53.

When it rains, it pours. And in the case of the 2024 Rockies, it floods.

 54.
Pinch-hitter Jack Suwinski hit a walk-off single to score Connor Joe and lift the Pirates to a 1-0 victory over Colorado on Saturday at dank and dreary PNC Park. Suwinski drilled reliever Nick Mears’ 0-1 fastball into left field for the game-winner.

 55.
The Rockies, who have yet to win back-to-back games this season, squandered an excellent start by left-hander Austin Gomber and slid to 8-25. Dominated by talented Pirates right-hander Jared Jones for seven innings, Colorado managed just one hit and struck out 11 times.

 56.
Joe, the former Rockies fan favorite, led off the ninth with a groundball single through the left side and took second on Mears’ wild pitch. Given the Rockies’ track record, you could sense a defeat coming. Sure enough, Mears walked Jared Triolo and then intentionally walked Oneil Cruz to load the bases, setting the stage for Suwinski’s game-winner.

 57.
Colorado suffered its third walk-off loss on the current road trip, losing twice in Miami earlier in the week.

 58.
Jones came one hit away from pitching a perfect seven innings. Elias Diaz ripped a solid double into the left-field corner to lead off the fifth but was left stranded. Outside of that one swing, the Rockies could do nothing against Jones, who struck out 10 and walked none.

 59.
At 22 years, 237 days old, Jones became the youngest major league pitcher with a start of at least seven innings, one or fewer hits allowed, and 10 or more strikeouts since Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta (22 years, 22 days) on June 26, 2018, vs. Kansas City.

 60.
“It was our first time facing Jones and I’ve often said it, ‘The first-time advantage goes to the pitcher,'” Colorado manager Bud Black told reporters in Pittsburgh. “That kid has good stuff. We did a lot of homework on him … but as advertised, it was a good fastball. And he had the ability to spin the ball, and he threw a few changeups.”

 61.
Gomber was terrific and nearly matched Jones. The lefty pitched six scoreless innings, gave up four hits, walked two and fanned three. He whittled his ERA to 3.79.

 62.
“(Gomber) matched their guy, and their guy has been good,” Black told reporters. “(Jones has) a fine young arm and has a bright future, but Austin hung right there with him. Austin’s changeup came into play, and I thought all four pitches were solid. He pitched, and when he gets on his rolls, it’s usually with all four pitches being effective.”

 64.
Colorado’s defense provided Gomber with stellar support. In the second, Joe led off with a single into the right-field corner and tried to stretch the hit into a double, but Jake Cave made a perfect throw to shortstop Ezequiel Tovar to nail Joe at second.

 119.
Feltner is coming off the best start of his career, even though the Rockies lost a 7-6, 10-inning heartbreaker at Miami. He pitched a career-high eight innings but was charged with three runs on five hits, with no walks and three strikeouts. He entered the ninth inning with a 5-0 lead and was on the verge of throwing a complete game, but he allowed the first three batters to reach before he was given the hook. The Rockies’ bullpen meltdown cost him a victory. Feltner has made one previous start against the Pirates, on May 25, 2022, at PNC Park. He allowed two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts in five innings of a 10-5 Colorado loss.

 120.
Falter has made three relief appearances against Colorado, all with Philadelphia, going 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA. He last faced the Rockies at Citizens Bank Park on May 23, 2022. He’s coming off a loss at Oakland, where he gave up five runs in five innings as the Pirates fell 5-1. He’s pitched very well in his two starts at PNC Park this season, posting a 0.69 ERA. He has a 2.89 ERA over his last five starts after giving up six runs in four innings in his first start. Pittsburgh is 4-2 when he starts this season.

 155.
The Rockies, amid a youth movement, have intriguing talent on the current roster and in their farm system, but they are a bad team right now.

 156.

The Rockies are off to the worst start in franchise history, and questions need to be asked.

 157.
They entered a weekend series at Pittsburgh with a 7-24 record, putting them on pace to finish 37-125. While they will likely improve on their .226 winning percentage, enabling them to avoid contending with the expansion 1962 New York Mets (40-120) as one of the worst teams in MLB history, another 100-loss season appears probable.

 158.
The Rockies, amid a youth movement, have intriguing talent on the current roster and in their farm system, but they are a bad team right now. Following a 5-4, 10-inning loss at Miami on Thursday, manager Bud Black called a team meeting during which he urged the team to keep playing for one another and ride out the storm.

 159.
Still, coming off last year’s 103-loss season, the Rockies face significant issues.

 160.
With that in mind, I spoke with general manager Bill Schmidt in a one-on-one interview. Now in his third full season as the GM, Schmidt expressed frustration with how the Rockies are playing, but he made it clear that he believes the club is headed in the right direction.

 161.
Q: Obviously, this is not the start you wanted. What’s been the biggest issue?

 162.
Schmidt: I think it’s been clear. It’s been the inconsistency of our offense. We do have some young players on the team, but there were a number of guys who got off to slow starts — (Nolan) Jones, (Kris) Bryant, (Brendan) Rodgers — guys we expected more from.

 163.
We have been in a lot of games, but we haven’t figured out how to win those games. Kyle (Freeland) had a couple of rough starts in the beginning, but for the most part, our starting pitching has kept us in games. But at the end of the day, we haven’t gotten the big hit to put us ahead, to get us back into the game, to win a game. For me, it comes back to our offense and our lack of execution.

