Domain to Google Sites (Personal Account) | Tips and Tricks Episode 25

 2.

 3.
4. Ever tried to map a custom domain to a Google Site NOT created in G Suite but with your own personal account? Here's how to do it!
5.
6. Using Google Sites, everyone can now create amazing looking websites and map these to their domains. You can purchase your own domain via domains.google.com or any other domain provider.
7.
8. Once you have access to your domain, simply prove ownership, add txt and CNAME Records to your DNS settings of the domain and you are good to go.
9.
10. The video walks you through all the steps to do this.
11.
12.
13.

 14.

 15.
16. If you are on a G Suite account managed by a domain, then you will have to map your site using a different technique: See the following video: https://youtu.be/uPHYsB4xSuQ
17.
18. If you enjoyed this video and found it helpful, share it with a friend using the link: https://youtu.be/ZJpKRBHXwu8
19.
20. Find the Search console mentioned in the video here: https://search.google.com/search-console
21.
22. Thank you for watching and don't forget to Share.
95. I have known Tim for a few years as an engaging presenter at AppsEvents Summits in Asia. Tim started out as an ICT Teacher in Wales and Spain before taking a role as an edTech coordinator at Stamford American School in Hong Kong.
96.
97. We talk about what it’s like to live and work in Hong Kong (one of my favorite cities in the world) and then get into the evolution of the ICT teacher role and how it has overlapped and evolved into the Tech Coach role. We also get into teaching coding and robotics in younger grades.
98.
146.
147. In this introductory discussion about Chromebooks, we talk about everything to do with implementing Chromebooks in International Schools. Between the three of us, we have been lucky enough to have been involved in multiple Chromebook projects and had a lot of opportunities to see what best practices have worked time after time.
148.
149. Basics
150.

 151.
Where do you need to be before looking at Chromebooks:

 152.
Already using G Suite?

 153.
Using Google Classroom?

 154.
Using Nothing? - use Chromebooks as a start/cheap web-ready devices?

 155.
Getting leadership buy-in

 156.
Getting tech team on board

 157.

 158.

 159. Types of implementation
160.

 161.
Pilot projects

 162.
1 to 1

 163.
BYOD

 164.
Chromebook carts

 165.

 166. Key factors for success
167.

 168.
Combining with Chrome use on existing PC’s (e.g. computer labs, support staff, SLT)

 169.
Types of devices

 170.

 171. Training
172.

 173.
We have a thing or two to say about this ;)

 174.
Initial training: Admins and key users

 175.
Coordinating the training of new staff each academic year

 176.
Cyber Cafe model (h/t to John Mikton)

 177.
Encouraging staff to become Certified. Build a Google community

 178.
Building a multi-year training plan

 179.

 575.
576. You may or may not know this, but 49% of mobile gamers in the US are women, but only comprise 28% of the gaming industry. Something is wrong with that picture and we’re aiming to change it with your help. Change the Game Design Challenge is a Google Play program in partnership with Girls Make Games to make mobile gaming truly inclusive by introducing a possible career in gaming to young women at an early age and empowering the next generation of Game Changers.
577.
578. By exciting your students about the world of mobile gaming, you have the power to open new doors to a career they may have never thought possible. And in doing so, you and your students can fuel a movement to reshape an industry. You only have to look to last year’s winners now actively pursuing gaming careers and education to get a sense of the success we can keep building upon. Together, we can do this. Together, we can Change the Game.
579.
580. This is our invitation to get your students in the game. Coding and gaming experience is welcome but in no way needed to participate. As long as they have an imagination and can write out their vision, they can enter. The grand prize winner will receive a $15,000 college scholarship and $10,000 tech donation to their school. Five finalists will have their game made and launched on the Google Play Store for everyone to play. Winners also get a VIP trip to showcase their game design at a special event, receive mentorship from leaders in the industry, and join the celebration of women in gaming.
581.

 582.

