43.
I ended up looking at the potential for green roofs in NYC. As I have already done a research paper with this sort of aspect in mind (with regards to London) I thought it would be appropriate. In the end I have opted for a powerpoint presentation with a Google Tour at the end. I initially wanted to use Arc to do 3D modelling, not sure what I was doing wrong with it but I couldn’t get it to work and ended up using Sketchup instead. Have never used it before, it was really easy to use and obviously compatible with Google Earth. So that ended up nicely, as I probably would have had some sort of difficulty or issue importing 3D Arc data in to there.

Although no mention on working out small kinks in Arc as it might be beneficial! No doubt I am not the only one fed up of constant crashing, or getting unknown errors only to close the program and try the exact same thing with the same layers and, hey presto! It works.. What gives ESRI? Anyways, small rant over.

 62.
Also, is it possible to make the presentations available on blackboard? Particularly for those done over the phone (or the other program) when it’s pretty difficult to hear.

The first presentation was really informative on the history of policies and it’s interesting to learn about how they’ve developed and also started to integrate information. I found the Tampa information (tiger?) on information about the services to be very interesting, I’m sure a lot of people are curious about what’s going on when they’re driving past somewhere, and although some of the departments upload this data there are many that do not. Although I can understand why having a live feed publicly available would quickly be taken advantage of.

 98.

I found the presentations last week really interesting! The research with regards to panther crossings was very insightful and I can see how that approach could be used for a variety of things.

 99.
The turtle presentation was also very informative and I liked all the different insights to the various research areas students/GA’s were doing. The one that stuck out for me was when they painted the turtle shells- there was a woman in the UK that did this with snails. Purely for her on curiosity she found snails in her garden and put a dot of nail polish on their shells and drove them a couple of miles away- sure enough she found snails in her garden with the painted dots!

 100.
Furthermore, I wonder how much good many of these research labs are doing, particularly the one that was mentioned in South America in which the turtles were released without their back flippers. This of course affects negatively on their ability to dig when they come to lay their eggs, but how much other damage has it inflicted on their lives when they are out in the sea?

 118.

This post will probably be a bit all over the place as I’m just writing as I think and compiling data/ideas etc.

 119.
I was still mulling over my project, originally I wanted to somehow incorporate environmental sustainability of the city, but I couldn’t figure out how to start that and it didn’t really interest me all that much.

 120.
So anyway, I found an awesome project that gave me some inspiration ‘3-D GIS : Virtual London and beyond’ (http://cybergeo.revues.org/2871), it includes many aspects although it states that’s it wasn’t available for public use at that time (and a quick Google search shows that it probably still isn’t) But it uses a variety of data and uses numerous platforms to create the interactive exploration.

 121.
My newish idea is to find the best place to live in London based on proximity to tube stations, recreational areas, low areas of crime, and after all that, then review house prices. I got this idea after reading the above project of virtual London and also from this article –

 122.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2477291/London-rents-high-cheaper-live-BARCELONA-commute-heres-.html (FYI I do not read The Daily Mail for factual news, but rather for entertainment, but a very interesting story nevertheless). So It got me thinking where is the best place in London to live from my own perspective and be able to have some fun with it by inputting potential areas into Google Earth- make sure there’s a pub nearby etc. Maybe there will be some other aspects I will take into consideration (if I come across some data).

 123.
-Have train station data

 124.
-Have population data

 125.
-Have London shapefile/census boundaries

 126.
-The biggest problem I’m having is finding house price data so I will probably use data from estate agent websites and find an average of a postal code area.

 127.
So I think that’s about it, feeling a lot better about my project now I sort of know what my plan is!

 145.

The availability of data and the public’s ability to edit geographical information has resulted in many ethical issues. From the readings they outline such issues; the main one that stood out for me is who is in control of all this information. There is no doubt that there are blurred lines when it comes to this sort of stuff. In addition to this the papers outline the difficulty in protecting personal information, such as property rights, access to records etc. I remember when the Google car was first driving around and many were concerned that burglars would be able to plan for easy escapes after breaking in making homes an easy target. Another point raised in the papers is that any powerful open source technology has the possibility of being misused and the result of this would have global consequences.