 164.
Q: Is the poor offense because of the team’s strategy and approach?

 165.
Schmidt: It’s not about our strategy. We just need to put the ball in play. We strike out too much, we chase, and we chase outside the zone. We average (10.2) strikeouts per game. That’s too many. Our guys care, and they are trying hard, but they have to be more disciplined.

 166.
(Hitting coach Hensley) Bam Bam (Meulens) and those guys talk about that all the time. They talk about the strike zone and being patient. The work ethic is great. Guys are trying, but at the end of the day, guys aren’t getting it done.

 167.
Q: But wasn’t that the major emphasis in the offseason? To be a more disciplined and productive offense?

 168.
Schmidt: We talk about it all the time. We have to keep grinding through it. We have some young guys who are trying to establish themselves at the major league level. At some point, you have to focus on somebody else and not necessarily yourself.

 169.
Sometimes, you want to do so well for yourself and, ultimately, for the team. But rather than focusing on yourself, the focus should be, ‘I’m going to pick somebody else up, and I am going to do this for my teammates.” That’s a little bit of what we are going through.

 216.
Q: Is the losing simply because of a lack of talent on the roster?

 217.
Schmidt: I don’t think so. At the end of the day, it’s about getting the job done. I think, physically, we have the tools and the raw talent. We just aren’t executing and getting the job done.

 218.
There are some positives. We talked about (Ryan McMahon) in the offseason. Mac made some adjustments. There was a point in April where the strikeouts went up a little bit, but for the most part, he had a good first month. (McMahon entered the weekend slashing .316/.407/.491 with four home runs and 18 RBIs.)

 219.
And (shortstop Ezequiel) Tovar had a good month. Even though he has to cut down on the chase, there have been some positives with him. And you look at our catching and I think Elias Diaz and (Jacob) Stallings had good months. There are some positives. (Center fielder) Brenton Doyle made some good adjustments this winter, and he’s played well. (.300/.347/.464 three homers, eight RBIs).

 220.
Q: Buddy called a team meeting after Thursday’s loss in Miami. I get the sense that the frustration level within the club is high, but there is no finger-pointing in the clubhouse. Am I correct?

 221.
Schmidt: No finger-pointing. Not at all. Buddy basically told the guys to stay together. Guys are frustrated. At the end of the day, you have to get the job done.

 222.
We have had a tough schedule and played some good teams, but that’s no excuse. We still have to execute, and the bottom line is that we haven’t executed. It’s not because there isn’t a want-to. But I will say that Tuesday night’s game (when Colorado blew a 5-0 lead in the ninth and lost 7-6 to the Marlins in 10 innings) was a kick in the gut.

 223.
Q: During spring training, there was talk about Buddy’s contract extension, but that hasn’t happened yet. Many people will look at your 7-24 record and ask, ‘What is the manager doing wrong?” Fans want to hold someone to be held accountable. What are your thoughts?

 224.
Schmidt: I think Buddy and the coaches are doing a very good job.

 225.
Q: Why do you say that?

 226.
Schmidt: Because of the work ethic of the players. Our guys are playing hard. The effort level is there, night in and night out. That’s what I see.

 227.
Q: What’s going on with Kris Bryant? He’s only played 13 games and is hitting .149. He was supposed to be a big part of your offense.

 228.
Schmidt: It’s still the back (injury). He’s feeling better. He’s back in Denver. Is he going to be back with the team when we get home (from the road trip)? I don’t know. I do know he’s starting to do baseball activities. He wants to play catch and things like that. I don’t have a timetable for his return.

 229.
Q: Are you concerned that all of the losses will have a hangover effect, especially on the young players? Do you think this will create a losing culture?

 230.
Schmidt: No, no, I don’t. Good things are going to happen. Some good things are going on in the (farm) system. And I think some of the young kids we have now, and those coming up through the system, see this as an opportunity to change things.

 231.
Q: What positive things can you pull out of this rough start?

 232.
Schmidt: The growth and maturity of some of the players. I think of Brenton Doyle’s progress. I look at the left side of our infield with Mac and Tovar. We have a chance to be good over there for a while.

 233.
Diaz and Stallings have done a good job behind the plate. I’m excited to see what (rookie outfielder Jordan) Beck does. I think he brings a little bit of strut. When we get Nolan Jones back, and we can play Beck in right field, we have a chance to have a very athletic, talented outfield. I’m looking forward to that.

 234.
For the most part, the starting rotation has been OK. (Cal) Quantrill goes out there and competes and (Ryan) Feltner has shown some growth.

 235.
Bullpen-wise, it’s not a great bullpen. But a guy who struggled in spring training, (Victor) Vodnik, has been a positive the first month. (Nick) Mears has shown some growth, but he still has to get better. (Left-hander) Jalen Beeks has been good.

 236.
Q: Will you bring up more young players in the coming months, guys like catcher Drew Romo and outfielder Zac Veen?

 237.
Schmidt: They will tell us when they are ready. I’m not going to rule it out. I think we are building some things in the middle of the diamond. I was hoping (Nolan) Jones wouldn’t take a step back like he did in the first month, but he hasn’t lost his talent. The talent is still there.

 238.
Q: So, where is this team right now?

 239.
Schmidt: We got off to a bad start that we weren’t planning on. At the end of the day, it’s easy to say that. But the fans, I know, they want to see results, and I realize that. I understand that. We have to play better baseball. It starts with our offense.

