  3. In 2001 I decided that starting a company that specialized in online video was a good idea – and it was. I partnered up with some smart people and ran a nice, profitable company for many years. Our products were well received, our technology was strong, we grew behind revenue with no debt – and our customers were (as a rule) happy with our service and willing to pay. Until they day they weren’t – which was when they discovered our same service for free.&lt;br /&gt;

The free service was called YouTube – and while it didn’t offer all the refinements that we had added to the online video experience, it had one important, unbeatable differentiator: it was free. Did I mention free? &amp;nbsp;– as in no cost, nada, nothing. We had to pay for servers, rack space, bandwidth, offices and people…all the normal expenses associated with a normal business, and apparently, they didn’t. So like paying for browsers, paying for email, paying for word processing – I slowly slipped into that category of people who had been trampled by advancing technology. I didn’t feel TOO bad, while I did lose 95% of my client base, it was at the hands of the biggest kid on the block: Google / YouTube. It wasn’t like I got beat up by a punk.&lt;br /&gt;

  19. So now I’m a bit more careful with my tech ventures – I keep holding up the “what if this was free?” filter when looking at new opportunities. And really, any smart technology company should – the playing field is littered with discarded corpses of formerly brilliant companies that were wiped out by a single word: free.&lt;br /&gt;

  21. I’ve kept close to developments on YouTube – because what was essentially my enemy, is now my friend. If others can use this free technology for their business ventures, why couldn’t I put it to use for my own purposes? I began building websites and YouTube channels that increased client exposure on Google organically due to Google’s love of its latest acquisition: YouTube. While the SEO driver was strong, it was hard to get clients to commit to an ongoing schedule of video production – and that’s what it takes to make the SEO / Google / YouTube magic happen. You can’t just do one video, put it up and step back in anticipation of the stampede – it’s an ongoing process.&lt;br /&gt;

  23. By now I was doing quite a bit of production in the live space using Internap (paid) and a host of free streaming services to distribute my productions. I had a row of PCs – when we started a webcast I would literally fire up half a dozen encoding systems and stream out to the world via Ustream, Livestream, Justin.TV and others. I loved the immediacy of live webcasting, you got audience response right away not days later. It reminded me of live television but, considering most of the live services I was using were free, without the BIG MONEY risk. I did become an expert of sorts at the variety of live free streaming portals. YouTube announced it was going into the free live streaming space – but to qualify you had to have a billion subscribers – which was an odd measure: people who liked video-on-demand qualified you to stream live. I (and most of the rest of the live streaming world) simply ignored the option.&lt;br /&gt;

  25. Well, a strange thing happened – YouTube kept lowering the bar for “Live Event” approval until they finally dropped it to almost nothing a few weeks ago. If you have no copyright violations and can verify with an SMS message (hint: you can use the same number for multiple accounts) you can stream live on YouTube. The largest cloud video network on the planet is now yours to use for free! It’s amazing – you can use Hangouts for quick-n-dirty webcasts, or go into a more complex setup mode for real professional webcasting. You can embed the streams, record them to the channel for VOD viewing – everything all for free. And let’s face it; you were going to upload a version of your webcast to YouTube anyway for endless free playback and SEO benefits, right?&lt;br /&gt;

  27. In thinking about this development – some other companies that I’ve used in the past popped into my mind, namely Ustream, Livestream, Justin.TV and a host of other live webcasting platforms. Most of these are free – but are advertiser sponsored ad the “free” level. If you upgrade to a monthly fee, you can eliminate advertising and unlock other features depending upon how far you go. There are (of course) CDNs which charge dearly for live events – their mantra is the more people who watch, the more bandwidth you use and the more money you pay - much like the pricing schedule my company had many years ago that we finally gave up on. As far as I can tell, you can opt for no advertising on free YouTube streaming and you can embed the player on to any page you want – so you’re not even forcing exposure to display advertising. I suppose the ubiquitous YouTube branding hangs around – but really, haven’t we all but shut that out of our collective consciousness?&lt;br /&gt;

