76.
Although classified as "unofficial," the 49ers had no surprises in their initial depth for Monday night's season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

 77.
Blaine Gabbert is the No. 1 quarterback, followed by Colin Kaepernick and Christian Ponder, which is the order coach Chip Kelly announced on Saturday.

 78.
Neither of the 49ers' first-round draft picks this year are in the starting units. Instead, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (No. 7 overall) and left guard Joshua Garnett (No. 28) are listed as second string.

 79.
Buckner could elevate to the top unit, however, if projected starter Quinton Dial can't play because of a sprained knee. Garnett is the backup to Zane Beadles, the 49ers' only free-agent pickup who's on the 53-man roster.

 80.
The starting offensive line also consists of left tackle Joe Staley, center Daniel Kilgore, right guard Anthony Davis and right tackle Trent Brown.

 81.
The starting offensive unit includes three wide receivers, with newly acquired Jeremy Kerley joining Torrey Smith and Quinton Patton. Kerley is also listed as their only punt-returner option, seeing how Jarryd Hayne retired in May and neither DeAndrew White, Kenneth Acker nor Bryce Treggs remain on the roster.

 82.
One starting job appears unresolved, at least publicly, as both Ray-Ray Armstrong and Gerald Hodges are listed as possible starters next to NaVorro Bowman at inside linebacker.

 83.
The 49ers also announced the jersey numbers for four newcomers: Ponder (No. 15), Kerley (No. 17), defensive back Marcus Cromartie (No. 20), offensive lineman John Theus (No. 71), wide receiver Rod Streater (No. 81) and defensive tackle Taylor Hart (No. 96). Streater's number belonged the last three seasons to Anquan Boldin, although Ryan Whalen wore it in the exhibition season.

 118.
Down went Colin Kaepernick. Down went Blaine Gabbert.

 119.
No matter which "mobile" quarterback was in for the 49ers, pass rushers easily took down their prey, piling up 53 sacks last season and 52 in 2014.

 120.
A revamped offensive line should fortify things this season, beginning Monday night when Gabbert starts ahead of Kaepernick against the Los Angeles Rams at Levi’s Stadium.

 121.
It won’t be a dry run. Right away, the 49ers encounter defensive tackle Aaron Donald, last season’s runner-up for the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award, behind the Houston Texans’ J.J. Watt.

 122.
“You’ve got to be on your toes with Aaron Donald,” center Daniel Kilgore said recently. “He’s an elite defensive tackle. If he’s not No. 1, he’s Nos. 2 or 3. He’s very explosive.”

 123.
“It’s going to be a dogfight,” Donald told the Rams’ website. “A divisional game — a team that we know, they know us.”

 124.
Actually, Kilgore will have new guards flanking him. The projected starters are left guard Zane Beadles, the 49ers’ lone prize from free agency, and right guard Anthony Davis, who spent last season on the retired list after starting strictly at right tackle in his 71 previous games.

 125.
Joshua Garnett, a first-round draft pick out of Stanford, could sneak into the lineup, too, although his only exhibition start came in the finale at left guard. Andrew Tiller was the first-string right guard until Davis switched there about two weeks ago, with second-year behemoth Trent Brown (6-foot-8, 355 pounds) entrenched at right tackle.

 126.
Neither Gabbert nor Kaepernick got sacked in the exhibition season; Gabbert took 43 snaps in the first three games, and Kaepernick had 49, including 36 last Thursday in San Diego.

 127.
Last season, it was ugly. Kaepernick got sacked 28 times through eight games, then it was Gabbert’s turn to absorb 25 sacks, including nine sacks (tying a 49ers record) in a Dec. 13 loss at Cleveland.

 128.
“Everybody knows that last year is not anywhere near the standard and expectation here,” left tackle Joe Staley said upon reporting to his 10th training camp. “Everybody is excited to get back to work. That’s the only way to remedy the kind of season we had last year.”