 240.
Raw Numbers

 241.
Entering the weekend series against the Pirates, the numbers paint a vivid picture of the Rockies’ poor start to the season:

 242.
• 7-24: Colorado’s record, the worst start in franchise history and worst in the National League.

 243.
• One: Number of victories for the starting pitchers through 31 games, the fewest in the majors.

 244.
• Minus-75: Rockies’ run differential, the second worst in the majors. They had been outscored 192-117.

 245.
• Minus-24: Rockies’ run differential in the first inning, worst in the majors. They had been outscored 39-15.

 246.
• 5.92: ERA for the pitching staff, the highest in the majors.

 247.
• 6.46: ERA for starters (highest).

 248.
• 5.20: ERA for relievers (fourth-highest).

 249.
• 6.48: Strikeouts per nine innings by Rockies pitchers (fewest).

 250.
• 4.06: Walks allowed per nine innings (fifth-most).

 251.
• 1.16: Home runs allowed per nine innings (ninth-most).

 252.
• .238: Team batting average (17th).

 253.
• .670: Team OPS (10th).

 254.
• 24: Homes runs (26th).

 255.
• .237: Average with runners in scoring position (10th).

 256.
• .179: Average with runners in scoring position and two outs (27th).

 257.
• 27.2%: Strikeout rate (second-highest).

 258.
• 7.6%: Walk rate (fifth-lowest).

 259.
• 32.9: Chase rate (second-highest).

 260.
• 11: Stolen bases (last).

 294.
Rockies are playing baseball so poorly that there is a growing suspicion that they might do it worse than any team in the modern history of the sport.

 295.

The best thing about rock bottom is the bottom part. It has no delusions of adequacy, and knows its friends are Antarctica, the 1997-98 Denver Nuggets and “Tiger Blood” Charlie Sheen.

 296.
The worst thing is the rock. Or in this case, the Rockies. They are playing baseball so poorly that there is a growing suspicion that they might do it worse than any team in the modern history of the sport. For 62 years that honor has belonged to the 1962 Mets.

 297.
With the Rockies, it is not some dramatic failure. They are mundane in their awfulness. They don’t pitch particularly well, they don’t hit particularly well, and if that doesn’t undermine them, they run the bases like they are being chased by bees.

 298.
The Rockies woke up Saturday with an 8-24 record. They are on pace for 40 wins. The Mets finished 40-120-1. That was an expansion team. What is the Rockies’ excuse? They consider themselves a draft-and-development organization, but they don’t draft or develop well. Brendan Rodgers is their best domestic player drafted since 2015. And he’s hitting .237 with one home run.

 299.
The Rockies make up for their lack of power by striking out too much, third most in the league. They average 10 Ks per game, making opponent pitchers look like a blend of Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson.

 300.
Colorado ranks last in ERA (5.79), hits allowed, and batting average against (.288). So, it should come as no surprise that the Rockies were the first team ever to trail in each of their first 31 games, a streak snapped Friday. Outfielder Jordan Beck and pitcher Chase Dollander, both terrific prospects, cannot be counted on to save them from the indignity of history.

 301.
The Rockies say things about playing with heart and working hard. These are phrases uttered by high school and college teams. As former manager Clint Hurdle was fond of saying, MLB is “not a try-hard league. It is a do-good league.” The Rockies are not good. How bad can it get? It’s time to start tracking them with the ’62 Mets.

 302.
Milwaukee Bucks guard Patrick Beverley needs a long suspension from the NBA for his actions Thursday night. Twice he threw a basketball into the stands, once hitting a fan. Then he declined to answer questions from a reporter postgame because she did not subscribe to his podcast. Maybe Beverly can translate his pod to Chinese because that’s where he should be playing until the All-Star break next season. …

 303.
Congratulations to former cornerback Chris Harris Jr. on his retirement. He was the charter member of the No Fly Zone. Next stop? How about the Broncos Ring of Fame? …

 304.
The Avs set a record for goals in a five-game series by grounding the Jets. They are more explosive than the Fourth of July. If Alexandar Georgiev remains viable, anything is possible. …

 305.
After the Nuggets dispatched the Lakers, Darvin Ham talked like a coach who knew he was going to get fired. He was right. Ham is not Erik Spoelstra, but does anyone look at the Lakers roster and believe they are better than a 47-win team? Former NBA 3-point whiz J.J. Redick is being floated as a possible replacement. I am sure it has nothing to do with him doing a podcast with LeBron James. Total coincidence.

 306.
The NFL schedule should be released late next week. Rooting for the Broncos to open the season vs. the Steelers. You know, just because.

 307.
MAIL TIME

 308.
So are we all just assuming that Javonte Williams is cooked (with the drafting of Audric Estime)?

 309.
— @esp1371, via Twitter

 310.
Running back Javonte Williams made an inspirational return from his knee surgery last season. But his early return and rehab took its toll, in my opinion. He averaged 3.2 yards per carry over the final 10 games. To form a one-two punch with Estime, Williams needs to regain the burst that allowed him to run with violent intentions.

 332.

The Rockies, oh so desperately needed someone to make a big splash.

 333.
Two players delivered Friday night — one of them literally — in the Rockies’ 3-2 win over the Pirates at PNC Park.

 334.
Ryan McMahon led off the Rockies’ three-run sixth inning with a 445-foot homer that splashed down in the Allegheny River. That inning gave right-hander Cal Qauntrill all the support he needed to notch his first victory in a Rockies uniform.