So the question remains – what will happen to the advertiser-supported free live streaming services (Ustream, Livestream, Justin, etc.) and how will this all affect the big-money live streaming guys (Limelight, Akamai, Internap. etc.)? While the latter have weathered the rise of free VOD by adding additional services and features such as edge serving, content optimization and general media hosting – one has to ask: what’s the benefit of using Ustream or Livestream over YouTube Live? Will the lure of 100% free (and endless market penetration) upset the game for ad-paid and cash-paid live streaming? Will their current clients begin making those phone calls I heard several years ago (repeated many times) “We love you guys – but this service is FREE!” or is the space big enough these days that everyone gets to stay at the table? If history is going to repeat itself – then there are several established companies who are going to hope YOU (Mr. Live Content Creator) never read this article!&lt;br /&gt;

In fact, it’s become such a standard of everyday life that it may be hard to stay abreast of all the cool technology changes that have occurred in the past year or so. And it’s understandable – once broadcast TV became a household item, the technology essentially stood still for almost 40 years while we were obsessed with content: network shows, primetime, live newscasts, serials, stars – it’s no wonder the technology of the medium stagnated while we focused on the living room screen.&lt;br /&gt;

But the web is all about multitasking and parallel lines of development – so while we see more (and better!) content filling up our viewing time from sources we never imagined even five years ago (Netflix Originals, AMC, FX and a host of other new entries in the content space) – technology has continued to march forward on the background, even while this new parade of visual distractions keeps us focused on the now rather than the tomorrow.&lt;/div&gt;

  44. Anyway, I spend a lot of time in this space – and I thought I ‘d take this opportunity to offer up my Top Three Technologies that you may have missed while watching Game of Thrones or Sons of Anarchy. Here’s the list (and why they’re important):&lt;/div&gt;

  48. 1) &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.broadcastplay.com/&quot;&gt;http://www.broadcastplay.com/&lt;/a&gt; - At first you might say “what’s the big deal about THIS?”, but it’s really a game changer. Previously, the ability to manage large amounts of content in a real-time, scheduled environment was limited to Broadcast and Cable Facilities operating giant, expensive “playout” machines. Well, you may not have the content – but now everyone can be their own TV station complete with scheduling, commercial insertion, graphics overlay…all for around $400. Ok, while it’s true that no one might want to watch an endless channel of your home movies and cell phone clips – it feels good knowing you can do it! For those who don’t have the OTHER end of a broadcast facility lying around their backyard – there’s &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.uniplay.tv/&quot;&gt;http://www.uniplay.tv/&lt;/a&gt; who feature Unistreamer Lite for around $600 which allows you to create a 24 hour-a-day channel (like the Broadcastplay folks) AND sends that stream directly to YouTube Live or a myriad of other live streaming services. I can’t personally vouch for either of these products as I simply don’t have enough compelling video clips to put them through their &amp;nbsp;“24 hour” paces – but someday…&lt;/div&gt;

  52. 2) MPEG-DASH – Another geek-only term that will really change the streaming / online industry. Already embedded in many current streaming platforms, MPEG-DASH stands for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP. What does this really mean? It means that the bandwidth / size / device / operating system nightmares that have plagued streaming video in the past are coming to an end. This open-source, player agnostic codec allows you to stream over HTTP – the same protocol as web pages while taking into account network issues – so your cell phone isn’t trying to play back a file encoded for HD playback on the big screen. This will make people’s lives a better place to be – and perhaps, one day in the distance future a small child will ask “Mommy, what’s buffering?” .&lt;/div&gt;

  56. 3) WebRTC – This is the killer technology you’ve never heard of, simply because many people just don’t know it’s there. WebRTC stands for Web (like internet, right?) Real-Time Communications – which essentially means that the video conferencing industry had better find something else to do. It seems Google bought a cool company that had a browser plug-in (think app for your browser) that allows browsers to talk to each other using VIDEO directly – without going through a bunch of encoding and de-coding and streaming servers and voodoo. And in their wisdom, Google just gave it away. They made it part of the Chrome browser environment so it works really well on PCs running Chrome and Android devices. It also works on some other lesser browsers but still hasn’t been adopted by Internet Explorer or Safari (even though the end product resembles Face-Time on an iPad) – BUT industry pundits say it’s only a matter of time.&lt;/div&gt;

