More than that, the great coffee shops and roasters can be found in the most unexpected of places, all over the state.

 39.
So, before a full day of exploring Pure Michigan, we suggest starting your day easy. Below we list five of the state’s coolest craft coffee shops where you can relax, sip and caffeinate.

 40.
1. Great Lakes Coffee, Detroit

 41.
Located in a 130-year-old building in the heart of bustling Midtown right on Woodward Avenue is Great Lakes Coffee. There’s reclaimed wood from old houses in Hamtramck, metal work from a local artist, exposed brick galore and an outdoor patio with string lights. It’s open late, and serves beer and wine and spirits as well as their own coffee blends. Even more, there’s trivia night on Wednesdays!

 42.

Photo Courtesy of Jesse David Green Photography

 43.
2. Falling Rock Cafe & Bookstore, Munising

 44.
Just south of the famous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is Falling Rock Cafe & Bookstore, a downtown Munising gem favorited by locals and visitors. This cafe’s small batches of coffee beans are roasted by hand nearby. If you’re hungry, a local favorite is the smoked whitefish on a bagel or in a salad. And for hot summer days, they have a wide selection of ice cream. Relax and enjoy thousands of books – or stop in for live music night.

 45.
3. Raven Café, Port Huron

 46.
Self-described as “part Hogwarts and part Cheers,” the Raven Café is arguably one of Michigan’s most unique coffee spots. Make sure to venture up to the second floor for couch seating, where books line every wall except one, because of a window that overlooks the river. There is an array of espresso drinks, but with flavors like coconut mocha and gingerbread, we suggest not passing up the coffee shakes. If you’re hungry, the menu expands beyond coffee to include soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts (including fresh donuts brought in daily). There is also a full bar serving cocktails and craft beers on tap, which goes perfectly with the live music in the evenings.

 47.

 48.
4. Cabin Creek Coffee, Alpena

 49.
You can’t go wrong with a coffee shop whose anniversary is on Valentine’s Day. Family owned and operated for almost a decade, Cabin Creek is a must-visit in Alpena. Although located downtown, the decor is true to its cabin name, making it perfect for reading a book or kicking back with friends. The menu is anything but basic, with sandwiches like the Monte Cristo accompanied by gouda cheese on toasted cinnamon bread. For all the sweet tooth cravings out there, try the Big Moose Mocha or the Lodge Latte.

 50.
5. Madcap, Grand Rapids

 51.
Step into this ultra-modern café in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids and enjoy service by award-winning baristas. This corner shop has a sleek interior with plenty of natural light. Despite the soothing ambience, the quality of the coffee is still the highlight, as members of the staff dedicate months to traveling the world in search of the best beans. Third Coast is the house espresso, but with top-notch knowledgeable baristas, we’ll leave it to them to provide a recommendation. A guaranteed favorite for serious coffee lovers.

 52.

 94.

We’ve teamed up with Expedia Viewfinder to spotlight some of the most adventurous winter sports to try in the Great Lake State this season.

 95.

 96.
Cold weather doesn’t bring life in Michigan to a halt. In fact, a whole new array of activities open up during the winter months. Strolling along the chilly beaches of Grand Haven or attending the Motown Winter Blast festival in Detroit can certainly be fun for visitors and locals alike. But those looking for something more rugged, more exhilarating, can push the envelope on adventure.

 97.
At Expedia Viewfinder, we love discovering adrenaline-pumping, thrill-inducing activities during our travels, so we joined forces with Pure Michigan to reveal some of the most extreme sports to try in Michigan this winter:

 98.
Ice Climbing

 99.

 100.
When it’s too cold to scale a mountain, try a frozen waterfall instead. Ice climbing is one of Michigan’s more extreme winter activities, and it’s not for the faint of heart. With ice axes, a belay system, and pure grit, climbers methodically ascend these arctic pillars to reach spectacular snowy summits. Over the past few years, the sport has increased in popularity and Michigan is arguably the best location to ice climb in the U.S. In particular, Lake Superior in Munising is a climber’s utopia, with hundreds of frozen waterfalls ranging from 20 to 200+ feet in height.

 101.
Ice Luge

 102.

 103.
On the shores of Lake Michigan, the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex offers ice luge for mere mortals who’d like to pretend to be Olympians. Not to be confused with the bobsled, the ice luge is flat with two steel runners; it’s built for riders to recline on their backs and steer with their legs and shoulders. One of only four luge tracks in the U.S., the Sport Complex’s track welcomes the general public and provides a rare opportunity to try this velocious sport. The experience is exhilarating as riders hurtle feet-first down the 850-foot track, reaching speeds up to 30 mph (Olympic athletes reach speeds of 80 to 90 mph).

