My overdue OBED GVR 6 month review

A couple of folks requested that I did this review back when I acquired that bike. I refrained from doing so, as it was still brand new and I didn\x92t want the novelty factor to influence my decision, but I\x92m finally getting to it now.

Anyway, a little background about myself\x85I compete in gravel, XC mtb, and cyclocross racing, so my bike preferences do skew towards the racy side. This bike replaced a Canyon Grizl with 2x11 Shimano mechanical. I live and ride in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, so most rides end up at or above the 100\x92/mile ratio. I\x92m not a total weight weenie when it comes to bikes, but bike weight is a factor for me. I\x92m also particular about both gear range and spacing, so I lean towards a 2x setup.

The bike\x85it\x92s an OBED GVR, in size medium, that I got back in December. I specifically wanted a 2x12 GRX Di2 set up, and this was the only bike that wasn\x92t prohibitively expensive(at least at the time.) They were offering a free paint upgrade, so I sprung for the \x93Chili Pepper\x94 color with \x93Holo Black\x94 accents. The paint is pretty much a metallic gloss orange. Although not \x93free,\x94 another upgrade I sprung for was the FSA AGX K-wing carbon bars. They are labelled as 42mm wide, but really more like 41mm wide with a slight flare. They have different stem and cranks lengths as options, so I went with a 110mm FSA ACR stem and my preferred crank length of 170mm. The only other option I chose was the Fizik Argo saddle. They have wheel upgrades as well, but I went with the base model\x85more on that in a minute.

I should\x92ve taken some pictures of the unboxing, but nothing too amazing about that. Their packaging was pretty good and assembly very straightforward. I\x92m not new to consumer direct bikes, so it met my expectations. It even comes with a small toolkit, in case you somehow are lacking the requisite tools. Almost forgot, if you\x92re a fan of plain T-shirts with a bland company logo\x85you\x92re in luck, there will be one in the box!
Some other details: As far as wheels, the base wheels are very underwhelming alloy Sunringle wheels with 6 bolt hubs. I never even used them, as I already owned a set of Reserve 44/40 gravel wheels with S-Works Pathfinders. As a sidebar, I have tons of praise for the Reserve wheels. The 44/40s have different depths and widths between the front and back, but are part of the new-fangled trend towards wide tires in gravel. Gearing as delivered was a 48/31 paired to an 11-34 cassette, I swapped that out for a more climb-friendly 11-36. For pedals, I'm running single-sided Garmin Rally power pedals.

The current set up:

i'm wanting a new helmet. i currently am using a bontrager helmet with wavecel. i my third season with it and this year i seem to be sweating more and more. age maybe? more aggressive riding? regardless, i feel the wavey stuff impedes air flow and i'm wanting some more air flow. have seen another helmet at LBS but had something called koroyd. sales guy says it has better air flow but it seems way too similar. anyone with experience using this i'd like to hear about it.

i have a chrome dome and wear a bandana underneath to help manage the sweat. it helps but i still find i need to wring it out at least 2 times on 30mi rides. in the end i am looking for max air flow with protection of course.

Hey folks, I\x92m working on setting up some new handlebars and shifters and was working on running cables today (my first time for all of this). I was moving along nicely with the cables until I got to the right shifter. I followed the Shimano instructions by actuating the (b) lever 9 times or more. I did this a few times as I was figuring stuff out and playing around nervously. I ran the cable and gave the shifting a go. All of a sudden the (a) lever has lost the ability so complete it\x92s full range of motion and makes a hard stop at what seems like the first shift click. I have a video but since I\x92m new here I\x92m not allowed to post it. I\x92m a bike and mechanic noob so all advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Specialized Tarmac 2005 original stem has no cutout at the steerer clamp. It appears to be carbon wrapped aluminum with exposed aluminum in the clamping area. The handlebar end has an aggressive sandpaper finish. Pre grip paste design, I guess. Stems for sale do not provide photos of the clamping area.

The original stem is so heavy it offsets the light weight carbon bars. And it is too long for me. But what is most concerning is the carbon steerer and the Specialized warranty instructions. Threads dismiss the danger of cutouts and discuss beveling and how stem XYZ has not failed them yet. But carbon repair analysts are concerned about the impressions these cutouts leave on the steerer. It\x92s intuitive that more clamping surface can allow less carbon crushing torque while still keeping the stem or bars from slipping.

Where can such a no cutout stem be found?
The last decade or so I've found Schwalbe Marathon Supremes good (wonderfully compromise wet grip and puncture resistance) but now I need to replace my tires and... the Supremes are discontinued
Considering alternatives including Marathon GT 365, Green Marathon, and Continental Urban Contact (in 700x35/37/40c).
Any thoughts, experiences, or suggestions?

Are there multiple sizes of shifter bosses for the mid 80s? Is there a work around? Really would like to avoid taking a Dremel tool to the shifter boss.

Hi all, I would like to request some help in identifying this mystery Performance bike. I'd hazard a guess that it's from the mid to late 80s based on the Performance decals, but I could be wrong. Tange Prestige tubing throughout, chromed Shimano EF dropouts, Eisho (?) bottom bracket shell, and no serial number. Google isn't much help; searching "80s Performance bike" brings up results for 80s performance road bikes, not 80s Performance-branded road bikes. Anyone have any leads or ideas what this could be?
Also, would anyone like to suggest how I should build this up? I was thinking of going the restomod route, something not too expensive.
Nice frame, clean brazing. Braze-on front derailleur tab. Bottom bracket is a Sugino Mighty MW-86.
Another Performance decal. Campagnolo headset with white grease inside, so it might have been originally installed on the bike.
Shimano EF dropouts.
Eisho bottom bracket shell?
