Nigerian pastors and […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><br>For Immediate Release </p> <p>June 3, 2021 </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><em>Committee to Free Nigerian Slaves Calls for an End to Modern-Day Bondage</em></h2> <p><strong>WASHINGTON, D.C.</strong> — On Saturday, June 5, at 10 A.M., the Committee to Free Nigerian Slaves (CFNS) will protest jihadists’ enslavement of Nigerians at the corner of 72nd and Dodge Street in Omaha, Nebraska. Nigerian pastors and leaders will speak about the mass murder and enslavement of Nigerians in what has been a cruel religious war.</p> <p>The CFNS is a coalition of Nigerian and Nigerian American human rights activists and their respective groups, including the International Committee on Nigeria, the Leah Foundation, Mission Africa International, Save the Persecuted Christians and many others.</p> <p>The purpose of the rally is to gain the attention of Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, who is a member of the U.S. Senate’s Select Committee on Intelligence and has spoken out against religious persecution in the past. He is in a position to take our information and use it to force the U.S. to put pressure on the Nigerian government to forcibly free the slaves. And, to also invite the support of Nebraska Representative Jeff Fortenberry, who has previously advocated for Sudanese victims of enslavement.</p> <p>Since 2001, Boko Haram terrorists, Fulani militants, and other extremist groups tied to the Islamic State and al-Qaeda, have raided Nigerian villages, killed tens of thousands, and enslaved an untold number of women and children.</p> <p>CFSN member Stephen Enada, president of the International Committee on Nigeria (ICON), said today, <strong><em>“</em></strong><strong><em>In Nigeria, jihad terrorists are storming our villages and murdering our people. So far this year over 1,500 Nigerians, who are mostly Christians, have been murdered by these jihadists and over 2,000 people have been abducted or kidnapped. </em></strong><strong><em>The situation is dire. We can no longer sit in silence as our brothers and sisters in Nigeria are being captured and enslaved.”</em></strong></p> <p>According to the CFNS, in 2021 alone, hundreds of schoolchildren in Nigeria have been kidnapped. Parents fear sending their children to school. School-aged children are terrorized. Most of the individuals captured by Boko Haram jihadists are young women and girls taken by force and trafficked as slave concubines. They endure horrendous abuse and mistreatment. Christian girls like Leah are pressed by the terrorists to convert to a faith not her own.”</em></strong></p> <p>“I’m confident that if we bring these facts to more people, more people will get angry and start making a difference,” said Samuel Akough, a local Nigerian American activist from Omaha.</p> <p>Nigeria is ranked third in the 2020 Global Terrorism Index (GTI) of countries most impacted by terrorism. Since 2014, Fulani militants — a small, extremist portion of the Fulani people — have accelerated the conflict with Nigerian Christians at an alarming rate. Fulani militants are reportedly responsible for 7,400 deaths since 2015, targeting and attacking whole communities, schools, and households. Within a month, five […]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Save the Persecuted Christians | February 17, 2021</p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><em>Human Rights Activists Call on Nigeria to Secure Christian Teen’s Release from Boko Haram</em></h2> <p><strong>WASHINGTON, D.C. — </strong>Feb. 19, 2021 marks three years since Boko Haram terrorists surrounded a boarding school in Dapchi, northern Nigeria, and dragged off 109 young girls and one boy. Within a month, five girls had perished, but the rest – save Leah Sharibu – were returned after the Nigerian government negotiated with the kidnappers. How many of us, when confronted by killers, would do as she has done?”</em></strong></p> <p>At first, there was only silence. The terrorists took Sharibu off into the depths of the Sambisa Forest and the ungoverned territories surrounding Lake Chad. About six months later, in August 2018, a video of the girl was released. She was seated on a matt dressed head to foot in a light-yellow Muslim hijab. She could be heard pleading for her life. Boko Haram insisted the government meet their demands, or Sharibu would be killed. Their demands were not made public.</p> <p>Nigerian government officials with media in tow flew in to Dapchi on helicopters to visit the girl’s parents and promised they would do everything they could to bring Sharibu home<strong><em>. </em></strong></p> <p><strong><em>“But it was only a show for the media”, said Dr. Gloria Puldu, the director for the Leah Foundation, during a 2019 visit to Washington, D.C. sponsored by Save the Persecuted Christians and STPC’s coalition partner, the International Committee on Nigeria.