44.
Strands is a brand new daily puzzle from the New York Times. A trickier take on the classic word search, you’ll need a keen eye to solve this puzzle.

 45.
Like Wordle, Connections, and the Mini Crossword, Strands can be a bit difficult to solve some days. There’s no shame in needing a little help from time to time. If you’re stuck and need to know the answers to today’s Strands puzzle, check out the solved puzzle below.

 46.
How to play Strands

 47.
You start every Strands puzzle with the goal of finding the “theme words” hidden in the grid of letters. Manipulate letters by dragging or tapping to craft words; double-tap the final letter to confirm. If you find the correct word, the letters will be highlighted blue and will no longer be selectable.

 48.
If you find a word that isn’t a theme word, it still helps! For every three non-theme words you find that are at least four letters long, you’ll get a hint — the letters of one of the theme words will be revealed and you’ll just have to unscramble it.

 49.
Every single letter on the grid is used to spell out the theme words and there is no overlap. Every letter will be used once, and only once.

 50.
Each puzzle contains one “spangram,” a special theme word (or words) that describe the puzzle’s theme and touches two opposite sides of the board. When you find the spangram, it will be highlighted yellow.

 51.
The goal should be to complete the puzzle quickly without using too many hints.

 52.
Today’s Strand answers

 53.
We’ll start by giving you the spangram, which might help you figure out the theme and solve the rest of the puzzle on your own:

 54.
If you still need answers, here are the rest of the theme words in the puzzle:

He also apologised for the troubles caused to the entire health food industry and the medical profession, adding that the company was working to prevent further damage and improve crisis management.

 173.
The company’s products have been recalled — as have dozens of other items that contain benikoji, including miso paste, crackers and a vinegar dressing. Japan’s health ministry put up a list on its official site of all the recalled products, including some that use benikoji for food colouring.

 174.

 175.
The ministry warned the deaths could keep growing. The supplements could be bought at drug stores without a prescription from a doctor, and some may have been purchased or exported before the recall, including by tourists who may not be aware of the health risks.

 377.

 378.
J.K. Khalil, General Manager for Mastercard’s MENA East cluster, which spans the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Pakistan, said the company recently successfully forayed into the Chinese market. This created even greater confidence in the global technology brand, known for its out-of-the-box initiatives in the payments industry and beyond.

 379.

 380.
“We also finalised our platform in China to become the first global company that will launch its cards in the world’s second-largest economy,” Khalil told BTR during an interview.

 381.

 382.
Exceeding Targets

 383.

 384.
Khalil, an industry veteran with 20 years of experience in tech, banking, consulting and the payments industry, said Mastercard is committed to building an innovative, inclusive and sustainable future. The technology giant provides a range of options to its cardholders to perform their transactions, including e-commerce payments, cross-border remittances, QR and Tap on Phone solutions.

 385.

 386.
Khalil noted that Mastercard’s goal is to bring one billion unbanked and underserved individuals and 50 million micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) worldwide into the digital economy by 2025.

 387.

 388.
“An integral part of this objective is empowering 25 million women entrepreneurs with the tools and resources needed to grow their businesses. Remarkably, we already achieved this global milestone ahead of schedule in June 2023,” he said.

 389.

 390.
2023 – A historic year

 391.

 392.
Khalil described 2023 as a historic year for the company, marked by tremendous growth as well as expansion into new territories with its state-of-the-art solutions.

 393.

 394.
“2023 was a fantastic year for us, as we registered amazing growth in our business in this region. We also finalised our platform in China to become the first global company that will launch its cards in the world’s second-largest economy,” he said.

 395.

 396.
“We are not just an international player, but we have a lot of assets in our arsenal. We’re not scared to go the extra mile in finding new scale opportunities,” he added.

 397.

 398.
“We still have a lot of innovative ideas and will carry on our financial inclusion journey. Looking ahead to 2024, 2025 and beyond, the outlook is extremely positive, as we are energised, and our partners are very happy to continue working with us to innovate for the future. The sky really is the limit.”