 585.
586. As partners, we want to help your students to rise to the top. That’s why we’ve included downloadable attachments containing classroom activity materials and exercises to take into school and help get the ideas flowing. A future game designer may be in your classroom!
606.
607. Last week I joined Louise Jones, Google for Education UK Regional Manager in the impressive City of Glasgow College to support a group of Google Educators move their Certified Trainer application forward. In addition to some practical tips around the skills assessment and application video we spent most time in activities and discussions around pedagogy, learning and effective training for teachers.
608.
609. Check out this twitter moment for the two days.
610. Advance to Google Certified Trainer March 19
 611.
612.
613. Louise's vast experience of digital learning and consulting with school communities to develop technology rich environments prior to her current role based in Scotland brings great value to the process and bases the workshop in evidence based practice.
614.
615. As a Google for Education Professional Development partner I have been fortunate to work on a variety of training projects for schools, organisations and directly for Google for Education and took the opportunity to share my own tips and tricks for effective training. Long term evaluations of technology with consultation with parents, teachers and learners lead to the best implementations, however often you are not given much time to showcase the potential impact of technology. At AppsEvents we have developed some demonstrations that showcase the pedagogical and time-saving impact of G Suite. Some of you may have seen these in action at BETT or ISTE where our trainers have staffed the demo bar for the last couple of years, giving quick hands-on demos.
616.
617. At the trainer event we shared the resources and tips for setting up for an effective demo.
618.
619.

 620.
Have a story or theme

 621.
Create accounts for users you know have access to everything they will need

 622.
Develop a set of Docs, Slides and Sheets to share via Classroom

 623.

 624.
625. It was amazing to be able to share trainer stories with the group and pick up their own tips from the training they are carrying out with educators across Scotland. One stand out example is the use of student digital ninjas! Find out more about the students helping Google for Education reference school Ormiston Primary embed great digital learning by following the OrmiNinjas!
626.
627. Both Louise and I are excited to see the attendees achieve Google Certified Trainer status and join the existing eight Scottish Trainers to support the spread of G Suite tools throughout Scottish education. To find trainers near you, check out the new updates Edu Director from Google.

Free CPD by Google for Education and Acer

 651.
652. By Jane Vestil
653.
654. Your Gmail account allows you to access all of Google. Therefore, it is very important that your email account stays safe. This article outlines some security measures you can follow.
655.
656. 1. Make sure that you have a strong password.
657.
658. The challenge here is to create a password that is easy to remember but hard for others to guess.
659.
660. There are a lot of suggestions available but most websites use the below best practices:
661.

 662.
Choose a password that is at least 8 character long.

 663.
Your password should contain at least one of the following: lower case letter, upper case letter, numeric value, and a special character.

 664.
Avoid using names or nicknames of family members, friends, and even pets.

 665.
Avoid using information about yourself such as name, nickname, username, birth date, phone number, address, plate number and many others.

 666.
Avoid sequential numbers and letters.

 667.

 668.

 669. Additional recommendations we should be mindful of are:

 670.

 671.
Don't use dictionary words or any word from any language.

 672.
Don't use only 1 password for several accounts.

 673.
Update your passwords every 3 to 6 months.

 674.
Never write your passwords down.

 675.
Don't share your password to anyone.

 676.
Never send your password to anyone via email, SMS, or instant messaging apps.

 677.
Refrain from using public computers especially when trying to access highly sensitive websites such as online banking.

 678.
Change your password immediately if you feel that it is compromised.

 679.
Don't use the browser's "Remember password" option if you are sharing a computer with someone.

 680.
Don't type your password when someone is watching behind or beside you.

 681.

 682. The article from Webroot, How Do I Create a Strong Password?, illustrates very clever examples on how you can create passwords that are hard to guess but easy for you to remember.
683.
684. There are the four key elements mentioned in the said article
685.
686.

 687. Using a phrase or acronym that means something to you or something you can easily associate with a particular type of website.

 688.
689. 2BorNot2B_ThatIsThe? (To be or not to be, that is the question - from Shakespeare)
690.
691.