 129.
The Rams only sacked Gabbert once in the regular-season finale, a 19-16 overtime win by the host 49ers. Kilgore carries confidence from that matchup into Monday night’s rematch, saying the 49ers have done “OK” against Donald, a third-year star who has 20 career sacks but only one against the 49ers.

 130.
“Guys get caught up to much with his speed and strength,” Kilgore said. “You just have to go in knowing he’s an enforcer, but they have 10 others (on defense) that are good, too.”

 131.
The Rams defense does tout other solid linemen in Robert Quinn, William Hayes and Michael Brockers. But gone are defensive end Chris Long, defensive tackle Nick Fairly, cornerback Janoris Jenkins and linebackers James Laurinaitis and Akeem Ayers.

 132.
-- The 49ers had meetings but no formal practice Tuesday. Players and coordinators – but not coach Chip Kelly -- will be available to the media Wednesday for the first time since tight end Bruce Miller’s early Monday arrest for assault and subsequent release from the team.

 133.
-- Among the player odds listed for each team by online sportsbook Bovada are these over/under figures for the 49ers: Blaine Gabbert 9.5 starts, Colin Kaepernick 2.5 starts, Carlos Hyde 950 rushing yards and Torrey Smith 850 receiving yards and 4.5 touchdown catches.

 134.
-- The Rams began practicing this week at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, where they’ll train the next three regular seasons. After moving from St. Louis, they held offseason practices in Oxnard and then moved to UC Irvine for training camp.

 135.
“It really wasn’t hard,” Donald said of the moves. “I guess getting yourself situated here and finding a house and moving your family and all (is challenging), but everything has been good.”

 136.

 165.
Tank Carradine's "excellent progress" in transitioning to outside linebacker has earned him a one-year contract extension, 49ers general manager Trent Baalke announced Tuesday in a statement.

 166.

 167.
Carradine slodged through the past two seasons as a backup defensive tackle. After dropping 30 pounds and moving to outside linebacker, he will be counted on to pick up the pass-rush slack as Aaron Lynch serves a four-game suspension.

 168.
Carradine received a $1.25 million signing bonus, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

 169.
"Tank is a hard-working, dedicated player who is making excellent progress in his transition from DE to OLB," Baalke said. "We look forward to his continued development and contributions to our organization."

 170.
Carradine was the first of seven players Baalke has drafted that were coming off anterior cruciate ligament tears. Only Carradine (2013, second round) and Keith Reaser (2014, fifth round) remain on the roster.

 171.
Carradine and Eli Harold likely will rotate in place of Lynch while Ahmad Brooks mans the other outside linebacker role under new defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil.

 172.
Carradine has four career sacks in 23 games (one start) since 2014. He missed his rookie year recovering from his knee injury at Florida State.

 199.
Colin Kaepernick has reached out to the one NFL player outside his own team that joined in his protest against racial oppression by refusing to stand for the national anthem.

 200.
Seattle Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane told reporters Monday he would continue to sit for the anthem, saying, "I'm just going to continue doing what I'm doing."

 201.
Lane, as he was following the Seahawks game against Raiders Thursday night, wasn't big on elaboration, but said Kaepernick had reached out "and just told me thank you for standing behind him."

 202.
Kaepernick did not stand for the national anthem in the 49ers first three preseason games, although it wasn't noticed until he was in uniform for the third game against San Diego. He and teammate Eric Reid kneeled for the anthem in San Diego, and Lane, while playing the Raiders in Oakland, was the only player known to have joined in the protest.

 203.
Asked about his actions Monday, Lane said he was "just piggybacking off what (Kaepernick) said, standing behind him."

 204.
Lane said he hasn't recruited any of his teammates to join in.

 205.
"I don't want to put no pressure on no one," Lane said. "I'm doing it for me"

 206.
The fifth-year cornerback said the only advice he got from coach Pete Carroll is to "be smart."

 207.
The Seahawks host the Miami Dolphins Sunday in their opener and Lane isn't sure what kind of reception he'll get from the home fans.

