36.

ANAHEIM –Coach Bruce Boudreau welcomed his Ducks back to practice Thursday after two days off with 75 minutes of nearly nonstop skating.

 37.
“When you have practice like that, you would rather not have days off,” right wing Teemu Selanne, 42, said, smiling.

 38.
Asked if he felt his age for a change, Selanne said: “I felt like I was 50.”

 39.
Looking at five games in seven days starting Sunday, and with very few days off in March, Boudreau said: “I’m glad we had these five days off when we got them, but I don’t like what’s coming up. It’s the calm before the storm.

 40.
“It is what it is, and every team is going to do it. It’s not going to be easy for any team.”

 41.
Thursday’s mini-training camp wasn’t easy, but Selanne’s kidding aside, it was both expected and welcomed.

 42.
“I feel great,” captain and center Ryan Getzlaf, 27. “I thought practice went great, we came back with great energy.”

 43.
There was lots of skating, shooting, and passing, but no real team work or strategy. The few breaks served to simply lay out the next drill.

 44.
“It was a hard skate, a conditioning drill after two days off, up and back,” Boudreau said, adding he considered just one off-day before deciding upon two during the rare break. “Five days of practice would be would be a lot rougher on them than playing a game. Some of our guys aren’t 21 years old.”

 84.

CHICAGO — Is there any way to talk Teemu Selanne into playing another NHL season? Like now.

 85.
At some point, Selanne has to show his 42 years of age on the ice. Right? Except this truly great No. 8 keeps proving that he has a lot of high quality hockey left in him.

 86.
Four players at his age have scored four points in an NHL game. Selanne has done it twice in a 22-day span.

 87.
Selanne was the best player on the ice Saturday night in the Ducks’ 6-5 shootout win over St. Louis. The Hockey Hall of Fame-bound winger scored his 667th goal but he has been more impressive as a playmaker in this young season.

 88.
His three assists against the Blues was highlighted by a setup from the corner to a cutting Bobby Ryan toward the net for one of his two goals and his burst past former teammate Andy McDonald to help Ryan feed Saku Koivu for a one-timer.

 89.
Selanne’s four points give him 1,620 for his career, pulling him into a 16th place tie with Adam Oates. Gordie Howe, at 42 years and 326 days, is the oldest to score four points in a game as Selanne was 42 and 222 days. Tim Horton (42 years, three days) is the only other player to also accomplish that feat at that age.

 90.
But maybe it is only time before Selanne passes Howe for that particular mark. His team-leading 14 points is his most through the first 11 games since 1995-96 when he was 25 and playing for the original Winnipeg Jets.

 91.
Following the game Saturday, Selanne was asked if he prefers a 6-5 win or a 1-0 win.

 92.
“Oh, this, ” he said, smiling. “Like old Winnipeg times. That’s hockey.”

 93.

 115.

ST. LOUIS — Rickard Rakell hasn’t played in the last six Ducks games and with that comes the wonder if the 19-year-old forward is better served remaining with them or playing with his junior team.

 116.
Rakell has only appeared in four games as Brad Staubitz has been favored by Coach Bruce Boudreau on the fourth line. The Ducks can play Rakell in one more game without burning the first year of his entry-level contract or they can keep him beyond if they so wish.

 117.
The Ducks can return him to the Ontario Hockey League’s Plymouth Whalers, where he has stood out the last two-plus seasons. To this point, they have yet to choose of any of those options.

 118.
Boudreau said it is General Manager Bob Murray‘s call on whether Rakell stays or goes but he shared one theory on why he remains with them.

 119.
“I understand that we need the development,” Boudreau said earlier this week. “But sometimes practicing with NHL players could be just as good as playing with junior players or a 16-year-old. Having to check Corey Perry in practice is a little different.”

Hiller is considered day-to-day.

 145.
Deslauriers, 28, appeared in four games with the Ducks last season and went 3-1 with a 2.74 goals-against average. He has played in two games at Norfolk and is coming off a 31-save effort for the Admirals on Friday in a 4-1 win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

 146.
Vatanen, 21, played his first three NHL games and had a plus-1 rating while averaging more than 15 minutes of ice time. A ragged last two games and the club’s acquisition of the more experienced Ben Lovejoy on Wednesday pinched the youngster out of the rotation for now.

