38.
The answer to this question is a resounding, “YES!!!”

 39.
And as of mid-November, we’ve returned to traditional appointments. (There are still a number of small items to complete, but the bulk of the renovation is done and we’re thrilled to welcome in to see what we’ve done!)

 40.
In fact, getting back to traditional appointments was the primary and only reason we’ve taken on this investment and ordeal. Dr. Jenn and I never once wanted to move to a curbside model during the Covid pandemic. That’s why we were seen consistently meeting with clients outside and maskless.

 41.
Communication is important. Communication along with the practice of good medicine is what built Cuyahoga Falls Veterinary Clinic going way back to 1981. And communication is so much more than a phone call. It’s facial expression and body language, too. It’s also the welcoming nature that’s expressed when we invite our clients to enter our space. We want that type of communication, and we’ve put our money where our mouth is.

 42.
The combination of state-imposed curbside service and the fact that we simply outgrew our building during the Covid pandemic pressed us to make a decision:

 43.

 44.
Stop taking on new clients, and in fact trim our present client roster

 45.
Open a satellite clinic elsewhere

 46.
Expand locally to meet the demand and provide services for those who need them

 47.

 48.
We settled on the third, and that necessitated some big, and longer-term inconveniences. The good news… we’re nearing the end of the inconveniences!
49.

 50.
To catch you up to speed…

 51.

 52.
we’ve added three exam rooms

 53.
we’ve converted our old employee break room (designed for 4-6 people) to a second surgery room

 54.
a new employee break room was added to accommodate the 11-15 we now have on a typical day

 55.
laundry capacity was doubled… HALLELUJAH!

 56.
we’ve whittled down our kennel space because we haven’t provided as much boarding in recent years, and this gave us space to increase our treatment room capacity by 50%

 57.
the doctors office was remodeled to provide sufficient space for 5 doctors (… one of these days…)

 109.
After several months considering all of our options, including expanding to a separate, suitable location, we have chosen to remodel and expand our present clinic. Construction ought to begin in the spring time, and we anticipate project completion by the end of the year.

 110.
We understand that transition is never easy, and we know that “unforeseen bumps in the road” are inevitable. However, Covid restrictions prepared us for “unforeseen bumps in the road,” and we expect this new change to be a very positive one for all of us. We look forward to making the transition as smooth as it can possibly be, and we are confident that our newly expanded 4,500 sq.ft. clinic will allow us to serve you better. We will do our very best to provide the same high level of compassionate medical care for your pets as we have in the past during this present time of building transition.

 111.
Construction updates will be posted on our social media platforms, both Instagram and Facebook, so you will be informed of our progress, and we look forward to serving you in our newly renovated building in the winter of 2022.

 125.

[Veterinarian’s Note: In an effort to keep our clients informed while accounting for the tune-in factor, this reads much like some previous posts, with some updates sprinkled in.]

 126.
There are hundreds of pet foods on the market, and everyone online and in the store aisles seems to have an opinion about what diet is best. We at the Cuyahoga Falls Veterinary Clinic recommend providing diets manufactured by companies which comply with ALL the recommendations set by WSAVA for animal feed companies. A summary of these criteria are:

 127.

 128.
Employing board certified veterinary nutritionists full time to formulate their diets, and making them available for consultations and questions.

 129.
Diet(s) are tested using AAFCO feeding trials, by nutrient analysis. Look for the following on the label under the ingredients and guaranteed analysis:

 130.

 131.

“Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that <this food> provides complete and balanced nutrition for <this specific life stage>.”

 132.

 133.
They have specific quality control measures in place to assure the consistency and quality of their product line.

 134.
They have full control over the plants and factories where their foods are produced and manufactured, and allow visitors.

 135.
They provide a complete product nutrient analysis for the dog and cat food of interest, including digestibility values.

 136.
They provide the caloric value per gram, can, and/or cup of their foods.

 137.
They conduct research on their products, and the results are published in peer-reviewed journals

 138.

