Choosing a cloud storage service

Dozens of cloud storage services now compete for customers, luring in new clients with free accounts, extra space, and social-networking rewards. So which option is the best? While there’s plenty of debate over which service to choose, no single choice stands head-and-shoulders above the rest. Each has certain advantages, and you’ll simply have to tinker around until you find the one that works for you.

That being said, if you regularly purchase MP3s from Amazon or iTunes, you’ll probably want to choose the corresponding cloud storage service: Amazon Cloud Drive or iCloud, respectively. Why? These entertainment powerhouses don’t count music purchases you’ve made from them against your storage size limit. Essentially, you can nab free cloud storage for your tunes, which enables music streaming to all your devices

Dropbox

The reasons for Dropbox’s success are simple: the service is full-featured, yet easy to use, and the marketing is top-notch. Promotions styled like gaming quests encourage users to invite friends to the service to earn more storage space. Even though a number of services offer more initial free space – Google Drive’s 5GB, iCloud’s 5GB, or SkyDrive’s 7GB, versus Dropbox’s 2 GB – many customers seem to find Dropbox’s referral-rewards system irresistible (up to 18GB free space total). Mobile support includes Android, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, and Kindle Fire

To get started, just make an account and download the desktop client. This installs a folder where you can drag-and-drop files in order to transfer them to the cloud. You’ll see a pop-up notification anytime anything new is added to your account; if this annoys you, you can disable it in preferences.

One of Dropbox’s main strengths is its constant backup of word files. If you sync your Dropbox folder to your main documents folder, Dropbox will automatically backup any changes you make to each document. To access previous versions of a document, simply right-click on a file within your Dropbox folder, select “Dropbox,” and then choose “View previous versions.” This feature can be invaluable if you accidentally overwrite a file, or if you’re working collaboratively on a project.

Speaking of collaborative projects, Dropbox boasts excellent sharing abilities. Invite someone to share a particular Dropbox folder with you and that folder will appear right on their desktop. You can also send a link to an individual document or image. Additionally, Dropbox offers the best Facebook integration of any service at the moment. Finally, folders full of images can be viewed as a gallery, making Dropbox a viable photo-sharing alternative to Picasa, Imgur, and Flickr.

The lowdown: Least amount of starting free space; greatest possible free space through referrals; best version-control backup; best Facebook integration; great sharing capabilities; good for multiple computers and devices.

Google Drive

We covered Google Drive when it first came out back in April, and the service has only improved since then. As you might have guessed, its greatest strengths all relate to integration with other Google services. With a free account, in addition to 5GB of Google Drive space, you’ll get 10GB of Gmail storage and 1GB on Picasa. Mobile support includes iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Signing up is as simple as logging in with a Gmail address and password. From there, Google Drive appears right in your Google toolbar, just a click away from your email inbox. You can drag-and-drop files straight into your browser, or download the desktop client to have access to Google Drive as a folder, just like with Dropbox.

Google Drive borrows from Google’s powerful search algorithm to allow searches of not only file names, but also text in scanned documents and objects in images (a neat trick for those with years of vacation photos). You can upload photos straight to Google+ or view more than 30 types of files directly in-browser, including some like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator – for which you may not have the actual software.

But Google Drive’s standout features are its sharing and collaboration tools. Thanks to integration with Gmail, you can share files with a click, with or without requiring a password. And when you work with partners on the same word file, spreadsheet, or presentation, either separately or right at the same time, Google Drive marks the contributions of each person with differently coloured labels to make clear what’s changed.

The lowdown: Only service to integrate with Gmail and Google Docs; best sharing and collaboration capabilities; access files directly in-browser; edit documents directly in-browser; affordable upgrade plans.

Microsoft SkyDrive

It’s not so much that Microsoft SkyDrive does any one thing better than other cloud storage systems (other than being the only service to support Windows phones). It’s simply that SkyDrive packs the most punch out of them all, combining many of the nicest features from each program for a well-rounded overall package. If you don’t have a pressing reason to choose another service, it’s hard to go wrong with SkyDrive. Mobile support includes Windows phones, Android, iPhone, and iPad.

To get SkyDrive, you’ll need to sign in using a Microsoft account (previously called a Windows Live account). Next, install the desktop client, which functions as a normal folder. As with Dropbox, you can share folders or individual files with a link, as well as access previous versions of files. You can also post photos directly from SkyDrive to Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social-networking sites, which is a nice time-saving touch.

