Anytime of year is the right time for cherry pie. It can be during the blazing heat of summer or a chilly, blustery day and cherry pie just always seems fit fit. And this one? It&#39;s so, so good! It has a top and bottom crust, as it should, but also has two types of cherries: sour pie cherries and dried cherries, both of which are available any time of year. This pie is one of my boyfriend&#39;s favorites. This one, he claims, is in the top five of any dessert I&#39;ve ever made. Now that&#39;s saying something!<br>

If you know me, you know that I love making first birthday cakes. I love how colorful and playful the themes tend to be. For this cake I was given creative freedom to do whatever I wanted, as long as it fed 20 people, mango was used in the filling and had an elephant front and center. Easy peasy!<br>

Technically there are two basic kinds of brownies: fudgy and cakey. Fudgy brownies usually begin with chocolate and butter that are melted together. Cakey brownies start with butter and sugar that are creamed together, with the chocolate added later. For me, a brownie by its very nature should be fudgy because if it&#39;s not, then it&#39;s really just cake. These brownies fall into the first category, fudgy! They are dense and moist and totally luscious. Since they have more chocolate than any other ingredient, it&#39;s important to shell out a little extra dough for the good stuff. Avoid all the normal store brands of chocolate like Nestle, Bakers or Hershey&#39;s. Look for good brands such as Lindt, Scharfeen Burger, Valrona or Ghiradelli. Trader Joe&#39;s and Ikea store brands are both great options too and I would recommend them. I used a very fancy pants brand called Maracaibo Clasificado 65%. I get this from a chocolate shop hear where I live. It&#39;s not that expensive, actually and the flavor is fantastic.<br>

So you&#39;ll never guess what I treated myself to a few weeks ago: a fancy, schmancy new camera that takes beautiful photos. And where was said camera when I made this cake? Hanging on a hook at home, packed safely in its bag. That&#39;s a great place for it but not when I get a hankerin&#39; to bake and I&#39;m away from home! Sadly I had to rely upon my phone&#39;s camera which has a reputation for being less than stellar at taking reliable photos. </div>

A few weeks ago I was contacted by the great people over at <a href="http://www.solofoods.com/">Solo Foods</a> to enter their <a href="http://www.solofoods.com/news/sweetest-16-baking-recipe-contest">Sweetest 16 Baking Recipe Contest</a>. They sent me a box chock full of almond paste and several of their pastry and pie fillings and asked me to come up with an original recipe. I pondered over this for a while before I began to bake. I wanted to make something different and not the typical macaroon or almond cake. I almost entered my recipe for <a href="http://dozenflours.com/2009/12/king-of-cakes-baumkuchen.html">The King of Cakes: Baumkuchen</a> but decided to think a bit outside of the box. <br>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Don&#39;t you just love summer? I sure do. Around Seattle, summer only lasts about eight weeks with a few weeks in July (if we&#39;re lucky), most August, and a few weeks into September. Although I do love the weather in the Pacific Northwest, the summers are just resplendent. It&#39;s almost as if our summer days are more concentrated in smile producing endorphins and sunshine. Or maybe it&#39;s just that I&#39;m just that much more grateful for a clear day that&#39;s warm and I don&#39;t need to wear a few extra layers. </span><br>

Each quarter at work we have a big meeting that we refer to as the &quot;Town Hall&quot;. The meetings are informative, entertaining and full of creative videos that keep everyone rapt with attention (and laughing!). Unfortunately the meeting has a reputation for being lengthy, sometimes exceeding ninety minutes in duration. To help ease the pain of sitting that long, I was asked to provide something yummy for the troupes and I gladly accepted. All together, I made six different cakes! I tried to find recipes that would appeal to everyone in attendance and I knew this one was sure to get gobbled up. Overall it was a great success and I especially enjoyed watching everyone come into the big conference room and see the freshly baked goodies waiting for them. Cake makes people smile!<br>

<span class="firstlet">O</span>ne seemingly normal February day, I received a friendly email and a cake order inquiry from Val, a fellow baker. While this does happen from time to time, this one was rather peculiar because Val was from England! A full 4800+ miles from me! Val explained that her son lived in Seattle and she wanted a surprise birthday cake for her daughter-in-law Abi. I was so excited, I couldn&#39;t write Val back fast enough to get more details. After a few emails back and forth, her cake order was finalized and I had my very first transatlantic order!<br>

<span class="firstlet">I</span>&#39;ve been making pumpkin bread for many years, even before I ever started baking with any confidence. This was mostly due to how easy this recipe is to make. All you do is dump all the ingredients into a bowl, mix it until it&#39;s all blended together, pour it into prepared loaf pans, and bake at 350 a little more than an hour, and eat. Summer is here in the Pacific Northwest and oh how glorious it is! I absolutely love this time of year and try to relish every last minute of it. As such, I find myself spending a lot more time outside and out of my kitchen and that mean a lot less baking. Last Fall, back when it was Allison&#39;s birthday, I made two beautiful <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citrus_aurantifolia">Key lime</a> pies to celebrate her special day. As I was leaving for work that morning, it occurred to me that I forgot to take photos of it and figured I&#39;d just take some once I arrived at work. Well, those plans came to a screeching halt right after both pies slid off the tray and landed bottom-side-down onto the asphalt. Luckily, they were still edible but the jolt of being smacked to the ground caused them to crack and all my airy whipped cream deflated. I felt so terrible presenting such an ugly dessert, but Allison didn’t care one bit, nor did anyone else that devoured them.<br>

I work in the world of technology as a business analyst and one of the interesting things about my job and the company I work for is that each time I&#39;m assigned to work on a project, I get to work with a different group of other IT professionals. These include functional analysts, developers, testers, product management professionals, designers, and information architects, among others. The majority of my teammates work in the same building as I do in Washington state, but several work in other branches as far away as Georgia and Texas.<br>

When I was looking for a recipe to use, the vast majority that I found included a box of white cake mix and strawberry gelatin. While I know that this recipe is beloved by many (it has quite the following in the South), I wanted to make cupcakes that looked an tasted like real strawberries, not day-glo red in color and strawberry Kool-aid flavored.<br>
