36.
But How Do They Stack Up Against Grey Market Delivery Services?

 37.
Not well, but they’re doing their best.

 38.
As part of the response to the most recent wave of the ongoing pandemic, Canadian dispensaries have been allowed to offer home delivery to clients for a limited time. This is actually the second time they’ve been allowed to do so since the lockdowns first began, but there was a reprieve over the holidays when we were briefly in between disasters.

 39.
That’s enough pandemic talk for now, though, I wrote enough about that in another of my recent posts.

 40.
Long story short, the government opened the doors for our province’s legal dispensaries to offer what the grey market has offered every day, since long before the dawn of time. Unless you had a dealer that would make you walk to theirs, of course, then it’s simply not happening- ever. Just drop it, alright? Who doesn’t want a hit from the nastiest bong in existence while you’re waiting for your guy to weigh it out over a pizza box that’s been there for a month.

 41.
Is that relatable? I long for a world where it isn’t.

 48.
Why Is Legal Cannabis Embracing Delivery Now?

 49.
I don’t think I’ll rattle any cages when I suggest that the ongoing pandemic made life fairly difficult for everyone, and in a lot of ways, small businesses were probably among the hardest hit. Most Ontario dispensaries, aside from the big names, fall into that category- they’re small retail businesses, and most of them operate out of a single location.

 50.
Not to mention that a lot of them were opening at the same time. Late last year, in September, it was widely reported that Ontario alone had seen the opening of over 1,000 licensed dispensaries since cannabis was legalized. So many retail outlets opened in a short span of time that the competition to stay open and provide unique offerings proved difficult for most. It became a lot more difficult once lockdowns started, and most newer stores hadn’t built up enough of a customer base to survive.

 51.
Not wanting to discourage those who waited through the long, chaotic process of becoming licensed retailers of cannabis, the government had to ensure that their stores could compete. I can only imagine that, prior to the government allowing licensed retailers to make direct deliveries, that the grey market saw a sizeable increase in profits from people who wanted to order and pay for their cannabis with minimal human interaction.

 52.
It was the safer option at the time, regardless of how legal it may not have been!

 53.
With internal competition between licensed retailers being so fierce, the solution had to be one that benefitted all dispensaries as equally as possible- We hardly need an accusation of our fine provincial government as being the type to play favorites, now, do we?

 54.
Delivery service was intended as a stop-gap, that local dispensaries could use to stay afloat through an uncertain time. Things changed, however, once their clientele became accustomed to the perks of home delivery.

 61.
The Changes Keep On Coming

 62.
Even as I’m writing this, the scoop is still developing.

 63.
In October of last year, a number of changes to the legislation governing the sale of cannabis within Ontario were proposed by the provincial government. One of the suggested changes was to allow licensed dispensaries to offer home delivery, even after lockdown measures are eventually reduced and brought to an end.

 64.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see local dispensaries listed on all the delivery apps, if it happens.

 65.
Currently, dispensaries have temporary authorization to deliver under the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act, which was passed in 2020. The legislation concerns a number of industries, not only cannabis, and is considered an integral part of the province’s emergency response to the ongoing situation.

 66.
Still, once the emergency subsides, the act will likely be repealed. When ever it happens, the boost in morale it would cause is too much to pass up. There would really be no better way to tell the country that the threat is passed- that the emergency is over.

 67.

 72.

 73.
Will It Really Happen, Though?

 74.
I wouldn’t be surprised.

 75.
With bigger players trying to get into legal cannabis, the ones that can afford to home deliver cannabis within a reasonable time frame are likely to come out ahead. Especially the likes of massive companies like Shopper’s Drug Mart, backed by distribution chains beyond what any local shop could offer.

 76.
Though allowing home delivery appears to be a benefit for smaller retail stores, I think that in time, it might lead to big entities having the power to take over markets more easily. It’s a lot less difficult to expand your delivery area when you already have distribution centres all across the country!

 77.
That’s not a power the majority of legal cannabis outlets have access to.

 78.
All in all, I doubt that opening the legislation to allow for home delivery will do more harm than good to the majority of small canna-businesses.

 79.
The customers who choose to buy grey market cannabis won’t flip for home delivery- most of them get it already, and a lucky few get free delivery from their service of choice.

 80.
Allowing legal retailers to offer home delivery just opens up another way that they have to compete with the grey market- and I don’t think most will have the means to outperform the people who have been in the business for years!

 81.
If you want it delivered, you’re not gonna beat the grey market for price OR convenience.

 130.
Seriously, there’s a wealth of information out there on the stuff. The past few years have seen a meteoric rise in the popularity of CBD extracts and isolates, which in turn has led to lots of research on the subject and a lot of media attention on what once was just a younger, less impressive sibling of the real king: THC.

 131.
In recent years, however, there’s been a dynastic shift within the world of cannabis.

 132.

 138.
What Do You Mean By Dynastic?

 139.
You know, like having to do with a dynasty. I called THC the king, so it was a dynastic sh- you know what, never mind. It isn’t worth explaining. There’s been a big change.

 140.
In my previous post, I outlined a few of the reasons for CBD seemingly popping up everywhere. Basically, it boils down to the willingness of big websites and social media platforms to advertise CBD. Long story short, big businesses like CBD but not THC. Mostly because THC isn’t kid-friendly. I know that’s a gross oversimplification, but if you want more information you can always read my other post!

 141.
THC, the King, has been unseated. If you search for articles and posts about cannabis, you’ll quickly find that information and new research about CBD is far more prevalent than studies, posts, and articles about the substance that was once considered the root of the cannabis experience.

 142.
Part of this shift might also be due to fatigue: early cannabis legislation often focused on the THC content of different strains, as they were still comparing THC content to alcohol content in spirits. Unfortunately, THC content isn’t always the best indicator of a strain’s potency. I’ve been knocked on my ass by strains with little to no THC, and I’ve smoked 30% strains that barely made me feel a thing. Early legislation, and as a result, the early marketing of legal cannabis products was often most concerned with their THC content, despite it being an objectively bad measure of overall quality.

 154.