 692. Using passwords with common elements, but customized to specific sites.

 693.
694. ABT2_uz_AMZ! (About to use Amazon) ABT2_uz_BoA! (About to use Bank of America)
695.
705.
706. 2. Check if your emails are not being forwarded to an unknown email address.
707.
708. If you have set up email forwarding, there is a possibility that your password reset request email will also be sent to that other email address. Most of the time, people with multiple email address use this feature to consolidate their email messages in one inbox. However, email forwarding can also be used to forward certain types of messages to another person. Therefore, if you have enabled this Gmail feature, double check that you are not forwarded to an unknown email address and that proper filtering are used if in case you are forwarding specific type of email messages to a different person.
709.
710. If you want to learn how to enable or disable email forwarding in Gmail, check out this Google resource: Forward mail to another account.
711.
712. Aside from automatic email forwarding, Gmail has another feature that allows users to delegate his or her email account to another which enables that person to send and receive messages for his or her behalf. Simply put, email delegation is like having several mailboxes in a single interface.
713.
714. You can access another user's messages and reply to those emails using his or her email address instead of your own without having to log out from your own account. This is particularly used by organizations and teams. If you want to learn more about email delegation, please see this Google resource: Set up mail delegation.
715.
716. Just like in email forwarding, to avoid unauthorized access, make sure that you only delegate your email account to a trusted user. Note that if the filter option also have a "forward to" feature. Make sure to review all your filters as well.
717.
718. 3. Make sure to enter valid and up to date password recovery options.
719.
720. In the event that you forgot your Gmail account password, Google offers several options for you to recover it. Google can send you a password reset link to a recovery email address. You can also add a mobile phone number to your Gmail profile, where you can receive a code via text message to reset your password. Comparing recovery email address versus a registered mobile number, the latter is a much secure and convenient option because you physically possess the phone. Aside from that, Google can also use your registered mobile number to challenge users trying to break into your account.
721.
722. It is important to note that Google guarantees your number won't be used by telemarketers. Another benefit of adding a mobile phone on your Gmail account is that you get SMS notifications when changes have been made to your account such as a password change. For instance, if you forgot to log-out from a public computer and somebody tried to change your password, you will get an SMS message when the change occurs. And since you have your phone with you, you can immediately make necessary changes to prevent further intrusion.
723.
724. To learn more about the various password recovery options available, please refer to this resource: Adding recovery options to your account
725.
726. The easiest way to set this up is to follow Google's Security Checkup. Go to https://myaccount.google.com/security-checkup now to secure your account.
727.
728. 4. Check for unusual access or suspicious activity in your account.
729.
730. Google has a security feature which logs your last 10 account activity. This includes recent activity that happened any time of the day that your mail was used via a regular browser, a mobile device, a POP email client, a third party application. You can see here details of the activity, associated location, IP address, date and time.
731.
732. To access this security log, just find the "Last account activity" link at the bottom right part of every Gmail page and click on "Details".
733.
734.

 741.

 742.

 743. If you see any suspicious activity, if it is through a third party website, immediately revoke its access. Otherwise, change your Gmail password ASAP!
744.
745. The easiest way to set this up is to follow Google's Security Checkup. Go to https://myaccount.google.com/security-checkup now to secure your account.
746.
747. You may also choose to "Sign out all other Gmail web sessions".
748.
749. If you want to learn more about your last account activity, please visit this Google resource: Last account activity
750.
751. 5. Check for unfamiliar content in your signature box and auto responder settings.
752.
753. Go to your Gmail account settings by clicking on the gear icon found on the upper right portion of the Gmail interface.
754.
755. Make sure also that there is no unfamiliar content or code in your signature or vacation responder box. These 2 settings are found under the "General" settings tab. Remove any content you don't remember adding.
756.
757.

 758.

 759.
760. 6. Make sure that all your software is up to date, especially your anti-virus and anti-malware app.
761.
762. 7. Activate 2-Step Verification
763.
764. Google's two-factor authentication is a way to secure your account using 2 things, something you know (password) and something you own (mobile phone).
765.
766. If you enable this feature, each time you attempt to login to your Google account, aside from keying in your password, you will be prompted to enter a verification code that will be either sent to your phone via SMS, voice call, or through an independent mobile app.
767.
768. If you don't have a cell signal, there is nothing to worry as you can also generate a list of backup codes which you can print or write on a piece of paper. This will be very handy if you travel and don't have a good reception.
769.
770. Note that these codes will only work once. In case you have used up all 10 back up codes, you can easily request for a new batch. Once logged in, you have the option to tell Google to remember that machine you are using so you won't have to authenticate again. You can also add back up phone numbers just in case if your primary number won't work. This is by far the most secure way to access an online account. Learn more about the 2-Step Verification here.

