  106. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Chapter held its Fall meeting in northwest Arkansas on November 7-9, 2013.  This meeting was organized and hosted by our members Philip J. Jones at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and Catherine Petersen at the Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, towns that are about 20 miles apart.</p>
  107. <p>On Thursday the 7th, early arrivals met in Fayetteville to tour Vol Walker Hall and its new addition, the Steven Anderson Design Center. The new complex houses all three academic components of the School of Architecture: Architecture, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture. The traditional get-reacquainted dinner was held at a Thai restaurant near campus.</p>
  108. <p>Friday&#8217;s activities started at the main library at the University.  During the Business Meeting, the new chapter Flickr account (<a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/arliscp" rel="nofollow">http://www.flickr.com/groups/arliscp</a></a>/) was unveiled, and among other things, by-laws and 2014 meeting locations were discussed.  The Spring meeting will be held in Kansas City, and in the Fall we will gather in St. Louis. </p>
  109. <p>Mikael Kriz of St. Louis University gave the first presentation, on the career of Walter T. Bailey, an early African-American architect from Illinois, with special emphasis on his Pythian Bath House and Hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  After lunch and a tour of the Fine Arts Library, Phil Jones, Catherine Petersen, and Lois Crane spoke about their experiences with collaborations between museum, public, and academic libraries. </p>

  111. <p>The group then made the trip to Bentonville to see the magnificent Crystal Bridges Museum of Art.  Catherine Petersen led the group on a quick tour, which included the library, after which there was free time to admire the building complex and the art collection before dinner in the museum&#8217;s spectacular restaurant. </p>
  112. <p>Some members met for breakfast on Saturday and more sight-seeing before scattering back to our homes. All agreed this was another highly successful meeting. </p>

  144. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Chapter held its Spring meeting in Omaha, Nebraska on June 6 – 8, 2013.  This meeting was superbly organized and hosted by Kay Logan-Peters, our member in Lincoln, who among other things is the head Art &amp; Architecture Librarian at the University of Nebraska. </p>
  145. <p>We ate our traditional get-reacquainted dinner at King Fong in the Old Market area, a traditional Chinese-American restaurant that is the oldest operating restaurant in Omaha.</p>
  146. <p>On Friday morning we met at The Kaneko, a new non-profit cultural institution that bills itself as a place that fosters and celebrates creativity of all kinds (<a href="http://thekaneko.org/kaneko-programs/" rel="nofollow">http://thekaneko.org/kaneko-programs/</a>).  It holds art exhibits, concerts, classes, lectures, workshops, and has a small library, where the sit-down portions of our day were held.  During the Business Meeting, we discussed various housekeeping issues, talked about our website and social media, heard a report about the Pasadena conference, and discussed meeting frequency and locations. </p>
  147. <p>We then toured the Kaneko facility, which is being carved out of three old warehouse buildings, guided by its Director of Visitor Services.  </p>
  148. <p>After lunch we returned to the Kaneko library for our afternoon program, “21st Century Collection Development”.  Four of our members spoke about different aspects of this topic.  Amelia Nelson (Nelson-Atkins Museum) reported on the Art Museum Libraries Symposium that was held recently at the Peabody Essex Museum.  Phillip Jones (University of Arkansas) spoke about the decision process of acquiring e-books. Kay Logan-Peters&#8217; presentation dealt with problems with her current approval plan and her strategies to circumvent it.  Susan Craig (University of Kansas), gave us the scoop on her enviable collection development trips to Europe, funded by a special endowment, when she visits bookstores, dealers, and publishers.  </p>
  149. <p>We then walked a few blocks to the old Union Pacific railroad station, a white Art Deco extravaganza that has been restored and is now a breathtaking historic site/railroad museum.  (<a href="http://www.durhammuseum.org/about/welcome.aspx" rel="nofollow">http://www.durhammuseum.org/about/welcome.aspx</a>).  A knowledgeable docent showed us around, then let us wander on our own. </p>
  150. <p>Saturday morning, we toured the Joslyn Art Museum.  To our surprise and dismay, its wonderful library was closed and dark.  We had known there was no professional librarian there any longer, but a guard told us that there was no library staff at all and it is not open to the public.  Otherwise, the museum was interesting and rewarding; the new exhibit, <em>Renoir to Chagall: Paris and the Allure of Color </em>, was enjoying a large crowd on its opening day. The group gradually broke up for journeys home by noon.</p>