 155.
It’s Been A While Since Legalization, Though

 156.
The laws haven’t changed, so the patterns that emerged immediately after federal legalization have continued since that time. Until big companies and advertisers change their mind about THC, the only solution for cannabis companies desperate to market themselves is to focus entirely on CBD products. It would require major changes to either federal law, or to the Terms of Service of at least a dozen major web platforms to see meaningful change in this trend. Until we see those changes come about, I think the post-legalization paradigm still fits our current situation.

 157.
So CBD is big! It’ll keep being big until a lot of powerful people make a lot of big decisions, which probably won’t happen anytime soon. I think I’ve spent quite enough time describing the political and legal issues that surround the use of CBD, so now I’d like to focus more on why it has to be this way.

 178.
So you shall!

 179.
I think the main appeal of CBD is this: cannabis has an array of awesome health effects that have allowed your average citizen to treat whatever chronic health conditions they might have that modern medicine has given up on. People want that power.

 180.
 181.

 186.
People want the power to relieve their pain, to temper their anxiety, to put themselves to sleep, and even to keep them from shaking or convulsing. People want relief from symptoms, and I think I’m good to claim that with impunity. I highly doubt that anyone is gonna roll up here to argue that although they suffer from chronic pain, that they would rather live with it. If there’s another choice, most people will take it.

 187.
Unless, that is, that choice comes with its own array of side-effects. Like any medication, cannabis is not without a laundry list of undesirable side-effects. Not everyone enjoys the munchies, and not everyone who uses cannabis wants to be locked to their couch after smoking. People who smoke for pain relief don’t want to fall asleep, because they’ll wake up feeling sore again! People who smoke to reduce their convulsions might not want the munchies, because the act of eating might affect their blood sugar. Anyone with long-term health concerns can tell you that at times, trying to find the proper medication can take months or even years.

 188.
CBD offers a tempting solution for those who might be burnt out trying medication after medication. The pitch is effectively this: “Hey- We know that cannabis has lots of side-effects that no one wants, so we took those out. That also makes the good effects a little weaker, but we tried our best.” The buzz around CBD, for me, is largely centered on the marketing surrounding it being so focused on the concept of reducing side-effects.

 189.
What I’ve noticed is this: THC has become a sort of de facto measurement of potency, and is currently being marketed by legal and illegal services alike as being correlated with the power or intensity of different strains of cannabis. The focus of the marketing is on the positive effects of THC, namely, the effects that it has on the user. To balance that, the marketing surrounding CBD is focused on its negative effects. In this context, a negative effect is one that CBD would lack but one that THC is known to have.

 190.
CBD is being marketed as ‘Anti-Weed’, in a sense, by constantly comparing what it doesn’t do to how a strain with higher THC might act. It’s being used to capture a new audience that’s been historically resistant to traditional cannabis flower. The focus of the marketing is never on effects unique to CBD, but rather on effects of THC that CBD solutions lack.

 203.
You Really Put Some Thought Into That

 204.
You’re damn right!

 205.
I think that CBD has been a useful tool for cannabis companies trying to reach a new audience. Most services, once they’ve been running for a while, naturally reach a peak exposure to their audience. After that, the only way to grow is to expand that audience, either in terms of your physical operation or in terms of product lines available. CBD has allowed businesses that might’ve reached their peak with their existing audience, the customers who like to smoke and that enjoy the side-effects of THC, to reach a brand-new audience and keep on growing. That’s what most business owners want to do, and CBD allowed a lot of them to do just that with minimal effort on their part. Sounds like a win/win to me.

 206.
CBD is still a bit of a buzzword in the industry, but at least I hope it’s clear now why that is. CBD is a low-effort way for business owners to expand into new markets, and that’s exactly what people have wanted to do since cannabis was legalized a few years back. It might not be the most creative way to grow, but by now it’s tried and true. The market has responded well to CBD, and no one is trying to fix what ain’t broken. The current marketing has led most CBD products to sell like hotcakes, so expect to see a lot more ads for CBD as we move forward.

 207.
There’s still so much to talk about regarding CBD- I was really hoping to touch on The Entourage Effect in this post, but that might just have to wait. I guess we’re doing CBD part 3 before the year is out! Look forward to it…

 244.
Looks like we’re in for a bit of a shake-up when it comes to online canna-business!

 245.
For the past few years, at least, one of the major obstacles for newer canna-businesses has been the question of how to approach the realm of social media. Historically, the major social media platforms have been resistant to host cannabis content, and typically reject submitted advertisements for cannabis and related products from appearing on their websites.

 257.

 258.
As for why they do that, the answer is fairly simple. Social media platforms make a lot of their money from ad revenue, and most social media websites make ad revenue from hundreds if not thousands of small companies looking to grow their customer base. Many of those companies sell products for children, or services aimed at people who have moral or religious objections to the use and/or legalization of cannabis in North America.

 259.
When those companies see their advertisements right beside a big ol’ weed leaf, they tend to make a fuss and threaten to pull their own ads from the site. The problem that creates for budding cannabis companies is this: that other companies have been there longer, paid more in the past for ads, and still outnumber the amount of cannabis companies trying to publish advertisements through those platforms. When they threaten to pull their ads unless the cannabis content is removed, the cannabis content will always get removed. Because the platforms running the ads make more money on the other stuff!

 260.
As much as it makes sense from a financial standpoint, many see the social media component as one of the toughest hurdles for new canna-businesses to overcome. How do you let people know about your business and create new customers when you can’t post about your business online? Word of mouth and traditional marketing can only go so far in the worldwide economy. Locally, you might attract attention, but for most that won’t be enough to break even. Most cannabis companies can’t even run a social media page of their own, even one that’s set to private and lacks any content that could be seen as solicitation. Many of these companies have pages taken down that never mention ‘weed’ or ‘cannabis’ at all.

 288.
Even major dispensaries and legal cannabis entities are regularly forced to recreate their social media presence from scratch every couple of months. It happens all the time, and reaching out to the platform in question rarely solves the problem.

 289.
This problem is largely one of moderation. What one person looks at and considers ‘fine’ for their website, another moderator might look at and see as ‘explicit content’. As a result, many cannabis companies currently have active pages advertising product for sale, even though their doing so is explicitly against their hosting website’s terms of service. Most of these get taken down in time, once someone else reviews the page because of a report, or due to significant changes in traffic. However, some are allowed to stay up for months or even years despite flagrantly breaking the rules of the website their pages are hosted on.