 399.

 400.
Innovation-LED Partnerships

 401.

 402.
“Partnership is the name of the game. Working closely with key ecosystem players allows us to amplify each other’s innovation capabilities to keep up with the evolving needs of their customers,” said Khalil.

 403.

 404.
A case in point is the company’s latest long-term strategic collaboration with First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), aimed at leveraging advanced technologies, including AI, to develop unique and disruptive products, services and solutions as one unified team.

 405.

 406.
The groundbreaking partnership unlocks new ways of working that will enable closer day-to-day collaboration and a shared focus on long-term growth.

 407.

 408.
Key Growth Markets

 409.

 410.
Khalil highlighted key growth markets in the MENA and Pakistan region, and said Mastercard has been involved in many large-scale collaborations to drive accelerated growth and innovation in the UAE and other countries.

 411.

 412.
He observed strong progress in terms of digital transformation in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Pakistan, and pointed out an interesting factor Mastercard has identified.

 413.

 414.
“We’ve noticed that different markets grow with different technologies and different use cases. For instance, in Pakistan, there’s a huge growth in cybersecurity. Because the economy is transforming so quickly into the digital space, we see a lot of uptake of cybersecurity assets and solutions,” he said.

 415.

 416.
But there’s also growth in cross-border payments on the SME side and high acceptance among the masses, he said, adding that significant growth is being recorded in the number of merchants accepting digital payments across the country.

 417.

 418.
MENA Takes The LEAD

 419.

 420.
In the UAE (and Saudi Arabia), Khalil has seen considerable growth in e-commerce and cross-border payments.

 421.

 422.
“Four or five years ago, a lot of the cross-border payments out of the UAE were related to travel corridors, but today, they are a mix of travel, e-commerce, services and experience-related spends,” he said.

 423.

 424.
In Egypt, he has observed rapid growth in the mobile payment segment.

 425.

 426.
“We have a mobile payment gateway platform in the country that is growing in leaps and bounds, and we see it connect more people to the digital economy going forward,” he added.

 427.

 428.
Fast-Tracking Tech Adoption

 429.

 430.
Khalil noted that the rest of the region is growing on the domestic side of the equation.

 431.

 432.
“You’ll see a lot of growth in domestic payments in markets like Qatar and Kuwait. We still believe that there’s an upside for them to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said. “So, it’s been a mixed bag – in different markets, different kinds of use cases and technologies are solving for different problems in people’s lives.”

 433.

 434.
“I think we’re blessed in this region to be seeing so many innovations and changes in the digital payment space. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and now Egypt, Pakistan and many other countries are defining the new face of digital payments, and we’re taking the lead in embracing new technologies,” he added.

 435.

 436.
Khalil said Mastercard has been working with its partners, merchants and regulators to explore new types of digital payments, such as contactless, invisible and seamless payments, as well as cybersecurity to protect customers’ interest.

 437.

 438.
“We’ve also got new payment options, including ‘buy now pay later’ (BNPL), and are keeping an eye on alternative payments and cross-border payments, which have registered huge growth in recent years,” he added.

 439.

 440.
SMES In The Spotlight

 441.

 442.
Referring to the vision of Mastercard’s CEO, Khalil outlined target areas for the global technology company in the payment industry in the coming years. “We’re looking very closely at the small and medium enterprise (SME) and business-to-business (B2B) segments, which see a lot of positive disruptions that will help accelerate growth in the commercial payment space,” he said.

 443.

 444.
He added that SMEs are the lifeblood of communities and economies in most countries, and highlighted Mastercard’s partnerships in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Pakistan that support small businesses.

 445.

 446.
“We think it’s extremely important to empower SMEs. When you give them better access to technologies, products and financial services, you improve the lives of not just the SME owners but also everyone that benefits around them,” he said.

 447.

 448.
A Primary Technology Provider

 449.