  60. So you can now run your own automated, 24-hour-a-day television station that doesn’t buffer while videochatting &amp;nbsp;directly with your friends through a chrome browser. Is the future a great place or what?&lt;/div&gt;

I’m talking about Chromecast, of course – the dongle that turns your monster HD living room video delivery device (fogey-speak: “TV”) into a jukebox of video content. How did we miss seeing this one?&lt;br /&gt;

  65. Simple. If we rewind several years, we all know that it takes a really big and complex box with a monthly service charge (“Cable TV”) and rental fee (“Set-top Box”) to deliver quality programming. I don’t know about you, but my cable company bill is upwards of $200 a month and I only get a few Premium Channels. Even the concept of Premium Channels now seems sort or quaint and antiquated in light of recent developments. (Aside: The Museum of Once-Cool but Now Useless Devices featuring the Veg-O-Matic, The Atari Game Console and the Digital Set-Top Box) BECAUSE timing is everything, right? Google released Google TV (what?) and some kind of audio cube thing and some other hardware stuff that all went “thud” in the great retail space.&lt;br /&gt;

  67. Apple made some inroads with Apple TV and iPad / iPhone connectivity and streaming – but they never posed a real threat to Big Cable. Macs as computers still remained niche and even though the iPad soared in popularity, it was essentially a really big iPhone. Google birthed Android – which could run on anything (harkening back to the original days of Java) and all of a sudden Netflix, Hulu and their brethren rounded the corner with alternative content to Big Cable – but it was hard to make the connection to the LCD in the living room.&lt;br /&gt;

  69. I had one of the first Droids in the Littleton area, and as soon as the RAZR came out, I got one! (Big mistake, because as it turns out the first RAZRs had a thirty minute battery life – and insult was added to injury but the release of RAZR MAXX at the same price point three months later.) but the big deal (I thought) about the RAZR was HDMI connectivity. I could now shoot HD video and watch it on my living room screen – and I could watch whatever video was on my phone on the big screen. True confession time: even though I thought I would use this all the time, I used it maybe five times in the last two years, and generally when Grandparents were present. Instead I opted for a combination of Big Cable, a PS3 (when the kid was home) and a $50 Western Digital device called the NEOTV (when the kid wasn’t home). I liked NEOTV, and while it has the stuff I wanted – it also was hooked into some real questionable content AND I couldn’t customize it. It was good for Netflix and that was that.&lt;br /&gt;

I had a non-profit client who was interested in streaming a large event recently – and so I showed them both Ustream &amp;amp; Livestream figuring they could save money on bandwidth costs by using a free streaming service. The client agreed that this was a good way to go – so I chose Livestream.com as I had just gotten my hands on a copy of Livestream Studio, the Livestream.com answer to Telestream’s Wirecast.&lt;br /&gt;

First off, I had to upgrade my mobile streaming box (I use rack mounted PCs as opposed to laptops because I find the i/o issues in laptops to be too restrictive) from Vista 64 to Windows 7, but it was really about time. It’s a bit tough to find a copy of Windows 7 these days as Microsoft has removed them all from the shelves in light of the release of Windows 8 which is compatible with, hmmm – let’s see – nothing, so be aware that your streamer has to have Windows 7. I checked out all the other hardware requirements and I met most, not all. My motherboard and video card weren’t quite up to snuff for the Livestream Studio specs, but they were close. I figured as long as I wasn’t doing a 4 camera switch to 3 different services at the same time I would probably be OK. Heck, I could always install it and if it didn’t work I could do my hardware upgrades then.&lt;br /&gt;

  127. The install was both good and bad – it was good in the fact that once I hit “install” it pretty much took care of itself, updating frameworks and services as needed and humming along happily. Then, just as it got to the point where it should’ve said “Your software is now installed and ready for use” (I’ve done a few software installs in my time) it started all over again! Yup, right from the top. I started panicking thinking I’d done something wrong – but then I looked on the PDF-only instruction manual and sure enough, it says something about going through the whole thing twice. Second time around was the charmer – there it was!&lt;br /&gt;