 104.
Ice Diving

 105.

 106.
One little-known fact about Michigan is that it offers some of the best shipwreck diving in the world. Thousands of sunken ships rest quietly at the bottom of the Great Lakes, some dating back to the 1600s. And it just so happens that the best time of year to view these wrecks is in winter, when the ice coating Lake Michigan acts a sealant against wind, boats, and people who stir up the lakebed. In other words, visibility is best in winter and that’s when you’ll see formidable ice divers chainsaw their way through the surface to sink into the watery world below. An advanced form of scuba diving, ice diving requires a special suit and equipment (and yes, a dive certification is mandatory). But the gear is well worth the experience of drifting through the water to view an elegant schooner or hulking freighter, eerily peaceful and frozen in time.

 107.
Ice Sailing

 108.

 109.
Called “wind dancing” by some, ice sailing pairs a wing, kite, or sled with a snowboard, skis, or skates. This adds complexity and speed to some favorite winter sports and makes for an addicting challenge. Ice sailing can be done anywhere there is wind and snow or ice, but Michigan is a paradise due to its many frozen lakes—there’s lots of space to play. Ice sailors describe the feeling as energizing and sublime as they harness the wind’s power to glide across the ice.

 110.
Snowmobiling

 111.

 112.
In the Great Lakes State, hiking boots are swapped out for snowmobiles during the winter. With over 6,500 groomed, interconnected trails, Michigan takes its motor-powered adventures seriously. One of only three states that offers such an extensive system of trails, snowmobilers can explore miles and miles of picturesque, exciting terrain. Ideal for an extreme winter group activity, visitors can speed over frozen lakes and through national forests to see sights that are often hidden in warmer months.

 113.
As the weather cools and the snow falls, Michigan turns into a magnificent playground for the outdoor adventurer. Plan a visit this season to try out (or watch) these extreme winter sports in beautiful Michigan.

 158.
The star of the show is the Pere Marquette 1225, a steam locomotive which was recently restored and put back in operation in 2013 at the Steam Railroad Institute in Owosso. Seasonal excursions aboard the “North Pole Express” are extremely popular with families, selling out in advance of the holiday season.

 159.
One of the animated elves was played by actor Ed Gale, who graduated from Plainwell High School in the 1980s. (Ed also appeared in “Call Me Claus” and “Santa, Jr.”).

 160.
The world premiere of The Polar Express was held in 2004 at Celebration Cinema IMAX in Grand Rapids, with an elaborate post viewing party at DeVos Place downtown. Actor Peter Scolari (who played the “lonely boy” Billy) and Van Allsburg were both in attendance for the festivities, along with Santa Claus (of course).

 161.
Prancer
162. Filmed in the Berrien County town of Three Oaks, this 1989 film starred Sam Elliott, Cloris Leachman and young Rebecca Harrell—an eight year old farm girl who discovers one of Santa’s reindeer has fallen from a downtown decoration and come to life. She later nurses the wounded reindeer, hoping to bring it back to health in time for Christmas, while inspiring the community with her spirit. Prancer celebrates its 25th anniversary this year!

 163.
The Santa Clause (I, II and III)
164. All starring Tim Allen, who was raised in southeast Michigan, attended Western Michigan University, has owned several homes around the state and is the voice of the Pure Michigan TV and radio ads. The movie itself is actually set in Chicago.

 165.
The trilogy was first introduced 20 years ago in 1994 (followed by sequels in 2004 and 2006), the story follows the life of Scott Calvin—who inadvertently kills Santa on Christmas eve and magically finds himself taking over the role of the big guy himself.

 166.
Sequel #1 shows Scott Calvin settling well into his role as Santa, but a new twist may bring his reign to an end if he doesn’t find a Mrs. Claus before Christmas Eve. Sequel #2—The Escape Claus follows Santa and Mrs. (Carol) Claus and the pending arrival of their first child together, as well as a plot by Jack Frost to take over the helm at the North Pole.

 167.
The Christmas Bunny
168. Filmed entirely in Michigan, this is the story of a lonely foster child who finds a lost, injured rabbit in the woods on Christmas Eve. The animal is nursed back to health by the eccentric “Bunny Lady” (played by Florence Henderson), who runs a rabbit rescue in an old barn behind her Michigan farmhouse.

