Originally from Cadis, Xary Rodríguez, a former professional cyclist, has been living in Andorra since 2013 with her husband, Xavier Florencio Cabré (also a former professional cyclist).

Her professional cycling career was preceded by other sports, such as basketball and triathlon.

From 2002 to 2011, she represented the Spanish Cycling Federation, participating in international races such as the Spanish Cup, Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and world championships.

After creating a social cycling club three years ago, she now leads the ANDONA women’s team, a dream project that has become a reality with the support of a gold sponsor: Andbank (among other sponsors).

Text: Irina Rybalchenko

“ANDONA club was born three years ago with the sole purpose of involving women in cycling – there was never any thought of competition. Last January, I decided to invite the women to fill out a questionnaire, and it turned out that 25 women wanted to compete. So, for a year now, we have been a club with ambitions to compete and win.
I am the leader of this project, but, without the team, this project would not have been possible.

Jan Missé and Jaume Mas are in charge of physical and technical training, Laia Santuré is responsible for nutrition, Anna Verdaguer is in charge of psychological support and Cathy Labouyrie is responsible for logistics.

In total, there are 300 people: 70% women and 30% men. The youngest girl in the competition team is 16-years-old, and the average age is 23-25 years old…but there are also 30-year-old female racers. In the club, they are from 35 to 45-years old.

Our girls are very strong! But they are not professionals and have never participated in cycling competitions. For 2024, the team plans that the cyclists will take part in the Spanish Track Championships, four Spanish Cups and eight Catalunya Cups.

Competitions are a great way to get motivated. But cycling is not only about physical form, it is also about being able to adapt, not to be nervous, to ride a bike in the peloton…

We would like to fight to keep this project going. But we need to work hard to gain experience.

The topic of nutrition and psychology is very much evolving. In my time, it was not sufficiently appreciated. Nowadays, female athletes not only run kilometres, but also know how to take care of themselves in all aspects. It’s called “invisible training.”

All competitive sports require a lot of effort. Cycling requires the right weight. I don’t believe in restrictive diets, I believe in nutritious ones.

This year for the first time we had sponsors. Previously, in order to pay for all the costs of the competitions’ projects of the club, we had some savings, thanks to the backing of our sponsors. We also had financial support from the government. Andbank has been our gold sponsor for three years.

Our team is growing, and we are a national level project. The image of the project is very positive.

FOTO: NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ESPANYA

Andbank pays us 20,000 euros out of a total budget of 30,000 – a very small budget that helps us to start the project.
We really like Andbank because of the play on words. ANDONA and Andbank are quite closely related in that sense.
It is important to note that the design of the uniforms was developed in a way to maximise the visibility of Andbank and our other sponsors.

Cycling has grown considerably in recent years and even more so in the case of professional women’s cycling. There has been a very strong evolution, just like in football. We now see women who can dedicate themselves to a sport and inspire other girls in a sport that was once considered a man’s sport.

Andorra is positioned as a country of cyclists, and not only men, but also women professional cyclists. I myself came to live in Andorra with my husband, who had a house here. Little by little, I settled in Andorra. It’s quite funny, because we came to Andorra for him, but we stayed for me.

In Andorra, my favourite road is the one that leads to Port de Cabús, a mountain pass in the Pyrenees on the Andorra-Spain border that connects the parish of La Massana to Alins in Catalonia.

And speaking of Spain, I enjoy the Basque Country immensely. There are a lot of secondary roads there without cars. And the culture is also very important. If you go cycling, you will find a lot of cyclists who train there.

But talking about the quality of cycling infrastructure in Andorra I would say:it is difficult to do sports here all year round. Cycling is an outdoor sport, and, in Andorra, a mountainous country, the weather conditions in winter don’t allow for good training. If it’s snowing or raining, it’s quite difficult: you go up with no problem, but when you come down, it’s very cold.

We lack a track velodrome where we can train all year round. Andorra is positioned as a cycling territory. Having an indoor velodrome would be very important and would have a positive impact on the country’s image, as well as allow training all year round”.

