40.
For my son’s seventh birthday, he requested a Pokemon themed cake. I created this Pikachu cake using supplies I had at home, with no expensive pans required! I love to make cakes for my family and my son loved his cake.

55.
For this cake, I baked two round cakes. One cake I kept as a circle for Pikachu’s head. For the second circle, I cut out two ear shapes as pictured in the bottom left of the image below.

56.
57.
58.
59.
You can see that I used two edges of the round cake as the edge of his ear, then used a butter knife to cut out two petal-shaped wedges.

60.
61.
62.
63.
We were only having a small party so I only created a single layer cake, but if you were having more guests, you could create a double layer with three round cakes. I think you could strategically cut out two more ears from one round cake.

75.
The supplies for this cake were very simple. I used boxed cake mix for the cake. For the icing, I used frosting in a can but I added powdered sugar to thicken the icing. To colour the icing, I used Wilton gel colouring. For the black icing, however, I used premade black icing that I bought too much of during my last cake,

76.
77.
78.
79.
When icing the cake, I piped the base first, then added the eyes and mouth details. Once I added the white icing for reflection of light in the eyes, I think the cake really started to have a good energy.

106.
I love jam, and I decided that this summer season, I would make rhubarb jam – for the first time. The garden in my new home came with a big patch of rhubarb, and honestly, I was a bit intimidated by it. I had never grown rhubarb in my life, so I was a complete beginner when it comes taking care of it and harvesting it. My only experience with making food with rhubarb was making a rhubarb pie with frozen rhubarb I purchased from a grocery story.

107.
108.
109.
110.
Making jam with rhubarb freshly harvested from my garden was such a fun experience. I’ll definitely be making more throughout the harvesting season enjoy and also to give to family and friends as gifts.

111.
112.
113.
114.
Here is everything I learned about making jars of rhubarb jam successfully. Happy canning!

127.
128.
129.
130.
I’ve learned that the rhubarb stalks could be harvested about 3 times per season, or approximately every four to five weeks. Rhubarb is in season from April to September in Canada, where I live.

131.
132.
133.
134.
Rhubarb comes in a variety of colours, ranging from red to green. The colour does not indicate its readiness to pick. The variety growing in my yard is red at the base, fading to green, for example. Before looking into it, I had assumed that I had to wait for the stalks to turn completely red, but nope, that is not the case. You can harvest the rhubarb stalks when they’re between 7 and 15 inches long.

It included a canning funnel, a jar lifter, and a lid lifter. This bundle is a Canadian Tire exclusive, but you can find similar on canning sets on Amazon as well. I did not end up using the lid lifter but the price of the funnel and jar lifter separately was similar to the set, so I figured I’d buy the set and have it on hand just in case.

249.
250.
251.
252.
After sterilizing the jars, I added the jam to each jar, leaving approximately 1/4 inch of headspace at the top. I love how the markings on the Starfrit funnel made this so easy to determine.

253.
254.
255.

257.
258.
259.
I made two batches of the recipe above, and I was able to prepare six 500ml jars. So one batch should yield three 500ml jars.

260.
261.
262.
263.
After filling the jars, I made sure there was no excess on the outer rims of the jars, then added the lids and rings.

264.
265.
266.
267.
I brought the enamel pot to a boil, with the canning rack outfitted at the bottom. Next, I lowered the jars carefully into the boiling water, and boiled them for 15 minutes. I used the canning tongs to remove the jars then placed on a cookie cooling rack for least least 24 hours. Don’t touch the rings to test since that can compromise the seal.

272.
273.
274.
I went through this process about four weeks ago, and my family of four has already gone through two full jars of jam. Preserved jam can be stored for up to a year. It looks like at this rate, I don’t have to worry about this jam spoiling. Our favourite way to enjoy the jam is on toasted crumpets.

382.
383.
Making The Cake Forms – No Special Pans Required!

384.
385.
386.
387.
For shaped cakes, I usually track down a character pan from Wilton and go from there. For this cake, however, I made everything with standard cake pan shapes I already had in my cupboard.

388.
389.
390.
391.
For the head, I used a 9 inch springform pan.

392.
393.
394.
395.
For the body, I used a 10 inch springform pan.

396.
397.
398.
399.
For the paws and the ears, I used cupcake pans that I got from Dollar Tree. The cupcake cavities are slightly larger than a standard cupcake. I used two pans that hold 4 cupcakes each, but I only filled 6 of the cupcake cavities.

400.
401.
402.
403.
This was already a large cake and already way too much for four people to enjoy in a timely manner, so I only did a single layer. If you are serving a crowd you could double everything to make this cake taller.

404.
405.
406.
407.
Assembling the Cake

408.
409.
410.
411.
I put the cakes in the fridge for 3 hours to make sure everything was chilled. After the two cakes and six cupcakes fully cooled, I assembled the cake as shown in the picture below.

412.
413.
414.

415.

