s top offensive playmakers is leaving the program.

Slotback Micah Davis announced in a tweet last week that he is entering the transfer portal.

Davis was going to enter his junior year in Colorado Springs this fall. Cadets at the academy can leave before their junior year without penalty. Once their junior year classes begin, they are committed to military service.

A season ago, as a sophomore, Davis carried the ball 47 times for 360 yards and four touchdowns – an average of 7.7 yards per-carry. He also caught 10 passes for 221 yards and two scores – an average of 22.1 yards per-catch. His six touchdowns from scrimmage were the fourth most on the team last year.

A 5-foot-11 native of Atlanta, Georgia, Davis should have three years of eligibility left. Since he played in the 2020 season, that shouldn’t count toward his eligibility clock because of the NCAA’s COVID-era ruling.

With Davis leaving, the Falcons’ top returning pass catcher for this season will be junior Dane Kinamon, who caught 10 passes for 141 yards and two scores last season. He also rushed 37 times for 165 yards and five touchdowns.

Kinamon should see an increased role in the offense with Davis out of the picture.

The ninth installation of the Veterans Classic will take place on Friday, November 11th

For the ninth season in a row, Navy will be hosting the Veterans Classic!

It was announced on Monday morning that the event will once again take place in Annapolis at Alumni Hall with both games being broadcasted on CBS Sports Network. The opening game will take place between Saint Joseph’s and Houston at 6:00 p.m. with the later tip starting at 8:30 p.m. between Princeton and Navy.

In the earliest game, Annapolis will welcome a Houston team who has made it to the second weekend in three straight NCAA Tournament’s. They will be the fifth American Athletic team to make an appearance, the first since ECU in 2019.

Their opponent will be the fifth straight A10 team to make an appearance in Saint Joseph’s. The Hawks are led by former Midshipmen basketball head coach, Billy Lange.

“The Veterans Classic in Annapolis is one of college basketball’s premier events,” said Lange. ”It is an honor for our program to compete on this day as we remember and show respect to all those who have fought for us. Spending time on The Yard of the United States Naval Academy will be an amazing experience for our team and staff. We are excited to bring our students and fans from Hawk Hill to take part in such a great opportunity for all of Saint Joseph’s University.”

The Hawks finished in 13th place of the A10, losing on the first day of the conference tournament.

In the other matchup, Princeton will take the trip south for its first matchup against Navy since the 1977-78 season. The two faced off 34 times between 1908 and then.

Princeton loses essentially their whole roster from last season’s Ivy League regular season championship team.

Tickets for the doubleheader are now on sale through the Navy ticket office.

Army-Navy locations announced for next five years; New England to host in 2023

The game will remain in the northeast corridor of the United States through 2027.

The Army-Navy game is shipping up to Boston.

Or, rather, Foxborough.

Organizers of the annual Army-Navy football contest announced Wednesday that the 2023 edition of America’s Game will be played at the home of the New England Patriots. It’s the first time ever that the game has been played in the state of Massachusetts.

Along with the 2023 game, Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk and Army West Point Director of Athletics Mike Buddie announced the locations for the game through 2027. Here’s where the game is headed:

2023: Foxborough, Mass. | Dec. 9

2024: Landover, Maryland | Dec. 14

2025: Baltimore, Maryland | Dec. 13

2026: East Rutherford, N.J. | Dec. 12

2027: Philadelphia, Pa. | Dec. 11

Philadelphia is also set to host this year’s Army-Navy game, set for Dec. 10.

Boston is a newcomer to the rotation for the game, but it winning the bid for the 2023 Army-Navy game is notable because it means the game will stay in the northeast corridor of the U.S., where it has traditionally always been played aside for a few outliers. Other cities that bid on the game that would’ve taken it out its traditional footprint included Charlotte, Orlando, Dallas and Chicago.

One reason the game has largely stayed in the northeast is because it makes for easy traveling for thousands of cadets and midshipmen. Though, Orlando seemed to be up to the task for paying for travel and lodging for 8,000 of them, as Steve Hogan, CEO of Florida Citrus Sports said: “That’s why so many communities don’t even attempt to bring this game. We’re bold enough to think Orlando can do it.”

Organizers of the game visited and toured Charlotte and Bank of America Stadium back in April. On Wednesday, Danny Morrison — Executive Director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation — said in a statement: “While we are disappointed the Army-Navy game is not coming to the South, being a finalist reinforces the fact that high-profile college sporting events are important to Charlotte.”

Had the game ventured anywhere south of the Chesapeake Bay or west of the Mississippi River, it would’ve been the first time since 1983 that the game left the northeast — that year, it was played in Pasadena, California. The game was also played in Chicago once, in 1926.

The 2023 game in New England will coincide with the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. The 2024 game at Fed Ex Field in Landover marks the 125th playing of the Army-Navy game.