 772.
773. Back in October 2018, Allison shared with us some great ways to use the different types of inboxes and the tabbed features to manage a mass of emails in our inboxes. These tools are great and an integral part of managing a busy inbox. In this week's post, we are going to look at labels in Gmail, and how we can use labels to further organise and segment our email.
774.
775. Labels are great for:
776.
777.

 778.
anyone receiving more than a handful of emails a day (ie any educator!)

 779.
anyone dealing with different groups of people (for example, students and parents)

 780.
anyone who frequently loses that meeting agenda email!

 781.
...basically, labels are great for any teacher wanting to better manage their email!

 782.

 783.

 784. What is a label?
785.
786. Labels are Gmail's alternative to folders. An email can have multiple labels - you can, therefore, add multiple categories to an email.
787.
788.
789.
790. An email message with labels will look similar to the above message, this message has two labels (notice the colour of the labels). Once a label has been applied to a message you can quickly access it by using the left-hand menu underneath the Compose button.
791.
792.

 793.

 794.
795. Clicking on any of these labels will filter your email and show you only those emails that have been labelled that way.
796.
797. How Do I Make A Label?
798. There are several ways to create a label ():
799.
800. 1. Select one or more messages with the checkbox, click and hit 'Create new'
801.
802.

 803.

 804.
805. 2. From within any message click the labels button as above
806.
807. 3. Go to Settings (Gear Icon) >> Settings >> Labels >> 'Create new label'
808.
809. 4. Scroll to the bottom of the labels list on the left and 'Create new label'
810.
811. How Do I Add A Label To A Message?
812.
813. You can now go ahead and add labels to your messages manually, select the message, click the label button and then choose the label you wish to add. But....adding labels can be even easier...
814.
815.
816.
817. With Gmail you can add labels automatically!
818.
819. That's right, depending on the sender, content, date or other conditions, Gmail will let you set up 'rules' to automatically apply a label.
820.
821. For example, you want all the email from the counsellor team to be labelled counsellor.
822.
823. Firstly, from your Gmail search bar tap the little down arrow.
 824. Now in the From field enter the email address of your counsellor:
825.
828.

 829.

 830.

 831.

 832.

 833.

 834.
835. Secondly, tap on 'Create filter' in the lower part of the search window:
836.
837.

 838.

 839.
840. Lastly, using 'Apply the label', choose the label you want to always apply to this sender, and then click Create Filter:
841.
842.

 843.

 844.
845. And that's it, you have just created your first automated label!
846.
847. Advanced: Sub-Labels
848.
849. Now that we are familiar with creating and adding labels, we can, in fact, create 'nested' labels. In Gmail we call nested labels 'sub-labels'.
850.
851. For example, you are receiving email from the Science teachers so they are all labelled as Science. Underneath the Science label you now how Middle School and High School labels to make it easier to filter down to specific grade levels.
852.
853. Hover over any label in the left-hand menu, tap the 'three dots' and you will see 'Add sublabel' at the bottom.
854.
855. Colour Coding Your Labels
856.
857. Now that you are started with labels, you will very quickly find that you are labelling every email!
858.
859.

 860.

 861.
862. By clicking on the 'three dots' next to any label, you have the option of choosing a label colour - and what's even better is you can create up to 3,136 custom colour labels! That should be enough labels for even the busiest of inboxes.
863.
864. Can I Show/Hide Labels From The List?
865.
866. Yes you can! It is very easy to hide a label from the left-hand list. Hover over any label, tap the 'three dots' and under 'In Label List' there are three options:
867.

 868.
Show

 869.
Show if unread

 870.
Hide

 871.

 872. You can also show or hide messages this way as well, use the Show/Hide settings under the menu for 'In message list'.
873.
874. Please note if you do not see a label in the list on the left, it may be under the 'More' heading at the bottom. You can easily drag and drop labels from the 'More' section to the main list and vice versa.
875.
876. Ordering Labels
877.
878. Labels are ordered alphabetically, you can override this by appending a number to the front of the label, for example:
879.

 880.
Home

 881.
Work

 882.
Work (non-urgent)

 883.

 884.

