62.
63.
Each classroom takeover includes an hour-long visit from Jones, Villarreal, or Raska where they walk students through the steps of a simple recipe they can try at home, including bok choy noodle crisp salad, pizza-flavored popcorn, and chocolate brownies made from beets.

64.
65.
66.
67.
“Meeting the kids where they’re at is both fun for us and easier for the schools, for the teachers, because they don’t have to do anything,” said Raska, who walked second graders through a recipe for pizza popcorn using only cooked popcorn, parmesan cheese, oregano, and sundried tomato oil. “We come in and take over, and it’s such an enriching opportunity for the kids. It gives them a break from the day-to-day rigor of the classroom, and they get to have a little fun and a little bit of passive learning in the process.”

68.
69.
70.
71.
Raska’s lesson included introducing students to each component of the snack they would be making while practicing food etiquette and experiencing their food using all five senses. Students were asked to smell the popcorn, feel the texture of the added spices, and listen to its crunch as they chewed. Some of the more adventurous snackers even volunteered to kick up the heat and sampled some crushed red pepper flakes on their pizza popcorn snack.

72.
73.
74.
75.
Following the cooking demonstration, Raska led students in a game of bingo, and students won by sorting different foods into the correct food groups.

76.
77.
78.
79.
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Raska. “The overall goal is to help our kids learn a little bit more about food, build an appreciation, and really foster a positive relationship with their food.”

168.
169.
Students were welcomed by visiting military service people and a demonstration by the Sam Houston High School Color Guard, then witnessed the presentation of scholarship checks to two students from Bellaire High School, Antonio Hernandez and Catherine Medina.

170.
171.
172.
173.
“The scholarship means a lot to me. It means being able to become a soldier in the U.S. Army, which I believe is one of the strongest in the world, and also to become an officer,” said Hernandez. “That will allow me to lead people and have a direct impact on their lives and futures.”

174.
175.
176.
177.
Hernandez applied to college with help from advisors from Houston SORD – the ROTC scholarship program whose recipients, including Hernandez, receive full-ride college scholarships for exhibiting exceptional leadership potential and other sought-after qualities.

178.
179.
180.
181.
Different branches of the military as well as several colleges and universities were represented at the career day, and students had the better part of two hours to peruse their options as well as participate in fun games and win prizes. Students had the opportunity to try out Army flight and parachuting VR simulators, sit in a real U.S. Coast Guard boat, and even see a real military helicopter land in the Delmar parking lot.

182.
183.
184.
185.
“This event is geared toward seniors. It’s March, you haven’t made a decision, are you going to college, you’re not quite ready yet, so here are the opportunities for you,” said Sevy Meloni, Director of Post-Secondary Programming with HISD. “You can enlist, you can apply for college, go to the Army, all of these career options, not necessarily just enlisting.”

186.
187.

304.
305.
306.
“This is awesome. This is big for me and is just a way for me to give back some of the information I learned throughout my journey,” said Ward. “Being able to give that to some kids is big time for me.”

416.
Tackle Reading is a national literacy event founded by author Kathryn Starke, a former elementary school teacher and literacy consultant. Tackle Reading combines the National Football League, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, Random House Children’s Books and others to encourage literacy and get children excited about reading. NFL teams and alumni donate their time to visit schools and read to students, and publishing partners donate books that students can keep and add to their home libraries.

417.
418.
419.
420.
“The focus of today is to celebrate reading and to encourage students to read, to help raise literacy rates and to encourage them to sharpen all of the skills that will help them with testing and other things in their life,” said Valencia Webber, Senior Community Development Manager for the Houston Texans. “HISD has been an amazing partner for us, allowing us to visit different campuses and telling us the needs of the students and the different communities that we serve. We’re really excited about all the upcoming events and initiatives that we’re going to put forward with HISD.”