 146.
Furthermore, discussion on the ease of using platforms such as Google Earth (previously discussed in class as being popular with the general population) was prevalent throughout the papers. They allow for seamless viewing of spatial data and real-time exploration. They are appealing not only for private users but also for policy makers, practitioners etc.

 164.

As soon as I walked out the door I completely forgot what our blog was supposed to be about??? So anyways, I thought the presentation on LiDar was very informative, covered a lot of information. I already knew a bit about it from another class but this went into things a lot more and also showed how and where it can be used (which is apparently for anything and anywhere!). It was amazing how intricate some of the data was, although I know it would be difficult for storing it. He also discussed his trip to the Grand Canyon and if those images are available I would love to see them, having visited there a couple of times it is definitely a favourite place of mine!

 165.
With regards to peoples projects in class- I think there is a great variety of topics and I look forward to the presentations and how people are planning on putting them together!

 166.
With regards to my project I’m still figuring out how I plan to put it all together, but there appears to be a lot of data available for me to start playing around with. With London being a huge area I will be focusing on one area. Initially I wanted to introduce renewable energy recourses into the City of London without ruining the integrity of historic buildings- which would mean that the area would obviously have to incorporate from historic building (such as Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, etc) so the location would be in that area. However, after some suggestions in class I have also considered covering the Olympic Park area…. So, watch this space.

 167.
I’m just listing some potential sources of information for myself that I’ve come across and will get exploring later in the week.

 209.

Ok, so I’m doing a catch up with my blog which I have been lagging behind with! (whoopps!) I’ve had a peak at some other blogs for week 5 (for the class I missed) and found some good reviews on the presentation of the use of GIS in the public sector. Having not been there I can’t comment on that, however I’ve done a bit of back ground research which I will be discussing.

 210.
I found this website that outlines the benefits of using GIS in the public sector

 211.
http://www.govloop.com/profiles/blogs/how-gis-shaped-the-public-sector-in-2012

 212.
A lot of attention is given to the use of smartphones by the public which enables them to access information as well as being able to edit without the use of computers. In addition, an interesting point raised is the use of GIS for public health. With such technology, disease can be monitored with regards to current outbreaks and even with the possibility of tracing where a particular disease originated.

 213.
In addition to this, I came across a document outlining the importance of GIS for the public sector in the UK. As with numerous other countries the UK has faced budget deficits, which means it is even more difficult to manage some aspects of population movement. The paper outlines that GIS allows for a most cost effective way of planning for urban populations, management of local authorities, managing pandemics, and for emergency planning whether for natural disasters or terror threats.

 214.
One aspect of the paper discusses that the use of GIS data in the UK has previously just been used internally by organizations for their own private use and their data and information is rarely publicly available. However, the with the influence of Google, Microsoft etc having mapping data of readily available it has now encouraged organizations in the UK to have such data more accessible (which is good news for me and my project!). The document with this information can be found here

 234.

 235.
London is a thriving city with scores of historical culture covering a small spatial area which adds to the difficultly of incorporating larger sustainable approaches such as renewable energy. However, being a relatively small area, its underground is the main transportation around the city as well as it being walk-able. In addition to this bike sharing schemes are becoming popular- also known as the ‘Boris Bike’ in this scheme you’re charged a small fee and are able to take the bike from one location and leave it in another.

 236.
Although this small scale scheme is extremely beneficial to the city, I wish to explore large scale ways in which London can incorporate sustainable approaches without hindering the city’s vibrant culture and aesthetic appeal. I will consider other approaches put into place by sustainable cities and whether or not these would be appropriate for London.

 237.
I’m not quite sure how I wish to visualize this but somehow using the Google Tour platform and overlaying it with potential areas of renewable energy (Green roofs, solar panel, hydro power, etc). I will also explore the potential for sustainable buildings and homes considering the practices already being used in the UK – http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2007/nov/22/ethicalliving.renewableenergy

 239.

 240.

 241.
Again, I’m not quite sure how to visualize this, how what data I’m going to be using but I’ve found some good open source platforms (listed on the site below) that I’ll be exploring
