57.

Beauhorn’s Virtuosos reveal the emotional intensity of music with a clarity and realism that others simply do not achieve, giving instant gratification of your aural desires: music that can reach into your soul and touch your deepest feelings. Only Virtuosos offer such Nirvana.

 58.
This page's content © 2000 Thomas Transducers, hosted now for informational purposes only.

 59.
the Virtuosos

 60.
The stylish Virtuosos are high-end floorstanding loudspeakers which was reveal the emotion of music with a clarity and realism that others just do not achieve. In this, they are truly exceptional.

 61.
Each uses a single, high quality wide bandwidth drive unit. Its high sensitivity and smooth impedance curve means that whether you use a low-powered valve amplifier or potent monoblocks, your amplifier will remain unstressed with significantly improved dynamics and increased headroom.

 62.
The Virtuoso’s speed of transient response is formidable, this gives great clarity and dynamic power as well as revealing the different instrumental timbres with extraordinary delicacy. The Virtuoso is fully horn loaded (unlike most “horn” speakers) and uses exponential profiles for both the bass and the midrange horns.

 63.
The cabinets are commendably compact and the beauty of the real cherry or maple veneer and the high quality of the cabinet making means that they will grace any living room of reasonable size.

 64.
The Virtuoso Bronze is equipped with a Lowther PM6C drive unit and the Beauhorn 6 cm diameter phase plug.

 65.
Careful research and development has produced a frequency response which is level from 80 Hz to 13 kHz ±3 dB, which is to say that there is no unwanted peak to cause colouration. They are notable for their sweetness in the high midrange/treble.

 66.
The Virtuoso Gold is fitted with a Lowther PM2C driver, giving enhanced transparency, resolution and a wider response, from 60 Hz to 14 kHz 3 dB. Has been likened to an electrostatic in its clarity. Parallel black moudings on the front faces add a stylish touch to the appearance.

 67.
The Virtuoso Reference has the choice of Lowther’s potent new drivers with neodymium magnet assemblies, the DX3 or the DX4. We found it hard to believe that a faster transient response than the Virtuoso Gold’s was likely until we heard the DX3’s. But the increase in resolution of the essential microdynamics was unmistakable, that beautiful, relaxed open sound that only horns can deliver, brought to perfection.

 68.
Then, with the advent of the DX4, came the flinging aside of the final, flimsy, unperceived, veil between us and the music, now revealed naked in all its natural glory for the first time.

 69.
You may think that this a bit over the top. But then, have you heard the Virtuoso References?

 70.
[table id=2 /]

 71.
Axial height of the drive unit is 710 mm (2’4″)

 72.
The impedance is 8 ohms nom.,although the average is about 11 ohms, making them very easy for low powered amplifiers to drive.

 73.
Power handling is 30W nom.

 74.
Dimensions are 336 x 1045 x 672 mm (13 x 41 x 26 in)/WxHxD.

 75.
Weight approx. 35kg/78lb.

 76.
High quality of cabinet making is a feature of all models, using cherry or maple real wood veneers. The Virtuoso loudspeakers are very beautiful to look at as well as to listen to.

 77.
Optimal placement

 78.
Optimal placement is room dependent, either corner placement or a position up to 1 m from the walls may be most satisfactory.

 93.

A Beauhorn Statement

 94.
Our aim is to produce music which sounds as natural as possible. We are not looking for excitement or to ‘move a lot of air’. We want to hear the music sound just as it did when the recording was made. We want the dynamics to sound real, not ‘impressive’. As the shaving soap ads used to say, “not too little, not too much, but just right”.

 95.
In the context of audio reproduction, simplicity is not merely a virtue, it brings very substantial benefits. We believe that ‘less equals more’; in the sense that the less you do to the signal as it passes through your system, the more closely it represents the original sound. For example, a shift in the signal phase degrades the stereo image (our brains use subtle phase differences to tell us where a sound is coming coming from – it’s not just a matter of loudness).