 208.
U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe knelt during the national anthem Sunday night before the Seattle Reign faced the Chicago Red Stars in what she called "a little nod" to Kaepernick and his stance before a National Women's League soccer game.

 209.
"I think it's actually pretty disgusting the way he was treated and the way a lot of media has covered it and made it about something it actually isn't," Rapinoe said. "We need to have a thoughtful, more two-sided conversation about racial relations in this country."

 210.
Rapinoe added: ``Being a gay American, I know what it's like to look at the flag and not have it protect all your liberties."

 234.
CORRECTION: A photo of Colin Kaepernick was originally placed on this post and shared on Twitter. It has been replaced by a photo of Bruce Miller.

 235.
The 49ers released tight end Bruce Miller Monday hours after he was arrested on charges stemming from an incident at a Fisherman's Wharf Hotel.

 236.
Miller allegedly punched a 70-year-old man and his son, according to a statement issued by the San Francisco Police Department, both of whom were transported to a local hospital for injuries.

 237.
The five-year veteran was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, elder abuse, threats and battery and booked into the San Francisco County Jail, where police said he was cooperative in the investigation.

 238.
The 49ers initially responded with a statement that said: ``The 49ers organization is aware of the media report regarding Bruce Miller. We are gathering relevant facts of this matter and will continue to monitor the situation.''

 239.
An hour later, the 49ers issued a press release which announced "The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have released Bruce Miller."

 240.
According to the police statement, police responded to call of a report of an intoxicated person, later identified as Miller.

 241.
Miller was allegedly attempting to enter a hotel room that was not his which was occupied by a 70-year-old man and his 66-year-old wife. The son, who was a neighboring guest, informed Miller he was in the wrong room when Miller ``charged at him, starting a physical altercation."

 242.
The father was injured when he came to the son's defense according to the statement.

 243.
Police located Miller across the street a different hotel after he had fled the scene.

 244.
The story was initially reported by KTVU.

 245.
In 2015, Miller pleaded no-contest to a misdemeanor disturbing the peace after an argument with his girlfriend. He attended a 16-week domestic counseling course.

 246.
Miller, 29, played in 77 games for the 49ers with 47 starts at fullback after being a seventh-round draft pick out of Central Florida, where he played defensive end.

 247.
Switching to tight end because coach Chip Kelly's offense does not include a fullback, Miller had made the 53-man roster.

 248.
The 49ers could promote Je'Ron Hamm, who was signed to the practice squad Sunday, although there are already three tight ends on roster with Miller's release: Vance McDonald Garrett Celek and Blake Bell.

 269.
Colin Kaepernick has the leader of the free world on his side.

 270.
Speaking at a news conference in Hangzhou, China Monday, President Barack Obama defended Kaepernick's decision not to stand for the national anthem.

 271.
"He's following his constitutional right to make a statement," Obama said. "I think there's a long history of sports figures doing so."

 272.
While Obama conceded he hadn't been following sports much recently, he had little doubt Kaepernick meant what he said regarding his views on racial oppression in America.

 273.
"I don't doubt his sincerity. I think he cares about some real, legitimate issues that have to be talked about," Obama said. "And if nothing else, he's generated some conversation around some topics that need to be talked about."

 274.
Calling for an "active citizenry," Obama praised Kaepernick for speaking out.

 275.
"I think there's a lot of ways you can do it," Obama said. "As a general matter when it comes to the flag and the national anthem and the meaning that it holds for our men and women in uniform and those who fought for us, that is a tough thing for them to get past, to then hear what his deeper concerns are.

 276.
"Maybe some of his critics will start seeing he has a point around certain concerns around justice and equality."

 277.
Obama's views on Kaepernick are in sharp contrast to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who said on a Seattle radio station that ``maybe he should find a new country that works for him. It won't happen."