In 2011, CEO Christophe Lépine founded Curcumaxx, which is headquartered “in a small village near Toulouse.” Another company, in Andorra, is dedicated to the Andorran market and the development of all curcuma-based products in Europe. In the future, the company plans to develop two of the world’s biggest markets: the United States and Russia.

We talk to Christophe about the benefits of curcuma.

Interview: Irina Rybalchenko

Curcuma is a plant whose root is used as a spice and colouring agent, as well as in the medical field. What is its most important quality?

Curcuma as such is not a medicine, nor is an effective plant. It is simply a dietary spice containing a compound called curcumin. This is what is healthy and can be included in food supplements.

The dietary supplement does not require a prescription and can meet the needs of every individual.

Let me give you a simple example of how it works: an orange is not quite rich in vitamin C – you would have to eat eight oranges a day to get the concentration you need. Another example would be ginger root (which, like curcuma, belongs to the Zingiberaceae family). Curcuma is the same. We use its rhizome, an underground stem that is sometimes called the root. The rhizome contains only 3% active curcumin. We specialise in extracting this 3% and combining it into 100% active ingredients.

Curcuma is one of the main ingredients in Ayurveda, a traditional Indian and Chinese medicine that dates back over a thousand years. In India, curcuma is often mixed with milk to make a vitamin drink. And what about Europe?

India is the motherland of curcuma. Despite very high levels of pollution there, its people have good immunity because the body’s defence at cellular level, thanks to curcumin, begins at birth, when the mother feeds her baby.

In the Western world, we don’t have this tradition. That’s why Westerners are advised to treat illnesses as a preventive measure.

In fact, daily consumption of curcumin acts as cellular protection, limiting the risk of disease. What’s more, curcumin prevents viruses from entering the body, heals wounds and protects the gastric flora. In other words, in general, it’s an effective active ingredient that defends the body.

What is the best way to consume this product to see its effects?

As noted previously, one gram of curcuma root contains around 3% active ingredient. If you’re feeling well, taking 30 mg a day, as a preventive measure, will limit the risk of disease. By following two one-month or one-and-a-half-month courses of treatment, (e.g., October-November and March-April), you limit the risk of viral illnesses (sore throats, flu, etc.). It’s a boost to the immune system.

Around the age of 30-40, you need to start thinking more seriously about prevention and then treatment.

If you already have a pathology, you need 140 to 150 mg of active ingredient a day.

Curcuma is considered the elixir of youth. Is this true?

Absolutely, because it’s all about protecting the cells. The more we protect our cells, the less they age. We can’t guarantee eternal youth, but we can limit ageing.

Do you personally take curcumin and for how long?

I’ve been taking curcumin for about 20 years and I feel perfectly well!

Curcumaxx develops and offers a range of food supplements, mainly composed of curcumin and curcuminoids. What is their main value?

In Europe, according to the legislative nomenclature, we are authorised to use anti-inflammatories for headaches, joint pain, muscle pain and painful menstruation. With a good dose of curcumin, pain disappears in 20 minutes. This has been verified.

Anti-inflammatories are considered irreplaceable in the sports’ world. That’s why we sponsored the Education First cycling team for two years, giving them the benefit of our products.

What’s more, curcumin ensures a good pH balance, which is responsible for regulating psychological stress and enabling the body to sleep well. And a good night’s sleep is known to promote rapid recovery.

Are there any contraindications to taking curcumin?

Curcuma thins the blood. Contraindications include hepatitis, gastritis, ulcers, vascular disease and glaucoma.

Given what scientific studies have shown, consuming curcuma is not at all a good idea if you suffer from kidney stones.

You have the Ecocert and Nature & Progrès quality certificates. What does this mean? Is it difficult to obtain quality certificates in France?

Curcumaxx products are certified by Ecocert (a private body recognised by the state) and by Nature & Progrès. We began by offering drinkable solutions and have since developed curcuma into capsules, joint and muscle gel to soothe inflammatory conditions, and so on.

The Nature & Progrès certificate commits us to traceability, from the root to the finished product and in terms of composition. It is much more difficult to obtain this certificate than Ecocert.