 96.
Since electronic crossovers in multiway speakers introduce just such phase shifts, they are to be avoided. That’s one good reason why our speakers use a single driver each and why the imaging is so good. A second reason is that to have midrange and treble sounds emanating from the same place, as we do, makes the image more precise, more focussed. You can hear the space between the instruments. Of course, if you use only one drive unit per speaker, it must cover the whole frequency range from bass to treble.

 97.
Lowther drive units are almost unique in having the bandwidth needed to do this. They are renowned not only for this, but also for the speed of their transient response. It is this which lends the extreme clarity and resolution of the finest detail to our speakers and which led a reviewer some years ago to attribute “…the finesse of an electrostatic and the timing of a Rehdeko…” to our Virtuoso Gold speakers. Of course, we now have the Virtuoso Reference models which are even faster.

 98.
Why do we choose to design horn loudspeakers? Because only a horn produces that fluid, open sound as though you were in the room where the musicians are playing. This is because a horn couples the drive unit cone to the air in the room so efficiently. And because they are so much more efficient than other loudspeakers, they need much less power from the amplifier to drive them. Their sensitivity is such that a CD player can happily feed a low powered valve amplifier without the need for a preamplifier, even. And the fewer stages you put the signal through, the better, we maintain.

 99.
Our products are designed for listeners who know what live music sounds like; discerning listeners who appreciate the highest quality. They are, we think, the organic, free range products of the audio world: not so cheap, not so easy to find, maybe, but don’t they taste a whole lot better!

 117.
Obligato SET Amplifier

 118.
Our Obligato amplifier is designed to complement very high efficiency loudspeakers like our Virtuoso range. As a result it features a very low residual noise level and so gives no audible hum from the speakers. This, it has to said, is true of very, very few amplifiers – including single-ended triodes.

 119.
Care has been taken to avoid the evil of capacitors in the signal path and the use of feedback. The Obligato is direct coupled, uses choke input filtering and is hard-wired with silvered copper wire in ptfe insulation. It has the very high resolution needed to match the transient response of our speakers.

 120.
A single-ended class A stereo power amplifier, the Obligato uses EL34 output valves in triode mode and gives 7 W per channel, plenty of headroom for unrestrained dynamics. With the Virtuosos it gives a stereo image of real depth and resolution. Together, they deliver the relaxed and involving natural sound which easily conveys the emotion of the music.

 121.

 122.
The front panel is finished with cherry veneer and features control knobs turned from solid cherry wood, so matching the speakers visually as well as sonically. The amplifier is provided with a volume control, so that it is not necessary to include a pre-amplifier in the system (less equals more, remember), although a high-quality switch unit will be required if more than one source is used.

 123.
Cognicenti will recognise that the name obligato is aptly derived from the musical term obbligato: “a musical accompaniment that is itself an essential part of the composition”. (The missing ‘b’ is on the corner of the facia, of course).

 131.
The Combination

 132.
The Virtuosos and the Obligato together make an outstanding combination, where the listener can compare musical performances and recording values with utter clarity.

 133.
Read David Wright’s article Of Horn Loudspeakers and Single-Ended amplifiers to understand just why they go so very well together.

 152.
Phase Plugs

 153.
The polished cherry ‘doorknobs’ in the centre of the drive unit cone are the Phase Plugs. They’re attached to the centre pole piece of the driver magnet, (although people sometimes think they’re attached to the cone). Our standard phase plug is about 6 cm ø (diameter) and is fitted to the Virtuoso Bronze and Virtuoso Gold models.

 154.
We have developed a new one of about 13 cm ø which enhances the stereo image almost magically. This is now the standard fitting for the Virtuoso Reference. Being a good deal more expensive to make, the price of the Virtuoso Reference has gone up. Phase plugs are interchangeable*, the Lowther black ones simply unscrew and ours screw in to replace them.

 155.
UK retail prices per pair [were listed at] approximately:

 156.

