We all know the stat. Notre Dame has lost 6 straight against the Spartans of Michigan State in South Bend. Usually, Michigan State is on fucking fire , or close enough, in the first 4-5 games of the season- before they fade out into irrelevancy. This years version of the Spartans, is on a different track. they are averaging around 3.8 yards per carry, and they lost to Central Michigan last week. Whoa to us Irish fans. I could compare him to every other WR in the country right now- but it's more fun to compare him against AJ Green and Julio Jones ( you all know why). Here are the stats:<ul><li>Julio Jones: 5 Rec. 55 Yds. 0 TD's</li><li>AJ Green: 10 Rec. 138 Yds. 1 TD</li><li>Mike Floyd: 11 Rec. 320 Yds. 4 TD's</li></ul>Hmmm.... Mike Floyd is real, real good. So good in fact, that his injuries can break this team. Last year he was more than sorely missed against Syracuse and U$C. I'm pretty sure if he plays in the final minutes against Michigan- we may have had a different outcome. Come Saturday against the Spartans, I expect Floyd to make a huge impact. Word has it, that he is moving around really well and should be close to 100% for the game. I'm don't think MSU has anyone that can cover him- I don't think there is a corner in the country that can keep up with him for an entire game. I'm talking like, 6 receptions for 127 yards and 2 TD's- and that may be with his knee cap sticking out of his skin. Defensive MVP: Robert Blanton. The Fighting Irish had a perceived strength this year in their secondary. With the return of Darrin Walls, and both starters from 2008 back in Raeshon McNeil and Robert Blanton- these corners were supposed to shutdown all-comers. With only two games into the year, I 'm not even close to writing off this unit, but after rewatching both the Nevada game and the Michigan game... I'm not sure these guys are playing up to their potential. I think Blanton has become our best overall cornerback. Why he is getting rotated in like he is, is a bit confusing to me. Maybe the coaches want fresh legs, maybe they are situational rotating the corners. Whatever. Blanton should be in the game as long as possible, in my opinion. I think that RJ will end up having one of those games against MSU that will have the rest of the fans taking notice, as I have. Look for an early INT to help set the tone of the defense and the game. The Sleeper: Toryan Smith. Everyone is expecting them to play the power game. I wonder if that is really going to be the case. If it is, Toryan Smith could play a very key role in stopping the inside run. Smith is a physical hitter, and he would relish the chance for a pound 'em type game. I have a feeling MSU will try to spread it out a bit more- but we will just have to wait.Something else to watch: How will Notre Dame's defensive line react? I want to see what kind of changes are made before and during the game to help this unit play better. By play better, I mean; keeping the offensive lineman off of our linebackers, making holes for our blitzers, and making some god damn plays themselves. This unit has the talent- I have no doubt. But, are they game-ready and battle-tested yet?Is there a rivalry trophy on the line? Duh. I wouldn't of asked if there wasn't. So who's gonna win? IRISH 38-16. I firmly believe that Notre Dame's offense is one of the best in the country. The passing game is second to none and the running game showed big signs of life last week. She promised popcorn: 1. Still trying to get the taste of last weekend's game out of my mouth, so let's start with something fun. With Sparty on its way into South Bend, give me your favorite memory of the ND-MSU series. I don't care what it is: John L. Smith losing it, the image of MSU guarding against nothing, an actual game memory, whatever. Tommy Zbikowski, 2004. Notre Dame lost its season opener in Provo Utah against BYU. They pull their shit together and beat Michigan in South Bend, and then they travel to East Lansing. Tommy Zbikowski flat out took the ball out of the QB's hands and streaked down the sidelines for a TD. Sure, ND has had bigger moments against Sparty- but I always have that image in my mind. <img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 267px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382127082053405986" border="0" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4oai2QUlbUE/SrEoEL3NjSI/AAAAAAAAD0g/OePJTv_7-wo/s400/zbikowski_8_cashore.jpg" /> 2. Since 1997, Michigan State has won 9 of 12 games against the Irish. I view this as a classic case of Sparty having ND's number. What worries you most about Michigan State this weekend? What worries me most is the fact that we lost last week. This game was pressure-packed enough with all of the expectations that came with the 2009 season- not to mention the fact that ND last beat Sparty in South Bend in 1993. 1993. Can this team be game ready- body and mind for what is historically a very physical matchup? 