 296.
So, What Changed?

 297.
There have been no changes to Facebook or Instagram’s Terms of Use documents since late last year (they were altered in October and December, respectively). None of the new changes were specifically related to explicit content, though, or to content that might encourage or solicit the sale and use of controlled substances. However, that doesn’t mean NOTHING has changed since then.

 298.
Since the beginning of 2021, a number of public social media accounts for various legal dispensaries have been allowed to stay online, despite being in breach of those websites’ Terms of Use. One of the most recent offenders is Orillia-based Rama Cannabis, which is owned by the same entity that operates Casino-Rama (also in Orillia). Rama Cannabis has active social media pages on both Facebook and Instagram, both of which are in apparent breach of those websites’ Terms of Use.

 299.
On their Facebook page alone, Rama Cannabis has:

 300.

 301.
Uploaded pictures and posts about various offers and sales

 302.
Advertised their grand reopening (and the in-store deals to take place on that day)

 303.
Solicited sales of a specific cannabis product offered by their store

 304.
Directed viewers to a separate storefront in order to purchase product

 305.

 306.
Any one of those four points ALONE would be enough for any other legal cannabis-related business to have their pages closed and their accounts deleted. This begs the question: Why is Rama Cannabis allowed to advertise their goods and services when other similar businesses can’t?

 318.

 319.
Are They Doing Something Different?

 320.
No, and that’s the problem! After going through the social media pages for Rama Cannabis, I can’t find any indication that they’re doing anything differently from the hundreds, if not thousands of other sites trying to run a cannabis-related business page on social media.

 321.
Most other pages that remain online for similar lengths of time to Rama Cannabis have done so by converting to ‘lifestyle pages,’ that never explicitly encourage sales or direct users to purchase the products or services pictured or posted about. This allows some companies to at least have a presence on social media, even if they’re forbidden from selling anything through the platform. Even then, these pages tend to be taken down quickly. There’s a distinct air from both Instagram and Facebook that they don’t want cannabis-related content on their platform whatsoever.

 322.
That only further begs the question, though: why Rama Cannabis? Why now?

 323.
Before I go any further, I’d quickly like to say that none of the fault for this should fall on Rama Cannabis, their owners, or employees. For whatever reason, Instagram and Facebook have selected them to be among the first cannabis companies to operate a corporate page on their platforms for the specific purposes of marketing and driving sales. I don’t know why that is, so any further discussion on the subject should be seen as hypothetical. From the outside looking in, there’s nothing about Rama Cannabis that differentiates them from any of the countless other cannabis companies trying to run a social media page for their business. As I pointed out before, however, it’s the fact that they’re no different from the others that makes all of this a problem.

 335.

 336.
Why Does This Matter?

 337.
It matters because the playing field of social media is no longer a level one.

 338.
Functionally equivalent companies deserve an equivalent chance to play ball. If one company can advertise their services and products on a platform, then they all should be allowed to. Otherwise, Facebook and Instagram have to provide an answer as to what makes Rama Cannabis different from any other weed delivery service? I looked pretty hard for that answer myself, and honestly, I couldn’t find it. If they’re doing something different, then it isn’t something obvious or visible. If the major platforms are OK with what they’re doing, but not OK with what so many other companies are doing, then it falls upon the social media platforms themselves to say why. So far, they haven’t.

 339.
That would be information that a lot of people want to know, after all. It should be public information, given the public nature of the platforms in question. Facebook and Instagram don’t have the power to decide which pages have to play by the rules and which ones don’t.

 340.
If Rama Cannabis’ social media presence isn’t problematic in its current form, then Facebook and Instagram need to say why. If they can’t say why, their Terms of Use will need to be altered accordingly. If that doesn’t happen, we’re effectively allowing them to choose the next potential market leader in the world of online cannabis.

 341.
I, for one, would rather have that choice be made by customers than faceless corporations.

 399.
What Changed?

 400.
Since the federal legalization of cannabis in Canada, edible products have really come into the fore as a force to be reckoned with. Some Canadians expressed that they were hesitant to smoke, even after doing so was legal, but many of those people were quite willing to try edible products. Some cited health concerns regarding smoke, while others expressed that they never enjoyed the taste or smell of marijuana when they’d smoked it in the past. With edibles, though, all those worries are things of the past! Edibles can be whatever flavour you imagine, and no matter how many you eat they won’t mess with your lungs.

 401.
One related factor that might have contributed to the swift growth of the edibles industry could be the increase in usage of THC distillate. Prior to legalization, this was not the sort of stuff that would be simple for your average joe to get a hold of. Nowadays, it’s typically found on a shelf! Widespread availability of distillate and other THC extracts and by-products has allowed for more frequent experimentation, which in turn has produced some delicious results.

 402.
THC distillates are simple to infuse in liquids, gummies, hard candies, and even Mac ‘n’ Cheese. High-end chefs have been experimenting with the likes of THC glazes for steaks, and the first edible restaurant was opened in 2019 (in the States). Edible products have swiftly evolved from the preference of those who would rather not smoke to a burgeoning field of cuisine in a very short time.

 403.
The move to distillate from more traditional edible recipes, which typically relied on baking THC or cannabinoids into oils or butter, has also helped to mask the taste of cannabis that many find unappetizing. Even if you don’t much like the taste or smell of cannabis, the modern world of edibles has lots to offer! If you’re a chocoholic, there are lots of premium chocolate bars chalk full of marijuana on the market. If you’re a gummy guy, then you’ve got access to every fruit flavour there is! Never mind a few that don’t exist in nature, but are still delicious in their own right.

 416.
Why Should I Care?

 417.
As the Canadian cannabis industry continues to evolve, it’s looking more like edibles will be a key deciding factor in which companies come out on top. New edibles can be exciting, as they open up new opportunities to market cannabis products to consumers who enjoy the act of eating food, as well as those who might be wary of the health effects of smoking regularly. Evidently, polling would suggest that the majority of people like to eat. Plus, who wouldn’t want to try a THC-infused fruit smoothie?