 450.
Khalil said Mastercard is well-equipped to cope with technology challenges while operating in key growth markets. The company provides relevant and targeted solutions because of its innovative approach and investment in the latest technologies, including fintech, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity and data analytics.

 451.

 452.
Mastercard offers different kinds of technologies and facilitates different kinds of payments – physical, online, e-commerce, digital, contactless and cross-border remittance.

 453.

 454.
“Mastercard has solutions that are working today and helping power these new flows and new use cases. And because of that, we were able to become the primary technology partner for many banks and other ecosystem players, but also merchants, who appreciate our one-stop-shop approach,” he said. “In addition, we play a big role in helping de-risk our partners and participants in the digital economy by providing them with a comprehensive portfolio of cybersecurity services, many of which have been built in within their organisations.”

 455.

 456.

 457.
Keeping Pace With Tech Trends

 458.

 459.
Khalil believes technology and innovation are essential to ensure sustained success as businesses and financial institutions around the world are confronted with new and unprecedented challenges.

 460.

 461.
“With investment in innovative ideas, we are able to empower our clients and partners with the tools to meet their targets and accomplish their goals. And technology plays an important role in developing an innovative range of solutions for the payment industry, cybersecurity and digital economy,” he said.

 462.

 463.
The Power Of Fintech

 464.

 465.
The Mastercard executive also shed light on the latest fintech trends that have revolutionised the financial sector in recent years.

 466.

 467.
“It is good to see that investor sentiment is supporting the growing fintech sector that shifts focus from business-to-consumer (B2C) to B2B as it helps digitise e-commerce and provide new ways to distribute financial products and services to various players,” he said. “There’s a plethora of new trends, and they’re all positive. And we’re really happy with the way that participants as well as regulators are coming together to usher in this new era of digital payments and digital commerce.”

 468.

 469.
Future Of Cryptocurrency

 470.

 471.
Khalil believes cryptocurrency will take time to establish itself as a “trustworthy tool to exchange value”.

 472.

 473.
“Crypto is not going to change the world tomorrow. It’s just going to be another technology, another way to exchange value. It still is intrinsically quite volatile, as you probably see from the markets today,” he said. “At Mastercard, we are helping make crypto accessible and secure for consumers, businesses and governments. Our Crypto Card Program, as an example, enables simple and real-time use of digital currency for everyday transactions.”

 474.

 475.
Blockchain As A Catalyst

 476.

 477.
Khalil termed blockchain an interesting technology and catalyst for e-commerce growth across the world.

 478.

 479.
“Blockchain is an enabling technology that we have invested quite a bit in, as we have more than 100 patents in this space globally. It means that we had intentionally sought to explore this technology and understand how it can catalyse growth for the e-commerce sector and other industries,” he said.

 480.

 481.
The Potential of AI

 482.

 483.
In terms of AI and its usage in the payment industry and cybersecurity, Khalil noted that Mastercard leverages the technology to increase efficiency, productivity, transparency and customer happiness.

 484.

 485.
“We’ve been investing in developing AI for the last decade and a half. We are keen to use the technology to revolutionalise customer experience and enhance cybersecurity, in addition to making our HR, finance and legal departments more efficient and transparent,” he said.

 486.

 487.
“Banks are still experimenting with AI internally. They are building generative AI capabilities, testing the technology and learning it on basic processes, as they don’t want to expose their customers to fraud,” he added.

 488.

 489.
Khalil praised the UAE government for its ambitious approach to AI, and said Mastercard is ready to accelerate AI adoption in the region through its Global Center for Advanced AI and Cyber Technology in Dubai.

 490.

 491.
“We realised that the government accords top priority to the technology, as evidenced by its appointment of a dedicated minister for AI. That’s why we decided to establish one of only a handful of Global Centers for Advanced AI and Cyber Technology in the UAE, with the other Centers located in the US, Canada and India,” he said.

 492.

 493.

 494.
Mobile Payments Driving Inclusion

 495.

 496.
Khalil noted that mobile payments are gaining ground in Africa and Pakistan, and Mastercard collaborates with key telecom players in the region to capitalise on business opportunities in this growing segment.