 278.
Vice presidential candidate Gov. Mike Pence (Indiana-R), disagreed with Kaepernick in an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" but didn't share his running mate's feelings about the quarterback finding another country."My late father was a combat veteran," Pence said. "My dad used to say, 'I may disagree with everything you say, but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it.' Mr. Kaepernick has every right to be wrong _ but he's completely in the wrong."

 279.
As yet, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has not weighed in on Kaepernick's stance.

 280.
Kaepernick told reporters on Aug. 28 that while the country had elected a black president "a lot of things haven't changed. There are a lot of issues that haven't been addressed. And that's something over an eight-year term. There's a lot of those things that are hard to change and there's a lot of those things he doesn't necessarily have complete control over."

 281.
Regarding Trump and Clinton, Kaepernick said both ``currently represent the issue that we have in the country right now . . . you have Hillary who has called black teens or black kids super predators. You have Donald Trump who's openly racist. I mean, we have a candidate (in Clinton) who's deleted emails and done things illegally as a presidential candidate. That doesn't make sense to me, because if that was any other person, you'd be in prison."

 282.
-- Sales of Kaepernick's jersey have jumped to No. 3 in the NFL since his protest, according to NFL.com, trailing only Dallas rookie Ezekiel Elliott and New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

 283.
According to the 49ers Web site, Kaepernick's jersey is the top seller on the team. It was the sixth-best seller before the protest.

 284.
More Kaepernick gear has been sold in the past week than the previous eight months combined, ESPN reported.

 306.
SANTA CLARA _ A familiar gamble by 49ers general manager Trent Baalke will not pay off this season. Not right away, anyway.

 307.
Cornerback Will Redmond, a third-round draft pick out of Mississippi State who was selected despite tearing his right ACL as a junior, was placed on injured reserve Monday and running back DuJuan Harris was signed to a contract.

 308.
Redmond saw his first action in the third preseason game against Green Bay with four tackles and a sack and then recorded five tackles in the finale against San Diego, including on special teams.

 309.
The designation means Redmond will miss a minimum of six games this season. If re-instated, Redmond can begin practicing after six weeks, then must be activated within a two-week window or be placed on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

 310.
Teams are allowed only one player to return from injured reserve, so if another key player were to become injured within the first two games and go on injured reserve, it would be up to the 49ers to determine which one to bring back based on time of recovery. In other words, it's no lock that Redmond plays this season.

 311.
The knee was originally injured in October of 2015, but Baalke said when Redmond was drafted the 49ers were comfortable he would be ready for training camp. Redmond was not ready when camp opened but had played well in his two preseason appearances.

 312.
Other players selected by Baalke with ACL tears include outside linebacker Tank Carradine (second round) and running back Marcus Lattimore (fourth round) round in 2013, offensive lineman Brandon Thomas (third round), cornerback Keith Reaser (fourth round) and fullback Trey Millard (seventh round) in 2014 and wide receiver DeAndre Smelter (fourth round) in 2015.

 313.
Only Carradine and Reaser will be on the 49ers 53-man roster when they open the season Sept. 12 on Monday night against the St. Louis Rams.

 314.
Harris, who was originally waived at the final cutdown to 53 players, joins Carlos Hyde, Shaun Draughn and Mike Davis as the fourth running back on the 49ers roster. He was the second leading rusher behind Davis for the 49ers in the preseason, gaining 131 yards on 28 carries, a touchdown and a lost fumble.

 315.
Last season, Harris gained 140 yards on 27 carries with no touchdowns for the 49ers in two games. He was signed off the Baltimore Ravens practice squad after being released by Seattle.

 316.
-- Taylor Hart, a defensive tackle who played for coach Chip Kelly at both Oregon and with the Philadelphia Eagles, was claimed off wiavers. Hart(6-foot-6, 305 pounds), played in 14 games last season with 30 tackles, starting once. To make room on the roster, safety L.J. McCray was waived.

 317.
-- The 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Chris Harper to the practice squad. Harper, who played at Cal, was on the New England Patriots' practice squad last season, was elevated to the 53-man roster and caught one pass for six yards. Harper was in camp with New England this summer and released on Sept. 3.