416.
417.
418.
This cake was quite large so I used an old cardboard box, trimmed it to size, and covered it with tinfoil to make a makeshift cake board.

419.
420.
421.
422.
I layered the head cake on top of the body cake and trimmed a slight moon-shaped wedge to allow the head and the body to nestle together.

423.
424.
425.
426.
For the paws, I didn’t trim anything, I just placed them close to the body. I wanted to be able to serve the cupcakes to my kids for our little party, so I figured sitting right beside would make it easy to pull it apart.

427.
428.
429.
430.
For the ears, I cut the cupcakes in half height wise, so that the ears weren’t full-height cupcakes. For the bear’s snout, which I didn’t capture in a photo (apologies!), I used the bottom half of one of the ears and placed it on the bottom half of the face.

431.
432.
433.
434.
Prepping the Buttercream Frosting

435.
436.
437.
438.
For the icing, I mixed up two colours. I mixed up a pale rosey colour. I was aiming for a nearly brown pink, so I used approximately 7 drops of green and 8 drops of red food colouring.

439.
440.
441.
442.
I mostly used Savory Sweet Life’s Buttercream Frosting Recipe. The recipe turned out great! I say mostly because I thought I had enough butter for two batches, but I only had enough icing for one. I used one batch of the buttercream frosting, which I used for the pink parts of the cake. Then I made up a batch of Jacksonsjob’s Old-Fashioned Margarine Frosting which mixed up nicely. I used the margarine frosting on the belly, snout and inner ears.

443.
444.
445.
446.
Decorating the Teddy Bear Cake

447.
448.
449.
450.
I piped the coloured buttercream frosting in place first, using a closed star frosting tip. I made up and down motions to put little “flowers” of fur. My metal tip was a bit bent, and with two of the tines on the star tip touching, which gave an interesting effect.

451.
452.
453.
454.
I barely had enough icing to cover the cake, phew! That worked out. I used the margarine frosting next on the snout and ears.

455.
456.
457.
458.
I had a random tube of black ready-to-use decorating icing from Cake Mate in my cupboard, so I used that to make the eyes, nose and mouth. To give some life to the eyes, I added a few round sprinkles as a glimmer of shine.

459.
460.
461.
462.
For the feet, I used chocolates (specifically Reese’s Cups and Aero Minis) to suggest paw pads and toe beans. Thinking of it now, I probably should have made paw prints on the upper paws as well, but hey, hindsight is 20/20.

463.
464.
465.
466.
Here is how the cake turned out once I finished adding the frosting:

512.
I am a total candle newbie, and I was able to use this 17oz Electric Wax Melting Machine by PEEWF Household Equipment to make my first batch of homemade candles. This method required no double boiler, so if that method makes you nervous, this machine could make candle making more approachable for you – like it did for me!

542.
There are a ton of candle making kits on Amazon, but this one caught my eye since it’s an all-in-one solution. I wanted to try out a kit that would include everything I needed to get started.

568.
I decided to try out the PEEWF Beeswax Candle Making Kit For Adults Beginners. This candle making kit seemed like a good value considering I wouldn’t need to purchase a separate hot plate. At the time that I purchased it, there were two options, one for a $70 Canadian price point and one for a $135 price point. At the time of this article, the price has gone down 10%!

569.
570.
571.
572.
I purchased the cheaper price point because the additional items featured in the more expensive kit didn’t seem worth the nearly double price point.

Kit 1 doesn’t have the fragrance, dyes, or gloves. Kit 2 has a few more packs of wax and 2 extra tins. It includes a silicone spoon instead of a metal one, which is better for the non-stick surface of the inner pot. Kit 1 includes a silicone mold while option 2 does not. The dyes and fragrance looked a bit cheap so I preferred to buy these separately, personally.

713.
The Wax Heat Machine reminds me of a little rice cooker. It’s quite small. I feel like the imagery makes it look a bit bigger, but maybe it’s an illusion since they have a child operating it on the product photo (see image to the right).

714.
715.
716.
717.
There is a short and sweet instruction manual – which was simultaneously simple and confusing. Some of the pictures don’t reflect the kit, such as step five in the image shows the wax being poured from another container with a spout, which is not included in the kit.

724.
725.
In addition to the tins, it includes this silicone mold. I was a bit confused about why this was included with a candle kit. I fell down a Google rabbit hole and learned about wax sachets. Wax sachets are used to freshen up small spaces like drawers, closets, cars, and bathrooms. The wax is usually made of natural ingredients like beeswax or soy wax, and the sachets come in different shapes and sizes. They are an alternative to traditional air fresheners with the benefit of not using harsh chemicals and are eco-friendly. I’ve never tried one, but now I want to.

792.
Here is where I wasn’t sure if the wick should be wedged in the skinnier part of the key shaped cut out. The wick seemed too thick to stay within this section, cutting into the outer waxy edge of the wick. Following the instructions in the kit, there’s no guidance on this.

