5.

  6.

  7.
Mentor Mob or Lesson Paths An easy way to create a path to web resources on any topic. Visually attractive results too.I am pasting a Lesson Playlist created by someone on blended learning below.

  8.

  9.
10.

  11. Create your own Playlist on LessonPaths!
12.
13. 2. Blendspaces This one uses different words (create a lesson) for a similar approach (create a playlist). Equally easy to use and a little more robust in application sharing and a very nice visual result as well.
14.
  15.

  16.

Ok, so it's already possible to do that via SlideShare. But what if you want to add voice recording? Ok, ok, VoiceThread already allows that, too. But what if you don't want to record your own voice? What if you can't?
19.
20. SlideTalk provides a special solution for this issue. Users can upload their slides, add narrative text for each slide, and share a public, narrated video of their PowerPoint with text-to-voice speech technology.
21.
22. If this sounds too good to be true. wait. until. you. listen. to the. demo. video. below. Text. to-speech. technology. has come. a long. way. but it. still. leaves much. to be. desired. Imagine. listening. to. your. presentation. narrated. like an. emergency. weather. update: "During. Phase. 24.
  25.
  26.
27. Don't get me wrong -- this service could definitely be useful for a demographic of users who want to provide narrated lecture videos and lack the software necessary for recording (or are too shy to record) their own videos.
28.
29. However, people who can record their own voiceover narrations probably should do so. If the point of recording a lecture with your slides is to make them more engaging for viewers, SlideTalk unfortunately falls a bit short of this goal.
30.
38.
39.
  40.
  41.
42. I've attempted to create a test video in Popcorn maker using a video I already own and share on YouTube. A few observations:
43.

  44.
It's important that the video is already publicly online, because that's the only way to import it into the editor; there is no Upload option.

  45.
There is a bit of a learning curve for users who don't do a lot of editing. I found that I could add text, but I couldn't change the color from the default black -- there is a box to enter a number code to change the font color, but no color wheel or swatch sampler to let me pick a different color. I was able to add a shadow behind the black letters, but even so they aren't always visible against the background.

  46.
Some prior knowledge of video editing is also helpful to understanding the timeline and how to arrange layers of text and images on top of videos. This resource may not be for beginners, unless they are willing to spend some time self-instructing by experimentation.

  47.
Once I added something that I wanted to remove, the only way I could find to do this was to move the item to a new layer and then delete the layer.

  48.
Twitter option: This seems to give the option of posting a person's feed or search terms, but I couldn't get it to display either. It's possible that it displays differently after the work is saved, but I also wished that I could embed a single specific tweet rather than a feed or ticker of multiple tweets.

  49.
There doesn't seem to be a way to trim the length of videos. I was able to pause this one and then skip to the very end, but I couldn't cut the section I wanted to remove.

  50.

  51. My Popcorn maker video:
52.
53.
  54.
  55.
56.
57. All in all, it's a fun resource, but not as robust as software like Camtasia (my current favorite). It does, however, get points for adding social media content like Google Maps and Wikipedia (though Twitter is not yet as functional as the other two).

A Few Useful eLearning Resources

This past weekend at the 2012 Ubiquitous Learning conference, I attended a session by Mark A. Woolwine, who showcased several online resources for use in education. Several of them were already familiar to me, but there were just as many that were not.
58.
59. The following is a selection of resources from Woolwine's presentation, "Engaging Students with a Mosaic of Technology" that might be new and useful to eLearning instructors:
60.
61. To Share with Students --
62.
63. Cramberry - https://cramberry.net/
64. A free online flash card tool for students. Students can make their own flash cards or use ones that are already available on the side, then see their progress. The free account allows students to study 30 cards per day.
65.
66. My StudentBook - http://mystudentbook.com/
67. StudentBook is a free application to help students manage assignments, exam dates, and grades.
68.
69.
70. Time Management / Organization --
71.
72. Sandglaz - http://www.sandglaz.com/
73. This is yet another free-with-basic-options time-management app, not specific to students but more general for anyone looking to boost productivity.
74.
75. Wunderlist - http://www.wunderlist.com/
76. Another free task management app, with desktop, mobile, and web-based versions.
77.
78.
79. Concept Mapping and Collaboration --
80.
81. Concept Board - http://conceptboard.com/
82. This service allows for real-time group collaboration on concept mapping and other documents. There is a free 30-day trial, but then users need to pay an annual account fee.
83.
84. Creately - http://creately.com/
85. This is another concept mapping tool that allows users to create online diagrams, flow charts, etc. The free version has more limited options.
86.
87. LucidChart - https://www.lucidchart.com/
88. This is another concept-mapping tool that lets collaborators work on a diagram in real time. it's free for a 14-day trial and then has a monthly fee.
89.
90. Vyew - http://vyew.com/s/
91. This is another real-time collaboration platform. Users can work share documents, multimedia, etc. in a shared space. Free with limited real-time users.
92.
93.
94. Lesson Plans & Testing --
95.
96. Lesson Plan It - http://lessonplan.it/
97. This is a free online lesson plan builder.
98.
99. McScoring - http://www.mcscoring.com/
100. This is a web app that lets teachers create an online form for simple multiple choice tests. Test questions and other information will need to be provided separately, but this makes it easy for instructors to process test scores.
101.
102.
103. Visually Powerful --
104.
105. Graph.tk - http://graph.tk/
106. This
  107. is an online, open-source graphing utility, apparently. The link goes
  108. directly to a graph with a small formula box and no explanatory text.
109.
110. SlideRocket - http://www.sliderocket.com/
111. This is an impressive multimedia-rich presentation builder/social sharing platform for people who want to move beyond PowerPoint, free-with-basic-options. There is also a free iPad app.
112.
113. BioDigital Human - https://www.biodigitalhuman.com/home/
114. This application may not be terribly useful in the College of Business, but it looks cool. BioDigital Human is a 3D platform to help students understand anatomy and medicine in a virtual simulation.