However, one of SkyDrive’s most innovative features is its built-in remote access capabilities. From the SkyDrive.com website, you can get access to any PC associated with your account that has the SkyDrive client installed, even files not already uploaded to SkyDrive. In other words, say you forget to move a presentation to your SkyDrive folder before leaving for work, but your home computer is still on. Simply sign into SkyDrive and retrieve it from afar, whether it’s on your hard drive or a connected external hard drive. We can see this remote-access feature saving users a lot of frustration and heartache.

SkyDrive is also the only service to integrate with free Office Web Apps, allowing you to work collaboratively on projects much like in Google Docs. However, the Office Web Apps have the advantage of opening Word, PowerPoint, and Excel documents seamlessly, avoiding any formatting kerfuffles. SkyDrive maintains the 25 most recent versions of every file, so if a partner makes a change you don’t like, you can easily revert to an easier version. SkyDrive also hooks up with OneNote, a sleek note-taking program that works well on touch pads and monitors alike.

The lowdown: Only service (besides Box) to sync with Windows phones; only service to integrate with Microsoft Office Web apps; most initial free space (7GB); inexpensive upgrades; great collaboration tools and version-control backup; built-in remote access capability.

Amazon Cloud Drive

Although Amazon Cloud Drive has beefed up since it first appeared on the scene, via Cloud Player, it still doesn’t offer the editing, sharing, or collaboration abilities of other services.

It does support mobile integration with the Kindle Fire, but then again, so does Dropbox.

However, the ease of storing music, e-books, and videos purchased from Amazon.com itself may sweeten the deal for high-volume users, especially since Amazon Cloud Drive doesn’t count Amazon music purchases against your storage limit. To use it, sign into an Amazon.com account and download the desktop client.

The lowdown: Inexpensive upgrades; integration with Kindle Fire; free storage and streaming for Amazon MP3s; sparse features for word documents and spreadsheets.

iCloud

Your bound to see similarities between Amazon Cloud Drive and Apple’s iCloud. Like Amazon, iCloud starts with 5GB of free storage. Also like Amazon, iCloud’s strengths lie in music storage and streaming.

You’ll want this option if you purchase, organise, and access most of your music and other media through iTunes, especially since music purchased from iTunes doesn’t count against your storage limit. As you might imagine, iCloud plays along very nicely with the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV.

The lowdown: Inexpensive upgrades; integration with all Apple devices; free storage and streaming for iTunes MP3s; sparse features for word documents and spreadsheets.

Box
These guys are new on the block. https://www.box.com/

Box is an all-around solid service, and may offer a compelling alternative to users who are wary to place ever-increasing amounts of information in the control of Google, Amazon, Apple, or Microsoft. Mobile support for all accounts includes Android, iPhone, and iPad.

Free accounts start at 5GB, although in a bit of a bizarre twist, many of Box’s rather common-place features only come bundled with a business account,

Shelling out for the latter will land you a whopping 1,000GB of storage space (which is just 24GB shy of 1TB), as well as version-history backups, password-protected sharing, and search abilities.

Indeed, in many ways Box seems best geared toward corporate use, and it shows. Clients include Proctor & Gamble, Six Flags, and Pandora. If you’re a small-business owner or a startup, Box may be right up your alley. All accounts, even free ones, allow you to share files or folders with a link. Box also integrates the ability to add comments and assign tasks for easy collaboration and workflow management.

The lowdown: Best for businesses; integrated workflow management tools; great sharing and collaboration potential; free accounts lacking some features.

Sorry it's a lot to take in but I hope it is of help.
The Mad Hatter (Follow That Man) DNS-DIRECT

While rumors of it floated around for months, with speculations that the iPad Mini would be coming soon, it indeed came true and people are talking about it! Here is CNET's take on it.

