50.

 51.
Of the 4 lakh units, 3,17,754 units were sold domestically, while an additional 85,814 units were exported to other markets. Kia says that the Sonet commands 33.3% share in the company’s overall sales in the country. As per the carmaker’s report, 63% of Sonet buyers prefer its 1.2-litre, four-cylinder NA petrol and 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engines, while the rest 37% buyers opted for the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine.

 52.
Furthermore, Kia claims a consumer shift towards automatic variants. The 7-speed dual-clutch auto (available with 1.0-litre turbo-petrol) and 6-speed torque converter auto (available with 1.5-litre diesel) gearboxes were the choice for 28% Kia Sonet buyers, meanwhile the iMT (clutchless manual) recorded a 23% sales contribution. Another trend that was observed is that 63% buyers preferred a sunroof-equipped variant.

 53.
The made-in-India sonet is sold in many ASEAN, African, Middle Eastern markets, with Kia manufacturing both right- as well as left-hand drive versions of the compact SUV here. Kia India even manufacturered 7-seat Sonet for Indonesia back in 2021, however, this version was soon discontinued due to poor sales.

 136.
A motorist has been battling with car service chain Halfords after his car was wrecked in a collision while a staff member was test driving it.

 137.
The Alfa Romeo was supposed to be just getting an annual service, but the day ended with Ian Tubbs receiving a painful phone call from the Halfords Autocentre in Shirley, near Solihull, letting him know it had been in a crash.

 138.
It wasn’t a simple bump, however. The Alfa Romeo had clipped two other vehicles and had come to a stop, embedded in railings, with two wheels ripped off.

 139.
It looked “completely destroyed” by the incident, and Tubbs added: “The whole thing has been a nightmare.”

 140.
Initially Halfords stood by its employee’s claim he’d been doing only 25mph and the car had been hit by a third party vehicle, but a police investigation reported that witnesses described the Alfa as swerving in and out of traffic before crashing, the Guardian reports.

 141.
Tubbs was eventually offered £19,500 for the write-off by Halfords’ insurer, Aviva, but he contacted the Guardian because he says he’s still been left out of pocket by around £2,000.

 142.
He told it that was “really shocked” by the way Halfords behaved. The crash happened just before Christmas 2023 and Tubbs told the Guardian this month he is still battling to get what he feels is due.

 143.
Halfords told the Guardian: “We recognise the distress caused by the recent incident of a collision during a routine road test by our technicians. We followed the necessary procedures by notifying our insurance company.

 144.
“We’ve apologised to Mr Tubbs for the inconvenience caused and we’re working to resolve this matter directly with him.”

 145.
AM recent reported how Halfords fired a technician who had been caught speeding in a customer’s car during his service test-drive.

 146.
The foolish National Tyres and Autocare technician was caught by the Seat Ibiza’s dash cam and, after owner Gareth Lanka complained, Halfords, which owns National Tyres and Autocare, investigated and fired him

 165.
Shahar Bin-Nun explores how vehicle manufacturers can get the most out of connected vehicles

 166.

 167.
The future of the world’s roadways is connected. The emergence of vehicle wireless connectivity enables cars to talk with one another and to communicate with traffic infrastructure. Roads will soon be one buzzing hive mind. Imagine traffic signals telling a vehicle to stop, or one vehicle alerting another of a sudden obstruction or road hazard. This ability to collect and share real-time data will reinvent driving as we know it.

 168.
This all may sound like fantasy, but we’re on the fast road there. There will be more than 400 million connected cars on the road by 2025. These vehicles will communicate via different wireless channels and the cloud to improve safety and efficiency, all while generating valuable data. Recognising the vast potential for generating revenue, vehicle manufacturers are actively investigating how to leverage the capabilities of connected cars and the wealth of data they produce. Numerous strategies are under consideration for tapping into this emerging market.

 169.
Revenue routes

 170.
It’s evident that connected cars can increase both efficiency and safety, critical selling points in new vehicles. For instance, connected cars can improve advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with features like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and collision-avoidance systems. Connectivity improves ADAS by providing more real-time data to work with, making it a smarter and more valuable co-pilot. Advanced safety features like a smarter ADAS can be a compelling selling point for safety-conscious consumers.

