41.
According to their shop description, they feature designs with an “ornamental country style” inspired by cottages, country landscapes, primitive and folk art, as well as Americana and samplers from the colonial and Quaker eras, and American and European samplers.

 42.
As of this writing they have a little more than 30 designs, which definitely have an early America feel to them.

 43.
I love the Day to Night pattern, which features a little house and a big sky changing from day to night that looks like quilt blocks. There are actually several patterns that feature stars or snowflakes or other designs evocative of quilt blocks or knitting colorwork designs, which just goes to show that all crafts are connected.

 44.
There are historical samplers as well as designs made with more modern quotes (like “The time is always right to do what is right” from Martin Luther King, Jr.). And of course the one pictured, called Bookhouse, which features a quote from Neil Gaiman: “I lived in books more than I lived anywhere else.”

 45.
The design features two trees (the leaves are meant to evoke books) and a tall house with a light left on in a window for the reader in the house (which looks a little bit like a TARDIS, though I don’t know if that’s intentional). The design was inspired by classic book covers. It measures 93 by 81 stitches, or 5.8 by 5.1 inches (14.7 by 12.9 cm) when worked on 16 count fabric and uses only full stitches and some back stitching on the book spines.

 46.
This would be a great one for a library or to put on a bookshelf.

 47.
You can check out all the designs with a classic feel even though they might have modern content at the Stone Street Stitchworks Etsy shop.

Really just a bit of fabric, some embroidery floss and a needle are all that you need to try it out.

 87.
But like any craft, there are accessories and special tools that might not be essential, but they do make the work a little easier. And sometimes they can even make it a little more fun, too.

 88.
Take needle minders, for example.

 89.
I didn’t know these existed until a few years ago. I always just stabbed my needle through a couple of holes in the cross stitch fabric (ideally outside of the stitching area because that can stretch out the holes) when I wasn’t using it so I wouldn’t lose it.

 90.
But clever stitchers figured out a way to hold their needle close without damaging their fabric, and that’s a needle minder.

 91.
It’s basically a couple of magnets that you place your fabric between; then the top magnet can hold the needle while you’re not using it. You can also attach it to your paper pattern if you like instead.

 92.
Of course just using plain magnets for this is possible, but it’s not very exciting, so there are all sorts of designs of needle minders that you can buy (which we’ll get to in a minute). I’ve got an idea for making my own which I will share as soon as I try it out.

 93.
In the meantime, check out this post from Catkin and Kindle that goes into a lot more detail about how needle minders are made and different ways you can use them, as well as potential pitfalls of using them.

 94.
As for where to buy your own, I’ll probably do a whole post on that soon, too, but here are a couple of fun options from Etsy:

 95.

 96.
Caffeinated Cat Crafts has a wide variety of needle minders ranging from gnomes to a steampunk octopus, bees and ouija planchettes.

 97.
Adventure Needlework has a decided witchy/cat vibe, including needle minders of both a cat and a mushroom holding a knife.

 98.
Needles Notions and More focuses on seasonal designs including a bunny holding a carrot, candy corn and a snowman, but I really had to share this one because they have a Highland Cow needle minder!

It makes me want to start crafting projects with more of a summery feel to them, which is probably why I was recently drawn to look up some cactus cross stitch patterns.

 135.
Witch Stitch has an adorable little cactus in a pot pattern that wouldn’t be too hard for a beginner. It uses seven colors and has a little backstitch for the spikes.

 136.
This set of little cacti from Ugly Duckling House are cute all together on a hoop, but they’d also be cute stitched individually on different projects. Napkins for summer picnics, anyone? The full project is about 7.1 by 6.4 inches (18.8 by 16.3 cm) and 14 count fabric, and it uses 25 colors. There’s a little back stitching to make the spikes on a couple of the cacti, but you can leave them off if you don’t want to do it. Note: this pattern is no longer free but can be accessed on their membership site.

