50.

 51.
 52.
The Portland Trail Blazers have a pair of lottery picks. Could they trade up in the 2024 NBA Draft?

The Portland Trail Blazers left Sunday’s NBA Draft Lottery with the Nos. 7 & 14 overall picks, which isn’t bad, but considering the team had a bottom-three record this season, it could have been better.

 53.
That being said, the Blazers are one of two teams with multiple lottery picks, and that could help them if they want to trade up in the draft. But the question is, should they?

 54.
Why They Should

 55.
The Blazers already have several developmental players on the roster, especially in the backcourt with Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe. Anfernee Simons will also eat up a lot of playing time.

 56.
The Blazers have 11 players under contract for next season, and that’s before the decision to accept Dalano Banton’s team option or guaranteeing the salaries of Jabari Walker and Toumani Camara, all of which should happen.

 57.
This means that Portland would have 14 players before drafting two more lottery picks, who both should expect to play at some point this season. Cuts and trades will be made, likely with players like Robert Williams III and Matisse Thybulle, among others, but it doesn’t change the fact that the Blazers have a lot of young talented players that need minutes in order to develop.

 58.
Therefore, adding two more players to that mix could be negative for Portland, as they may not be able to give both lottery picks the proper reps. Sure, one or both could go to the Rip City Remix, but with higher picks, you would hope they can play on the NBA level.

 59.
Why They Shouldn’t

 60.
It is a generally weaker class compared to years’ past, but the Blazers are in the middle of a rebuild and need all the help they can get.

 61.
That’s why making a trade and punting on a pick is a bad idea, because Portland may be passing on a future piece to the puzzle.

 62.
If there is a prospect the Blazers believe fits their scheme that they may not be able to get at No. 7, they should be willing to move on from No. 14 or other assets to get the player higher in the draft. Teams like the Houston Rockets at No. 3 or the San Antonio Spurs at No. 4 could be open for business.

 63.
However, given the parity of the top picks, it’s possible that Portland may have a player it considers as a top-three prospect still on the board at No. 7.

 64.

 86.
The Detroit Pistons are looking for a new president of basketball operations, but it won’t be former Portland Trail Blazers executive Neil Olshey.

It’s been about 2.5 years since the Portland Trail Blazers moved on from Neil Olshey as president of basketball operations following an investigation of toxic workplace allegations, but he is receiving interest in jobs around the league.

 87.
According to Yahoo Sports insider Jake Fischer, the Detroit Pistons were interested in interviewing Olshey for their vacant president of basketball operations position, but the former Blazers executive was not interested.

 88.

Potential candidates for the position have been informed they will have the agency to dismiss Weaver from his post, league sources told Yahoo Sports. But the early returns of Detroit’s search have not seemed to net much forward progress for the Pistons. While Detroit hoped to interview Milwaukee lead executive Jon Horst, the Bucks blocked those advances and did not allow Horst permission to do so, sources said. Other names, like former Trail Blazers general manager Neil Olshey, sources said, declined the Pistons’ outreach to interview for the role as well.

 89.
Olshey, 59, was with the Los Angeles Clippers from 2003-12 and moved his way up from director of player personnel all the way to general manager before joining the Blazers, where he was an executive for nine years before his firing.

 90.
Olshey has been without a job since the Blazers fired him as he has stepped away from the sport and spotlight. Perhaps he will look for jobs in the future, but the fit isn’t there with him and the Pistons, who have had the league’s worst record for each of the past two seasons.

 110.
Portland Trail Blazers fans should shift their attention towards the NBA Draft.

The Portland Trail Blazers now know that they will be picking at Nos. 7 & 14 in the NBA Draft next month, along with a pair of second-round picks.

 111.
Here’s a look at who the team took in the lottery of ESPN’s latest mock draft with Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo:

 112.
No. 7 pick Nikola Topic

 113.

The Blazers aren’t far enough along in their rebuild to worry too much about positional fit, and Topic’s combination of size and playmaking ability differentiates his skill set from the guards they already have on the roster. Portland can take a swing on the best available talent here, envisioning Topic as part of a multi-playmaker attack alongside Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe and Anfernee Simons. At this spot in the draft, Topic is an intriguing bet, with his feel and passing ability likely to help enhance opportunities for others around him. — Woo

 114.

 115.
No. 14 pick (via Warriors) Tidjane Salaun, Cholet

 116.

Salaun would be another intriguing addition to Portland’s frontcourt, helping to balance out a guard-heavy roster. His potential to space the floor, supply energy and versatility, and that he doesn’t need designed touches, makes him an interesting fit with the future in mind. Salaun is still raw in important areas of his game — he’ll need seasoning and time to reach his potential — but he should be an appealing project if he can make strides as a shooter and decision-maker. — Woo

 117.

 159.
 160.
Portland grabs a surprise with the seventh pick in Kevin O’Connor’s first post-lottery mock draft.

In the first mock draft after the Atlanta Hawks shocked the NBA by winning the 2024 Draft Lottery, The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor found a surprise falling into Portland’s lap. The Trail Blazers picked up Zaccharie Risacher at number seven. Risacher, who has been listed as a top three pick in some drafts, dropped due to other positions of need by teams with the first six picks. With the tiers unclear in this draft, “drafting for need” is expected to be far more common in 2024 than most years.

 161.
Risacher, who has a long history with the Blazers’ Rayan Rupert, is a 6’8” forward from France. O’Connor notes, “Risacher is the choice here with his flashes of shot-making as a high-end role player who could flourish with a smaller playmaking guard.”

 162.