 497.

 498.
“Telcos are incrementally becoming very important constituents in our financial ecosystem. I think telecommunication companies are also going through this kind of transformation where they’ve been talking about mobile financial services. Now we’re seeing more adoption and value realisation happening in the market,” he said.

 499.

 500.
“We have a partnership with MTN Group in Africa to connect millions of people and small businesses across the continent to digital tools to transact through secure mobile payments, expanding access to the benefits of the digital economy,” he added.

 501.

 502.
Africa is home to over 1.3 billion people, and only about 43 per cent are banked, with over 90 per cent of all transactions made in cash. And of the total population, only 45 per cent have mobile money accounts, according to the latest research.

 503.

 504.
“In Egypt, we already have been operating a mobile payment gateway, which connects all the telcos and helps people to transfer money instantly,” said Khalil.

 505.

 506.
In collaboration with the Central Bank of Egypt and the Egyptian Banks Company – the advanced payments network and domestic operator in the North African country – Mastercard supported the implementation of card tokenisation regulations by providing infrastructure to issuing banks across the country. The platform is expected to be launched this year.

 507.

 508.
Building A Sustainable Future

 509.

 510.
Khalil noted that Mastercard supports all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is among the leading businesses pushing for a more environmentally sustainable future.

 511.

 512.
The technology giant is committed to driving its operations toward net-zero emissions by 2040 and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon and regenerative economy across the board. The company has united global efforts to address climate change through the Priceless Planet Coalition, which seeks to restore 100 million trees by 2025.

 513.

 514.
“Mastercard supports the UAE’s drive to restore and expand mangrove forests and other coastal ecosystems with the aim of planting 100 million mangroves by 2030. We work to raise awareness about the important role mangroves play in preserving our climate,” said Khalil.

 515.

 516.
“In collaboration with Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB), we also introduced the region’s first Mastercard Carbon Calculator to support the sustainability ambitions of businesses by providing data on the estimated carbon footprint of their corporate expenditure using ADCB corporate cards,” he added.

 517.

 518.
The innovative tool assesses the number of emissions generated by each purchase using a weighted calculation powered by the independently verified Doconomy Åland Index, encouraging environmentally conscious consumer behaviour.

 519.

 520.
“This move aligns with the UAE’s ambition towards net-zero emissions by 2050 as well as global sustainability goals. We also backed the country’s initiatives to address global environmental challenges, announced at the landmark COP28 conference,” he said.

 521.

 522.
Khalil explained that as part of its holistic environmental, social and governance (ESG) approach, Mastercard supports diversity to provide equal opportunities at all levels of the company and harness a wider range of skills and experience for greater innovation and impact. Achieving the company’s ESG goals is also factored into bonus calculations for all employees. “Our diversity ratios significantly exceed regional benchmarks. Providing an optimal work environment to our employees and taking care of their wellbeing is high on our agenda,” Khalil concluded.

 548.
Oscar best picture winner ‘Oppenheimer’ was finally released on Friday in Japan, where its subject — the man who masterminded the creation of the atomic bomb — is a highly sensitive and emotional topic.

 549.

 550.
The US blockbuster hit screens in the United States and many other countries in July at the same time as ‘Barbie’, inspiring a viral phenomenon dubbed ‘Barbenheimer’ by moviegoers.

 551.

553.

 554.
But while ‘Barbie’ was released in Japan in August, ‘Oppenheimer’ was conspicuously absent from cinemas for months.

 555.

 556.
No official explanation was offered at the time, fuelling speculation the film was too controversial to be shown in Japan – the only country to have ever suffered a wartime nuclear attack.

 561.

 562.
Around 140,000 people died in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki when the United States dropped atomic bombs on the cities in August 1945, days before the end of World War II.

 563.

 564.
At a large cinema in central Tokyo where ‘Oppenheimer’ was showing on Friday, there was none of the prominent promotional material that might be expected for a global megahit.

 565.

