6.

 7. Last week, my wife and I were out to dinner talking about how much we'd learned as rookie parents this year, as our little Mark is nearing 10 months old.
8.

 9. Before we had a child, as educators, we both heard over and over from parents and teachers in our respective schools that "we wouldn't understand because we weren't parents yet." -- What did this mean we asked ourselves? I think there is a way to say that to others without sounding condescending, but looking back, I do believe there is some truth to some of those words.
10.

 11. Below are 10 thoughts through the lens of a parent that I'm now bringing to school with me each day. These ideas encourage me to be a better listener for my families, my staff and help me see through multiple perspectives during certain situations.
12.
13.
14.

 15.

 16.

 17.
For my parents and teachers who get up with their infants throughout the night, then head off to work all day, you deserve a medal - what can I do to support you better?

 18.
No one will ever know your child like
 19. their parents.

 20.
Just to get the child in bed last
 21. night, up this morning and fed was incredibly exhausting. Please forgive me for forgetting to sign something.

 22.
The snack my child is eating may not
 23. be the most nutritious, but he will eat it and his/her tummy will be full. (I wish
 24. he would eat the broccoli too)

 25.
I understand this is how you did it
 26. with your child kid, but this is how we're choosing to do it with ours.

 27.
If you want my child to be actively
 28. engaged, start with learning what he/she enjoys doing when he/she is not with
 29. you.

 30.
Yes I realize my child is three months behind
 31. on this but he/she is three months ahead on that... lets focus on what he/she can do.

 32.
My child's home life is night & day from school life. Ask us how we are successful at home. Work with us.

 33.
Since our child was three months old he has
 34. been grabbing for our devices. As a teacher, please use this enthusiasm and curiosity to your advantage. Build your own capacity by learning from today's kids who already speak technology.

 35.
I love my child more than anything on
 36. this earth. Remember that each and every time you interact with my child and/or his/her
 37. family. Would you teach/talk to/talk about my child the same way if his parents were in the room?

 38.

 39.

 40. Kindergarten registration is still a ways off, but as parents we're already nervous about what his education, teachers and school will offer him to meet his needs, push his strengths and how they will welcome our support from home. One thing is for sure, we want school to be an extension of the home and vice versa. Even as a new parent, I know that will be easiest for him to flourish in life and in school. Becoming a parent has no doubt helped me to become a better educator and school leader, as well as a better person. The learning is endless.

 41.

 42.

 43.

 44. Special thanks to those in my PLN who have offered parental support over the past year to us rookie parents. We're learning so much, and parenting truly is an exciting ride. Finally, wish a special congratulations to Tom Murray and family, who just welcomed their baby boy Caden into this world.

The experience levels the playing field putting all

 283.
285.

 286.
What K-12 expectations should we have for students to read over the summer? Why?

 287.
What are the ways classroom teachers can encourage summer reading?

 288.
If parents are encouraging summer reading, what kinds of things are they most likely doing?

 289.
How can keep school libraries stay virtually open when so many are closed from June-September?

 290.
What tech tools can be used to encourage summer reading, keep logs or share literary experiences?

 291.
How can the whole family encourage summer reading? What practices would you recommend?

 292.
How can we make these summer habits the norm in students' homes?

 293.

 294.

While no longer in production, you can still find archives on YouTube. Here in 2013, TV looks a bit different with hashtags and social media connections on each show/commercial - missing from the day and age of when EdTV was still in production. Many last night couldn't help but watch and participate in the hashtag #TEDTalksEd on their own device. The TV set the backdrop for personalized sharing using social media.
311.
312. In every timezone, social media's positive dent on our field of education is felt by many. The connected educators, parents & students who helped #TEDTalksEd trend tonight realize that social media tools like Twitter and Facebook, feared at first, are now ripping down classroom and home-school walls while allowing teaching and learning to transparently take place on the part of educators, students, parents and community members.
313.
314. Here in the USA, reality TV shows are still fairly popular in many circles, but there's one area that we haven't harnessed the potential of - a channel focused on innovative teaching, learning and leadership. Ontario, Canada has a wonderful network and online platform called TVOParents, but it does not yet offer interactive opportunities that include social media during their broadcasts.
315.
316. So let's just say EdTV 2.0 returns for the start of school. Here are a few features I'd look for...
317.
318. 10 innovative ways to use EdTV 2.0
319.

 320.
The channel's free programming, available on TV and streaming live on the Internet, is selected according to the needs of students, teachers and families. These needs are different everywhere and social media offers opportunities to differentiate offerings.

 321.
All archived shows are part of an "On-Demand" option on the Internet and on cable providers offerings.

 322.
Like the #TEDTalksEd hashtag, the hashtag #EdTV is used around the world to discuss, in real-time, the programming offered.

 323.
Conversations continue well after tweets are sent, posts written and episodes shared.

 324.
Some LIVE episodes take place around timely topics according to the time of school year, with social media adding to these conversations, and expanding "voice" on what we need to teach and learn in 2013. (Sample September episode- Maximizing Back to School Night at your school)

 325.
On Tuesdays at 12EDT and 7EDT, #edchat trends on Twitter. Topics range and discussion is jam packed with resources and perspectives. What if there were social media interactive shows where they discussed thought-provoking tweets coming in and allowed others around the globe a way to participate? What if THIS was what we had on in our faculty rooms during the day?

 326.
Using hashtags like #edchat, #ptchat, #globaled, #satchat, #cpchat #elemchat #digcit #ntchat #edtechchat #sbgchat #5thchat #ellchat and others are LIVE-broadcasted during nightly chats for those who prefer the visual to he tweet, or a mixture of the two . Each of these hashtag "channels" could have their own spot and topic for discussion.