  129. I’m using a Core i7 box with three BlackMagic Intensity Pro PCI cards – and for this product, that’s a good thing – because ALL it guarantees to recognize is BlackMagic cards. This is one spot where the Livestream Studio software really excelled: because it only uses these cards, it saw them right away. I had one camera hooked up via HDMI to one of the cards and with NO CONFIGURATION at all – there was video in one of my Livestream Studio monitors. This is a radical departure from Wirecast – where you have to go into Windows Control Panel, set the video parameters of each card, test with the BlackMagic software to make sure you have a signal and THEN fire Wirecast and do additional desktop configuring to get everything matched up. For the novices in video formats – Livestream Studio clearly wins this round. Oh, and additional cameras were just as easy: plug ‘em in and LS (Livestream Studio) sees them no problem.&lt;br /&gt;
  130. Audio, however – was another issue. While Wirecast will “see” all your standard computer audio inputs (via cards or motherboard) LS doesn’t “see” anything except your BlackMagic cards. For me, this was a bit of an issue: my rack has a 12 channel audio mixer because I’ve found that the more inputs you can have on location – the better off you are. Often we’ll be taking a board feed from a band or podium microphone plus some mics for Q&amp;amp;A in the crowd plus a wireless lav from the Master of Ceremonies – all at the same time, so mixing is a must. Normally, I just run the board out to my PC audio line-in, and regardless what encoder or switching software I’m using, my PC audio card shows up on the list and I use that. My cameras are the eyes of the system and my mixer is the ears – all of a sudden I was struck deaf!&lt;br /&gt;

A quick call to the responsive folks at Livestream Studio tech support confirmed that, in fact, LS would not recognize my internal PC audio as a source – but they volunteered a workaround: use the BlackMagic Intensity Pro breakout cable on one of my live cards and switch the audio over to “analog” from “embedded”. This comes with a warning: you must use one of your cards that has live video – I first thought I could do a two camera shoot and bring the audio in via breakout cable on the third card, but no such luck. Once I connected the breakout cable to one of my live cards, switched the settings on the camera / card to “analog” I was all set – my mixer showed up just fine. There’s a handy “air” switch on the LS audio controller that stops audio from following the cameras and just keeps that audio channel going out as your primary audio feed.&lt;br /&gt;

  134. In relatively short order, I had switchable video (2 cameras) and a stable, synced audio source!&lt;br /&gt;

BroadbandVideo, Inc. dba Warehouse38.tv produced another large, live streaming webcast over the weekend worthy of note – this event was attended by over 2800 people (mostly schoolchildren) as part of a non-profit, educational contest. The location was challenging as was the operation of the system: a fully-switched two camera set-up running on the newly released LiveStream Studio. The basic setup was two HDMI cameras coming into the system via Blackmagic Internsity Pro cards, internal Livestream Studio switcher and external room condenser microphones. A single operator controlled the stream, switch &amp;amp; cameras to lower costs.&lt;br /&gt;

  163. Did it generate a lot of income? No, but it provided us with endless hours of broadcasting fun and experimentation as we learned what works and what doesn’t in the live webcasting space. We did manage to pick up an Emmy Award in 2009 (Heartland Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts &amp;amp; Sciences (NATAS)  – Advanced Media / General Multimedia category) with a weekly webcast produced on this very system. Initially we used Windows Media, but that became a stumbling block as FMLE became more common in the live space. Towards the end we hooked up a whole pile of encoders so we could go to all the live services out there simultaneously.&lt;br /&gt;

  165. BUT – the only constant in this business is change – and we’ve moved to all digital platforms and continue to experiment in that space.   178. We posted a 60 second promotional video for a client the night before in a bit
  179. of a hurry – they wanted to get it linked up on their website, so the file was
  180. loaded to the client channel on YouTube with just a headline description: the
  181. name of the company. No description, no title massaging, NO KEYWORDS! So the next
  182. morning one of our team members did a “view source” on the site, pulled the
  183. meta-description from the homepage code, added a few missing items and posted
  184. that to the description of the video on YouTube.&lt;br /&gt;
  185. &lt;br /&gt;
  186. Next, they took the keywords directly from the website and loaded those (again,
  187. with a slight bit of modification) and then re-wrote the headline to include
  188. some key phrases about the product. You know the rest: they hit “save” and
  189. moved on.&lt;br /&gt;