 566.
Instead only one small poster advertised the film, which was shot on a $100 million budget and collected nearly $1 billion at box offices worldwide.

 567.

 568.
“It is a long, three-hour movie, but I watched it attentively, because it was so powerful,” audience member Masayuki Hayashi, 51, told AFP after the film.

 569.

 570.
Japanese distributors may have chosen to avoid a summer release close to the bombings’ anniversary, said 65-year-old Tatsuhisa Yue.

 571.

 572.
But “it would have been unthinkable if a movie which describes how the weapon was developed didn’t show here”, he said.

 573.

 574.
“The movie arrived late, but I think it was good that it finally opened in Japan.”

 575.

 576.
The film tells the story of US physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who oversaw the bomb’s invention.

 577.

 578.
It drew rave reviews and was the most decorated title at this month’s Oscars, scooping seven awards including best director for Christopher Nolan and best actor for star Cillian Murphy.

 579.

 580.
But in Hiroshima, the city devastated by the first nuclear bomb, the biopic’s Academy Awards success met a mixed reaction.

 581.

 582.
Kyoko Heya, president of the city’s international film festival, told AFP after the awards ceremony that she had found Nolan’s movie “very America-centric”.

 583.

 584.
“Is this really a movie that people in Hiroshima can bear to watch?” she asked.

 585.

 586.
Today the city is a thriving metropolis of 1.2 million people, but the ruins of a domed building still stand as a stark reminder of the horrors of the attack, along with a museum and other sombre memorials.

 587.

 588.
Heya said that after much reflection, “I now want many people to watch the movie.”

 589.

 590.
“I’d be happy to see Hiroshima, Nagasaki and atomic weapons become the subject of discussions thanks to this movie,” she said.

 591.

 592.
Last year, viral ‘Barbenheimer’ memes sparked anger online in Japan, where media reports have highlighted critics who say the film does not show the harm caused by the bombs.

 593.

 594.
“There could have been much more description and depiction of the horror of atomic weapons,” bomb survivor and former Hiroshima mayor Takashi Hiraoka, 96, said at a special screening in the city earlier this month.

 595.

 596.
‘Oppenheimer’ was also shown at a preview event in Nagasaki, where survivor Masao Tomonaga, 80, said he had been impressed by the movie.

 597.

 598.
“I had thought the film’s lack of… images of atomic bomb survivors was a weakness,” said Tomonaga, who was two when the second bomb was dropped and later became a professor studying leukaemia caused by the attacks.

 599.

 600.
“But in fact, Oppenheimer’s lines in dozens of scenes showed his shock at the reality of the atomic bombing. That was enough for me.”

 601.

 640.
“There’s no one better in India to have behind the stumps than MS Dhoni. The way he understands the game and the angles of the game is second to none. So look, he was a tremendous person to play with. I really enjoyed his company on and off the field,” Smith said.

 685.
Microsoft Office is one of the most popular programs on Windows 11, as well as macOS. Office is even available on iPhones, Android devices, and Chromebooks.

 686.
So, how do you purchase Microsoft Office? It’s pretty easy, but there’s something to understand. There’s two types of Microsoft Office out there. You can subscribe to Microsoft Office with Microsoft 365 and then download the app from your respective app store on your device to use it on up to five devices.

 687.
You also can pay for standard Microsoft Office, currently Office 2021, without worrying about a subscription, and use it on a single PC or Mac. We’ll cover all the methods here for you to make sure you choose the best option for yourself.

 688.

 689.

 690.
How to buy Microsoft Office on Windows through the Microsoft Store

 691.
If you’re on a Windows PC, the easiest way to buy Microsoft Office is through the Microsoft Store. Just launch the store, search for Microsoft 365 in the search bar, and follow the steps below.

 692.
Note you can purchase two subscriptions. There’s Microsoft 365 Personal, which is for individuals and costs $70 a year or $7 a month. There’s also Microsoft 365 Family, which costs $100 a year or $10 a month and can be shared with up to six people.

