141. Beatty
142.
143. Cartmell, in his history of the lower Shenandoah Valley (1905) gave us quite a sketch of this old and influential family. NOTE: Listed in a later version of same book.
144.
145. Three brothers sons of the Reverend Andrew Beatty, a Presbyterian Minister, emigrated from Ireland, accompanied by General Montgomery, later of Revolutionary War fame.
146.
147. One of three brothers, Andrew, settled in Massachusetts and married into the Adams family.
148. His son, John Beatty, came south and settled in Loudoun County, Virginia, where he married Margaret McConihay. whose father gave them a farm on Fiery Run, now the home of Emma Moore.
149.
150. John Beatty, 2nd, and an old school Baptist Preacher, with churches at Arco and Browntown. During his pastorate he built Faith, Hope and Charity, three churches located in the Fork Magisterial District.
151. Among his wealthy parishioners he numbered Mrs Catherine Miller, mother of the late Col Samuel Rolfe Millar, who out of appreciation to the services of that church, presented him with a grist mill located on Happy Creek, and which he operated for many years.
152. John, Thomas and William Beatty were soldiers in the Indian and Revolutionary War.
153.
154. In 1794, Henry Beatty, of Winchester was appointed Colonel of the 31st Virginia Regiment, and was in command of the Crainey Island in 1813. For his services Congress presented him with a sword.
155. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Winchester, and died 1849 at the ripe old age of 84.
156.
157. In 1817, John Beatty and Richard Pomeroy appear as witnesses in the county court in Winchester.
158. In 1822, William Beatty then moved to Indiana, records the sales of lands on the Hawskill for the sum of $500.00.
159.
160. In 1825, John Beatty and Lovinia, his wife, record the sale of a tract of land, “lying along Happy Creek.”
161. In 1832, Mary Magdelene Beatty of Ohio, widow of David Whitmore, records power of attorney for sale of certain lands along Happy Creek.
162.
163. S.H. Beatty was a member of Company E. 7th Va Calvary, William A. Beatty, member of Company D. 49th Va Infantry, “Warren Blues.” William H. Beatty was a member of Company D. 23rd Va Calvary, all in the Confederate Service.
164.
165. Mrs. Bertha Beatty Ware and Miss Madeline and Welton Beatty as also Mrs. Gasque came of this distinguished linage.
166.
167. “John Beaty, son of Andrew Beaty, came via Pennsylvania to Loudoun county. Later he moved to Linden, then called Fiery Run, where he married Margaret McConchey Her father gave them a good farm as a wedding present. John Beaty was a justice of the Peace, when that office was one of much importance, second only to the County Court. He settled up three large estates, that of Alexander Finnell (now the Remount Station), Thomas Johns’ estate at Linden and Grandfather Lewin’s estate. He was a familiar figure about the Court House, and wore cloth leggings when he went to town.”
168.
169. Wm. A. Beaty was a member of Co. D, 23rd Virginia Cavalry. Wm. H. Beaty served the Confederacy in the 8th Virginia Infantry.
Like all the Beatys, Walton had a good voice, sang in the Baptist church and faithfully attended its public functions.
170.
171. He was a profound student of Holy Writ, but in the Golden Rule rather than in creed and dogma of the church, he had his guiding star.
172.
173. Inheriting from his father a love of machinery, he thoroughly mastered gas and electrical machines, and was never known to fail to make a machine function.
174.

176.
177. Their lathes were always “truce,” the finished articles of the highest class, and always up to specifications. There was little or no reason to inspect their offerings.
178.
179. These men were inherently honest, it just ran in the family.
180.
181. One the passing of such as Welton Beaty, we thought of Life as an old yellow-leafed ledger in which have been entered up to our Debit or Credit, the deeds done in the body. The book is almost filled and the accounts are being closed or transferred to the cleaner pages of the “Lambs Book of Life.”.
182.
183. The large number of relatives and friends who gathered at the Baptist Church on Saturday last, attested to the love and esteem in which Welton Beaty was held by the entire community. The beautiful flowers added must and additional testimony.
184.
185. Beatty - Data given by Mrs. Berty Ware:
186.
187. Andrew, first Beaty, came to America from Ireland (Scotch family left Scotland because of religious persecutions) with his uncle Gen. Richard Montgomery. Married Sarah Adams. He located to Warren Co. as young man and preached all over that section as long as he was able to ride his horse. Later preached in his home. He was born 1765, died 1849. He married first Margaret McConihay and lived where the present Samuel Moore home stands.
188. Later moved up the road where he died. The last home was given to him by one of the church members Mrs. Randolph. His second wife was a young widow Lovinia Edmonds, nee Owens, widow of Elias Edmonds who died in the war of 1812. John Beaty built the churches of Faith, Hope and Charity in the Fork.
189.
190. My father’s father was son of John Beaty by his first wife and his mother was the second wife’s child.