421.
422.
423.
424.
Tackle Reading coincides with Houston Reads Day, a day where community members (including HISD Superintendent Mike Miles) volunteer to read to Pre-K and kindergarten students throughout the city.

425.
426.
427.
428.
“We’re ecstatic to have [the Houston Texans] as a continued partner as we work to maximize resources to support student achievement across all areas,” said Cherranda Smith, Coordinator with HISD Community Partnerships. “For the Tackle Reading event, we have a legend, a former player, reading to our students, getting them engaged in books. Through this partnership, we’re hoping to help students build their home libraries which we know goes to support long-lasting achievement in literacy among our kids.”

429.
430.
431.
432.
Mitchell entertained pre-K and Kindergarten students at Law reading Green Eggs and Ham, which quickly turned into a game of call and response, students chanting “Eat it! Eat it!” at the laughing pro athlete as Sam-I-Am finally convinced the narrator to try his questionably colored food.

433.
434.
435.
436.
After the story, the Law students were gifted a Dr. Seuss book of their own, Fox in Socks to grow their own book collections at home. 480.
“The training was very impactful for our teachers, and we know that impact will carry over to our students,” said HISD Health and Physical Education Curriculum Coordinator Felicia Ceaser-White. “Our teachers now have additional soccer expertise. The lessons in the curriculum will help us engage our students in a way that they will not only grow their soccer skills, but other skills as well. And the donation of the 1,200 soccer balls will equip our schools and help us implement the curriculum.”

481.
482.
483.
484.
In addition to Houston ISD, other school districts utilizing the Soccer for Success curriculum include NYC Public Schools, the School District of Philadelphia, Yakima School District (WA), Richland 1 School District (SC) and Cleveland Metropolitan School District, and others.

485.
486.
487.
488.
“We want the kids in Houston to understand what the World Cup is and why soccer is such a beautiful and important game not only to us, but around the world,” said Lisa Perry, Director of Soccer for Success at the U.S. Soccer Foundation. “And what we want the students to get out of it is a better ability to be able to play soccer not just on a team, but play in their neighborhoods, play on a local mini pitch, or maybe just in their own backyards or around with friends. They don’t have to play competitive soccer. They can just play it and have fun.”

523.
Since October, Neff Elementary fifth graders have been engaged in a massive undertaking in their creative arts classes, one at which many fully grown adults might balk. Students—112 of them—are working together to produce, stage and star in a production of Aladdin Jr. The four months of hard, collaborative work are about to pay off as the show opens tonight for a limited two-night run.

524.
525.
526.
527.
528.
529.
530.
531.
Neff drama teacher Annais Alvarez is directing the show. Along with teacher specialist Monica Diaz, dance teacher Sydney Reichardt, music teacher Dot Brown and librarian Daisy Hernandez, Alvarez double cast the musical play to give every student an opportunity to shine. Between shows, actors swap with dancers and members of the crew. The And students don’t just perform on stage—they created the sets and will operate the lighting and technical aspects of the show, as well.

532.
533.
534.
535.
Thursday’s performance stars fifth grader Gulalai Jabar as Princess Jasmine. Jabar is an English as a Second Language (ESL) student who came to Neff in the third grade. As a Newcomer student from Afghanistan with a limited English vocabulary, Jabar was afraid to try acting. Still she participated in the fourth-grade program last year—and through her experience as a stage manager, gradually built up the confidence to audition for and then perform in Aladdin Jr.

536.
537.
538.
539.
“I was very scared to act this year,” Jabar said. “I really wanted to challenge myself, and [now] I love acting.”

540.
541.
542.
543.
Jabar explained that memorizing her lines to play Princess Jasmine has helped improve her English, and that public speaking has helped her to make friends and connect with other children.

544.
545.
546.
547.
Students who are a part of the play spend time working on the production each school day. They can also choose to stay after school with Alvarez to practice lines, perfect the sets and prepare for opening night.