 139.
Royal Canin, Purina, Iams/Eukanuba and Hills are the only pet food companies that comply with all of these recommendations as of this publication.

 140.
We wish this list were longer, and we’ll be happy to add to the list when additional manufacturers decide the above criteria are worth their time and investment.

 141.
If you’re looking for more than the summary above, you can find the full recommendations here.

 142.
Some important history on this topic:

 143.
On Thursday, June 27, the FDA released the initial findings from their ongoing investigation. We’d heard this would be enlightening, and it didn’t disappoint. Due to the link between boutique, exotic ingredient and grain-free diets (BEG, BEGFD) and an increased risk for heart disease.

 144.
There is much research left to be done, but at this point we encourage our clients to be wary of any foods that list in their top 5 ingredients – pea, sweet potato, lentil, potato and chick pea as these ingredients are also under investigation as having a potential link to an increased risk for dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and/or taurine deficiency (a deficiency which cannot necessarily be satisfied by supplementing the food). The Cardiology Service at the University of California Davis has recommended that if you are going to feed a diet containing any pea, potato, legume, and pulse ingredients, they should be listed after the meat and grains on the ingredient list and that there are no more than two in total.

 160.

It’s a poorly kept secret delivering veterinary medical services has become more of a challenge since the pandemic started. Nobody anticipated the world events would lead to a dramatic nationwide increase in animal adoption and pet ownership, but that’s exactly what we’ve observed and experienced.

 161.
Surveys show this increase in pet ownership has been over a million nationally, and similar surveys show a corresponding increase in veterinary visits. The truth is, we’ve had a hard time keeping up with this increased demand.

 162.

 163.
First, we added phone lines to avoid missing calls from frustrated clients getting busy signals.

 164.
Then we added to our team to have enough hands and minds to handle the increased workload. This is proving to be a constant work in progress, and you’ll continue to see new faces.

 165.
Then we expanded our parking lot to contain our increase in employees while also accommodating the additional clients and patients we were seeing every hour.

 166.
Most recently we made the decision to remain in primarily curbside mode, with traditional appointments on Wednesday and Saturdays*. This was distinctly not about fears of Covid, but rather to maintain efficiency. We are able to see more patients without compromising our medical standards when we don’t have to move our clients through the building.

 167.
All of this is a work in progress, and while we may not be moving as quickly through appointments as you may have been used to, or as fast as you’d like, our vision is to provide as much quality care as we possibly can.

 168.

 169.
We know the frustration of not being able to get an appointment with our own human doctors for weeks to months out, and we were hearing the frustration from our clients when they learned they’d necessarily have to wait a few weeks to get in.

 170.
Drs. Jenn and Ryan value communication, and we’ve heard you.

 171.
BIG THINGS are in the works at Cuyahoga Falls Veterinary Clinic.

 172.
To provide the very best and and most timely care we possibly can, we’ve added a veterinarian to our team, and it’s impossible to communicate in written words just how excited we are to introduce Dr. Tracie Springer to you. Her teaming with Dr. Ryan, Dr. Jenn and Dr. Shelby will allow all of us to provide greater availability and maintain our long-standing standard in the midst of unprecedented demand.

 173.
Dr. Springer’s joining our team, and all of the circumstances that led to this necessity, also brings some rather big changes. First, good doctors rely on good support staff. Our present team is presently stretched very thin, and we’re in the process of adding to our team. We have high standards for our technicians and assistants, and we’re working hard to identify those who will help us provide the good care we expect of ourselves.

 174.
Equally important, we’ve officially acknowledged the fact we’ve outgrown our building. The wonderfully efficient, always immaculately clean building Dr. Doug Gates built in 1999 is becoming too small for three and four doctors to sufficiently keep up with all of the demand we’re experiencing. Our creativity with what is becoming limited space is getting more challenging. Expansion is in the works, and this will bring with it a whole new set of challenges.