 147.
Hendry, 28, played in two games as he filled in for a flu-ridden Cam Fowler on opening night in Vancouver and an ill Toni Lydman on Wednesday in Colorado. He averaged 17 1/2 minutes over the two contests.

 206.

DALLAS — Ben Lovejoy‘s world changed in a matter of minutes Wednesday night.

 207.
All Lovejoy had known at the NHL level was the Pittsburgh Penguins, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in the summer of 2008 after the defenseman toiled in the American Hockey League following three years of college at Dartmouth.

 208.
His phone rang and it was Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero on the other end. Cue the impending doom sound effects.

 209.
“I found out right before the [Ducks'] game,” Lovejoy said, recalling the moment when he was dealt to Anaheim. “[Shero] gave my number to [Ducks GM] Bob Murray, who called me right after. We chatted for about three minutes and then he said, ‘OK, I’ve got to go watch the game.’

 210.
“That was our conversation. Then I packed up, picked up my hockey bag and headed to the airport.”

 211.
Lovejoy was then on a 7 a.m. flight out of Pittsburgh to Dallas where he joined up with the Ducks for their practice Thursday at American Airlines Center. There wasn’t much sleep in between but “I got some adrenaline and I’m really excited.”

 212.
Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau didn’t waste any time having Lovejoy get comfortable. Lovejoy was in the lineup for Friday night’s 3-1 loss to the Stars, logging 16 minutes, 20 seconds and recording a team-high four shots on goal.

 213.
“He’s a good skater,” Boudreau said. “He moves the puck well. … There’s no sense waiting. Let’s get him in. He hasn’t played in a little bit now. It’s about time he started to play.”

 214.
Lovejoy had been scratched in recent games with the Penguins and found himself squeezed out of the mix on their blue line.

 215.
“I think it was a bunch of factors,” he said. “I think that it was a coupel of years of first-round outs in the playoffs. They wanted to shake things up. What had not worked in the past, they wanted to change. I was a bit of a casulalty of that. I was a casualty of some talented rookie prospects coming up.

 216.
“I think that it was just better for both me and the organization to go separate ways. I have nothing but good things to say about Pittsburgh.”

 217.
To that point, Lovejoy said that co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle said him well wishes via text messages as did many of his former teammates. Boudreau and assistant coach Bob Woods know his game, having seen him plenty of times while with Washington.

 218.
“I thnk they want me to be aggressive,” Lovejoy said. ”I have played an awful lot against Woods’s teams. Probably 60 games. So they know what kind of player I am. Played a bunch against Washington when Bruce was there. I’m at my best when I’m being aggressive and when I’m skating. That’s what they want me to do.”

 219.
Said Boudreau: “If you don’t have enough depth, it’s hard to stay successful. You get three guys with a two-week injury, that’s a big chunk of your season.”

 220.
The most notable image of Lovejoy’s time with Pittsburgh was his massively swollen left cheek that was featured on HBO’s “24/7″ after he was struck by a shot in a Dec. 22, 2010 game against Florida. Ironically, Lovejoy scored his first NHL goal that night.

 221.
Now the New Hampshire native is focused on learning a system that he often played against.

 222.
“I know how difficult it is to play against,” he said. “And I will do my best to pick it up as quickly as possible. I’m sure there’ll be a learning curve. Hopefully my positives will outweigh the negatives of me not knowing the system perfectly yet.

 223.
“I will get there very quickly, I’m quite sure.”

 224.

 284.

DENVER — Maybe there will come a time when NHL teams start to figure him out and maybe Viktor Fasth will not be the brick wall that he has become since joining the Ducks.

 285.
But Fasth will gladly take the success that has come with his first four starts in the league since the Ducks signed him out of Sweden last May. The early numbers are staggering — a 4-0 record, 0.98 goals-against average and .962 save percentage.