Camtasia automatic captioning?
115. The issue of creating captions is something that comes up very frequently and we would like to have all videos captioned but it will take a huge amount of time. Now Camtasia offers the possibility of automatic captioning bu using the Speech-to-text feature, which automatically creates captions from voice narration or audio on the timeline. It has to be trained, and can only be used in the PC, but i think it is a good solution, if the instructor uses his / her own PC to create the mini lectures with Camtasia.
116. Here a tutorial on how to do it:
117.

UCLA decided to make it easier for all, and they have created a site that allows users to create peer reviews... Prof. Sachdev shared with me the site, and it think it deserves a closer look... some instructors may find it really useful.
123. EmbedPlus is a service that promises to
  124. enhance the way
  125. that YouTube videos display when they are embedded on a page. For users
  126. who intend to embed videos in WordPress, there is a WordPress-specific
  127. plugin that can be installed onto the blog's dashboard. For all other
  128. uses, the application on the EmbedPlus website itself walks users
  129. through the process of customizing the embedded content.

  130.

  131.

  132.

  133. I tested this out with the following video from The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a YouTube-based vlog adaptation of Pride and Prejudice:

  134.

  180.
  181.
  182.
  183.

  184.

  185.

  186.

  187. Since
  188. our eLearning Team blog is hosted by Blogspot, I used the web
  189. application of EmbedPlus. First, it asked me to enter in the video's
  190. URL. Then, I had to check whether I intended to post the code on a
  191. WordPress blog (if "yes", the page gives instructions for installing the
  192. WordPress plugin).

  193.

  194.

  195.

  196. The next step involves selecting customizable options for the embedded video:

  197.

  198.
video size

  199.
start/stop time -- which would be handy if you want viewers to skip
  200. ahead to a specific timestamp rather that viewing the entire video

  201.
scene markers -- perhaps more useful for longer videos, or important points within a lecture

  202.
real-time reactions -- which displays pop-up comments on the video from YouTube, Digg, Twitter, and Reddit

  203.
annotations -- this adds annotated notes at specific points within the video

  204.

  205.

  206.

  207.

Screenshot of the EmbedPlus Options window

  208.

  209. Of any of these functions, the scene markers and
  210. annotations might be the most useful to embedded video lectures in
  211. online courses. I doubt the usefulness of the real-time reactions
  212. option, but left it checked in the above video for curiosity's sake.
213.
214. At
  215. this time I still have not tested the WordPress plugin version of this
  216. service, and depending on how the video displays on this blog, it may or
  217. may not be worth further investigation for use in eLearning. Still, the
  218. customizable display options seem to be potentially useful. I'm looking
  219. forward to testing its functionality with real lecture recordings.
233. The plagiarism-checking company Turnitin has recently published an infographic that shows statistics for students' plagiarism of online sources.
234.
235. The graphic compares statistics for unoriginal content by both secondary and higher education students, and how those rates have grown over the past few years. Unsurprisingly, Wikipedia is among the most plagiarized sources. At the college level, however, more and more students are copying and pasting content from social media sources than anywhere else -- including the popular academic site SlideShare.
236.
237. If you are at all curious about plagiarism in higher education, this infographic is worth a glance.
Some of the most frequent requirements for students to stay in touch with their supervisor, instructor or mentor, is to maintain email communication, or to exchange notes, or to write one or several reports and/or present their experience at the end via a paper or oral presentation.
241. Are these traditional communication techniques still the best way to engage students and create a more permanent memory and reflection of the time as intern?
242.
243.

  244. In a time when social networks are an important part of every student's life, it makes sense to use one of the social networking systems available to allow peer collaboration, live or timely sharing of experiences, peer feedback and social learning.

  245.

  246. The following table presents other options that can be used to engage students when they are doing an internship. If you have other ideas about how to engage students while they are in their internships, please share them via comments in this blog.

I think it looks like a web 2.0 version of WebBoard, (remember that?).
373.
374.

  375.

  376.

  377.