The rhizome is imported and inspected by Ecocert before and on arrival. The controls are standard: they check for the absence of lead, mercury and pesticides, but they also check the curcuminoid content, which must be over 95%.

Curcumaxx is made in France to strict specifications.

It’s important to respect the dosages indicated on the products.

Where are your production facilities located?

To extract the active ingredient and manufacture the finished product, a food additive, we have been working with farmers in India, who have been supplying us with rhizomes for the last 15 years. The finished product is manufactured near Toulouse.

Where can we buy your products?

These are natural products certified at European level, so they can be found in organic shops. The products can also be bought via our website.

We offer drinkable solutions (the most effective ones for rapid relief of inflammation) and capsules (the most practical and comfortable form for daily preventive treatment).

How do you plan to develop your business?

According to statistics, two out of four people have the problems described above or suffer from chronic illnesses. We’re expanding in Europe (we have distributors in Portugal, Switzerland and Belgium); we’ve also moved closer to the United States, and we’re exploring the prospects of entering the Russian market. We hope to find a specialised distributor who can organise sales to the Russian population. If there is a demand, we will find the ways and means to meet it.

France, the UK, Spain and Italy have expressed condolences to Russians over the terrorist attack in Crocus City, condemning such actions. Paris called to “shed full light” on the situation

What happened at Crocus City Hall is disgusting, the French Foreign Ministry said. “The images reaching us from Moscow are terrible. Our thoughts are with the victims and the injured, as well as with the Russian people. Full light must be shed on these abhorrent acts,” the diplomatic ministry said.

The terrorist attack in Crocus City was condemned by the British Embassy in Russia. The diplomatic mission’s Telegram channel says: “We condemn the terrorist attack in Crocus City Hall near Moscow. This is a terrible tragedy. We express our sincere condolences to the families and friends of those affected and killed…”

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote that he had contacted the diplomatic chargé d’affaires in Russia and was monitoring the situation with the diplomatic ministry’s crisis unit. “I express condemnation of all forms of terrorism and solidarity with the families of the victims”, he said.

The Italian embassy in Russia has published the phone number of the crisis unit, which can be called in case of emergency.

Spain’s foreign ministry said in connection with the terrorist attack in Crocus City that Barcelona “condemns any form of violence”. “We are alarmed by the news coming from Russia. Our solidarity with the victims, their families and the Russian people,” the diplomatic ministry said in a publication.

Before that, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a televised address to Russians in connection with the terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall entertainment centre. Putin said that all four direct perpetrators of the terrorist attack in “Crocus” were detained while trying to leave Russian territory.

24 March was declared a national day of mourning in Russia.

On the evening of 22 March, a terrorist attack took place in the Crocus City Hall concert hall in Krasnogorsk (Moscow Region). Before the performance of the band “Picnic” armed men burst into the hall and opened fire on the audience. After that, a series of explosions sounded and a fire broke out.

Earlier Muslim leaders of Russia unanimously condemned the terrorist attack in “Crocus City Hall”.

After making Bing Chat Enterprise, a secure AI chat solution based on internal data, available to employees in August 2023, the Company is pursuing its digital transformation.

In September 2023, TotalEnergies launched a test phase with 300 employees, with positive results. TotalEnergies therefore decided to deploy Copilot for Microsoft 365 for its employees to accelerate its operational transformation. As benefits: an improved operational efficiency and greater user comfort.

TotalEnergies will also provide its teams with Microsoft Power Platform licences, a “low code-no code” application development service enabling them to create, on their own, digital applications that turn their ideas into reality. Employees will thus be able to design solutions connected to other TotalEnergies applications and databases, to solve their simple or complex day-to-day problems more quickly and efficiently.

At the same time, TotalEnergies is implementing a program to support and enhance the skills of its employees in order to help them use these new tools and get the most out of them. In 2024, every employee will receive training dedicated to the use of these new IA tools.

“In line with our pioneering spirit, TotalEnergies is committed to digital transformation and supports its employees so that they can make the most of it. The new technologies of generative artificial intelligence and of ‘low code no code’ will provide them with the simplification and autonomy they need to put their skills and creativity even further at the service of our company’s transition strategy,” said Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies.