805.
806.
807.
So this is advertised as a Candle Making Kit, however, the instructions are generic, and do not actually guide you through the exact process of making the 4oz candles in your kit. I figured out on my own that I would want to fill the candles to the line on the tin. By volume, wax weighs 20% less than water, so I crunched some numbers and figured out I would need 3.2 oz of wax for each candle, or 6.4oz total for both tins. In other words, a 4oz container does not contain 4oz of wax, which may not be not intuitive for someone totally new to this.

808.
809.
810.
811.
The kit doesn’t include a scale, so I got my kitchen scale out. I measured it out, plus a little extra, just in case I was wrong about the calculations.

815.
Let’s Melt the Wax

816.
817.
818.
819.
I poured the measured beeswax beans into the inner pot of the wax melting machine. It barely had enough room for the 6.4 oz of wax.

820.
821.
822.
823.
I turned the machine on, then selected the Solid button. The instructions recommend this setting when using wax with a bean look. For Solid wax, it sets the temperature of the machine to 185 degrees Fahrenheit or 120 degrees Celsius. If it is canned wax or shaved wax, “ . . . “ no instructions for you. I’m assuming that you’re setting to the Canned setting, which would change the setting to 167 degrees Fahrenheit or 75 degrees Celsius.

844.
845.
846.
847.
Now I was a little confused: on the picture guide, it says “heat 70°C.” It doesn’t tell you to adjust it to 70° C after melting at full heat for a certain amount of time, nor it doesn’t make it doesn’t make any mention of 70° Celsius in the written set of instructions AT ALL. So I had done 10 minutes on the automatic temperature setting, and it was showing 237°F, the equivalent of 113 degrees C. At the time, I wasn’t sure if this was fine.

848.
849.
850.
851.
I later realized that there is an error in the instructions, because 185°F is equivalent to 85°C not 120°C.

852.
853.
854.
855.
All in all, the instructions were throwing me for a loop. Between errors and inconsistency, what was I to believe?!

856.
857.
858.
859.
I panicked and switched the units to metric and reduced the temperature manually to 70°C. So for my first set of candles, I did the first ten minutes at 85°C then the next 10-15 minutes at 70°C.

860.
861.
862.
863.
In retrospect, I think I would have been fine to keep the temperature on the automatic setting. My understanding after rereading the fine print is that it will raise the temperature up to a maximum of 120°C to melt it more quickly, but after the melting is completed, it will return the device to either 85°C if you chose the solid setting, or 75°C is you chose the canned setting. The instructions included never indicate that you need to wait for it the machine to automatically cool.

864.
865.
866.
867.
However, there is no mention of 70°C for either solid or canned, so overall, the messaging was super confusing.

868.
869.
870.
871.
I let the machine do its thing, and after about 22 total minutes, even with the reduced temperature, the wax was successfully melted.

880.
881.
882.
The basic kit does not include any fragrance oil nor any dyes. For my first attempt, I did not add any scents. I was reading that adding essential oils to candles can be dangerous for a variety of reasons, so I want to be sure to research traditional fragrance oils more before taking the plunge into scented candles.

883.
884.
885.
886.
However, I did purchase a set of Candle Shop Candle Wax Dyes in a variety of colours, sold separately from the kit. Each packet is 0.1 oz, which seems small, but you only need a tiny bit for a candle. I used Aquamarine 12 for my first attempt.

887.
888.
889.
890.
To dye 2.2 pounds of wax, you only need 0.08 ounces of the dye. Since I was making 6.4 oz of candles here, I only needed 0.015 oz.

891.
892.
893.
894.
I had a problem: my food scale was not sensitive enough to measure to this degree. In fact, after zeroing out my scale, even if I dumped the whole packet in, it didn’t register the amount. I ended up eyeballing an amount, and I suspect it was a little too much, but at this point, I figured I’d give it a try to I’d adjust my expectations for next time.

895.
896.
897.
898.
Once the wax was completely melted, I mixed in the flakes of dye. According to the dye packet, melting the dye requires the temperature to be between 152 – 194F, or 66 C – 90C. I was sitting around 70 C by that point, so I was ready to go.

899.
900.
901.
902.
I put a piece of kraft paper down over my surface, just in case of any spills. I filled my containers up to the fill line, pouring from the spout, which is really not much of a spout at all. It wasn’t easy to pour from such a wide mouthed area.

910.
I had a little extra wax, so I poured it into the silicone mold provided with the kit, just for fun. This wax isn’t scented, so I have no idea what I’ll do with this, but I just wanted to see how it would turn out.

918.
Now it’s time to wait to see how these candles set. The kit does not indicate how long you should wait before burning. Some sites said to wait minimum 24 hours, while others say to wait two weeks for the beeswax candles to fully cure.

927.
928.
929.
930.
While we wait, let’s talk about the candle making process with the PEEWF Beeswax Candle Making Kit.

931.
932.
933.
934.
Overall, how do I feel about the kit?