Now that you've got a glimpse of what the Mini has to offer, what do you think? Are you excited to see it? Disappointed? How does it match up against Apple competitors in the arena of the same-size tablets: better or worse? What about that starting price point of $329? Is that the price you were expecting or is it too high or low? Your fellow members are speaking up to tell you how they feel about this new Apple product

We had no shortage of exciting tech product announcements this past month, from the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, Nokia Lumia 920 running Windows 8, to the Nintendo Wii U -- what's not to love? But the one product that takes the cake as the most anticipated was the iPhone 5; the media frenzy around it was absolutely crazy, to say the least. Call it hype, but with a record 2 million preordered iPhone 5s (that's double the preorders from the last version) just within the first 24 hours, that has to say something about how many people are waiting to get their hands on one. If you didn't make the preorder list and want this phone really bad -- well, you'd better grab a sleeping bag and chair, join the folks camping out in front of the Apple stores, and wait another couple of days until it is for sale to the public. But be aware that some folks have been camping out since the beginning of the week, so you might be at the end of some really long lines. And for the record, I will not be near any Apple Store for a while.

Now that some of us have gotten a glimpse of the iPhone 5 (if you haven't yet, click here for the CNET editor, Scott Stein full and thorough iPhone 5 review) -- what do you think of the new iPhone 5? Were you happy or disappointed? Do you think the new iPhone is overrated, or is it everything you thought it would be and then some? What do you think about the new features? The new iPhone is thinner, lighter, faster, and sports a larger screen size than the previous version, but there other phones that are already on the market that have comparable specs. Are you going to buy an iPhone 5 or are you going to pass on it for another brand and model?
Here's how and it cost you nothing.!!!

The topic may not apply to those of you on Windows machines, but I still wanted to give our readers who are Mac owners or Mac newbies a chance to participate and learn something new. Maybe even one day some of you Windows users will be adapting to Macs, so you never know if this knowledge will come in handy.
if you do decide to do it yourself, you'll not only save some money, but also learn something new and be proud that you were able to do it on your own.

Apple has a program called Migration Assistant. It's fantastic! Unlike it's Windows counterpart, Migration Assistant moves programs as well as data. It's intuitive, easy to use, and works with just a FireWire cable.

But yes, there's a possibility some of the programs you move will not run on the latest Macs. Or they may need updates before they will work. Do your research before investing in the new computer.
Humm

Let me ask you this, when you visit a Web site that requires you to log in with your username or password to access information on the site, do you manually input your log-in credentials every time, or do you let your Web browser store the log-in information for you, so the next time you visit the site it can log you in automatically? Well, if you have a habit of letting your browser store log-in credentials and passwords for the sake of convenient access or simply because you have a hard time remembering that information, you may just want read up on this week's topic question from member Sarah, who asked if she's being stupid by saving her Web site log-in credentials in Web browsers.

Sarah, I'm glad you asked this question, as I'm sure many people do this all the time. You ask, is this a stupid thing to do? I wouldn't call it stupid, but I would call it risky -- storing personal information anywhere has its risks, especially when you aren't in control of it. The fewer places you have log-in names and passwords available for someone to steal, the less chance there is of them being compromised.

I will admit that I personally sometimes do store log-in and passwords for sites that I frequently visit; HOWEVER, it's never for a site that is financial in nature, and never a site that can be used to personally identify who I am, or cause any harm to myself, to others, or to the site. If any would-be perpetrators were to gain access to my log-in name and password from those sites, they wouldn't be able to use those credentials on any of my secure sites.

This invaluable and a good wake-up call to all those who let their browser do the storing of their log-in information, so read up and be informed of the risk you are taking. Thank you to all those who have stepped up and shared your knowledge on this important topic. Stay safe out there, people

This is what the Mad Hatter thinks which is my own view on this "What's up with Apple releasing iPad 4 just 6 months after I bought the 'new iPad'? I think they'll lose a lot of goodwill for this upgrade."
But hey that's just me.

Any way back to the news!!!!

However, some Apple Stores are offering customers the opportunity to trade in their third generation iPad for a new iPad 4.

Apple staff in its Birmingham, Aberdeen and Kingston stores confirmed to ZDNet that they were aware of the new policy, while Manchester and Cardiff store workers said they were not aware of the deal.

The Birmingham shop assistant said customers could also trade in their iPad 2 for an iPad 4. However, Apple has not responded to a request for confirmation.

The new iPad 4 (Wi-Fi only model) can be pre-ordered from Friday and will be available in all 35 UK stores from 2 November with prices starting at £399 for a 16GB model. However, the 4G version will not go on sale until a later date.

The fourth-generation iPad comes only seven months after the iPad 3 was released in March.

It has he same 9.7-inch retina display as the iPad 3 but includes an A6X processor, which Apple said doubles the processing and graphics perfomance. It also comes with a next generation ISP (image stabilisation processor), 10-hour battery life and a HD 720p camera for FaceTime. The new iPad is the first to be charged by Apple's Lightning connector.

