38.
39.
40. Architecture and urbanism in Islamic societies continue to experience a multitude of influences and dramatic transformations that generate critical questions about urban growth, sustainable development, retrofitting cities, the quality of urban life, healthy environments, liveability, identity, migration and multiculturalism, among others. In some regions within the Islamic world, architecture and urban environments are developed in association with severe challenges including environmental degradation, ethnic and regional conflicts and mass displacements of refugees, political and economic instability, among other undecorated realities. In essence, this conveys a sharp dichotomy—emerging as an important field of inquiry that prompts in-depth investigation and assessment.
41.
42. Historically, the notion of Islamic architecture or Islamic city was first characterised in the Orientalist discourse and was later interrogated in national post-colonial debates then was questioned by the rise of nationalist particularism, international architecture, cosmopolitanism, and globalisation as constructs which, despite their consequences, liberated the discipline of architecture from the older, fixed prototypes and recognised the impact of different world orders on the production of architectural knowledge in academia and practice. Embracing these other conceptualisations in their work, architects practicing in Islamic societies continue to adopt, adapt, and demonstrate their wide range of original and creative skills. Architectural Excellence in Islamic Societies departs from the typical connotation of architecture or cities as ‘Islamic’ and underscores the appreciation of architecture in its wider context, a pluralistic ‘Islamic’ society.
43.
44. Architectural Excellence in Islamic Societies emphasises that the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (AKAA) is globally acknowledged as the leading paradigm as it strives to relocate Islamic societies within the geographies of architectural narratives through its recognition of the multiplicity of architectural and urban responses produced within a variety of social, cultural and economic environments. This challenges the conventional canons of architectural theory that have been principally produced within Europe and North America and continues to be transposed into regional discourses of Islamic societies. The book aims to develop a responsive discussion that offers opportunities for the appreciation of historic and contemporary regional architectural and urban traditions that have been oversimplified or ignored within Western architectural discourse. The fundamental intention is to instigate parallel architectural narratives that are not aimed at competing with but are equally important to Western architectural authority, and to develop a debate that directly responds to the unique opportunities and challenges facing Islamic societies while critiquing context specific values of excellence.
45.
46. In 1989, Ismail Serageldin’s Space for Freedom: The Search for Architectural Excellence in Islamic Societies was published to commemorate the first decade and the achievements of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Rightly so, he noted that the Award had been established to construct an intellectual environment where originality and architectural relevance can soar. This will definitely progress in diverse ways and will go beyond a single school of thought where awarded projects exhibit a sound excellence, not only in articulating cultural production and architectural innovation, but also in addressing the requirements of sustainability in its wider interpretation. After more than three decades, since the publishing of the Space for Freedom, Architectural Excellence in Islamic Societies has significantly developed into prominent endeavours and achievements that truly reflect the broadened demands placed on the architectural profession by societies and the associated circumstantial peculiarities.
47.
48. Architectural Excellence in Islamic Societies uncovers architectural and place production away from ‘Orientalism’ and the colonial chauvinistic views by constructing narratives unique to various contexts within the Islamic world while discussing the role of the Aga Khan Award in setting values of architectural and urban excellence. The examination of more than sixty awarded and shortlisted projects developed in more than thirty five countries delineates decolonised narratives on the enduring values of architecture; architectural and urban conservation; built environment sustainability; and architectural pluralism and multiple modernities. The oeuvre of award-winning figures and projects unveils the critical cognizance of the Award in acknowledging materialised accomplishments that represent the best and most worthy ideals of architectural values in Islamic societies. These accomplishments, including a spectrum of heritage, cultural, educational, communal, community, and social projects, establish clear connections between socio-cultural aspirations of Islamic societies, values of excellence, and architectural and urban responses to social and environmental needs and challenges.
49.
50. It is clearly evident that the findings of studying more than four decades of architectural and urban excellence depart from portraying Islamic societies within post-colonial urban struggle, or slum challenges, or simple infrastructure provision. In essence, the Islamic world offers a rich soil for debating and researching persistent concerns that present themselves as timely themes on the academic map and professional interests and as important material for further inquiry and examination. The narratives developed in this volume manifest the assortment of challenges facing Islamic societies while demonstrating successful and conscious endeavours in conceiving stunning solutions that capitalise on the opportunities those challenges create.