935.
936.
937.
938.
Keep in mind that I’m brand new to candle making, so I’m not comparing to any other kits out there. I was looking for a way to make candles occasionally for my own use with minimal fuss, without the use of a stove, since I’m typically crafting from my basement.

939.
940.
941.
942.
The machine itself seems well made. I wish the lid was clear rather than only slightly translucent. Although it is lightweight, it feels quite nice. If I were to make any requests, I wish it had the set temperature and the actual temperature separate on the display, so you can see what the machine is trying to do versus where it’s currently sitting in comparison. I spent a lot of time in confusion about whether the machine was set to the correct temperature.

943.
944.
945.
946.
I wish there was a true spout on the inner bucket. For these particular containers it wasn’t that difficult to pour the wax, but I imagine with certain candle molds, it could get dicey.

947.
948.
949.
950.
I think the instructions could have been more polished, especially when sold as a kit. There were some bad translations, incomplete sentences, and conflicting information in the “How to Make Candle” section compared to the “Guide of Using Wax Heat Machine.” Sometimes they used Celsius only, or sometimes they used both but swapped between showing Celsius or Fahrenheit first.

951.
952.
953.
954.
When writing the script for the video, I returned to the product listing to get some key details and noticed that there is actually more succinct instructions included on the listing itself. If they had printed out these instructions and tucked it into the supplies box, I think it would have been a way better experience.

955.
956.
957.
958.
Here are the instructions that are included in the listing:

959.
960.
961.
962.
Our candle making kit only needs 6 steps.

963.

991.
You can make beautiful, scented, and creative candles as decorations or holiday gifts!

994.
995.
【More details】:Melting point of beeswax: 140-147.2°F, pouring temperature: 134.6-140°F. Some suggestions: adding ratio of essential oil: 3%-10%, adding ratio of dyeing block: 1‰, adding temperature of essential oil: 143.6-152.6° F.

996.

997.
998.
999.
1000.
Honestly, if they had adjusted the instructions above with minor modifications like the required setting (Solid) for the wax they provided, plus let you know what is the pouring temperature, those instructions would have been much more effective than what was included in the kit.

1026.
Negatives:

1027.
1028.
1029.
1030.

1031.
learning curve due to instructions, “kit” does not actually feel like a kit and feels more like a collection of supplies

1032.
1033.
1034.
1035.
no spout on inner pot; be sure to wipe any wax that leaks down the side of the inner pot before returning it to the machine

1036.
1037.
1038.
1039.
inner pot is small; if you want to make a candle bigger than 8oz you will need to make multiple batches of wax

1043.
1044.
The Final Result

1045.
1046.
1047.
1048.
Here is how my very first candles turned out. I actually love the colour! There is quite a bit of dipping, most likely from those temperature fluctuations where I was fussing with the settings and trying to figure out what was going on.

1118.
At the time of publishing this article, I’ve now made about 10 candles using the PEEWF Wax Melting machine. I plan to continue to make more using it. For larger candles, you do need to heat up multiple batches of wax since the capacity is quite small. When using the colour dye, you have to have the exact ratio of wax to dye otherwise you’ll see the pouring line between the batches.

1145.
Check out at this sweet pink children’s sewing machine that I won on an online auction for a whole $6.00. This is the Sears Lockstitch Child’s Sewing Machine, model number 49 19741. I couldn’t find out much about the history of this machine online. The box says that it was made in France, and it was imported for the Canadian market for Simpsons Sears. I assumed that this machine is from the 1970s or early ‘80s since Simpsons-Sears officially changed its name to Sears Canada in 1984. This article was originally created as a video tutorial, and one of the commenters, David, let me know it was a 1974 model. The Sears Lockstitch Child Sewing Machine is a rebranded Singer Junior Miss Sewing Machine.

1152.
I did a quick search on Ebay and was able to find the Singer Junior Miss version easily. This model below is quite similar, though there are some differences right off the bat that I noticed, like the spool pin’s orientation.

1184.
1185.
The Sears Lockstitch Child’s Sewing Machine, model number 49 19741 sewing machine is very lightweight and plastic-y. The foot pedal is pretty tiny, but this is for kids, so that’s fine. Something inside my machine is bouncing around, which isn’t a good sign. But what is a good sign is that the machine is not jammed when moving the handwheel. Thank goodness.

1186.
1187.
1188.
1189.
It includes a Butterick pattern for a little girl’s dress inside the box. It looks like the previous owner took it out of the envelope but didn’t cut into the pieces.

1192.
1193.
I’m so glad that the manual is included. I’ll include some photos of the manual at the end of this article for your reference since I couldn’t find a digital copy of it available anywhere online.

1205.
1206.
1207.
What isn’t in the box is the hand crank that slides into the handwheel. Too bad!

1208.
1209.
1210.
1211.
There is a battery compartment on the bottom and the side features a DC input (adaptor sold separately). I’m ready with a set of D batteries.