 175.
We have a long-term vision for Cuyahoga Falls Veterinary Clinic. This vision includes returning to traditional style appointments, shorter wait times for appointments for both existing and new clients, a larger surgery suite to accommodate two surgeons, greater space for the amazing laboratory technology we’ve added (and will continue to add), sufficient desk space in the doctor’s office… and the list goes on.

 176.
Our vision necessarily calls for patience and flexibility from our doctors, our support team, and also from you, our clients.

 177.
We will necessarily remain in curbside mode for the duration of the transition, and depending upon the particular day or stage in construction, we may have some disruptions in availability. We intend, though, to keep the care our patients experience as uninterrupted and normal as possible.

 178.
Through what will be somewhat of a long process, we will work with the same goal we always have, to provide compassionate and comprehensive care for our patients. We’re excited about what is to come, and we are looking forward to sharing this excitement with you.

 194.
For a variety of reasons, the demand for veterinary services has increased dramatically since March, 2020. This increased demand is a national as well as a local phenomena, and it has not slowed down. At times, the demand has outpaced our ability to adequately supply it.

 195.
In order to meet the demand of our regular clients, for whom we are very grateful, we must maintain the most efficient model, and that has proven to be curbside. This allows us to avoid 2-4+ week wait times for appointments, such as we’ve had to impose upon new clients, for whom we are also very thankful.

 196.
For those who feel a particular need to accompany their animal into the exam room, we will make appointments available on Wednesdays and Saturdays for traditional visits. At the same time, we’ve learned nearly all of our patients are better behaved when separated from their owners. The degree to which our patients respond to and take cues from their owners’ anxiety is significant. Accordingly, some of our patients will always be seen on a curbside model at the doctors’ discretion. End-of-life visits will return to a traditional model for those who desire it.

 197.
Drs. Ryan and Jenn will continue to evaluate the way veterinary medicine is practiced and delivered at Cuyahoga Falls Veterinary Clinic. The goal has always been to deliver compassionate & comprehensive veterinary care. That looks different today than it did prior to the pandemic, but the product delivered to the patient remains the same, as it ought to be.

 214.

Covid and all of the changes to our personal lives and to our society that have come with it have been overwhelming. One cannot open a newspaper, turn on the radio or walk into a store without a blunt reminder that life in America has changed.

 215.
Life at Cuyahoga Falls Veterinary Clinic has changed as well, and we doctors want to share with you some details about these changes and what they mean for you, our present and future clients. Also, we want to share two very important messages for all pet owners, whether in northeast Ohio or elsewhere, which we’ll include at the bottom of this post.

 216.
The obvious change is the logistics of curbside care, less face-to-face time with our doctors at your visit, and longer wait times. Our building cannot facilitate the degree of social distancing our governor and the health department requires. As a result, we must play the hand we’re dealt and continue with our current plan. This isn’t ideal, in our opinion, but it is necessary at this time from a public health standpoint. To accommodate some of these changes, we’ve added a phone line and added to our team in an effort to keep things moving as efficiently as we are able.

 217.
The less obvious change, and the aspect that we want to address with this post, is that since mid-April, we have been so busy, our schedule fills so full and so quickly, that we have at times been unable to provide the sort of on-demand care our clients have come to expect from us.

 218.
Historically, one could call us with a concern, and our schedule was structured such that we could make arrangements for a visit within 24 hours, if not within 6 hours. In seasons past, we’ve been able to accommodate new clients by making an appointment within a day or two. This wasn’t made possible because we had nothing to do, but because we intentionally built our schedule around being convenient for our clientele.

 219.
When Covid emerged in mid-March and our governor placed restrictions on veterinary clinics, availability at all clinics in the state was reduced. As March led to April and April to May, some clinics in the area maintained themselves at reduced availability. Further, because schools sent the kids home, Drs. Ryan and Jenn were forced to adjust their availability, reducing appointment times and surgery blocks to facilitate their children’s education.