Or is the real design question a much bigger one, for which we need to look system-wide?<br style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.701961); 157. Charrette, the journal
 158. of the Association of Architectural Educators (AAE), first published in
 159. 2013, is now well established as a pioneering journal for academics,
 160. practitioners, and theorists engaged in design teaching practices and
 161. theoretical debates. For this issue (Volume 5, Issue 1), Charrette
 162. invites papers and essays that address positions, experiences, and
 163. experiments which are undertaken in the Global South by either local or
 164. international academics or both.

 165.
166.
167. ________________________________
168.
169. THEME
170. The main body of literature on architectural education and design
 171. pedagogy is primarily produced in the English-speaking world and is
 172. interrogated, debated, and reproduced mainly in the larger context of
 173. Western Europe and North America. The architectural academic community
 174. in other parts of the world; the Global South, is deeply influenced by
 175. such a discourse as well as by various pedagogical trends typically
 176. introduced in Western academia to reflect the needs of budding
 177. professionals and the profession of architecture at large. In essence,
 178. these represent tendencies that are instigated and practiced within the
 179. contextual particularities of Western academia including the ambitions
 180. and constraints of academic institutions, the professional milieu, and
 181. the way in which architecture is practiced and produced. Classically,
 182. such an influence manifests itself in the fact that in any discussion
 183. about pedagogy in architecture in Global South’ academia the discourse
 184. which characterizes the Global North dictates and thus overshadows
 185. opportunities for developing another parallel, or in fact different but
 186. equally important, discourse which can be generated and developed to
 187. address other unique particularities that characterize the Global South.
 188. The thrust here is not to create a competing discourse but to
 189. complement what is already there.
202. Architects for Peace is holding an information session and workshop to discuss current project activity and, to seek out further projects that will continue to build on the vision, mission and values of the organization and it's Strategic Plan (Spring 2014 to Spring 2018). This public session presents opportunities to learn about the organization's history and current values, invites multi-disciplinary discussion about projects that aim to address spatial and social justice issues in our urban and natural environments, and, will explore what inspires us - as built environment professionals - to 'make change' while we are identifying with a number of social injustices, conflicts and barriers that limit access to freedom of speech.

All Melbourne-based steering committee members and active volunteers will be available on the day to chat about the workings of the organization. As pre-workshop preparation, participants are kindly asked to bring a notepad, pen and a short reflective piece of writing that addresses a part of the Strategic Plan and how this may challenge or support their values about the built environment.