 137.
Another little sampler of mini cactus patterns is available from Nikki Pattern on Etsy. This design has four little cactus patterns in pots with geometrical designs on them. The set measures 71 by 108 stitches, which is 5.07 by 7.71 inches or 12.88 by 19.59 cm on 14 count fabric, and uses 14 colors.

 138.
Looking for something a little more realistic? Check out this set of four cactus in pots from Goffin Design (which I just profiled the other day). This one uses 20 colors and measures 207 by 108 stitches, which comes out to 4.79 by 7.71 inches or 37.56 by 19.59 cm on 14 count fabric.

 139.
Or if you really want a challenge, try this cactus collection from Patrones a Puntadas. This stunning realistic cactus cross stitch pattern uses a whopping 82 colors in 217 by 276 stitches. This would be a true labor of love for a dedicated stitcher who loves cacti, but how pretty it would be on your wall!

 180.
Even though their patterns cover a wide range of seasons, holidays and motifs, there’s just something about the designs from Etsy seller Goffin Design that evokes spring to me.

 181.
The colors are bright, fresh and cheerful, whether they’re used to illustrate four seasons of windows, Santa at his workshop or a pair of potted citrus trees.

 182.
A great many of the designs on offer have to do with the seasons, and quite a few of them are sets of four patterns that are related, such as the above-mentioned windows, or there are seasonal mice, hearts with the season’s word in the middle each stitched in a different color, and all sorts of seasonal birds, birdhouses, landscapes, cats…I could go on and on. The point is, if you like patterns that evoke the seasons, or a set of patterns that can keep you stitching on a theme all year long, you’re going to want to check those out.

 183.
The photo above is the vintage yard cross stitch pattern, featuring a teal doorway and a pink bicycle. Of course you could change the colors if you want but I really like this combination. And, again, with all the flowers and bright colors I think you can see where I’m getting the idea that their patterns feel like spring.

 184.
This particular pattern is 109 by 101 stitches and measures 7.79 by 7.21 inches, or 19.78 by 18.32 cm, when stitches on 14 count fabric. It uses 24 colors and has whole stitches and back stitching.

 185.
They also have a lot of flowers and cacti featured in patterns. There are several patterns for cross stitched orchids, for example, and botanically correct fruit shown on the plant and in cross section, including pear, peach, apple, orange, strawberry, pomegranate, cherry and apricot. These would be so lovely in a kitchen or dining room!

 186.
I can only scratch the surface in these reviews, but if I’ve piqued your interest, go check them out on Etsy at Goffin Design.

You can make your first cross stitch patterns with a single color of thread, using a single kind of stitch, with fabric that’s easy to find, with or without a hoop. The learning curve is pretty small, and you’re only out a few dollars and a little bit of time to learn the basics and see if you like it.

 223.
But if you’re new to cross stitch or thinking about starting cross stitch as a new craft in your life, you might have some questions that patterns just don’t answer, either because they assume you know these things or the answer isn’t long enough to fill out a blog post.

 224.
Hannah Hand Makes has collected 20 of these sorts of questions into an FAQ about cross stitch that would be handy for you to read.

 225.
It covers everything from the difference between Aida and evenweave to what size needle you should use for cross stitch. You’ll find information on where to buy kits and supplies, the difference between counted cross stitch, stamped cross stitch and embroidery, how to cross stitch a photo, cross stitching on clothes and more.

 226.
(She’s even got an opinion on how much you should care about how messy the back of your work is. Spoiler: not much. I totally agree! It’s not worth it to try to make the back pretty unless its going to be visible in the finished product.)

 227.
Even if you’re pretty comfortable with cross stitch it’s worth it to skim through these FAQs, because you might just learn something or have your opinion about a cross stitch topic confirmed.

 228.
Check out the list at Hannah Hand Makes.

 265.
Adding grids to your cross stitch fabric is a quick and easy way to help yourself when you’re working on a big project. Your chart will have grids marking off every 10 stitches and every 10 rows, so having those same markings on your fabric can only make it easier for you to follow along.

