We were sitting in his scruffy studio in the East Village, and he said he was sorry that he had failed to take legal action when the men’s wear store bearing his name opened in New York in the mid-70s. “People call here all the time asking for cashmere coats,” he said.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Stella, it can safely be said, was not a fashion plate. To the end of his life, he had the aura of a nervous whiz kid with oversize glasses and frizzy hair. He counted himself among the socially marginalized and once joked in a personal letter about “all us miscreants who drifted into the Bowery of Life, the art world.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">His great passion was abstract painting, and he began his career with a big bang. In 1959, at the advanced age of 23, he became famous overnight for his Black Paintings, with narrow stripes that extend from edge to edge of the canvas and purged abstract art of any hint of spiritual uplift. Despite their portentous titles (“Die Fahne hoch!” for instance, or “The Marriage of Reason and Squalor II”), the paintings reference nothing outside themselves. “What you see is what you see,” Stella declared, providing the Minimalist movement with a pithy and enduring slogan.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">If Stella helped spawn the Minimalist movement of the ’60s, he was also its best-known defector. In the late 1970s, he did an unrepentant flip-flop, pursuing deep space and baroque curves as fanatically as he had once eschewed them. Works such as the Museum of Modern Art’s “Giufà, la luna, i ladri e le guardie” (1984) pile metal cones and columns into a nine-foot-tall assemblage that juts off the wall. He produced, with very mixed results, a profusion of giant metal reliefs, undulating and glittery constructions sprayed with automotive paint. Some of them are hard to relate to, except as spectacle, and feel like a cross between the Bauhaus and a fun house.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Today, in our era of figuration and socially conscious painting, Stella’s 60-year devotion to abstract art might sound academic or even antediluvian. By his own admission, he did not see art as an efficient vehicle for improving society or combating injustice. “If artists want to do something useful,” he once told me, “they can be social workers or politicians. Or they can join the U.S. Army. Art does not do what a social worker does. No abstract image is going to help anyone.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“A lot of people are under the illusion that art is good therapy,” he added. “But it’s only good enough therapy for people who aren’t sick. If you’re really sick, it’s not good enough.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Stella began his career in the Eisenhower era, when art tendencies, as much as gender tendencies, were expected to fall into fixed categories. You were either an abstract artist or a figurative one. Over the decades, America changed — it opened up to both gender fluidity and genre fluidity — but Stella did not. He never stopped insisting on the inherent superiority of abstract painting. The goal of art, he finally decided, was “to create space,” by which he meant that he wanted to imbue abstract painting with the roominess — the ideal of amplitude — that had defined figurative painting since the Renaissance.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">But what kind of goal is that? Creating pictorial space? It might seem hyper-specialized and overly rarefied compared to the contemplation of timeless themes like love or nature or death. Even the writer Susan Sontag, with her formidable powers of analysis, found Stella’s mission confounding. In 1966, she noted in her diary that contemporary artists reminded her of research scientists. “Frank Stella’s work is thought to be very interesting because it is a solution to central problems,” she wrote. “Without a knowledge of recent art history + its ‘problems,’ who would be interested in Frank Stella?”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">It is true that Stella had an agenda, or what used to be called a vision, that appealed to the partisans of abstraction. In 1970, when the Museum of Modern Art honored him with the first of two retrospectives, he was apotheosized as the defining artist of his generation precisely because he validated the then-dominant view of modern art as focusing exclusively on form, shape and color and eliminating literary “meaning.” Unlike his colleague Andy Warhol, whose use of photography and photo-silk-screening was initially regarded as a fad that would pass (LOL), Stella legitimized the then-popular view that painting since Cézanne had been a march toward flatness.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Stella was exciting to me because he made high art feel like a high-I.Q. adventure. In contrast to Jackson Pollock, who didn’t attend college and mesmerized the world with his tossed and flung ribbons of paint, Stella offered a model of the artist as a Brainiac with a ruler and a compass. Fittingly, his first wife was Barbara Rose, the critic and art historian, who died in 2020. They were equals in brilliance, though their marriage did not endure beyond the ’60s. Stella made “brief and weak attempts at contact,” Rose lamented in her diary in 1964. “No real wish to see my tears or hear my story.” Fortunately, Stella forged a more lasting union in his second marriage, to Harriet McGurk, a pediatrician, who survives him.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Stella cultivated an image of a man who was always ahead of the pack, an alpha male who could outrun you. He collected racehorses, drove fast cars, competed at squash. He published a geniusy book, “Working Space,” an academic best seller that still entertains with its erudite art gab and its hot takes on the work of Annibale Carracci, Caravaggio and other 16th-century masters. Caravaggio, by the way, died at 38, which was apparently fine with Stella, who was fond of saying that no artist needs to live past 40. The implication was that artists have their best ideas when they are young, and the rest of life is barely worth sticking around for.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Still, Stella worked with a sustained intensity to the end. It’s telling that he currently has two shows of recent (large-to-whopping-size) work on view in galleries in New York, one at Yares Art, the other at Jeffrey Deitch.