Ellen will contact webmaster Mikael Kriz to work out a deadline for completing the website. TEI should be able to give someone else access to the site if needed. Susan Bobo suggested that we add photos of our libraries. Susan Craig suggested that the chapter think of additional content to add that would help those who would like to join us. It might be good to post a testimonial&#8211;what individual members value about the chapter&#8211;along the lines of the content on ARLIS/NA’s website. Phil would like to use the listserv to look for a hook: a sense of mission and vision. In addition, we need to remove the old chapter sites and to archive the content of the old sites. It would be useful if the new website included email contacts for members.</span></span></span></p>

  259. <p>The Chapter held its Fall 2012 meeting in Lawrence, Kansas on September 27th and 28th.  Librarians from the University of Kansas (KU) and Haskell Nations University organized and hosted this informative, enjoyable, and well-attended meeting.  Our traditional get-reacquainted dinner was generously hosted at a member&#8217;s home, with food and drink provided by other local members.  During the Business Meeting, held at the Murphy Art &amp; Architecture Library at KU, recurring issues of membership, communication, and our online presence were debated.  The group also discussed future meetings, such as Spring 2013 in Omaha, Fall 2013 in Fayetteville/Bentonville, and Spring 2014 in Kansas City.  It is time to elect new officers for 2013/2014:  a Secretary/Treasurer and a Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect.  Anyone interested in serving should contact any chapter member or comment to this blog.</p>
  260. <p>A KU expert in communication and fundraising then presented a program, &#8220;Preparing a Communication Plan for your Library&#8221;.  She explained the details of how she and her colleagues are improving public perceptions and increasing donations for the university&#8217;s libraries. After lunch at the Kansas Union, the group viewed the exhibit &#8220;Giorgio Vasari and Court Culture&#8221; at the Spencer Museum of Art, then assembled back at the library to hear the exhibit&#8217;s curator&#8217;s fascinating explanation of how she researched the exhibition in libraries, museums, and archives around the world.</p>
  261. <p>We then traveled to the campus of Haskell Indian Nations University, where we first toured the library, and then were treated to a wonderful presentation of Native American dances and costumes by five students.  During one relatively simple Friendship Dance, many members of the chapter joined in, creating a good atmosphere of camaraderie to end the day.  Many members then headed to downtown Lawrence to browse and shop at exhibits and bookstores and hear street musicians before gathering again for dinner.  As always, chapter members provided and received important opportunities to learn, see, and get to know their colleagues at this meeting.</p>

  288. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Central Plains Chapter (Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Arkansas) of the Art Libraries Society of North America held its Spring meeting in Wichita, Kansas from April 25&#8211;27, 2012.  Our three members there, from the Wichita Art Museum and Wichita State University, did a wonderful job of organizing and hosting the meeting.  We had a gratifyingly large number of attendees, including at least one member from all of our states.  It was a good combination of long-time and newer members.</p>
  289. <p>On Thursday the 25th, the group met in the late afternoon to explore a restored historic section of downtown, “Old Town”, and eat our traditional get-reacquainted dinner.</p>
  290. <p>On Friday morning we met at the Ablah Library at of Wichita State.  During the Business Meeting we again discussed ways of increasing chapter membership and consented to have a chapter Facebook page created.  We also discussed the recent ARLIS/NA conference in Toronto and the chapter&#8217;s travel awards.  For a change, the next two meetings have already been scheduled or spoken for.  The Fall meeting will be held in Lawrence, Kansas from September 27 – 29, and the meeting next Spring will be in Omaha, Nebraska.</p>
  291. <p>The program portion started with a presentation by chapter member Rachel Crane about the project to document and keep up with the outdoor murals and other street art of Wichita.   292. <p>Next, chapter member Ron Michael presented a program on artist Henry Varnum Poor, a well-known early 20th century painter and ceramicist who had ties to Kansas.  Ron spoke about Poor’s life and work, and an upcoming exhibit of Poor’s work at the Birger Sandzen museum that he curated.  </p>
  293. <p>After lunch at the student center, we returned to the library where we were treated to a slide talk from Dr. Jerry Martin, distinguished anthropologist on the WSU faculty. Dr. Martin has traveled the world collecting artifacts (legally and ethically), and had wonderful stories and incredible photos of his adventures.  In particular, two cultures in Papua, New Guinea that until just a few years ago were still headhunters and cannibals proved to be quite challenging.</p>
  294. <p>We then adjourned to the Wichita Art Museum where the group enjoyed viewing the current temporary exhibits, the permanent collection, and of course the library.  The last time the chapter met in Wichita, the new wing of the museum was under construction and we had only glimpsed the unfinished library space.  </p>
  295. <p>At the group dinner at the end of the day, we had time at leisure to discuss the fine presentations we saw and the various issues brought up in the Business Meeting.</p>
  296. <p>Saturday morning, a smaller group met for breakfast at Rachel&#8217;s home before touring more of Wichita or returning home. All felt that this meeting was a very successful combination of strong programming and fun socializing.</p>