 418.
Never mind a smoothie, I don’t know too many people who would turn their nose up at a cannabis-infused pint of beer. Edible (or drinkable, in this case) cannabis products have potential for cross-marketing with companies who want to take advantage of the growing industry. Molson Coors and Steam Whistle have both expressed an interest in pursuing the creation of a cannabis-infused product within the past two years, and whoever is the first to make that happen stands to make a pretty penny.

 419.
Really, I’m just saying that if Taco Bell announced tomorrow that they were releasing a THC-infused gordita wrapped in a Doritos shell, that I’d be first in line to get it. Given the way things are going with edibles, I hope that someone over there can help make my dream a reality.

 432.
How Can I Get Into Edibles?

 433.
Well, unless you’re in Quebec or a state that hasn’t yet legalized cannabis, it’s fairly easy! In Ontario, licensed dispensaries are permitted to carry and sell a wide variety of edible cannabis products. They’re fairly limited in terms of dosage, so if you’re looking for something a little more potent, you might have to brave the grey market of cannabis. If you’ve never tried an edible before, however, it would probably be best to start with legal ones.

 434.
As much as I typically like to avoid comparisons to alcohol, comparing edibles to drinking is a bit more apt than a comparison to smoking flower. When it comes to edible cannabis products, dosage control really goes a long way. If we consider smoking flower comparable to drinking a beer, then eating edibles is more like drinking liquor. You can still do it responsibly, but it’s a bit more difficult. A tiny piece of even a small edible can go a long way, and leave you feeling down for hours. No one wants that, much like most people don’t drink to get blackout.

 435.
Some do, of course, and there are lots of options for those people, too. Such is the beauty of the modern market! If the stores around you don’t have access to the products you prefer, there are at least a dozen more that do within walkable distance. There are so many options when it comes to cannabis right now, if you’re willing to look for it. Even smaller weed delivery services will typically have access to multiple lines of edible products to compliment their more traditional offerings.

 436.
If all this talk has left you craving edibles, or feeling just a bit experimental, take a look at a few of the edible options available from Farmer’s Link. You won’t be disappointed!

 466.
Embrace The Grey

 467.
We’re 3 years out on federal legalization here in Canada, and there have been a lot of changes to the atmosphere surrounding cannabis during that time. This past year alone has seen a significant shift in terms of how we smoke, where we can smoke, and who (if anyone) we share our weed with. The pandemic saw Canadian dispensaries rake in a record share of capital as citizens of this fair nation were instructed to remain indoors, doubly so throughout Ontario once they were able to provide delivery services across large swaths of the province.

 480.
As much as the legal cannabis market has thrived this past year, though, the so-called grey market appears to be quietly outperforming the licensed side of the industry. While actual figures are hard to come by when it comes to that side of the business, as a consumer it’s hard not to notice the countless new services opening up across town with little more than a used Subaru, a WordPress website, and a dream they had after ingesting an edible.

 481.
It ain’t much, but it’s apparently enough to make some decent money. Given how hard it is to get a license from the government to buy and sell the products they approve, most budding dispensaries are opting to go the old-fashioned way. There are advantages to that, despite the dangers of catching a charge. Today, I want to look at the advantages grey market services can offer that their legal counterparts cannot. By doing so, I hope to better understand the reasons why grey market services have persisted despite cannabis being legalized, and what changes to the legal market might allow them to compete better with that side of the industry.

 487.

 488.
1. It Comes Down to Delivery

 489.
It sounds a bit silly, but I do believe that laziness is an enormous factor in the dominance of grey market cannabis businesses. Stoners are lazy! It’s a stereotype that’s been around for decades, and honestly, I think it’s pretty accurate. If I can stand as an example for all stoners, I am quite aware of just how lazy I can be. I’d rather have my weed delivered than get dressed, go all the way outside, and then wait on the curb for a budtender to put my order together. That’s a lot of time and effort in the moment, given all I really wanna do is smoke.

 490.
Delivery resolves that issue!

 491.
Honestly, the fact that cannabis dispensaries across Ontario were forced to give up doing home deliveries has finally driven that nail through the coffin for me. The legal side of the industry had a golden opportunity to compete with the black market on what I believe to be the single most important factor in the success of their business: ease of access. If you have to walk somewhere to get the thing you want, then that becomes a barrier to doing it. That’s assuming you’re not stoned, though, at which point that barrier might start to look a little insurmountable. If I have the choice between delivery and picking up my food, I’m probably going to have it delivered. The same goes for weed.

 492.
That’s assuming the price of delivery isn’t too steep, which is a nice transition into my next point:

 512.
It’s really, really tough to beat the prices that unlicensed growers sell their product for. As a licensed dispensary in Canada, the products you have access to are strictly quality-controlled and supplied by licensed growers or producers. The government’s extremely high standards for quality means that those growers are forced to spend more money through the cultivation process of their flower, which in turn results in them having to sell that product at a higher price.

 513.
The grey market, on the other hand, has no quality control or really any regulations whatsoever. This has its own downfalls, of course, as just about anyone with enough room in their house for some plants can grow weed these days. Home-grow laws have really opened up the market to whoever has an enterprising mind and a few bucks for seeds. While the quality of grey market cannabis can be a little dodgy, there are lots of newer growers trying to compete with the emerging craft cannabis market that’s been gaining steam on the legal side. In the years since federal legalization, grey market businesses have had to compete with the many high-quality products from licensed cannabis dispensaries.

 514.
The legal market still can’t quite compete on price, but it seems like the grey market is beginning to compete on quality. That doesn’t bode well for the legal dispensaries.

 542.
As a result, however, there’s a short list of legitimate contenders for a cannabis license buried beneath almost infinite ranks of bottom-barrel businesses.

 543.
I’m sure you’ve seen a few of those, yourself- they’re popping up everywhere! The government seems to have sorted through whatever organizational holdups were limiting them from distributing licenses freely, so we’ve seen a sort of spike these past few months of new dispensaries opening. If you take a look at any decent cannabis directory, you’ll see this fact reflected in the sheer amount of pins that represent new businesses appearing on their map. Compared to how it was even a year ago, it feels like the floodgates have finally opened.

 544.
That being said, it took a long time for those pathways to open themselves. Grey market cannabis has made a lot of leaps and bounds while legal services were clambering over a license. Even after you get licensed, you still have to order product through the government, so you’re basically condemned to their supply side management. If your only competition comes from other legal entities, then that won’t be a problem, but there are lots of people working in the grey market that know their shit as far as distribution.