 335.
The Rockies (8-24) snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 3-14 on the road. But the win didn’t come without white knuckles. Pittsburgh’s Oneil Cruz crushed a two-run homer off lefty reliever Jalen Beeks’ 0-2 changeup in the ninth, but Beeks struck out Connor Joe and Jared Triolo to preserve the win and get the save.

 336.
The Rockies also, finally, put an ugly record to bed. They had trailed in each of their first 31 games to begin the season, bypassing the 1910 St. Louis Browns (28 games) for the longest such streak to begin a season in the Modern Era.

 337.
“Yeah, it was like since the 1916 ‘somebodies’ … It’s good to not be a (footnote) for sure,” manager Bud Black joked with reporters after the game. “But it does feel good. I don’t think of those things during a game, but thanks for reminding me. I’ll sleep maybe a little better tonight because I haven’t been sleeping well at all. It’s been awful.”

 338.
Quantrill pitched 7 2/3 innings, giving up just three hits, all singles. His split-finger change-up confounded the Pirates, and he struck out nine and walked none. Seven of his strikeouts came via his split-finger pitch. He also got seven groundball outs; of his 99 pitches, 66 were thrown for strikes.

 339.
The right-hander became just the third Rockies pitcher to pitch at least seven scoreless innings with nine or more strikeouts and no walks. The other two are German Marquez, with nine innings and nine strikeouts on April 14, 2019, at San Francisco, and Jon Gray, with nine innings and 16 strikeouts on Aug. 17, 2016, vs. the Padres at Coors Field.

 340.
Quantrill looked like he might have a chance for his first complete game, but when he plunked Joey Bart with two outs in the eighth, Black replaced him with reliever Jake Bird.

 341.
“Cal’s fastball command was the ticket,” Black said. “That was old-school. It was down-and-away and enough inside command as well.”

 342.
McMahon’s enormous homer jump-started Colorado’s stalled offense. He punished veteran left-hander Martin Perez’s 1-1 changeup for his team-leading fifth home run. McMahon joined Hall of Famer Todd Helton as the only Rockies player to reach the Allegheny River.

 344.
Helton did it on May 4, 2001, the first year PNC opened. Helton was the second player to accomplish the feat. Houston’s Lance Berkman was the first. McMahon became the 49th player to hit a homer into the Allegheny River. It’s been done 71 times.

 345.
“That was right in my loop,” McMahon told Rockies.TV.

 346.
Black knew McMahon’s homer was special the moment the ball left the bat.

 347.
“As soon as he hit it, I knew it was out of the stadium,” Black said. “Our bench erupted. When you see something majestic like that, it’s pretty cool. When you have a beautiful swing like McMahon’s, and there’s contact and it goes like that, it’s magical. He crushed it.”

 348.
Designated hitter Elias Diaz followed up McMahon’s homer with a double. Elehuris Montero drove in Diaz with a single to left and took second on a throw to the plate. Brendan Rodgers battled reliever Hunter Stratton through a 12-pitch at-bat to score Montero with an RBI single to right.

 399.
Radio: 850 AM/94.1 FM

 400.
Gomber has pitched relatively well but has nothing to show for his efforts. He’s coming off a season-high seven-inning game against the Astros in Mexico City. He allowed four runs on six hits, but the Rockies lost 8-2. Gomber, the former Cardinal, is familiar with the Pirates, having faced them eight times. In his four starts against the Bucs, he’s 0-2 with a 10.20 ERA.

 401.
Jones, just 22, has never faced the Rockies. He’s coming off a tough, 3-2 loss at San Francisco. He gave up three runs over five innings. He enters Saturday’s game tied with the Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto with the most strikeouts (42) among all major league rookies. He’s had seven or more strikeouts in his first five career games and has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his first six big-league starts.

 428.
Colorado Rockies set ignominious franchise record by trailing in 31 straight games

 429.

Just how low can the Rockies go? There’s no telling, not after getting swept in Miami by another bad baseball team.

 430.
The Marlins finished their three-game broom job with a 5-4 walk-off win in the 10th inning Thursday afternoon at loanDepot park. The Marlins’ Jesus Sanchez lined a single to left off lefty reliever Jalen Beeks to drive in ghost runner Luis Arraez.

 431.
After the game, the Rockies closed the clubhouse to the media to hold a team meeting, presumably to figure out how to stop the bleeding.

 432.
Manager Bud Black declined to comment on what was said in the meeting, telling MLB.com: “It’s sensitive, right? It’s sensitive for the manager and the coaches to the team. So I’ll keep that within our clubhouse, but it’s a fair question.”

 433.
The Rockies, who have lost five straight games, slid to 7-24 overall and 2-17 on the road. They have yet to win a series this season, dropping nine and splitting one.

 434.
Black said the Rockies are still “playing with a lot of heart.”

 435.
“Morale is fine,” Black told MLB.com. “Guys are playing their (butts) off. We’re just not getting the clutch hit, or making a big pitch. Our guys, man, they’re fighting. It’s just not happening, and we’re not doing a lot offensively.

 436.
“I talked to them after the game and, you know, they’re frustrated because of the tough losses. But, man, this group has a lot of heart. We’re just not getting it done on the field.”

 437.
Colorado’s offensive ineptitude is stunning. On Thursday, it struck out 16 times, went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position, and left nine men stranded.

 438.
The Rockies botched a chance to score the go-ahead run in the ninth. Brendan Rodgers and Jordan Beck opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Jake Cave put down a bunt back to the mound. Reliever Anthony Maldonado threw wildly to third, attempting to force out Rodgers. Rodgers broke toward home as the ball went into left field but then held up, and Becked was tagged out in no-man’s land between second and third.