3. Between my lingering bad feelings from last weekend and the history of this series in the last decade plus, give me a good reason or two or three to feel optimistic about a change in fortune for the Irish, because right now, I could use some optimism. Here are a few: <ol><li>Jimmy Clausen is playing his best football. Look at what he has down in his last 3 games- it has been remarkable. </li><li>Michel Floyd will be playing. Remember how bad the offense looked in the final games last season? No Floyd. </li><li>The Fighting Irish are due. It's been too long, and the bowl streak is over, so they might as well snuff this bullshit.</li></ol>I know those weren't the greatest answers, but it's what I have confidence in right now. 4. As it is my week, I get to address my current ND obsession. Have the last two games changed your opinion/reinforced your opinion re: Charlie in the box versus Charlie on the field? I will continue to support Weis on the field. Head Coaches belong on the sideline- not the booth. I don't care if he's shitting his pants or in a wheelchair- Weis belongs on the sideline. Like I said earlier this week- when was the last time ND scored 34 points in Ann Arbor?... Never. Weis is doing a fine job with the offense. If nothing else, I can count on one thing to look forward to on Saturday - tailgating. Anyone have a good recipe for me to try? I make no limitations on what it can be - a drink recipe, dessert, appetizer. So long as it can be made on a grill, camp stove, or ahead of time, I am happy to listen. The better the suggestion, the more likely you are to get invited to my own tailgate. Ahh... drinking. One of the better drinks that I was "smashing" this summer was the Goombay Smash. You can find that recipe- along with a creepy "How to" video by some weirdo in a <a href="http://subwaydomer.blogspot.com/2009/09/nevada-september-5-2009.html">previous Subway Domer post, like HERE</a>. However, with it becoming more and more "fallish" I will start to fall back on an old reliable freind... Subway Domer Crack. It's simple to make, delicious, can be served hot or cold, and puts me on my ass like a pirate hooker. Enjoy: Subway Domer Crack <ul><li>Take one bottle of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum</li><li>Take one gallon of apple cider</li><li>Pour into something</li><li>Shake that something</li><li>Pour into a glass, water bottle, flask, goatskin bag- whatever</li><li>Consume</li></ul>Just keep the proportions about half or so. You can heat it up in a kettle over a fire, put some gay cinnamon sticks in it (not that there is anything wrong with that)... whatever. The point is that this shit is addictive and does the trick on a fall Saturday. Do I get the invite? 6. Finally, any predictions for the game? I encourage your predictions to involve something other than a final score, but otherwise, I make no suggestions. After The Fighting Irish set the Spartans asses on fire with an offensive showcase (IRISH 45-16), Dantonio and his band of flamers return to East Lansing with said fires on their asses and burn it to the ground. So I got a little busy when the first Blogpoll Roundtable was published. That's why I woke up a few hours before the rest of Subway Station. Which freshman impressed you more last weekend: the California dream Matt Barkley who quarterbacked USC over tOSU or white lightening Tate Forcier who slashed through Notre Dame? Am I to sit here and say that I want the starting quarterback of one of the two biggest rivals on my team? Did I not suffer enough Saturday? Let’s play a game of pretend the unthinkable happened. Commissioner __________ of your conference has been forced to resign after he was caught canoodling with some harlots. Great news, you’ve been chosen to succeed him. To make your mark you decide to make a big change. What is it going to be? The commissioner of my conference? I picked a good week to answer the Blogpoll, huh? Well, for the sake of this post, I will call Notre Dame A.D. Jack Swarbrick the commissioner of The Conference of One. A big change? You're talking about a school that makes less changes in Tradition and thinking than the Vatican. Here's a smaller one that may go unnoticed- which is a good thing when dealing with the old alumni: Put those trophies front and center. No, I'm not talking about the 7 Heisman's, or the 12 National titles... <a href="http://subwaydomer.blogspot.com/2007/03/shillelaghs-megaphones-and-bragging.html">I'm talking about the trophy games against rivals- all 5 games, including the one game with 2 trophies.</a> Quit hiding these things and make a spectacle of ourselves. C'mon... it'll be fun. 3. This week the quality of games is kicked up a gear. Other than your own, which game are you most looking forward to? Florida State @ BYU. I'm as curious as a cat in heat about BYU and the possible future of the Stormin' Mormons. Even though Florida State is unranked- this is still a big game for BYU as they continue to try and climb the polls and make a run at the BCS and even- the National title game. This game has intrigue, and contradiction- two of my favorite things. 