 163.
With the fourteenth pick, the Blazers were projected to pick Ja’Kobe Walter, a 6’5” wing out of Baylor. O’Connor says, “Walter didn’t meet expectations but still flashed enticing scoring upside that could be a great fit next to Henderson, Risacher, and Sharpe.”

 164.

 165.
Surprisingly, this exact combination of players was listed by Sam Vecenie a few months ago, except with the assumption Portland owned picks one and fourteen.

 185.
Portland might have been fortunate to end up where they did.

After enduring years of bad fortune and slight missteps in draft order and execution, the Portland Trail Blazers might have finally gotten a break. The Blazers earned the 7th overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft by virtue of today’s NBA Draft Lottery, adding the 14th overall pick as payment from a trade with the Golden State Warriors last summer.

 186.
Normally these results would be a disappointment. Portland had only a 16.4% chance of landing in the seventh position. 81.4% of the time, they would finish with a pick between 1-6 overall. They had a 13.2% chance of winning it all, barely lower odds than finishing in the spot they did.

 187.
Two factors turn this into a case of good timing rather than bad luck for the Blazers.

 188.
This draft class has no clear leader or leaders. There’s no consensus first-overall pick, no superstar on the table, and certainly no generational player like Victor Wembanyama in the 2023 NBA Draft. Most experts are having a hard time agreeing on a Top 10, even. This draft is a total crap shoot. Any talent to be have will be diamond-in-the-rough variety. Breakout players might be just as available (or absent) in the mid-lottery as at the top.

 189.
Rookie scale contracts do not change. The player Portland selects seventh will have a base salary of $5.7 million, give or take a million in potential raises. The first pick is slated to make $10.5 million, plus a potential couple extra.

 190.
Portland is already committed to $167 million in salary next year without rookies signed from the draft. The luxury tax threshold is projected to be $171 million. They don’t have a lot of headroom.

 191.
Adding in that 14th pick, the Blazers will probably owe around $10 million to their upcoming lottery selections. Had they won the lottery, they’d be over $15 million. That doesn’t seem like a huge difference, but there’s a serious argument to be made that the Blazers would be adding little, if any, value ascending from seventh to first. Every million they added, though, would be another million they’d need to cut back on in trades before the end of the season to avoid paying tax penalties, plus missing out on end-of-year windfalls for non-tax teams.

 192.
There’s a chance that the first overall pick could have held enough value—either in selecting or trade—to justify wanting it. Perhaps a star will emerge from the combine and pre-draft team workouts. Being able to select from the entire pool of draftees holds enticement.

 193.
If they weren’t going to win—and maybe even if they were—the Blazers couldn’t have ended up in much better position than they did, getting to take a flyer on a player without having to pay through the nose for it.

 194.
Missing out on Wembanyama last year was a franchise-defining moment. The 2025 NBA Draft may hold others. Losing out in 2024 probably doesn’t make a difference and may even hold benefits. If there was a year to get shafted in the lottery, this was it. After years of rough luck, Portland’s ship finally came in, or at least remained docked at the right time.

 214.
Listing every pick the Blazers own, or will potentially own, from 2024 to 2031.

Here is a recap of all the future NBA Draft picks of the Portland Trail Blazers. Some picks depend on other draft events, and we’ve labeled those accordingly. Here is the legend:

 215.
Regular font = Mostly known, but final details are yet to be determined
Bold = Status known, with no prior-year dependencies
Italics = Depends on a previous year’s draft events.

 229.

 230.
2025

 231.
First Round

 232.

Blazers may own their pick, if it lands #1-14.
Note: If it lands #15-30, Chicago Bulls owns it. Otherwise it rolls over to 2026.

 233.
Second Round

 234.

Blazers may own Atlanta Hawks’ pick, if it lands #31-40.

 235.

 236.
2026

 238.

 239. Blazers may own their pick, protected for #1-14, if not conveyed to Chicago in 2025.
Note: If it lands #15-30, Chicago Bulls owns it. Otherwise it rolls over to 2027.
 240.

 241.
Second Round

 242.

Blazers may own Memphis’ second-round pick, if it lands #31-42.

 243.

 244.
2027

 245.
First Round

 246.

 247. Blazers may own their pick, protected for #1-14, if not conveyed to Chicago in 2025-26.
Note: If it lands #15-30, Chicago Bulls owns it. Otherwise it rolls over to 2028.
 248.

 249.
Second Round

 250.

Portland owns their second-round pick, unless it lands between #56-60, and is lower than the Pelicans’ second round pick. If both those happen (unlikely), the pick is sent to Boston.

 251.

 252.
2028

 253.
First Round

 254.

 255.

 256. Blazers may own their pick, protected for #1-14, if not conveyed to Chicago from 2025-27.
Note: If it lands #15-30, Chicago Bulls owns it. Otherwise Chicago gets Portland’s second-round pick.
 257.

 258.

 259. Blazers may have right to swap first-round picks with Milwaukee Bucks.
Note: This swap is protected for #15-30, which means if Portland’s first-round pick is conveyed to the Bulls in this draft, the swap with the Bucks does not occur.
 260.

 261.

 262.
Second Round

 263.

 264.
Blazers may own their pick, unless their own 2025-28 first-round picks have been #1-14. Then this pick belongs to Chicago.

 265.
Golden State’s pick (unprotected)

 270.

 271.
Blazers own their pick.

 272.
Milwaukee Bucks’ pick

 273.
Boston Celtics’ pick

 274.

 275.
Second Round

 276.

No picks owned by Portland.