 693.
We cover Office 2021 in a later section, should you not want to subscribe.

 694.
Step 1: Launch the Microsoft Store. Look for the app in your Start Menu or Taskbar.

 695.
Step 2: Enter Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family into the search bar.

 696.

 697.
698.

 699.
Step 3: In the resulting page, click on the button with the price. Your credit or debit card tied to your Microsoft Account will be charged.

 700.

 701.
702.

 703.
Step 4: Once that’s complete, you can choose the Install button and find the Microsoft Office apps listed in the Start Menu. The apps will download one by one.

 704.

 705.
706.

 707.
How to buy Microsoft Office from another device using a code from a retailer

 708.
If you don’t have a Windows PC, or you’re on a Mac, there’s an alternate way to buy Microsoft Office. You can purchase a download code at a third-party retailer like Amazon or Best Buy. Frequently, you’ll see sales on Office at lower prices. You can then use the code at Microsoft’s website to redeem a traditional download.

 709.
Step 1: Note down the code. You’ll see it in an email, or in a receipt from the retailer you purchased Office from.

 710.
Step 2: Head to Microsoft’s website. Sign in with a Microsoft Account. This account will be used to activate your license and redownload the apps later.

 711.

 712.
713.

 714.
Step 3: Enter the code that you received and press Next.

 715.
Step 4: You’ll be prompted to download the applications. Follow the steps on your screen.

 716.
Step 5: Your Office subscription will be tied to your Microsoft Account. In the future, you can redownload the apps from your Microsoft Account dashboard. Just choose Services and Subscripions and then Install Microsoft 365 on all your devices.

 717.

 718.
719.

 720.
How to buy Office 2021 online

 721.
If you’re not into subscriptions and want to permanently own Office, you can purchase Office 2021 as a standalone piece of software. This version of Office works on a single PC or Mac, and you can pay upfront. A typical license costs $160. It only works on one PC or Mac, and there is no access to the mobile or web applications for iPhones, Android devices, or Chromebooks.

 722.
Step 1: Purchase a download code for Office 2021 from a retailer. Some retailers might offer a traditional physical version as a USB installer, but this has become rare. If your version is a USB installer, insert it into a USB port on your compute, and follow the steps on your screen. Otherwise, skip to the next steps.

 723.
Step 2: Note down the code. It will be in your email or on your receipt.

 724.
Step 3: Head to Microsoft’s website and enter in your product key.

 725.
Step 4: Follow the steps on your screen to download your Office 2021 applications.

 726.
Buying Microsoft Office is pretty simple. You have three options. For Microsoft 365, you can buy a subscription from the Microsoft Store on Windows, or use a code from a retailer. For Office 2021, you can buy a physical USB installer from a retailer, or a download code from a retailer, and then redeem Office online.

 727.
Once you redeem, you can use Office 2021 on a single PC or Mac. Or, with Microsoft 365, you can use it on five different devices, including Chromebook, iPhones, Android tablets. You’ll just have to download the respective app from your app store, and sign in with your Microsoft Account.

 808.
Aster Hospital in Dubai’s Mankhool area is seeing a similar trend.

 809.

 810.
“Our facility and clinics have seen a surge of patients coming in to get the flu shot. As many as 50 flu vaccines were administered in the month of March at our hospital,” said Dr Jyoti Upadhyay, an internal medicine specialist at Aster.

 811.

 813.
Umrah is known as a minor pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah that can be performed at any time of the year. With the Umrah season coinciding with the influenza season, health authorities have underscored the importance of vaccination to prevent the spread of flu.

 814.

 815.
Easy process

 816.

 817.
In response to the increased demand, UAE hospitals have ramped up its vaccination efforts, ensuring adequate supply and streamlining the process to accommodate the surge in patients.

 818.

 819.
“We have implemented special arrangements to accommodate the anticipated surge in demand over the next few days. This includes prioritising bookings for appointments and establishing a fast-track route for fasting pilgrims,” said Dr Ahamed.