1212.
1213.
1214.
1215.
I mentioned this machine is very light weight. To make sure it doesn’t just fly off your table while sewing, you’ll need to clamp it to your table with the metal hook.

1216.
1217.
1218.
1219.
Let’s start by turning on the on switch. The switch is on the foot pedal.

1220.
1221.
1222.
1223.
Winding the Bobbin

1224.
1225.
1226.
1227.
I’m going to be honest here: winding a bobbin on this machine is pretty difficult compared to any adult sewing machine I’ve ever used. I feel sorry for children who had to struggle with this.

1228.
1229.
1230.
1231.
Before we start, remember, that I don’t have the handcrank piece. The instructions say to use the handcrank when starting the bobbin. Keep in mind that if you use the handcrank that you will need to remove it anytime you are using the foot pedal.

1232.
1233.
1234.
1235.
Start by turning the handwheel until the needle is raised as high as it can go. Pop a spool of thread onto the spool pin, pull the thread to the metal thread guide, then pull the thread towards the handwheel. Bring about two inches of thread through the hole in the rim of one of the bobbins, from the inside out.

1236.
1237.
1238.
1239.
You can see there is a bobbin winder spring to the left of the handwheel. Gently press on it and place the bobbin on it, with the threaded end facing forward.

1240.
1241.
1242.
1243.
Hold the thread end and turn the handwheel clockwise a few times to get the bobbin started. Snip off the extra thread that is hanging from the bobbin rim.

1244.
1245.
1246.
1247.
Continue to wind the bobbin. You can switch to the foot pedal now instead of the handcrank. Fill until the bobbin is full. You’ll need to use your fingers so that it winds evenly because it naturally wants to just wind in one area instead of filling up the entire length of the bobbin..

1248.
1249.
1250.
1251.
Note: The machine came with a little piece of paper in the box, warning that you need to manually apply pressure to the bobbin so that the bobbin will actually catch against the mechanism. This seems like a huge design flaw, and the fact that it’s not included on the main instructions makes me think that this was a manufacturing issue and not the intended functionality. Hmmm, suspicious?!

1252.
1253.
1254.
1255.
Anyway, you can see in the video, it’s a struggle to get the bobbin to wind both evenly and with proper tension.

1256.
1257.
1258.
1259.
TROUBLESHOOTING – Behind the Scenes

1260.
1261.
1262.
1263.
Something to watch out for if you are having difficulty winding the bobbin: check to make sure that the bobbin isn’t damaged. One of the three bobbins included with the machine didn’t include a proper hole in the rim. The thread kept popping out of the groove, and it wasn’t until I compared my bobbins that I realized what the problem was.

1264.
1265.
1266.
1267.
How to Insert the Bobbin

1268.
1269.
1270.
1271.
Leave a tail hanging down from your bobbin, then slide the bobbin into the bobbin case. Hold your finger at the end of the bobbin to keep it from moving, and pull the thread into the slot of the bobbin case and up under the tension spring.

1272.
1273.
1274.
1275.
Holding the bobbin carefully, insert the bobbin into the bobbin case holder with the flat side forward. Hold the thread end and close the slide plate. Leave at least 2 inches hanging outside the slide plate.

1276.
1277.
1278.
1279.
How to Thread This Machine

1280.
1281.
1282.
1283.
Start by making sure the needle is as high as it will go.

1284.
1285.
1286.
1287.
Place a spool of thread on the spool pin. Pull the thread through the first thread guide. Pull the thread down and between the tension discs, then back up through the take up lever. Pull the thread down to the needle and thread it from front to back.

1288.
1289.
1290.
1291.
Bring up the bobbin thread by holding the tail of the top thread in your left hand. Turn the handwheel until the bobbin thread appears as a loop. Pull the loop with your fingers and pull both the top and bottom threads under the foot of the machine. You’re ready to sew!

1292.
1293.
1294.
1295.
You can sew with either the handcrank if you have it, or the foot pedal. Here is an example of what the stitches look like, keeping in mind that I haven’t done much tension adjustment yet. I’m not super worried about getting a perfect stitch, because honestly, I don’t plan to actually use this machine for sewing garments. I’ll just be keeping it as a novelty item on my shelf.

1296.
1297.
1298.
1299.
TROUBLESHOOTING:

1300.
1301.
1302.
1303.
If the tension is too tight, the bobbin will just pop out of the bobbin case and cause you big problems. If this happens, loosen the tension by turning the tension dial to the left.

1304.
1305.
1306.
1307.
Other Things to Note

1308.
1309.
1310.
1311.

1312.
According to the directions, this machine takes a Style No 2020 (15×1) needle, Size 14.

1313.
1314.
1315.
1316.
Since it’s battery operated, if you know you aren’t going to be using it for a while, be sure to remove the batteries to prevent corrosion.

1317.

1318.
1319.
1320.
1321.
Opinion Time

1322.
1323.
1324.
1325.
Now that I’ve shown you the basics of how to use this machine, I’m going to share some of my personal opinions about it.

