21. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">I had a good feeling about Minnesota after playing a game where everything clicked.  Good defensive coverage (at least better than what we've been seeing), excellent breakouts from their own zone, some grit when needed, precision scoring, and improved goaltending.  It was a game where a lot of things that were going wrong for Montreal suddenly went right.  I assumed that with the confidence they showed in the game against Ottawa that something would carry over into Minnesota.  I wasn't expecting another blow out, but I was expecting a win.</span></span><br />

42. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">It was easy to quit after Carey let in those two softies within the first five minutes and most of the Canadiens did.  Brendan didn't.  He plugged away and with effort and talent he managed to get Montreal close enough to nearly make a game of it.  If you could only bottle the essence of Gallagher and feed it to the rest of his teammates this season might be very different.</span></span><br />

46. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">Yet again Thomas Plekanec quietly went out and did his job.  He's such a good skater with a high hockey IQ.  He gets the puck into dangerous spots, he is very rarely caught out of position defensively, and he is by far and away the best Canadien at winning faceoffs.  He doesn't get nearly enough credit for what he does on the ice, but I like to have someone so consistent in the dome.  I like knowing what to expect from players so you can work around them accordingly.</span></span><br />

77. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">At 4:46 of the first period, Matt Cullen was in the right place at the right time when a rebound came right to him.  He then proceeded to fan on a wrist shot and banked it in off the inside of Carey's left skate for the opening goal of the game.  Las year you could have said that it was very uncharacteristic of Carey to slide over so awkwardly but this year it's the norm.  It's a goal Carey should have had. </span></span><br />
78. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">Not 10 seconds later Carey was picking the puck out of his net again.  After corralling the puck behind his net (it was dumped in off the faceoff from the previous goal) he wristed the puck over Pacioretty's stick and right to Dumba on the point.  I don't know why Carey thought he had to slide over to cover the far post but he was cleanly beat (I think the tip only knuckled the puck, not changed its direction) by a wrist shot from the point.  Neither one of these goals should ever have been scored on an NHL goaltender, forget about both of them occurring 10 seconds apart.  It killed the Canadiens and any chance they had of actually winning this game.</span></span><br />
79. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">I've gone with the game defining play.  This series of plays occurring within 10 seconds of one another ended the game, whether I wanted to believe it or not.  Sure, we got to within two goals and the Habs' second goal was a very well executed play by Pacioretty, Danault, and Shaw but it was never consequential.  No matter how much we wanted to believe the Canadiens were one good surge away from being back in this one, the reality is that the Canadiens checked out at 4:56 of the first period and never really checked back in.</span></span><br />

84. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">These games are so hard to watch and so disheartening to die hard Habs fans.  To see Carey struggle the way he is, is painful.  I don't know if he needs to play through this or have some games off.  I don't know if he needs to sit down with a sports psychologist.  I guess if I knew the fix I'd be getting a call from Canadiens management for the answer.  I do know this, playing Carey Price is not providing this team with their best opportunity to win hockey games.  The Canadiens need to string together a bunch of wins together in the near future and Carey can't even string together a bunch of saves.<br /><br />They played good hockey with Montoya in.  There's no reason to believe they can't repeat that performance with a goaltender who will make stops when he's expected to.  They don't need a game stealer, they just need a puck stopper, someone to give them a fighting chance.  Right now, Carey can't even do that.<br /><br />As much trouble as Carey is having right now their defence is still not doing him many favours.  I wonder what Bergevin saw in Karl Alzner to sign him for five years at $4.6 million per.  Is he really an upgrade from Alexei Emelin, Nathan Beaulieu, or Andrei Markov?  Karl Alzner has 4 assists but is a -6 and has caused everyone of those 6 goals and then some.  He's a defensive nightmare for coughing up pucks at inopportune times and as he's a defenseman this poses a problem.  He's seemingly had some good years with Washington but this year he's a giveaway machine.  At what point do you drop him to the third paring or even the press box?</span><br />

86. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">In case you're wondering how Alzner stacks up against the men he's replacing; Markov has 4 goals and 11 assists in 27 games for Kazan Ak-Bars, neither Emelin or Beaulieu have giveaway differentials in double digits yet (-8 and -7 respectively vs. -12).  Alzner has lower Corsi and Fenwick (50.0, 48.4) percentages than Beaulieu (51.8, 53.8) as well.<br /><br />What about his teammates?  We'll leave Weber and Mete out of this.  I think the talent possessed by these two skaters puts them both in a league ahead of Alzner.  Petry has a lower giveaway differential and higher Fenwick and Corsi (-5, 54.2, 55.4) Brandon Davidson is the same (-8, 59.1, 60.8), and Jordie Benn is better than Alzner (-2, 56.9, 55.4).  With better defensemen all around him internally in the organisation why then continue to utilise Alzner so heavily?  Is it worth throwing away games for Bergevin to justify this signing?  Terrible disrespect to the fans and city of Montreal if this is the case.  I certainly hope management's patience with Alzner runs out before this season does.</span><br />
87. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Winnipeg is next and I'm not optimistic.  Our starting goaltender has lost his way, the Montreal management seemingly has a love affair with Alzner who hasn't been much better than a traffic cone, and I don't know how much more this team can take and still keep their spirits up.  At least the media is ignoring the fact that Sidney Crosby is 44th in league scoring now.  Lucky him.<br /><br />Ole.</span></div>

129. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">He was dynamite to watch tonight.  Great move on Karlsson and a snipe as he's falling down for his first, and deft hands to quickly put the puck on his backhand and then top corner for his second.  Both goals, very meaningful as they were scored before Montreal started running away with it (I know, they're all meaningful).  With play like this from the "third line" the Canadiens might have the balanced scoring to turn this season around.  When you score your first and second goals in the NHL in the same game, you get the game puck.</span></span><br />

165. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">With 2:27 left in the second period and the score 4-3 it's looking like Montreal is going to hang on to a 1 goal lead heading into the third and I'm just praying they don't blow it.  Jordie Benn picked up the puck harmlessly in the corner, then launched a saucer pass as good as any I've ever seen from a Canadiens defencemen to a speeding Galchenyuk.  The instant I heard it was Galchenyuk on the end of that pass I knew it was a goal.  I just had that feeling that Alex isn't going to miss and with the confidence of a 30 goal scorer it was potted for a 2 goal lead.</span></span><br />
166. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">Feeling pretty good going into the third period with a two goal lead we called on Montoya to keep it that way when Zack Smith was sent in on a break.  Petry managed to get a stick in and Montoya shut the door to keep the 2 goal lead.  Another big sigh of relief as an Ottawa goal so quickly after Montreal's and so close to the end of the period would surly swing the momentum in the wrong direction.</span></span><br />

168. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">There's less than a minute left when Brendan Gallagher stripped Karlsson of the puck, muscles his way down the ice, fends off another Ottawa defender, undresses Anderson, then pots a true highlight reel goal to give Montreal a commanding 3 goal lead.  That was it.  The wind was out of Ottawa's sails.  There were no more dreams of making a comeback in the third.  The proverbial nail was hammered in the coffin.   </span></span><br />

173. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">What a treat to watch that game from start to finish (well, from 0:21 in to finish).  The Canadiens played pretty good defence, were excellent on the break outs and were an offensive machine.  Any game where I get to watch the Canadiens score 8 goals is a good day.  The fact that it was over the Ottawa Senators makes it all the sweeter (I still remember the Gryba hit on Ellar).<br /><br />The Good News is we can score!  That makes 18 goals in the last 4 games.  Who needs Price if you're going to score 4 goals a game?  I kid of course but I'm cautiously optimistic that Julien has found the winning combination with the lines and defence pairing.  Of course we don't suspect this trend will continue season long (would we be so lucky) but it looks like the forwards have found a way to score.  Even Galchenyuk on the fourth line is beginning to score regularly.<br /><br />The Bad News is that our backup goaltender is better than our starter.  Montoya wasn't great but he was solid, made big saves when needed, and gave the Canadiens a chance to win.  Price simply isn't doing that this year.  Without Price playing like Price, Al simply doesn't have the talent to be as good as Price could be.  There'll be no Stanley Cup unless Mr. Price finds his way.<br /><br />This was a treat to watch.  Obviously scary after letting one in 21 seconds after the puck dropped, but when you bounce back like the Canadiens did you can forgive that.  This was a game that everything went right.  All the "puck luck" that saw bad bounces cost the Canadiens games up to this point was repayed in full, the one shot.  Despite a lot of things going right for the Canadiens after a lot (understatement) of things going wrong, this was a decent hockey club that the Canadiens just beat.  The Sens are a middle of the pack team with a good, well rounded offence and a very good penalty kill.  Beating them was certainly a step in the right direction.</span><br />