 551.
4. Licensed Dispensaries Can’t Offer Everything

 552.
The products you can purchase at a licensed dispensary vary wildly from province to province. In Quebec, for example, the SQDC doesn’t sell any vaporizers or high-dosage edible products. Most dispensaries have edible products available, but their THC content is restricted by the government. Grey market services can offer far more potent edibles at a similar price point (if not a lower one), and that’s the way the government prefers it. Better safe than sorry, in their eyes. They’re not risking any lawsuits when a customer inevitably takes too much and passes out at a less than ideal time.

 553.
As a result, however, legal services can’t really compete when it comes to their edible potency. Playing it safe is probably a good call, especially with all of the new products out there, but it’s keeping them from being able to attract potential customers that need a bit more kick from their cannabis. There are Canadians who have been smoking their entire lives, for whom the legal dosage limit means that they won’t be getting high unless they spend $100 or more on gummies. That’s not cost-effective, either!

 591.
Both sides of the Canadian cannabis industry have room to grow. Both have lots of room to make improvements to their services, not only in the terms discussed above but in a lot of other ways that might improve the quality of life for their respective customer bases.

 592.
Honestly, the competition between the two sectors has driven a lot of that change. The legal market has made strides in terms of lowering their prices and allowing deals and discounts to compete with the grey market, while the grey market has seen a rise in product quality across the board as they seek to compete with the high-quality products offered by licensed dispensaries.

 593.
With so much room to grow, only time will tell which side comes out on top!

 631.
It hasn’t really been a big concern for me before now, as I haven’t seen too many people during the pandemic, but it’s getting to the point where I can start to make actual plans again!

 632.
In the past, those plans would typically involve a joint or two to share with friends, but that might have to change. The pandemic has changed the way we look at certain aspects of cannabis culture, the most prominent being the way we share weed at events.

 633.
I’m a joint roller, personally, and I think that’s probably the most-affected method of smoking together.

Even with the proper ‘PPE’, I think a lot of people will be hesitant to share a joint that’s just been inches from another person’s nose and mouth. You can disinfect your pipes and bongs, but you can’t really clean a joint before you pass it on. Even if you use a pin, or paperclip, your lips are still in contact with the rolling paper. Even with a filter, you can’t dodge contact completely.

 660.
But I Like Smoking Joints

 661.
That’s fine! You don’t have to stop smoking joints (or blunts, if that’s your thing). Joints and blunts will be around forever, they’ll just probably be treated more like cigarettes. Instead of rolling one colossal blunt to share between a bunch of people, you might have to roll a couple Percy’s and distribute them accordingly. It’s a little more work at the front end, for sure, and that alone will drive people away from rolling. Rolling a joint can be quick, but rolling 3 or 4 can get tedious fast. I can see things going one of two ways: either a lot of folks will learn how to roll for themselves, or the job of ‘designated joint roller’ might start to carry a cost. The price of dinner, maybe?

 662.
That’s only if you’re really tied to joints, though, which a lot of people aren’t. Pipes, bongs, and even vapes can be cleaned and disinfected before being passed, so as long as you don’t mind the taste of isopropyl, using those to smoke should be effectively unchanged. Experts have suggested that anyone fully vaccinated against COVID-19 should be able to safely share smoking equipment, but only if they live in areas with high vaccination rates. Most recommendations suggest that an 80% vaccination rate of eligible people in a given area is a key target for this sort of activity.

 663.
Aside from pins and customized personal mouthpieces, there isn’t much that can be done with joints to make them fully sanitary. Most common rolling papers are so thin that you can’t treat them with cleaning solution without compromising their integrity. You also can’t do much to clean the bud itself between the time you grind it and the point you have to pack it in your joint. Many are suggesting that the era of joints is essentially over, and that new smokers are unlikely to learn how to roll one solely for personal use. At some point, the time and the effort required to roll a joint is going to outweigh the cost of walking down the street and grabbing a $10 pipe from the convenience store. The holdouts will be few and far between, and in time, finding someone who can roll a joint without assistance will be rare. Pre-rolls might just have their heyday in the post-pandemic world.

 683.
Not new, exactly, but there are a lot of people playing around with ideas that haven’t been seen in a while. Lots of smokers are revisiting ideas like the PowerHitter, which has been around since the 70’s but never popular on any widespread basis.

 684.
The recent relaunch of the product occurred just before the COVID situation really reared its head (conspiracy, anyone?), and their sales were only boosted once the public realized that they could use a PowerHitter to reduce contact with fellow smokers during a shared smoking session.

 691.
Only one person has to touch the PowerHitter for a group to use it, and no one smoking from it ever has to touch their mouth directly to the joint inside.

 692.
That’s just one idea! Lots of people see this issue as a major push toward edible cannabis products, as well as a huge boost for cannabis-infused beverages. The prevailing thought is that weed will go the way of alcohol, and everyone will bring their own supply instead of splitting everything communally. I can definitely see that happening, but I don’t know if I would like it. Personally, I feel like something would be lost if we decide, collectively, to give up that unique part of cannabis culture.

 693.
I do consider that unique to cannabis! With other drugs, you’ll often share a bit with friends, but you’re not actually sharing it. No one pours coke on the back of their hand and just offers it up to a group of their friends, one by one, to make sure they all get some. It would be weird if they did that. If you know someone that does this, you should probably stop knowing them. Even just thinking about it feels weird, so I’m going to stop now. Don’t do that.

 699.

 700.
What Are We Supposed To Do, Then?

 701.
Personally, I encourage everyone to use this societal blip as an excuse to experiment! That’s pretty much the same advice I give for any blips in life, though, so please take that with a grain of salt.

 702.
That being said, why not experiment a bit? If you’ve been hitting the ol’ bong too much, why not try something different? There are lots of people trying to identify the next big trend in terms of cannabis ingestion, but that’s gonna take a lot of time and research. You just need to find what works for you, and that’s a lot less work. If you’ve never tried an edible before, then why not now? If you’ve always wondered what it’s like to dab with extracts, why not buy a rig? Play around and figure out what works for you, don’t worry much about the wider world of weed. That’ll figure itself out in time.