  191. Now it would be one thing if their company was called “ZZZmickle, Inc” and they
  192. made “flerbers” or something nobody was searching on – but the fact is, the
  193. company is called “Managed Benefits, Inc.” and they specialize in, well,
  194. managed benefits in Denver. A pretty generic name in a pretty competitive
  195. industry. I decided to do a YouTube search on “managed benefits” just for a
  196. laugh to see how many billion videos YT returned – and there (much to my
  197. surprise) was our clients’ video in the NUMBER THREE SPOT (discounting the paid
  198. positions, of course). The keywords, description &amp;amp; title changes were made
  199. around 11am, you can see the time stamp on the screen freeze is 1:27pm – two
  200. and a half hours later!&lt;br /&gt;

What I’ve been talking about, of course, is the use of content marketing as opposed to straight advertising. If you create content about your product / service and how it fits in with your viewer’s daily life / interests / hobbies – they’re far more likely to view your company as a trusted source of information than if you simply bombard them with coupons and specials. Clearly, this is the age of content marketing. At one point simply creating a 2-3 minute commercial for your business put you way ahead of the pack, but those days are behind us now. Content marketing demands you embrace an ongoing strategy of information creation that serves several purposes: creates the “trusted information source” image, helps drive SEO with enhanced visibility (especially on YouTube) and creates the potential for the viral / social sharing of information about your business. Not sold on video? When was the last time somebody passed you a whitepaper on Twitter or Facebook? Now think about the same scenario with video – I’ve been sent car commercials, beer commercials and a mountain of other subjects with the comment “Watch This!”, and if I know the person who sent it – I generally do.

  242. techno-creative who’s been working in digital even before there WAS a digital.
  243. And throughout that rather extensive time period, I’ve done something that many
  244. other creatives could not understand: I swore my allegiance to the Microsoft
  245. Operating System.&lt;br /&gt;
  246. &lt;br /&gt;
  247. I’ve heard the whines and the complaints, I’ve endured the file format debacles
  248. (“Oh, we just assumed you’d be using a Mac for Art Direction”) and I’ve even dabbled
  249. for a couple of years on the dark side…but it always came back to two things:
  250. Windows OS (and Windows Hardware overall) were cheaper and essentially did the
  251. exact same thing. And after many, many years of troubleshooting Windows – well,
  252. I’m pretty good at it. I’ve gone from Windows 95 (uh-huh) all the way up to
  253. Windows 7 Ultimate – and considering there are about 18 systems here at the
  254. shop – I work in EVERYTHING in-between. I use Vista 64 for webcasting (nice and
  255. stable!) and Ultimate 7 for HD video editing. My HD editing box has never once
  256. crashed in over two years of daily usage.&lt;br /&gt;
  257. &lt;br /&gt;
  258. So, I get a call from a good friend of mine who we’ll call “Skip” (because that’s
  259. his name) and he explains that he just got a Dell Laptop for his wife and he’s
  260. having issues getting it to work correctly – Skip is a Mac guy and his wife
  261. generally works in Windows. Skip bribes me with lunch and brings his laptop
  262. over to the studio: this is my first “hands on” encounter with Windows 8
  263. outside of the shelves at Best Buy or Office Max. I figure “how much different can
  264. this be?” – I mean, I’m somewhat of a Windows expert, so I’m pretty sure I can
  265. fix whatever is ailing my friend’s laptop. Wrong, Bucko, welcome to Windows 8.&lt;br /&gt;
  266. &lt;br /&gt;
  267. Tiles – who came up with this and why do I need them? I’d don’t use my
  268. production machines to Facebook, tweet, check the weather or view random images
  269. of life on Mars, but for some unknown reason, my normal, placid (low CPU usage)
  270. desktop is flipping and flopping out “tiles” of information like some
  271. meth-smoking, sex-monkey on a search engine overload. I’m getting sports
  272. scores, stock reports, groupon deals and all sorts of other crap thrown in my
  273. face – PLEASE, make it stop! Finally I discover that one of the tiles is marked
  274. “desktop” and I click on that. Peace, quiet and digital calm ensue…I’m not
  275. being bombarded by tile insanity anymore – now we can get busy.&lt;br /&gt;