 220.
Consequently, we have been inundated with new client and patient requests in addition to keeping up with our long-term, loyal clients who became backlogged. We are aware a large segment of our new client requests come from individuals with genuine need. While we loathe turning even one patient away, time is a limited resource. We are doing everything possible to meet the most needs for the most number of patients day in and day out. As an example of how we are prioritizing our regular clients, we now require prepayment from new clients to schedule in an effort to discourage the rate of new client no-shows all clinics have experienced for some time. We have seen this reduce the amount of wasted appointment spaces, freeing up the time for our regular clients in need.

 221.
Two important messages:

 222.

 223.
First, to our regular clients, we appreciate your loyalty to us over the years. We are grateful for your trust and for your business. During this time of limited capacity, our priority is being as available to you as we can be.

 224.
Second, to the reader who does not have a relationship with a full service veterinarian, there could be a variety of reasons for your choosing such a plan. There is no way to adjust the past. We recommend you schedule an appointment with a veterinarian today at their earliest availability, whenever that may be. This will establish a relationship between you and your veterinarian, as well as between your animal and your veterinarian. Establish this veterinary-client-patient relationship (VCPR) with a veterinarian in your community today so that one day in the future, in your time of need, you’ll have a clinic that knows you, knows your animal, and can respond to your need with a timely, loyal response.

 225.

 226.
In conclusion, we ask that you continue to be patient with the process here during your visits. Our team is working hard to facilitate the smoothest visit possible for you and your pet. Please understand that our schedule may not be as flexible for you as it has been in the past. We are navigating this Covid situation to the best of our ability while also refusing to compromise in our mission of providing kind, compassionate and comprehensive care for you and your pet.

 279.

 280.

 281.
Employing board certified veterinary nutritionists full time to formulate their diets, and making them available for consultations and questions.

 282.
Diet(s) are tested using AAFCO feeding trials, by nutrient analysis. Look for the following on the label under the ingredients and guaranteed analysis:

 283.

 284.

“Animal feeding tests using AAFCO procedures substantiate that <this food> provides complete and balanced nutrition for <this specific life stage>.”

 285.

 286.
They have specific quality control measures in place to assure the consistency and quality of their product line.

 287.
They have full control over the plants and factories where their foods are produced and manufactured, and allow visitors.

 288.
They provide a complete product nutrient analysis for the dog and cat food of interest, including digestibility values.

 289.
They provide the caloric value per gram, can, and/or cup of their foods.

 290.
They conduct research on their products, and the results are published in peer-reviewed journals

 291.

 292.
Royal Canin, Purina, Iams/Eukanuba and Hills are the only pet food companies that comply with all of these recommendations as of this publication. Please check the label to be certain.

 293.
You can find the full recommendations here.

 294.
On Thursday, June 27, the FDA released the initial findings from their ongoing investigation. We’d heard this would be enlightening, and it didn’t disappoint. Due to the link between boutique, exotic ingredient and grain-free diets (BEG, BEGFD) and an increased risk for heart disease, we do not recommend a grain-free diet for any pet that hasn’t been specifically diagnosed with a medical need for this diet by a board certified veterinary nutritionist, gastroenterologist, dermatologist, or other veterinary specialist.

 295.

 296.
Information about this form of heart disease as it relates to nutrition can be found from a group of veterinarians and from the FDA.

 298.
Be aware that all the foods currently under investigation have been “formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog (or cat) Food Nutrient Profiles.” Some of the foods currently under investigation may conduct AAFCO feeding trials, but as of this posting none meet all the WSAVA recommendations. We routinely recommend feeding your pet a diet that was specifically formulated for their life stage (puppy, kitten, senior…) and we do not recommend food that has been formulated “for all life stages.”

 299.
If you have any questions about your dog’s diet, particularly as it relates to the grain-free movement, or if you are wondering if your dog may have an emerging heart condition, please schedule a time to meet with one of our doctors.