 439.
The Rockies also wasted stellar relief work from lefty Ty Blach. In the fourth, he rescued starter Peter Lambert, coming on to get the dangerous Arraez to ground into an inning-end double play. Blach pitched four innings, giving up three hits but no walks and no runs.

 440.
The Rockies made some bad history in the first inning.

 441.
The Marlins scored twice, marking the 31st time in 31 games to start this season that the Rockies have trailed at some point in a game, extending their modern-era major league record. Moreover, trailing in 31 consecutive games is the longest streak at any point in a season in franchise history. The 1998 Rockies trailed in 30 consecutive games from June 15 to July 20.

 442.
Miami didn’t waste any time getting to Lambert. Arraez led off with a double, Bryan De La Cruz walked and Jazz Chisholm drove in Arraez with a single to left. Chisholm scored on Jesus Sanchez’s sacrifice fly.

 443.
In the second, Colorado responded with a three-run homer by catcher Jacob Stallings to take a short-lived 3-2 lead.

 444.
The Marlins tied the game on Josh Bell’s one-out solo homer off Lambert in the third and took a 4-3 lead in the fourth. Lambert walked Dane Myers to open the inning, Myers stole second and advanced to third on Lambert’s wild pitch. He scored on Nick Fortes’ single to center.

 445.
Colorado tied the game, 4-4, in the fifth, combining a leadoff walk by Jake Cave, a single by Stallings and a walk by Hunter Goodman to load the bases against starter Edward Cabrera. Reliever Calvin Faucher got Ezequiel Tovar to ground into a double play, but Cave was able to score.

 446.
Lambert’s ERA soared to 5.66 after going 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.

 497.
Radio: 850 AM/94.1 FM

 498.
Quantrill had been pitching well, tossing three consecutive quality starts, until the Astros beat him up last Saturday in Mexico City. The right-hander was tagged for six runs on six hits, including two home runs, with two walks and two strikeouts over five innings. Quantill has pitched four times against the Pirates (three starts), going 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA. His last start against the Pirates came in 2021 at PNC Park when he pitched five scoreless innings.

 499.
Perez, 33, is coming off a strong start at San Francisco’s Oracle Park when he allowed one unearned run in six innings but got a no-decision. The lefty has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his first six starts, and he’s allowed just one home run in 34 2/3 innings. Perez is 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA in six career starts against the Rockies. He notched a victory last season against the Rockies while pitching for Texas, allowing two runs over seven innings in the Rangers’ 7-2 victory.

 525.
Colorado is approaching the franchise record for games without a consecutive win, set at 35 in May and June in 2022.

 526.

New month, same awful Rockies.

 527.
The Colorado club that is becoming nearly impossible to watch lost again on Wednesday at loanDepot Park, dropping to 7-23 in the club’s worst-ever 30-game start.

 528.
In the 4-1 defeat in Game 2 in Miami, the Rockies wasted a strong outing by Dakota Hudson and, in a familiar refrain, lacked clutch hits. They mustered just four knocks overall, and also committed two errors while making the Marlins, the National League’s other hopeless cellar-dweller, look good.

 529.
“We’ve got to keep fighting,” Rockies manager Bud Black told reporters. “The youth on this team is being served. … It’s baptism by fire, and they’re learning it’s hard in the big leagues against big-league pitching.

 530.
“Both sides, offense and pitching, have to improve to gain some traction.”

 531.
Hudson threw 5 2/3 innings, with the damage coming in the fifth off a Luis Arráez RBI single and a Bryan De La Cruz RBI double. After that, Jake Bird got Colorado out of the sixth and threw a scoreless seventh, but then Nick Mears was dinged for two runs in the eighth off Dane Myers’ two-RBI single.

 532.
“Hudson had a bit of an uptick in his delivery, a little bit better tempo, and if you noticed a little quick-step and more aggressiveness and momentum through his windup, especially,” Black said. “The fastball had good sink and the breaking ball had good depth to it, and he got a lot of groundballs (with 10), which is his game.”

 533.
As Miami plated those four runs, all the Rockies offense could muster was Elias Diaz’s RBI groundout in the sixth. Colorado only had one extra-base hit, a double by Ryan McMahon in the sixth, and was 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position.

 534.
Miami starter Roddery Muñoz finished with one earned run in six innings, with three hits and two walks to seven strikeouts.

 535.
“He had a pretty good arm,” Black said. “His ball-strike ratio was great, and coming in based off our scouting report, we knew he could pretty erratic. But he wasn’t. He had a good, live fastball that kept us honest, and the pitches that got us (off-balance) was a cutter and the slider.”

 536.
With the defeat, Colorado lost another series, giving the Rockies nine series defeats and one series split in 10 tries. That extends the longest stretch to open a season without winning a series in franchise history.

 583.
In Wednesday’s loss, the Rockies — who on Tuesday became the first team in baseball’s modern era to trail in each of its first 29 games while blowing a 5-0 ninth-inning lead in the series opener — matched another franchise low.

 584.
By trailing in all 30 games this year, this club tied the Colorado record for trailing in consecutive games at any point in a season, set in a dismal stretch from June 15 to July 20 in 1998.

 585.
Next up on the infamy checklist: Colorado is approaching the franchise record for games without a consecutive win, set at 35 in May and June in 2022. The Rockies now have the worst record in the National League.