 703.
Try the cannabis drinks, if they interest you! Maybe learn to roll a joint before it becomes a lost art! Perhaps, one day, we’ll teach our sons and daughters how to roll a joint in scouts the way we teach them how to tie most knots. For most of them, both skills will prove equally archaic and irrelevant. The most you have to lose is a few grams of wasted weed, if you mess up a roll or drop a piece. Figure out what YOU prefer, then worry about what you might have to do to adapt post-pandemic.

Grabba is derived from a unique tobacco leaf called ‘Fronto’, which is mostly grown in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands. Fronto leaf is sometimes called ‘Fanta’ (not to be confused with the post-war Germanic soft drink), and that’s just within the Jamaican community! They have three separate words for one leaf, and the only real difference between them is how it’s prepared.

 782.

 783.

 784.

 785.
Typically, ‘Fronto’ and ‘Fanta’ are used to refer to the natural leaf. If it’s growing on a tree, or if you picked it fresh and didn’t do anything else to the leaf, then that’s what you’d call it. Grabba is used to refer to Fronto leaf that’s either been cut into strips, or broken into smaller pieces in preparation for use. The strips are cut to be a perfect size and shape for rolling blunts, as that’s what most people use grabba for. When the leaf is broken up in smaller pieces, it can then be added to a bowl or joint and add to the effects of any cannabis you smoke. It’s basically like smoking poppers, but a bit less harsh. You cut out a lot of the heavier chemical additives that get mixed into cigarettes, and as a result the effects of the nicotine from the Fronto leaf become more prominent.

 786.
If you like smoking poppers, or enjoy the head rush you can get from nicotine, then adding grabba to your weed might interest you. It’s a more natural way to ingest nicotine, and as I mentioned before, tends to come with fewer chemical preservatives than pouring a cigarette over your bowl.

 800.
OK, you got me, that one was a tagline for the soft drink. I promise I’ll stop mentioning the fact that Fanta was invented by National Socialists.

 801.
Now that we know a bit more about where grabba came from, it might be nice to know a little more about what it can actually do for you. As I mentioned earlier, the most popular use for grabba is to add a natural tobacco flavour to your blunt or bowl. Regular users also suggest that the fronto leaf itself tastes quite a bit like chocolate, so many use the leaf as a natural flavour enhancer. Combine that with the body buzz from nicotine inside the leaf, and grabba can really change the smell and flavour profile of whatever cannabis you smoke it with.

 802.
Smoking fronto leaf won’t get you high (by itself), but smoking a high dose of nicotine can still have powerful physical effects. The body buzz specifically can help manage the effects of heavier strains of cannabis, and help you stay awake when you feel yourself start to drift off. It’s an easy way to deal with heavier indica strains, and often makes them feel more like an indica-dominant hybrid when smoked. The effects of nicotine can be similar to those of a mild sativa strain, so grabba can provide a sort of ‘boost’ to strains with similar effects.

 803.
For those who like to roll, Fronto leaf (and tobacco more generally) are known to help smooth out the structure of both joints and blunts, as well as help the contents to smoke more consistently. If you find that your joints tend to ‘canoe’ when you smoke them, a little bit of broken-up tobacco or grabba does a lot to fix that. Joints can also canoe when you’re drooling all over them, though, so maybe just check your saliva before you jump into some grabba. Grabba your tongue and just shove it back into your mouth.

 804.
…I’m really sorry about that one.

 819.
If learning more about grabba and fronto has made you want to try some, we’ve always got supply at Farmer’s Link! Just like cannabis, or really any plant outside of succulents, grabba doesn’t last forever. If you store it well, the leaf might last a couple years before it gets too dry (or worse, too mouldy) to use. Typically, you’ll want to store it in a cool, dark place inside an airtight container. Honestly, just store it the same way you would your weed.

 820.
You can even smoke your grabba by itself, if you want. It’s essentially a natural flavoured tobacco product, so if that’s your thing, grabba is known to be one of the best on the market. The effects would be the same as if you’d smoked a bowl of pure tobacco, but the grabba tastes a little nicer. For people like myself, who find that cigarettes can kind of taste like ass, that’s a pretty big selling point. As I mentioned earlier, it also lacks a lot of the more volatile chemical additives found in most cigarettes. If you have asthma or other respiratory issues, grabba is way easier to smoke. Honestly, it’s not even close.

 821.
Hopefully I’ve piqued your interest about grabba, fronto, and how you can use them to enhance your cannabis experience! If there’s enough interest, I’d love to do a deeper dive and write about more modern grabba culture.

 861.
It’s not uncommon to see deals and various promotions being offered by the many fine dispensaries or weed delivery services within the GTA. 863.
Promotions and deals are important to cannabis vendors because, at some point, they all need to cycle product. 883.
Why do Weed Promotions Seem to Be so Boilerplate?

 884.
Why does every weed delivery service in the city seem to have the same gummy deal? I’ve never seen a promo so ubiquitous as “buy an ounce and get a few free gummies” in another industry. I’m sure it works, because it must if every service that I know is running it. I can’t help but think there must be something more exciting, though.

 885.
Using edibles as a promotion doesn’t help with the expiry-related problems that I brought up earlier. If you store them properly, good edibles maintain their potency for an extremely long time. In my opinion, however, edible promotions are of limited use when it comes to attracting new customers. Once upon a time they might have drawn in those who never dabbled in the ways of edible cannabis products, but in 2021 that’s a very small subset of cannabis users. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that these promotions are largely holdovers from the edible boom that followed widespread legalization (about which I plan to write more in the future).

 886.
The other common ‘deal’ I see no end in site for is discounting strains as they approach their expiration. This one just makes sense, though. If you have a product nearing its expiry that no one wants to pay for, lowering the price might let you sell a little more before you’ve gotta toss it. I have no problem with this, but I think it still falls squarely in the ‘boring’ category of promotions.

 906.
I hope you didn’t think the title of this article was merely clickbait: there are new, exciting offers brewing in the world of cannabis promotions. One such offer comes through Farmer’s Link, who hosts this very blog upon their website! For those who might be unaware about our gracious host, Farmer’s Link is a weed delivery service that operates within the GTA. Their aptly named ‘Weed Max’ promotion, if I do say so myself, is definitely new and different in a field defined by ‘same’ and ‘similar’.

