The lovely smell of lavender, staying at their bed and breakfast, drinking fine wine, what more could a person want?<br></p> <h3>The Lee Hahn Horticulture Garden</h3> <p>Named after Marshall Hahn, the president of Virginia Tech during the 1980s, the Lee Hahn Horticulture Garden is on the Virginia Tech campus and is open to public and free to visit. It is a beautiful place and one of the largest gardens in the state of Virginia. It has plenty of rare species, or rather, endemic to other areas of the world like Japan. The garden was built by students, from scratch, including the plant seeding, growth and care.<br></p> <h3>The Lyric Theatre</h3> <p>It used to be a theatre in the 1930s which was used for movie projections. It has since been renovated and is used as a non-profit theatre to showcase indie movies, first projections, host concerts, plays and everything art related. It is used with the intention of helping people reconnect with the arts. Not every team is equal and some have had either better luck, better players and coaching staff, or had simply had more women interested in sports at hand. Football, or soccer, is one of those sports which attracts both athletes and fans. The football team had plenty of appearances at the NCAA tournaments, their most successful one being in 2013, when they reached the semi-finals. The team had to face the opponents without Buzz Williams, Justin Robinson, Kerry Blackshear Jr., and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. AS a result, there were many new faces on the court and the audience did not know what to expect. Wabissa Bede and P.J. Horne lived up to the expectations and however, it is actually the new guys that truly shined in the opening. </p> <h2>Nolley shines in the early matchups </h2> <p>Despite the prognosis of ACC media that Hokies will probably end up at the bottom the team pulled through and treated everyone with an early win. Nolley definitely stepped up during his debut, as he confidently scored 30 points for VT and four of those scores were three-pointers. Nahiem Alleyne was the runner up in score game for VT as he scored 11 points along with 3 rebounds, which may indicate that he will not spend as much time on the bench in the future. Nolley got to spend a well deserved time in the spotlight, as he led the Hokies to a triumphant victory in South Carolina, which is always an ideal way to start the season. </p> <h2>Awesome Home Opener</h2> <div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="alignright is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="http://54.184.99.120/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Virginia-Tech-basketball.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-207" width="264" height="394"/></figure></div> <p>As everyone was excited to see how VT is going to fair against Coppin State, Cassell Coliseum was sold out, and once again all eyes were on Nolley. This time however he had some trouble finding his shot during the first half but performed spectacularly during the second half with 11 points and even 7 rebounds. Nahiem Alleyne, on the other hand, rose to the occasion and scored 18 points. <br></p> <p>The overall performance of Hokies is what kept the crowd cheering as they started with a strong early advantage of 25 – 3. Also, 6 new players got at least 10 minutes of action on the court, during which Cattoor and Tyrece Radford displayed their skill with 8 rebounds each. Radford also scored 10 points which help the Hokies solidify their victory at Cassell Coliseum. </p> <h2>Bright future ahead</h2> <p>It would appear that starting five is more than capable of holding their ground. With Nolley, Alleyne, Bede, Horne, and Wilkins at the helm and with a talented team of freshmen behind them, VT is likely to continue exceeding our expectations. Cattoor and Radford proved to be truly valuable assets to the team and eager to contribute right from the get-go. <br></p> <p>These early victories really invigorated the fanbase and the support Hokies are going to get will go through the roof most likely. With a positive crowd cheering them on the team is ready to dominate the field and the opponents will have to take the future matchups even more seriously. Fans roared passionately as they always do, as VT Hokies decimated Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Lane Stadium. After an honorary celebration, a coin was tossed, and as Wake Forest won the toss they opted to defer to the second half. Hokies had an amazing opening, probably the best one out the entire season, which probably shook the opposing team to the core. The defense was strong as always so Demon Deacons could not hold the ball for long and there were a lot of 3-and-outs. As WF could not reach the end zone they had to settle for a field goal resulting in 3-0 early advantage.</p> <h2>Second Quarter </h2> <p>During the second quarter, WF put up a better fight so it was not a great follow up to a positive start. Hokies found their way to Deacons’ red zone but were unable to score so they settled for a field goal to retake the lead. The offensive plays with Jamie Newman at the helm displayed truly aggressive plays and marched 75 yards, until Sage Surratt grabbed 11-yard Touch Down which put Deacons in the lead for the first time. The second quarter ended with 10-6 in favor of WF, and Hokies needed to figure out how to recuperate in the quarters to come. </p> <h2>Third Quarter</h2> <div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="alignleft is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="http://54.184.99.120/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/8631670_orig-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-197" width="401" height="267" srcset="https://www.vthokiefans.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/8631670_orig-1.jpg 640w, https://www.vthokiefans.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/8631670_orig-1-300x201.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px" /></figure></div> <p>With a strong defense, Hokies managed to keep Deacons at bay and after amazing two-yard run scores of Deshawn, VT was in control once again. Decons were determined to swing the game in their favor once again but Tre Turner found the gap in their defenses and with an incredible sweep managed a 57-yard run. Deshawn once again reached the end zone and solidified the lead for VT. The third quarter ended with 23-17 in favor of the Hokies. </p> <h2>Fourth Quarter </h2> <p>Entering the final quarter with the lead Hokies were fired up and their offensive plays were brutal. There was a standing ovation for Damon Hazelton 19-yard catch which put VT on the one-yard line which led to a score by Mitchell and brought the result to 29-17. The defense once again holds its ground and Deacons only manage to get to a fourth down. Hokies than took control of the game once again on Deacon’s seven-yard line. Let’s see what info <strong>the Hokies</strong> shared with the world this year.