1326.
1327.
1328.
1329.
First, what I love about it:

1330.
1331.
1332.
1333.

1334.
I’m a sucker for pink. This machine is adorable.

1335.
1336.
1337.
1338.
I love that it includes its own carrying case to keep it from getting dusty or damaged

1339.
1340.
1341.
1342.
The machine is lightweight and easy to take with you.

1343.
1344.
1345.
1346.
I love that it’s a real sewing machine with a real needle – some of the more modern kid sewing machines I’ve seen totally barricade the needle area, which limits what you can do. Most kids are capable of understanding that the needle will be sharp and to be careful.

1347.

1348.
1349.
1350.
1351.
But, there are things I dislike about it:

1352.
1353.
1354.
1355.

1356.
There is a fake handwheel on the side that you naturally want to try to turn, but this machine’s mechanism is totally on the front.

1357.
1358.
1359.
1360.
There doesn’t appear to be any way to adjust stitch length, limiting creativity.

1361.
1362.
1363.
1364.
As I mentioned during the bobbin winding segment, winding the bobbin is just awful and the results are not clean. I think if I was given this as a gift as a kid, the frustration would have resulted in me not wanting to sew with the machine at all.

1365.

1366.
1367.
1368.
1369.
These types of child sewing machines, although adorable because of their small size, have the downside of being made with cheaper materials and simplified mechanics. If I were to buy a machine for a child, I would go for one of these options instead:

1370.
1371.
1372.
1373.

1374.
Option 1: I would buy an all-metal vintage straight stitch machine that has stood the test of time. I think I Singer 99 or Singer 15 would be perfect and can usually be found cheaper than the cheapest plastic machines from a big box store.

1375.
1376.
1377.
1378.
Option 2: If I wanted to ensure that I got a warranty, I would opt for the most inexpensive starter machine from a big box store made for adults. I think the value of an adult sewing machine far outweighs the limited functionality of a child sewing machine.

1379.

1380.
1381.
1382.
1383.
I kind of went off on a rant there, didn’t I? I’m a bit passionate about allowing children the opportunity to learn the skills that they want to with equipment that won’t limit their experience. If they are responsible enough and are being supervised, I’m all for kids using the real deal.

1384.
1385.
1386.
1387.
Verdict: When my son is a little older, I know I will not be teaching him how to sew on this Sears sewing machine. However, the machine is cute, and I like having a piece of history now that Sears Canada is fully out of business.

1388.
1389.
1390.
1391.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the subject, so feel free to leave me a comment on this blog post or on my video comments. Also, do you or did you own this Sears sewing machine? If you know anything more about it please let me know!

1448.
I’ve previously written about the Singer Featherweight on this blog, explaining how I came across the two different models. However, I never touched upon how to use the machine, which is why today I’m sharing this video, my Singer 221 Featherweight Threading Guide, that teaches you how to thread the Featherweight.

1505.
1506.
1507.
Let’s start with the bobbin winding process. Make sure you’re using a bobbin meant for the 221 or 301.

1508.
1509.
1510.
1511.
How to Remove the Bobbin

1512.
1513.
1514.
1515.
Make sure that the take up lever is at its highest point, then access the bobbin case by folding up the bed of the machine. Pull out the bobbin case by its metal lever. Keep a hold of the lever while you pull it out to make sure that the bobbin stays in place. When you let go of the lever, the bobbin will easily fall out.

1516.
1517.
1518.
1519.
How to Wind the Bobbin

1520.
1521.
1522.
1523.
First you need to disengage the hand wheel so that the needle bar won’t go up and down: Hold the balance wheel with your left hand and use your right hand to turn the stop motion screw towards you.

1524.
1525.
1526.
1527.
Now when you press the foot pedal only the hand wheel will spin, not the stop motion screw and thus not the needle bar. Yay!

1528.
1529.
1530.
1531.
Put a spool of thread on the spool pin and draw the thread towards the thread guide. Continue to draw the thread down between the tension discs then up towards the bobbin winder. Grab one of your 221 bobbins and feed the thread through one of the holes on the left side of the bobbin from the middle.

1532.
1533.
1534.
1535.
Slide the bobbin onto the bobbin winder and pull down the winder so it’s pressed against the belt. Engage the foot pedal and once the thread has been wound a few times go ahead and snip off the tail.

1536.
1537.
1538.
1539.
Reengage the foot pedal and keep winding until it’s as full as you like. Make sure you don’t overfill it.

1540.
1541.
1542.
1543.
Put the bobbin winder back into the original position once it’s full, remove the bobbin, and snip the thread.

1544.
1545.
1546.
1547.
To put the machine back into standard sewing mode, lift the bobbin winder back into the up position and remove the bobbin, then hold the handwheel and turn the screw towards the back of the machine.