 340.
UPDATE: The 49ers announced they have released tight end Bruce Miller

 341.
SAN FRANCISCO _ 49ers tight end Bruce Miller was arrested for assault Monday morning at Fisherman's Wharf, according to a television report.

 342.
Miller, according to KTVU-TV (Channel 2), allegedly tried to check in to the Marriott Hotel Sunday night but was told it was full. He later allegedly attacked a 70-year-old hotel guest and his son, with both needing hospitalization.

 343.
According to the report, Miller fled but was later arrested.

 344.
The 49ers issued the following statement: "The San Francisco 49ers organization is aware of the media report regarding Bruce Miller. We are gathering the relevant facts of this matter and will continue to monitor the situation.

 345.
A call to the San Francisco Police Department was not returned.

 346.
In 2015, Miller pleaded no-contest to misdemeanor disturbing the peace after an argument with his girl friend. He attended a 16-week domestic violence counseling course.

 347.
A seventh-round draft pick in 2011, Miller moved from fullback to tight end this season. He has 75 career receptions for 734 yards and three touchdowns and survived final cuts to make the 53-man roster.

(Nhat V. Meyer/Bay Area News Group)

 373.
Over half the NFL’s team claimed roster scraps off the waiver wire Sunday. But not the 49ers, who stood pat with the initial, 53-man roster they crafted Saturday, with sights squarely set on their Sept. 12 opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

 374.
“The right 53 is what we were trying to get,” coach Chip Kelly said Saturday. “Hopefully we continue to grow as we get ready to play the Rams with this group of guys.”

 375.
This group includes three quarterbacks: starter Blaine Gabbert, top backup Colin Kaepernick, and No. 3 Christian Ponder.

 376.
Rookie Jeff Driskel was the odd-quarterback out, a sixth-round draft pick who got claimed Sunday by the Cincinnati Bengals. Also claimed were wide receiver Bryce Treggs (Philadlephia Eagles), outside linebacker Corey Lemonier (Cleveland Browns) and nose tackle Garrison Smith (Seattle Seahawks).

 377.
Before Kelly announced Saturday that Gabbert would start over Kaepernick, general manager Trent Baalke said last month he would distance himself from that call, as would be the case with other depth-chart issues.

 378.
“I’m not going to sit in there and pick who each starter is, regardless if it’s the quarterback,” Baalke said Aug. 17. “How much clearer can I make it? The head coach is in charge of making those decisions. But we work hand in hand to make the best decisions.”

 379.
It was up to Kelly to explain Saturday’s roster instead of Baalke, who wields ultimate personnel power, as has been the case since 2010. Kelly sounded comfortable with the roster rationale, a positive sign that the first-year coach remains in a honeymoon period with the embattled general manager, whose seen too few of his draft picks develop into stars.

 380.
Here is how their roster looks by position:

 381.
Quarterbacks (3): *Blaine Gabbert, Colin Kaepernick, Christian Ponder. Analysis: It’s a trifecta of 2011 draft picks, led by the one drafted highest, Gabbert (No. 10 overall). He may lug a 8-27 all-time as a starter, but Gabbert enters this season with an air of confidence, as if his record is 27-8. Kaepernick’s national-anthem protest aside, he’ll be background noise, unless Gabbert falters with a rough opening schedule. Ponder’s experience is handy, especially if things go sideways – or financial feuds come into play -- between Kaepernick and the 49ers brass.

 382.
Running backs (3): *Carlos Hyde, Shaun Draughn, Mike Davis. Analysis: Hyde, their workhorse and projected catalyst, remains in the league's post-concussion protocol, but he’s expected to play Week 1, Kelly said. Draughn is a versatile backup, and Davis rebounded well from a flat rookie year. Not much depth here, after the 49ers burned through nine running backs in an injury-plagued 2015.