 885. Can be reordered by adding numbers to the front of the label name:
886.

 887.
1-Work (non-urgent)

 888.
2-Work

 889.
3-Home

 890.

 891. And here's a quick video overview from Sethi:
 892.

 893.
This promised to be a very powerful feature enabling teachers to give quizzes and trust that students were not accessing any external resources.
919.
920. In a class of 10 or 15 students it is possible to administer quizzes on devices by monitoring the screens...but this is far from optimal! There are also some software solutions that help with this but they are often expensive and require IT admin to initiate the testing.
921.
922. Beginning January 2019, Google began rolling out access to its beta version of 'Locked Mode for Google Forms'. Any school that has managed Chromebooks will soon be able to deliver quizzes to students in a secure environment.
923.
924. Our school received access to the feature a few weeks ago, and so far it has worked exactly how it was designed.
925.

 926. Getting Setup - Initiating Locked Mode

 927. Assuming you have your quiz setup already, applying locked mode is as easy as turning a Form into a Quiz. The new mode works with any of your old Forms, or you can go ahead and create a new quiz. And remember, you can use the new Quiz assignment from within Google Classroom to create your classes too!
928.
929. From the Settings menu, click on Quizzes, hit 'Make this a quiz' and the Locked Mode option will become available.
930.
931.

 932.

 933.

 934.

 935.

 936. Important: as soon as locked mode is enabled, only students with managed Chromebooks running Chrome OS68 or newer will be able to access the quiz

 937.

 938.

 939.

 940. Once locked mode is available, the settings for collect email address, restrict to one submission and restrict to your domain or automatically selected.

 941.

 942. Not everything is blocked...

 943.

 944. Google have thought this through and not everything is blocked. Accessibility tools are still available via keyboard shortcut:

 945.

 946.

 947.
ChromeVox (text-to-speech extension)

 948.
High contrast mode

 949.
Fullscreen magnifier

 950.
Docked magnifier

 951.

 952.

 953.

 954. What if we don't have Chromebooks?

 955.

 956. Unfortunately in this case you wont be able to use Locked Mode, anyone accessing the quiz without a managed Chromebook running OS68 or later will not be able to proceed past the initial screen:
957.

 958.

 960.

 961. What did we think?

 962.

 963. We received access to this feature and announced it to teachers the same day without much more than a short tutorial by email. Within a couple of hours I had received emails from happy teachers who had successfully launched locked mode on quizzes that day on our managed Acer Spin 11 Chromebooks. Success! Students were locked to the quiz, and if any did leave the quiz halfway before submitting, the teacher receives a warning:
964.

 965.

 966.

 967.

 968.

 969.

 970. During a Locked mode quiz, the Form is shown in full screen view and students are unable to open another tab, switch tabs, copy and paste text or access Chrome extensions.

 971.

 972.

 973.

 974. It is important to note that students are restricted to one response each - this may not suit every style of assessment.

 975.

 976.

 977.

 978. One quick troubleshooting note, if you are trying this on managed Chromebooks and students cannot access the quiz, just make sure the Chromebook has been updated to the latest OS version (68 or higher).

 979.

 980. And the big question...can students hack locked mode?

 981.

 982. As much as I trust that Google engineers have tested every possible iteration to try to 'break' the quiz mode....Google have nothing on a class of grade 8 students! So far it has been a success, but probably a little too early to tell if any students have found a workaround....stay tuned for updates!

 983.

 984. How do I get access for myself and my teachers?

 985.

 986. Listed below are the key links you need that explain how to get setup and request access to the ongoing Beta testing:

1002. Do you teach at a school using G Suite for Education? Or are you a teacher interested in bringing the tools to your school? 1003.
1004. There will be over 20 different sessions running throughout the day, with plenty of choices for G Suite beginners and for advanced users. So whether you are just starting your G Suite journey, or an old hand at using the tools in a classroom, there will be something for everyone to take away. (Did we mention it’s free?)
1005.
1006. Alongside the sessions led by our Google experts (all of whom are educators themselves), there will also be an open surgery where you can ask your own questions, a keynote from a Googler and community sessions presented by teachers showing what works in their classrooms.
1007.
1008. Last time this event was held, requests for tickets far outweighed the space available so apply now. You will be notified by 5th February if you have been allocated a space.