La Castanyada (the Day of Chestnut) is a national holiday of Catalonia (Spain) and widely celebrated in Andorra (Pyrenees). The name of the holiday derives from the word castanya—translated as “chestnut.” Chestnuts can be bought here on Allhallow Day Eve (Tots Sants) that coincides with a second popular Halloween—at night from October 31 till November 1. On Chestnut Day, chestnuts are fried in huge pans on an open fire, filling the air with a sweet, smoky smell.

Traditionally, people eat them with baked sweet potatoes (moniato) and confectionery (panelets) and drink sweet white wine (vi ranci and moscatell).

The Day of Chestnut. The tradition of eating fried chestnuts and sweet potatoes takes its origin from Medieval centuries. On the Allhallow Day Eve, in all parishes and monasteries of Catalonia, ringers tolled bells, reminding citizens to pray for the souls of the departed.

Chestnuts were the food for bell ringers—they are very nutritious and mid- autumn is their growing season. Congregants baked chestnuts in the squares in order to help ringers restore their energy, as they had to toll the bells all night long. This is how the tradition of eating chestnuts and sweet potatoes and drinking Muscat wine, emerged. A bit later, sweet buns (panelets) were added to the traditional list.

From the end of 18th century, chestnuts became the objects of trade and could be bought at all central squares. From this time, the symbol of the holiday emerged: an old lady dressed in long, dark skirt with kerchief and apron; i.e., a typical chestnut seller. La castanyera is the heroine of Catalonian central streets.

Chestnuts in Catalonia and Andorra can be bought between the end of October until the beginning of November.

From the second half of the 19th century, the Spanish royal family started spending their summers in Comillas, and so did large part of the Spanish nobility, whose many descendants still frequent the town every summer. As a result, Comillas left an imprint of architectural relics such as palaces and monuments designed by renowned Catalan artists in particular, i.e. Gaudí or Doménech i Montaner. It still maintains its character as “the haven for the decadent and discreet aristocracy”.

Main façade of the cemetery, a monument since 1983. The Comillas cemetery was installed next to a late 15th century church, already in ruins. The reform began in 1881, and Domènech i Montaner intervened in it, integrating the ruin into the cemetery, by creating a closure with crosses and pinnacles. On one of the walls of the old church stands the sculpture El Ángel Exterminador, a modernist work by Josep Llimona (from 1895).

The city of Ripoll and the Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria

The first mentions of the presence of people in Ripoll (Catalonia, Spain) belong to the Bronze Age (1500-600 BC). This information refers to small, disparate settlements near the Ter and Freser rivers, surrounded by mountains. The findings of bronze objects and tools confirm these assumptions.

In the IX century, residents of the surrounding areas began to concentrate around the place that today is called the city of Ripoll. The initiator of the settlement in this area was Count Wilfred the Hairy (Guifré el Pelós) (840-897).

This historical character of French origin, considered one of the fathers of the Catalan nation, founded in 879 the Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria. The monastery was governed by a community of monks on the orders of St. Benedict. The first head of the monastic community was Abbot Oliba, whose name is associated with the main stages of the formation of the monastery as the center of lands in the area of Ripoll. These works were closely associated with the increase in the political, economic and jurisdictional power of the monastery in Catalonia.

For the sake of their security, the Ripolians settled near the monastery, which built a wall in the XIV century in order to guarantee peace for the population and not to be attacked from the outside. Security, as well as the construction of a water channel from the Fraser River, provoked the development of trade in the region. The water channel became the most powerful economic engine for the population and contributed to the development of industries such as iron processing, weaving, and woodworking.

In 1428, however, the monastery and its walls suffered serious damage as a result of an earthquake. The restoration of the monastery, which took place in the 15th century, led to the appearance of arches and vaults already in the Gothic style. However, the structure of the church has not been changed.

The city itself continued to develop beyond the destroyed walls of the monastery, when two new districts and new quarters appeared. And the precipice on the other side of the river Ter, formed as a result of the earthquake, was chosen by the abbot Climent Mai in 1573 as the site for the construction of the first Ripoll hospital.

