20.
How did we do?

Every now and then we try to hold ourselves accountable for the things we put out into the world on this here wonderful site. Most times though? We just forget and things go out into the ether never to return. Today is one of the times we are going to look back at what we predicted preseason.

 21.
Jumbo Hereos:

 22.
Here’s what I said prior to the start of the season:

 23.

 24.
Over the last few years when I did a podcast with Casey now at Boiler Upload he’s been the one who has always convinced me that Purdue was a final four team. I struggled to believe it for a number of reasons but one of those is of course the snake-bit life of a Purdue fan. This season though, I think it’s different. Zach Edey has returned and he’s angry. Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer have returned a year older and a year wiser. Then, there’s the addition of guys like Lance Jones and Myles Colvin. Purdue was close last year. I know the Fairleigh Dickinson loss didn’t show that, but the PK tournament did, the way they ran through their conference slate did.

 25.
If you know me personally, or listen to my various podcast appearances, you’ll know I’m a sucker for an emotional sports story. Ted Lasso was perfect to me. I love that show and will take any chance I get to evangelize for it. Things didn’t always end perfectly for AFC Richmond and that was okay, because ultimately, that’s life. Right now I am loving Welcome to Wrexham. Two soccer shows, and I don’t even really like soccer. Maybe it’s the sentimentality of these shows that makes me think the streak will end. Maybe it’s the Hollywood ending I dream of. Or maybe it’s just the black and old gold glasses clouding my vision. Either way, I believe.

 26.
The new additions will be enough. Purdue is making the Final Four this year (technically in 2024 but you get what I mean). The streak finally ends.

 27.

 28.
I called Purdue making the Final Four and of course I was right. Perhaps it’s one of those things where if you predict the same thing over and over again you’re bound to be right but as the years since 1980 showed us, you just never know if a team can make it back to the Final Four even with a good team. What a moment it was for Purdue to make the Final Four and I’m proud to say that just like AFC Richmond and Ted Lasso himself I always Believed in Believe.

 29.
Jed:

 30.
Here’s what Jed said in the preseason:

 31.

 32.
A Final Four is probably the easy way out here so let’s dig a little deeper here.

 33.
I think Purdue will win the B1G again by at least two games and then win the B1G Tourney to go back to back x2, a feat that has never been done in the history of the conference.

 34.
I’ll also say that Braden Smith ends up averaging 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal which would make him a First Team All B1G. If Purdue goes back to back and Smith had a season like that, it would be very hard to ignore.

 35.

 36.
Jed was right about the Big Ten title as Purdue won the conference by three games. He was wrong on the Big Ten Tournament title though so that’s a ding against him. As far as Braden Smith, he wound up averaging 12 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 7.5 apg, and 1.6 steals per game. So Jed missed only on the points per game there. Not bad I’d say.

 37.
Gabi:

 38.
Though Gabi has moved on from the site I still think it’s worth it to show how she did in the preseason:

 39.

Alright, here’s my bold prediction for this Purdue basketball season. I think we’re going to see more losses than we expect. We might stumble a bit out of the gate, drop a few games we probably shouldn’t. It’s not that we don’t have the talent - we do. But with all the hype and high expectations, I can see us getting a bit rattled early on. I also can see Edey’s game averages dip a bit. Why? Well, I think we’re going to be playing a smaller rotations against other smaller rotations, and that means a few less minutes for him on the court. But don’t panic, I don’t think this going to be a drastic change or a bad thing. In fact, I think these early struggles are going to be the making of us. We’ll learn from our mistakes, and grow stronger throughout the season. We’ll get it right when it matters most and start winning when it counts. And that’s when we’ll start our march to the Final Four. Yeah, you heard me. I’m predicting that this is the year the Boilers finally make it to the Final Four. Maybe I’m just manifesting, but gosh dang it after last year I need a redemption season.

 40.
I’d say she nailed the, we might drop a few games we probably shouldn’t. However, Edey’s ppg went up from 22.3 to 25.2. His rebounds did go down slightly from 12.9 to 12.2. Of course we did make the Final Four. Pretty good set of predictions overall.

 41.
Ryan:

 42.
Here’s Ryan’s bold predictions prior to the season:

 43.

