241. <p>Awarded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the prestigious fellowship provides substantial support, including a $200,000 grant, to advance recipients’ work. Yazdiha emerged successfully from an intensive evaluation process involving hundreds of candidates to earn the fellowship.</p>
242. <p>She said the fellowship provides a unique opportunity for scholars to conduct meaningful research and build connections across various disciplines. “The Carnegie is invaluable for the time, resources and community it offers to build out thoughtful, impactful research and to connect with scholars similarly committed to tackling big, unwieldy questions.”</p>

480.  <p>During the first few weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, Los Angeles County officials faced an urgent crisis. They knew that hundreds of thousands of the county’s 10 million residents might go hungry because of job losses and the breakdown in the community food supply, but they didn’t know who was affected and didn’t have a ready means to find out.</p>
481. <p>Money wasn’t the problem. The county had federal emergency funding to provide food assistance. But it lacked information to reach the right people, some of whom had never been food insecure before. The way food insecurity is measured in the United States does not capture granular, real-time changes on the ground. The data that county leaders had to rely on in April 2020 had last been updated in 2018. Complicating matters, public-health orders to stay at home meant that the food-assistance landscape had to be drastically reimagined. The county needed help, but its Emergency Food Security Branch did not have a research arm to analyze the rapidly changing circumstances.</p>
482. <p>Too often, when faced with crises such as this one, policymakers must rely on a combination of obsolete data, guesswork, and luck to help the public. In this case, however, a new approach was possible. <a href="https://publicexchange.usc.edu/">Public Exchange</a> was conceived and built at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, where I serve as <a href="https://dornsife.usc.edu/our-leadership/amber-d-miller/">dean</a>, to deploy academic expertise at scale to address societal problems and to reinvigorate public trust in research as serving the public good.</p>

1199.  <p>Hari Kunzru, a British novelist in New York and esteemed columnist for <em>Harper’s Magazine</em>, has been named the winner of the 2024 <a href="https://dornsife.usc.edu/chowdhury-prize/">Chowdhury Prize in Literature</a>, presented by the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences with the support of the <a href="https://www.subirchowdhury.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Subir and Malini Chowdhury Foundation</a>.</p>
1200. <p>Kunzru’s short stories and six novels, including <em>White Tears</em> (Knopf, 2017), <em>Gods Without Men</em> (Vintage Contemporaries, 2011), and <em>My Revolutions</em> (Dutton Adult, 2007), span diverse genres and themes, from the aftermath of 1960s radicalism to the mythologies of the Mojave. The judges note that Kunzru’s works navigate the vast expanse of politics and culture through an acutely literary lens.</p>

1439.  <p>When the “hockey stick” graph, which illustrated a steep increase in global temperatures, was published in 1998, it reshaped the world’s understanding of climate change. A quarter-century later, with climate change now wreaking havoc around the world, graphics depicting global warming are more important than ever to inform policymaking.</p>
1440. <p>However, a recent USC-led study reveals that some graphics developed for reports by the <a href="https://www.ipcc.ch/">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change</a> (IPCC) are too complex, even for the intended audiences of policymakers and practitioners.</p>
1441. <p>Researchers recommend limiting each graphic, which the IPCC refers to as “figures,” and its title to one key message. The study produced a detailed checklist to improve the design of graphics that target policymakers and practitioners.</p>

2161. <p>Everett isn’t a nominee himself; he’s the author of the 2001 novel <em>Erasure</em>, which was the basis for the five-time Oscar-nominated film <em>American Fiction</em>. Written and directed by Cord Jefferson, the film is nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor (Jeffrey Wright), Best Supporting Actor (Sterling K. Brown) and Best Original Score (Laura Karpman).</p>