4. What mascot and/or tradition would you thieve from another school if it was socially acceptable. This one will put Notre Dame in the forefront and help battle our most hated rival, U$C. I held a "Tailgate" party for the game for some friends and family out by my pole barn. Sometime in the 4th quarter, I grabbed an axe and bashed my foundation a few times. Childish? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely. My frustration meter was hitting peak levels. I've had time to simmer down a bit, and even though I couldn't talk myself into watching the game again- I will try to give you a hangover post. I realize that for many fans, this game was the "end all" for the 2009 season. If you are one of those fans, I really hope you read this post with an open mind. Put down the axe. Not all was lost. Fighting Irish fans have a tendency to overreact after both, wins and losses. This is no different. I went and looked at a few message boards and saw post after post condemning Weis. I realize there are a lot of nutty nutbags out on the web- but seriously. get over it. This loss was not Charlie's fault. This loss does not seal the deal on a mediocre season. We have 10 games left and most assuredly a bowl game, with 3 of those 10 regular season games <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4oai2QUlbUE/Sq2gl7-4i8I/AAAAAAAADz4/vdTFf5eooew/s1600-h/F587669.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 249px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5381133703394659266" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_4oai2QUlbUE/Sq2gl7-4i8I/AAAAAAAADz4/vdTFf5eooew/s320/F587669.jpg" /></a>being against teams that I would trade this game for a win in all 3. U$C, Michigan state, and Boston College. So just think about it for a minute, and put down the axe. Jimmy Clausen can sling the motherfucking rock. Even with the loss to Michigan sitting there like a festering wound on our ass cheeks, we can look at Jimmy and be a lot more confident in him on the road. The offensive line protected Jimmy, and he turned out another big time performance with 336 yards, 3 TD's, and most important- NO INT'S. Tate's dropped balls, and a few route running mistakes on the wideouts were the only black marks on a passing game that is becoming damn near elite. Jimmy threw one very bad pass, and that was a dropped INT by a Michigan safety. Not only was Jimmy passing the ball like the elite QB that he is, but he was really leading this team on the field and on the sideline. Jimmy did not make the "Tebow Speech" to the media afterwords, but he did gather the team after Weis spoke and said this would not happen again. It is sickening. I had my concerns after the Nevada game, but I allowed myself to think that maybe the defense was just keying on something else more dangerous. Now that I have seen 2 games in a row where the opposition averaged over 5 yards per carry- I'm a shaking bitch. Next up is a Michigan State team that always runs well, and remember Jake Locker, and- oh yeah... U$C. I'm not going to sell out this defense just yet, considering they still pitched a shutout in the first game, but it is obvious that something is wrong. We all know that Tenuta is a blitz-happy psychopath that dreams of quarterbacks being gutted alive- but he is working with a limp. That limp is the defensive line. I'm not seeing any real production from these guys. That leads to a 6 man rush instead of the "Tenuta 5." That leads to defensive backs being out of position and wore down from man coverage. That leads to linebackers running past ball carriers. The defensive line has not done the job. Plain and simple. It is a line littered with talent- but young talent. This is not an excuse, as ND has a few upper-classmen in the main rotation, but it is just fact. And that sucks. The nitty gritty is more grit than nit. With this post being published late on Monday, I will dispense with the bullshit that most of you already have read or heard. I do want to leave you with a few last thoughts about this game though. Give up? Try never- or at least not in the modern era (I didn't look back into the early 1900's). </li><li>Michigan is a good team. They sucked balls last year, but they may make a legitimate run at the Big Ten conference, and they basically stole a victory from us in their house.</li><li>We got "Bobby-Browned" After watching Michigan players cheap shot ND all day, ND got flagged for "shhhing" the crowd. Fuck Michigan.</li><li>This offense NEEDS Michael Floyd. Remember last year after the Navy game? Yep. It sucked. that's what it felt like when i saw Shaq Evans, a true freshman, run that route that should of been a first down and victory. If Floyd is out there- Irish win. Plain and simple. In a game where the other superstar WR struggled (Tate) Floyd made the big catches- until his patella was on national TV.</li><li>Speaking of Tate. He has made enough amazing catches for you- the fat, slow fan, to shut the fuck up. Tough game. He'll be fine.