19.
On 28 April 1835, John Donihoo and his wife Martha Walker Donihoo sold an estate of 600 acres of property with buildings to John Moffett; located on the Great Road, in the Fancy Hill District, roughly between the Bent of Buffalo Creek and Falling Spring Church.
20.
21. Much of this land was originally purchased by Joseph Walker (John Donihoo's father-in-law) from James Grigsby 2 Nov. 1784. Along Buffalo Creek, the Walkers and/or John Donihoo built a sawmill and a forge, and John Donihoo ran a tavern in the house c 1820's to early 1830's.
22. The estate was offered for sale in a detailed advertisment in the Winchester, Virginian ) Wednesday, January 29, 1834. The house was described as two story brick and there was a large barn.
23.
24. We are trying to locate the house, where it stood or even better if it still stands. John Moffett lived there until his death in 1855. In the 1850 census his near neighbors were William and Samuel Burks, Mary Douglass and Thomas Dryden.
25.
26. Are there plat maps available which would show the landowners and their property? That is exactly what we need to locate the Walker-Donihoo-Moffett home. Or, if a descendant or some person knowledgeable in Rockbridge history should recognize this property and know where it was/is located.
27.
28. This was noted in Rockbridge Road Districts, 1841

290.
291. I am trying to do research on several African American families, and one lists her birth as Virginia (vague I know) but that her marriage is recorded to her first husband on March 8, 1827 in Rockbridge her name was Isabella Allen b. ca. 1810 and she married a man named Alexander Bird. After his death she married another black man named Nathanial Hatchell who was born in Georgia, they moved to Michigan and he became a prominent farmer in the area with several tracts of land. There are no records of them in the county (St. Joseph) after 1880, so it is unknown what happened to Nathanial and Isabella.
292.
293. She is sometimes listed in the early records here as Black, sometimes White and sometimes Mulatto. I would like to know if there is a possibility that she was a freed person and there may be records out there for her marriage to Alexander. Ancestry and Family Search are no help, I have exhausted everything on these sites.
294.
295. I am hoping someone can direct me to a place I can write for records or information about her birth and marriage to Alexander. Please do not respond with information from Ancestry or Family Search, as I said I already have everything that the two site can offer.
296.
297. Thank you in advance.

337.
I have a general question. Familysearch has digital images of the personal property tax lists from 1787-1850. I have noticed that some entries show 1 or more white males above 16, but with no horses or other taxable property. And they have no tax assessed. From this I conclude that all white males above 16 were counted, even though they might not have paid any tax. Am I right in that conclusion?
338.
339. Exploring those tax lists, I have been looking for my ancestor. Sometimes he shows up on a list, sometimes he doesn't. I am trying to understand why he might be missing from a list in a particular year. Even the years he appeared in the census, 1810, 1820, 1830, he is missing from the tax lists, although he sporadically shows up in some years in between the censuses.
340.
341. I judge he was always poor and didn't always have a horse. But, having a horse or other taxable property didn't seem to be a criteria for inclusion on the lists. So I would expect to see an entry for him every year, from 1810-1830.
342.
343. Any insights about those tax lists? Any source you can point me to, that would have an explanation?
344.
345. Thanks for your help.

430.
Henry's father (also Henry Ayers) gave consent to the marriage. Isabel (spelled Isable) Reid gave her own consent and age 25. They supposedly had a daughter, Margraet Ayres born ca 1793 who married Andrew Lewis in Patrick in 1816 and moved to Russell county who by DNA appear to be matches to our Lewis ancestor from Tazewell (numerous 4-8 cousin through multiple children).
431.
432. The DNA also connects 4-8 with William Ayers -Nancy Grigsby line from Rockbridge (William and the younger Henry would be of the same generation), Edward Edmond Ayers (1808-1887) and Samuel Ayers (1804-1871) born somewhere in VA who immigrated to Brown/Bartholomew county Indiana and finally Elihu Ayers who married Lydia Owen and lived in Patrick county VA, who would be contemporary to William Ayres with Nancy, and Henry Ayers with Isabel.
433. So far about 30+ matches (my older DNA participant is 89 yo).
434.
435. Does anyone have any information for either Henry Ayres or Isabel Reid? Or the parents of Edmond and Samuel who went to Indiana? Could the older Henry be a father or uncle to William Ayres who married Nancy Grigsby?

619. As I live in Florida and cannot get to Lexington until next year, could someone research the county deaths for Samuel and see if his father is listed. We know Samuel was alive in 1814. Believe also that this is the Samuel, as well as his eldest son, Samuel Junior, in the 1810 census.

Some of my relative -- Will Plott, Edward Plott, John Plott Bob Curtis, Henry Vest and Eliza Vest-- are pictured!

947.
I was on this message board previously looking for the father of my gg grandfather on my mother’s side, William Smith. William was born and lived in Rockbridge County. After wasting three years of research basing William’s birth date on the fact that his age at death was given as 84, I now know that the age given at his death in 1871 is incorrect. Previous researchers have identified 1794 as William’s approximate birth date. This date corresponds with census data. We know his wife Polly Foran (Forhan;Forhand) was born in 1795.
948.
949. Using the new birth date, I searched for places where individuals lived near each other and family relationships. William, as well as his son and grandson, lived in the House Mountain area. I found a Samuel Smith who married a Rosanna Savage on 17 June 1793. Witnesses to this marriage were William Tidd and Timothy Foran. Timothy Foran had property on and lived in the House Mountain area. Also, Timothy Foran was the father of Polly Foran who married William Smith.
950.
951. The 1810 Census lists, as far as I can find, only one Samuel Smith and a Samuel Smith Jr. The data for Samuel lists one boy between the ages of ten and sixteen and one boy between the ages of sixteen and twenty-six. I believe the oldest boy is William Smith and the youngest Levi Smith. I believe Levi is a brother to William. Also William was a witness to the marriage of Levi and Anna Connor on 6 June 1814.
952.
953. When a father and son with the same first name in the same location are on a census, the son is usually carried as junior. Samuel Jr should also be a son of Samuel and Rosanna—the first born.
954.
955. If anyone using this message board can provide any information to support or rebut my conclusions please do so, and provide any information you can on Samuel Smith.

1075.
I know and have much evidence that John Green was born in Goochland Co, VA and died in 1849 in Rockbridge Co, VA.
1076.
1077. John Green served in the Revolution, he enlisted January or Febuary 1776, from Goochland Co., Virginia. His Regiment was the Ninth Virginia of continental Service and his captain was S. Woodson. He was in the battles of Brandywine and White House and was discharged in 14 Dec 1777.
1078.
1079. His wife was Susannah Lawrence and their son Henry Lawrence Green, was my 3rd G-grandfather... Now here is my problem...
1080.
1081. I have seen MANY people list John Green's Name as W. John Green or John W. Green... But in all of my research I have NEVER seen any evidence that he had a W. anywhere in his name. There are several John Green's in VA during this time that have a "W", but not him... If you have any evidence, Please let me know. thanks... Jim Greene
