Although the ongoing public health emergency was an impetus for this move, it also builds on Preslar Art Initiatives’ shift of focus since last year, to build a wider audience.

Setting up a virtual gallery that offers an immersive experience that replicates a real-life art walk can be challenging.

Fortunately, I have found a perfect off-the-shelf solution.

Second Life was one of the original 3D virtual world, with history dating back to 2003. In the mid-2000s, many universities, cultural institutions, religious organizations and corporations established their presence in Second Life. While its popularity has faded as they have moved on to social media a few years since, Second Life still remains a vibrant platform for creators. There is even an officially-sanctioned Burning Man regional event in Second Life, which has gained a lot of attendees this year due to cancellations of Burning Man and its regionals.

I have rented an inexpensive, furnished cottage with a lovely view.

We are having our very first virtual reception on Saturday, June 13, from 8 to 9 p.m., Pacific Time.

The gallery is located at Grote (53, 38, 55) on Heterocera continent in Second Life’s main grid.

Sign up for a Second Life account

Download and install a viewer such as Firestorm viewer

Watch this tutorial if you’re a first-timer.

https://medium.com/media/34fac94d3229f55c855704a515d76de7/href

Hanging art in virtual space was originally published in Preslar Art Initiatives on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

This year, almost all Pride parades and events have been called off due to COVID-19. For many in the LGBTQ+ community, the annual Pride is something they look forward to every year, a family reunion of a sort, and a celebration of the communities’ resilience and strengths.

Since time immemorial, rainbows were seen as a universal symbol of hope, good fortune, divine messages and eternal life — a bridge between this world and the otherworld. In the ancient Sumerian mythology, a rainbow points to the tree of immortality. In the Hebrew Scriptures, the rainbow is a symbol of God’s promise. In Greek mythology, Iris is the messenger between gods and the human kind. In Irish legends, a rainbow leads people to a pot of gold. In many indigenous cultures, from the Americas to South Pacific to Siberia, rainbows hold special meanings as a nexus between this world and the world of the divine spirits.

We now live in a confusing time, bombarded with depressing news 24/7. Even in the midst of this global emergency, people are divided and polarized by political ideologies, religious beliefs, and competing economic interests. It’s challenging to hold onto hope these days, and this is particularly true for those on the margins of society.

This year, Preslar Art Initiatives invites artists to imagine the “other end of a rainbow.”

It could be a vision for a different, better world. It could be a memory of your loved one who passed away (because of COVID-19 or otherwise) to the other side of the rainbow bridge. Or, it can be a celebration of our resilience in spite of the crisis — so many great projects have come out of our communities and many in the LGBTQ+ community are at the forefront of them! The theme is to be loosely and liberally interpreted according to your imagination.

Deadline: Friday, July 31, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (same time zone as San Francisco and Vancouver).

Who can enter: Anyone from anywhere in the world (except for Cuba, Iran, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and Syria).

Medium: Any that can be rendered and displayed digitally in a standard Web browser environment (must be mobile-friendly). It can be photographs (JPEG, WebP), photographs of 2D artwork, photographs of 3D artwork, vector drawings (SVG), raster images (JPEG, GIF, PNG, WebP), or even audio and videos and films (videos should be hosted on YouTube, Vimeo, Bitchute, DTube, etc. and should be embeddable on Web pages; audio should be hosted on Soundcloud or similar services).

Selection of artwork: This will be an open-call, non-juried exhibit. However, the curator reserves all rights to reject any artwork deemed obscene, inappropriate, or of low quality. The curator’s decision is final on this matter. This exhibit will be viewable by people around the world and by people from many different cultural norms, and should be also considered all-ages and family-friendly. In other words, no violence, no pornography, and no hate speech, among others. While we hope to include as many artworks as practically possible, if we receive too many entries we may need to be selective and may further limit the number of artwork exhibited per artist, and/or reject some artwork.

How to submit: Send an email to preslarart at protonmail dot com, with the following:

Your contact information: name, pronoun(s), email address

A brief artist’s statement (up to 750 words)

Up to 10 pieces of art you wish to exhibit. If you are submitting audio or video, upload to sites such as Soundcloud and YouTube and provide direct URLs in the email.