 266.
There are a few main ways to do this, which include marking the grid with thread (either embroidery floss, sewing thread, thread marketed for this purpose, or even fishing line!) or using fabric marking tools to draw the grid. Using a ruler when you do this helps a lot. Mine are still not that straight.

 267.
You can also buy cross stitch fabric that’s already marked, which of course makes it a lot easier, but it’s kind of expensive.

 268.
When marking your fabric it helps to know where the center of your fabric is, as well as where the center of the chart is relative to the grid marks so you can line them up.

 269.
This makes it a lot easier to orient yourself in the chart, and if you have a lot of one color all together it can make it easier to count stitches. Say you had 23 stitches in a row of the same color; stitching across two squares plus three stitches is a lot easier to keep track of than having to manually count them as you go.

Every year I want to plant more flowers in the hope of drawing more butterflies to my yard. If it’s not yet time for butterflies where you live, you can always stitch some with these butterfly cross stitch patterns.

 306.
The World in Stitches has a pretty retro butterfly pattern complete with little flower motifs (which of course you could leave off if you just want to have the butterfly buy itself). The full design by Colleen Carrington measures 73 by 76 stitches, which is 5.21 by 5.43 inches or 31.24 by 13.79 cm on 14 count fabric. It uses 11 colors.

 307.
Purple Leaf Designs has a pretty purple (of course!) butterfly pattern that you can get for free when you sign up for emails. If you’re not as big a fan of purple, sub in shades of whatever color you like.

 308.
Stitched Modern has a cool collection of butterflies (and maybe some moths, too?) designed by Dear Sukie, which would be fun to stitch all together as shown, or you can work up individual butterflies in their own hoops. If you stitch it all together it measures 147 by 121 stitches, or 10.5 by 8.6 inches (26.6 by 21.8 cm) on 14 count fabric.

 309.
Stitch up a full specimen board of butterflies with this big design full of tiny butterflies from Tiny Cross Stitch Co on Etsy. In this 235 stitch square project you’ll find 100 little butterflies. On 16 count fabric it comes out to 13 inches/33cm square. Or take individual butterflies and stitch them on napkins, use them as a border for another project, add to cards or bookmarks…so many ways to use them!

 310.
Speaking of using butterflies as a border, the butterflies on this design from Cross with Me only take up about half of the fabric needed to fill a hoop, so you could easily add in some text or a flower or just leave the white space. I think this would look great on a sky blue fabric as well. The design uses 12 colors and measures 115 by 151 stitches.

 311.
These folk art butterflies don’t exactly look natural, but they sure are pretty and would be great as decor in a room with a boho feel. The design is from Stitchrovia and measures 178 by 180 stitches. On 14 count fabric it comes out to around 13 by 13 inches, or 33 cm.

It turns out that I shares a summer sampler of theirs a couple of years ago, but I remembered the bright and cheerful designs, which once again drew me into their world.

 351.
This UK based designer does a lot of colorful sampler patterns, with a focus on seasons and holidays. In fact, speaking of that summer design, you can actually purchase a set of all four seasons, which have coordinating designs so they could be displayed together, or change out the season when appropriate throughout the year. There’s also a more rustic design that has all four seasons in one piece if you prefer that look.

 352.
Of course it’s not all seasons and holidays at Little Dove Samplers, though that is a lot of it. Another pattern that caught my eye is The Sewing Room, shown above. This colorful design features buttons, threads, a quilt top, a sewing machine and a black cat lounging on a pile of fabric. There’s even a basket of yarn under the chair. It’s like she was peeking in my craft room when she designed this (I knit, sew and have a black cat who loves to hang out under the sewing table).

 353.
The design is 114 by 133 stitches, or 8 by 9.5 inches (20.3 by 24.1 cm) on 14-count fabric. I am thinking hard about making this one for my crafty space!

 354.
Some of the patterns have kitted options like this pretty butterfly sampler. (I’m not seeing one for the sewing room pattern.)