 907.
Also, for those coming into this post not expecting a Farmer’s Link plant, come on! When you’ve got the best promotions in the game, you’ve gotta let the people know. If I honestly believed that there was any other comparable promotion on the market, I’d be posting about that.

 908.
Here’s how Weed Max works: every time you spend $100 with Farmer’s Link, you get a number for the weekly draw. $200 gets you two numbers, and so forth.

 911.

 912.

 914.

 915.
Every Friday, after the official Lotto Max numbers are drawn, you win a 1/2oz if your number matches the official bonus number from the draw. As the numbers drawn are publicly available, the process is very transparent. The numbers are also available on the Winner’s Circle page shortly after being drawn. Here’s the trick, though: hit that bonus number 4 weeks in a row? You get 1lb. of weed for free.

 916.
That’s not a typo: 1 free POUND. Not to mention, even if your number doesn’t match the bonus number from the draw, you still get points. Those points can be redeemed for products you can buy through Farmer’s Link, and you can get them if your number matches any of the numbers other than the bonus drawn that week. The more you buy, the higher your chances become of at least getting something. As the weekly numbers only range from 1-50, even smaller purchases can net you a pretty good chance at a win.

 922.

 923.
That Does Seem Pretty Sweet

 924.
It’s certainly among the more creative promotions I’ve seen in the cannabis industry. Hopefully, it’s just the start of more exciting things to come! I think it’s easy for a lot of budding cannabusinesses (no way I was the first to make that joke) to write off having good promotions as an unimportant factor of their business. I think that largely stems from the age-old belief that the product will sell itself. To some degree, that’s true. Prior to federal legalization, it was definitely true. Now, however, things have changed! There’s competition in the field, and small dispensaries and other services will have to set themselves apart somehow. Historically, promotions are the simplest way to do that.

 925.
Personally, I think the best part of promotions is how crazy you can get with them! It makes me sad that the industry seems intent on providing the lowest-effort options time and time again, even though they’ve had years to figure that shit out. It isn’t hard to have the best promotion in the business when the competition is so lacking.

 926.
Honestly, I challenge any readers to go out and find a deal as good as Weed Max. Within Ontario, at least, it isn’t gonna happen. If you know of any services that offer something cool, though, I would love to hear about it in the comments! Just to see if anyone stacks up (no links, though, I ain’t giving those away for free).

 927.
Until then, I’ll await potential challengers for the promotion throne with my pipe at the ready. Last one standing gets the final say about which service has the best promotion in the weed game, smoke until you drop. Fair warning: it’s a duel I’ve been training for my whole entire life, so you’d better bring it.

 928.
More details on Farmer’s Link and Weed Max are available via their website.

 953.
I can’t help but think they do!

 954.
I can still remember the first time I heard of CBD. It was my first time ever smoking from a friend’s volcano vape, and he came off as borderline obsessed with it. He talked a lot about using vaped weed to make edibles, and claimed that those edibles would leave you with a crazy body high. Honestly, it felt a lot like he was trying to justify what was probably a $400+ purchase at the time. As college students living in a dorm, it might’ve been the most expensive thing he owned.

 955.
That was my first exposure to the concept, a couple of years before legalization. The next time I heard about CBD was when my friends decided to make edibles, and once again they touted the various benefits of higher CBD percentage in the edibles they planned to make. Prior to legalization, those were the only two encounters with the acronym I had. Today, it’s difficult to read about or research marijuana without running into blog posts, ads, and even companies that solely offer CBD extracts and related products.

 956.
In the past, CBD was little more than an attractive sidepiece to the real star of the show: THC. In the past few years, however, CBD and other cannabinoids commonly found in marijuana have been getting more attention. I think it’s worth investigating why that is, and I can’t help but think that the increase in the use of edible cannabis products is entirely unrelated.

 970.
OK, OK!

 971.
One of the reasons that CBD seems to be turning up everywhere has to do with regulations about how and where cannabis can be advertised. I think that using an example might be helpful here, so let’s just go with Facebook. Facebook has famously rejected cannabis-related advertisements on their platform, even in countries where adult use of marijuana is federally legal. However, even though they don’t allow advertisements for cannabis, Facebook does allow some advertisements for CBD products.

 972.
If that seems strange to you, you’re not alone! The distinction made by Facebook’s Public Policy is that marijuana and/or THC-containing products are “illegal, prescription, or recreational drugs.” CBD can be purchased over the counter, isn’t typically used recreationally, and isn’t illegal. CBD is still classified as a ‘drug,’ however, so even CBD ads are occasionally taken down by Facebook. Still, they’re far more likely to be approved and left active on the site than advertisements for traditional cannabis products.

 987.
The rules concerning marijuana advertisements are prohibitive, but there are other factors that have helped to shape the rise of CBD to superstardom.

 988.
Federal legalization of adult use in Canada opened up a lot of doors for growers, extract junkies, and even patisseries to experiment with THC and CBD.

 989.
CBD extracts especially gained a huge amount of traction on the legal market, thanks to their varied effects. Research on CBD has shown it to be useful in the treatment of chronic pain, migraines, inflammation disorders including arthritis, and even seizure-inducing conditions like epilepsy.

 1004.
As I’ve expressed before, I truly believe that one of the driving forces in the cannabis industry post-legalization has been the drive toward novelty. I talked about this more at length in my post about vapes and their similar rise in the world of legal weed. We’ve been smoking for so long that lots of people are exploring and experimenting with new methods of ingesting cannabis. Lots of people had the chance to try a joint in high school, but how many had the chance to try pure CBD? As recently as a decade ago, I don’t even think that was possible. People are looking for something new, and CBD has proven to be one of the most popular new products on the North American cannabis market.