 171.
Moreover, vehicles that can communicate with traffic infrastructure can save drivers time. Because vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) connectivity allows vehicles to receive real-time traffic information, it can provide the most accurate routes to avoid traffic and accidents. Buyers will likely be attracted to the prospect of saving time and fuel by avoiding congested areas.

 172.
The future of both road safety and road efficiency lies in the seamless communication between vehicles and infrastructure. This power is further amplified by implementing tactile sensing into vehicles to understand and monitor surface conditions like road gradient, tyre grip, and slipperiness, sharing vital data across networks to alert drivers promptly. Vehicles embedded with such tactile sensors—which enable a vehicle to feel the road—can collect and share information on road conditions where there’s usually a paucity of data, improving the vehicle’s selling point and utility.

 173.

Sensors situated on and around the wheels can give the vehicle information about road traction

 174.
Yet it’s not all about boosting the price point of a vehicle. There are other ways to create new revenue streams. The wealth of data being collected is valuable. Manufacturers can provide that data to businesses and government agencies. Aggregated and anonymised data from connected vehicles can offer valuable insights into traffic patterns, consumer behaviour, and city planning. These insights can be monetised through partnerships with data analytics firms.

 175.
AI additions

 176.
AI additions in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and V2I communication play a pivotal role in transforming raw communications data into practical insights. Advanced AI algorithms can analyse a multitude of factors, including the speed, direction, and trajectory of nearby vehicles, to predict potential traffic scenarios. For example, if an AI system detects a vehicle ahead rapidly decelerating, it can alert the driver or even trigger preemptive safety measures such as automatic braking in the connected vehicles involved.

 177.
Additionally, AI algorithms can analyse historical V2V data to identify patterns and predict driver behaviour. So, if a specific intersection tends to have a high frequency of sudden stops or unpredictable behaviour, AI can adapt vehicle responses accordingly. This adaptive capability becomes increasingly valuable in complex urban environments, where factors such as pedestrians, cyclists, and diverse traffic conditions demand a nuanced and context-aware approach.

 178.

 179.
We’re not just building vehicles, but generating the transportation infrastructure of the future

 180.

 181.
Manufacturers can also promote the ability of connected cars to receive over-the-air software updates, including additional AI training, allowing the vehicle to stay up to date on the latest features and improvements. So, buyers of connected cars will be investing in a vehicle that will continue to evolve and improve over time, without the need for a manual software update or visit to the mechanic. People will often pay more for simple convenience; i.e. you can charge more for a vehicle that updates itself.

 182.
Moreover, by leveraging AI-driven predictive analytics, vehicles can forecast wear and tear issues in advance, reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) for drivers. Proactive maintenance alerts can be issued, incentivising drivers to opt for manufacturer-recommended repairs and ultimately saving on repair costs over the vehicle’s lifespan.

 183.
Capitalising on capabilities

 184.
In the past, people thought that cars would fly, but never that they could talk. With emerging V2V and V2I communication, they can indeed talk. It’s just now a matter of capitalising on these capabilities to develop new features that improve both efficiency and safety.

 185.
But how to capitalise on connectivity effectively? Manufacturers are responding by creating value-added features while maintaining vehicle affordability, with novel features ranging from predictive maintenance to tactile sensing and improved ADAS. These advancements not only improve the driving experience, but also unlock new revenue streams for OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.

 186.
Nevertheless, the development of connected cars is not just about creating vehicles of the future with lucrative profits; it’s about constructing highly advanced communication networks that work seamlessly in-tandem. We’re not just building vehicles, but generating the transportation infrastructure of the future.

 209.
Formula E has taken the wraps off its revamped Gen3 Evo race car, claimed to be fastest accelerating FIA single-seater with a 0-100kph time of 1.86 secs. The update also introduces all-wheel drive, new tyres and sturdier bodywork.

 210.

 211.
Formula E claims 0-100kph time of 1.86 secs

 212.
Update introduces all-wheel drive, new tyres

 213.
Will be introduced for 2025 season

 214.

 215.
Gen3 Evo is meant to be an interim update between the current Gen3 cars and Gen4, which will be introduced for the 2026/27 season. Speaking to Autocar India, Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds said the aim of the update is to deliver “faster performing cars on track, more technology to be able to transfer [to road cars] and this continued journey of sustainability”.