 355.
They also have a couple of granny square crochet afghan patterns if you like doing other crafts, too.

 356.
Check out all the designs they have to offer at Little Dove Samplers on Etsy.

 357.
If you have a shop, or have a shop you love that you’d like to see featured here, let me know about it by clicking on the “suggest a DIY” link at the top of the page.

 394.
The 20 projects in this book include pro-environment sayings and projects featuring animals and nature scenes. Each pattern includes an overview of the stitch count, how many threads were used to stitch the project, finished size and a shopping list. The charts are spread out on two to four pages, so they are pretty good sized for easy reading (only the smallest designs are shown on just one page).

 395.
One of my favorites is one illustrating the quote “We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” This project is 130 by 190 stitches, and uses 27 colors to illustrate a bear, eagles, whales, jellyfish, mountains and more.

 396.
Another cute one is “the world is full of magic,” which includes Arctic animals like polar bears, seals and a narwhal. It is 131 by 197 stitches and uses 25 colors.

 397.
There are a couple of round projects that are somewhat smaller (100 by 100 or 101 stitches) that fit in a round hoop for display, such as one with trees and the saying “take care of the earth and she will take care of you.” You’ll also find a set of four little hoops around the 65 by 65 stitch range that would be perfect for hanging in your recycling area, with sentiments like “Earth Day every day” and “Less plastic is fantastic.”

 398.
There’s also a stunning and colorful four seasons sample that includes animals and natural scenes. It’s 200 by 130 stitches and uses 23 colors, and would be so fun for a kid’s library or homeschooling space.

 399.
The book includes an overview of supplies to help you get started at the front of the book, and a techniques section at the back that includes tips on preparing fabric, how to cross stitch and back stitch, following charts and more helpful info. There’s also a chart at the back listing the DMC and Anchor numbers for all the threads used in the book if you want to substitute.

 400.
Cross Stitch for the Earth is a great book for nature lovers and environmentalists who want to illustrate quotes about nature in beautiful stitches.

 401.
About the book: 112 pages, paperback, 20 patterns. Published 2021 by David & Charles. Suggested retail price $24.99.

 435.

Anzac Day is marked each year on April 25 as a reminder of the battle of Gallipoli, a conflict against the Ottoman Turks in 1915 that resulted in the deaths of more than 8,000 Australian soldiers. Anzac is a nickname for the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps, and the day serves as a memorial for all Australians killed in military operations (similar to Memorial Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world).

 436.
As is traditional in some other countries, poppies are used as a symbol of remembrance, and there are many lovely poppy cross stitch patterns, whether specific to Anzac Day or otherwise, that would be meaningful to stitch for this day.

 437.
This Anzac Day cross stitch pattern from String Theory by McG features poppies, a kangaroo and a kiwi.

 438.
Stitch the Anzac Ode with a bugle player in a field of poppies with this design from Paddock Lane Designs. It measures 251 by 350 stitches, which comes out to 15.7 by 21.4 inches/39.8 by 54.4 cm on 16 count fabric.

 439.
More generally, PDFSTGStitchUK has a Lest we Forget design with a soldier in front of a cross with poppies. It measures 140 by 138 stitches so it’s almost 10 inches/25.5 cm square when stitched on 14 count fabric.

 440.
There’s also a Lest we Forget bookmark with a similar design from Purple Pansy XS. It comes out to 1.7 by 7 inches/4.3 by 17.8 cm on 16 count fabric. It uses full and three-quarter stitches as well as backstitching details.

 441.
This pretty poppy would be another good one to stitch for Anzac Day or Remembrance Day. It’s from Honeyeater Crafts and measures 119 by 220 stitches and uses 18 colors. Using 14 count fabric it comes out to 8.5 by 15.7 inches, or 21.6 by 39.9 cm.

 442.
If you’re looking for more poppies, I’ve collected some poppy cross stitch patterns before, and this one was shared by itself but it’s still really pretty, with a bit of a watercolor feel, and worth sharing again.