 286.
His latest effort was his best, a 31-save performance against the Colorado Avalanche for his first shutout on this continent. As he has come to do, Fasth deflected away any praise like a slap shot from the blue line.

 287.
“It’s nothing you go and think about,” Fasth said, talking about the shutout. “You just try to do your best and try to help the team out as much as you can. I’m really glad I have it. It’s a little bonus. Most important thing is that we got the win and started off this road trip really good.”

 288.
Fasth is no rookie even if this is his first NHL experience. The 30-year-old starred in the Elitserien — or commonly known stateside as the Swedish Elite League — and was the goaltender of the year the last two seasons.

 289.
It is clear that there is now a goaltending battle in Anaheim as Fasth pushes for more playing time while incumbent starter Jonas Hiller tries to sharpen his game. Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau is backing Hiller but also doesn’t mind how this current scenario is playing out.

 290.
Asked about Fasth pushing Hiller, Boudreau said, “It doesn’t hurt. He keeps going like that … and Hilly knows. He’s the first one congratulating him off the ice. They’re a good team together. Hilly, he’ll be playing soon and he’ll be doing the same thing.”

 291.
Meanwhile, the Ducks continue to get a major contributions from the veteran defensive pairing of Sheldon Souray and Francois Beauchemin. Both contributed goals against the Avalanche on Wednesday night and each was also a plus-2 on the night.

 292.
“Thank God they’re doing that,” Boudreau said. “They look like they’ve hit it off really well. We’ve given them big minutes and they’ve come through and played big games for us.

 293.
“They’re both very calm back there. I don’t think they get rattled. They’ve got a lot of experience between the two of them and it’s showing.”

 294.
Beauchemin is playing his best hockey since the days when he was paired with Scott Niedermayer. Souray has goals in three straight games and four overall while compiling a plus-7 rating. The two are a combined plus-13.

 295.
Souray, 36, started strong in Dallas last season before tailing off offensively. But he feels that the cast of offensive players around him will help sustain his early success.

 296.
“I’ve been getting some opportunities,” Souray said. “I’ve been playing in some situations to provide a little offense. Power plays obviously has provided me with a little opportunity.

 297.
“Playing with these guys … you’re going to get offense if you play good defense. Or the way we play our transition [game] and stuff, if you play good defense, we’r egoing ot get those chances.”

 298.
Boudreau wasn’t thrilled with the overall team play, saying afterward that the Ducks allowed many more good scoring chances than they had in the previous several games combined. Against the Avalanche, it was clear who carried the load.

 299.
“Vik played unbelievable for us,” Beauchemin said. “If it wasn’t for him, there’s no way we would have won that game. He kept us in it and make save after save.

 300.
“Not easy ones. Big, key saves at key times. We were able to get a couple of goals for him. That was huge.”

 301.

 324.

DENVER — Not content with the current rotation of defensemen in the organization, the Ducks added to their depth on the blue line on Wednesday by acquiring Ben Lovejoy from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2014 fifth-round draft pick.

 325.
Lovejoy, 28, played in just three games for the Penguins this season and had been a healthy scratch as of late. The former three-year player at Dartmouth has played in 98 games with Pittsburgh over four-plus NHL seasons, compiling four goals and 21 assists along with 63 penalty minutes.

 326.
“We’ve liked Ben for a number of years and are happy to have him,” Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. “With the schedule in the West this season, we think we may need 10 or 11 defensemen when it’s all said and done.”

 327.
Lovejoy is expected to meet up with the Ducks in Dallas on Thursday and be available for their game Friday against the Stars. Cam Fowler is currently on injured reserve with an upper-body injury and has already missed two games.

 328.
Fowler will also miss the upcoming games against Dallas and St. Louis but the Ducks are hoping that he will be able to join them next week for the remainder of their six-game road trip. He suffered an apparent head injury Saturday when he was drilled into the boards by Kings center Jarret Stoll.

 329.
Toni Lydman sat out his second game this season due to flu symptoms he incurred Wednesday morning. Jordan Hendry was recalled from Norfolk of the AHL and played in the Ducks’ 3-0 win over Colorado. Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said he expected Lydman to be available for Friday’s game.