Entry fee: Taking into account that many people are currently unemployed, the entry fee is “name your entry fee” or “pay what you can.” Suggested $5-$25 USD per artist. PayPal, money order (from the U.S. only — sorry, no personal or business checks), and cryptocurrency (BTC, LTC, ETH, BCH, DOGE and XLM only) are accepted.

How your art will be exhibited: We will be creating a special virtual exhibit site, as well as an immersive virtual gallery experience in Second Life and OpenSim. The latter will only contain visual, two-dimensional works. Considering the time it takes to put these together, we anticipate to open this exhibit on Saturday, Aug. 8.

Copyright stuff: By entering this exhibit, all artists expressly agree to grant a perpetual, non-transferable, non-exclusive, and non-assignable license to Preslar Art Initiatives to reproduce and publish their work. The exhibit opens on June 6.

It is April already and as I have promised last autumn when I announced the hiatus through March 30, 2020, I am writing this to announce the opening of the 2020 season of the Preslar Art Initiative.

Needless to say, life happens and things often do not work out as planned. I was writing a completely different version of this announcement about four weeks ago and now I have to redo the whole thing.

But I also tend to value reason over emotionalism and also tend to see the positives in everything.

During this time of so-called social distancing measures, many of us are adjusting into a new routine and new rhythms of life. Streets and cities are eerily quiet and vacant. Many activities we used to take for granted have ceased.

This time, however, calls us to be more creative and to see the world in a new, different way.

In a sense, we are in a kind of collective metamorphosis. We’re in a chrysalis awaiting to emerge and fly into the sky.

The question is: How will we act today so that when we emerge from this, we will be stronger and greater? What can we do today to prepare for the next stage in history? This may also be a time to look inwards and reflect. Not everything has to be active, busy, crowded, and loud.

On this note, I am announcing Preslar Art Initiative’s spring call for art!

This will be a virtual exhibit with a global audience — that’s going to be our biggest art show ever! We are now a gallery (and more!) without walls and borders! And what better way to celebrate the grand re-opening of PAI with this virtual exhibit?

Call for art

Theme: Metamorphosis

Deadline: Thursday, May 14, 2020, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (that’s same time zone as Vancouver and San Francisco).

Who can enter: Anyone from anywhere in the world (except for Cuba, Iran, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and Syria).

Medium: Any that can be rendered and displayed digitally in a standard Web browser environment (must be mobile-friendly). Due to a series of incidents, as you may have read here in the past, the 2019 season has been chaotic and lacklustre at best. We held a small number of exhibits and a few were cancelled or rescheduled. The gallery was underperforming, and the location and venue are far from ideal or accessible. As such, this spring I announced the closure of the gallery and launch of the Preslar Art Initiatives, a new fine art program that would no longer be restricted to any particular venue.

This spring and summer have passed, and personally, many of the things that happened around me and in my life had taken a severe toll on my mental health. It also compelled me to rethink and reassess what my priorities were, and what really matters to me.

This autumn I am switching gears and working on big projects that are non-art related, but something I believe to make positive impacts in this world.

This means I won’t be able to invest much time or labor into the Preslar Art Initiatives until at least the spring of 2020. And it would not be fair to artists or audience.

Accordingly, I am suspending the operations of the Preslar Art Initiatives for six months, through March 31, 2020.

Furthermore, I envision the 2020 season to be less focused on exhibits and more on workshops or a conference/retreat.

One of the ideas I am playing with is a summer weekend of open-air art festival featuring sculptures, installations, and vendor spaces. Admittedly this will be a far larger undertaking than I am capable of organizing, so I will be seeking committed volunteers some time starting in the early days of 2020.

All updates will be posted on PAI’s official Mastodon channel, https://fimidi.com/@preslarart and Twitter @preslarart.

October update: Preslar Art Initiatives is suspending its operations, focusing on planning for an… was originally published in Preslar Art Initiatives on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

It has been cooler and wetter this year. I have personally taken a hiatus from most of my projects during the last two months, and I am still slowly recovering from a period of trial this early summer.