 216.
Of course, the headlining figure is a 0-100kph time of 1.86 secs (0-60mph in 1.82 secs), which is claimed to be 30 percent quicker than a current F1 car and 36 percent quicker than the Gen3 car. For reference, F1 cars can accelerate from 0-60mph in roughly 2.6 secs. Formula E says all the upgrades should deliver a 2 percent performance gain, equating to a qualifying lap time that would be roughly 2 secs faster around the Monaco circuit.

 217.
“We’re growing very quickly. But in motorsport, the thing that captures attention the most is speed,” explains Dodds. “When we go out and tell people that the acceleration of this car is 30 percent faster than the current F1 car, I think that will capture the interest of sports fans around the world. And I hope people come and look at the racing for the first time and see how competitive it is, how exciting it is and they choose to stick around.

 218.
All-wheel drive, new tyres

 219.
The update also unlocks all-wheel drive for the first time in Formula E. But this will only be available to use during qualifying duels, race starts and Attack Mode. Formula E is hoping this addition will enhance “both performance and strategy”.

 220.
The all-weather Hankook tyres have also been revised to provide 5-10 percent more grip. And they will also be made from 35 percent recycled and sustainable materials (up by nine percent compared to the current Gen3 tyres).

 221.
The combination of these two should significantly alter driving dynamics. “All-wheel drive will require drivers to test it. I think they will get around that quite quickly because they’re some of the best drivers in the world,” said Dodds. “But the other thing that changes is the tyre and we know historically with racing drivers, often it is tyres and tyre changes that take longest for them to get used to because the performance is completely different.”

 222.
Since the introduction of the Gen3 cars, drivers have struggled to convert their Attack Mode boosts into overtaking moves. The combination of all-wheel drive and better grip should, in theory, help solve this issue to some extent.

 223.
More robust bodykit

 224.
The Gen3 Evo car also gets a new front wing, new rear winglets and a narrower nose. Formula E says the updated body kit has been designed to be “stronger, more robust and more aerodynamic”.

 225.
These cars will now be tested in Valencia later this year before being introduced for the 2025 season.

 251.
Cars built more than 40 years ago won’t need an MoT test officially, but we still recommend that you get it professionally checked anyway to make sure it’s safe to be used on the road.

 252.
It’s worth noting that if you are driving to the MoT test station (you are allowed to drive an unMoT’d and/or untaxed car to a pre-booked test), make sure you have the correct insurance to cover your journey and have checked that your tyres, brakes, steering and lights are still in working order before heading out on the road.

 253.
Can I SORN a car without the V5C logbook?

 254.
To SORN a car, you’ll need the 11-digit reference from the car’s V5C logbook. If you don’t have a V5C logbook, you’ll need a new one before you can SORN your car. To do this, you’ll need to fill out a V62 form along with your V890 form. There is a £25 fee for a new logbook.

 255.
Can I SORN a car and park it on the street?

 256.
No, you cannot SORN any vehicle that is parked on the street, as it would technically be using the road. This includes street parking in front of residential properties. A SORN car must be parked in a garage or on private land.

 257.
Is it illegal to drive a car that’s SORN?

 258.
It may occasionally be tempting to take a SORN vehicle for a spin – for example, if it’s been off the road for extended repairs and you want to road-test it, or you’ve just got back from an extended stay overseas.

 259.
However, unless you are on your way to a pre-booked MoT or other government checks, this is against the law. If you are caught, the authorities will take a very dim view. You could face prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500.

 260.
What happens if you don’t SORN a car?

 261.
If you fail to make a SORN declaration, the DVLA will know when your road tax expires, and the organisation can cross-reference with the national insurance database to find out which vehicles do not have valid cover.

 262.
A warning letter will be sent, and if you fail to take action, an automatic fixed penalty fine will be issued by post – it’s £80 if your road tax has expired (reduced to £40 if you pay within 28 days), or £100 if your car is uninsured.

 263.
If you fail to settle-up, you’ll be facing court prosecution, at which point magistrates could raise the fine to £1,000 – plus court costs – for either tax or insurance.