As much as I would like to boldly predict that Purdue will make the Final Four or Zach Edey will shoot and make a 3 this season, I want to focus elsewhere. I think Lance Jones comes in and makes a big impact, especially on defense. Purdue has had mixed luck bringing in top scorers from smaller programs because moving up to this level is a whole new beast. Lance Jones is a defensive gamer though and I think that translates better between small and large programs. I predict that Lance Jones will make the Big Ten All-Defensive Team this season (alongside Zach Edey).

 44.
Lance Jones obviously came in and made a huge impact on the team, there’s no debate there. However, he did not make the Big Ten All Defense Team. Zach Edey did though. So overall not too shabby.

 45.

 64.

 65.
 66.
More than just a national title game run made for a memorable season for the Boilers

The 2023-2024 season was the most successful one in the history of the men’s basketball program for the Purdue Boilermakers. There is little to no argument of that statement given the amount of individual and team records that the team was able to accomplish on their way to a national title game appearance. It was the first appearance for the Boilers since Rick Mount led the Boilers to the title game against the UCLA Bruins in 1969.

 67.
Led by Zach Edey, the Boilers set the season record for wins in a season with 34. This broke the previous record of 30 that was set in the 2017-2018 season. The mark of an 87.2% (34-5) winning percentage is the second highest in program history since 1939, ranking behind only the 1987-1988 mark of 87.9% (29-4). They also went 17-3 in B1G Conference play, the first time the program had won 17 games in a single conference season and marked the second consecutive season they had won the conference by three games.

 68.
Purdue again achieved a number one ranking during the regular season, their third consecutive season doing so. That is the first time in B1G history a school has achieved that mark. It also achieved a second straight No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tourney, the fifth time that has happened in program history. The Boilers also joined only Kansas as programs to have received a top-5 seed in the NCAA Tourney in each of the last eight installments. Standing out over those last eight seasons is that Purdue has a dominating hold over the B1G conference with a 113-42 record, 16 games better than second place Michigan State (97-58).

 69.
Statistically speaking, Purdue set a number of team records as well. The Boilers set a record for points scored (3,211), rebound margin (+11.2), assists (720), assist to turnover ratio (1.63), field goals made (1,109), free throws made (675), and free throws attempted (938). The Boilers also shot the ball incredibly well from behind the arc going 40.4% as a team from three point range. As good as that is, it still ranks only 4th best all time in program history.

 70.
Individually, the records and awards start with one of the best college basketball players of all time: Zach Edey. The Boiler big man was named the first back to back unanimous National Player of the Year since Bill Walton 50 years ago. Edey also became the first player since Oscar Robertson in 1960 to lead the country in scoring and reach the Final Four in the same season. He also set a B1G record of 12 career B1G Player of the Week honors.

 71.

 72.

 73.
For the 1️⃣2️⃣th time in his career…

Zach Edey has been named Big Ten Player of the Week.

: 2-0 record.
: 26.5 PPG, 11.0 RPG, 3.0 APG, 2.5 BPG.
: 12 weekly honors in last 34 weeks dating to last year. pic.twitter.com/v6IfmySvxf
— Purdue Men's Basketball (@BoilerBall) March 11, 2024
 74.

 75.
 76.
 77.

 78.
From a statistical standpoint, Edey scored 983 points and grabbed 474 rebounds, the second most in those regards in B1G history and joining only Elvin Hayes of Houston with those numbers in a single season. In terms of rebounding, Edey holds two of the five best single rebounding seasons in B1G history with Jerry Lucas holding the other three. The 983 points is the 22nd best single scoring season in NCAA history. His 30 double-doubles ranks fourth all time in a single season as well.

 79.
Edey finished his career at Purdue as one of only eight players ever in NCAA history to have at least 2,500 points and 1,300 rebounds and the first since 1987-1990 from La Salle’s Lionel Simmons. His 177 points scored in the 2024 NCAA Tourney are tied for second most during a tourney and his 87 rebounds was the eighth best mark. In doing so, Edey became the first player in NCAA Tourney history to have seven straight games of 20 points and 10 rebounds, leading the second best mark set by David Robinson by two games.

 80.
As the most prominent of all of these records, Edey also became the program’s all time leader in points scored (2,516) and total rebounds (1,321), passing the likes of all time legends in Rick Mount and Joe Barry Carroll. Edey has already had his name placed into the rafters as a two time consensus first team All American and two time National Player of the Year.