Alongside the new iPad, Apple also launched the iPad Mini, Mac Mini, iMac, and the MacBook Pro 13 with retina display.
Stay tuned to The Mad Hatter for comments!!!
So here's the tech

Apple loves to tout display tech improvements, since having top-notch screens is one of the key benefits of all of Apple's gear, from the iPod touch all the way up to the Retina MacBook Pros. So it's safe to bet the new iPad 4 screen is the same on the third-gen iPad that came out in March of this year.

It's got a 2048x1536 resolution, at 264 pixels per inch, and IPS technology makes it easy to see from wide angles. You can hold this new iPad nearly flat before the display becomes hard to see.
The front and rear cameras on the new iPad are the same as before, but the A6X chip has improved the image signal processing, adding support for facial recognition and image stabilization. We couldn't test this camera side-by-side against an iPad 3's, but the facial recognition worked as it should on the iPad 4, automatically finding faces as we composed our shots and keeping them in focus.
The Lightning port, if you haven't seen it on the iPhone 5 yet, is laughably slim compared to the honking 30-pin port it replaces. A Lightning connector is tiny but feels sturdy, and can be inserted either way. So you never find yourself trying to shove it in the wrong way, and you never feel the metal-on-metal crunch of pins when connecting.
It clicks into place smoothly and is held by tiny clips, strong enough to support the new iPad's weight.

Apple also rolled out Lightning versions of the popular iPad adaptors and accessories. Lightning to VGA adapter for projectors is £39, and so is the Lightning Digital AV Adaptor, which has an HDMI port.
For connecting cameras, the Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor and Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader are sold separately - you used to get both in one package for 30-pin iPads, the iPad Camera Connection Kit. Finally, if you want to use your old 30-pin cables to charge and sync your iPad 4, the Lightning to 30-pin adaptor is £25.
The other upgrade is the wireless connectivity, and it seems minor but should make a considerable difference. All the iPads get dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi, using the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands for less interference for other devices without losing any range.
Plus, since the new iPad 4 can use both channels at once, you can get theoretical speeds of up to 150Mbps - faster than most Wi-Fi networks you'll encounter anyway.
New iPad 4 release date

Like the iPad mini, the new iPad 4 can be ordered on October 26 for delivery on November 2. And, 4G-enabled models will ship a few weeks later at the end of November.

Early verdict

If you just upgraded your iPad in the spring, don't worry that you're missing much with this bump in the new iPad 4. We know a lot of people will feel betrayed, having thought they were getting the best Apple has to offer for at least a year - but that shouldn't cause that much consternation.
However, if you're still using an iPad 2 or an original iPad, it's a significant step up, and still brings all the same Apple bells, whistles and whizz bang whoosh that most have come to expect from the Cupertino's most popular tablet.

Government ‘war’ on freelancers could damage public sector

Government ‘war’ on freelancers could damage public sector
Wednesday, 18 July 2012
Vital public sector departments including the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and HM Treasury have drawn up guidelines that will effectively eliminate freelancers from the public sector.

The draconian measures outlined in papers leaked to PCG will render freelancing within the public sector almost impossible and according to sources within the sector could destabilise and undermine the foundations of some of the UK’s most important public sector departments. The leaked documents detail measures, which maintain freelancers on a day rate of £220 plus and on contracts over six months, will be made to operate IR35 or have their contracts terminated. It is seen as HMRC’s outright war on freelancers and contractors working through their limited company in the public sector.

According to John Brazier, MD of PCG, the damage caused by the actions of the Government should not to be underestimated. Mr. Brazier said: “The harsh reality of this move will be to remove public sector access to freelance expertise and bluntly threatens to destabilise many Government Departments. It is vitally important the Government does not undermine the UK’s vibrant flexible workforce. The phrase ‘throwing the baby out with the bathwater’ comes to mind when you read these proposals.

“This has gone a way beyond Ed Lester the Head of the Student Loans Company who was clearly a case of false self employment; this is now attacking legitimate contractors who have done nothing wrong and are taking the brunt of a panic stricken Government and an HMRC who have launched a witch hunt. These people are essential to delivering vital public services and they are being treated in a scandalous way. The repercussions for operation of Government are potentially catastrophic.”