 820.

 821.
“Additionally, the hospital promptly issues vaccination certificates for documentation, ensuring a seamless and efficient experience for all individuals seeking influenza vaccination before undertaking Umrah,” he added.

 822.

 823.
When should you take the vaccine?

 824.

 825.
Dubai doctors recommend that the pilgrims take either the Influvac or Influenza Tetra vaccine at least 10 days before their travel date.

 826.

 827.
The 10-day time frame allows for the development of optimal immunity, Dr Ahamed said.

 828.

 829.
“Given the proximity and crowded conditions encountered during Umrah, the risk of acquiring influenza is heightened, posing threat to vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with underlying conditions like diabetes and asthma,” he added.

 830.

 831.
How much does it cost?

 832.

 833.
At Thumbay University Hospital, the Influvac vaccine is being offered at Dh99.

 834.

 835.
“Our pharmacy is gearing up to stock more doses of the Influvac vaccine, to make sure everyone can get it easily,” Dr Ahamed said.

 836.

 869.
A bus carrying worshippers on a long-distance trip from Botswana to an Easter weekend church gathering in South Africa plunged off a bridge on a mountain pass Thursday and burst into flames as it hit the rocky ground below, killing at least 45 people, authorities said. 885.
The crash happened near the town of Mokopane, which is about 200 kilometres (125 miles) north of the South African capital, Pretoria.

 887.
Hours after the crash, smoke seeped from the mangled, burned wreck underneath the concrete bridge. Authorities said it appeared that the driver lost control and the bus ploughed into the barriers along the side of the bridge and then over the edge. The driver was one of the dead.

 888.

 890.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the victims appeared to be all from Botswana and had been on their way to the town of Moria in Limpopo for a popular Easter weekend pilgrimage that attracts hundreds of thousands of worshippers from South Africa and neighbouring countries who follow the Zion Christian Church.

 891.

 896.
Provincial authorities said the bus had a Botswana license plate.

 897.

 898.
South African Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga was in Limpopo province for a road safety campaign and changed plans to visit the crash scene after hearing the “devastating news”, the national Department of Transport said. She said there was an investigation underway into the cause of the crash and offered her condolences to the families of the victims.

 899.

 900.
The South African government often warns motorists to be cautious during the Easter holidays, which is a particularly busy and dangerous time for road travel. More than 200 people died in road crashes during the Easter weekend last year.

 952.
The Dubai World Cup was founded with the vision to create a premier global horse racing hub. As a bridge between global markets and cultures, Dubai has provided the perfect meeting place for the world’s horse racing community.

 953.

 954.
It is fitting that this year’s Dubai World Cup embraces the UAE’s longstanding commitment to sustainability, aligned with the decision of my brother His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to extend the Year of Sustainability into 2024.

 955.

 956.
The meeting has become another expression of our commitment to win the race to preserve our planet for future generations.

 957.

 958.
It is marvellous to see many of last year’s winners and a host of the world’s highest-rated horses returning to the 2024 Dubai World Cup night.

 959.

 960.
The 2023 edition saw seven of the world’s highest-rated horses, while three races in the event were ranked among the world’s Top 100 races, with Equinox, the ‘2023 World’s Best Racehorse’, winning the Longines Dubai Sheema Classic.

 961.

 962.
Over the years, the Dubai World Cup has not only fostered competition but also cooperation. I am heartened to see that the collaboration between racing bodies in the region has enabled several participants in the Dubai World Cup Carnival to achieve further success in neighbouring countries. This close coordination has played a vital role in enhancing the region’s stature in horse racing.

 963.

 964.
We extend our thanks to all the jockeys, trainers and owners who accepted the challenge this year and wish all visitors an enjoyable experience at the Meydan Racecourse.

 965.

 966.
Our gratitude goes to the organising team for their efforts to make this another memorable meeting. With every race of the Dubai World Cup, we celebrate not only our ethos of excellence but also the unique camaraderie that marks the global horse racing community.

 967.