 586.
The series concludes with a matinee on Thursday before the Rockies head to Pittsburgh to finish their road trip.

 638.
Lambert was effective his last time out, blanking the Padres for 2 2/3 innings on April 25 at Coors Field in a long relief appearance that enabled the Rockies to mount a ninth-inning comeback later in the game. But his lone start this year was a disaster, as the Mariners lit him up for six runs over three innings in a 10-2 loss in Denver on April 21. On a positive note, he’s done well keeping the ball in the yard, with just one homer allowed over 17 1/3 innings. The Marlins have seen very little of him. In the case of Cabrera, he’s regressed since notching a quality start in his first outing of the year. In the two games since, Cabrera’s been shaky, including yielding five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to Washington last week. Elias Diaz has a homer and a double off him in four at-bats.

 671.
At what point does Rockies manager Bud Black's job security come into question?

 672.

Denver Post sports writer Patrick Saunders with the latest installment of his Rockies Mailbag.

 673.
Pose a Rockies- or MLB-related question for the Rockies Mailbag.

 674.
At what point does Bud Black’s job security come into question? I know he doesn’t have the most talented roster to work with. Still, it seems like they also keep shooting themselves in the foot with coaching mistakes like baserunning errors and mismanaged lineups (Kris Bryant is batting third or fourth, and Ezequiel Tovar is starting the year batting seventh). I know Bud is well-liked in the organization, and he’s fairly cheap, but at some point, isn’t there a need for fresh ideas in the dugout?

 675.
— Greg, Denver

 676.
Greg, I honestly don’t know what Black’s future is with the team.

 677.
During spring training, Black and owner Dick Monfort had preliminary discussions about a contract extension that would keep Black with the team through 2025. I recently asked Black about the status of that extension, and he told me that he couldn’t discuss “confidential negotiations.”

 678.
Could it be that the Rockies’ terrible start has put Black’s extension on hold? Possibly.

 679.
Could Black be rethinking his future with the team? Possibly, but he still seems committed to helping build the Rockies’ future.

 680.
But I don’t think the Rockies will fire Black this season. Why? Because he’s done the best he could with a team bereft of major league talent. He’s repeatedly shuffled the lineup and mixed and matched his relief pitchers. I don’t think firing Black and bringing in another manager will turn things around.

 681.
The bottom line is that making Black the scapegoat for the Rockies’ failures is not the solution.

 682.
In your honest opinion, do the Rockies stand a chance of getting out of this early season funk, or is the season already kaput? What needs to change?

 683.
— Ed Helinski, Auburn, N.Y.

 684.
Ed, it depends on how you define kaput. If you mean they’ll finish in last place in the National League West and post a sixth-consecutive losing record, then their season is kaput.

 685.
But here’s the thing. We all knew this would be a rough season — the Rockies’ brass knew it, too — but I didn’t think the Rockies would be this bad. Between Kris Bryant’s back injury and slumps by Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Jones, the Rockies’ offense is awful. Its 23 home runs are the third-fewest in the majors, and its .684 OPS ranks 21st, despite playing its home games at Coors Field. The Rockies’ 277 strikeouts are the sixth-most, while their 77 walks are the third-fewest.

 686.
Colorado pitchers have posted a 6.06 ERA, the worst in the majors by more than a run (the White Sox have a 5.02 team ERA).

 687.
Having pontificated about all of that, the Rockies’ goal this season was to test their young players, evaluate their futures, and start building for the future. It will take more than 28 games to determine whether the team is progressing. We’ll see several young players get their chance in the coming months, starting with outfielder Jordan Beck, who will debut in Miami this week.

 688.
The Rockies are on pace for 126 losses this year. They can’t be this bad all year, right? This is futility on a historic level.

 689.
— Madden, Denver

 690.
Madden, I’m not sure when you submitted your question, but as I write this, the Rockies are 7-21, a .250 winning percentage that puts them on pace to finish 41-121. There is no way the Rockies are going to lose 121 games. They’re bad, but for the love of Choo Choo Coleman, they’re not 1962 New York Mets bad.

 691.
I predicted the Rockies would finish 65-97, a small step forward from their 103-loss 2023 season. I didn’t think they could lose 100 games again, but now they certainly look to be headed in that direction. In the long run, it might not matter as long as the Rockies are truly committed to a rebuild.

 692.
Shouldn’t Kris Bryant admit his back severely limits his baseball future and do the honorable thing by retiring? I’m unsure how the financials work, but perhaps this frees up money for investing in others. No more free-agent position players. Grow our own or trade. All resources go to pitchers who adjust to pitching at altitude. Probably our own, as no free agent wants to come to Colorado. But those who have success should be well-rewarded.

 693.
— Ron Secrist, Longmont

 694.
Ron, Bryant’s seven-year, $182 million contract before the 2022 season is guaranteed. I can’t imagine he would walk away from that kind of money.

 695.
I don’t know how severe his back injury is. The Rockies have been tight-lipped about it, and Bryant rarely makes himself available to the media.

 696.
He’s been on the injured list since April 14. Bryant hit just .149 with one homer through 13 games this year, and his back could have been a factor in that slow start, even though the Rockies insisted he was healthy.

I suppose they could win a couple of games in Miami against the woeful Marlins and perhaps a game at Pittsburgh. But the Rockies play 15 of their 27 games on the road in May, so I don’t think they have an easier path. They have to play better.