Seriously, you get a better sense of what he was able to accomplish by going through what Chris Forman put together there. Edey should be in the discussion for top 10 greatest college basketball players of all time, and I think he’d be closer to the top than you think.

 89.

 90.

 91.
The final tally of Zach Edey's career.

: https://t.co/72HJ8j5l3v pic.twitter.com/qd4lHFyuCe
— Purdue Men's Basketball (@BoilerBall) April 30, 2024

 94.
 95.

 96.
Braden Smith also broke some records as he became the single season B1G leader in assists with 292, breaking Michigan State’s Cassius Winston’s mark. His 292 assists are the eighth most by any player this century and the third most for a player in their first two seasons in NCAA history. Smith also ranks 10th in NCAA history in total assists in a players first two seasons with 447 behind players such as Jay Williams, Ja Morant, Jason Kidd, and T.J. Ford (among others).

 97.
The sophomore point guard also became just the second player in NCAA History with at least 450 points, 275 assists, and 200 rebounds in a single season joining BYU’s Kyle Collinsworth. When you drop the assist numbers down to 250, that includes only Magic Johnson as B1G players to ever reach those marks.

 98.

 99.

 100.
Only 2 players in Big Ten history have had at least: 450 points, 250 assists,
and 200 rebounds in a single season

✅: 2023-24 -- Braden Smith
✅: 1978-79 -- Magic Johnson pic.twitter.com/ADQPgZ2FbT
— Sean Morton (@seany_mcbuckets) April 3, 2024

 103.
 104.

 105.
Lance Jones’ 80 made three pointers tied him for 12th place all time in program history while Mason Gillis’ 46.8% from behind the arc rank him fifth best in program history. Gillis’ career 3pt percentage of 40.7% place him seventh all time.

 106.

 107.
*Thanks to Chris Forman for putting together most of the statistics in this article. Forman continues to be one of the best communications directors in the NCAA.

 133.
 134.

 135.
The buzz around the program is at its highest since the 2012 Season, when the Doug Schreiber-led Boilermakers went a program-best, 45-14 and finished as the Big Ten Champions.

 136.
Now, led by Coach Greg Goff, in his 5th season, he has continued to build the program through recruiting and retaining players in West Lafayette.

 137.
The team is led by their big-hitting first baseman, Luke Gaffney. Gaffney, who is hitting .412 on the season, with 60 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .727, is only a redshirt freshman. He and smooth-hitting catcher, Connor Caskenette, a senior, have launched 12 home runs and added his own 60 RBIs to this year’s team.

 138.
Georgia transfer, Luke Wagner, has been one of the best pitchers on this loaded staff. While boasting an ERA of just over 5, Luke is 7-0 on the season in 11 appearances.

 139.
But, what matters now, is how the Boilermakers close the season. Today is the eve of the program's most important series in the last 10 years.

 140.
This weekend, Alexander Field will need everyone there as Purdue hosts our beloved Rivals, the Indiana Hoosiers, who have been the most consistent baseball team in the state for the past decade.

 143.
The Streak surged us into 1st Place

Now we ride the Momentum into the most significant series at Alexander since sweeping Michigan to end the 2018 regular season. #BoilerUp

Tickets vs IU: https://t.co/9RdAwcSWVB pic.twitter.com/CaK8ZskpjU
— Purdue Baseball (@PurdueBaseball) May 2, 2024

 146.
 147.

 148.
IU is only one game behind Purdue for the lead in the Big Ten Conference. Win two of three and the Boilermakers can stretch that lead to three. Drop two of three, and they will be tied with the Hoosiers, all while watching what Illinois does against Ohio State.

 149.
Purdue and Illinois are tied at the top of the Big Ten, with an 11-4 record. Indiana, Michigan, and Nebraska are all tied for 2nd with a 10-5 Big Ten Record.

 150.
The next three weekends are vital to Purdue’s NCAA Tournament hopes. After hosting IU this weekend, the Boilers will travel to Michigan, then close the season out at Alexander by hosting Illinois the following weekend.

 151.
The momentum from the Basketball season has carried over to the baseball program, and I have to say, this squad has been one of the most fun teams I have ever watched at Alexander Field.