 169.
The movie was filmed during a snowy February and March, 2010 in several West Michigan rural towns—including Lowell, Alto, Wyoming and Zeeland. It was directed by Grand Rapids native Tom Seidman (Ordinary People, Dead Poets Society), and was his first movie filmed in West Michigan.

 170.
Silver Bells
171. Produced in association with the Salvation Army and filmed in Manistee, Grand Rapids and Ludington, this 2013 film stars Bruce Boxleitner (Scarecrow & Mrs. King, Babylon 5).

 172.
According to a production release, the holiday story revolves around a hyper-competitive feather and overly win-driven sportscaster who goes too far and must perform community service as a bell ringer. Through his work with the Salvation Army, he discovers the true meaning of Christmas. The charity played a pivotal role throughout the film as the family volunteers with the organization in various ways.

 173.
Michigan filmmaker Harold Cronk directed the project and 10 West Studios lead the prost production efforts to keep the entire project in Michigan, qualifying it for state film incentives.

However, there are plenty of sledding hills in the area, and two are at Stony Creek! You can find them near the Gladeview and West Branch picnic areas. Stony Creek even features a dedicated toboggan hill! With the only return lift in the UP, it’s a must-visit for those who aren’t keen on the hike back up the hill. Plus, you can also go downhill skiing, ice skating, or take lessons through the lodge.

 283.
Snow Snake – Harrison, MI

 284.
Snow Snake is a hidden gem in mid-Michigan. 328.

To love Michigan is to love living in a four-season state.Whether you’re a full-time resident or just visiting the Great Lakes state, coming to Michigan means that for a few months out of the year, you’ll experience the beauty of winter and all of the activities and events that come along with it.

 329.
When temperatures falls, so does the snow, giving all a chance to participate in some of their favorite winter activities. From a friendly snowball fight in your backyard to cross-country skiing adventure in the back woods, Michigan offers some great ways to make memories during the winter season.

 330.
So, grab your favorite hot drink and take a look at five ways to celebrate the winter season in Michigan:

 331.
1. Skiing

 332.
Michigan offers many ways for people to enjoy skiing, from the rush of going downhill to witnessing the beauty around them by leisurely traversing a wooded trail.

 333.
With some of the best downhill skiing in the Midwest, Michigan’s pitch and vertical drops are are some of the most thrilling in the nation. The state is home to 51 ski destinations, ranking it second in the country in number of ski areas. For a slightly slower, but no less of a fun time, consider cross country skiing. Enthusiasts and newcomers to the sport can enjoy the tranquility of more than 3,000 miles of snow-covered trails with beautiful winter landscapes serving as the backdrop. And don’t forget the snowboarding!

 334.

 335.
2. Sledding

 336.
Probably one of the easiest and the most fun you can have on a Michigan winter day is spending time just being a kid. Want some thrills and know of a big hill in the area? Grab your sled and go have some fun. Another great way to have fun that is also growing in popularity is snow tubing. Check out one of Michigan’s state or your local county parks for facilities set up especially for sledding and snow tubing, where you can feel the sting of the cold air on your face as your sled careens down a hill.

 337.
3. Snowmobiling

 338.
Feel the rev of an engine as you race through snow-covered trails and frozen lakes on a snowmobile during a Michigan winter. With more than 6,500 groomed snowmobiling trails, Michigan has one of the most extensive systems of interconnected trails in the nation. From state and national forests, to 11,000 frozen lakes, snowmobilers can experience a great adventure each time they head out for a ride.

 339.

 340.
4. Snowshoeing

 341.
Snowshoeing in Michigan is a great way to see the tranquil beauty of the winter season. Not all of Michigan’s wildlife scurries off for warmer climates or hibernation as you might get a chance to see rabbits, deer and fox as you trek along the state’s thousands of miles of trails. Snowshoe through the woods, breathing air filled with smells of the forest, hearing nothing but the sound of your own footsteps. Snowshoeing in Michigan offers outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers a respite among picturesque trails and terrains.

 342.
5. Pond Hockey

 343.
Michigan has a strong tradition when it comes to hockey, and winter weather provides the perfect chance to lace up your skates and have a blast. With more than 11,000 frozen inland lakes, there’s an opportunity to drop the puck anywhere you turn. Whether you’re just learning how to skate or are dreaming of one day playing at Joe Louis Area, all you need is some thick ice, skates, a hockey stick and some friends, and you’re ready to spend an afternoon enjoying the outdoors.

 344.