He was a familiar figure about the Court House, and wore cloth leggings when he went to town.”
225.
226. Wm. A. Beaty was a member of Co. D, 23rd Virginia Cavalry. Wm. H. Beaty served the Confederacy in the 8th Virginia Infantry.
Like all the Beatys, Walton had a good voice, sang in the Baptist church and faithfully attended its public functions.
227.
228. He was a profound student of Holy Writ, but in the Golden Rule rather than in creed and dogma of the church, he had his guiding star.
229.
230. Inheriting from his father a love of machinery, he thoroughly mastered gas and electrical machines, and was never known to fail to make a machine function.
231.
232. Many years ago, when, associated with his father in the manufacture of spokes, handles made of hickory, we had reason to visit their factory on Commerce Street frequently, being then engaged in exporting to England the product of the Beaty, Sumption and other operators.
233.
234. Their lathes were always “truce,” the finished articles of the highest class, and always up to specifications. There was little or no reason to inspect their offerings.
235.
236. These men were inherently honest, it just ran in the family.
237.
239.
240. The large number of relatives and friends who gathered at the Baptist Church on Saturday last, attested to the love and esteem in which Welton Beaty was held by the entire community. The beautiful flowers added must and additional testimony.
241.
242. Beatty - Data given by Mrs. Berty Ware:
243.
244. Andrew, first Beaty, came to America from Ireland (Scotch family left Scotland because of religious persecutions) with his uncle Gen. Richard Montgomery. Married Sarah Adams. Established a Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. Son, John Beaty was educated for a Presbyterian Minister, but after hearing the Primitive Baptist preach joined that church. He located to Warren Co. as young man and preached all over that section as long as he was able to ride his horse. Later preached in his home. He was born 1765, died 1849. He married first Margaret McConihay and lived where the present Samuel Moore home stands.
246.
247. My father’s father was son of John Beaty by his first wife and his mother was the second wife’s child.

283.
I am researching the names of Hickerson, Pomeroy, Lehew and Beaty all are ancestor who lived in the Warren county area. My mother was a Pomeroy and I have found them baack to Richard Pomeroy who married Mary Lehew the daughter of Spencer Lehew. This is my mother's fathers side of the family. Her father was Grover Cleveland Pomery. I beleave he is buried in Harmony Hollow but have no idea where to look at this time. My Grandmother was Bessie Carson Hickerson. I have traced her back to her fathers' father. He was William H. Hickerson. William was killed at the Battle of Cold Harbor during the civil war in 1864. The date I have is 5 June 1864. I have a birth date of 4 August 1822 for him. I can not find his mother or father.
284. I beleive that he may be the brother of the Hickerson who either ran or owned Strawsburg Pottery. I also think he could have been born in the old Rappahannock County. He married Ammanda Myers who was born on 2 Feb. 1814 and I have no futher information on her. Richard pomeroy is to beleived to have entered this country through the port of Alexandria. This is as far as I have gotten. If anyone can give me more information or contacts I would be very greatful.

363.
I’m doing genealogical research and I’m looking for anything to do with the Tipton-Sumption-Perry families in & around Front Royal in the 1800s. I am related to all three families and I am willing to share any information I have also. I have traced the Tipton line from the United Kingdom through Jamaica to Maryland and into Virginia then into Tennessee as it spread across the country. I have been able to trace my own line to my second Great Grandmother Bruci Tipton in Front Royal. I have traced most of her brothers & sisters but there are still some unanswered questions and her father Dewitt/David Clinton Tipton along with his brothers & sisters but again there are some holes that need filling. I am particularly interested in his/their father & mother, Jacob Tipton & Harriett Perry and I am going to post another tread about them too. I have also been tracing the Sumption line into Virginia and back into Ohio but believe it started in Pennsylvania. In the Perrys it is hard being one of the original families in Virginia and there are many Perrys in & around there , trying to trace them is a challenge. As with most Southern families everyone is named after someone which I like and think is a good thing, a traditional thing that keeps the family history alive but as a researcher it is a nightmare with generation upon generation named the same name with no middle names and only dates to distinguish the difference. The other problem is the populations in small isolated towns as families grow with brothers & sisters from one family marrying brothers & sisters in another family and all named the same names. That is the case I am having, in one way it is bad but other ways good, I have found relatives and said to myself “who is this now” but by tracing his name back I was able to uncover his parents & grandparents by using the names handed down. Then throw the other counties in the mix, Frederick & Shenandoah not to mention the other surrounding counties and then as Frederick County was divided into the others. So now you have a relative that has lived in three different counties over the years but he hasn’t moved at all just the county name has changed. Anyway anyone willing to share a story or any information about any of the families mentioned I would be happy to listen and share anything I know about them, Thank You.

456.
I am hoping someone might be able to help me locate a family cemetery near Bentonville/Jacksonville mentioned in a deed book. In 1907, my great great-uncle Algernon (Algie) George, sold a 2-acre property to Emma J. Mathes (Matthews?). This property apparently contained a family burial ground which the deed stipulated Algernon gets to continue to have access to and add grave sites to it, if needed. I would love to locate this burying ground, assuming it is still visible. The deed book described the property as "lying and being in South River Magisterial District at Jacksonville about one mile East of Bentonville, known as the School House & Legg lots, along the Bentonville-Brownville road, bounded on the East, West & North by the lands of the said Emma J. Mathes, and on the South by the County road [meaning the Bentonville-Brownville Road?]"
457.
458. If anyone has a guess of where this private cemetery might be -- and if it still is visible, I would love to hear from you. My best guess is that it's on the north side of Bentonville-Browntown Road somewhere between Matthews Lane and Jenkins Hill Road. Perhaps if I could find out where a school house once was in that section of the road, it would narrow things down. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

618.
My G Grandmother was Mary or Molly Frances Stump. She was born in Reliance, VA on January 30, 1871 and died near Middletown on February 23, 1930. In the 1880 census, she is living as Mary Frances Stump with Mayland Chiles in Middletown, VA (her son Raymond's middle name is Chiles). She had three husbands: Robert Oscar Booth, Philip Lentz (the brother of my other GG Grandmother Alice Virginia Lentz) and Charlie Lentz (Philip's son). I am trying to find her parents. I have found some evidence that her mother might be Annie C. Stump who was the daughter of Daniel Stump and Eliza Jane Carson, also of Warren County. Annie married later in life to Isaac Hottel. In one of the census, Annie states that she has 8 children-7 living. However, I can only find that she had one child with Isaac--Annie Mae Hottel. Any help is greatly appreciated!