</em></strong> Rebecca Sharibu, the girl’s mother, who had come to D.C. to advocate more be done for her daughter, tearfully agreed.</p> <p>In mid-September, 2018, Boko Haram sent video of the assassination of another captive, a Muslim Red Cross nurse, who Boko Haram deemed an apostate for working with a western aid organization. Again, they threatened Sharibu’s life. Then, in mid-October, Boko Haram sent word about the girl along with video of yet another execution of a female aid worker. Boko Haram announced it was their right, according to their strict adherence to Sharia, to keep Sharibu, an ‘infidel’, as “a slave for life.”</p> <p>While visiting Washington, D.C. in June 2019, Dr. Puldu and Rebecca Sharibu met with representatives from Congress, USCIRF, USAID, the U.S. State Department and the National Security Council. They also spoke with Vice President Mike Pence’s office, who then summoned the Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to the White House to pressure the Nigerian government to do more for Leah.</p> <p><strong><em>“She did an amazing thing by refusing to renounce Christ, and I’m very proud of what she has done,” Rebecca Sharibu said at the time. “I’m not sure if I was even in her position at 14 years old that I would have even done what she has done.”</em></strong></p> <p>More than a year went by with no word when finally, in 2020, news leaked that Sharibu had been married to a top Boko Haram commander and that she had given birth to a son. </p> <p><strong><em>“It is impossible to know what Leah Sharibu’s life is like now,” said Laugesen. “Her family simply wants her back. The Nigerian government has shown it can successfully negotiate with these terrorists, at least for the release of Muslim captives, like the more than 300 Kankara boys taken and released this last December. By all appearances, the Nigerian government has given up on Leah. But the world will not forget this fearless Christian teen, nor give up praying for her and demanding her release. UNICEF reports more than 13 million children in northern Nigeria are not in school—the highest in the world. Not until the release of this investigation did the Malaysian authorities form the Special Task Force (STP) to investigate the enforced disappearance of Pastor Raymond Koh. Considerations for trade and regional geopolitical tensions serve to muddy the waters on holding India accountable for appalling religious freedom violations.”</em></strong></p> <p>According to Pompeo’s statement, the United States is also placing the Comoros, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Russia on a Special Watch List for governments that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom.”</p> <p> Additionally, we are designating al-Shabaab, al-Qa’ida, Boko Haram, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Houthis, ISIS, ISIS-Greater Sahara, ISIS-West Africa, Jamaat Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin, and the Taliban as Entities of Particular Concern under the Frank R. Wolf International Religious Freedom Act of 2016. Said Pompeo, “We have not renewed the prior Entity of Particular Concern designations for al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula and ISIS-Khorasan, due to the total loss of territory formerly controlled by these terrorist organizations. While these two groups no longer meet the statutory criteria for designation, we will not rest until we have fully eliminated the threat of religious freedom abuses by any violent extremist and terrorist groups.”</p> <p><a>Added </a><strong><em>Laugesen, “Obviously, more must be done to curb the spread of Sharia-supremacist ideology through force and terror. Attendees will learn about the facts and coordinated work to battle back the pervading ignorance on this grave crisis threatening to destabilize Africa’s most populous nation. In Pakistan, the penalty for blasphemy is death. Human rights and religious freedom advocates warn blasphemy laws in Pakistan are used to persecute and intimidate minority believers. Meanwhile, this summer, China brazenly reneged on its treaty with Britain, which guaranteed that Hong Kong would be secure under its own separate system of laws and freedoms. People of faith in Hong Kong are now also imperiled by the atheistic regime. </p> <p><strong><em>Save the Persecuted Christians</em></strong> is working to raise awareness about the plight of over 300 million Christians facing extreme violence and injustice in countries around the world.
