As they aim to go up 3-0 in Game 3, here&apos;s a trifecta of observations from the opening round so far.</p><h2 id="so-far-so-very-good">So far, so very good</h2><p>The 2014 Western Conference Finals team led by Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook that won 59 games somehow never led a series 2-0. The infamous 2016 OKC team that was up 3-1 on the Warriors didn&#x2019;t do it. The 2024 Thunder has already won more playoff games than the Russ MVP squad and the Russ/PG13 team eliminated by Dame&#x2019;s bad shot in 2019. In two games, the new era Big 3 has won as many playoff games as the Carmelo Anthony was a part of the OK3 in 2018.</p><p>Here are more fun numbers after Game 2:</p><ul><li>OKC&#x2019;s 124-92 win in Game 2 is the biggest margin of victory so far in the 2024 playoffs.</li><li>Every single one of the Thunder&#x2019;s 124 points were scored by a player aged 25 or younger. First time that&#x2019;s ever happened in NBA history.</li><li>Chet Holmgren became the first rookie with 15 points on 100% shooting in any playoff quarter in the last 25 years. Chet is also the first rookie with 15 points in a first quarter in the last 25 years.</li></ul><p>It&#x2019;s only a two game sample size against a team missing their best player, but the Pelicans are still a good team without Zion Williamson. And so far, neither inexperience nor the bright lights of the playoffs have seemed to be a factor for the youngest #1 seed in NBA history. Despite the hot take narrative, the Thunder through two games are thoroughly beating the &#x201C;weakest #1 seed of all time&#x201D; allegations.</p><hr><h2 id="the-big-3-4">The Big <s>3</s> 4</h2><p>Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has looked every bit the part of a top-3 MVP finalist so far in the playoffs. The NBA Twitter accounts that said SGA&#x2019;s game wouldn&#x2019;t translate to the postseason have gone awfully quiet. Chet Holmgren has been absolutely dominant on both sides of the court. His rim protection was key in Game 1 and his scoring was key in Game 2. Chet with rest is a different beast. Jalen Williams has continued his transformation into an NBA star. Shaq, a notorious young player skeptic, was fawning over JDub on national TV: &#x201C;You a bad boy, Jalen.&#x201D;&#xA0;</p><p>But let&#x2019;s hear it for Lu Dort.</p><p>The Thunder absolutely do not win Game 1 without Dort&#x2019;s smothering defense on Brandon Ingram. Luguentz held BI to only 12 points on 5-17 shooting in the first matchup. In Game 2, Dort scored 15 points, hit 4 of 6 three pointers and just made Ingram give up trying to score in the first half. As our pod crew pointed out following Game 1, OKC relied on two rookies to make winning plays in a playoff game. <em>For the one seed. </em>No one on the team has looked scared so much as over amped so far. Will the team play with a little more composure now that they everyone has their first postseason game under their belt?</li><li><strong>What&apos;s working. </strong>The Thunder put the clamps on Brandon Ingram and the Pelicans offense (97.9 ORTG) in Game 1. New Orleans has an admirably resilient roster, so OKC will need to maintain their physicality and intensity to keep them in check.</li><li><strong>Rebounding. </strong>I would be bored talking about boards if second-chance points weren&apos;t single-handedly turning easy wins into nail-biters for OKC. Angst from OKC&apos;s fanbase is echoing the concerns the Thunder faithful have had all season: the rotation is too deep, Josh Giddey complicates the on-court dynamics more than he helps them, and the missing frontcourt piece has yet to be acquired or developed enough for primetime.</p><p>I&apos;m not here to hector anyone&apos;s postseason overreactions. A loud win, both on the court and in the stands, would be a good way to start quieting concerns about the #1 seed&apos;s inexperience.</li><li><strong>Mr. Consistent. </strong>Plenty of unpredictable stuff will happen during the postseason. Regardless of how role players, random bounces, horrible calls, and coaching schemes materialize, the Thunder&apos;s hopes will be riding shotgun with their MVP candidate steering. First off, Jalen Williams saved OKC from arguably their most embarrassing loss of the season. (And in hindsight, saved OKC from losing the #1 seed). Secondly, it was further proof that the Thunder had a special second scoring option emerging. Third, it showed the Thunder&#x2019;s #1 scoring option superstar was willing to be a decoy on a game-winning shot for the good of the team. </p><h2 id="8-mark-daigneault-wins-nbca%E2%80%99s-coach-of-the-year">8. Mark Daigneault wins NBCA&#x2019;s Coach of the Year</h2><p>Look, I get that this isn&#x2019;t the big, official COTY award. And I get that it&#x2019;s a postseason-announced award and this is a regular season wrap up. But the results were announced before OKC even knows their Round 1 opponent, so I&#x2019;m counting it. Even after Chet Holmgren was declared out for the season after suffering a foot injury in the summer league, Presti began to forecast brighter days ahead.</p><p>In his pre-season availability before the 2022-23 season, Presti was gushing about the roster and the mindset of the players. He knew he had talent on the roster and that the development paths were aligning. And if the young core could have their prime years overlap?</p><blockquote>I think we have a chance to be pretty good.</blockquote><p>This afternoon, OKC will play with a chance to secure the top spot in the Western Conference and guarantee home-court advantage through the Western Conference Finals. The Thunder needs a few things to go its way to lock in the #1 seed, but there will be home games in Oklahoma City. The Thunder will have home court advantage at least in the first round. The team is, as Presti might say, &#x201C;pretty good.&#x201D;</p><p>Looking back to that pre-season press conference in September 2022, Presti shared a story about an interaction he had in the Oklahoma City airport.</p><blockquote>I was walking through the airport the other day, and I was just walking, and someone yelled from behind me, &#x201C;Thunder Up!&#x201D;. God, that made me feel good. It made me feel really good. What it made me feel is God, I want this &#x2013; I really want the people here to experience another postseason.</blockquote><p>Just three years removed from a 22-win season, two years removed from a 24-win season, and one year removed from a quick ouster from the play-in tournament, Sam Presti has the team primed for another postseason.</p><p>Thunder Up, Sam.</p>]]></content:encoded></item></channel></rss>