 152.
Join the baseball team this weekend, a weekend in which they expect a record crowd at Alexander Field... just days after setting the record for attendance.

 177.

 178.
 179.
What will the move be?

The transfer portal for men’s basketball has opened and closed. No Purdue player who was expected to stay has entered their name. Purdue saw Mason Gillis and Ethan Morton head out the door, but their years at Purdue were numbered already and they graduated and went through senior day festivities. They are only able to continue playing due to the Covid year and Matt Painter knew this was going to happen. That’s why he signed a 6 six player freshman class. However, just five scholarships are available heading into next season. So, what now?

 180.
Well, right up front, the first thing I want to say is that I will not be speculating on specific players here, only the ways in which this situation gets resolved. Right now Purdue has 8 players on scholarship that are returning from the National Championship game team: Caleb Furst, Brian Waddell, TKR, Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, Will Berg, Camden Heide, Myles Colvin. That’s three returning starters for Purdue and a number of guys poised to have big opportunities at minutes. But that’s 8, an important number here. The NCAA allows just 13 players to be on scholarship in men’s basketball. A bit of quick math here tells me that this means Purdue has five scholarships open. But didn’t I just say that Matt Painter has signed a six man freshman class? Yes, I did say that. And it has the added benefit of being true. Purdue has signed: Jack Benter, Raleigh Burgess, Kanon Catchings, C.J. Cox, Gicarri Harris, and Daniel Jacobsen. So, 8+6=14 and 14>13. Matt Painter has a few options before next season starts.

 181.
The first was the one that most of us felt was most likely and that was someone hits the transfer portal in the offseason. That hasn’t happened. It’s not as if we wanted to lose someone, but it’s just the nature of college basketball. Players leave. They look for greener pastures whether that be for a coach they gel with or for more minutes. It’s 2024, we know how this works. With no player entering the transfer portal there are still other ways that a player can leave but they are less likely. Someone could head down a level and transfer later on. That way they would be eligible to play right away. This also seems unlikely.

 182.
Next, one of the incoming freshman could not join the team next season. This could happen through a decommitment or heading to prep school. Keep in mind we are not saying that this will happen, I’m just laying out ways that this can happen. Getting out of a signed letter of intent is a bit harder than getting out of a verbal commitment that, quite frankly, isn’t worth the storage it took on the cloud, but it does happen. Next, one of Purdue’s incoming freshman could decide/agree that a year of extra seasoning is what they need and head to prep school. Personally, I’ve always been a bit hazy on how prep schools work because like, what’s the point of them? These are kids who have already graduated high school and who spend a year doing...what exactly? I understand heading to one if there is an academic issue, but that’s not the case for any of these incoming guys and so it’s almost like going to a fifth year of high school just because. I know they can earn college credits at many if not most prep schools but it still takes a lot of sacrifice to be willing to defer everything for one more year. But sacrifice has been so much a part of the Purdue basketball program that it wouldn’t be hugely shocking to see someone do this, but the incoming class is so good I’m not sure who you convince to do this.

 183.
The next option is that a scholarship player goes off scholarship and frees one up for an incoming recruit. You’ve seen these stories I’m sure of a player giving up his scholarship to a walk-on who is really deserving and generally has a heartwarming story you’d see on College Gameday maybe narrated by Tom Rinaldi. This happened in 2023 at Eastern Michigan. Much like the above scenario with an incoming player agreeing to go to prep school this would take a huge sacrifice from a current player and their family. Purdue isn’t cheap I don’t care if you’re in state or out of state or international. College is expensive. When my son was born I had a 529 college savings plan opened before he turned a month old and I’ve been saving in it every month for nearly four years now. It would certainly make for an incredible story and could be combined with the next aspect to lessen the blow.

 184.
There’s an episode of South Park from years ago about Underpants Gnomes who steal your underwear and then ??? and then profit. That’s basically this solution. Someone gives up their scholarship whether that be a current player or an incoming one...NIL...open scholarship with no pain for anyone at all. Now, how would this work? Would this run afoul of the NCAA or Big Ten in any way? How would you guarantee the funds since technically the school cannot pay the players? These are all good questions that I’m sure people in these positions have answers to, but that I don’t have the expertise for. However, I’m sure it’s been discussed.