 383.
Wide receivers (5): *Torrey Smith, *Quinton Patton, Jeremy Kerley, Rod Streater, Aaron Burbridge. Analysis: Baalke emphasized last month how hard it is for young receivers to acclimate to the NFL, and this past month proved that, as he jettisoned all prospects but Burbridge (drafted No. 213 overall in April). Smith and Patton won’t be coveted by fantasy-football owners unless Gabbert dares to take more chances than usual. Kerley, a slot receiver, and Streater, an outside option, must mesh fast after last week’s trades.

 384.
Tight ends (4): *Garrett Celek, *Vance McDonald, Blake Bell, Bruce Miller. Analysis: Vernon Davis carried this unit for so many years, and now it’s up to Celek and McDonald, with assists from Bell and Miller, who’s converted from fullback.

 385.
Offensive line (9): *LT Joe Staley, *LG Zane Beadles, *C Daniel Kilgore, *RG Anthony Davis, *RT Trent Brown, G Joshua Garnett, G Andrew Tiller, C Marcus Martin, OT John Theus. Analysis: This appears a much stouter group from recent, feeble years. Only Staley remains from last season’s opening-day lineup. Davis’ switch from right tackle to right guard (and possibly swing tackle) is remarkable after his 2015 hiatus. Garnett, a first-round draft pick, could spring into action sooner than later at left guard.

 386.
Defensive line (7): *DT Arik Armstead, *DT Quinton Dial, *DT DeForest Buckner, DL Glenn Dorsey, NT Mike Purcell, DT Tony Jerod-Eddie, DT Ronald Blair. Analysis: Time to see what the 49ers got with their top picks from the past two drafts, Armstead and Buckner, 6-foot-7 towers out of Oregon. Dorsey's return from an ACL tear is a big question mark, as in whether he'll be ready for Week 1, which Dial (knee) might not be.

 387.
Outside linebacker (3): *Ahmad Brooks, *Eli Harold, Tank Carradine, (Aaron Lynch). Analysis: Lynch is suspended the first four games, so the 49ers need Harold and Carradine to fill that void, and hope the 32-year-old Brooks can reach his goal of double-digit sacks for the first time in his career.

 388.
Inside linebacker (5): *NaVorro Bowman, *Gerald Hodges, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Michael Wilhoite, Nick Bellore. Analysis: Bowman looks far healthier than a year ago as he launched a stirring comeback that paid off with the NFL’s tackle title. Who’ll be next to him? It’s still a mystery, though fellow Penn State product Hodges could be the favorite. Armstrong is athletic and versatile while Wilhoite and Bellore are at least special-teams cogs.

 389.
Cornerback (7): *Tramaine Brock, *Jimmie Ward, Keith Reaser, Chris Davis, Dontae Johnson, Will Redmond, Rashard Robinson. Analysis: Ward, their 2014 draft’s top pick, takes on a full-time role at a new spot on the outside after playing nickel back. It’s a deep unit but still very unproven and unthreatening, for now.

 390.
Safety (4): *Antoine Bethea, *Eric Reid, Jaquiski Tartt, Marcus Cromartie. Analysis: Reid plans to play with a torn ligament in his thumb while Bethea looks to revert to the 2014 form that earned him team MVP honors from coaches. Tartt is an up-and-comer.

 391.
Specialists (3): K Phil Dawson, P Bradley Pinion, LS Kyle Nelson. Analysis: Same group as last year.

 392.
Injured reserve: WR Bruce Ellington, QB Thad Lewis, WR Eric Rogers, WR DeAndre Smelter, NT Ian Williams (reserve/non-football injury).

 393.
Practice squad (as announced Sunday): Outside linebacker Marcus Rush, wide receiver Dres Anderson, running back Kelvin Taylor, tight end Je'Ron Hamm, cornerback Prince Charles Iworah, linebacker Shayne Skov and offensive linemen Alex Balducci, Fahn Cooper and Norman Price. The final spot is likely ticketed for Chris Harper, a former Cal and New England Patriots wide receiver.