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">During the pandemic, when he was cut off from the assistants and fabricators on whom he had relied for years, he found a new way to occupy himself. He took to making quickie collages with scraps he found around the house. “A collage a day keeps the Corona del Mar virus away,” he joked in writing to an artist-friend, Dennis Ashbaugh, who was surprised to receive a collage in the mail as a gift. Curiously, the collage had been assembled from little bits of aluminum foil, brown cigar paper and cut-up images that had been stapled in place rather than glued, revealing Stella’s impressive disregard of conventional beauty. Who has time to wait for glue to dry anyhow? And perhaps staples are not so ugly after all.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><h2 class="css-kypbrf eoo0vm40" id="link-653e534d">Defining a Brave New World</h2><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Born in Malden, Mass., in 1936, the son of a doctor, Stella attended boarding school at Phillips Academy before heading off to Princeton University. At college he majored in medieval history, and his lack of art-school training is evident in his art. Indifferent to the tradition of academic drawing, he created an art that rejected manual facility in favor of a brave new world of geometric progressions and a prescient devotion to computer design.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">In 1959, his Black Paintings were unveiled at the now-historic “Sixteen Americans” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. To viewers who had finally warmed to the wide, whooshing brushwork of de Kooning and the Abstract Expressionists, Stella’s canvases represented a direct assault on gestural painting, implying that expressionism and even human suffering had lost their allure as subjects for art.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">In explaining the origins of his Black Paintings, Stella always cited Jasper Johns’s paintings of the American flag, which come with official red and white stripes and a predetermined structure. Johns found a lifelong supporter in Stella, who had eked out a living as a house painter before he was famous and, in 1961, kindly painted the interior of Johns’s newly acquired beach house in Edisto, S.C. In 2021, in a slightly more polished acknowledgment of their friendship, Stella installed a monumental aluminum sculpture, “Jasper’s Split Star,” at 7 World Trade Center.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Which are Stella’s best paintings and sculptures? For now, there is no critical consensus on the high points or the low points in his enormous oeuvre, beyond agreement that the Black Paintings guarantee him a forever-place in art-history textbooks. He certainly excelled at printmaking, an arena in which his own rush to innovation was productively countered by the medium’s technical demands.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">There is much to recommend his more restrained works from the 1960s — the softly warming Copper Paintings, or the arching stripes in his Protractor series, or his Irregular Polygons, such as “Sanbornville II” (Whitney Museum), in which triangles of bright color push into the sides of squares to create a lopsided but charismatic family. They are crisp and lucid and breathe visual oomph into geometry.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Although Stella liked to insist that his paintings connected to nothing outside their material selves, this is simply untrue. He let in more humanistic meaning than he cared to acknowledge. My own favorite Stellas belong to his Polish Village series, 130-plus large-scale constructions in which angular, interlocking strips of wood suggest the tradition of patient carpentry. Their titles (e.g., “Chodorow,” “Zabludow”) refer to the names of Polish villages where centuries-old, wooden-beam synagogues were destroyed by Hitler and his hacks during World War II. Stella told me he had first become fascinated by the subject when his friend Richard Meier, the architect, gave him a book of photographs titled “Wooden Synagogues.” Although Stella was not Jewish — he grew up in a Catholic, Italian American home — his Polish Village constructions seem touched by a vulnerability that is absent from his other work; they capture the fragility of the built-by-hand world.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">He also strove for moral largeness in his Moby Dick series. It consumed him from 1985 to 1997 and constitutes 226 works dedicated to the 135 chapters in Herman Melville’s epic novel. The paintings and sculptures loosely evoke seafaring imagery, with rising wave shapes and a sense of swirling movement. The wall reliefs tend to blur together in the mind, perhaps because they are more about overall momentum than sensual surfaces, although their connection to Melville adds a layer of intrigue.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Stella said he had decided to reread “Moby Dick” after a wave shape materialized in his work, and also after watching a whale with his sons in an aquarium. He owned a summer house on the coast of Massachusetts, not far from Nantucket, from where the Pequod initially sailed, and from where Captain Ahab began his doomed quest to destroy the white whale that had chomped off his leg, an obsession that would finally sink the ship and destroy its crew.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Stella, too, was consumed by an obsession: the fate of abstract art. Why was he so devoted to it? He found it mystifying, he said, that Picasso had never embraced pure abstraction. Even at the height of Cubism, which he invented, Picasso always included traces of common objects in his work — a pipe, a hat, a newspaper headline, as if unwilling to lose his last tether to recognizable reality.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Stella wanted to continue where Picasso had left off and show that abstract painting could have the fullness — the satisfying tactility — of the real world. He brought to the effort the combined force of his quick intelligence and singular audacity. For much of that time we thought that he was just advancing an agenda. After making it to the hometown dates, the bridal stylist was sent packing. While Lowe ended up marrying winner <strong>Catherine Giudici</strong>, Hartsock was named the ninth Bachelorette. During the season, Hartsock was briefly left heartbroken when <strong>Brooks Forester</strong> quit the show after making the final three.