 327.
Show guests include leading researchers, gurus, parents, students, educators on a given topic. The key focus is sharing the teaching and learning happening everywhere.

 328.
For those on the way to work, local radio and Internet radio would have the audio of these professional development conversations streaming. Heard something you want to push forward on - use it as a PTA Meeting or faculty meeting starter. The key here is that the programming becomes immediately applicable to practice, much like resources found on social media are shared in schools by 140 characters of text every day.

 329.

 330.
Will Richardson says we must be bold and think about how to harness and amplify the benefits of social media in education. Connected educators sharing their craft on a daily basis inspire us to be better than we thought was our best. If we add something resembling EdTV 2.0 to the mix, we can connect the benefits of social media and meet much of our society where they still are - on TV and on the radio, making formal education and personal learning something more innovative, fun and interactive for all stakeholders, even the currently unconnected.

 331.

 332.
333.

 334.

 335. Sir Ken Robinson asks us to imagine how our collective voice can start a real movement.

 436. These are things that cross my mind each September as I get a
 437. new group of students or when a new student moves into my class in the middle
 438. of the school year. Being an educator for over 25 years, I have certainly had
 439. my share of challenging students. However, with positive reinforcement,
 440. identifying the good qualities in my students, and realizing that everyone has
 441. “stuff,” I am able to make sure that all of my students get a fair chance and a
 442. great education; which leads me to one specific student with whom I had the
 443. privilege of working this past school year.

 444.

 445.

 446.

 447. Three weeks after the school year
 448. began, a new student moved into my classroom. An African American student who
 449. began his education in an urban environment before moving to our school
 450. district, he experienced great difficulty with impulsive behaviors and bullying
 451. others, and had an extensive file documenting his behavioral difficulties. It only took me a day or two to realize
 452. the potential in this young man. He was someone, who with guidance and structure
 453. would have the ability to do great things. Academically, he was very strong and
 454. possessed many higher level thinking skills across the board. He had potential
 455. to be a strong leader, but he had difficulty relating to others and understanding
 456. his parameters.

 457.

 458.

 459.

 460. Within a week of his arrival, I met with this student’s father
 461. and discussed my expectations for my classroom and set both academic and
 462. behavior goals. The student was present at the conference as well and
 463. participated in the decision making process. I used a communication folder,
 464. which was sent home each day, to track and communicate his behaviors to his
 465. parents. Incentives were put in place, but most importantly, this student knew
 466. that I cared. He needed a positive role model, and told me that for the first
 467. time in his life he had a teacher who liked him, understood him, and believed
 468. in him.

 469.

 470.

 471.

 472. Communication with his family was very difficult because he was being
 473. pulled between two parental residences. I recommended this student to be tested
 474. for the Gifted Resource program in our school, and after months of trying to
 475. obtain a signature from his parents giving us permission to test, the student
 476. was tested and successfully qualified for the program. The day I told him the
 477. news with my principal standing by my side, he jumped up and down the hallway
 478. screaming, “Yes!” He threw his arms around me and wouldn’t let go, saying,
 479. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” As my principal and I fought back tears, I
 480. knew the impact I made on this student. I told him how proud I was of him and
 481. assured him that big things will come his way as long as he keeps his behaviors
 482. in check and maintains focus.

 483.

 484.

 485.

 486. Unfortunately, the student moved away suddenly
 487. and is no longer with me. I am hopeful that he will always remember the things
 488. that I taught him and will apply those skills to his daily life.

 489.
490.

 491.
 492. You can find Dean on Twitter as @MrCalvaresi. He is someone I'd recommend other teachers and parents follow, share with and learn from. He understands what it takes to meet students where they are, using a variety of strategies to engage them, with his main ingredient being solid teacher-student relationships. Mr. C knows his students and his families, and harnesses this knowledge in maximizing their potential throughout the school year. THIS is the kind of teacher I want for my own children.
521. This past weekend, I had the chance to return to Chicago, the city where I started my teaching career and spent my twenties living a few blocks from Wrigley Field. The Annual #ASCD13 Conference was in town, and I fortunate to have had my session idea accepted for presentation. The session focused creating a menu of tech and non-tech communication offerings for families, while keeping the research on family and community engagement in mind.
522.
523. Five things I hope attendees took away from my session:
524.
525.
526.

 527.
This work is about relationships. No tool will ever replace a real relationship between home and school that includes eye contact, tone, empathy, mutual respect and a core focus on the child. Parents need schools to build efforts from a solid foundation of face to face relationships.

 528.
Two-way communications must become the default form of communication. Instead of one way newsletters on a PDF or hardcopy, use blogs, Google Docs, Facebook or websites that include comment sections and interactivity between home and school.

 529.
Solicit ongoing data from your families. Make shared decisions with parents at the table based on what is best for them. The school must meet families "where they are" with and without technology.

 530.
Host a parent-teacher book chat to develop shared capacity on research-based family engagement core values. Recommended reading for parents, teachers, leaders: Four Core Beliefs (Beyond the Bakesale, 2007).

 531.
Become a connected educator / connected parent, and harness the power of human idea sharing from like minded people. The Twitter Personal Learning Network (PLN) is arguably the very best thing education has going for it right now. It is truly best for kids when we're able to collaborate transparently.

 532.

 533.
534. Three resources from my session
659. Today,
 660. most schools have a website. Whether the website is useful to the specific family
 661. needs at the school is the real question. Does the site serve as simply an information
 662. storage bank or does it offer two-way communication and an opportunity to build
 663. a relationship with the school? How do you know? Have parents been part of the
 664. team creating the website? Has your school considered a mobile app for parents? For us, once we collected data identifying that 63% of our families were using a mobile device to access school communications, we ventured down the road to a mobile app.