  277. Let’s see what programs are on this machine – I’ll just go to the Start menu
  278. and see what we’ve got. Wrong, no start menu.&lt;span style=&quot;mso-spacerun: yes;&quot;&gt;&amp;nbsp;
  279. &lt;/span&gt;I can, however, fling my cursor up into the left hand corner of the
  280. screen and that seems to pull up every website ever created in the last 20
  281. years, the same action on the lower right indicates that I might soon end up
  282. back at the “tiles” screen (oh no!) upper right does something but I’m not sure
  283. what and somewhere along the right hand side a bunch of goofy icons show up
  284. that I don’t need “Search, Tab, Call for Laundry Service and Make Me A Sandwich”
  285. (as far as I can tell) – so I settle on “Search”. That takes you to a page that

  287. iPhone, Droid or even a tablet – but what do I need an app on a laptop for?&lt;br /&gt;

  289. Microsoft has provided us with two convoluted routes to the same thing: I can
  290. view eBay (or any other web-based service) as either a fully-functional site in
  291. a browser or as a dumbed-down, half-functional “basterd” version called an app.
  292. Say, this is progress! Not only that – but even venerable Internet Explorer has
  293. two versions: the old “program style” (with the URL bar at the top) and the “app”
  294. version (with the URL version at the bottom). So, just to get this straight –
  295. you can now view websites from within a browser app, or a regular browser or
  296. you can just use the app. Now, the problem that we’re having with this
  297. particular laptop is that it accesses the internet just fine from the IE App
  298. version, but the standard IE Program says “Page not found” no matter what we
  299. point it to. We’ve got fast and huge connectivity, so that’s not the problem –
  300. there seems to be something going on between the App version and the Program
  301. version. I’m sure a call to the friendly Dell helpline will solve this problem.&lt;br /&gt;
  302. &lt;br /&gt;
  303. Now, I couldn’t make this stuff up – we spent four and a half hours (really) on
  304. the phone to Dell support. We started off in customer care – where we told the
  305. tech all our information (12 digit computer service number, full name, company that
  306. purchased the unit, office phone, backup phone and email address) and described
  307. the problem. In VERY broken English he apologized for the problem we were
  308. having and said he would transport us to tech support. This took 25 minutes on
  309. hold where (you guessed it) we provided all our information again (12 digit
  310. computer service number, full name, company that purchased the unit, office
  311. phone, backup phone and email address) to the “hardware tech”. He also had
  312. issues with English as he was clearly speaking to us from a call center in
  313. India (the background noise coupled with his thick accent made conversation a
  314. grinding process) – he explained that he would “take control” of our system and
  315. fix the problem. All we had to do was download a file, install it and we would
  316. be on our way. We tried this 3 times – and each time received the same error
  317. message. Why? Because our web browser was screwed up – but regardless, each of
  318. the three attempts took us across many screens that all required numbers and
  319. letters to be entered. Not an issue if our guide spoke English, but far more
  320. challenging considering this exchange: “Hoaky, to be entering&lt;span style=&quot;mso-spacerun: yes;&quot;&gt;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;the code B then the code C then the number
  321. two”, “B as in boy?”, “No, B as in tango”, “You mean T?”, “That’s what I said –
  322. B”.&lt;br /&gt;
  323. &lt;br /&gt;
  324. I won’t bore you with the remaining 3 hours – but suffice it to say, we went
  325. from Customer Service, to Hardware Support to Software Support to some black
  326. hole of tech support hell where they only speak in grunts and monotone whistles
  327. and throw small chips of flint through the receiver. We finally got the system
  328. so that whatever you clicked on, you got the “app” version of IE (which worked)
  329. and it just hid the non-functional program version of IE somewhere in the
  330. bowels of the operating system never to be seen or heard from again. I gave in
  331. to Tech Support overload and had to call it a day – I meekly asked Skip if it
  332. was too late to plop this piece of crap back in the box and return it to from
  333. whence it came – and he told me that “Window of opportunity” was closed – the box
  334. was his.&lt;br /&gt;
  335. &lt;br /&gt;
  336. I took this experience to heart and began to think about my
  337. own future with Windows 8 – I began to have fantasies of stockpiling used
  338. Windows 7 laptops purchased on Craigslist that I could wear out over time
  339. without ever having to deal with tiles, apps or icons that looked like they
  340. represented changing a carburetor in a ‘53 Mercury. I’m now more careful with
  341. my hand gestures as a rule for fear that collections of past websites or
  342. programs or whatever will suddenly appear sweeping out of the corners of my peripheral
  343. vision to corrupt my normal, stable existence. I have “Fear of 8”!&lt;br /&gt;
  344. &lt;br /&gt;
  345. Postscript: Two days later I was walking thought a local mall and there was a
  346. Dell Kiosk. I asked the gents working there if my friend could bring his Dell
  347. to them and have them take a look at his problems. They informed me that I
  348. should call tech support – I told them that there were many and varied
  349. communication barriers in that process that made speaking to tech support damn
  350. near impossible. They laughed, agreed and said “Here’s what you gotta do – when
  351. asked to pick YOUR language, pick Spanish. That way you get routed to a call
  352. center in Texas where they all speak English anyway. If you pick English, they
  353. just send you to India”. Or, I could just purchase future laptops from
  354. Microcenter, where if it doesn’t work, you put the thing back in the box and