1548.
1549.
1550.
1551.
How to Insert the Bobbin

1552.
1553.
1554.
1555.
Arrange your bobbin so that the tail of thread is coming out from right to left, hanging down the left side. Hold the bobbin case so that the little groove is on the left hand side. Place the bobbin inside the bobbin case and lead the tail of thread through the groove and behind the tension spring, and finally between the slot at the end. Leave a tail.

1556.
1557.
1558.
1559.
Push the bobbin case into place, lining up the positioning finger into the notch at the top.

1560.
1561.
1562.

1571.
1572.
1573.
1574.

1575.
Place a spool of thread on the spool pin and lead the thread across to the thread guide.

1576.
1577.
1578.
1579.
Hold the thread taught and lead the thread down between the tension discs.

1580.
1581.
1582.
1583.
Pull the thread up under the take-up spring until it enters the retaining fork.

1584.
1585.
1586.
1587.
Then pass the thread up behind the thread guide.

1588.
1589.
1590.
1591.
Insert the thread from right to left through hole in the take up lever.

1592.
1593.
1594.
1595.
Pull the thread through the two guide at the left side, then thread the needle from right to left.

1596.
1597.
1598.
1599.
Leave a tail of about 3 inches.

1600.

1601.
1602.
1603.
1604.
To bring up the bobbin thread, hold the top thread with your left hand. Turn the balance wheel towards you so the needle can move down and back up again. Tug the top thread slightly and you’ll see the bobbin thread will come up a little. Pull the thread towards the back and place both ends of the thread to the back of the presser foot. You’re ready to sew!

1605.
1606.
1607.
1608.
To start sewing, place your material under the presser foot then lower the presser foot. Press the pedal to start stitching.

1609.
1610.
1611.
1612.
Stitch Adjustments

1613.
1614.
1615.
1616.
On the main body of the machine, you can see a lever that allows you to set the length of the stitch. The numbers refer to stitches per inch. To adjust the length, loose the thumb nut and move the lever to the desired stitch length. You can lock it into position by tightening the thumb nut. You can put the machine into reverse by flipping the lever up as far as possible. It will have the same stitch length in reverse.

1617.
1618.
1619.
1620.
I hope these instructions have helped you get your sewing machine up and running! Happy sewing!

1644.
Today I’ll be demonstrating the Singer Automatic Zigzagger vintage sewing machine attachment. Use this attachment in place of your regular presser foot to convert a straight-stitch-only sewing machine into a zigzagger. This particular zigzagger is a 1950s model for straight shank sewing machines. The manual included with the attachment advertises it is for the Class 15, 201, 221, and 1200 sewing machines, but I had no problem hooking it up to my Singer Class 66 sewing machine. You can zigzag stitch, you can blind stitch, and more with this handy attachment.

So handy! If you want the stability of the vintage straight stitch sewing machines and the versatility of a zig zag sewing machine, this is the foot for you!

1704.
Does your cubicle inspire you to finish your daily tasks? Mine wasn’t cutting it for a long time, bringing down my emotional state. Maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but anything that can be done to improve my workweek on a budget was worth a try! In March of 2019, I decided to decorate my cubicle at work to help brighten my mood and increase my productivity.

The video contains tips and tricks I used to transform my ugly cubicle into a much more fun one! Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, my office temporarily closed at the end of March 2020 and I wasn’t able to get back inside to film close up shots and take better photos. Since then, my department transitioned to be fully work-from-home so I was never able to return. I enjoyed this setup for a year and the wrapping paper held up very well during that time!

1758.
1759.
1760.
1761.
I purchased inexpensive wallpaper in two different prints for Dollarama that coordinated nicely. I think I was hunting for the perfect wallpaper for months, shopping at various stores. The tricky part was finding wrapping paper that didn’t scream BIRTHDAY. I wanted a neutral palette. Winners had a lot of great options but their per-roll price was more than I wanted to spend. When Dollarama got these prints in, I pounced!

1765.
How to Wallpaper Your Cubicle with Wrapping Paper

1766.
1767.
1768.
1769.
This method is compatible with soft fabric paneled cubicles. If you have a solid panel rather than a paneled cubical, you can probably swap all the pinning steps with ordinary cello tape.

1770.
1771.
1772.
1773.
First, I wrote down the measurements of all the panels I wanted to cover. Then added approximately 2cm / 1in to each measurement to tuck around the panels.

1774.
1775.
1776.

1778.
1779.
1780.
Roll out your wrapping paper and make sure that you consider what direction your print is. If you have a cat print, for example, you’d want to make sure your cat heads are facing the correct direction and not rotated.

1781.
1782.
1783.
1784.
I used sewing pins to attach the wallpaper. You could also just thumbtack it on, but the thumbtacks will be visible.

1785.
1786.
1787.
1788.
This is a reenactment because my office closed and I couldn’t return. But, I pinned the fabric within the edge of the panels, hidden as much as possible. For left and right sides, I pinned with the heads at the pin at the top, with the pin going straight down.