 157.
6 cm ø 60

 158.
13 cm ø 117

 159.

 160.
plus carriage and VAT

 161.
* Since the introduction of the DX4 drive unit, there are now two thread sizes in existence. Early DX4s were given the standard 3.5M thread used in all other Lowther drivers . Later ones have 4M threads. We can supply either, but we need to know which, of course.

 162.
Some Feedback on Phase Plugs:

 163.
from a customer:

 164.

 165.
“I have had the plugs on the Lowthers for several weeks now, and I must say that I would recommend that all Lowther owners using Medallion II cabinets at least try them on their systems. WhenI first replaced the original plugs, I found an incredible change in their presentation, as everything seemed to be a lot smoother than before.

 166.
I had friends over later, and they were equally impressed with the ‘new’ sound! …The Beauhorn plugs do take some getting used to however, as they make the entire presentation seem more recessed than the standard Lowther plugs, and the resultant sound is a lot more balanced and more imperturbable than before… which may put off some people who prefer the ‘live’ feel of the original. Certainly a question of taste, but I would definitely suggest trying them… all in all, possibly the best $80 I have ever spent on my hifi.” [AT, 19AUG00]

 167.

 168.
another quote from a purchaser:

 169.

 170.
“Well Bob says that his phase plugs have made a tremendous difference in getting rid of the upper midrange Lowther lump, and also calmed down the highs to the point that he no longer had listener fatigue. He highly recommended them.” [JVH, JUN00]

 190.

“Beauhorn were achieving their normal excellent results, the compliantly mounted (a la Townshend Seismic Stand) horn speakers being driven from a Nottingham Analogue front-end via the bespoke Pure Music amplifiers. PM reviewed the speakers a few issues back, but having heard this system a few times I’m leaning more and more towards the notion of reviewing it en masse. If they can do this in a hotel bedroom then I’d love to see (hear) what they can do in my front room. Mr Thomas, you have been warned. And while we’re about it please accept the second of my Real Music Awards.”

 226.
Over the course of the year 2000 we have raised the cabinet making specifications to include: better mitres; more coherent veneering along the front face and the cabinet top; and the use of midrange horn side pieces machined from solid cherry wood, thus enhancing the appearance of the Virtuosos. Our phase plugs are now machined on an automatic lathe, improving consistency.

 227.
From January, we are upgrading the internal wiring to a Nordost cable, producing slightly enhanced sound quality.

 228.
Added to these increased costs, Lowther drive unit prices are going up again in January. In consequence, from 1 January, 2001, Beauhorn UK prices will be as follows:

 260.
Beauhorn press release (circa 2000)

 261.
Beauhorn, the British horn loudspeaker specialist, now offers enhanced services enjoyment for to devotees of Lowther driven speakers. By replacing the standard phase plug (the power black bullet-shape in the centre of the cone) with a larger, hand-turned wooden one from Beauhorn they can effect a sweetening of the treble response.

 262.
Unsolicited quote:

 263.

“Well Bob says that his phase plugs have made a tremendous difference in getting rid of the upper midrange Lowther lump, and also calmed down the highs to the point that he no longer had listener fatigue. He highly recommended them.”

 264.
JVH

 265.
Lowther aficionados exist in their thousands, from America to the Far East. The many hundreds of pages of information and discussion about the various designs, mainly DIY jobs, existing on internet web sites are proof of an avid interest.

 266.
While they universally take delight in the quality of the midrange delivered by their Lowthers, many find the astringency of the treble with some recordings hard to endure.

 267.
In response to the volume of enquiries from Lowther owners wanting to improve their enjoyment, Beauhorn is now making the 6 cm diameter phase plugs available – without the rest of speaker. They simply screw into the drive unit pole piece in place of the existing plugs and while they are not claimed to resolve completely the problem, they do make a valuable difference.

 268.
Prices are: UK: 70 GBP including VAT, USA 100.00USD. Carriage and insurance included.