 769.
All of that carnage on a night when Jordan Beck was impressive in his major league debut, Ryan Feltner nearly pitched a shutout, and Elehuris Montero blasted a rare home run on the road.

 770.

Leave it to the Rockies to ruin a couple of storybook endings.

 771.
In one of the worst meltdowns in recent memory, the Rockies blew a 5-0 lead in the ninth inning and lost 7-6 to the woeful Marlins in 10 innings Tuesday night at loanDepot park.

 772.
In losing again, the Rockies became the first team since 1900 to trail in each of its first 29 games. The Rockies lost to Houston on Sunday, joining the 1910 St. Louis Browns as the only teams to trail in each of their first 28 games.

 773.
“That was a tough one … we shot ourselves in the foot,” manager Bud Black said.

 774.
The Rockies nearly dodged ignominy. Ryan McMahon hit an RBI double to right to score Sean Bouchard to give the Rockies a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth, but the Marlins scored twice in the bottom of the frame off left-hander Jalen Beeks.

 775.
Bryan De La Cruz hit an RBI double off Beeks to score pinch runner Tim Anderson, tying the game at 6-all. Then Dane Myers punched a single to right fielder Hunter Goodman, who made a perfect throw to the plate, but catcher Elias Diaz couldn’t handle the throw, and Anderson scrambled around Diaz and tagged the plate with his hand for the winning run.

 776.
Black told reporters in Miami, ” ‘Goody’ made a good play, but ‘Ellie’ couldn’t handle it.”

 777.
All of that carnage on a night when Jordan Beck was impressive in his major league debut, Ryan Feltner nearly pitched a shutout, and Elehuris Montero blasted a rare home run on the road.

 778.
But the Rockies suffered an epic and ugly ninth-inning collapse in a game featuring the National League’s two worst teams. Colorado, swept by the Astros in Mexico City last weekend, tumbled to 7-22. The Marlins, losers of seven straight games entering Tuesday, improved to 7-24.

 779.
Feltner, who had flashed potential numerous times in his career, gave up only three harmless singles over the first eight innings. But in the ninth, Vidal Brujan led off with a single, Feltner plunked Christian Bethancourt, and Luis Arraez ripped an RBI double to right, scoring Brujan.

 780.
That was it for Feltner, who was clearly unhappy when Black lifted him from the game. In came closer Justin Lawrence, who immediately melted down.

 781.
In quick succession, Miami’s Bryan De La Cruz drew a walk, Dane Myers hit a two-run single, Josh Bell singled to load the bases, and Lawrence, lacking any semblance of command, hit Jesus Sanches to drive in another run.

 782.
The Marlins tied the game, 5-5, on Emmanuel Rivera’s sacrifice fly to right. That was it for Lawrence. Black summoned Beeks to try and stop the avalanche of trouble. He did, at least for two-thirds of an inning, striking out Nick Gordon and getting Christian Bethancourt to fly out.

 783.
Beck, the highly touted outfield prospect, made his big league debut and hit 2 for 4. Starting in left field and hitting eighth, Beck singled in the first off right-hander Sixto Sanchez and added another single in the sixth off right-hander Declan Cronin.

 784.
“Just take the moment in, take a deep breath, look around and be where my feet are,” Beck told reporters about his first day with the Rockies. “A lot of people say write it down, what it feels like, don’t forget it. There are a lot of things that you want to remember from this day and carry on into the future.”

 785.
The first pitch Beck saw in his major league career was a ball, well outside the strike zone. The second pitch was a slider over the inside of the plate, and Beck lined the ball to center field for his first hit.

 786.
The Rockies scored all but one of their runs in the first off Sanchez. Ezequiel Tovar led off with a double and advanced to third on Brenton Doyle’s sacrifice bunt. McMahon singled in Tovar and advanced to second on Diaz’s groundout.

 787.
Charlie Blackmon, who entered the game in a deep funk, slashing .119/.159/.143 over his last 12 games, drove in McMahon with a single to right. Then Brendan Rodgers singled up the middle, setting the table for Montero’s 409-foot, three-run homer.

 788.
Colorado had only three hits after the first inning, but with Feltner on the mound, it didn’t matter until the ninth and 10th innings.

 789.
Still, Feltner said he let his team down.

 790.
“It will take a while for me to think about my performance,” the right-hander told Rockies.TV. “I just think right now that I let the team down. I’ve got to finish off that ninth inning. I’ve never been in that position before, and now I’m hungry to get back there.”

 791.
Wednesday’s pitching matchup

 792.
Rockies RHP Dakota Hudson (0-4, 6.57 ERA) at Marlins TBA

 842.
Hudson is still searching for his first victory in a Rockies uniform. There’s a good chance it will come on Wednesday because the right-hander has a good track record vs. Miami. In six career appearances against the Marlins (three starts), he is 2-0 with a 3.54 ERA. He’s 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in four career appearances (one start) in Miami. Hudson, however, had a rough time in his last start this season. Although the Rockies beat the Padres 10-9 at Coors Field, he allowed six runs on six hits with four walks over 3 1/3 innings. He did not factor in the decision.

 866.
Kyle Tucker, Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña each hit a solo homer, helping Framber Valdez and the Astros beat the Colorado Rockies 8-2 on Sunday.

 867.

MEXICO CITY — Kyle Tucker and the Houston Astros had a very successful stay in Mexico City.

 868.
Tucker, Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña each hit a solo homer, helping Framber Valdez and the Astros beat the Colorado Rockies 8-2 on Sunday.

