7. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Last week, my wife and I were out to dinner talking about how much we'd learned as rookie parents this year, as our little Mark is nearing 10 months old. </span><br />

9. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Before we had a child, as educators, we both heard over and over from parents and teachers in our respective schools that <i>"we wouldn't understand because we weren't parents yet."</i> -- What did this mean we asked ourselves? I think there is a way to say that to others without sounding condescending, but looking back, I do believe there is some truth to some of those words. </span><br />

11. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><b>Below are 10 thoughts through the lens of a parent that I'm now bringing to school with me each day.</b> These ideas encourage me to be a better listener for my families, my staff and help me see through multiple perspectives during certain situations.</span><br />

19. their parents.</span></span></li>
20. <li><span style="color: #1a1a1a;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Just to get the child in bed last
21. night, up this morning and fed was incredibly exhausting. Please forgive me for forgetting to sign something.</span></span></li>
22. <li><span style="color: #1a1a1a;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">The snack my child is eating may not
23. be the most nutritious, but he will eat it and his/her tummy will be full. (I wish
24. he would eat the broccoli too)</span></span></li>
25. <li><span style="color: #1a1a1a;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">I understand this is how you did it
26. with your child kid, but this is how we're choosing to do it with ours.</span></span></li>

28. engaged, start with learning what he/she enjoys doing when he/she is not with
29. you.</span></span></li>
30. <li><span style="color: #1a1a1a;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Yes I realize my child is three months behind
31. on this but he/she is three months ahead on that... lets focus on what he/she can do.</span></span></li>
32. <li><span style="color: #1a1a1a;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">My child's home life is night & day from school life. Ask us how we are successful at home. Work with us.</span></span></li>
33. <li><span style="color: #1a1a1a;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Since our child was three months old he has
34. been grabbing for our devices. As a teacher, please use this enthusiasm and curiosity to your advantage. Build your own capacity by learning from today's kids who already speak technology.</span></span></li>
35. <li><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: inherit;">I love my child more than anything on
36. this earth. Remember that each and every time you interact with my child and/or his/her
37. family. Would you teach/</span><span style="color: #1a1a1a;">talk to/talk about my child</span><span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-family: inherit;"> the same way if his parents were in the room?</span></span></li>

40. <span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-size: large;">Kindergarten registration is still a ways off, but as parents we're already nervous about what his education, teachers and school will offer him to meet his needs, push his strengths and how they will welcome our support from home. One thing is for sure, we want school to be an extension of the home and vice versa. Even as a new parent, I know that will be easiest for him to flourish in life and in school. Becoming a parent has no doubt helped me to become a better educator and school leader, as well as a better person. The learning is endless. </span></div>

Here in 2013, TV looks a bit different with hashtags and social media connections on each show/commercial - missing from the day and age of when EdTV was still in production. Many last night couldn't help but watch and participate in the hashtag #TEDTalksEd on their own device. The TV set the backdrop for personalized sharing using social media.</span><br>

The connected educators, parents & students who helped #TEDTalksEd trend tonight realize that social media tools like Twitter and Facebook, feared at first, are now ripping down classroom and home-school walls while allowing teaching and learning to transparently take place on the part of educators, students, parents and community members. </span><br>

Each of these hashtag "channels" could have their own spot and topic for discussion. </span></li>

Heard something you want to push forward on - use it as a PTA Meeting or faculty meeting starter. 448. began, a new student moved into my classroom. An African American student who
449. began his education in an urban environment before moving to our school
450. district, he experienced great difficulty with impulsive behaviors and bullying
451. others, and had an extensive file documenting his behavioral difficulties.  It only took me a day or two to realize
452. the potential in this young man. He was someone, who with guidance and structure
453. would have the ability to do great things. Academically, he was very strong and
454. possessed many higher level thinking skills across the board. He had potential
455. to be a strong leader, but he had difficulty relating to others and understanding
456. his parameters. </i></span></div>

458. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
459. <div class="MsoNormal">
460. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><i>Within a week of his arrival, I met with this student’s father
461. and discussed my expectations for my classroom and set both academic and
462. behavior goals. The student was present at the conference as well and
463. participated in the decision making process. I used a communication folder,
464. which was sent home each day, to track and communicate his behaviors to his
465. parents. Incentives were put in place, but most importantly, this student knew
466. that I cared. <b>He needed a positive role model, and told me that for the first
467. time in his life he had a teacher who liked him, understood him, and believed
468. in him. </b></i></span></div>

470. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><i><br /></i></span></div>

472. <span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><i>Communication with his family was very difficult because he was being
473. pulled between two parental residences. I recommended this student to be tested
474. for the Gifted Resource program in our school, and after months of trying to
475. obtain a signature from his parents giving us permission to test, the student
476. was tested and successfully qualified for the program. The day I told him the
477. news with my principal standing by my side, he jumped up and down the hallway
478. screaming, “Yes!” He threw his arms around me and wouldn’t let go, saying,
479. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” As my principal and I fought back tears, I
480. knew the impact I made on this student. I told him how proud I was of him and
481. assured him that big things will come his way as long as he keeps his behaviors
482. in check and maintains focus. </i></span></div>

487. and is no longer with me. I am hopeful that he will always remember the things
488. that I taught him and will apply those skills to his daily life. </i></span></div>

521. <span style="font-size: large;">This past weekend, I had the chance to return to Chicago, the city where I started my teaching career and spent my twenties living a few blocks from Wrigley Field. The Annual #ASCD13 Conference was in town, and I fortunate to have had my session idea accepted for presentation. The session focused creating a menu of tech and non-tech communication offerings for families, while keeping the research on family and community engagement in mind.</span><br />

No tool will ever replace a real relationship between home and school that includes eye contact, tone, empathy, mutual respect and a core focus on the child. Parents need schools to build efforts from a solid foundation of face to face relationships.</span></li>
528. <li><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Two-way communications must become the default form of communication</b>. Instead of one way newsletters on a PDF or hardcopy, use blogs, Google Docs, Facebook or websites that include comment sections and interactivity between home and school.</span></li>
529. <li><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Solicit ongoing data from your families.</b> Make shared decisions with parents at the table based on what is best for them. The school must meet families "where they are" with and without technology.</span></li>
530. <li><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Host a parent-teacher book chat to develop shared capacity on research-based family engagement core values</b>.