Dad works in the video industry and Teen is very “multimedia” – music, art, and online social media. Mom is more business – but needs to stay in touch almost 24 / 7 due to the nature of her company and service (banking – I heard what you thought). So, we picked our devices respectively: Dad has a Droid, Teen has an iPhone and Mom has (had) a Blackberry.&lt;br /&gt;

Mom likes the evening news and is an old-school channel surfer – generally ending up on a Network show (The Voice, Parenthood, etc.), Dad likes movies and generally goes to Comcast OnDemand to check out what’s on HBO / Starz but Teen went out and bought a PlayStation 3 – so Netflix slowly made its way into our living room. Teen actually went off to College recently and took said PlayStation with him, so Dad bought a NetGear box for $49 so we could continue to the enjoy Netflix (“Troll Hunter”, “Tokyo Gore Police”, etc.).

Recently Mom’s Blackberry had been showing signs of aging (screens popping up that say “Throw me away, I’m obsolete”, no internet connectivity, no email, no YouTube videos, pictures the size of a thumbnail that you can’t enlarge) so Mom decided to drink the KoolAid and go iPhone. Dad figured this was safer than her getting a Droid because the onus of re-education would fall on the Teen – and thus, Mom entered the iPhone world.

  364. All of a sudden, all the stuff that she had been missing with the Blackberry came pouring into her world: videos were shared, images were uploaded, Facebook worked again and so, so much more. Now Mom loves watching videos on her iPhone (Dad long ago discovered the joys of late-night HBO GO on the Droid) so it’s an endless stream of animal videos, Christmas light videos and gurgling baby videos – especially at night. Last night I noticed something of a shift – for years Mom has been watching “That 70’s Show” – something about the characters remind her of a particularly interesting time in her own life and she says Dad is just like Red Foreman. She normally falls asleep to the wacky antics of these pot-smoking teens – but last night was different.

Mom was watching all kinds of videos on her iPhone, while “That 70’s Show” played on in the background –annoying Dad who said “Honey, pick one or the other – TV or phone video!” and just like that, a multi-year tradition came crashing to end – Mom reached over and turned off “That 70’s Show” and continued to watch a baby being snatched up by an eagle on her phone.

And so the transition was complete: Mom was checking out Facebook videos on her iPhone, Dad was trolling for guitar parts on Craigslist, the Teen was doing something (we’re just sure) on his iPhone and the TV? It was off – for the first time in the History of The Family – no one was interested in what was on. An auspicious moment? Not in and of itself – but if this scene is played out across households all across America (as I believe it surely will) then we only have one question to ask: For Whom Does the Bell Toll? It Tolls for TV.