Under the new guidance, PCG predict that thousands of experts engaged on short term project work will be forced out, leaving bodies like the NHS and the Ministry of Defence without access to vital resources such as IT contractors and healthcare professionals. The assurance guidance, which comes into force from 15th September 2012, centres on proper engagement of freelance resource in an ‘off-payroll’ capacity. Unfortunately, according to PCG’s sources within the public sector, the nature of the ‘business tests’ recommended for use within the guidance combined with huge financial penalties for any public sector body found to be contravening them have resulted in almost no room for legitimate freelancers to exist.

John Brazier added:” I do not believe the Government fully understands the consequences of these measures. PCG will do its best to highlight these issues to Ministers and MPs. They will also work tirelessly to protect legitimate freelance businesses in the private sector.”

Thank you PCG for this update what is our government doing? Another knee jerk reaction after the last government did there best to help small Business and freelancers to make it a even playing field in the public sector.

We at DNS-DIRECT like to keep up informed. As we had the malware attack on the Apple Mac systems i have a few things you can do.

WHAT IS FLASHBACK/FLASHFAKE?
It is a family of malware for Mac OS X. The first versions of this type of threat were detected in September 2011. In March 2012 over 600 000 computers worldwide were infected by Flashback. The infected computers have been combined in a botnet which enables cyber criminals to install additional malicious modules on them at will.

Goto http://flashbackcheck.com/

This will check to see if you have a virus.

The second thing you can download a little which i use on my Mac called Little Snitch which will let monitor network traffic.

A firewall protects your computer against unwanted guests from the
Internet. But who protects your private data from being sent out? Little Snitch does!

Protect your privacy

As
soon as you’re connected to the Internet, applications can potentially
send whatever information they want to wherever they want.
Sometimes
they do this for good reason, on your explicit request. But often they
don’t. Little Snitch allows you to intercept these unwanted connection
attempts, and lets you decide how to proceed.
Little Snitch
informs you whenever a program attempts to establish an outgoing
Internet connection. You can then choose to allow or deny this
connection, or define a rule how to handle similar, future connection
attempts. This reliably prevents private data from being sent out
without your knowledge. Little Snitch runs inconspicuously in the
background and it can also detect network related activity of viruses,
Trojans and other malware.

Goto http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html

I hope these solutions help.
More than half a million Apple computers have been infected with the Flashback Trojan, according to a Russian anti-virus firm.

Its report claims that about 600,000 Macs have installed the malware - potentially allowing them to be hijacked and used as a "botnet".
The firm, Dr Web, says that more than half that number are based in the US.
Apple has released a security update, but users who have not installed the patch remain exposed.
Flashback was first detected last September when anti-virus
researchers flagged up software masquerading itself as a Flash Player
update. Once downloaded it deactivated some of the computer's security
software.
Later versions of the malware exploited weaknesses in the
Java programming language to allow the code to be installed from bogus
sites without the user's permission.

Remote control
Dr Web said that once the Trojan was installed it sent a
message to the intruder's control server with a unique ID to identify
the infected machine.
"By introducing the code criminals are potentially able to
control the machine," the firm's chief executive Boris Sharov told the
BBC.
"We stress the word potential as we have never seen any
malicious activity since we hijacked the botnet to take it out of
criminals' hands. However, we know people create viruses to get money.
"The largest amounts of bots - based on the IP addresses we
identified - are in the US, Canada, UK and Australia, so it appears to
have targeted English-speaking people."
Dr Web also notes that 274 of the infected computers it
detected appeared to be located in Cupertino, California - home to
Apple's headquarters.
Update wait
Java's developer, Oracle, issued a fix to the vulnerability on 14 February, but this did not work on Macintoshes as Apple manages Java updates to its computers.

Apple released its own "security update"
on Wednesday - more than eight weeks later. It can be triggered by
clicking on the software update icon in the computer's system
preferences panel.

The security firm F-Secure has also posted detailed instructions about how to confirm if a machine is infected and how to remove the Trojan.
Although Apple's system software limits the actions its
computers can take without requesting their users' permission, some
security analysts suggest this latest incident highlights the fact that
the machines are not invulnerable.
"People used to say that Apple computers, unlike Windows PCs,
can't ever be infected - but it's a myth," said Timur Tsoriev, an
analyst at Kaspersky Lab.
A quick announcement to start: We just opened a Windows 8 forum for you to discuss and browse all the happenings around this pre-release OS. It's still in the beta-testing phase, but let's get started early as there is a lot of buzz around it already. Enjoy!