Despite the fact that the population respected the monastery, confrontations between the monastery and the villagers, who in one way or another wanted to get rid of economic control and pressure from the abbey, were not uncommon in that era.

This situation was exacerbated by the consequences of military conflicts. First of all, we are talking about the so-called Spanish-French War of the Reapers 1640-1659 (Guerra dels Segadors) and the presence of French troops in the territory of Ripoll.

During the 16th and 18th centuries, Ripoll experienced rapid economic growth, in particular, thanks to the manufacturing of firearms (cannons, muskets). This fact made Ripoll one of the main weapon centers of both Spain and all of Europe.

In parallel, the city developed textile production, a chocolate factory appeared, and mills were built for the production of flour. This situation persisted until the beginning of the XIX century. During the War of Independence (1808-1814), France often attacked Ripoll. The walls of the city suffered serious damage.

In 1812, the villagers were able to free themselves from the power of the abbey, to which they had been subordinate from the 19th century. The final blow, which put an end to the domination of the monastery and the period of economic prosperity, occurred during the First Carlist War (1833-1840).

The nationalization proposed by Minister Mendizábal, assumed that all property of the monastery should pass into the hands of the state. As a result, the abbot and the monks left the monastery and Ripoll. The property of the monastery was plundered. As a result of popular unrest caused by high taxes, part of the property was burned. The main unrest occurred in 1835 and occurred until May 1839, when Ripoll was attacked by French troops under the leadership of Commander Charles d’Espagnac. After heavy fighting on May 27, the French occupied the city, and, not quite satisfied with the victory, burned houses, bridges and many industrial buildings. Until 1839, the population of Ripoll was 3200 inhabitants. After the war, the population reduced to one thousand.

After the end of the conflict, some residents returned and started to reconstruct the city. At the same time (1844 – 1850), the state was auctioning off the remaining property of the monastery.

In general, the war led to the economic transformation of Ripoll – from the metallurgical sector to the textile sector. The use of the water of the Ter and Frazer rivers in the second half of the 19th century led to the creation of numerous factories thanks to foreign industrialists, who also benefited from the urban improvements that took place during this period. In particular, in 1882 a centralized water supply was built, supplying the city with clean drinking water. In 1892, centralized electric lighting was carried out. In 1880, a railway was built, which transported coal from the mines of Ogassa to Barcelona. These changes led to an increase in population, including on the outskirts and periphery of the city, near the mines and along the railway.

During the period of economic growth, thanks to the initiatives of Bishop Vic Dr. Josep Morgades, and many ordinary villagers, work began on the restoration of the church of the monastery of Santa Maria. The main reconstruction occurred in 1886 and lasted until 1893.

Before the beginning of the Civil War (1936), the city was actively developing. Fashionable aspects of modernism appeared in the architecture of the city, in particular, due to the activity of Joan Rubió, one of the followers of Antonio Gaudi.

The railway connection between Ripoll and France was established through the trans-Pyrenean railway, which opened in 1929.

In the cultural sphere, dynamic growth was especially marked, due to the emergence of numerous cultural associations, orchestras, theaters, newspapers and publishers. At this time, the Archival Museum of St. Peter (1929) was opened.

This prosperity ended with the outbreak of the Civil War, which resulted in the prohibition of any manifestation of “Catalanism” and the imposition of a new type of political regime.

After the difficult years of the postwar period, Ripoll once again enjoyed an era of progress and development. The textile sector was restored in the industrial area, the metallurgical industry began to flourish again. This period of rising prosperity was closely associated with impressive demographic growth, mainly due to migration flows that led Spaniards to Ripoll from all over the country. If in 1950 there were 7,451 people in the city, after 20 years this figure reached 10,000.

In order to comply with the new migration processes, the urban infrastructure began to develop beyond the borders of the old city. Since the very end of the dictatorship, in 1975, the city has undergone a series of positive changes aimed at creating the necessary conditions to meet the standards of the end of the 21st century.

Today the city is one of the tourist centers of Catalonia.