 185.
So there you have it. Those are the options available to Purdue men’s basketball and head coach Matt Painter. We’ve not heard anything concrete about which way this will go, only rumors from certain people. However, as I stated above since these are about real people with real families and friends I personally won’t be speculating. I’ll let the process play out and trust that a plan is in place, but even if a plan isn’t in place, a solution will present itself in the months ahead as well, it just has to because they numbers are what they are.

We know which teams are playing the Boilermakers at which frequencies and where the teams will square off. We have the who, the where, but not the when. The last aspect is still to be determined.

 206.
Today the Big Ten provided the season’s series of home games, away games, and split series. Each team will play seven teams once at home, seven teams once on the road, and three teams home and away.

 213.

 214.
With the ongoing realignment of conferences, the shuffle becomes a bit more confusing this year following the additions of former PAC-12 powerhouses Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington.

 215.
Before we get into the single-game matchups, the Boilers will have a home-and-home series with each of the following teams:

 216.

 217.
Indiana

 218.
Michigan

 221.
Purdue will host the following teams at Mackey Arena:

 222.

 223.
Maryland

 224.
Nebraska

 228.
USC

 229.
Wisconsin

 230.

 231.
The following teams will host the Boilers once conference play begins:

 232.

 233.
Illinois

 234.
Iowa

 235.
Michigan State

 236.
Minnesota

 237.
Oregon

 238.
Penn State

 239.
Washington

 240.

 241.
You have to wonder how these travel schedules between schools on opposite sides of a very large country are going to impact when these dates will be scheduled. Typically, students would have to board an airplane the day before a game, get some rest in the team hotel, then be ready for the next day.

 242.
In my mind, I imagine most of those coast-to-coast (and I’m not talking about a player getting a rebound and driving up the court for a layup) games will be reserved for weekends, but that part is yet to be determined.

 243.
The Boilermakers open the season on December 14th in a non-conference contest with Texas A&M. That time is also to be determined, but it’s essentially a home game held at the Indy Classic at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

 295.
It probably helps that Daniel Johnson is from Canada. From the Purdue release on his drafting:

 296.

Johnson, a native of London, Ontario, could become the 51st player in Purdue Football history to play in the CFL. The last Boilermaker to appear in a CFL game was Frankie Williams (2019), while six Boilermakers have played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders all-time: Tom Barnett (1962), Neil Habig (1958-64), Chuck Kyle (1969-70), Rick Moss (1979), Kory Sheets (2013) and Len Wilson (1960).

 297.
Obviously the most famous name there to most Boilermakers is probably Kory Sheets who went up there, set the record for rushing yards in a Grey Cup game, won game MVP, and became a champion. That’s a high bar for Jonson to live up to, but returning to your home country with a chance to play the sport you love has to be incredibly gratifying. Congratulations to Daniel Johnson and good luck!

 317.
Now the hard work begins.

After going undrafted in this year’s NFL Draft, former Purdue Safety Cam Allen has inked a free agent deal to begin his NFL dreams.

 323.
 324.

 325.
The Virginia native will be heading out west to suit up for the Denver Broncos. The newest Bronco finished his Purdue career with 13 career interceptions and grabbed three in his final season. He leaves Purdue with 157 tackles. Plus, let’s not forget he did score one touchdown during his career which I know always means a lot to the fellas on the defensive side of the ball.

 326.
We also received more news about the deal with the Broncos from Broncos reported Mike Klis.

 327.

 328.

 329.
Broncos gave Purdue undrafted safety Cam Allen a $5k signing bonus. #9sports
— MikeKlis9NEWS (@mikeklis9news) April 29, 2024

 332.
 333.

 334.
Always nice to have a signing bonus. Teams are given a pool of $183,103 for undrafted free agents. Coming in as an undrafted free agent is always a tough spot for NFL guys as there are only so many roster spots available and you’re competing not just against the established locker room but with those guys who the team you’re signing with deemed to be worth a precious draft pick. It’s certainly not unheard of for undrafted guys to make an impact but it is a tough road.

 335.
However, Cam Allen was very successful in his time at Purdue showing dedication and hard work throughout his five seasons. This is just the latest hurdle for him to overcome. Now, the hard work can truly began. Good luck Mr. Allen, we are all rooting for you.