The last time I wrote anything on this, I announced the shift from the Preslar Gallery to the new Preslar Art Initiatives, which would be less centered around the monthly exhibits at a fixed location.

With all honesty, I have put the Preslar Art Initiatives on the back burner. I did not really have enough spoons left to manage PAI when my life was falling apart, my mental health was catastrophic, and everything was uncertain. I cannot commit to fulfilling the promises I made in May for the foreseeable future.

October/November pop-up exhibit (cancelled)

Edit (Oct. 2, 2019): This event will not be held. Please read the article dated Oct. 2, 2019 for details.

However, I would like to put on one more pop-up exhibit this year, during the months of October and November, on the themes around Halloween. You can be pretty imaginative about interpreting the “Halloween theme”: you don’t have to make it all about ghosts or death or horror. I encourage you to expand your thinking on this after you do some research on the history and symbolism of Halloween. It can be about reconnecting with one’s ancestry (and by extension, your cultural and ethnic roots); about the concept of “thin space” in the Celtic mythology; or about celebrations of harvest (remember: this exhibit will run through November, so think Thanksgiving also!); or just about the changing seasons, darkening skies, and cooler air.

This exhibit will be a “hybrid”: There will be a physical-space pop-up exhibit, and also there will be a digital art zine for everyone to enjoy.

To enter, follow these submission guidelines:

I, the curator, will be selecting up to five artists on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Deadline for entry is Wednesday, Sept. 25, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time. No exceptions.

Entry must be made by email, including the following:

Subject line: “Autumn pop-up exhibit submission”

In the body text of email (do not attach PDF or Microsoft Word doc), in plain text only: (a) Your name; (b) Your email address; (c) Your phone number; (d) a brief artist’s statement (between 250 and 750 words).

Attach at least three images of your recent artwork. (They do not have to be the ones you intend to exhibit.) Maximum image size: 500 kB each. Please use Optimizilla if your pictures are bigger than that.

There is an entry fee of $40 if you are selected. There is no entry fee for those who are not selected for this show.

All artwork must be two-dimensional, with maximum width of 48 inches and maximum height of 36 inches, wired and ready to hang.

All artwork must be appropriate for an all-ages setting and tasteful. The curator reserves the right to determine what is acceptable and reject any art that is deemed inappropriate. The curator’s decision is final.

Email: http://scr.im/462r

Pop-up exhibit location: Alice Tarbell Cultural Space, 32180 Pittsburg Road, Saint Helens, Oregon.

Art as activism and social practice

Another thing that I am thinking more about lately is to use fine art as a way to create a space for activism and cultural shift.

One theme that I hope to build on over the coming months is to transform the marginalized narratives that are often made invisible by the mainstream society.

I am not necessarily thinking strictly in terms of art exhibits, open-calls, or even art books. In fact, I am not even thinking along the line of having “public” events or shows. In the present political and social climate, not everything should be out in the open for public consumption. But I’d like to create a series of closed intentional spaces where the marginalized voices find their expressions and power, and participants’ creativity is inspired.

This is, admittedly, still a vague idea. I’ll let you know more about this.

September update from the Preslar Art Initiatives was originally published in Preslar Art Initiatives on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Now it is shapeshifting into a new form.

Earlier, I made an announcement regarding the closure of the Preslar Gallery effective June 30, 2019. Due to the lack of eligible and qualified entries for the previously scheduled LGBTQ+ Pride Month community exhibit, I am officially ending the Preslar Gallery’s operations in its present form effective Saturday, May 31, 2019 instead.

Having this said, I have revisited the original mission and purposes of the gallery and reassessed how the gallery had fulfilled them during the last one-and-a-quarter years. Despite all the good intentions, it has fallen far short of its goals.

The format of an art gallery located inside a remote retreat center that wasn’t always open to the public posed practical problems. In addition, in spite of several attempts, nothing seemed to have offered sufficient incentives for visitors to come see the artworks.

Taking lessons from all these experiences, I am today announcing the metamorphosis of the Preslar Gallery.

On Saturday, June 1, the Preslar Gallery will reestablish itself as the Preslar Art Initiatives (PAI).