1848.
In this video I’ll show you how to thread the White Super Lock Model 534S Serger in this serger threading guide. This model is nearly identical to the White Super Lock Model 534 serger (note the S in the model name). I’ll show the difference in threading between the two machines. I’ll show how to thread the lower looper, how to thread the upper looper, and how to thread the serger needles. I’ll share my serger threading tips and tricks to make threading the lower looper easier.

1858.
I hope this guide has helped you not dread threading your serger. When I moved last year, I had to make the tough decision to downsize many machines in my collection. I had multiple sergers, so I made the decision to sell this one and keep my Singer 5-thread serger. This serger was tough and easy to use, so it was a hard decision. I hope I don’t regret this choice! So FYI, unfortunately, I won’t be making any follow up videos with this machine.

1866.
I strongly recommend you watch my video demonstration as it’s hard to explain without showing you, but I’ve included a transcription here with some of the talking points from the video in case you want to follow along in text format.

1867.
1868.
1869.
1870.
Before we begin, let’s open the machine using the lever on the front of the machine. You’ll see that there is a diagram right inside the machine that you can follow.

1871.
1872.
1873.
1874.
Place a cone of thread on each thread holder and lead each thread up to the corresponding thread guide. Lead the thread through the guides from back to front. Leave some thread dangling from each.

1893.
1894.
1895.
1896.
There is a certain threading order you need to follow:

1897.
1898.
1899.
1900.

1901.
FIRST – Thread #4, LOWER LOOPER

1902.
1903.
1904.
1905.
SECOND – Thread #3, UPPER LOOPER

1906.
1907.
1908.
1909.
NEXT – the needle threads, Thread #1 and Thread #2.

1910.

1911.
1912.
1913.
1914.
Let’s get the machine into the proper position for threading. Turn the handwheel towards you until the needle bar is in the highest position.

1915.
1916.
1917.
1918.
Make sure you only turn the handwheel towards you to avoid problems. Of all four threads, the lower looper, the first thread, is the hardest, so once you’ve completed this step, know that the hardest part is behind you. You’ve got this!

1919.
1920.
1921.
1922.
LOWER LOOPER THREADING

1923.
1924.
1925.
1926.
For the lower looper, we’ll be following the PURPLE TRIANGLE icons on the machine.

1927.
1928.
1929.
1930.

1931.
Bring the thread from the fourth thread guide down behind this metal guide

1932.
1933.
1934.
1935.
Bring the thread through the right hand side of the tension disc.

1936.
1937.
1938.
1939.
Bring the thread through the next three thread guides (reference the video).

1940.
1941.
1942.
1943.
This next part is the trickiest. There is another guide inside the machine. Look carefully for the purple triangle icon. It can be difficult to thread this loop since it’s hard to see, so what I like to do is just take my thread and pass it through to my hand on the other side without feeding it through the loop. Then hold the thread taut so it’s easier to clip the thread into the thread guide, kind of like flossing a tooth.

1944.
1945.
1946.
1947.
You may have to turn the handwheel towards you a little bit to see the lower looper.

1948.
1949.
1950.
1951.
If you have the Super Lock 534, in the manual, it shows that there should be a hole to thread through in the looper. If you have the Super Lock 534S, like me, you’ll have this hook:

1952.

1953.
1954.
1955.

1956.

Model 535S VS Model 534S

1957.
1958.
1959.

1960.
So if you have the hole like in the 534, you will want to carefully thread it through, but for 544S like me, I just make sure that I hook on the edge of the metal from the back to the front. You’ll see there is a channel on this piece, so with tweezers from the right side, lead the thread through the channel guide and thread the looper from front to back. Leave a dangling tail and lead the thread toward the back of the machine.

1961.

1962.
1963.

The best part? You can remove these labels easily without damaging the fabric on the bins.

2102.
I use a lot of cube storage for toy organization for my kids, but as a family, we were struggling to get the toys back into the proper bin. At the end of each day, the kids were just stashing the toys in whatever bin had room – regardless of what was supposed to be in each container. It wasn’t easy to know at a glance what was inside the bins since they all look the same from the outside. These cube storage units looked nice when closed, but when you opened the bins, you’d never know what you would find inside.

2103.
2104.
2105.
2106.
Transparent bins weren’t the solution to this problem, because I wanted the mess to be totally hidden. I also didn’t want to purchase a new storage system when I already had these items on hand. I didn’t want to label directly onto the fabric.

2111.
2112.
2113.
2114.
I came up with a solution: I created these labels that would fold over the handles of the fabric pull handles. They aren’t adhered to the bins directly, so the fabric won’t get damaged when you remover the labels later.

2115.
2116.
2117.
2118.
Since it’s not permanent, you’ll have the flexibility to be able to change up the labels as new toys are added or toys retired.

2119.
2120.
2121.
2122.
I designed this so the label would hang nicely but wouldn’t be permanently attached. My son wanted a superhero themed room, so I cut out Batman masks to feature on the left side. You could cut any image and glue it here, or if your child is young, you could print a photo of the items that should be inside the bin