A couple of weeks back, we presented the newsletter topic from Robert F., "E-mail account compromised. How do I stop the spammers?" and he has graciously written a thank you note. Robert, thanks for following up with us!

Now let's get cracking on how we can help Andrew. He owns a pub that offers free Wi-Fi, but is having problems with bandwidth leeches, causing not only a strain on his bandwidth, but also possibly increasing his cost from his ISP due to exceeding usage.

Well, Andrew, many members have come to help. The recommendations varied from setting up software or firewalls and managing people's use (limiting bandwidth or password-protect) to calling on professional services to help set up a service for you. The solution that I personally thought was great is to use software that will password-protect Wi-Fi access. Sure it's a little inconvenient for your customers to enter a password to gain access to your Wi-Fi, but this will allow only your customers to use it, and bandwidth leeches outside the pub won't be able to gain access.

So, check out all the great recommendations in the discussion thread, and Andrew, when you do come to a solution that works for your business, please update us here. Good luck! Thanks to all who shared their wealth of knowledge. Have an awesome Easter weekend!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dns-ltd.blogspot.com/2012/04/can-you-help-me-stop-bandwidth-leeches.html' title='Can you help me stop the bandwidth leeches at my pub's free Wi-Fi hot spot?'/>

Which streaming-media device is right for you?

Hi It's the Mad Hatter.

There have been some controversial reports these past couple of days; for instance, did you hear about the woman who broke her nose at an Apple store and is suing Apple for $1 million? Or how about the high school student who was expelled for tweeting a swear word? Did those two things really just happen? Don't worry I'm not here to talk about those news items; instead I'll talk about something you might find more helpful.

For those who are curious or looking into purchasing a streaming-media device and are a bit overwhelmed by all the choices. We offers a great rundown of these streaming devices, including the Roku box, Blu-ray players, and gaming consoles that offer this feature; how much they cost; and the compatible services. But what I liked most was his breakdown of who shouldn't buy a streaming-media device. In addition to his informative blog, your fellow community members have already started to comment on which devices they use and what they don't like or like about them, so it's a great way to get some more opinions on the matter.

If you already own one of these devices, or are thinking of getting one, or just have a strong opinion, don't be shy. Join the conversation and tell us your thoughts on streaming-media devices.

Take a look at the options?

There are more ways than ever to stream Netflix and other online services. But which device is best for you?
A data breach that may have exposed as many as 1.5 million credit card accounts has been "absolutely contained", according to the firm behind the leak.

Global Payments processes payments for firms such as Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

It admitted that thieves had accessed card account numbers, expiration data and security codes.

This prompted Visa to drop the US firm from its list of approved vendors.

The firm's share price also fell.

Website help
Over the weekend, Global Payments said the thieves had exported the stolen information but stressed that they did not have customer names, addresses or Social Security numbers.

The company said it would work with regulators, industry third parties and law enforcement agencies to help minimise any impact to credit cardholders.

It has set up a website to help cardholders although it has not provided the names of stores or banks that were affected by the breach. The company's share price fell more than 3% on Monday, following a 9% drop on Friday.

Besides processing cards in the US, Global Payments provides its services to government agencies, businesses and others in Canada, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Global Payments Chief Executive Paul Garcia has pledged to spend more on security.

However, he told the Wall Street Journal that he was not surprised that Visa had struck his firm off its list of approved payment processors.

"It wouldn't be unexpected for Mastercard to take similar action," he added.

Spear phishing
Security firms warned that hackers could use the information they took to mine more personal data.

This is used in so-called spear phishing attacks, in which highly targeted fake emails are sent to people mimicking a message from their real bank and asking them to hand over personal information.

A number of security breaches have taken place in the last couple of years.

Last June, hackers stole information for 360,000 credit card accounts at Citigroup. In the past year, there have been high-profile data attacks against the International Monetary Fund, Google and Sony's PlayStation Network.

TIPS

Cardholders

Unauthorized credit card activity and other criminal acts of fraud are an unfortunate reality today. Despite the numerous
technology safeguards, rigorous monitoring and advanced tracking systems, credit card holders need to be vigilant. There are
helpful measures cardholders can take and resources available to help individuals protect themselves and minimize the effects
of fraud.
What should I do if I think my card numbers have been compromised?
Significantly, our investigation to date has revealed that no names, addresses or social security numbers were taken in this
incident. Nevertheless, if you believe your credit card information is at risk, immediately contact your card issuing institution or
bank and all other relevant financial institutions. Many companies have toll-free numbers and 24-hour service to assist those
who believe they are at risk. This number can be found on the back of your credit/debit card. By law, once you report the loss
or theft, you have no further responsibility for unauthorized charges.