The PAI will continue its mission of promoting the emerging fine art talents of the Pacific Northwest and supporting the entrepreneurial approach to art, in honor of its namesake’s (the late Floy Preslar) legacy.

There will be, initially, two components to the work of PAI:

A quarterly, digital art magazine featuring visual arts, as well as artist interviews and papers on the topics related to art as social practice.

A virtual art gallery on Second Life and/or OSgrid.

The magazine will be published as follows:

Autumn 2019 (release late September): “Metamorphosis”

Winter 2019 (release late December): “Reignition”

Spring 2020 (release late March): “Truth, Beauty, and Goodness”

Summer 2020 (release late June): “Play and Innocence”

If you are interested in participating in any of the upcoming issues, contact me by email.

The Second Annual Queer Art Party in the Woods

The Queer Art Party in the woods will return to Estancia Serenova this year, on Friday, June 14 through Saturday, June 15 (with optional camping possible through Sunday, June 16)— just in time for the Portland Pride weekend! It will be a celebration of LGBTQ+ artists, and it will offer a slower-paced break from the urban noises. This event offers several open-ended opportunities to inspire creativity and collaborations, including beautiful woodland settings for plein air and open photo shoots! Additional activities are possible as the day approaches. The Friday evening will be a community potluck (we have BBQ!).

Bring your own art supplies, musical instruments, etc. We will also have a space where you can display and/or sell your artwork, craft, zines, and so on.

This will be a low-key, open-ended event.

This year, I will be asking for a suggested donation of $10 to $20 per person (no one is turned away for the lack of funds). Bring your own tent and any necessary camping gear. If you’d rather prefer an indoor accommodation, it will be available at a standard price from the retreat center.

To sign up for the art party: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/queer-art-party-in-the-woods-2019-tickets-62618520681

(If, for some reason, you cannot use Eventbrite, please email me.)

Summer pop-up exhibits

The Preslar Art Initiatives will be having one or two summer “pop-up” exhibit(s) at Estancia Serenova. For the last couple of months, I have been considering whether to discontinue the gallery due to less-than-desirable level of traffic and low sales figures. This season, two shows had to be also cancelled. While the gallery was able to operate at cost thanks to administrative fees assessed on the artists, this situation has become indefensible, and it has not been entirely fair to the artists, either.

It has also come to my attention recently that Estancia Serenova Retreat Center, Inc., which currently hosts the gallery in one of its buildings, is now seeking a new location that is more manageable and closer to Portland. This also means it is likely that the retreat center will go on a hiatus for a period of time, thus I cannot guarantee anything past the end of July.

For these two reasons, I have determined to suspend the gallery programs until further notice, upon the conclusion of the July 2019 exhibit and programming. While it is part of my plan to reopen the gallery at Estancia Serenova’s new location, I am also exploring other opportunities for curation and bringing artists together, maybe in partnership with coffee houses or bookstores.

On a different note, during the past one and a half years of running the gallery, the work of curating the gallery really took me away from creating my own art. Unfortunately, as much as I loved putting together the exhibits and hosting events, art became something I dread, just another “work” to make a little bit of money to get by, repositioning my artistic career as if that’s just part of my other business endeavors. It has not been healthy for me, and it has not been fair for me, either.

If you are one of the artists scheduled to exhibit later this year, I will be contacting you in the next week or so when I have more details. The call for artists for the June exhibit remains open as scheduled (deadline is May 22), and the second annual Queer Art Party will be held as scheduled (June 14–16).

Thank you all for your support so far, it has been a pleasure for me to bring such a diverse and talented pool of emerging artists from as far out as Edmonds, Washington to this humble place. I’ve enjoyed meeting each and all of them.

Best regards,

Willow

Edit (May 29, 2019): We have not been able to get response from April Mitchell. Accordingly, we are not extending the gallery’s operations through July.

Edit (May 21, 2019): Earlier version of this story stated that the gallery will suspend its operations effective June 30. It looks like the retreat center will remain open until mid-August. We will be having the July exhibit, featuring April Mitchell.

A note from the curator was originally published in Preslar Art Initiatives on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