 264.
Don’t rely on the DVLA sending you a warning letter though, as they’re not actually obliged to do so. Even if you think you should have had a letter but it hasn’t arrived, you’re still responsible in law for the offence and liable to be fined.

 286.
The long-awaited Bajaj Pulsar NS400 will be launched on May 3 and we now have some insights into what to expect from this machine. The first point of note is that it will use the existing 373cc engine from the Bajaj Dominar 400 and it will not be based on the new gen 399cc motors from either Triumph or KTM. The main reason behind this is to keep costs under control, because the price is going to be a very important factor with this bike.

 287.

 288.
Could cost below the Rs 2 lakh mark

 292.
Bajaj Pulsar NS400 engine, design, India launch details

 293.
It is possible that the Pulsar NS400 will be priced below the Rs 2 lakh mark, which will make this the most affordable of the 400cc bikes. It will also be positioned comfortably below the Dominar 400 which currently costs Rs 2.30 lakh. For reference, the Bajaj Pulsar N250 costs about Rs 1.50 lakh, while the existing Pulsar NS200 is priced at Rs 1.54 lakh.

 294.
This will make the new Bajaj Pulsar NS400 easily the most budget friendly way to get 40hp levels of performance. Speaking of, the liquid-cooled motor might have some small differences in tune, but it will be mostly quite similar to the Dominar’s engine which produces 40hp and 35Nm of torque.

 295.
The chassis will continue to be the steel perimeter unit as seen in the NS200, but with some changes for this application. The NS400 also gets an upside down fork as seen in the spy image. What is worth looking forward to is that this will quite surely be a lighter motorcycle than the 193kg Dominar, but by how much remains to be seen.

 296.
Styling-wise, expect to see some changes over the existing NS200, but not dramatically so. Leaked images have shown that the bike will get a different headlamp with a single projector as seen on the newer Pulsar N160 and N250. What’s different here is a striking lightning bolt shaped LED DRL (similiar to the new NS200 & NS160) that runs on both sides of the projector lamp.

 297.
Given that the Pulsar NS400 will run a larger engine, we may see some differences in the bodywork to accommodate that – but again, it probably won’t have a dramatically different look to the current NS motorcycles.

 298.
Beyond that, expect to see the new LCD display that is now found on multiple Pulsar models. This display will bring in things like Bluetooth connectivity and the bike should have the same electronic assists (switchable ABS and traction control) that recently debuted on the updated Bajaj Pulsar N250.

 323.

 324.
Toyota has unveiled a new electric SUV, dubbed the bZ3X, at the Beijing motor show. A blocky five-seater developed in collaboration with Toyota’s Chinese joint venture partner, GAC, the bZ3X said to prioritise interior space and comfort. The bZ3X was unveiled at Beijing alongside the bZ3C, a fastback version of the sedan of the same name.

 325.

 326.
bZ3X gets minimalist interior and latest ADAS suite

 327.
Tech specs have yet to be revealed

 328.
Likely to use bZ3C sedan’s BYD-sourced battery

 329.

 330.
Its minimalist interior relegates most controls to a large infotainment touchscreen, in keeping with the Chinese market’s appetite for uncluttered interiors and digital functionality. Toyota claims that the bZ3X offers “the latest driver assistance systems”, although it has yet to clarify what level of assistance is offered by the car. Similarly, it has yet to detail technical specifications for the SUV.

 331.
Toyota’s other electric cars – the bZ4X and Chinese-market bZ3 sedan, which use batteries supplied by BYD – are both based on the e-TNGA platform, suggesting this is most likely the platform underpinning the bZ3X. This hasn’t been confirmed, however. The SUV is expected to use the same BYD-sourced lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack as the sedan, which yields a range of around 600km.

 332.
That is thanks in part to the sedan’s low drag coefficient of 0.22Cd, a product of aerodynamically friendly cues such as flush door handles and various air channels around its exterior.

 333.
Both the bZ3C and bZ3X will go on sale in China next year, and a company spokesperson told our sister publication Autocar UK that the latter is currently undergoing a “detailed evaluation” ahead of a potential European launch.

 334.
Toyota EVs for India

 335.
Although an India launch for the Toyota bZ3X is unlikely, the Japanese brand is working on a mass market battery electric that is based on the Urban SUV concept. Expected to arrive late in 2025, the EV will share a number of aspects with Maruti Suzuki’s eVX, and rival the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV, and the upcoming Duster-based EVs from Renault and Nissan.