548.
549.
550.
551.
“I feel like kids need to feel comfortable first,” Alvarez said. “The teamwork, the helping each other, that’s the beauty of theater. They’ll be helping someone else nonverbally, then they start to speak a little bit more and more and build up their confidence.”

552.
553.
554.
555.
Alvarez utilizes puppetry and pantomime in her classroom to make theater accessible to all students, whether they share a language or not.

556.
557.
558.
559.
“They don’t have to speak,” Diaz said. “Everybody can just get what they’re saying like it’s a whole different language that we’re all speaking. It has a lot to do with the instructor in the room, because she gives them a safe place to act silly and she’s going to act silly with them. They’re going to see that, and she gives them that safe space to come out of their shell.”

560.
561.
562.
563.
Aladdin Jr. opens with its first performance on Thursday, February 29, at 5 p.m. at Neff Elementary School. The second performance is Friday, March 1, at 6 p.m. The performances are free, but seating is limited.

More than 450 candidates attended the event to learn about working in the District’s New Education System (NES) and non-NES schools.

650.
651.
652.
653.
The Campus Hiring Kickoff featured presentations from District leaders, including Superintendent Mike Miles; a panel discussion and Q&A session; live NES instructional demonstrations; and on-the-spot interviews for current openings and future positions.

654.
655.
656.
657.
“HISD is building an elite team to serve our students—so if you’re an effective teacher or one who is ready to grow as an educator, we want you to join us,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Jessica Neyman. “In turn, we pledge to support you. At HISD, we provide higher-than-average compensation for teachers at our schools across the board—and in our NES schools, we offer some of the highest teacher compensation packages in the U.S. This makes a significant difference in a teacher’s paycheck today and in their retirement payout in the future.”

658.
659.
660.
661.
In HISD, first-year teachers at non-NES schools will earn a regionally competitive $64,000 for the 2024-2025 school year.

662.
663.
664.
665.
NES schools pay teachers and staff even higher salaries and differentiate compensation based on the subject and grade level taught as well as rigorous teacher and leader evaluation systems. Average salaries for high school NES teachers, for example, start at $82,816, and go up to $88,816 for a teacher with five or more years of experience.

666.
667.
668.
669.
Campuses in the NES receive extra resources and are built around a staffing structure that supports better work-life harmony and allows teachers to focus on their core work. In addition, schools use a specific instructional model to help ensure all students get the targeted support they need.

670.
671.
672.
673.
On Saturday, teachers interested in working at an NES campus were able to see live instructional demonstrations from NES teacher-leaders who taught lessons in English language arts, math, and Art of Thinking—a class focused on teaching critical-thinking and problem-solving skills and how to assess, evaluate, and effectively use information.

674.
675.
676.
677.
During the latter portion of the event, principals and other campus leaders interviewed candidates for current and future openings, and extended several job offers. HISD’s Talent Acquisition team plans to host more job fairs in the coming months.

678.
679.
680.
681.
“If you want to work in a district that is transforming the education system and that will value and also raise expectations for you and kids, this is the place to be,” said Superintendent Miles.

737.
In the week preceding Scholastic Journalism Week, a week dedicated to supporting and celebrating excellence in student journalism, the Burbank student media team participated in a field trip to Lamar High School to cover the HISD PTO Expo. There, they interviewed and engaged with attendees including Superintendent Mike Miles. In addition to utilizing the technology behind video production, Burbank students, several of whom identified themselves as shy or soft-spoken before enrolling in Luviano’s class, have the opportunity to practice interpersonal communication and public speaking, invaluable skills that Luviano hopes will set them apart in high school and in their post-secondary endeavors.

741.
“They are the reason that I am a teacher, that’s why I’m here, to teach them skills that they can use in their futures,” said Luviano. “Having fun in the process is not a bad thing. It’s the motivation for them to keep going, to explore on their own. They make mistakes, and they learn from them, and they have fun in the process. That’s why we have the bloopers section of the Burbank Show.”