</p><p>The designer subsequently accepted a proposal from Siegfried during the August 2013 finale.</p><p>“I feel like I was blindsided by my feelings for Brooks, that I couldn’t see that the one thing I always needed was right in front of me,” Hartsock told Siegfried during the final rose ceremony. “You have been by my side from the very beginning … I thank you every day for never giving up. Weekend performances at a festival-like venue near the racetrack included the Puerto Rican rapper Don Omar and the Miami-born D.J. Steve Aoki.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The attempt to distinguish the race also includes visual artists. The Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra, whose work has been featured at Art Basel, painted a mural near the track.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“I think Tom’s vision is a really important one because this mixture between sport and art is the DNA of Miami,” Kobra said in Portuguese through an interpreter. “That’s how it’s related, and it helps us to capture the hearts and minds of the young people in the city.”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Enlisting musicians and entertainers connected to a major event’s host region is a common strategy among sports leagues. When the Super Bowl was in Inglewood, Calif., in 2022, the halftime show featured the Los Angeles rappers Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">In November, Donny Osmond sang the national anthem at Las Vegas’s Formula 1 race, and at the race that has been held in Austin, Texas, since 2012, organizers have used local bands to complement the headliners.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“Having those local artists makes such a big difference because there’s a draw from the community<em class="css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0">,” </em>said Sharifa Wilkinson, a professor at Florida International University who helped plan aspects of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. “You’re speaking to not only an international audience, but the audience that’s there and you’re fulfilling a part of your target market’s needs.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Not all musical acts at the Miami Grand Prix have local connections. The English pop star Ed Sheeran and the EDM artist Kaskade, who grew up in Chicago, also performed during the weekend.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Formula 1 primarily races in Europe and the Middle East but has captured a nascent American fan base with help from six seasons of the Netflix docuseries “Formula 1: Drive to Survive.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Despite logistical challenges, including clogged traffic because of road closures, Las Vegas Grand Prix officials said more than 300,000 fans attended their inaugural race. About 270,000 people went to last year’s Miami Grand Prix, including celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Serena Williams.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Kaytranada said he was not a Formula 1 fan but chose to perform this year because of how much he enjoyed attending the first Miami race in 2022. A limousine would not do, nor would an SUV — walking in the dress was a challenge; sitting, impossible. The solution: Ms. Jenner would be driven, standing, in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">On the way to the event, as a way to relieve her anxiety about running late, Ms. Jenner relieved herself in an ice bucket while standing in the van. “Best decision I ever made,” she said of that moment in an episode of “The Kardashians” on Hulu.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The Sprinter van, a towering box on wheels with nearly six-and-a-half feet of head room, is a direct descendant of the earliest motorized caravans developed by Karl Benz in 1896. (Some 30 years later, he and Gottlieb Daimler founded the Mercedes-Benz company.) The Sprinter, first released in Europe in 1995, started being sold domestically in 2010. Last year, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an electric version.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The van — which can be used to transport up to 15 passengers (or cargo) — is appreciated by automotive enthusiasts for its build quality, reliability and versatility, as well as for the thrust and longevity of the diesel engine in most versions.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">But other people have come to recognize the Sprinter for different reasons, among them its proximity to celebrities. The van has become a preferred mode of transportation for actors, singers, athletes and “Real Housewives,” and is now a staple in streets outside star-studded events like the Oscars and the Met Gala.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The vans have become so popular as transportation to the spring gala in New York that demand for them can outstrip the local supply. “Sprinters are being brought in from Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami,” said Etienne Haro, the general manager of the Mark Hotel on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where many Met Gala guests spend time both before and after the main event.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">In recent years, between 50 and 70 guests have traveled to the gala from the Mark, with about 40to 50 of those people riding in Sprinters. Many of those vans are rented and driven by guests’ personal chauffeurs. On the day of the gala, the Mark has a team of about 30 people tracking vehicles’ locations to ensure their passengers arrive punctually, Mr. Haro said.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Sprinter riders often take advantage of the van’s roomy interior to ensure they also arrive looking flawless. “The entourage, glam team, stylist — everyone can hop in to put on the finishing touches,” Mr. Haro said.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">But occasionally, he added, some Sprinter passengers have hit bumps in the road on their way to and from the gala.