 398.
Volkswagen Tayron SUV for India will get a three-row layout and a long list of features.

 399.

 400.
The all-new Volkswagen Tayron SUV has been officially revealed at the ongoing Beijing motor show 2024. China is the first market where this SUV will go on sale, and it will arrive in India sometime in 2025. Do note that the China-spec model is called the Tiguan L Pro and comes in a five-seater configuration. Some markets will also get a seven-seat iteration and will use the Tayron nameplate, although it is essentially a stretched version of the five-seater Tiguan revealed in September last year.

 401.

 402.
Tayron SUV gets two 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine options in China

 403.
Can be ordered with 2WD and 4WD setups

 404.
Gets three digital displays, including one for the front passenger

 405.

 406.
Volkswagen Tayron design, dimensions

 407.
The new Tayron SUV has a lot in common with VW’s latest global SUV line-up. The slightly rounded look on the new Tiguan is carried over to the Tayron, and it additionally gets an aggressive-looking front bumper with a contrast black finish for the fascia on the top-spec R variant; regular variants get a slightly less aggressive look.

 408.

 409.
The Tayron’s fascia is near identical to the 5-seater Tiguan.

 410.

 411.
In profile, the Tayron is very similar to the Tiguan with its blacked-out, flared wheel arches and large glasshouse, but its obviously longer than the latter, with most of the additional length having gone into the wheelbase. The new Tayron is 4,735mm long, 1,859mm wide and 1,682mm high. This makes it 197mm longer, 17mm wider and 43mm taller than the five-seat Tiguan, and the wheelbase is longer by 111mm. At the rear, the Tayron gets a well-sculpted tailgate, wraparound tail lamps with a connecting LED light bar, and a blacked-out rear bumper.

 412.
Volkswagen Tayron interior, features

 413.
The interior of the Tayron is identical to the new five-seat Tiguan that is on sale abroad. The dashboard has a minimalistic look that’s dominated by screens. There are many as three screens on offer – the main infotainment system, the digital instrument cluster and one on the passenger side of the dashboard. The infotainment display incorporates a backlit slider controller at the bottom, similar to the Tiguan. All three screens run VW’s latest MIB4 digital interface.

 414.

 415.
The Tayron’s dashboard features as many as three screens.

 416.

 417.
There are new-look AC vents at the sides, and the centre console has a very neat layout with a wireless charging pad, a rotary dial for the drive selector, audio controls and two cupholders. Interestingly, there’s also a large storage area below the centre console, much like we see in born-EVs. And while there aren’t many physical controls, the steering wheel does feature some traditional buttons and switches.

 418.
Some of the feature highlights include powered driver and front passenger seats with memory function, 10-point massage seats with heating and ventilation, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera, head-up display, dual-zone climate control and an ADAS suite.

 419.
Volkswagen Tayron powertrain, performance

 420.
In China, the Tayron is being offered with a sole 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine in two states of tune. Both versions come mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox and it gets an optional all-wheel drive system as well. The entry-level variant produces 184hp and 320Nm of torque, while the higher-spec variant produces 217hp and 350Nm of torque.

 421.

 422.
The Tayron gets a pair of 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines in China.

 423.

 424.
Volkswagen could also offer the 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel and 1.5-litre petrol plug-in hybrid powertrains from the five-seat Tiguan (available in other markets) with the Tayron. The PHEV uses a 19.7kWh battery pack that is claimed to offer an electric range of up to 100km. It remains to be seen which of these powertrains will be brought to India, although it is likely to be a petrol-only model. The new Tayron is based on Volkswagen’s new MQB EVO platform that also underpins the new Skoda Kodiaq, among other VW Group models.

 425.
Volkswagen Tayron India launch details

 426.
The new Tayron has been described by Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schafer as a global model. Following China, it will also be manufactured in Germany (Wolfsburg) and Mexico (Peubla). Additionally, the SUV will be assembled in India via CKD kits when it arrives here in 2025, and will rival the Jeep Meridian and the Skoda Kodiaq, among other similarly priced SUVs.