 1011.
I’m Still Not Sure What CBD Really Does

 1012.
Fair enough! Let’s get into that now.

 1013.
I know that it’s a little late in the post to be getting around to this, but CBD is an abbreviation used to refer to the chemical compound ‘cannabidiol,’ which is found in both male and female cannabis plants. A portion of CBD on the market today is actually extracted from the Hemp plant, as the Hemp plant contains almost no THC. Hemp-extracted CBD is far more pure, and makes it easier for people to avoid potentially unwanted effects of THC. Personally, I don’t know why you would want to avoid those effects, but I can accept that some people don’t feel the same way about that. I love the effects of THC, but lots of people don’t! CBD has allowed those people to get the effects they want most out of cannabis, without the ones that might be frightening or negative for them.

 1014.
There are a lot of people who can benefit from the effects of marijuana, but who might have been unable or unwilling to accept it due to their experience with THC. Lots of people have negative experiences with weed in their past, whether it was getting way too high and greening out or getting stuck in a paranoid loop with the wrong group of people. It happens! I think that CBD has helped a lot of people who had early negative experiences with weed to return to the fold, in a way.

 1015.
The best example I can give is the fact that my DAD has tried CBD, despite not smoking almost his entire life. Aside from the times he caught me and sisters with weed and then smoked it himself, of course. That guy’s an asshole.

 1016.
Still, if he was willing to dive in, I think that goes to show how wide the potential audience for CBD is when compared to THC. My dad’s the kind of guy who wouldn’t be caught dead smoking weed, but he’s down to pop a couple CBD pills every night before bed to help him get to sleep. It’s all just weed, but CBD has a unique appeal to people who might have been marginalized by the ‘stoner culture’ that dominated the discourse of cannabis prior to legalization.

 1017.
Honestly, as far as CBD’s potential, I believe we’re only at the ground floor.

 1047.
I Guess I Can’t Use Creative Subtitles For This Post

 1048.
Which will limit me, for sure, but I’ll find other ways to make this work so I can still direct-inject the flavour you all crave into those hungry little brains of yours. That’s my job, right? To regurgitate cannabis knowledge unto my audience, not unlike a mother bird who spews a half-digested rodent like a fountain onto the awaiting faces of her hungry hatchlings. You, my viscera-covered young, will learn just as your ancestors did: with the ever-present threat of being kicked out of the nest and falling to your premature death always lingering deep in the back of your mind.

 1049.
That’s how we should run provincial education, honestly: build schools on stilts, and allow the teachers to just go ahead and kick the kids right out the windows when they’re being dicks. I’m not saying this would fix the laundry list of issues our society will face over the coming years, but it would certainly be a good start. Once we’ve figured out the stilts, we’ll start work on an all-regurgitated meal plan. With both initiatives in place, how will future generations fail to soar? They won’t, is what I’m telling you. The fear of falling will ensure that they exist in a perpetual state of anxiety, which is awesome for getting things done. Trust me, I’ve been a teacher.

 1058.
Right! Weed delivery. Riiiiiigghhtt, right, right.

 1059.
The reason same day weed delivery has grown so much in popularity is simple: you can order your product and receive it the very same day! When you order weed through the mail, you could be waiting weeks to smoke whatever you picked up. By the time it gets there, you might have forgotten which strains you decided to buy. With same day delivery, though, it’s right there.

 1060.
As same day delivery becomes more commonplace, the services who really stand above the rest will start to offer 1 hour weed delivery. Who knows, in time we might even see the Pizza Pizza of weed delivery services emerge, and your order will be free unless it’s at your door in 40 minutes. Personally, I would call it ‘Weedza Weedza’. I’m willing to workshop that name, though, I’m not attached to it.

 1061.
Basically, as we go forward, the services that guarantee a reasonable delivery window will be the ones to look out for. Not the ones that guarantee delivery within a span of 3+ hours, I’m not trying to book service for my washer/dryer. Lots of companies claim to be ‘the uber eats of cannabis,’ but I don’t have to book off an entire afternoon to order food.

 1087.
This one isn’t hard. I feel like most delivery services do this already, but as the field continues to grow and develop, this is something all of them should have. I’ll be the first to admit that I occasionally lose track of the time, especially when I’m awaiting a delivery.

 1088.
I don’t want to be surprised by a call from my driver, who’s already ticked because I wasn’t waiting outside when he got there. What if I lose a round of Smash because of the distraction? Let’s face it, I wouldn’t lose otherwise (come at me).

 1089.
Most services I’ve used have offered some sort of early notification system, even if it’s just a text from dispatch letting me know that my driver’s nearby. Even if you’re entertaining guests, having no pants on is a great way to establish dominance right off the bat.

 1103.
3. Do They Have A Decent Return Policy?

 1104.
This is a big one. A few of the services I’ve dealt with personally haven’t had a return policy, which is kind of a big deal in the cannabis industry. If you order product, whether it’s flower, edibles, vape cartridges, or whatever you use to get high, there’s a chance it’s gonna show up in a state that you don’t like. It might not smell or look the way it did on the company’s website, or it might be dry as hell for no good reason.

 1105.
Any good delivery service will accept returns of unopened product. That’s a given. The best of them, however, also offer returns on opened or partially used product. The best of the best offer same day returns on product, even if that means they have to operate outside their regular delivery hours. The best of the best are aware that customer satisfaction is of the utmost importance in this industry, and if they have to take a hit on partially used product to ensure their customers are satisfied, they will.

 1106.
This is a novelty, as someone who’s been smoking weed for years. I can honestly say that before legalization, I would’ve been crazy to ask my dealer for a ‘return’ when he sold me some skunk weed. We just sucked it up and smoked it, what else could we do? In 2021, all you have to do is ask to swap and most drivers will probably let you. Some might take a day to make the swap, but the fact that as a customer that option even exists is still awesome to me.

 1120.
As a weed delivery service in 2021, you really have to set yourself apart. There are a lot of new companies out there, and almost all of them are constantly running promotions to attract new customers. I plan to write more about this in the future, but most promotions I see from delivery services tend to be boring. I see a lot of free gummies and edibles, maybe some free pre-rolls or a percentage off of your first order, enough that those promotions are starting to feel like the bare minimum those companies can offer.

 1121.
Why not run something exciting? Arrange a scavenger hunt in your area, add some sort of game or lottery system to your online store. Some companies use scaling discounts based on previous purchase history, which rewards more loyal customers. There are a lot of creative things going on in the industry, but they’re not being talked about!

 1122.
You can’t tell me that’s not cooler than a bag of free gummies!