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“Getting out of a Sprinter with a voluminous gown and high heels can be challenging,” Mr. Haro said, noting one instance in which a Mark employee caught a Met Gala guest “in midair” as she was falling out of a van. He recalled another guest “whose dress was so intricate that she could not enter her vehicle.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Though it bears Mercedes-Benz’s three-point-star logo, the Sprinter has an otherwise innocuous exterior that, for some famous fans, has as much appeal as its capacious interior.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“Our clients say, ‘The paparazzi are chasing us around; we don’t want to be in something that’s sticking out like a sore thumb, like a Rolls or a Bentley,” said Howard Becker, the founder of Becker Automotive Design in Southern California, which has customized Sprinter vans and other vehicles for people like the director Steven Spielberg, the actor Mark Wahlberg and the television host Steve Harvey.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“The Sprinter kind of fades in,” said Mr. Becker, 75.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The starting price for a diesel-engine van is about $50,000; electric Sprinters start at about $72,000. But models outfitted by Mr. Becker or by Gabi Mashal, whose Southern California company Bespoke Coach also customizes the vans, typically cost between $350,000 and $450,000.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Their distinctive features can include temperature-controlled, lie-flat seats with built-in massagers, secure internet routers, state-of-the-art stereo and video systems and onboard bathrooms for their owners.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“These people can’t use a public restroom,” said Mr. Mashal, 60, who has customized vans for the singer Mark Anthony and the boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The Sprinter’s size and luxurious reputation are reasons it has replaced vehicles like limousines and SUVs as the rental transportation of choice on many versions of “The Real Housewives,” said Nate Green, an executive producer of “The Real Housewives of Miami.” He described the Sprinter as a friend of the “Housewives,” using a term given to supporting characters in the franchise who appear regularly in episodes.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Mr. Green said his show’s crew also favors Sprinters because the van’s cabin has enough room for camera operators to stand — and to film from several angles.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“This is really important,” Mr. Green said, “because ‘Housewives’ is sometimes more about the reaction than about the actual dialogue.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Throughout the reality TV franchise’s 18 years on Bravo, Sprinter vans have been a place where housewives have drunkenly fallen down, signed divorce papers, passionately kissed co-stars, engaged in verbal spats and been approached by officers with the Department of Homeland Security.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“When people see a Sprinter van, they know that there’s going to be something that happens that’s going to be iconic,” said Lisa Shannon, an executive producer of the New York and Salt Lake City installments of “The Real Housewives,” as well as its “Ultimate Girls Trip” spinoff.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The Sprinter, while strongly associated with the “Housewives” franchise, has appeared in more than 4,000 movies and TV episodes. Like many tokens of pop culture, it has been imitated on “The Simpsons,” and it recently joined one of cinema’s most distinguishable automotive fleets: the vehicles in “Ghostbusters.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">In the series’s latest film, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” released in March, a new van called Ecto-Z — a black Sprinter outfitted with racks for proton packs — is featured alongside the tail-finned 1959 Cadillac ambulance known to many as the Ecto-1.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Eric Reich, an executive producer of “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” said a Sprinter was chosen for the Ecto-Z role after Mercedes-Benz and Sony, the film’s distributor, had meetings to discuss product placement. He added that a Sprinter, like a Cadillac, made sense for transporting the Ghostbusters and their gear because both vehicles blend “luxury and function.”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">That amalgamation has also made Sprinters popular among so-called vanlifers — people known for cavorting, traveling and sleeping in customized vans. Many of them document their lifestyles online, including Peter Holcombe, 51, who has spent much of the last decade living with his wife, Kathy, 50, and daughter, Abby, 19, in four Sprinter vans outfitted by the motor-home company Winnebago. (The Holcombes are brand ambassadors for Mercedes-Benz and Winnebago; they bought three of their vans at a discount.)</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">In their vans, the family has visited all 50 states, several national parks and 19 European countries. (Last year, Abby moved out of the family vehicle and into one of her own.) The Holcombes are currently driving what’s known as the Pan-American Highway, a network of roads that runs from Alaska to the southern tip of South America.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“We’ve done over 400,000 miles in Sprinters,” Mr. Holcombe said.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Wes Siler, a backcountry camper and a columnist for Outside magazine in Bozeman, Mont., is less of a fan.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Mr. Siler, 43, who camps out of a converted pickup truck, said the cost of buying and customizing a Sprinter for outdoor exploring is excessive for what he described as little more than a “poseur backdrop.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“They’re cool on Instagram,” he said. “That’s, like, the entire story.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">But even Mr. Siler, who grew up in Europe, recognizes that the van has a certain appeal.