 306.
307. Since the beginning of the new millennium, it was apparent that a new phase influencing the development of architecture and urbanism in the Mediterranean and the Middle East had begun, when rulers, decision makers, and top government officials developed stronger interest in architecture and development. With such a sturdy interest many cities in this region are experiencing rapid growth coupled with fast track urbanization processes, and marked by large scale work, learning and residential environments, and mixed use developments. This is witnessed from Istanbul’s intensive urbanization process to Abu-Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island Development to Bahrain Financial Harbor, and from Kuwait’s City of Silk to the future city of Qatar, Lusail. Notably, some cities have acquired a geo-strategic importance. Through the shift of global economic forces, they have developed to central hubs between old economies of Western Europe and the rising economies of Asia. In the context of international competition between cities new challenges are emerging. Organized jointly by Faculty of Architecture at Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul and the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at Qatar University in Doha, this symposium addresses a number of sub-themes unique to architecture and urbanism in this part of the world including:
308.
309. 1. Architectural Identity, City Branding, and Image Making.
310. 2. Architecture and Urbanism of Cities within Cities.
311. 3. Informal Urbanism-Behind the Scenes of the Global Images.
312. 4. Multiculturalism and the Emerging City.
313. 5. Place Making, Politics and Urban Power.
314. 6. Scapes of Flows and the Contemporary City.
315. 7. Social Impacts, Health and Sustainable Environments.
316. 8. Urban Cohesion, Sustainability and Community Participation.
317. 9. Urban Sprawl, Density, and Transport.
318. 10. Urban-Spatial Regeneration and Heritage Conservation.
With the theme “The Future of Architectural Education”, the conference aims to bring together internationally and locally renowned architects, educators and scholars to present their views, debate current modes, and investigate possible new directions in architectural education in Malaysia.
322.
323. Architectural education is now shifting due to multiple factors that pose unprecedented challenges to our profession and lives. These factors include the population growth, the information knowledge revolution, the changing social and cultural realities, the globalization of the economy, the arising new technologies and materials, the increasing environmental degradation/consciousness, the pressures of urbanization and migration, among many others. So, how can architectural curriculum integrate a critical understanding and approach to the issues and events that will most likely impact society, architecture and ourselves in the years ahead? How can educators of architecture prepare themselves to face these challenges?
334. VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Stadtarbeit
 335. In Stadtarbeit a format was developed within the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK festival enabling
 336. designers to participate in the event by producing a project so outstanding for its qualities in
 337. addressing social themes that it qualified for selection by a jury. Participation in the festival is free of charge because of this selection; moreover a grant of € 700,- (excl. VAT) is available for
 338. implementation costs.
 339. The goal of Stadtarbeit is to push through projects that address issues of social development just as
 340. much as urban work, the social space, improvement of communication between different
 341. population groups, and improvement of the living conditions of minorities. As far as possible, this
 342. will concern projects in the public space, but they must at least be accessible and understandable
 343. to the general public. This is regardless of whether they materialise as an action, a participatory
 344. project, an object or a guideline for action.
348. Building Trust international have just announced a new open design competition, which seeks to find well designed homes for the elderly or homeless within some of the World’s richest countries. The growing rate in single occupancy households has led to increased numbers of young and elderly people affected by poverty being forced to live in substandard living conditions and in the worst cases sleeping rough. HOME International Open Design Competition is directed to designers, engineers, architects and house builders to provide a solution to the housing crisis by offering sustainable, affordable small homes that give those that are alienated or marginalized within society a safe place to live. Building Trust international ask contestants to site their proposals in an urban area of a developed country, develop single occupant designs that are sensitive to the local context and keep to a budget of £20,000 ($30,000). Building Trust international will work alongside local government and community groups to seek funding and planning for the winning design. The design competition has the support of Habitat for Humanity and the YMCA.
Acclaimed Colombian architect Lorenzo Castro will survey how both cities, that share a history of rapid and disorganised growth, have constructed new public spaces since 1990 and invested in their most deprived areas. Through the creation of balanced and environmentally sustainable areas, both cities have been able to generate a ‘citizen’s culture’ and an enhanced quality of life for all.

7.00pm-8.00pm
Tuesday 4 October 2011
Carrillo Gantner Theatre
Basement - Sidney Myer Asia Centre
The University of Melbourne

Event link

Exhibition: To coincide with the lecture, an exhibition curated by Lorenzo Castro and Alejandro Echeverri titled Colombian Architecture: A visual narrative of two cities will be held in the Wunderlich Gallery in the Architecture Building at the University of Melbourne, 3-12 October 2011.

NZ Architecture + Women

If you are a woman involved in any way with architecture and New Zealand, consider signing up at the new Architecture + Women website and be part of an exhibition planned for 2013. Norden Fund
Travel/Study Grants
Call for Applications

Application Deadline
April 18, 2011

About the Norden Fund
The Deborah J. Norden Fund, established in 1995 in memory of architect and arts administrator Deborah Norden, awards a total of up to $5,000 annually in travel/study grants to students and recent graduates in the fields of architecture, architectural history, and urban studies. For a list of past winners, click here.

The Deborah J. Norden Fund is administered by the Architectural League of New York.

How to Apply
Applicants must submit a proposal (maximum three pages), which succinctly describes the objectives of the grant request and how it will contribute to the applicant’s intellectual and creative development. The grant amount requested (up to $5,000) must be specified. The submission should also include a résumé of not more than two pages and a projected project schedule and budget for travel and other costs. An addendum of not more than four pages may include images, maps, or other supporting material. Two letters of recommendation must be requested from individuals who are knowledgeable about the applicant’s ability and project.

Eligibility
The fund may award one or more grants. Applicants must reside in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico. The application process is extremely competitive. The intention of the fund is to support genuinely independent projects that require travel. While requests for support of dissertation research will be considered, they are not a priority of the fund. Preference will be given to strong proposals from applicants who have not had this sort of opportunity before.

For more info. www.archleague.org

The power of SELF

Your self portraits define you.