In addition, you can place a Fraud Alert on your credit report. In order to do this, you’ll need to contact all three credit bureaus
individually:

TransUnion: (www.transunion.com)
Equifax: (www.equifax.com)
Experian: (www.experian.com)

Best practices for keeping your card safe
Monitor your accounts regularly, checking for unauthorized transactions.
Be conscious of all information you share online. Even non-financial information can be enough to allow thieves to steal
your identity.

If certain bills do not arrive on time, this may be a sign your information is at risk. Go paperless whenever possible.
Keep an eye out for credit cards you didn’t apply for, denials of credit for no apparent reason, or calls/letters from debt
collectors or businesses for goods or services you did not receive.
Never provide sensitive information to unsolicited requests. Most financial institutions will not proactively solicit any
personal information or card information.

Get a credit report - You are entitled to a free credit report once every 12 months.
Periodically contact your bank to inquire about possible fraudulent activity to be aware of.
Consider using identity theft protection, including services that include fraud alerts and credit freezes.

The annual analysis of data breaches by Verizon uncovered a huge rise in politically motivated attacks.

Verizon found that 58% of all the data stolen during breaches in 2011 was purloined by these groups.

Hacktivists were hard to defend against, it said, as their attack strategies were much harder to predict.

The Verizon report catalogued 855 incidents around the world in which 174 million records were stolen.
Data defences

"Hacktivism has been around for a some time but it's mainly been website defacements," said Wade Baker, director of research and intelligence at Verizon. "In 2011 it was more about going to steal a bunch of information from a company."

The hacktivist attacks were spearheaded by the Anonymous hacker group and its tech-savvy offshoots Antisec and Lulzsec. These activists scored a significant number of successes by knocking out websites and stealing large amounts of data from private companies and government agencies.

"Data theft became a mechanism for political protest," said Mr Baker. He added that it was hard to develop specific defences against these attacks because they used tactics and techniques crafted for each occasion.

He said the attacks by hacktivists were not very common but often netted huge amounts of data when they did penetrate defences.

In contrast to that stolen by hacktivists, about 35% of data pilfered from large companies was taken by organised criminal groups which wanted to sell it or use it to commit another crime.

Mr Baker said cybercriminals continued to be a huge threat to large companies, and constantly battered their internet defences looking for weaknesses. These attacks, he said, tended to be opportunistic and capitalised on any loopholes and vulnerabilities they found.

While few firms were going out of business or suffering lasting damage because of a data breach, he said, companies still had work to do to ensure they knew they were safe.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dns-ltd.blogspot.com/2012/04/its-not-funny-hackers-steal-more-than.html' title='It's not funny Hackers 'steal more than criminals''/>

What are Sony playing at!!!!!!

What if I told you that the next DVD/Blu-ray player you buy will only play newly bought discs?

And if you were to buy used, borrow your friends' discs, or rent games, your machine would not play them? Well, it has been reported that the new Sony PlayStation 4 console (or Orbis as it's said to be called) will not play PlayStation 3 games, and the console will also have anti-used-game measures built in.

That means no more playing rental games or borrowing games from your buddy, and of course you can't play pre-owned games! What has been reported is that if you do use secondhand games, you'll have to pay an extra fee. Why all this madness?!

It looks like game developers feel like used game sales are choking the industry.

To be fair, it was reported earlier this year that Microsoft is considering blocking used games on the next version of the Xbox.

I don't know about you, but to me that's just crazy! My son and I buy used games quite a bit, and it would be a huge setback for both of us if they were to go through with this. I will probably just say no to a newer console, at least until the game prices are lowered, or I'll just refuse to buy a new console and go back to PC gaming until something changes.

So what do you all think about this? Are you willing to buy a console that locks out secondhand games?

What do you think will happen to all those game outlets that sell pre-owned games or game rental services. Is their business model doomed? If companies like Sony and Microsoft go through with this, do you think it will have a negative effect on the game industry, or will it have no impact at all, because people will continue to buy new?