</p> <h2><strong>The Defense Steps Up</strong></h2> <p>With the defense in the previous season being less than stellar, the team expects to up their game a few notches. It would also be a great way to send off <strong>Bud Foster</strong>. The defensive coordinator announced that he would be retiring and this news somewhat dominated Media Day for a while. The announcement wasn’t a part of a ploy to motivate the players, but to keep them in the loop regarding the direction the team is heading. He has proven himself as a player and his progress over time became the main reason he is favored for the role. He is, reportedly, much more focused and involved with the team and his other responsibilities, so it is natural to expect great things from him in the following season.</p> <p>This is great for the team, especially given the criticism Willis received from the rest of the team, including the coach <strong>Justin Fuente</strong> at the beginning of the year. While he did make a few bad calls in the games, the team stuck with him and it would appear he finally managed to get his head into the game. To Willis’ credit, he never blamed his mistakes on others, officially or otherwise. As a result, the team members have become closer to one another. The players that left, talented though they are, did not have the optimism and the team spirit necessary to win. The Hokies hope that those that remained will prove that this kind of spirit will enable the team to reach new heights.</p> <h2><strong>Overall Impressions</strong></h2> <p>Media Day went without a hitch and a large number of inspirational speeches took place. The Hokies seem confident and focused on turning the season into their favor. Let us just hope that it would be enough for what lies ahead. This has not happened since 2013. Why are our beloved Hokies going to miss this one out and are they the only ones? We also take a look at some of the favorites to win the challenge this year. Bear in mind that our predictions are just predictions and that they should not be taken as a guarantee to place bets on the teams we deem as favorites. It is a sort of clash between <strong>the ACC</strong> and the <strong>B1G</strong>, or the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big 10 Conference. Besides these organizations, <strong>ESPN </strong>has been a major factor in creating this series. The format predicts 14 games and if there is a tie, the winner from the last championship retains <strong>the Commissioner’s</strong> Cup. The noble thing about the team is that they volunteered to skip this tournament.</p> <p>The reasons listed by the spokesperson of the team included problems with being invited to <strong>Maui Invitational</strong>. There is simply no way for the team to finish the tournament, which will be held from November 25-27, and be ready on December 2, given the traveling time and rest. The last time Virginia Tech didn’t participate in the Challenge was in 2013 when the team struggled to get away from the last place in the season. Similarly to then, ACC had more teams than B1G.</p> <h2><strong>Favorites</strong></h2> <p>The first matches will occur on December 2nd, 2019, with <strong>the Clemson Tigers</strong> taking on <strong>the Minnesota Golden Gophers</strong>. On the same day, <strong>the Miami Hurricanes</strong> will battle against <strong>the Illinois Fighting Illini</strong>. The big treat, however, comes the following day, when <strong>the Duke Blue Devils</strong> will play against <strong>the Michigan State Spartans</strong>. It is worth pointing out that the Devils are, by far, currently the most successful NCAA team with staggering 18 wins trumping everyone else in both Conferences.</p> <p>The strongest team B1G has to offer is <strong>the Purdue Boilermakers</strong> with 10 wins and 8 losses, though <strong>the Nebraska Cornhuskers</strong> have a higher winning percentage with 5 wins and 3 losses. To honor their choices and their heroes, we have compiled a humble list of some of the greatest football players <strong>the Hokies</strong> have had on over the years. They may not have a huge number of famous chess players or <a href="http://www.slowosportowe.pl/artykul/3439.html"><strong>Formula 1</strong></a> drivers, but football is their field. If you do not see your favorite player here, don’t fret. If we had enough time and space, we would have written extensive biographies for each one of these warriors. He caught a lucky break by replacing the injured <strong>Grant Noel</strong>, allowing him to score 12 touchdowns with his throws and three with rushes. More importantly and more impressively, it was his success in the senior year that allowed the Hokies to play in <strong>their first Sugar Bowl</strong>. He is still the stuff of legends, as he set a passing record in Virginia Tech at 6,508 yards. However, we still have a long way to go before we cover the best players that came from Virginia Tech.</p> <h2><strong>Tyrod Taylor</strong></h2> <p>Here is a quarterback that broke several records, including the one set by Randall. Taylor passed the ball over the whopping 6,795 yards and even led the team into <strong>two ACC Championships</strong>. It isn’t his exploits while he was one of the Hokies that put him on this list. It is his 477 passes and 61 touchdowns in 1995, as well as the win against <strong>the Patriots</strong> in the Super Bowl. His quality as a player is best demonstrated by his appearance in the Packers Hall of Fame.</p> <h2><strong>Michael Vick</strong></h2> <p><strong>Michael Vick</strong> is regarded by some as one of the best players of Virginia Tech, period. The quarterback has broken several records with his passing of the ball, one of which was in 1999 for the most passes as a freshman in the NCAA. After graduating, he was drafted first by <strong>the Falcons</strong>, though he played <strong>for the Eagles</strong>, <strong>the Jets</strong>, and <strong>the Steelers</strong> later. He retired in 2016, though he coached and consulted a few times in the following years.</p> <h2><strong>Bruce Smith</strong></h2> <p>This is the only player whose success trumps even that of Vick. Not only is he the best players the Hokies ever had on their team, but he is also considered <strong>one of the top players in NFL history</strong>. After entering the Virginia Tech Hall of Fame, he was drafted by <strong>the Buffalo Bills</strong> in 1985. As a skilled defensive player, he is most known for his sacks. He was named <strong>the Defensive Player of the Year</strong> for several years by <strong>Associated Press</strong>, <strong>NEA</strong>, and <strong>the United Press International</strong>.