Here's something to think about.  The Canadiens are first in the league in shots on goal for and seventh in the league for fewest shots against.  All they need to do is get their shooting percentage and save percentage up to league average and they'll win more games than not.  As it stands right now, we need average shooters and average goaltending to turn this season around and make the playoffs.  That's doable right?<br />

247. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">You can't fault Carey Price with the fourth goal but how did the Canadiens get from being up 3-0 to a flook goal tying the game up?  Poor goaltending.  I think Carey could see the first goal.  He looked to have an angel around Nash with a sight line to the shooter.  I think it was poor positioning and slow reaction time.  For argument's sake we'll give him that one too.  He slide over too far and was too slow getting back in the net on Nash's goal and was needlessly over to far on the third goal when it should have been recognised that a pass was a better and more likely option.  He had no chance on recovering to even attempt to save Zibanejad.  Poor positioning.  Due to errors unbecoming of a starting goaltender with Price's experience, Carey Price was key in the New York Rangers creeping their way back even.  We're all very luck Danault decided to play hero tonight.  All I ask for goaltenders to be in the dome is that they find a way to win.  Price very nearly didn't tonight, but he did so we'll keep him. </span></div>

252. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">It's 4-4 and we're all thinking, "not this again".  The Canadiens came out flying but shoddy goaltending and some bad luck has things even.  It's been a short season filled with short comings but Mr. Danault came to play with a strong back.</span></span><br />
253. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;"><br /></span></span><span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif;"><span style="font-size: 15.3333px;">Pacioretty, Shaw, and Danault did a good job getting the puck over the blue line, under control, then got the puck deep.  After winning their respective battles along the boards Shaw found Davidson creeping in from the point.  It was a hard shot from Davidson that could have been handled better by Pavelec but with the goaltending error on the other foot for a change tonight, Danault was lurking in front of the net and quickly swatted home his second of the night.  Not just a game winner but a confidence booster for everyone.  It rewarded the tremendous effort from the entire team and afforded Carey another game to find his.</span></span><br />

258. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">Fantastic start and the Canadiens did well to answer goals from the Rangers on two occasions.  You have to be impressed with Danault.  Obviously 4 point nights are going to be few and far between but if he can play like that more nights than not that second line will be more like line 1B.  That's the second win in three nights and, more importantly, it's hockey worth watching.<br /><br />The Good News is that it's yet another win where our offensive looked like a juggernaut.  How this team can be so offensively gifted after looking so anaemic is curious.  Good on Julien, too for coming up with the Pacioretty/Danault/Shaw line.  It looked very, very good tonight.  That's too positives.  Something we can take and build on in the coming games.<br /><br />The Bad News is that they just weren't tight enough with the lead.  Sure, you can blame bad goaltending, I did, but there's 5 more players out there on the ice.  I don't like teams sitting back on a lead for two periods but you have to tighten up a bit.  The Habs didn't and that needs work.  The Rangers aren't a good team right now and playing that loose won't result in points against anyone better.<br /><br />Carey Price's play right now is just plain ugly.  No sugar coating it.  This is not a defensive problem, it might have originated from the abysmal defence we were treated too earlier on, but this, right now, is a Carey problem.  If the offence kicks in like this every night and the defence tightens things up a bit more, this team is still no where near a Stanley Cup contender without Price playing like Price. If I'm right about that, and Price doesn't improve, this will be a wasted year.</span><br />
259. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">I saw this happen once before.  Jose Theodore had a season like Price did, Hart and Vezina Trophies.  Then something happened.  It wasn't a physical thing, I doubt hair loss can be directly attributed to plummeting goals against or save percentage.  It, coincidentally, was the year after Theodore signed the biggest contract (up to that point) in Montreal Canadiens history.  Theodore was abysmal and eventually lost his starting job to Cristobal Huet.  His story with the Canadiens, that started out like a fairytale, ended badly, traded to the Avalanche for David Aebischer.  With all the trade talk going on and a historical precedent already there, can we expect to see Price in a trade if things don't improve?  It's a sure way to get Matt Duchesne in a Habs uniform and probably Nat MacKinnon as well.</span><br />
260. <span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "hanuman" , serif; font-size: 11.5pt;">The Senators are up next.  They are well coached if nothing else with a bonafide superstart on the blueline.  It was good to get the win against the Rangers, at this point I'll take what I can get, but we need better goaltending, we need sharper play in our own zone, and we need to string together a winning streak to get back on track.  What better way than to beat the Senators in Ottawa, our home away from home.<br /><br />Ole.</span></div>