  378. The system makes it easy to enroll participants, you can suggest that you only want illinois.edu accounts if your participants have your same affiliation. The instructor may enable 'anonymous' posts too. It has a unique way of handling participants' responses in the sense that it allows multiple responses or only one student answer, in which case the students edit the existing response and have to add to it. And there is a "followup" feature that can be used when responses or questions are not clear or a new thread needs to be added. Posts can also be tagged so that it is easier to find them, and formatting is very simple. I hope you find interesting uses for this platform. I will be testing it with the team and we will have some comments after our testing.

Editing or clipping YouTube Videos

I found that the following sites may be of good help for an instructor trying to clip or use part of a youTube video. The first three provide similar functionality: clipping and providing embed code for a clip in an existing youtube video. They are:
379. 1) TubeChop: http://www.tubechop.com/
380. 2)Splicd: http://www.splicd.com/
381. The last one offers more options for editing and interacting with videos. It is called "embed.plus" http://www.embedplus.com and it promises more functions than the other three....
382.
383. I tested them with this "Milonga"
384. ORIGINAL POST IN YOUTUBE:
385.

  386.

  387.
388.
389. 1) One minute edit with Tubechop
390. Example: http://www.tubechop.com/watch/318894
391. Tutorial:
392.
393.

  394.

  395.
396.
397. 2) One minute edit with Splicd
398. Example: http://splicd.com/vzPQS5xbTe4/150/210
399.
400. Submit your comments if you try them... or if you know of others.
401.
402.
403.
405.
406. The ebook is no different: there are many competing formats and (putative) standards, and every player in the market seems to have settled on a different one. This becomes even more confusing if you have more than one device which can display ebooks (e.g., an Amazon Kindle and a smart phone) or a device that can display more than one format (e.g., an iPad which can run the Kindle app as well as using Apple's own native ebook format).
407.
408. Calibre, a free and open source package, can help. Calibre organizes your ebooks into a searchable database, will display most common formats, and will even convert one format to another. It will also sync your book collection to your device, and has a nifty packaging feature that lets you convert web feeds into ebooks for later reading on your mobile device.

Transcriptions and Captions - what a headache....

Universal Subtitles claims that they have " built the easiest way to subtitle videos. Add our subtitling widget to your video (or your site) and click the "subtitle me" button. The rest is simple! Totally free, and no software to download" I saw that it is really easy to use, you select a URL, the video start playing and you start typing. It will wait if you are deleting or stopping, so that you can catch up, and then it will start after a few seconds if you are not typing, so that you can continue. It will start from a few seconds before so you can check what you just typed. Then it provides a very easy way to sync and play and re edit.
409. The design for entering text is very good and easy to use. However, (there is always a "however", when will the perfect tool be created?) there are some limitations:
410. 1- It will not take any video format, for example, it does not like .wmv
411. 2- You can edit several things but you cannot move or decide where you want the captioning text to show.
412. 3- It places the caption not at the bottom but a little above the bottom, so even if you have left some space for captioning, it will cover the text in the movie, unless you use only one line.. and even in that case it is too high for my preference.
413. The concept and the project are worth exploring further, they share their code, it is built in HTML5 and Javascript, it is web based, and let you download the script in different formats. Their tutorials are also easy to follow.
414. The Chronicle this morning has an article about them and they also talk about Scripto, another one in my list....
The system offers what most web conferencing systems have: Recording capabilities, Document sharing, screen sharing, Audio, Video (both for multiple users), whiteboard, and chat. It also provides options for document sharing such as: share in the whiteboard, download as pdf (no matter what your original format is) and download in original format. The host decides how to share the documents. This screenshot shows the conference area, with feature icons on top, whiteboard, participants list on the right, chat at the bottom, and one of the presenters' video.
It has an incredible array of features. With it, you can distribute your audio lecturecasts on your WordPress blog (complete with a fully featured and incredibly configurable media player). It can also generate the necessary RSS feed to list your audio lecturecasts on iTunes (and allow you to exert complete control over how they will look on iTunes). One of the other great added features is that Podpress allows you to visualise (via an array of cool graphs) download statistics of each lecturecast. All in all, Podpress is pretty much the only solution you'll ever need if you want to distribute audio lecturecasts (as long as you are doing so from a WordPress site, that is).
424.

a. There seems to be some redundancy of tools. What they call journals looks like blogs (except maybe private, though it can be made public).

b. There is no digest form of the email update for discussion. So you either get everything, pos by post, or you get nothing.

c. It really doesn’t want you to use external tools for communicating, though you can do it as a url.

d. While the instructor can create contacts (presumably for himself and the TAs) students don’t have an analogous capability. So they don’t seem to be able to upload a picture of themselves or provide a bio sketch.

e. Instructors have to empower everything. Students can’t do it themselves. Say a class has students working in group. The instructor has to create those groups and then enable tools for the groups. The students can’t do that on their own.

425.

So still some typical LMS issues.

426.

Lanny

Saving a document in any MS Office app will automatically update a secure web version of the document that can be shared by sending others a link. It is different from Google Docs because it allows you to edit the docs in their native app. It also creates a discussion area for each doc and keeps track of versions.