  347. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The chapter’s Fall 2011 meeting was held in Columbia, Missouri from October 6th to 8th.   Anna Cranor, librarian at Stephens College, organized and hosted the meeting.  Thursday evening, October 6, the group met in downtown Columbia for the traditional get-reconnected dinner at the Broadway Brewery.  </p>
  348. <p>On Friday morning, we assembled again for a light breakfast at the Hugh Stephens Library Penthouse, a glass-walled room with spectacular views of Columbia and the surrounding countryside.  During the Business Meeting, a nominating committee for next year’s officers was appointed, and various other issues were discussed.  We tentatively accepted an invitation from Lois Crane to meet in Wichita in the Spring.</p>
  349. <p>Next was a presentation by Philip Coleman on the college’s Art Collection Inventory Project, followed by Anna Cranor speaking about a grant project for the college’s Costume Museum and Research Library.  We then visited the beautiful non-denominational Chapel (designed by Eero Saarinen) on our way to see the costume collection.  The collection’s curator shared her experiences, allowed us to visit the storeroom, and showed us around the current exhibit, the happy and colorful “Fashion Circus”.</p>
  350. <p>After lunch at the college’s Stamper Commons, we traveled to the campus of the University of Missouri to visit its Museum of Art and Archaeology, where a lively and informative docent was our guide.  After some free time to rest or do individual visits, we met again in downtown Columbia for dinner at Addison’s Restaurant.  Following that, we joined the large pedestrian crowd enjoying the “Artrageous Friday Gallery Crawl”.</p>
  351. <p>Saturday morning Anna hosted a diminished group for breakfast at her home, followed by a visit to Shelter Gardens, a private botanical garden operated by Shelter Insurance Company but open to the public.  </p>

  375. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The chapter&#8217;s Spring meeting was held in Fayetteville, Arkansas May 19-21.  Phillip Jones, Librarian at the University of Arkansas, was our generous host.  Thursday afternoon as members converged on the hotel, we explored Fayetteville&#8217;s charming town square and environs, then dined at a wonderful Thai restaurant.  </p>
  376. <p>On Friday we met at Mullins Library, the University&#8217;s main library, starting out with our Business Meeting.  At this meeting we approved a larger travel award amount and expanded it to include chapter meeting travel when appropriate, decided to create a Facebook page, and agreed to participate in ARLIS/NA&#8217;s official Mentorship program.   Later we were treated to a presentation by faculty member Leo G. Mazow on interdisciplinary research in art history, and we visited the Architectural Records Archive where we viewed drawings by E. Fay Jones and others.  Lunch was in a beautiful restaurant located in the university&#8217;s first women&#8217;s residence.   </p>
  377. <p>We carpooled north about 30 minutes to Bentonville, where we ate dinner at a wonderful southwest-themed restaurant on that town&#8217;s quaint town square (the one where Sam Walton&#8217;s original Five and Dime store still stands).  Next the group braved a thunderstorm to visit the site of the Walton family&#8217;s Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, now under construction.</p>
  378. <p>Saturday morning a smaller group breakfasted together in Fayetteville, then drove north to Bella Vista, the site of the Cooper Chapel, one of E. Fay Jones&#8217; most beautiful and serene creations.  This was a lovely way to end the meeting before we scattered to our homes in four states.</p>