 869.
Tucker and Yainer Diaz each drove in two runs as Houston swept the two-game series at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium.

 870.
“The plan was to use the series as a springboard looking forward,” Astros manager Joe Espada said. “We want this series to be like a new beginning for us. We need to have more urgency.”

 871.
Valdez (1-0) pitched five innings of two-run ball in his first big league start since April 2. The left-hander allowed five hits, struck out six and walked none.

 872.
“He threw the ball well the first couple of innings,” Espada said. “Command was not there, but he settled in the third and he gave us five innings. It was encouraging to see the way he threw the ball.”

 873.
Valdez had been sidelined by elbow inflammation, one of several pitching injuries that had contributed to Houston’s 9-19 start. Justin Verlander is back, but the Astros are awaiting the return of José Urquidy, Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers Jr. at some point this season.

 874.
“When the rotation is healthy, we have proved that we can do great things in the postseason,” Espada said.

 875.
Elias Díaz had two hits for Colorado, and Sean Bouchard and Jacob Stallings each drove in a run. Austin Gomber (0-2) was charged with four runs and six hits in seven innings.

 876.
The Rockies have dropped 11 of 14 games.

 877.
“We have not played our best baseball and our record is indicative of that, but the players come with energy to compete. There has not been one sign of them not being happy,” manager Bud Black said. “We will continue to play hard.”

 878.
Houston had lost five in a row before arriving in Mexico City, scoring a total of 10 runs during the slide. But it fared much better at Alfredo Harp Helu, with its elevation of 7,349 feet.

 879.
Yordan Alvarez hit two homers and Tucker also went deep during Saturday’s 12-4 victory.

 880.
Tucker connected in the first inning in the finale of the two-game set. Altuve went deep in the third, and Peña hit his third homer in the fourth.

 881.
It was Houston’s second regular-season visit to Mexico. It swept two games in Monterrey against the Angels in May 2019.

 882.
The Astros also played exhibition games in Mexico against the Padres in 2016 and Marlins in 2004.

 883.
The Rockies also had played in Mexico before. They beat San Diego in Monterrey in their 1999 season opener.

 959.

MEXICO CITY — Yordan Alvarez hit two home runs, Kyle Tucker added a solo shot and the Houston Astros beat the Colorado Rockies 12-4 on Saturday night in the MLB World Tour: Mexico City Series to snap a five-game losing streak.

 960.
Alvarez hit a two-run homer to center field and Tucker followed with a shot to left field and the Astros took a 4-2 lead in the third. Alvarez hit his seventh home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning.

 961.
Alvarez went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Yainer Diaz had three hits and scored three runs.

 962.
Ronel Blanco (3-0) allowed two hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

 963.
The Rockies’ Cal Quantrill (0-3) allowed six hits and six earned runs in five innings.

 964.
Houston arrived in Mexico City after scoring just six runs in a three-game sweep at the hands of the Chicago Cubs, but the team took advantage of the 7,349-foot (2,240-meter) elevation of the Alfredo Harp Helu stadium to break the offensive slump with 15 hits against the Rockies.

 965.
The Rockies took the lead on Ryan McMahon’s two-run homer to center field in the bottom of the first.

 966.
The Astros pulled ahead for good 3-1 after Alvarez and Tucker hit homers in the third.

 967.
The series marks the Astros’ second regular-season visit to Mexico. In May 2019, they swept the Angels in two games played in Monterrey. The Astros also played exhibition games in Mexico against the Padres in 2016 and Marlins in 2004.

 968.
The Rockies, who came south of the border after beating the Padres 10-9 at Coors Field, have yet to win consecutive games this season, the longest such stretch to begin a season in franchise history.

 969.
Colorado played their second regular-season game in Mexico. In 1999, they beat San Diego in their season opener, also at Monterrey.

 970.
URQUIDY MISSES THE CHANCE

 971.
José Urquidy played with the Astros in a exhibition game against the San Diego Padres in Mexico City in 2016, but a right arm injury left him out of the series against the Colorado Rockies.

 972.
“Back then (2016) I was a kid just dreaming of playing in the majors. It was a long process for me to become a starter in the MLB, but I made it,” said Urquidy, who despite not being able to play was joined by family and friends.

 973.
The right-hander, who was born in Mazatlan, invited some of his closest friends, some of whom lack a visa to enter the United States and have never seen a major league game.

 1020.
“Even though I’m not playing, I’m happy for them to be able to watch a major league game live. We had a day off (Friday) and they get to know some of my teammates. I’m happy for them,” Urquidy said.

 1023.
Astros LHP Framber Valdez (0-0, 2.19 ERA) vs. Rockies LHP Austin Gomber (0-1, 4.32)

 1025.
TV: ESPN

 1026.
Radio: 850 AM/94.1 FM

 1027.
Gomber has been relatively reliable so far this season, allowing three earned runs or fewer in all but one of his five starts and tossing five innings or more each of his past three. The lefty was solid his last time out — a no decision vs. the Padres at Coors Field that saw him give up one run on four hits, three walks and two strikeouts in five innings of work. Gomber has faced the Astros twice, going 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

 1028.
Valdez, coming off back-to-back All-Star seasons, will make his first start since going on the injured list April 9 with left elbow inflammation. He was in complete command his last time out, tossing 7 2/3 innings of scoreless ball against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 2. He had five strikeouts without issuing a walk and allowed six hits. Valdez last faced Colorado in 2021 and is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA over two starts vs. the Rockies.