</li><li>Armando Allen may be our only running back. It's fucking sick and amazing to try and comprehend that fact- but it's true. </li></ul>That's it. I'm done talking about this game. The rest of the season is still ahead. Michigan. Stupid, stupid, skunkbears. Riding high off of a 3-9 season, a billion transfers, a "scandal" in the making, and a huge- HUGE win against Western Michigan, has Skunkbear Nation believing in themselves again and worshipping a couple of freshman quarterbacks. Make no mistake about it... the skunkbears have a few weapons at their disposal, but Sam McGuffie is now in Houston selling crack and hanging out with Bushwick Bill. You remember McGuffie from last year. He was the only Michigan player that truly showed up. Have faith in the Tenuta schemed defense. There are many, many ways to stop the spread, and even more when the biggest threat is the quarterback himself. Tenuta is a master game-planner and has seen this offense on more than a few occasions- Maybe Michigan does need to use 3 quarterbacks?... What should you be drinking? The Bloody Ann Arbor (or you may also know it as The Bloody Mary). This fine cocktail is used by The Subway Domer to battle hangovers and to make breakfast a little more delightful with family and mooching friends. There are many, many ways to make this drink of whores, but here is my best advice to you... go <a href="http://www.dailyscocktails.com/cocktail_mixers/bloody_mary/original_bm/original_bm.html">buy som</a><a href="http://www.dailyscocktails.com/cocktail_mixers/bloody_mary/original_bm/original_bm.html">e Daily's Bloody Mary Mix </a>and: <ul><li>Fill bar glass with ice.</li><li>Fill glass a little less than 3/4 full with mixer.</li><li>Fill rest of glass (1 to 1.5 shots) with Grey Goose Vodka.</li><li>Drop in a celery stick</li><li>Put some big ass green olives on a stick and drop in.</li><li>Devour.</li></ul>Of course, some of you may want to say you "handmade" your own Bloody Ann Arbors. I have heard two different rumors about what defensive strategy Michigan may use on Saturday. Both of which, leave Kyle Rudolph in position to run motherfucking wild all day. One of those defenses would be a press cover 2, which would open up the middle of the field and put Michigan linebacker / Irish bitch Stevie Brown matching up against Rudolph. Rudolph is completely legit. His combination of size and speed is uncommon, but he also runs really good pass routes. If it weren't for Michael Floyd galloping all over Notre Dame Stadium last Saturday, Rudolph would have put up bigger numbers than his 4 receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown. I expect BIG things from Rudolph as he tries to cement his status as one of the nations premier tight ends. Watch him closely, because I don't think Michigan will be able to handle him as Floyd and Tate take coverage downfield. Defensive MVP: Brian Smith. Not only should he be making the big play here and there, to be truly great he must make good plays on a consistent basis. After what looked to be a prelude to a big game against Nevada in the first half, Brian was pretty quiet the rest of the game. At any rate, Brian was playing a key role against a spread team in his newly gained WILL position. Smith is most effective when he is more of a wildcard, and blitzing from the outside in, as opposed to the inside out. How effective he and Toryan Smith (Mike) are against the run will determine if Brian stays outside, or if he moves back in with Te'o taking over the WILL role. Smith is primed for a big game, and even if he doesn't register 10 tackles with 2 sacks- I would put a lot of money on the table that he creates one HUGE turnover early. The Sleeper: Robert Hughes. Not only does Notre Dame need to hang on to the football, but they also will need to hang on to drives. 3rd and 1, 3rd and an inch- you get the point. Irish fans may finally get what they have been asking for, for the past 3 years. An Allen and Hughes backfield. Something else to watch: Sam Young and his matchup against Brandon Graham. The Fighting Irish must keep Jimmy Clausen upright to attack this defense that is talented- but young and slightly injured. Young takes a backseat in leadership to Eric Olsen along the front five, but he can lead by example with inspired play. Last week, Sam looked like a new player as he played with fire and emotion- against Nevada. He will have to have that same type of mentality for 60 minutes, for what some may consider a bigger rival in Michigan. Watch Sam as closely as you would watch a skunkbear on the hunt. I expect big things from him and I am positive that he will deliver. So who's gonna win? IRISH 34-20. The offense will continue to roll for the 3rd game in a row despite playing a better defense. I don't expect them to jump out to a big lead as in last years contest, but I do expect them to pull away in the second half. This is the 3rd different score prediction from me- so take it as a sign.
